Objectives: Cognitive load refers to the working memory resources required during a task. When the load is too high or too low this has implications for an individual's task performance. In the context of paramedicine and emergency medical services (EMS) broadly, high cognitive load could potentially put patient and personnel safety at risk. This systematic review aimed to determine the current understanding of the role of cognitive load in paramedical contexts.Methods: To do this, five databases were searched (Elsevier Embase, ProQuest Psychology, CINAHL, Ovid Medline, and Ovid PsychINFO) using synonyms of cognitive load and paramedical contexts. Included articles were full text, peer reviewed empirical research, with a focus on cognitive load and EMS work. Two reviewers screened titles, abstracts, and full text using a traffic light system against the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The quality of evidence was assessed using the GRADE framework. This study was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022384246). No funding was received for this research.Results: The searches identified 73 unique articles and after title/abstract and full text screening, 25 articles were included in the final review. Synthesis of the research revealed 10 categories of findings in the area. These are clinical performance, cognitive processes, emotional responses, physical expenditure, physiological responses, equipment and ergonomics, expertise and experience, multiple loads, cognitive load measures, and task complexity.Conclusions: From these findings it was determined that there is agreement in terms of what factors influence cognitive load in paramedical contexts, such as cognitive processes, task complexity, physical expenditure, level of experience, multiple types of loads, and the use of equipment. Cognitive load influences clinical task performance and has a bi-directional relationship with emotion. However, the literature is mixed regarding physiological responses to cognitive load, and how they are best measured. These findings highlight potential intervention points where cognitive load can be managed or reduced to improve working conditions for EMS clinicians and safety for their patients.

BACKGROUND: Self-reported adherence to the Mediterranean diet has been modestly inversely associated with incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in cohort studies. There is uncertainty about the validity and magnitude of this association due to subjective reporting of diet. The association has not been evaluated using an objectively measured biomarker of the Mediterranean diet. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We derived a biomarker score based on 5 circulating carotenoids and 24 fatty acids that discriminated between the Mediterranean or habitual diet arms of a parallel design, 6-month partial-feeding randomised controlled trial (RCT) conducted between 2013 and 2014, the MedLey trial (128 participants out of 166 randomised). We applied this biomarker score in an observational study, the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-InterAct case-cohort study, to assess the association of the score with T2D incidence over an average of 9.7 years of follow-up since the baseline (1991 to 1998). We included 22,202 participants, of whom 9,453 were T2D cases, with relevant biomarkers from an original case-cohort of 27,779 participants sampled from a cohort of 340,234 people. As a secondary measure of the Mediterranean diet, we used a score estimated from dietary-self report. Within the trial, the biomarker score discriminated well between the 2 arms; the cross-validated C-statistic was 0.88 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.82 to 0.94). The score was inversely associated with incident T2D in EPIC-InterAct: the hazard ratio (HR) per standard deviation of the score was 0.71 (95% CI: 0.65 to 0.77) following adjustment for sociodemographic, lifestyle and medical factors, and adiposity. In comparison, the HR per standard deviation of the self-reported Mediterranean diet was 0.90 (95% CI: 0.86 to 0.95). Assuming the score was causally associated with T2D, higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet in Western European adults by 10 percentiles of the score was estimated to reduce the incidence of T2D by 11% (95% CI: 7% to 14%). The study limitations included potential measurement error in nutritional biomarkers, unclear specificity of the biomarker score to the Mediterranean diet, and possible residual confounding. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that objectively assessed adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with lower risk of T2D and that even modestly higher adherence may have the potential to reduce the population burden of T2D meaningfully. PURPOSE: Reporting guidelines facilitate quality and completeness in research reporting. The CONsolidated Standards Of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement is widely applied to dietary and nutrition trials but has no extension specific to nutrition. Evidence suggests poor reporting in nutrition research. The Federation of European Nutrition Societies led an initiative to make recommendations for a nutrition extension to the CONSORT statement towards a more robust reporting of the evidence base. METHODS: An international working group was formed of nutrition researchers from 14 institutions in 12 different countries and on five continents. Using meetings over a period of one year, we interrogated the CONSORT statement specifically for its application to report nutrition trials. RESULTS: We provide a total of 28 new nutrition-specific recommendations or emphasised recommendations for the reporting of the introduction (three), methods (twelve), results (five) and discussion (eight). We also added two additional recommendations that were not allocated under the standard CONSORT headings. CONCLUSION: We identify a need to provide guidance in addition to CONSORT to improve the quality and consistency of the reporting and propose key considerations for further development of formal guidelines for the reporting of nutrition trials. Readers are encouraged to engage in this process, provide comments and conduct specific studies to inform further work on the development of reporting guidelines for nutrition trials.

