RESUMEN

We have developed a fully planar solar-pumped fiber laser using a solid-state luminescent solar collector (LSC). This laser does not use any focusing device, such as a lens or mirror; thus, it can lase without tracking the sun. Our developed device with an aperture of 30 cm emits 15 mW, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 0.023% and a collection efficiency of 0.21 W/m2. A 12-fold improvement over a previously developed liquid LSC is achieved by combining the total internal reflection of the solid-state LSC with dielectric multilayer mirrors. The observed laser power is in good agreement with that predicted via numerical simulation, demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposed method.

This study proposes an extended theoretical formula to characterize the relationship between the geometrical concentration ratio Cg and arbitrary incidence-angle range to objectively understand the theoretical limit performance of vehicle-integrated concentrator photovoltaics (VICPVs), i.e., static and low-concentration CPVs installed on a horizontal surface. Theoretical analysis revealed that the maximum annual optical efficiency (maximum annual solar energy yield) can be achieved by selectively collecting the sunlight incident only from a specific incidence-angle range of θ1-θ2 (θ1 ≠ 0°), regardless of the geographical location, which is associated with the angular distribution of the annual solar energy on the concentrator aperture. Moreover, the results of the solar concentrator design based on the obtained formula clarified that the annual optical efficiencies of the optical systems with aspheric lens or dielectric-filled crossed compound-parabolic-concentrator lens were 64-89% of the theoretical limit depending on the location for Cg = 3.5×. Nevertheless, the concentrator design can be further improved for practical applications.

We demonstrate an extremely low-concentrated solar-pumped laser (SPL) using a fiber laser with transverse excitation geometry. A low concentration factor is highly desired in SPLs to eliminate the need for precise solar tracking and to considerably increase the practical applications of SPL technology. In this Letter, we have exploited the intrinsic low-loss property of silica fibers to compensate for the extremely low gain coefficient of the weakly pumped active medium. A 40 m long Nd3+-doped fiber coil is packed in a ring-shaped chamber filled with a sensitizer solution. We demonstrated a lasing threshold that is 15 times the concentration of natural sunlight and two orders of magnitude smaller than those of conventional SPLs.

Nowadays, the extensively used lead sulfide (PbS) quantum dot (QD) hole transport layer (HTL) relies on layer-by-layer method to replace long chain oleic acid (OA) ligands with short 1,2-ethanedithiol (EDT) ligands for preparation. However, the inevitable significant volume shrinkage caused by this traditional method will result in undesired cracks and disordered QD arrangement in the film, along with adverse increased defect density and inhomogeneous energy landscape. To solve the problem, a novel method for EDT passivated PbS QD (PbS-EDT) HTL preparation using small-sized benzoic acid (BA) as intermediate ligands is proposed in this work. BA is substituted for OA ligands in solution followed by ligand exchange with EDT layer by layer. With the new method, smoother PbS-EDT films with more ordered and closer QD packing are gained. It is demonstrated stronger coupling between QDs and reduced defects in the QD HTL owing to the intermediate BA ligand exchange. As a result, the suppressed nonradiative recombination and enhanced carrier mobility are achieved, contributing to ≈20% growth in short circuit current density (Jsc) and a 23.4% higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.2%. This work provides a general framework for layer-by-layer QD film manufacturing optimization.

