BACKGROUND: The purpose of this article is to summarize the opinions of the surgical oncology leaders from the Global Forum of Cancer Surgeons (GFCS) about the global impact of COVID-19 pandemic on cancer surgery. METHODS: A panel session (virtual) was held at the annual Society of Surgical Oncology 2021 International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care to address the impact of COVID-19 on cancer surgery globally. Following the virtual meeting, a questionnaire was sent to all the leaders to gather additional opinions. The input obtained from all the leaders was collated and analyzed to understand how cancer surgeons from across the world adapted in real-time to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS: The surgical oncology leaders noted that the COVID-19 pandemic led to severe disruptions in surgical cancer care across all domains of clinical care, education, and research. Several new changes/protocols associated with increased costs were implemented to deliver safe care. Leaders also noted that preexisting disparities in care were exacerbated, and the pandemic had a detrimental effect on well-being and financial status. CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to severe disruptions in surgical cancer care globally. Leaders of the GFCS opined that new strategies need to be implemented to prepare for any future catastrophic events based on the lessons learned from the current events. The GFCS will embark on developing such a roadmap to ensure that surgical cancer care is preserved in the future regardless of any catastrophic global events.

This study analyzes the lipid composition and the oxidative stability of oils of Sapindaceae and Meliaceae seeds. The oil content ranged from 14.7% (Guarea guidonia) to 30.1% (Allophylus puberulus and Paullinia elegans). Ten fatty acids were identified in seed oils. Guarea guidonia seeds accumulated mainly oleic (44.9%) and linoleic (24.1%) acid, whereas the unusual gondoic and paullinic acids were identified in A. puberulus (15.8%; 8.9%) and P. elegans (14.4%; 44.2%), respectively. The oil of P. elegans had the highest oxidative stability (16.2 h.). Tocopherol predominated in A. puberulus (10.4 mg/100 g) and tocotrienol predominated in G. guidonea and P. elegans (2.6 mg/100 g). The vitamers α-tocopherol, γ-tocopherol, and γ-tocotrienol were found in the studied oils. ß-carotene was predominantly detected in the oil of A. puberulus seeds (22.4 µg/g). Guarea guidonia seed oil has a high potential in food due to richness in essential fatty acids. In turn, A. puberulus and P. elegans oils could be suggested for other industrial purposes (e.g., biodiesel, varnishes, paints, soaps, or oleochemicals) due to their content of long-chain fatty acids.

Interest in astroglial cells is rising due to recent findings supporting dynamic neuron-astrocyte interactions. There is increasing evidence of astrocytic dysfunction in several brain disorders such as depression, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder; importantly these pathologies are characterized by the involvement of the prefrontal cortex and by significant cognitive impairments. Here, to model astrocyte pathology, we injected animals with the astrocyte specific toxin L-α-aminoadipate (L-AA) in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC); a behavioral and structural characterization two and six days after the injection was performed. Behavioral data shows that the astrocyte pathology in the mPFC affects the attentional set-shifting, the working memory and the reversal learning functions. Histological analysis of brain sections of the L-AA-injected animals revealed a pronounced loss of astrocytes in the targeted region. Interestingly, analysis of neurons in the lesion sites showed a progressive neuronal loss that was accompanied with dendritic atrophy in the surviving neurons. These results suggest that the L-AA-induced astrocytic loss in the mPFC triggers subsequent neuronal damage leading to cognitive impairment in tasks depending on the integrity of this brain region. These findings are of relevance to better understand the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying disorders that involve astrocytic loss/dysfunction in the PFC.