Single particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) is an emerging technique that is capable of simultaneous measurement of the size and number concentration of metal-containing nanoparticles (NPs) at environmentally relevant levels. Although spICP-MS is widely applied to different fields, challenges remain in obtaining accurate and consistent particle number concentration (PNC) measurements. This paper presents, for the first time, a rigorous assessment of spICP-MS capabilities for measuring the PNC of gold NP (AuNP) suspensions of different sizes and coatings. The calibration of spICP-MS was accomplished with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) AuNP reference material (RM) 8013. The comparability of both spICP-MS direct and derived determination of PNC and reference PNC derived based on the mean particle size or the particle size distribution obtained by different reference sizing techniques was first assessed for NIST AuNP RM 8012, nominal diameter 30 nm. To enable a proper assessment of the accuracy of the spICP-MS results, a comprehensive estimation of the expanded uncertainty for PNC determination was carried out. Regardless of NP size or coating, a good agreement (90-110%) between spICP-MS direct determination of PNC and reported PNCs was obtained for all of the suspensions studied only when reliable in-house Au mass fractions and thorough mean particle size determinations were included in the calculation of the derived PNCs. The use of the particle size distribution over the mean size to derive PNCs resulted in larger differences for materials with a low contribution (<2%) of smaller NPs (30 nm), materials with a higher polydispersity (100 nm), or materials with two distinct subpopulations of particles (60 nm), regardless of NP coating.

The rising prevalence rates of age-related cognitive impairment are a worldwide public concern, bringing about a surge in the number of "brain training" programs commercially available to the general public. Numerous companies advertise that their products improve memory and protect against cognitive decline, though researchers have voiced concerns regarding the validity of such claims. To address this issue, the current meta-analytic investigation examined evidence from 43 studies (encompassing 2,636 participants) to evaluate the efficacy of commercial training programs within two separate populations: healthy older adults and older adults with mild cognitive-impairment (MCI). Seven programs were identified: BrainGymmer, BrainHQ, CogMed, CogniFit, Dakim, Lumosity, and MyBrainTrainer. Analyses yielded small, significant near-transfer effects for both healthy and MCI samples. Far-transfer was not observed for the MCI sample, whereas a small, significant effect was found for subjective but not objective measures of far-transfer in the healthy sample. Analyses of individual domains (combining near-and far-transfer outcomes) yielded significant transfer to executive-functioning, memory, and processing-speed in healthy older adults. After adjusting for publication bias, only the effect size for processing speed remained significant. Transfer to attention, objective everyday functioning, fluid-intelligence, and visuospatial domains was not significant. Thus, whilst "brain training" may be suitable for enjoyment and entertainment purposes, there is currently insufficient empirical evidence to support that such training can improve memory, general cognition, or everyday functioning. This area of research is still in its infancy and warrants further investigation to provide more substantial evidence regarding the efficacy of this rapidly expanding industry.

Although the long-term effects of a Mediterranean-style dietary pattern (MDP) on cognition and overall mental well-being have been consistently described, the short-term effects of the MDP on cognitive performance, mood and anxiety have not been as widely reviewed. Therefore, the aims of this systematic review were to synthesise the evidence from randomised controlled trials (RCT), to examine whether a MDP can alter cognition and overall mental well-being in the short-term (up to 10 d). This will also be used to identify research gaps and to inform the design of future acute RCT in the area. Ovid Embase, Ovid MEDLINE and Web of Science Core Collection were searched from inception to 8 December 2020. The data were synthesised narratively with no quantitative synthesis. The detailed protocol is available on PROSPERO, with the registration number CRD42021221085. A total of 3002 studies were initially identified. After the deduplication and screening stages, four studies (three articles and one conference proceeding) were eligible to be included. Despite the very limited data obtained, the literature suggests that a MDP can improve cognition and mood in the short-term. Specifically, improvements in attention, alertness and contentment were consistently reported. A MDP appears as a promising strategy to improve short-term cognitive and mental health. A limitation of this review is the small number of studies identified; therefore, future studies are required to confirm these initial novel findings and to provide granularity as to which domains are most responsive and in which population subgroups.