A deep understanding of the effect of the A-site cation cross-exchange on the hot-carrier relaxation dynamics in perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) has profound implications on the further development of disruptive photovoltaic technologies. In this study, the hot carrier cooling kinetics of pure FAPbI3 (FA+ , CH(NH2 )2 + ), MAPbI3 (MA+ , CH3 NH3 + + ), CsPbI3 (Cs+ , Cesium) and alloyed FA0.5 MA0.5 PbI3 , FA0.5 Cs0.5 PbI3 , and MA0.5 Cs0.5 PbI3 QDs are investigated using ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. The lifetimes of the initial fast cooling stage (<1 ps) of all the organic cation-containing PQDs are shorter than those of the CsPbI3 QDs, as verified by the electron-phonon coupling strength extracted from the temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra. The lifetimes of the slow cooling stage of the alloyed PQDs are longer under illumination greater than 1 sun, which is ascribed to the introduction of co-vibrational optical phonon modes in the alloyed PQDs. This facilitated efficient acoustic phonon upconversion and enhanced the hot-phonon bottleneck effect, as demonstrated by first-principles calculations.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire (NW) based lead sulfide (PbS) quantum dot solar cells (QDSCs), i.e., bulk heterojunction QDSCs, have been widely investigated because of the excellent photoelectronic properties of PbS QDs and ZnO NWs. To further improve the efficiency of this type of QDSCs, various passivation methods are applied to ZnO NWs to suppress interface recombination caused by trap defects. However, the comparison among passivation using organic, inorganic, and inorganic-organic hybrid materials with different properties has been less studied. In this work, the effect of passivation with inorganic Mg-doped ZnO (ZMO), organic 1,2-ethanedithiol (EDT) and both of them on ZnO NWs and PbS QDSCs are investigated. As a result, ZnO NWs purely passivated by organic material EDT show the best performance with fewer surface defects and better matched energy level with the PbS QD layer. A nearly 1.7 times larger power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.9% is achieved for the solar device using ZnO NW @EDT, compared with that (4.1%) of the untreated one. The work provides a promising way to impede interlayer charge recombination and facilitate carrier transport, thus enhancing the photovoltaic performance of the device.

Solution-processed colloidal quantum dot solar cells (CQDSCs) is a promising candidate for new generation solar cells. To obtain stable and high performance lead sulfide (PbS)-based CQDSCs, high carrier mobility and low non-radiative recombination center density in the PbS CQDs active layer are required. In order to effectively improve the carrier mobility in PbS CQDs layer of CQDSCs, butylamine (BTA)-modified graphene oxide (BTA@GO) is first utilized in PbS-PbX2 (X = I-, Br-) CQDs ink to deposit the active layer of CQDSCs through one-step spin-coating method. Such surface treatment of GO dramatically upholds the intrinsic superior hole transfer peculiarity of GO and attenuates the hydrophilicity of GO in order to allow for its good dispersibility in ink solvent. The introduction of BTA@GO in CQDs layer can build up a bulk nano-heterojunction architecture, which provides a smooth charge carrier transport channel in turn improves the carrier mobility and conductivity, extends the carriers lifetime and reduces the trap density of PbS-PbX2 CQDs film. Finally, the BTA@GO/PbS-PbX2 hybrid CQDs film-based relatively large-area (0.35 cm2) CQDSCs shows a champion power conversion efficiency of 11.7% which is increased by 23.1% compared with the control device.

We demonstrate a low-loss pigtail reflector for a fiber laser comprising off-the-shelf components. A pigtail configuration has the advantage of easy alteration of the reflection properties, which is highly desired for basic studies and metrological applications. Our proposed reflector consists of a dielectric-coated bulk mirror and an Ferrule connector (FC)-type fiber receptacle, which are fixed with a machined holder such that the FC-type connector at the fiber end can be attached onto the mirror surface with an appropriate amount of pressure, which is essential for minimal reflection loss. The measured reflection loss is 0.07 dB, which is one order of magnitude less than that of the typical connection loss, 0.52 dB, of an FC-FC interconnection; it is comparable to the typical splice loss of a single-mode fiber (0.05 dB). The benefit of the proposed method is its versatility that enables its application to various types of fiber lasers.

