RESUMEN

In our research, we utilized six small-fruited pepper germplasms as materials, selected cotyledons with the petiole and hypocotyls as explants, and conducted in vitro regeneration studies. Our outcomes specify that the most suitable explant is cotyledon with the petiole, and the suitable genotype is HNUCA341. The optimal medium for inducing and elongating adventitious buds for this genotype is Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) + 9.12 µM Zeatin (ZT) + 0.57 µM 3-Indoleacetic acid (IAA), with a bud induction rate of 44.4%. The best rooting induction medium is MS + 1.14 µM IAA, with a rooting rate of 86.7%. Research on the addition of exogenous hormones has revealed that the induction speed of buds in small-fruited pepper (HNUCA341) in the combination of ZT and IAA hormones (abbreviated as ZI) is quicker, and the induction effect is better. The histological observations indicate that ZI treatment accelerates the initiation of explant division and differentiation, causing a shorter duration of vascular-bundle tissue production. The plant hormone signaling pathway was significantly enriched by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis, including ARR9 (LOC107843874, LOC107843885), ARR4 (LOC107848380, LOC107862455), AHK4 (LOC107870540), AHP1 (LOC107839518), LAX2 (LOC107846008), SAUR36 (LOC107852624), IAA8 (LOC107841020), IAA16 (LOC107839415), PYL4 (LOC107843441), and PYL6 (LOC107871127); these significantly enriched genes may be associated with in vitro regeneration. In addition, the carbon metabolism pathway and plant mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway are also significantly enriched in KEGG. The results of the Gene Ontology (GO) analysis revealed that differentially expressed genes related to carbon metabolism and fixation, photosynthesis and MAPK signaling pathways were upregulated under ZI treatment. It was found that they might be associated with enhanced regeneration in vitro. Furthermore, we also screened out differentially expressed transcription factors, primarily from the MYB, bHLH, AP2/ERF, and NAC families. Overall, our work accumulated important data for the in-depth analysis of the molecular mechanism of in vitro regeneration of pepper, and provides valuable germplasm for establishing an efficient stable pepper genetic-transformation system based on tissue culture.

RESUMEN

Salt stress imposes significant plant limitations, altering their molecular, physiological, and biochemical functions. Pepper, a valuable herbaceous plant species of the Solanaceae family, is particularly susceptible to salt stress. This study aimed to elucidate the physiological and molecular mechanisms that contribute to the development of salt tolerance in two pepper species (Capsicum baccatum (moderate salt tolerant) and Capsicum chinense (salt sensitive)) through a transcriptome and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) approach to provide detailed insights. A continuous increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels in C. chinense and higher activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD) in C. baccatum indicated more tissue damage in C. chinense than in C. baccatum. In transcriptome analysis, we identified 39 DEGs related to salt stress. Meanwhile, KEGG pathway analysis revealed enrichment of MAPK and hormone signaling pathways, with six DEGs each. Through WGCNA, the ME.red module was identified as positively correlated. Moreover, 10 genes, A-ARR (CQW23_24856), CHIb (CQW23_04881), ERF1b (CQW23_08898), PP2C (CQW23_15893), ABI5 (CQW23_29948), P450 (CQW23_16085), Aldedh1 (CQW23_06433), GDA (CQW23_12764), Aldedh2 (CQW23_14182), and Aldedh3 (CQW23_11481), were validated by qRT-PCR. This study provides valuable insights into the genetic mechanisms underlying salt stress tolerance in pepper. It offers potential targets for future breeding efforts to enhance salt stress resilience in this crop.