This study aimed to analyze laboratory and field data to assess the ecotoxicological risks of calcium nitrate exposure to freshwater tropical biota. Short-term laboratorial tests resulted in estimated EC50 values of 76.72 (67.32-86.12)mg N-NO3₋ L(-1) for C. silvestrii and 296.46 (277.16-315.76) mg N-NO3₋ L(-1) for C. xanthus. Long-term laboratorial tests generated IC25 values of 5.05 (4.35-5.75) and 28.73 (26.30-31.15) mg N-NO3₋ L(-1) for C. silvestrii and C. xanthus, respectively. The results from in situ mesocosm experiments performed in the Ibirité reservoir (a tropical eutrophic urban water body located in SE Brazil) indicated that C. silvestrii and C. xanthus were not under severe deleterious acute impact due to the treatment because the higher nitrate concentrations determined were 5.2 mg N-NO3₋ L(-1) (t=24 h; sediment-water interface) and 17.5 mg N-NO3₋ L(-1) (t=600 h; interstitial water). However, an abrupt decrease in the densities of Cyanophyceae members and other benthic taxa was observed. In summary, the present work contributes greatly to the toxicity data linked to two taxonomically distinct organisms that have never been screened for calcium nitrate sensitivity. Furthermore, considering the problem of the management and restoration of eutrophic environments, our study reports a comprehensive field assessment that allows the elucidation of the possible toxic impacts caused by the addition of calcium nitrate (a remediation technique) on aquatic and benthic organisms as well as the implications on the aquatic ecosystem as a whole, which may greatly allow expanding the current knowledgebase on the topic.

This study evaluated the effects of 2 different types of acute aerobic exercise on the osmotic stability of human erythrocyte membrane and on different hematological and biochemical variables that are associated with this membrane property. The study population consisted of 20 healthy and active men. Participants performed single sessions of 2 types of exercise. The first session consisted of 60 min of moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE). The second session, executed a week later, consisted of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) until exhaustion. The osmotic stability of the erythrocyte membrane was represented by the inverse of the salt concentration (1/H50) at the midpoint of the sigmoidal curve of dependence between the absorbance of hemoglobin and the NaCl concentration. The values of 1/H50 changed from 2.29±0.1 to 2.33±0.09 after MICE and from 2.30±0.08 to 2.23±0.12 after HIIE. During MICE mean corpuscular volume increased, probably due to in vivo lysis of older erythrocytes, with preservation of cells that were larger and more resistant to in vitro lysis. The study showed that a single bout of acute exercise affected erythrocyte stability, which increased after MICE and decreased after HIIE.

The acidity of a solution is associated with the concentration of Brønsted acids. This work proposes a new non-titrimetric potentiometric method using citrate buffer for the determination of vinegar acidity. The difference between the pH values before and after the addition of a diluted vinegar sample to 10 mmol L-1 citrate buffer (pH 5.5) was related to the acetic acid concentration. The dynamic range of the quadratic analytical curve was from 3.5 to 20 mmol L-1 (R2 = 0.998). The repeatability was 0.8% for acetic acid at 0.01 mol L-1. Comparison with the conventional titration method showed an error between 0.7% and 4.64% (n = 9) for analysis of commercial vinegar samples The behaviour of the system could be explained using the buffering function.

Olive trees have been grown since the beginning of civilization, and the consumption of olives and olive products is increasing worldwide, due to their health benefits and organoleptic qualities. To meet the growing market for olives, commercial cultivation of this species is expanding from traditional areas to new regions. Although the Brazilian olive industry has just begun to be established, breeding programs are already developing cultivars that are more adapted to local conditions. We used 12 microsatellite markers to evaluate 60 olive accessions, including several cultivars that were developed in Brazil. The analyses identified 72 distinct alleles; the largest number of alleles per locus were at the markers GAPU 101 and GAPU 71B, which contained 10 and 9 alleles, respectively. The largest allelic diversity and polymorphic information contents were also found at the GAPU 101 and GAPU 71B markers, with values of 0.8399/0.8203 and 0.8117/0.7863, respectively. Additionally, the 12 microsatellite markers generated a cumulative identity probability of 1.51 x 10(-10), indicating a high level of accuracy of accession identification. The set of markers that we used allowed the identification of 52 of the 60 olive genotypes, in addition to the recognition of several varietal synonyms. The components of a two-dimensional principal coordinate analysis explained 48.6% of the total genetic variation. The results obtained from the microsatellite markers showed a substantial degree of genetic diversity in the olive tree accessions used in Brazil.