Chronic inflammation is known to be a predominant factor in the development of many age-related conditions including CVD, type II diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. Previous studies have demonstrated that during the ageing process there is an increase in inflammatory biomarkers, which may be partially brought about by detrimental changes in the gut microbiota. The Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and physical activity (PA) are protective against inflammation and chronic disease, and emerging evidence has shown that these effects may be partially mediated through favourable changes in the gut microbiota. In this review, we have evaluated the published literature on the effect of a MedDiet and PA on the gut microbiota. We also discuss the relationship between the gut microbiota and inflammation with a focus on healthy ageing. While inconsistent study designs make forming definitive conclusions challenging, the current evidence suggests that both a MedDiet and PA are capable of modifying the gut microbiota in a way that is beneficial to host health. For example, the increases in the relative abundance of SCFA producing bacteria that are considered to possess anti-inflammatory properties. Modification of the gut microbiota through a MedDiet and PA presents as a potential method to attenuate age-related increases in inflammation, and additional studies utilising older individuals are needed to fill the knowledge gaps existing in current literature.

There is limited information regarding the nutrition profile and diet quality of meal plans from currently popular weight loss (WL) diets in Australia. This includes the energy content (kilojoules), the macronutrient distribution and the micronutrient composition. Further, these diets have not been compared with current government guidelines and healthy eating principles (HEP) for nutritional adequacy. Popular diets were identified through grey literature, trending searches and relative popularity in Australia. Meal plans for each diet were analysed using Foodworks Dietary Software to determine food group intake, micronutrient and macronutrient distribution. The results indicated that all popular diets assessed deviated from government recommended HEP such as the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and the Mediterranean diet. In most cases, both popular diets and the HEP had low intakes of multiple food groups, low intakes of essential micronutrients and a distorted macronutrient distribution. Popular diets may not provide adequate nutrition to meet needs, particularly in the long term and potentially resulting in micronutrient deficiency. When energy restricting for WL, meal plans should be highly individualised in conjunction with a qualified nutrition professional to ensure adequate dietary intake.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss diets continue to rise in popularity; however, the associated costs are seldom reported. Certain weight loss diets may be unaffordable and differ from their traditional nutrition composition to include non-conventional premium products. In contrast, healthy eating principles such as the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating (AGHE) and the Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) place an emphasis on fresh produce and staple foods but are sometimes thought to be unaffordable. A new methodology was piloted to assess the cost of weight loss diets using seven meal plans. METHODS: Seven meal plans were analysed to quantify the absolute grams required of all ingredients across seven days and multiplied by the cost of the ingredient per gram to determine the total cost of each ingredient based on unit size and price. The weekly grocery shopping cost was determined through summation of all ingredients and their entire unit size to compare weekly costs. RESULTS: Weekly meal plans (absolute grams) cost between $93-193AUD. The AGHE meal plan was the least expensive and 8 Weeks to Wow was the most expensive. Weekly grocery shopping of entire units cost between $345-$625AUD, over $100AUD greater than the spending of an average Australian ($237AUD/week). CONCLUSIONS: The financial feasibility for long-term sustainment of weight loss diets may be questionable for groups including low-income earners and low socioeconomic status. Further, when dietary patterns are adapted for weight loss, or followed by consumers, deviations from foundational principles tend to occur which may influence overall cost.

INTRODUCTION: Current research evidence suggests that people with schizophrenia have sensory processing difficulties. Sensory modulation has growing evidence for use in this population. This study aimed to evaluate the extent to which health, social, cognitive, and occupational functioning outcomes were impacted by sensory modulation interventions for people with schizophrenia. METHODS: A prospective observational cohort study using a waitlist control design was used in two large hospital and health services in Queensland, Australia. The study recruited patients who used sensory modulation (n = 30) across the two hospitals and those who did not use sensory modulation interventions as a control (n = 11). Results were analysed using a series of planned comparisons including independent and paired t-tests, and mixed ANOVA was used whenever statistically indicated. The analysed measures were pre- and post-intervention scores. RESULTS: This study found no statically significant differences between the control and intervention groups at both pre- and post-intervention. However, analysis of results from within the intervention group showed statistically significant improvements between pre- and post-test scores on distress, occupational functioning, and health and social functioning but not on sensory processing and global cognitive processing. Further analysis of results from this study, compared with those from an earlier study on the general population showed significant differences in Low Registration and Sensation Avoiding, as measured by the Adult/Adolescent Sensory Profile, between participants with schizophrenia and those without schizophrenia. CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence to suggest that sensory modulation interventions can be complementary to standard care when utilised appropriately in clinical settings. Findings also suggest that the sensory profile of people with schizophrenia is different to that of the general population and this may have clinical implications. Further longitudinal research is needed with larger and randomised samples, using more targeted measures to better explore effectiveness of sensory modulation interventions.