RESUMEN

Drought stress caused by the global climate considerably disturbs plant yield and growth. Here, we explored the putative roles of silicon in repressing drought mechanisms in pepper and the prominent involvement of secondary metabolites, GA pathway, and photosystem II. Our research revealed that the transcript level of the flavonoid biosynthesis-associated genes, including the PAL, 4-CL, CHS, FLS-1, F3H and DFR, progressively induced in the pepper leaves treated with silicon during the drought stress duration. Moreover, the phenolic and flavonoid compounds extensively induced in the pepper plants. Furthermore, the pepper plants markedly inhibited chlorophyll catabolic-allied genes, senescence-related marker gene, and the Rbohs gene. Silicon application also sustained the membrane stability, supported via fewer electrolyte leakage processes and minor, O2- H2O2 and MDA levels during drought. Apart from this, the pepper plants significantly induced the expression level of the photosystem II-related genes, osmoprotectants pathway-associated genes, and antioxidant defense genes. Moreover, the GA biosynthesis genes were prompted, while the ABA signaling and biosynthesis genes were suppressed in the silicon-supplemented plants. These consequences infer that the role of Si supplementation on enhancing drought tolerance could be elucidated through the activation of secondary metabolites, flavonoid biosynthesis, osmoprotectants, GA pathway, the efficiency of PSII, and the suppression of chlorophyll degradation. Our research outcomes unveil new and remarkable characteristics of silicon supplementation and offer a series of candidate targets for improving the tolerance of pepper plants to drought stress.

RESUMEN

In recent years, ceramic cells based on high proton conductivity have attracted much attention and can be employed for hydrogen production and electricity generation, especially at low temperatures. Nevertheless, attaining a high power output and durability is challenging, especially at low operational temperatures. In this regard, we design semiconductor heterostructure SFT-ZnO (SrFe0.3TiO3-ZnO) materials to function as an electrolyte for fuel cell and electrolysis applications. Using this approach, the functional semiconductor heterostructure can deliver a better power output and high ionic and proton conductivity at low operational temperatures. The prepared cell in fuel cell mode has demonstrated excellent performance of 700 mW cm-2 and proton performance of 540 mW cm-2 at the low temperature of 520 °C, suggesting dominant proton conduction. Further, the prepared cell delivers exceptional current densities of 1.18 and 0.38 A cm-2 (at 1.6 and 1.3 V, respectively) at 520 °C in the electrolysis mode. Our electrochemical cell is stable in fuel and electrolysis mode at a low temperature of 500 °C.

RESUMEN

The development of low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs) is of significant importance for realizing the widespread application of SOFCs. This has stimulated a substantial materials research effort in developing high oxide-ion conductivity in the electrolyte layer of SOFCs. In this context, for the first time, a dielectric material, CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) is designed for LT-SOFCs electrolyte application in this study. Both individual CCTO and its heterostructure materials with a p-type Ni0.8Co0.15Al0.05LiO2-δ (NCAL) semiconductor are evaluated as alternative electrolytes in LT-SOFC at 450-550 °C. The single cell with the individual CCTO electrolyte exhibits a power output of approximately 263 mW cm-2 and an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.95 V at 550 °C, while the cell with the CCTO-NCAL heterostructure electrolyte capably delivers an improved power output of approximately 605 mW cm-2 along with a higher OCV over 1.0 V, which indicates the introduction of high hole-conducting NCAL into the CCTO could enhance the cell performance rather than inducing any potential short-circuiting risk. It is found that these promising outcomes are due to the interplay of the dielectric material, its structure, and overall properties that led to improve electrochemical mechanism in CCTO-NCAL. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations provide the detailed information about the electronic and structural properties of the CCTO and NCAL and their heterostructure CCTO-NCAL. Our study thus provides a new approach for developing new advanced electrolytes for LT-SOFCs.

RESUMEN

Ceramic fuel cells presently hold an important position in the future of sustainable energy. However, new concepts and designs are vital for each individual cell's component materials to improve the overall power output and stability. The limited ionic conductivity of the electrolyte component is one major challenge among these. In the present work, we developed nanosheets with a cubic fluoride structure of CeO2 and introduced the di- and tri-valent doping of La and Sr to study their impact on oxygen vacancies and its ionic transport, keeping in mind the fact that CeO2 is reduced when exposed to a reducing atmosphere. The attained La- and Sr-doped fluorite structures of CeO2 exhibited good ionic conductivity of >0.05 S cm-1 at low temperature, and their use in a fuel cell resulted in achieving a power output of >900 mW cm-2 while operating at 550 °C. Therefore, we have found that laterally combining di- and tri-valent doping could be textured to give a highly oxygen-deficient CeO2 structure with high ionic transport. Furthermore, various microscopic and spectroscopic analyses, such as HR-TEM, XPS, Raman, UV-visible, EIS, and density functional theory, were applied to investigate the change in structural properties and mechanism of the ionic transport of the synthesized La and Sr co-doped CeO2 electrolyte. This work provides some new insights for designing high-ionic-conductivity electrolytes from low-cost semiconductor oxides for energy storage and conversion devices.

