BACKGROUND: Campylobacter spp. is the most frequent cause of bacterial food-borne gastroenteritis and a high priority antibiotic resistant bacterium according to the World Health Organization (WHO). European monitoring of thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. does not reflect the global burden of resistances already circulating within the bacterial population worldwide. METHODS: We systematically compared whole genome sequencing with comprehensive phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility, analyzing 494 thermotolerant Campylobacter poultry isolates from Vietnam and Germany. Any discrepancy was checked by repeating the wet lab and improving the dry lab part. Selected isolates were additionally analyzed via long-read Oxford Nanopore technology, leading to closed chromosomes and plasmids. RESULTS: Overall, 22 different resistance genes and gene variants (e. g. erm(B), aph(3')-IIIa, aph(2'')-If, catA, lnu(C), blaOXA, sat4) and point mutations in three distinct genes (gyrA, 23S rRNA, rpsL) associated with AMR were present in the Campylobacter isolates. Two AMR genes were missing in the database and one falsely associated with resistance. Bioinformatic analysis based on short-read data partly failed to identify tet(O) and aadE, when the genes were present as duplicate or homologous gene variants. Intriguingly, isolates also contained different determinants, redundantly conferring resistance to chloramphenicol, gentamicin, kanamycin, lincomycin and streptomycin. We found a novel tet(W) in tetracycline sensitive strains, harboring point mutations. Furthermore, analysis based on assemblies from short-read data was impaired to identify full length phase variable aad9, due to variations of the poly-C tract within the gene. The genetic determinant responsible for gentamicin resistance of one isolate from Germany could not be identified. GyrT86I, presenting the main determinant for (fluoro-)quinolone resistance led to a rare atypical phenotype of ciprofloxacin resistance but nalidixic acid sensitivity. Long-read sequencing predicted AMR genes were mainly located on the chromosome, and rarely on plasmids. Predictions from long- and short-read sequencing, respectively, often differed. AMR genes were often organized in multidrug resistance islands (MDRI) and partially located in proximity to transposase genes, suggesting main mobilization of resistance determinants is via natural transformation and transposition in Campylobacter. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that there is frequent resistance gene duplication, mosaicism, and mutation leading to gene variation and truncation in Campylobacter strains that have not been reported in previous studies and are missing from databases. Furthermore, there is a need for deciphering yet unknown resistance mechanisms and resistance spread in thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. that may pose a challenge to global food safety.

Salinization is one of the leading causes of arable land shrinkage and rice yield decline, recently. Therefore, developing and utilizing salt-tolerant rice varieties have been seen as a crucial and urgent strategy to reduce the effects of saline intrusion and protect food security worldwide. In the current study, the CRISPR/Cas9 system was utilized to induce targeted mutations in the coding sequence of the OsDSG1, a gene involved in the ubiquitination pathway and the regulation of biochemical reactions in rice. The CRISPR/Cas9-induced mutations of the OsDSG1 were generated in a local rice cultivar and the mutant inheritance was validated at different generations. The OsDSG1 mutant lines showed an enhancement in salt tolerance compared to wild type plants at both germination and seedling stages indicated by increases in plant height, root length, and total fresh weight as well as the total chlorophyll and relative water contents under the salt stress condition. In addition, lower proline and MDA contents were observed in mutant rice as compared to wild type plants in the presence of salt stress. Importantly, no effect on seed germination and plant growth parameters was recorded in the CRISRP/Cas9-induced mutant rice under the normal condition. This study again indicates the involvement of the OsDSG1 gene in the salt resistant mechanism in rice and provides a potential strategy to enhance the tolerance of local rice varieties to the salt stress.