This guideline advises on the management of patients with egg allergy. Most commonly egg allergy presents in infancy, with a prevalence of approximately 2% in children and 0.1% in adults. A clear clinical history will confirm the diagnosis in most cases. Investigation by measuring egg-specific IgE (by skin prick testing or specific IgE assay) is useful in moderate-severe cases or where there is diagnostic uncertainty. Following an acute allergic reaction, egg avoidance advice should be provided. Egg allergy usually resolves, and reintroduction can be achieved at home if reactions have been mild and there is no asthma. Patients with a history of severe reactions or asthma should have reintroduction guided by a specialist. All children with egg allergy should receive the MMR vaccine. Most adults and children with egg allergy can receive the influenza vaccine in primary care, unless they have had anaphylaxis to egg requiring intensive care support. Yellow Fever vaccines should only be considered in egg-allergic patients under the guidance of an allergy specialist. This guideline was prepared by the Standards of Care Committee (SOCC) of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI) and is intended for allergists and others with a special interest in allergy. The recommendations are evidence based. Where evidence was lacking, consensus was reached by the panel of specialists on the committee. The document encompasses epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and co-morbid associations.

Background: Adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with higher cognitive function and reduced risk of dementia in Mediterranean populations. However, few studies have investigated the association between Mediterranean diet adherence and cognition in populations outside of the Mediterranean basin. Furthermore, it is currently unknown whether the association between Mediterranean diet adherence and cognitive function differs between middle-aged and older individuals.Methods: Cross-sectional (n = 894) and longitudinal (n = 530) multivariable analyses were undertaken using data from community-dwelling adults from the Maine-Syracuse Longitudinal Study (MSLS). Mediterranean diet adherence was measured by applying a literature-based Mediterranean diet score to food frequency questionnaire data. Cognitive function was assessed with a battery of tests and composites scores were computed for global cognitive function, Visual-Spatial Organisation and Memory, verbal memory, working memory, scanning and tracking and abstract reasoning.Results: No cross-sectional associations between Mediterranean diet adherence and cognitive function were detected. Over a period of five years, higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet was associated with improvements in Global Cognitive Function, Visual-Spatial Organisation and Memory and scanning and tracking in participants ≥70 years. No significant longitudinal associations were observed for participants <70 years.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with better cognitive performance, and therefore less cognitive decline, in older but not middle-aged individuals.

Background The Mediterranean diet has been linked to improved cognitive function and reduced risk of dementia. However, a traditional Mediterranean diet may not meet calcium requirements for older non-Mediterranean populations, which could limit long-term sustainability in Western countries. The current study therefore aimed to determine the cognitive and psychological effects of a Mediterranean diet with adequate calcium for an ageing Australian population. Method: A randomized controlled cross-over design trial compared a Mediterranean diet with 3-4 daily serves of dairy food (MedDairy) with a low-fat (LF) control diet. Forty-one participants aged ≥45 years with systolic blood pressure ≥120 mm Hg and at least two other risk factors for cardiovascular disease completed each dietary intervention for 8 weeks, with an 8-week washout period separating interventions. Attention, processing speed, memory and planning were assessed at the start and end of each intervention using the Cambridge Automated Neuropsychological Test Battery. Mood and health-related quality of life were evaluated using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Dementia risk was also measured using the Framingham Vascular Risk and CAIDE scores. Results Significant improvements were observed for processing speed (P = .04), Total Mood Disturbance (P = .01), Tension (P = .03), Depression (P = .03), Anger (P = .02), and Confusion (P = .004) following the MedDairy intervention. No significant effects were found for attention, memory and planning, or measures of dementia risk. Conclusion Our study provides evidence that a Mediterranean diet supplemented with dairy foods may benefit cognitive function and psychological well-being in an ageing population at risk of dementia.