OBJECTIVES: To synthesise evidence on the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and barriers to responding to violence against women (VAW) in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services in low/middle-income countries (LMICs). DESIGN: Mixed-methods systematic review. DATA SOURCES: Medline, Embase, Psycinfo, Cochrane, Cinahl, IMEMR, Web of Science, Popline, Lilacs, WHO RHL, ClinicalTrials.gov, Google, Google Scholar, websites of key organisations through December 2019. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Studies of any design that evaluated VAW interventions in SRH services in LMICs. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Concurrent narrative quantitative and thematic qualitative syntheses, integration through line of argument and mapping onto a logic model. Two reviewers extracted data and appraised quality. RESULTS: 26 studies of varied interventions using heterogeneous outcomes. Of ten interventions that strengthened health systems capacity to respond to VAW during routine SRH consultation, three reported no harm and reduction in some types of violence. Of nine interventions that strengthened health systems and communities' capacity to respond to VAW, three reported conflicting effects on re-exposure to some types of VAW and mixed effect on SRH. The interventions increased identification of VAW but had no effect on the provision (75%-100%) and uptake (0.6%-53%) of referrals to VAW services. Of seven psychosocial interventions in addition to SRH consultation that strengthened women's readiness to address VAW, four reduced re-exposure to some types of VAW and improved health. Factors that disrupted the pathway to better outcomes included accepting attitudes towards VAW, fear of consequences and limited readiness of the society, health systems and individuals. No study evaluated cost-effectiveness. CONCLUSIONS: Some VAW interventions in SRH services reduced re-exposure to some types of VAW and improved some health outcomes in single studies. Future interventions should strengthen capacity to address VAW across health systems, communities and individual women. First-line support should be better tailored to women's needs and expectations. OBJECTIVE: Is there a relationship between enamel defects and early childhood caries? METHODS: A total of 275 children participated in a cohort study from birth to 54 months of age. Enamel defects were determined by the development defects enamel index and dental caries was registered according to the WHO criteria. Data were analyzed using descriptive, analytical techniques, multivariate analysis, and evidence-based tools as number needed to harm (NNH). RESULTS: In the follow up, 224 children were still in the study, 81.3% presented at least one tooth with enamel defect and 44.2% had dental caries. An association was found between enamel defects and dental caries (P = 0.0091). Multivariate analysis showed that night bottle-feeding, absence of fluoride and enamel defects were predictors of dental caries at 18 months (P < 0.05). Enamel defect was the only statistically significant variable to influence the development of caries at 24, 30, 36, and 42 months. At 48 months, the use of fluoride toothpaste had effect on the decrease of caries (P < 0.05). The NNH for enamel defects in relation to dental caries was 3.0, at 24 months and 5.0 at 54 months. CONCLUSION: Enamel defect is a predisposing factor for ECC.

Host plant selection by herbivores is driven by a complex array of cues, including leaf traits and previous leaf damage. Herbivore-associated cues to host selection at the plant and leaf scale aid understanding of mechanisms responsible for host preference that might translate into increased performance, as well as processes structuring herbivore populations mediated by interactions. We investigated how changes induced by a galling insect in the tropical fern Cyathea phalerata act as repellent or attractant cues for sawfly feeding and the effects of leaf size on herbivory levels. We recorded gall abundance, damage by chewers, leaf size, plant nutritional quality, phenolic concentration and leaf anatomical traits between galled and non-galled leaf samples. Galled samples contained less N, higher levels of phenolics and higher C/N ratio. However, leaf-chewing damage did not differ between galled and non-galled leaves. The gall structure was avoided by chewers, as it had high concentrations of phenolics, lignification and suberization. Larger leaves sustained higher gall abundance, but leaf size did not have a significant effect on chewer damage. A co-occurrence index calculated for both guilds indicated that galls and chewers exhibited a distribution that did not differ from random, reinforcing that the two guilds on C. phalerata do not show patterns of repulsion such as those maintained by interspecific competition. Sawflies dismissing chemical cues indicate that the increase in phenolics caused by galling insects does not generate increased protection of the galled pinnules. Our results highlight ferns as key resources for herbivores and as a potential plant group to study new research avenues on plant-insect interactions.