BACKGROUND: ND2 in Ho Chi Minh City is currently the only public center that performs PLT in Southern Vietnam. In 2005, the first PLT was successfully performed, with support from Belgian experts. This study reviews the implementation of PLT at our center and evaluates the results and challenges. METHODS: Implementation of PLT at ND2 required medico-surgical team building and extensive improvement of hospital facilities. Records of 13 transplant recipients from 2005 to 2020 were studied retrospectively. Short- and long-term complications, as well as the survival rates, were reported. RESULTS: The mean follow-up time was 8.3 ± 5.7 years. Surgical complications included one case of hepatic artery thrombosis that was successfully repaired, one case of colon perforation resulting in death from sepsis, and two cases of bile leak that were drained surgically. PTLD was observed in five patients, of whom three died. There were no cases of retransplantation. The 1-year, 5-year, and 10-year patient survival rates were 84.6%, 69.2%, and 69.2%, respectively. There were no cases of complication or death among the donors. CONCLUSION: Living-donor PLT was developed at ND2 for providing a life-saving treatment to children with end-stage liver disease. Early surgical complication rate was low, and the patient survival rate was satisfactory at 1 year. Long-term survival decreased considerably due to PTLD. Future challenges include surgical autonomy and improvement of long-term medical follow-up with a particular emphasis on prevention and management of Epstein-Barr virus-related disease.

BACKGROUND: Natural products are often friendly and can be used on children's skin after systematic and careful research. Therefore, in this study, the Royal Oji Complex (ROC), a product with natural ingredients, was used to study their effectiveness on keratinocytes taken from the skin of children from 0 to 3 years old. METHOD: Normal human epidermal keratinocytes and tissue-isolated keratinocytes (TIKC) from young donors were treated with three different concentrations of ROC: 0.1, 1, and 10 ppm. The mRNA expression of the epidermal barrier's essential genes, such as hyaluronic acid synthase 3 (Has3), involucrin (IVL), loricrin (LOR), and claudin-1 (CLD1) was investigated using qRT-PCR. Ceramide content was measured by ELISA, with retinoic acid (R.A.) and amarogentin (AMA) serving as positive controls. RESULTS: ROC significantly elevated HAS3 gene expression in HEKn cells, especially at 10 ppm, indicating potential advantages for skin hydration in young infants. IVL increased at first but decreased as ROC concentrations increased. LOR was upregulated at lower ROC concentrations but reduced at higher doses. CLD1 gene expression increased considerably in HEKn but reduced with increasing ROC doses. Ceramide concentration increased somewhat but not significantly at 10 ppm. CONCLUSION: ROC shows potential in altering keratinocyte gene expression, with unique responses in HEKn and TIKC from young donors. While changes in ceramide content were insignificant, these results help to comprehend ROC's multiple effects on young children's skin.

BACKGROUND: Injectable filler, a nonsurgical beauty method, has gained popularity in rejuvenating sagging skin. In this study, polydioxanone (PDO) was utilized as the main component of the ULTRACOL200 filler that helps stimulate collagenesis and provide skin radiant effects. The study aimed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of ULTRACOL200 with other commercialized products in visually improving dermatological problems. METHODS: Herein, 31 participants aged between 20 and 59 years were enrolled in the study. 1 mL of the testing product, as well as the quantity for the compared groups was injected into each participants face side individually. Subsequently, skin texture and sunken volume of skin were measured using ANTERA 3D CS imaging technology at three periods: before the application, 4 weeks after the initial application, and 4 weeks after the 2nd application of ULTRACOL200. RESULTS: The final results of skin texture and wrinkle volume evaluation consistently demonstrated significant enhancement. Consequently, subjective questionnaires were provided to the participants to evaluate the efficacy of the testing product, illustrating satisfactory responses after the twice applications. CONCLUSION: The investigation has contributed substantially to the comprehension of a PDO-based filler (ULTRACOL200) for skin enhancement and provided profound insight for future clinical trials.