RESUMEN

Salinity stress is a major threat to crop growth and productivity. Millets are stress-tolerant crops that can withstand the environmental constraints. Foxtail millet is widely recognized as a drought and salinity-tolerant crop owing to its efficient ROS scavenging mechanism. Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) is one of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging enzymes that leads to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) detoxification and stabilization of the internal biochemical state of the cell under stress. This inherent capacity of the APX enzyme can further be enhanced by the application of an external mitigant. This study focuses on the impact of salt (NaCl) and selenium (Se) application on the APX enzyme activity of foxtail millet using in silico and in-vitro techniques and mRNA expression studies. The NaCl was applied in the concentrations, i.e., 150 mM and 200 mM, while the Se was applied in 1 µM, 5 µM, and 10 µM concentrations. The in silico studies involved three-dimensional structure modeling and molecular docking. The in vitro studies comprised the morphological and biochemical parameters, alongside mRNA expression studies in foxtail millet under NaCl stress and Se applications. The in silico studies revealed that the APX enzyme showed better interaction with Se as compared to NaCl, thus suggesting the enzyme-modulating role of Se. The morphological and biochemical analysis indicated that Se alleviated the NaCl (150 mM and 200 mM) and induced symptoms at 1 µM as compared to 5 and 10 µM by enhancing the morphological parameters, upregulating the gene expression and enzyme activity of APX, and ultimately reducing the H2O2 content significantly. The transcriptomic studies confirmed the upregulation of chloroplastic APX in response to salt stress and selenium supplementation. Hence, it can be concluded that Se as a mitigant at lower concentrations can alleviate NaCl stress in foxtail millet.

RESUMEN

Salinity is one of the most concerning ecological restrictions influencing plant growth, which poses a devastating threat to global agriculture. Surplus quantities of ROS generated under stress conditions have negative effects on plants' growth and survival by damaging cellular components, including nucleic acids, lipids, proteins and carbohydrates. However, low levels of ROS are also necessary because of their role as signalling molecules in various development-related pathways. Plants possess sophisticated antioxidant systems for scavenging as well as regulating ROS levels to protect cells from damage. Proline is one such crucial non-enzymatic osmolyte of antioxidant machinery that functions in the reduction of stress. There has been extensive research on improving the tolerance, effectiveness, and protection of plants against stress, and to date, various substances have been used to mitigate the adverse effects of salt. In the present study Zinc (Zn) was applied to elucidate its effect on proline metabolism and stress-responsive mechanisms in proso millet. The results of our study indicate the negative impact on growth and development with increasing treatments of NaCl. However, the low doses of exogenous Zn proved beneficial in mitigating the effects of NaCl by improving morphological and biochemical features. In salt-treated plants, the low doses of Zn (1 mg/L, 2 mg/L) rescued the negative impact of salt (150mM) as evidenced by increase in shoot length (SL) by 7.26% and 25.5%, root length (RL) by 21.84% and 39.07% and membrane stability index (MSI) by 132.57% and 151.58% respectively. The proline content improved at all concentrations with maximum increase of 66.65% at 2 mg/L Zn. Similarly, the low doses of Zn also rescued the salt induced stress at 200mM NaCl. The enzymes related to proline biosynthesis were also improved at lower doses of Zn. In salt treated plants (150mM), Zn (1 mg/L, 2 mg/L) increased the activity of P5CS by 19.344% and 21%. The P5CR and OAT activities were also improved with maximum increase of 21.66% and 21.84% at 2 mg/L Zn respectively. Similarly, the low doses of Zn also increased the activities of P5CS, P5CR and OAT at 200mM NaCl. Whereas P5CDH enzyme activity showed a decrease of 82.5% at 2mg/L Zn+150mM NaCl and 56.7% at 2mg/L Zn+200 mM NaCl. These results strongly imply the modulatory role of Zn in maintaining of proline pool during NaCl stress.