Bone is a complex hierarchical material that can be characterized from the microscale to macroscale. This work demonstrates the application of an enhanced homogenization methodology to the multiscale structural analysis of a femoral bone. The use of this homogenization technique allows to remove subjectivity and reduce the computational cost associated with the iterative process of creating a heterogeneous mesh. Thus, it allows to create simpler homogenized meshes with its mechanical properties defined using information directly from the mesh source: the medical images. Therefore, this methodology is capable to accurately predict bone mechanical behavior in a fraction of the time required by classical approaches. The results show that using the homogenization technique, despite the differences between the used homogeneous and heterogeneous meshes, its mechanical behavior is similar. The proposed homogenization technique is useful for a multiscale modelling and it is computationally efficient.

Twenty-three hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria strains were isolated from gas station leaking-contaminated groundwater located in the Southern Amazon, Brazil. Based on hydrocarbon (diesel, hexadecane, benzene, toluene and xylene) degradation ability, two strains were selected for further study. The amplification and sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene showed that these two strains belonged to the genus Bacillus (Bacillus sp. L26 and Bacillus sp. L30). GC-MS analysis showed that strain L30 was the most effective in degrading n-alkane (C10-C27) from diesel after 7 days of cultivation in mineral medium. Both strains produced biosurfactants and showed emulsification activity, specially the strain L30. Alkane hydroxylase gene (group III), which is important for alkane biodegradation, was present in strains. As a result, this study indicated that these bacteria could have promising applications in hydrocarbon bioremediation.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to evaluate the prevalence of enamel defects in infants from a socially and economically poor population and the possible association of these defects with disturbances occurring in the pre-, peri- and postnatal periods of human development. PARTICIPANTS: 117 infants aged between 16 and 18 months old were included in four groups based on gestational age and whether part or full term pregnancy. METHOD: The data were collected in two stages: hospital-based, where gestational and birth records were examined, and home-based, where dental examinations and nutrition were evaluated. The teeth were cleaned and dried with gauze and examined in the open air, avoding direct sunlight in the knee-to-knee position. The enamel defects were coded according to the modified Developmental Defects of Enamel Index. Besides this, body weight and height were considered as anthropometric measures for the evaluation of nutritional status by the National Center for Health Statistics standards. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The data were analyzed using the chi-square and Fisher Exact tests. Besides these tests, logistic regression models were used. RESULTS: The prevalence of enamel defects was 49.6%, higher in the group of male infants (p<0.001). The most frequent type of defect and the most affected surface were, respectively, diffuse opacity (9.5%) and the buccal surface (83.3%), located in the gingival half (6.7%). The logistic regression model showed that educational level, gestational age and intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), besides a lack of breastfeeding, increased the probability of enamel defects up to level of 5%. CONCLUSIONS: The association between enamel defects and the etiologic factors shown in this study suggest the existence of social influences regarding oral health and teeth development.

The objective of the article was to assess methodologies published and applied in calculating mortality attributable to smoking. A review of the literature was made for the period 1990 to 2006, in the electronic databases MEDLINE and LILACS. A total of 186 studies were found, which measured mortality based on calculating the smoking-attributable risk. Of these, a total of 41 were selected. The studies that were carried out in the United States and Canada presented a more standard methodology and reported smoking attributable mortality to be 18%-23%, with male mortality being 25%-29% and female mortality 14%-17%. The variations can be attributed to methodological differences and to different estimates of the main tobacco-related illnesses.