In Vietnam, the stems and roots of the Rutaceous plant Paramignya trimera (Oliv.) Burkill (known locally as "Xáo tam phân") are widely used to treat liver diseases such as viral hepatitis and acute and chronic cirrhosis. In an effort to search for Vietnamese natural compounds capable of inhibiting coronavirus based on molecular docking screening, two new dimeric coumarin glycosides, namely cis-paratrimerin B (1) and cis-paratrimerin A (2), and two previously identified coumarins, the trans-isomers paratrimerin B (3) and paratrimerin A (4), were isolated from the roots of P. trimera and tested for their anti-angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) inhibitory properties in vitro. It was discovered that ACE-2 enzyme was inhibited by cis-paratrimerin B (1), cis-paratrimerin A (2), and trans-paratrimerin B (3), with IC50 values of 28.9, 68, and 77 µM, respectively. Docking simulations revealed that four biscoumarin glycosides had good binding energies (∆G values ranging from -10.6 to -14.7 kcal/mol) and mostly bound to the S1' subsite of the ACE-2 protein. The key interactions of these natural ligands include metal chelation with zinc ions and multiple H-bonds with Ser128, Glu145, His345, Lys363, Thr371, Glu406, and Tyr803. Our findings demonstrated that biscoumarin glycosides from P. trimera roots occur naturally in both cis- and trans-diastereomeric forms. The biscoumarin glycosides Lys363, Thr371, Glu406, and Tyr803. Our findings demonstrated that biscoumarin glycosides from P. trimera roots hold potential for further studies as natural ACE-2 inhibitors for preventing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Despite having relatively high COVID-19 vaccine coverage in Vietnam, a fraction of COVID-19 patients required hospitalization due to severe symptoms. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical, laboratory, complications, and treatment of COVID-19 patients hospitalized during the pandemic's fourth wave. METHODS: Genome sequencing was performed on COVID-19 patients. Data on clinical characteristics, treatment, complications, and outcomes were consistently collected. RESULTS: The clinical classifications were mild (37.43%), moderate (24.2%), and severe (38.37%). Patients with co-morbidities, high fever >39 °C, hypertension, tachycardia, tachypnea, and SpO2<90%, had a 1.2-4 folds higher of severe progression than those with mild/moderate. Serious consequences were much more common in the severe patients than in the mild/moderate. The respiratory system of severe patients was generally documented as fine, coarse crackles, and CT scanner shown ground glass, consolidation, and opacity, with Delta variant accounting for 92.6%. Complications were common in the severe patients, including bacteria pneumonia (36.42%), ARDS (61.11%), blood clotting disorder (7.14%), infection (46.92%), and acute kidney injury (12.35%). Antiviral, antifungal, corticosteroid, anticoagulant, and ECMO regimens were utilized. Patients died mostly as a result of co-morbidities, low SpO2, lung injury, and complications such as bacterial + fungal pneumonia (83.9%), ARDS (83.9%), bacteremia (56.5%), injury acute renal failure (27.4%), and coagulopathy (12.9%). CONCLUSION: Severe and critical COVID-19 patients frequently have several comorbidities, multiple lung lesions along with a variety of clinical signs. Despite receiving antivirals, antibiotics, corticosteroids, anticoagulants, and even ECMO therapy, the patient encountered multiple complications, with a fatality rate of up to 38.27%.

Influenza A viruses are a One Health threat because they can spill over between host populations, including among humans, swine, and birds. Surveillance of swine influenza virus in Hanoi, Vietnam, during 2013-2019 revealed gene pool enrichment from imported swine from Asia and North America and showed long-term maintenance, persistence, and reassortment of virus lineages. Genome sequencing showed continuous enrichment of H1 and H3 diversity through repeat introduction of human virus variants and swine influenza viruses endemic in other countries. In particular, the North American H1-δ1a strain, which has a triple-reassortant backbone that potentially results in increased human adaptation, emerged as a virus that could pose a zoonotic threat. Co-circulation of H1-δ1a viruses with other swine influenza virus genotypes raises concerns for both human and animal health.

We analyzed 1,303 SARS-CoV-2 whole-genome sequences from Vietnam, and found the Alpha and Delta variants were responsible for a large nationwide outbreak of COVID-19 in 2021. The Delta variant was confined to the AY.57 lineage and caused >1.7 million infections and >32,000 deaths. Viral transmission was strongly affected by nonpharmaceutical interventions.

