RESUMEN

Fifty-nine epidemiologically unrelated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates from different geographical areas and 23 phage-type 77 MRSA isolates from France were investigated. Cellular DNA, digested with restriction endonucleases EcoRI or HindIII, was probed with plasmids carrying the gene encoding 16S rRNA (pBA2), the gene aacA-aphD (pSF815A) and the gene aacA-aphD plus part of IS256 (pIP1307). When probed with pBA2, most of the unrelated isolates displayed the same hybridisation pattern. A greater diversity in patterns was detected in gentamicin-resistant strains with the two other probes. The most accurate fingerprinting of these isolates was obtained with the probe pIP1307. Moreover, this probe appeared to be useful for tracing the phage-type 77 epidemic MRSA isolates widespread in French hospitals.

RESUMEN

Detection of an unusual combination of four resistance markers among coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) isolated in the same intensive care unit led to the undertaking of an epidemiological assessment. Seventeen CNS isolates from the same unit and 38 epidemiologically unrelated Staphylococcus epidermidis isolates were typed by eight methods, including analysis of immunoblot patterns and hybridisation patterns (HP) obtained with three probes. The probes comprised plasmids carrying the genes encoding 16S rRNA (pBA2), aacA-aphD (pSF815A), and aacA-aphD with part of IS256 (pIP1307). Immunoblot patterns and HP with pIP1307 indicated that 14 of the 17 CNS isolates from the same unit resulted from the spread of an epidemic strain.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Sphingomonas paucimobilis bacteraemia is a rare infection typically related to nosocomial outbreaks. MATERIAL: A 33-year-old immunocompetent man requested evaluation in the Internal Medicine Department for fever without source. His physical examination was normal. Laboratory analysis showed mild hypertransaminasemia. In both blood culture sets grew Gram-negative bacilli, being identified as S. paucimobilis. The patient was treated with oral levofloxacin with full recovery. CONCLUSION: S. paucimobilis infections can occur in the community setting in a relatively non-immunocompromised patient. In a patient with bacteraemia, microbiological studies are crucial to ensure a successful outcome.

RESUMEN

The antimicrobial resistance patterns and plasmid profile analyses for 30 Shigella spp. isolated in Cordoba, Argentina, were determined. Most strains were resistant to multiple antibiotics, particularly traditional agents such as ampicillin, chloramphenicol and trimethoprim. All isolates harboured at least one plasmid (range 1-12), the plasmid profiles differing in every case. Nineteen strains transferred all or some of their resistance determinants by conjugation.

RESUMEN

The occurrence of Salmonella in endemic and subendemic species of lizard and frog of Gran Canaria, Gallotia stehlini and Rana perezi, as well as captive reptiles from other regions of the world was investigated. The occurrence of Salmonella was statistically higher in endemic and subendemic species than in captive animals (p < 0.001). Seventy strains of Salmonella were isolated. S. berta and S. gran canaria were the most frequently isolated serotypes. The study of Salmonella in gall-bladder contents showed a high parasitation (85%), being higher in Gallotia stehlini (100%) than in Rana perezi (60%). None of the isolated salmonellae were resistant to tested antibiotics.