To confirm the usefulness of an immunohistochemical panel of antibodies for KIT (c-kit/CD117), CD34, desmin, smooth-muscle actin (SMA), h-caldesmon (HCD), S-100 protein, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and beta-catenin, 297 mesenchymal and peripheral nerve-sheath tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and intra-abdominal locations including 211 gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), 12 leiomyomas, 18 leiomyosarcomas, 17 solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs), 14 schwannomas, and 25 desmoid-type fibromatoses (DTFs) were analyzed immunohistochemically. Consistent (100%) immunoreactivity for KIT, CD34, desmin and S-100, and nuclear accumulation of beta-catenin were detected in GISTs, SFTs, smooth-muscle tumors, schwannomas, and DTFs, respectively. Immunoreactivity for SMA, HCD, and NSE was observed in a wide range of these tumors. In addition, 418 bone and soft tissue tumors were enrolled in this study for KIT immunostaining. As a result, a limited number of these tumors were KIT positive, including synovial sarcoma that showed morphological similarity to GISTs. These findings suggest that KIT, CD34, desmin, S-100, and beta-catenin are key markers for clinical diagnosis of GISTs and other spindle cell tumors that may involve the gastrointestinal tract, whereas SMA, HCD, and NSE have only limited value.

The authors achieved highly efficient degradation of polychlorinated aromatic compounds, including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, and dioxin-like compounds such as coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (co-PCBs), which are known as persistent organic pollutants. Degradation was accomplished in 24 h through a simple stirring operation using safe and high workability metallic calcium, which acts as both a scavenger and a reducing agent, and Rh/C catalyst in an alcohol solution under mild conditions in a sealed tube at 25 degrees C without a temperature increase within 0.15 MPa of increasing internal pressure during the reaction. In this system, reductive dechlorination by metallic calcium and catalytic reduction by Rh/C and generated hydrogen gas, without any external addition of hydrogen, exert a synergistic effect on the degradation of chlorinated compounds. Alcohol was used as a proton source and hydrogen, which was generated by a side reaction, causes an increase in the activity of Rh/C catalyst. Through the degradation of 4-chloroanisole in ethyl alcohol, anisole and cyclohexyl methyl ether were obtained in good conversions. Using ethyl alcohol as a solvent, treatment of dioxins and co-PCBs in a solution was markedly effective for degradation to reduce 2806 pg TEQ/ml of initial concentration to 31.8 pg TEQ/ml; its yield was 98.5%. Moreover, degradation in methyl alcohol took place in a 99.3% yield. That concentration ultimately reached 20.3 pg TEQ/ml under a mild wet process. All congeners of dioxins and co-PCBs were degraded in high conversions. In this degradation, lower aliphatic alcohol, such as methyl alcohol, is effective for making a new calcium surface as compared to alcohol with more methylene chains. In addition, it seemed that a higher pressure of hydrogen was easily generated in methyl alcohol, and then catalytic degradation was effectivley influenced.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the world's major malignancies, especially in Asian countries. To improve the prognosis of HCC, it is essential to predict its invasive behavior in both intra- and extra-hepatic modalities. For this purpose, we examined the predictive values of two tumor markers, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and des-gamma-carboxyprothrombin (DCP). METHODS: 194 HCC cases at the National Cancer Center Hospital were selected from the Pathology Records. Detailed information regarding the existence of extra-hepatic venous invasion (EHVI) at the portal vein and intra-hepatic multiple malignant tumors (IHMTs) were collected and combined with the preoperative AFP and DCP testing results. Furthermore, information about the viral infection status such as HBs antigen positive or HCV antibody positive or no viral hepatitis was obtained. The information was analyzed by the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve) method. RESULTS: and CONCLUSIONS: In both the EHVI group and the IHMT group, all the combinations except the HCV-positive group of IHMT revealed a tendency for DCP to offer better diagnostic accuracies, although this was statistically significant only in the HBs-positive group of IHMT. This result indicates either (1). that in a strict sense, DCP is not necessarily better than AFP at predicting the invasive characteristics or (2). that DCP is better than AFP at reflecting the invasive characteristics of HCC although not statistically significant. In either situation, from a long-term viewpoint, it is advisable to find a new marker or to re-evaluate the existing markers in order to predict the invasive characteristics more accurately.