BACKGROUND: Powdery mildew is a major disease that causes great losses in soybean yield and seed quality. Disease-resistant varieties, which are generated by reducing the impact of susceptibility genes through mutation in host plants, would be an effective approach to protect crops from this disease. The Mildew Locus O (MLO) genes are well-known susceptibility genes for powdery mildew in plant. In this study, we utilized the CRISPR/Cas9 system to induce targeted mutations in the soybean GmMLO genes to improve powdery mildew resistance. RESULTS: A dual-sgRNA CRISPR/Cas9 construct was designed and successfully transferred into the Vietnamese soybean cultivar DT26 through Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. Various mutant forms of the GmMLO genes including biallelic, chimeric and homozygous were found at the T0 generation. The inheritance and segregation of CRISPR/Cas9-induced mutations were confirmed and validated at the T1 and T2 generations. Out of six GmMLO genes in the soybean genome, we obtained the Gmmlo02/Gmmlo19/Gmmlo23 triple and Gmmlo02/Gmmlo19/Gmmlo20/Gmmlo23 quadruple knockout mutants at the T2 generation. When challenged with Erysiphe diffusa, a fungus that causes soybean powdery mildew, all mutant plants showed enhanced resistance to the pathogen, especially the quadruple mutant. The powdery mildew severity in the mutant soybeans was reduced by up to 36.4% compared to wild-type plants. In addition, no pleiotropic effect on soybean growth and development under net-house conditions was observed in the CRISPR/Cas9 mutants. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate the involvement of GmMLO02, GmMLO19, GmMLO20 and GmMLO23 genes in powdery mildew susceptibility in soybean. Further research should be conducted to investigate the roles of individual tested genes and the involvement of other GmMLO genes in this disease infection mechanism. Importantly, utilizing the CRISPR/Cas9 system successfully created the Gmmlo transgene-free homozygous mutant lines with enhanced resistance to powdery mildew, which could be potential materials for soybean breeding programs.

MAIN CONCLUSION: Induced mutations in the SC-uORF of the tomato transcription factor gene SlbZIP1 by the CRISPR/Cas9 system led to the high accumulation of sugar and amino acid contents in tomato fruits. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most popular and consumed vegetable crops in the world. Among important traits for tomato improvement such as yield, biotic and abiotic resistances, appearance, post-harvest shelf life and fruit quality, the last one seems to face more challenges because of its genetic and biochemical complexities. In this study, a dual-gRNAs CRISPR/Cas9 system was developed to induce targeted mutations in uORF regions of the SlbZIP1, a gene involved in the sucrose-induced repression of translation (SIRT) mechanism. Different induced mutations in the SlbZIP1-uORF region were identified at the T0 generation, stably transferred to the offspring, and no mutation was found at potential off-target sites. The induced mutations in the SlbZIP1-uORF region affected the transcription of SlbZIP1 and related genes in sugar and amino acid biosynthesis. Fruit component analysis showed significant increases in soluble solid, sugar and total amino acid contents in all SlbZIP1-uORF mutant lines. The accumulation of sour-tasting amino acids, including aspartic and glutamic acids, raised from 77 to 144%, while the accumulation of sweet-tasting amino acids such as alanine, glycine, proline, serine, and threonine increased from 14 to 107% in the mutant plants. Importantly, the potential SlbZIP1-uORF mutant lines with desirable fruit traits and no impaired effect on plant phenotype, growth and development were identified under the growth chamber condition. Our result indicates the potential utility of the CRISPR/Cas9 system for fruit quality improvement in tomato and other important crops.