RESUMEN

Biomass-based photothermal conversion is of great importance for solar energy utilization toward carbon neutrality. Herein, a hybrid solar evaporator is innovatively designed via UV-induced printing of pyrolyzed Kudzu biochar on hydrophilic cotton fabric (KB@CF) to integrate all parameters in a single evaporator, such as solar evaporation, salt collection, waste heat recovery for thermoelectricity, sieving oil emulsions, and water disinfection from microorganisms. The UV-induced printed fabric demonstrates stronger material adhesion as compared to the conventional dip-dry technique. The hybrid solar evaporator gives an enhanced evaporation rate (2.32 kg/m2 h), and the complementary waste heat recovery system generates maximum open-circuit voltage (Vout ∼ 143.9 mV) and solar to vapor conversion efficiency (92%), excluding heat losses under one sun illumination. More importantly, 99.98% of photothermal-induced bacterial killing efficiency was achieved within 20 min under 1 kW m-2 using the hyperthermia effect of Kudzu biochar. Furthermore, numerical heat-transfer simulations were performed successfully to analyze the enhanced interfacial heat accumulation (75.3 °C) and heat flux distribution of the thermoelectric generators under one sun. We firmly believe that the safe use of bio-polluted invasive species in hybrid solar-driven evaporation systems eases the environmental pressure toward carbon neutrality.

RESUMEN

Improving the ionic conductivity and slow oxygen reduction electro-catalytic activity of reactions occurring at low operating temperature would do wonders for the widespread use of low-operating temperature ceramic fuel cells (LT-CFCs; 450-550 °C). In this work, we present a novel semiconductor heterostructure composite made of a spinel-like structure of Co0.6Mn0.4Fe0.4Al1.6O4 (CMFA) and ZnO, which functions as an effective electrolyte membrane for solid oxide fuel cells. For enhanced fuel cell performance at sub-optimal temperatures, the CMFA-ZnO heterostructure composite was developed. We have shown that a button-sized SOFC fueled by H2 and ambient air can provide 835 mW/cm2 of power and 2216 mA/cm2 of current at 550 °C, possibly functioning down to 450 °C. In addition, the oxygen vacancy formation energy and activation energy of the CMFA-ZnO heterostructure composite is lower than those of the individual CMFA and ZnO, facilitating ion transit. The improved ionic conduction of the CMFA-ZnO heterostructure composite was investigated using several transmission and spectroscopic measures, including X-ray diffraction, photoelectron, and UV-visible spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These findings suggest that the heterostructure approach is practical for LT-SOFCs.

RESUMEN

High-performing electrolytes at low operating temperatures have become an inevitable trend in the development of low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). Such electrolytes have drawn significant attention due to their appeal for high performance. Herein, we propose a new material by doping Y3+ into Gd2O3 for LT-SOFC electrolyte use. The prepared material was characterized in terms of crystal structure, surface, and interface properties, followed by its application in LT-SOFCs. YDG delivered promising SOFC performance with a power density of 1046 mW cm-2 at 550 °C along with high ionic conductivity of 0.19 S cm-1. Moreover, impedance spectra revealed that YDG exhibited the least ohmic resistance of 0.06-0.09 Ω cm2 at 550-460 °C. Furthermore, stable operation for 60 h demonstrated the chemical stability of the material in reduced temperature environments. Density function theory was also applied to analyze the electronic band structure and density of states of the synthesized sample. Our findings thus certify that YDG as a high-performing electrolyte at low operating temperatures.

RESUMEN

Drought stress significantly restricts the growth, yield, and quality of peppers. Strigolactone (SL), a relatively new plant hormone, has shown promise in alleviating drought-related symptoms in pepper plants. However, there is limited knowledge on how SL affects the gene expression in peppers when exposed to drought stress (DS) after the foliar application of SL. To explore this, we conducted a thorough physiological and transcriptome analysis investigation to uncover the mechanisms through which SL mitigates the effects of DS on pepper seedlings. DS inhibited the growth of pepper seedlings, altered antioxidant enzyme activity, reduced relative water content (RWC), and caused oxidative damage. On the contrary, the application of SL significantly enhanced RWC, promoted root morphology, and increased leaf pigment content. SL also protected pepper seedlings from drought-induced oxidative damage by reducing MDA and H2O2 levels and maintaining POD, CAT, and SOD activity. Moreover, transcriptomic analysis revealed that differentially expressed genes were enriched in ribosomes, ABC transporters, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and Auxin/MAPK signaling pathways in DS and DS + SL treatment. Furthermore, the results of qRT-PCR showed the up-regulation of AGR7, ABI5, BRI1, and PDR4 and down-regulation of SAPK6, NTF4, PYL6, and GPX4 in SL treatment compared with drought-only treatment. In particular, the key gene for SL signal transduction, SMXL6, was down-regulated under drought. These results elucidate the molecular aspects underlying SL-mediated plant DS tolerance, and provide pivotal strategies for effectively achieving pepper drought resilience.

