RESUMEN

105Rhodium(III) complexes with three different acyclic tetrathioether ligands containing pendant carboxylic acid groups have been synthesized and characterized. The complexes were evaluated for stability under physiological conditions and the most promising complexes were evaluated in vivo in normal mice. The primary route of clearance for these complexes was the renal/urinary system, consistent with the presence of pendant carboxylate groups. The results indicate that the cis-[Rh(III)Cl2(2,5,8,11-tetrathiadodecane-1,12-dicarboxylic acid)]+ complex shows the most promising in vivo characteristics on which to base a potential therapeutic radiopharmaceutical.

RESUMEN

A young man from Sri Lanka developed a suppurative chronic wound on the right foot after a minor trauma. In spite of several surgical interventions a closure of the ulcer did not occur. Only six months later after serious miliary tuberculosis had developed the correct diagnosis was established and tuberculostatic therapy initiated. This manifestation of tuberculosis--rare in recent times--is reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the causal relation between trauma and reactivation of tuberculosis as well as the pathogenesis of secondary miliary tuberculosis.

RESUMEN

Alterations of pulmonary parenchyma are complications of ankylosing spondylitis. A 60-year-old man presented with extended fibrocystic changes in the right upper pulmonary lobe in the course of ankylosing spondylitis of many years duration. Pneumonia refractory to treatment and hemoptysis developed as complications necessitating pneumonectomy.

RESUMEN

Hypermobility of joints and spine is a consequence of abnormal laxity of ligaments, joint capsules and intervertebral discs. Hypermobility per se is a state, not a disease. However, it may lead to generalized arthralgia or localized symptoms (frequent ankle sprains, knee effusions, dislocations of the shoulders of recurrent episodes of back pain). These events may occur even after minor strains. Young women are preferentially affected. The term "hypermobility syndrome" is defined as a combination of hypermobility with arthralgia, low back pain, frequent dislocation or sprains. It is often the result of a hereditary disorder of connective tissue. Individuals with hypermobility are at increased risk for premature osteoarthrosis or polytopic disc degeneration of the spine. However, the vast majority of hyperlax individuals are free of symptoms. Those with symptoms who do not develop osteoarthrosis or disc degeneration usually experience spontaneous improvement with increasing age, thus losing their juvenile hyperlaxity. This usually occurs between the ages of thirty and forty. The present review article also provides guidelines for management and patient information.