Episodic memory allows humans to retrieve and distinguish specific memories. The formation of item-context bindings, whereby the to-be-recalled items are tied to aspects of the encoding context, is important to the effective operation of episodic memory. The self-reference effect refers to the memory advantage for items encoded in relation to the self versus another. The current research examined the extent to which 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old children (N = 138) can recognize item-context bindings and whether binding recognition is facilitated when the context is the self versus other compared with one of two dogs. Children encoded line drawings of objects in the context of one of two referents. The referents were photographs of Bull mastiff and German shepherd dogs (dogs condition) or photographs of the participant child's face or another child's face (people condition). Children then completed a recognition test. Responses to different trial types were combined to derive indices of item discrimination, referent discrimination, and binding discrimination. Children of all ages discriminated items and referents, and there were no significant differences between the conditions. Discrimination of bindings did not exceed chance in the dogs condition but was significantly more accurate in the people condition. Replicating previous findings, self-reference advantages were observed on item discrimination and referent discrimination. Extending previous research, there was also a self-reference advantage on binding discrimination. The findings are consistent with an attentional capture interpretation. One's own face captures attention, facilitating encoding of the bindings between the objects and referents.

Words that represent animate entities (e.g., dog) are recalled from long-term memory more accurately than words representing inanimate entities (e.g., pan). In this research, we examined whether the animacy effect extends to working memory (WM). The potential roles of WM maintenance strategies (rehearsal and directed attention) were also examined. Participants performed serial order recall tasks with sets of 3, 4, 5 or 6 words that were either animate or inanimate. In stage 1 of Experiment 1, participants received no instructions regarding how to maintain the words. In stage 2, participants received either no instructions, sub-vocal rehearsal or directed attention instructions. In all instruction groups and at both stages, significant animacy effects were observed at set sizes of 4, 5 and 6 but not set size 3. The animacy effect was larger at set size 5 than other set sizes. In Experiment 2, participants completed the task with and without articulatory suppression. In both conditions, animacy effects were observed at set sizes 4, 5 and 6, but not at set size 3. The magnitude of the animacy effect declined as set size increased from 4 to 6. Animacy appears to enhance serial recall, but the effect is not dependent on rehearsal.

Disclosure by those with eating difficulties is of considerable importance to clinicians and researchers. The aim of the present study was to explore variability in factors considered likely to influence the decision to disclose during psychological therapy by people who experience such difficulties. Thirty-seven participants recruited through a UK-based eating disorder charity completed a Q-sort task. This invited them to sort 47 statements onto a grid reflecting what would make them more or less likely to disclose in therapy. The thirty-seven Q-sorts were analysed using PQ method software. This resulted in the extraction of three factors explaining 41 percent of the variance. Participants loading on the first factor considered maintaining an eating disorder identity as most influential whilst participants loading on the second factor considered the therapeutic relationship as most influential. Those loading on the third factor considered personal readiness and feelings of security as most influential. This study suggests that clinicians need to assess influences on the decision to disclose for individual clients and to modify the early stages of intervention accordingly. Future research could assess the utility of using the Q-sort process and materials in this study as a way to elicit influences on disclosure decisions.

Tyrosine hydroxylase is the key enzyme controlling the synthesis of the catecholamines including dopamine. The breakdown of dopamine into toxic compounds has been suggested to have a key role in the degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson's disease. Humans are unique in containing four isoforms of tyrosine hydroxylase, but understanding of the role of these isoforms under normal conditions and in disease states is limited. The aim of this work was to determine the level and distribution of the four human isoforms in tissues from healthy controls and patients with Parkinson's disease. The results show that isoform 1 and isoform 2 are the major tyrosine hydroxylase isoforms in human brain, but that tyrosine hydroxylase isoform 2 is more abundant in the substantia nigra than the tyrosine hydroxylase isoform 1. The two minor isoforms, isoform 3 and isoform 4, are expressed at a proportionally higher level in the terminal field regions (caudate and putamen) compared to the substantia nigra. There was a selective loss of tyrosine hydroxylase isoform 1 in Parkinson's disease compared to age-matched controls and a corresponding increase in the proportion of tyrosine hydroxylase isoform 2. Phosphorylation of serine 40 was significantly increased in caudate, putamen and ventral tegmental area, but not in the substantia nigra, in Parkinson's disease brain. These results show a selective sparing of tyrosine hydroxylase isoform 2 in Parkinson's disease. Isoform 2 exhibits a reduced capacity for activation compared to isoform 1, which may account for the selective sparing of cells expressing isoform 2 in Parkinson's disease. Surviving neurons in Parkinson's disease brain exhibit a substantial increase in tyrosine hydroxylase phosphorylation consistent with a compensatory mechanism of increased dopamine synthesis in the terminal field regions.