In this study, the features of resistive random access memory (RRAM) employing a straightforward Cr/MAPbI3 /FTO three-layer structure have been examined and clarified. The device displays various resistance switching (RS) behavior at various sweep voltages between 0.5 and 5 V. The RS effect has a conversion in the direction of the SET and RESET processes during sweeping for a number of cycles at a specific voltage. The directional change of the RS processes corresponds to the dominant transition between the generation/recombination of iodide ion and vacancy in the MAPbI3 perovskite layer and the electrochemical metallization of the Cr electrode under the influence of an electric field, which results in the conductive filament (CF) formation/rupture. At each stage, these processes are controlled by specific charge conduction mechanisms, including Ohmic conduction, space-charge-limited conduction (SCLC), and variable-range hopping (VRH). By identifying the biased voltage and the quantity of voltage sweep cycles, one can take a new approach to control or modulate the pathways for effective charge transport. This new approach is made possible by an understanding of the RS characteristics and the corresponding mechanisms causing the variation of RS behavior in the structure.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) functions to maintain eye stability during head movement, and VOR gain can be dynamically increased or decreased by gain-up or gain-down adaptation. In this study, we investigated the impact of a differential training paradigm with varying frequencies and amplitudes on the level of VOR adaptation in mice. Training for gain-up (out of phase) or gain-down (in phase) VOR adaptation was applied for 60 min using two protocols: (1) oscillation of a drum and turntable with fixed frequency and differing amplitudes (0.5 Hz/2.5°, 0.5 Hz/5° and 0.5 Hz/10°). (2) Oscillation of a drum and turntable with fixed amplitude and a differing frequency (0.25 Hz/5°, 0.5 Hz/5° and 1 Hz/5°). VOR adaptation occurred distinctively in gain-up and gain-down learning. In gain-up VOR adaptation, the learned increase in VOR gain was greatest when trained with the same frequency and amplitude as the test stimulation, and VOR gain decreased after gain-up training with too high a frequency or amplitude. In gain-down VOR adaptation, the decrease in VOR gain increased as the training frequency or amplitude increased. These results suggest that different mechanisms are, at least in part, involved in gain-up and gain-down VOR adaptation.

A series of small chromium-doped silicon clusters CrSin with n = 3-10 in the cationic, neutral and anionic charge states were investigated using quantum chemical methods. The CrSin+ cations with n = 6-10 were produced in the gas phase and characterized by far-IR multiple photon dissociation (IR-MPD) spectroscopy. Good agreement between experimental spectra in the 200-600 cm-1 frequency range and those determined for the lowest-energy isomers by density functional theory calculations (B3P86/6-311+G(d)) provide a strong support for the geometrical assignments. An extensive structural comparison for the three different charge states shows that the structural growth mechanism inherently depends on the charge. While the structures of the cationic clusters are preferentially formed by addition of the Cr dopant to the corresponding pure silicon cluster, it favors substitution in both the neutral and anionic counterparts. The Si-Cr bonds of the studied CrSin+/0/- clusters are polar covalent. Apart from a basket-like Cr@Si9- and an endohedral Cr@Si10- cage, the Cr dopant takes an exohedral position and bears a large positive charge in the clusters. The exohedrally doped clusters also have a high spin density on Cr, manifesting the fact that the intrinsic magnetic moment of the transition metal dopant is well conserved. Three CrSin clusters have a pair of enantiomeric isomers in their ground state, namely the cationic n = 9 and the neutral and anionic n = 7. Those can be distinguished from each other by their electronic circular dichroism spectra, calculated using time-dependent density functional theory. Those enantiomers, being intrinsically chiral inorganic compounds, might be used as building blocks of optical-magnetic nanomaterials because of their high magnetic moments and ability to rotate the plane of polarization.

