A macroporous graphene thin films coated on ITO substrates (MGTFs@ITO) have been developed as electrodes for the electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions. The MGTF@ITO electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. The results demonstrated that the MGTF@ITO has a high specific area with robust macroporous framework and a hydrophilic surface. The cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy using MGTFs@ITO as electrochemical electrodes indicated enhanced currents at the redox peaks, enlarged electrochemical surface area and a decreased charge transfer resistance. Based on these outstanding properties, the MGTF@ITO electrodes exhibited excellent stripping performace for the analysis of Ag(I) with a detection limit of 0.005 µg L-1. The high sensitivity of the MGTF@ITO electrodes can be ascribed to the well defined macroporous framework, high electrical conductivity, high specific area and good wettability. The MGTF@ITO electrodes were further demonstrated applicable to the simultaneous determination of Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II) and Ag(I) ions with outstanding sensing performance.

Background Growth factors from platelets have been emerging as a revolutionary treatment with the ability to induce cell growth in the skin, which results in retarding and reversing the aging process. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) allows for greater release of growth factors and biologically active proteins, which in turn activates the cascade of stimulation of neoangiogenesis and collagen production. PRP is used in anti-aging and facial skin rejuvenation in the form of dermal injections and topical application during micro-needling. This study was conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of a topically applied face serum, MYOWNN™ (Wockhardt Ltd., Mumbai, India). MYOWNN™ is an autologous growth factor concentrate that has been made into a topical face serum. Methods Male and female subjects in the age group between 30 and 55 years (both inclusive) with Fitzpatrick skin type III-V who had not taken any oral or topical treatments for at least four weeks before and any platelet-rich plasma (PRP) based facial treatment (injections) at least six months before the study entry were included. MYOWNN™ serum was applied on the face once daily at night, approximately 30 minutes before sleeping preferably, for a total duration of five months. Six parameters, i.e. spots, pores, wrinkles, texture, moisture, and pigmentation, were evaluated at regular intervals with Visage-LS (dermaindia®, Tamil Nadu, India), a face analysis system that gives the live status of these six parameters and is an advanced live status skin detection equipment together with shooting, analyzing, and displaying functions, as well as the subjective analysis, was performed by subjects and physicians using different globally accepted scales like physician's global aesthetic improvement scale (PGAIS), subject's global aesthetic improvement scale (SGAIS), subject satisfaction score (SSS), and wrinkle severity rating scale (WSRS). For analysis, a mixed model for repeated measures was used. The model had change from baseline as the dependent variable visit as a factor and baseline assessment result as a covariate. All primary and secondary efficacy endpoints were analyzed using Modified Intent-to-Treat (mITT) populations. Results Improvement in an average of six anti-aging parameters was observed as early as three months while statistically significant improvement was observed by the end of five months of application. A statistically significant improvement in wrinkles was observed by the end of three months of the application itself. There were no product-related adverse events reported. Conclusions Five months of application of MYOWNN™ serum showed a statistically significant improvement in an average of six parameters of anti-aging and face rejuvenation with a p-value of 0.0150 (<5% level of significance (i.e. 0.05) and was also well-tolerated.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is known as degenerative arthritis and is the second most common rheumatologic problem with a prevalence of 22%-39% in India. Knee OA (KOA) is a major cause of mobility impairment, particularly among females. Non-surgical treatment options for KOA include intra-articular injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and hyaluronic acid (HA). Most commercially available PRP preparation kits do not remove RBCs and WBCs which are detrimental to the healing effects. Wockhardt Regenerative Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, India has developed a kit known as Ossinext™ which has an advantage over traditional PRP in that it eliminates RBCs and WBCs. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of intra-articular injection of Wockhardt's Ossinext™ an autologous growth factor concentrate (AGFC) versus HA in KOA. METHODS:  Male and female patients in the age group between 30 and 75 years with confirmed KOA on radiological assessment with Grades I-III on the Kellgren-Lawrence Grading Scale and with visual analog scale (VAS) pain score of 4 or more (on the numeric rating scale) in spite of taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) since past 2 weeks were considered for study participation. This was an open-labeled study and eligible patients were randomly allocated to AGFC or HA in a 1:1 fashion. Three intra-articular injections were given in the affected knee joint, i.e. at baseline, month 1, and month 2 visits. Patients were evaluated at regular intervals, i.e. at months 5, 8, and 11 for primary and secondary endpoints. The primary efficacy endpoint for this study was change from baseline in WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index) scores at month 11 whereas the secondary efficacy endpoints were change from baseline of VAS pain scale at months 1, 2, 5, 8, and 11 as well as change from baseline of WOMAC, KOOS (Knee and Osteoarthritis Outcome System), and IKDC (International Knee Documentation Committee) scale at month 5, 8, and 11. For analysis a mixed model for repeated measures was used. RESULTS:  Out of the 100 patients who were enrolled, 50 patients each were randomized to AGFC and HA arm. The results were analyzed from 99 patients (49 for AGFC and 50 for HA) who met the criteria for the modified intent to treat (mITT) population. At month 11 on the WOMAC scale, there was greater improvement seen with Ossinext™ compared to HA group which was also statistically significant with p-value of 0.0332. Within the group, there was statistically significant improvement before and after treatment in all scales, i.e. WOMAC, KOOS, IKDC, and VAS at all time points, i.e. months 5, 8, and 11 with a p-value as low as <0.0001. Within the group, the VAS score showed statistically significant improvement even at months 1 and 2 as well. A total of 24 patients reported 37 adverse events (AEs) during the study, most common being pain, pyrexia and swelling but none of the AEs reported during the study were considered as severe in intensity. There were no safety concerns reported. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, greater and statistically significant improvement was seen with Ossinext™ in WOMAC scores at month 11 compared to HA. Ossinext™ also showed marked statistically significant improvement from before treatment to after treatment in the WOMAC, KOOS, IKDC, and VAS scales used for the assessment of KOA with a p-value as low as <0.0001. Ossinext™ was also safe and well-tolerated.