RESUMEN

The interfacial disorder is a general method to change the metal-oxygen compatibility and carrier density of heterostructure materials for ionic transport modulation. Herein, to enable high proton conduction, a semiconductor heterostructure based on spinel ZnFe2 O4 (ZFO) and fluorite CeO2 is developed and investigated in terms of structural characterization, first principle calculation, and electrochemical performance. Particular attention is paid to the interfacial disordering and heterojunction effects of the material. Results show that the heterostructure induces a disordered oxygen region at the hetero-interface of ZFO-CeO2 by dislocating oxygen atoms, leading to fast proton transport. As a result, the ZFO-CeO2 exhibits a high proton conductivity of 0.21 S cm-1 and promising fuel cell power output of 1070 mW cm-2 at 510 °C. Based upon these findings, a new mechanism is proposed by focusing on the change of O-O bond length to interpret the diffusion and acceleration of protons in ZFO-CeO2 on the basis of the Grotthuss mechanism. This study provides a new strategy to customize semiconductor heterostructure to enable fast proton conduction.

RESUMEN

Environmental stresses negatively affect the growth and development of plants. Several previous studies have elucidated the response mechanisms of plants to drought and heat applied separately; however, these two abiotic stresses often coincide in environmental conditions. The global climate change pattern has projected that combined drought and heat stresses will tend to increase in the near future. In this study, we down-regulated the expression of a cytokinin receptor gene SlHK2 using RNAi and investigated the role of this gene in regulating plant responses to individual drought, heat, and combined stresses (drought + heat) in tomato. Compared to the wild-type (WT), SlHK2 RNAi plants exhibited fewer stress symptoms in response to individual and combined stress treatments. The enhanced abiotic stress tolerance of SlHK2 RNAi plants can be associated with increased membrane stability, osmoprotectant accumulation, and antioxidant enzyme activities. Furthermore, photosynthesis machinery was also protected in SlHK2 RNAi plants. Collectively, our results show that down-regulation of the cytokinin receptor gene SlHK2, and consequently cytokinin signaling, can improve plant tolerance to drought, heat, and combined stress.

RESUMEN

Environmental variations caused by global climate change significantly affect plant yield and productivity. Because water scarcity is one of the most significant risks to agriculture's future, improving the performance of plants to cope with water stress is critical. Our research scrutinized the impact of melatonin application on the photosynthetic machinery, photosynthetic physiology, root system, osmoprotectant accumulation, and oxidative stress in tomato plants during drought. The results showed that melatonin-treated tomato plants had remarkably higher water levels, gas exchange activities, root system morphological parameters (average diameter, root activity, root forks, projected area, root crossings, root volume, root surface area, root length, root tips, and root numbers), osmoprotectant (proline, trehalose, fructose, sucrose, and GB) accumulation, and transcript levels of the photosynthetic genes SlPsb28, SlPetF, SlPsbP, SlPsbQ, SlPetE, and SlPsbW. In addition, melatonin effectively maintained the plants' photosynthetic physiology. Moreover, melatonin treatment maintained the soluble protein content and antioxidant capacity during drought. Melatonin application also resulted in membrane stability, evidenced by less electrolyte leakage and lower H2O2, MDA, and O2- levels in the drought-stress environment. Additionally, melatonin application enhanced the antioxidant defense enzymes and antioxidant-stress-resistance-related gene (SlCAT1, SlAPX, SlGR, SlDHAR, SlPOD, and SOD) transcript levels in plants. These outcomes imply that the impacts of melatonin treatment on improving drought resistance could be ascribed to the mitigation of photosynthetic function inhibition, the enhancement of the water status, and the alleviation of oxidative stress in tomato plants. Our study findings reveal new and incredible aspects of the response of melatonin-treated tomato plants to drought stress and provide a list of candidate targets for increasing plant tolerance to the drought-stress environment.