BACKGROUND: Normal B lymphoid maturation occurs in bone marrow (BM) throughout life, but immature B-cell progenitors (BCPs) are more numerous in children than in adults. To assess the normal values according to age became important as BCPs are decreased in myelodysplastic syndromes and have been considered an important diagnostic and prognostic feature in these clonal disorders. METHODS: in a multicenter retrospective study from the Brazilian Group of Flow Cytometry we analyzed the variation of BCPs in normal BM according to age and technical peculiarities of each laboratory. We analysed of 45 BM donors and 89 cases examined for elucidation of transitory reactive cytopenias presenting a normal BM immunophenotyping. BCPs were enumerated as CD19+ /CD34+ /CD45dim /CD10+ cells (panel 1) or CD19+ /CD34+ /CD45dim cells (panel 2) among the total nucleated non-erythroid cells and as percentage of CD34+ cells. RESULTS: we included 134 cases. Panel 1 was applied in 88 cases and panel 2 was used in 46. Age range: 10 months to 89 years. In a multiple regression, % BCPs/total nucleated cells was an exponential function of age. Age explained alone 49.4% of the variance, while 'panel used' explained 1.8% and 'laboratory' explained 0.7%. Age explained only 24.9% of the variance of BCPs/CD34+ cells. CONCLUSIONS: in normal individuals, BM B-cell precursors varied mainly according to age, but were also dependent on technical peculiarities of operators and equipments. Analysis by phenotype and as percentage of total nucleated cells was more accurate and less susceptible to variation than evaluating % BCPs/total CD34+ cells. © 2017 International Clinical Cytometry Society.

A polymeric micro- and nanosphere formulation using poly (epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) to entrap an antituberculosis drug, isoniazid (INH), was developed and characterized. The microspheres were prepared by a solvent evaporation method using ethyl acetate, PCL and INH as the organic phase and water and Tween 40 as the aqueous phase. The nanospheres were prepared by a spontaneous emulsification solvent diffusion method using 40% ethanol in acetone (v/v), PCL and INH as the organic phase and water and Tween 40 as the aqueous phase. After freeze-drying, these systems were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size analysis, determination of entrapped INH content, in vitro INH release and brine shrimp toxicity bioassay.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Rhodococcus equi (Rhodococcus hoagii/Prescottella equi) is a common cause of foal pneumonia, but its diagnosis remains a challenge for equine veterinarians. While the VapA-specific (virulence-associated protein A) immunoglobulin G (IgG) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has low sensitivity and specificity for detecting pneumonic foals, little is known about VapA-specific IgG subclasses. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the performance of VapA-specific ELISA for IgG and its subclasses IgGa, IgGb and IgG(T) in the early diagnosis of pneumonia caused by R. equi. STUDY DESIGN: Assay validation followed by assessment of diagnostic performance using archived samples from animals of known status. METHODS: Serum samples from exposed (n = 125) and nonexposed adult horses (n = 10) and from experimentally challenged and naturally infected foals were used for ELISA validation. Post mortem and tissue culture records of the last 24 years from the Institute for Experimental Pathology at the University of Iceland in Keldur, Iceland laboratory were evaluated to confirm the absence of R. equi cases in Iceland. The diagnostic performance of VapA-specific IgG and its subclasses was evaluated using banked serum samples from pneumonic (n = 21) and healthy foals (n = 80). To evaluate each IgG assay, a cut-off value was selected based on receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and used to calculate sensitivity and specificity. The intra- and interassay coefficients of variation were calculated for each ELISA. RESULTS: Using sera from Iceland, where R. equi infection has not been reported, the VapA-specific IgG ELISA differentiated exposed from nonexposed horses. When used to identify infected foals, VapA-specific IgG, IgGa and IgGb had no diagnostic value. In contrast, IgG(T) had high sensitivity and specificity. CONCLUSIONS: Horses from Iceland are not exposed to VapA(+) R. equi and can serve as negative controls. VapA-specific IgG subclasses, with the exception of IgG(T), are poor predictors of disease. Further investigation on the use of IgG(T) as a diagnostic tool in field conditions is needed.