PURPOSE: Data regarding the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in men and women after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in low-and-middle incomes countries remains scarce. To investigate sex difference in the HRQoL at 30 days and 12 months post PCI in Vietnam. METHODS: We used data from a single percutaneous coronary registry established in the Vietnam National Heart Institute. The HRQoL was measured using the EQ-5D-3L instrument via telephone interviews, and information about demographics, clinical presentation and procedures was obtained through face-to-face interviews and medical records. The HRQoL between men and women were compared using independent samples t tests, the Mann-Whitney U test or univariate/multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: There were 866 patients included in this cohort, with the proportion of women being nearly half of men (32.1 vs 67.9%). Women were 3.5 years older, had lower income and educational levels but greater prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors. At 30 days, women significantly had more problems in mobility, personal care and pain/discomfort compared to men. At 12 months, women had more problem than men in usual activity. The geometric means of HRQoL was lower in women at 30 days, but not in 12 months. From 30 days to 12 months after discharge, women showed better recovery in mobility compared to men, but not in other dimensions. CONCLUSIONS: In this first insight of sex differences in HRQoL following PCI in Vietnam, women appeared to have worse quality of life, especially at 30 days after discharge but they showed better recovery in mobility at 12 months compared to men.

Fermentation technology using endophytes is considered a potential alternative approach for producing pharmaceutical compounds like podophyllotoxin (PTOX). In this study, fungus TQN5T (VCCM 44284) was selected from endophytic fungi isolated from Dysosma versipellis in Vietnam for PTOX production through TLC. The presence of PTOX in TQN5T was further confirmed by HPLC. Molecular identification indicated TQN5T as Fusarium proliferatum with 99.43% identity. This result was asserted by morphological characteristics such as white cottony, filamentous colony, layer and branched mycelium, and clear hyphae septa. Cytotoxic assay indicated both biomass extract and culture filtrate of TQN5T presented strong cytotoxicity on LU-1 and HepG2 with IC50 of 0.11, 0.20, 0.041, and 0071, respectively, implying anti-cancer compounds were accumulated in the mycelium and secreted into the medium. Further, the production of PTOX in TQN5T was investigated in the fermentation condition supplemented with 10 µg/ml of host plant extract or phenylalanine as elicitors. The results revealed a significantly higher amount of PTOX in the PDB + PE and PDB + PA at all studied time points in comparison with PDB (control). Especially, after 168 h of culture, PTOX content in the PDB with plant extract reached the peak with 314 µg/g DW which is 10% higher than the best yield of PTOX in previous studies, denoting F. proliferatum TQN5T as a promising PTOX producer. This is the first study on enhancing the PTOX production in endophytic fungi by supplementing phenylalanine-a precursor for PTOX biosynthesis in plants into fermented media, suggesting a common PTOX biosynthetic pathway between host plant and endophytes. KEY POINTS: • Fusarium proliferatum TQN5T was proven for PTOX production. • Both mycelia extract and spent broth extract of Fusarium proliferatum TQN5T presented strong cytotoxicity on cancer cell lines LU-1 and HepG2. • The supplementation of 10 µg/ml host plant extract and phenylalanine into fermentation media of F. proliferatum TQN5T improved the yield of PTOX.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable death globally. Vietnam's 2012 Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms establishes all healthcare facilities as smoke-free environments. We aimed to evaluate the implementation of these policies within health facilities across Vietnam. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was undertaken at 40 central, provincial, district and commune healthcare facilities in four provinces of Vietnam. The presence of tobacco sales, smoke-free signage, evidence of recent tobacco use and smoking behaviours by patients and staff were observed over a 1-week period at multiple locations within each facility. Adherence with national regulations was reported using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: 23 out of 40 facilities (57.5%) followed the requirements of the national smoke-free policy regarding tobacco sales, advertising and signage. Smoking was observed within health facility grounds at 26 (65%) facilities during the observation period. Indirect evidence of smoking was observed at 35 (88%) facilities. Sites where smoking was permitted (n=2) were more likely to have observed smoking behaviour (relative risk (RR) 2.16, 95% CI 1.83 to 2.56). Facilities where tobacco was sold (n=7) were more likely to have smoking behaviour observed at any of their sites (RR 1.53, 95% CI 0.93 to 2.51). CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of current smoke-free hospital regulations remains incomplete, with widespread evidence of smoking observed at three levels of the Vietnamese healthcare facilities. Further interventions are required to establish the reputation of Vietnamese healthcare facilities as smoke-free environments.