BACKGROUND: Communication between patients and health providers influences patient satisfaction, but it is unknown whether similarity in communication styles results in higher patient satisfaction. METHODS: This study was conducted in the Smilow Cancer Hospital Breast Center. During routine follow-up visits, patients completed a Communication Styles Assessment (CSA), health survey (SF-12), Princess Margaret Hospital Satisfaction with Doctor Questionnaire, and brief demographic form. Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers were also asked to complete the CSA. Patients and providers were blinded to each other's responses. A communication styles concordance score was calculated as the Pearson correlation between 80 binary CSA items for each provider/patient pair. Factors affecting patient satisfaction scores were assessed in mixed-effects models. RESULTS: In total, 330 patients were invited to participate; of these 289 enrolled and 245 returned surveys. One hundred seventy-four completed all survey components, and 18 providers completed the CSA. Among the factors considered, physical health score (effect size = 0.0058, 95% CI 0.00051 to 0.0011, p = 0.032) and employment status (0.12, 95% CI - 0.0094 to 0.25, p = 0.069) had the greatest impact on patient satisfaction. However, patients who were not employed and less physically healthy had significantly elevated satisfaction scores when their communication style was more similar to their provider's (1.52, 95% CI 0.66 to 2.38, p = 0.0016). CONCLUSIONS: Patients who were physically healthy and employed were generally more satisfied with their care. The similarity in communication styles of patients and providers had a greater impact on patient satisfaction for patients who were less physically healthy and not employed.

The Mediterranean diet offers a range of health benefits. However, previous studies indicate that the restricted consumption of red meat in the diet may affect long-term sustainability in non-Mediterranean countries. A 24-week randomised controlled parallel cross-over design compared a Mediterranean diet supplemented with 2-3 serves per week of fresh, lean pork (MedPork) with a low-fat control diet (LF). Thirty-three participants at risk of CVD followed each intervention for 8 weeks, with an 8-week washout period separating interventions. The primary outcome was home-measured systolic blood pressure. Secondary outcomes included diastolic blood pressure, fasting lipids, glucose, insulin, C-reactive protein (CRP), body composition and dietary adherence. During the MedPork intervention, participants achieved high adherence to dietary guidelines. Compared with the MedPork intervention, the LF intervention led to greater reductions in weight (Δ = -0·65; 95 % CI -0·04, -1·25 kg, P = 0·04), BMI (Δ = -0·25; 95 % CI -0·03, -0·47 kg/m2, P = 0·01) and waist circumference (Δ = -1·40; 95 % CI -0·45, -2·34 cm, P < 0·01). No significant differences were observed for blood pressure, lipids, glucose, insulin or CRP. These findings indicate that Australians are capable of adhering to a Mediterranean diet with 2-3 weekly serves of fresh, lean pork. Larger intervention studies are now required to demonstrate clinical efficacy of the diet in populations with elevated blood pressure.

Single particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) is an emerging technique capable of simultaneously measuring nanoparticle size and number concentration of metal-containing nanoparticles (NPs) at environmental levels. single particle ICP-MS will become an established measurement method once the metrological quality of the measurement results it produces have been proven incontrovertibly. This Article presents the first validation of spICP-MS capabilities for measuring mean NP size and number size distribution of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The validation is achieved by (i) calibration based on the consensus value for particle size derived from six different sizing techniques applied to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Reference Material (RM) 8013; (ii) comparison with high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM) used as a reference method, which is linked to the International System of Units (SI) through a calibration standard characterized by the NIST metrological atomic force microscope; and (iii) evaluation of the uncertainty associated with the measurement of the mean particle size to enable comparison of the spICP-MS and HR-SEM methods. After establishing HR-SEM and spICP-MS measurement protocols, both methods were used to characterize commercial AuNP suspensions of three different sizes (30, 60, and 100 nm) with four different coatings and surface charge at pH 7. Single particle ICP-MS measurements (corroborated by HR-SEM) revealed the existence of two distinct subpopulations of particles in the number size distributions for four of the 60 nm commercial suspensions, a fact that was not apparent in the measurement results supplied by the vendor using transmission electron microscopy. This finding illustrates the utility of spICP-MS for routine characterization of commercial AuNP suspensions regardless of size or coating.