Abstract Twenty-three hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria strains were isolated from gas station leaking-contaminated groundwater located in the Southern Amazon, Brazil. Based on hydrocarbon (diesel, hexadecane, benzene, toluene and xylene) degradation ability, two strains were selected for further study. The amplification and sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene showed that these two strains belonged to the genus Bacillus (Bacillus sp. L26 and Bacillus sp. L30). GC-MS analysis showed that strain L30 was the most effective in degrading n-alkane (C10-C27) from diesel after 7 days of cultivation in mineral medium. Both strains produced biosurfactants and showed emulsification activity, specially the strain L30. Alkane hydroxylase gene (group III), which is important for alkane biodegradation, was present in strains. As a result, this study indicated that these bacteria could have promising applications in hydrocarbon bioremediation.


Resumo Vinte e três linhagens bacterianas degradadoras de hidrocarbonetos foram isoladas de água subterrânea contaminada por vazamento em posto de combustível no sul da Amazônia, Brasil. Com base na habilidade de degradar hidrocarbonetos (diesel, hexadecano, benzeno, tolueno e xileno), duas linhagens foram selecionadas para estudos posteriores. A amplificação e sequenciamento do gene 16S rRNA demonstrou que essas linhagens pertencem ao gênero Bacillus (Bacillus sp. L26 and Bacillus sp. L30). Análises de GC-MS mostraram que a linhagem L30 foi mais eficiente em degradar n-alcanos (C10-C27) presentes no diesel, após 7 dias de cultivo em meio mineral. Ambas as linhagens produziram biossurfactantes e apresentaram atividade emulsificante, especialmente a linhagem L30. O gene alcano hidroxilase (grupo III), o qual é importante para degradação de alcanos, foram detectados nas linhagens. Como resultado, este estudo indicou que essas linhagens bacterianas podem ser promissoras se aplicadas em processos de biorremediação.

The efficacy and tolerability of an infusion of isradipine, a calcium antagonist of the dihydropyridine type, were tested in patients in hypertensive crisis. Ten patients with symptomatic and significant elevations in blood pressure were infused for 12 h with isradipine at 1.2, 2.4, 4.8, and 7.2 micrograms/kg/h (3 h of each infusion level). No untoward effects or adverse reactions were noted. No alterations were observed on electrocardiographic tracings, and blood pressure was significantly reduced only at doses of 7.2 micrograms/kg/h. Thus, isradipine as an infusion is useful and safe for hypertensive crisis, starting at a rate of 7.2 micrograms/kg/h. Higher doses may yet prove to be safe, well tolerated, and even more efficacious.

A flow injection (FI) spectrophotometric procedure for determining reducing sugars content in sugar cane juices using a focalized PTFE coiled reactor positioned at the output antenna of a domestic microwave oven at 700 W is proposed. In this system, sample solution converge to 1.0 mol l(-1) NaOH and 5.2 mmol l(-1) K(3)Fe(CN)(6) solutions previously mixed and the decrease of hexacyanoferrate(III) concentration was monitored at 420 nm. Under best analytical conditions, there was a direct relationship between absorbance decrease and reducing sugar content (fructose plus glucose concentrations) in the concentration range from 50 to 1200 micromol l(-1) with a detection limit of 15 micromol l(-1). The relative standard deviations (rds) were less than 1.4% for ten injection of 400 and 800 micromol l(-1) fructose solution and the analytical frequency was 70 h(-1). A paired t-test showed that all results obtained for sugar cane juices using this FI procedure and the Somogyi-Nelson batch procedure agree at the 95% confidence level.