PURPOSE: Head circumference (HC) is an important clinical tool for following head growth in children with craniosynostosis (CS). The purpose of this study is to quantify the usefulness of HC along continuum of CS care, from diagnosis to pre- and post-operative (pre-op, post-op) follow-up in Vietnamese children. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 54 nonsyndromic single-suture CS patients undergoing open surgery from January 2015 to January 2020 was collected at Children's Hospital 2, Vietnam. HC z-score on admission was compared with World Health Organization (WHO) standards to evaluate for utility in initial diagnosis. Pre-op and post-op HC were compared to demonstrate the evolution of head growth following reconstruction. RESULTS: Nonsyndromic single-suture CS was more predominant in males (79.6%) than in females (20.4%). The mean HC z-score was - 0.38 [Formula: see text] 1.29 similar to normal WHO standards regardless of which sutural involvement. The HC z-score increased above + 1 standard deviation (SD) significantly at 3 months of follow-up (p < 0.001); however, the trajectory gradually decreased after the first year of surgery. One patient (1.8%, 1/54) demonstrated restenosis and delayed intracranial hypertension (DIH) 4 years after reconstruction. CONCLUSIONS: The HC in nonsyndromic single-suture CS children presents similarly to the values of healthy children. Additionally, HC reliably increased after reconstruction and gradually normalized over subsequent years. This indicator is consistent in Southeast Asian populations and should be used to follow all patients to assess the normal progression of post-op head growth and as a useful indicator of suspected recurrent synostosis.

The stilbene-rich acetone fraction in high yield (6.6 %, PEAS) of Passiflora edulis Sims was prepared and evaluated for neuroprotective activity in murine Alzheimer's disease model induced by aluminum chloride and D-galactose. The phytochemical and HPLC-DAD-MS analysis of the polyphenolic stilbene-rich acetone fraction showed that it contained different stilbenes including trans-piceatannol, scirpusins A-B and cassigarol E. The total phenolic content (TPC) of PEAS was 413.87±1.71 mg GAE eqv/g. The neuroprotective activity of PEAS is typically presented in the Morris water maze-reference Spatial Memory test, where the Alzheimer's mice treated at 100 mg/kg (Alz-ED1) and 200 mg/kg (Alz-ED2) spent less than 47 % and 66 % of the time, respectively, than the Alzheimer's model mice (Alz). Two simple stilbenes, trans-piceatannol and trans-resveratrol, showed selectively inhibitory activity in silico against acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Two stilbene dimers, cassigarol E and scirpusin A, exhibited low nanomolar inhibitory potential against AChE and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), significantly lower than those of the positive control, donepezil and tacrine. These findings suggest that the stilbenes from P. edulis seeds, particularly the stilbene dimers, warrant further investigation as potential neuroprotective candidates in the prevention of cognitive deficits associated with Alzheimer's disease.

PURPOSE: Congenital tracheal stenosis is a rare but dangerous disease. Reconstructive tracheal surgery is a life-saving treatment but also a challenging procedure. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of tracheal reconstruction surgery. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted with all the records of congenital tracheal stenosis which had been managed by tracheal reconstruction surgery at Children's Hospital 2 Ho Chi Minh City from August 2013 to August 2022. RESULTS: Sixty-seven cases, who underwent slide tracheoplasty, were included in our study. Mean age was 7.6 months (25 days - 8 years). Common congenital-associated lesion was left pulmonary artery sling, accounting for 65.7% of cases. Bronchial stenosis was found in 22.4% patients. Emergency surgery was performed in eight cases. The survival rate in this review was 86.6%. Nine patients died in which four of nine cases (44.4%) were emergency surgery. The recurrent stenosis rate was 8.9%, only two cases needed reoperation in which one died and one recovered uneventfully. The outcomes of surgery were good in 53 cases (79.1%). CONCLUSION: Tracheal reconstruction surgery with slide tracheoplasty technique is safe and versatile technique which is feasible in every case of congenital tracheal stenosis. Mortality was associated with severe cases which required emergency surgery.
