RESUMEN

Desorption performance of ligands from silver nanoparticles extremely affects a sintering process of nanoinks for their writing fine pattern. In this study, we investigated desorption behaviors of ligands on the surface of silver nanoparticle through ligand exchange and subsequent washing process with antisolvent. Ligand exchange reactions from oleic acid to tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO), octanoic acid (OA), and 1-dodecanethiol (DDT) were carried out on the surface of silver nanoparticle. After the washing process with methanol as an antisolvent, their crystallite sizes and the amounts of ligands existing on the particle surface were evaluated by powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. In the case of ligand exchange with TOPO, the crystallite size dramatically increased and the amount of ligands existing on the particle surface significantly decreased. This result shows that TOPO is easy to desorb from the silver surface in the washing process with methanol, which resulted in the efficient coalescence of silver. In contrast, the coalescence of silver nanoparticles capped with OA and DDT was less efficient. Moreover, the effect of the antisolvent in the washing process on the coalescence of silver was demonstrated in detail.

RESUMEN

Porous metal structures are very useful for heterogeneous catalysts in organic syntheses. This study reports a novel method to fabricate porous Pd structures by room-temperature (RT) coalescence of Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs). First, oleylamine-capped Pd NPs were synthesized, and then Pd NP pastes were fabricated by mixing with tri-n-octylphosphine oxide as a sacrificial template. Finally, the Pd NP paste was dipped into methanol containing a sintering agent. When KOH was used as the sintering agent, porous Pd structures could be successfully obtained at RT. The catalytic activities of porous Pd structures were investigated in the Suzuki coupling reaction and they increased with the increase of the KOH concentration in the sintering process. These results indicate that pre-activation of porous Pd structures by KOH increased the catalytic activities.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hip-to-calcaneus (HC) view is a whole-leg standing view that can visualize the hindfoot in detail. The aim of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of tibiocalcaneal angle in HC view (H-TCA) by comparing it with that in long axial view (L-TCA). We also verified whether periarticular knee alignment parameters, measured conventionally in whole-leg standing radiography, could be measured in HC view. METHOD: Sixty healthy volunteers and 61 patients with medial knee osteoarthritis were included. H-TCA was measured by two examiners in the healthy group, and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) were evaluated. H-TCA and L-TCA were then measured in the healthy and osteoarthritis groups and correlated. Finally, we measured hip-knee-ankle angle, mechanical axis deviation ratio, mechanical lateral distal femoral angle, medial proximal tibial angle, and joint-line convergence angle in HC view and conventional whole-leg standing radiography to evaluate statistical differences and correlations. RESULTS: The intra-observer and inter-observer ICCs were 0.86 and 0.76, respectively. Correlation coefficients (r) between H-TCA and L-TCA were r = 0.87 in healthy group and r = 0.81 in osteoarthritis group, indicating a strong positive correlation in both groups. There was no significant difference in periarticular knee alignment parameters between HC view and conventional whole-leg radiography. CONCLUSIONS: Hindfoot evaluation in HC view showed high intra-observer and inter-observer reliabilities and strong positive correlation with TCA in long axial view. By using HC view before knee surgery, such as total knee arthroplasty, other necessary alignments can be evaluated simultaneously.

RESUMEN

This study reports a novel method for the synthesis of silica nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulating near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent dyes through physical adsorption. Although a NIR cationic fluorescent dye, oxazine 725 (OXA), has no chemical bonding moiety toward silica NPs such as the triethoxysilyl group, the dyes were successfully incorporated into silica NPs without denaturation under the mild reaction conditions. Next, tannic acid (TA) molecules were coated in the presence of Fe3+ on the particle surface for the functionalization of silica NPs encapsulating OXA (OXA@SiO2 NPs). The TA coating on the surface of OXA@SiO2 NPs was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The TA coating significantly contributed to the resistance improvement against photobleaching and leakage of the dyes in the NPs. Furthermore, the obtained TA-coated silica NPs encapsulating OXAs (OXA@SiO2@TA NPs) were used for the fluorescence imaging of African green monkey kidney (COS-7) cells, and it was shown that the fluorescence originated from OXA@SiO2@TA NPs was clearly observed in the COS-7 cells.

RESUMEN

Gouty tophi occur less frequently and disappear only with modern medication therapy for symptomatic or asymptomatic hyperuricaemia. However, the medication may require a long time to take effect due to the systemic urate pool associated with massive gouty tophi. We present the case of a 37-year-old woman who suffered from massive gouty tophi of both feet due to hyperuricaemia. After resection of the massive gouty tophi from her right foot and treatment with uricemia medication, the gouty tophi of her opposite foot disappeared rapidly due to reducing the patient's systemic urate pool with intensification of drug medication.

RESUMEN

Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans produced in glial scar tissue are a major inhibitory factor for axonal regeneration after central nervous system injury in mammals. The inhibition is largely due to chondroitin sulfates, whose effects differ according to the sulfation pattern. In contrast to mammals, fish nerves spontaneously regenerate beyond the scar tissue after spinal cord injury, although the mechanisms that allow for axons to pass through the scar are unclear. Here, we used immunohistochemistry to examine the expression of two chondroitin sulfates with different sulfation variants at the lesion site in goldfish spinal cord. The intact spinal cord was immunoreactive for both chondroitin sulfate-A (CS-A) and chondroitin sulfate-C (CS-C), and CS-A immunoreactivity overlapped extensively with glial processes positive for glial fibrillary acidic protein. At 1week after inducing the spinal lesion, CS-A immunoreactivity was observed in the cell bodies and extracellular matrix, as well as in glial processes surrounding the lesion center. At 2weeks after the spinal lesion, regenerating axons entering the lesion center overtook the CS-A abundant area. In contrast, at 1week after lesion induction, CS-C immunoreactivity was significantly decreased, and at 2weeks after lesion induction, CS-C immunoreactivity was observed along the regenerating axons entering the lesion center. The present findings suggest that after spinal cord injury in goldfish, chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans are deposited in the extracellular matrix at the lesion site but do not form an impenetrable barrier to the growth of regenerating axons.