RESUMEN

Crops are susceptible to a variety of stresses and amongst them salinity of soil is a global agronomic challenge that has a detrimental influence on crop yields, thus posing a severe danger to our food security. Therefore, it becomes imperative to examine how plants respond to salt stress, develop a tolerance that allows them to live through higher salt concentrations and choose species that can endure salt stress. From the perspective of food, security millets can be substituted to avoid hardships because of their efficiency in dealing with salt stress. Besides, this problem can also be tackled by using beneficial exogenous elements. Selenium (Se) which exists as selenate or selenite is one such cardinal element that has been reported to alleviate salt stress. The present study aimed for identification of selenate and selenite transporters in proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.), their expression under NaCl (salt stress) and Na2SeO3 (sodium selenite)treatments. This study identified eight transporters (RLM65282.1, RLN42222.1, RLN18407.1, RLM74477.1, RLN41904.1, RLN17428.1, RLN17268.1, RLM65753.1) that have a potential role in Se uptake in proso millet. We analyzed physicochemical properties, conserved structures, sub-cellular locations, chromosome location, molecular phylogenetic analysis, promoter regions prediction, protein-protein interactions, three-dimensional structure modeling and evaluation of these transporters. The analysis revealed the chromosome location and the number of amino acids present in these transporters as RLM65282.1 (16/646); RLN42222.1 (1/543); RLN18407.1 (2/483); RLM74477.1 (15/474); RLN41904.1 (1/521); RLN17428.1 (2/522); RLN17268.1(2/537);RLM65753.1 (16/539). The sub-cellular locations revealed that all the selenite transporters are located in plasma membrane whereas among selenate transporters RLM65282.1 and RLM74477.1 are located in mitochondria and RLN42222.1 and RLN18407.1 in chloroplast. The transcriptomic studies revealed that NaCl stress decreased the expression of both selenate and selenite transporters in proso millet and the applications of exogenous 1µM Se (Na2SeO3) increased the expression of these Se transporter genes. It was also revealed that selenate shows similar behavior as sulfate, while selenite transport resembles phosphate. Thus, it can be concluded that phosphate and sulphate transporters in millets are responsible for Se uptake.

RESUMEN

Plants being sessile are always exposed to various environmental stresses, and to overcome these stresses, modifications at the epigenetic level can prove vital for their long-term survival. Epigenomics refers to the large-scale study of epigenetic marks on the genome, which include covalent modifications of histone tails (acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation, ubiquitination, and the small RNA machinery). Studies based on epigenetics have evolved over the years especially in understanding the mechanisms at transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels in plants against various environmental stimuli. Epigenomic changes in plants through induced methylation of specific genes that lead to changes in their expression can help to overcome various stress conditions. Recent studies suggested that epigenomics has a significant potential for crop improvement in plants. By the induction and modulation of various cellular processes like DNA methylation, histone modification, and biogenesis of noncoding RNAs, the plant genome can be activated which can help in achieving a quicker response against various plant stresses. Epigenetic modifications in plants allow them to adjust under varied environmental stresses by modulating their phenotypic plasticity and at the same time ensure the quality and yield of crops. The plasticity of the epigenome helps to adapt the plants during pre- and postdevelopmental processes. The variation in DNA methylation in different organisms exhibits variable phenotypic responses. The epigenetic changes also occur sequentially in the genome. Various studies indicated that environmentally stimulated epimutations produce variable responses especially in differentially methylated regions (DMR) that play a major role in the management of stress conditions in plants. Besides, it has been observed that environmental stresses cause specific changes in the epigenome that are closely associated with phenotypic modifications. However, the relationship between epigenetic modifications and phenotypic plasticity is still debatable. In this review, we will be discussing the role of various factors that allow epigenetic changes to modulate phenotypic plasticity against various abiotic stress in plants.