Fabrication of hybridized structures is an effective strategy to promote the performances of graphene-based composites for energy storage/conversion applications. In this work, macroporous structured graphene thin films (MGTFs) are fabricated on various substrates including flexible graphene papers (GPs) through an ice-crystal-induced phase separation process. The MGTFs prepared on GPs (MGTF@GPs) are recognized with remarkable features such as interconnected macroporous configuration, sufficient exfoliation of the conductive RGO sheets, and good mechanical flexibility. As such, the flexible MGTF@GPs are demonstrated as a versatile conductive platform for depositing conducting polymers (CPs), e.g., polyaniline (PAn), polypyrrole, and polythiophene, through in situ electropolymerization. The contents of the CPs in the composite films are readily controlled by varying the electropolymerization time. Notably, electrodeposition of PAn leads to the formation of nanostructures of PAn nanofibers on the walls of the macroporous structured RGO framework (PAn@MGTF@GPs): thereafter, the PAn@MGTF@GPs display a unique structural feature that combine the nanostructures of PAn nanofibers and the macroporous structures of RGO sheets. Being used as binder-free electrodes for flexible supercapacitors, the PAn@MGTF@GPs exhibit excellent electrochemical performance, in particular a high areal specific capacity (538 mF cm(-2)), high cycling stability, and remarkable capacitive stability to deformation, due to the unique electrode structures.

The morphologies of transition metal oxides have decisive impact on the performance of their applications. Here, we report a new and facile strategy for in situ preparation of anatase TiO2 nanospindles in three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide (RGO) structure (3D TiO2@RGO) using cellulose as both an intermediate agent eliminating the negative effect of graphene oxide (GO) on the growth of TiO2 crystals and as a structure-directing agent for the shape-controlled synthesis of TiO2 crystals. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometer analysis indicated that the spindle shape of TiO2 crystals was formed through the restriction of the growth of high energy {010} facets due to preferential adsorption of cellulose on these facets. Because of the 3D structure of the composite, the large aspect ratio of the TiO2 nanospindles, and the exposed high-energy {010} facets of the TiO2 crystals, the 3D TiO2@RGO(Ce 1.7) exhibited excellent capacitive performance as an electrode material for supercapacitors, with a high specific capacitance (ca. 397 F g(-1)), a high energy density (55.7 Wh kg(-1)), and a high power density (1327 W kg(-1)) on the basis of the masses of RGO and TiO2. These levels of capacitive performance far exceed those of previously reported TiO2-based composites.

This study, carried out during the second half of 1995, investigated the predisposing factors leading to marital disruption and its consequences on the lives of women in Matlab, a rural area of Bangladesh. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. Data were generated from detailed case studies and quantitative surveys of a small number of maritally-disrupted women. Additional data were used from the ongoing demographic surveillance system of ICDDR,B: Centre for Health and Population Research. The findings revealed that divorced and abandoned women and their children were extremely vulnerable, both socially and economically. Various factors that influence marital disruption were identified, the most important ones being: aspects determining the process of marriage, various family problems due to non-fulfillment of demand for dowry, mutual distrust, extramarital relationships, quality of sexual life, education of women, and other behavioural characteristics of individuals. Level of education of the wife showed an inverse relationship with the risk of divorce. Women who did not have livebirths from their first pregnancy had a higher risk of divorce. The effect of pregnancy outcome was dependent on the level of education of women. Illiterate women with unsuccessful pregnancy outcomes were at the highest risk of being divorced, with the lowest risk for women with some education and a livebirth. The findings clearly indicate the need for broad-based social development programmes for women, especially to enhance their education to reduce their vulnerability to marital instability and its consequences.

Diarrhea, a descriptive term used in medical science for a variety of clinical diseases, denotes an illness that is categorized differently and known by numerous terms in various cultures. These diversified classifications and terminologies are based on the symptoms of diarrheal disorders, their perceived etiology, and their treatment. In Bangladesh, four types of illnesses with names derived from folk terminology have been identified for which the clinical symptoms resemble those of diarrhea. These include dud haga, which is due to ingestion of breast milk by infants; ajirno, which is due to overeating; amasha, a mucoid diarrhea; and daeria, which is severe watery diarrhea or cholera. Use of the word diarrhea in epidemiologic evaluations was discovered to be problematic; people confused this term with daeria, which accounted for only 5% of all episodes of diarrhea. The implications of such epidemiologic information for a large-scale program of oral rehydration therapy are also discussed.