RESUMEN

Fast ionic conduction at low operating temperatures is a key factor for the high electrochemical performance of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Here an A-site deficient semiconductor electrolyte Sr1-x Co x FeO3-δ is proposed for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). A fuel cell with a structure of Ni/NCAL-Sr0.7Co0.3FeO3-δ -NCAL/Ni reached a promising performance of 771 mW cm-2 at 550 °C. Moreover, appropriate doping of cobalt at the A-site resulted in enhanced charge carrier transportation yielding an ionic conductivity of >0.1 S cm-1 at 550 °C. A high OCV of 1.05 V confirmed that neither short-circuiting nor power loss occurred during the operation of the prepared SOFC device. A modified composition of Sr0.5Co0.5FeO3-δ and Sr0.3Co0.7FeO3-δ also reached good fuel cell performance of 542 and 345 mW cm-2, respectively. The energy bandgap analysis confirmed optimal cobalt doping into the A-site of the prepared perovskite structure improved the charge transportation effect. Moreover, XPS spectra showed how the Co-doping into the A-site enhanced O-vacancies, which improve the transport of oxide ions. The present work shows that Sr0.7Co0.3FeO3-δ is a promising electrolyte for LT-SOFCs. Its performance can be boosted with Co-doping to tune the energy band structure.

RESUMEN

Achieving fast ionic conductivity in the electrolyte at low operating temperatures while maintaining the stable and high electrochemical performance of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is challenging. Herein, we propose a new type of electrolyte based on perovskite Sr0.5Pr0.5Fe0.4Ti0.6O3-δ for low-temperature SOFCs. The ionic conducting behavior of the electrolyte is modulated using Mg doping, and three different Sr0.5Pr0.5Fe0.4-xMgxTi0.6O3-δ (x = 0, 0.1, and 0.2) samples are prepared. The synthesized Sr0.5Pr0.5Fe0.2Mg0.2Ti0.6O3-δ (SPFMg0.2T) proved to be an optimal electrolyte material, exhibiting a high ionic conductivity of 0.133 S cm-1 along with an attractive fuel cell performance of 0.83 W cm-2 at 520 °C. We proved that a proper amount of Mg doping (20%) contributes to the creation of an adequate number of oxygen vacancies, which facilitates the fast transport of the oxide ions. Considering its rapid oxide ion transport, the prepared SPFMg0.2T presented heterostructure characteristics in the form of an insulating core and superionic conduction via surface layers. In addition, the effect of Mg doping is intensively investigated to tune the band structure for the transport of charged species. Meanwhile, the concept of energy band alignment is employed to interpret the working principle of the proposed electrolyte. Moreover, the density functional theory is utilized to determine the perovskite structures of SrTiO3-δ and Sr0.5Pr0.5Fe0.4-xMgxTi0.6O3-δ (x = 0, 0.1, and 0.2) and their electronic states. Further, the SPFMg0.2T with 20% Mg doping exhibited low dissociation energy, which ensures the fast and high ionic conduction in the electrolyte. Inclusively, Sr0.5Pr0.5Fe0.4Ti0.6O3-δ is a promising electrolyte for SOFCs, and its performance can be efficiently boosted via Mg doping to modulate the energy band structure.

RESUMEN

Water scarcity has emerged as an intense global threat to humanity and needs prompt attention from the scientific community. Solar-driven interfacial evaporation and seawater desalination are promising strategies to resolve the primitive water shortage issue using renewable resources. However, the fragile solar thermal devices, complex fabricating techniques, and high cost greatly hinder extensive solar energy utilization in remote locations. Herein, we report the facile fabrication of a cost-effective solar-driven interfacial evaporator and seawater desalination system composed of carbon cloth (CC)-wrapped polyurethane foam (CC@PU). The developed solar evaporator had outstanding photo-thermal conversion efficiency (90%) with a high evaporation rate (1.71 kg m-2 h-1). The interfacial layer of black CC induced multiple incident rays on the surface allowing the excellent solar absorption (92%) and intensifying heat localization (67.37 °C) under 1 kW m-2 with spatially defined hydrophilicity to facilitate the easy vapor escape and validate the efficacious evaporation structure using extensive solar energy exploitation for practical application. More importantly, the long-term evaporation experiments with minimum discrepancy under seawater conditions endowed excellent mass change (15.24 kg m-2 in consecutive 8 h under 1 kW m-2 solar irradiations) and promoted its operational sustainability for multi-media rejection and self-dissolving potential (3.5 g NaCl rejected from CC@PU surface in 210 min). Hence, the low-cost and facile fabrication of CC@PU-based interfacial evaporation structure showcases the potential for enhanced solar-driven interfacial heat accumulation for freshwater production with simultaneous salt rejection.
