PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to compare panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for the assessment of external root resorption (ERR) of second molars associated with impacted third molars. In addition, the prevalence of ERR in second molars and the inclinations of the third molars more associated with ERR were investigated in both imaging methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 66 individuals with maxillary and mandibular impacted third molars (n = 188) seen on panoramic radiographs and CBCT images. The presence of ERR on the adjacent second molar was investigated, and the position of the third molar was determined using Winter's classification (vertical, horizontal, mesioangular, distoangular, and transverse). Statistical analysis was performed using the χ(2) test, Fisher exact test, and 2-proportion Z test (the significance level was set at 5%). RESULTS: A significantly greater number of cases of ERR (P < .0001) was diagnosed from CBCT images (n = 43, 22.88%) than panoramic radiographs (n = 10, 5.31%). The agreement between the panoramic radiographs and CBCT scans for diagnosing ERR was 4.3%. Mandibular third molars in mesioangular and horizontal inclinations were more likely to cause resorption of the adjacent teeth. CONCLUSIONS: CBCT should be indicated for the diagnosis of ERR in second molars when direct contact between the mandibular second and third molars has been observed on panoramic radiographs, especially in mesioangular or horizontal impactions. Furthermore, considering the propensity of these teeth to cause ERR in second molars, third molar prophylactic extraction could be suggested.

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been proposed as the standard first-line and subsequent treatment for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study analyzed whether patients with good lung immune prognostic index (LIPI) have a better response to ICIs and the relationship between immune-related adverse events (irAEs) and response in clinical practice. Methods: This was an observational, retrospective, single-center study. Patients with stage IV NSCLC between 2016 and 2021 were included in the study. Toxicity was assessed according to The Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. Response assessment was performed according to RECIST 2.0 and immuno-related criteria. Descriptive and survival analyses were conducted. Degree of toxicity and response to treatment (based on treatment and histology) were assessed. LIPI and response were assessed. LIPI included dNLR (absolute neutrophil count/(white blood cell count - absolute neutrophil count)) ≥ 3 and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) greater than the upper limit of normal. Patients were stratified into good (G), intermediate (I), and poor (P) prognostic groups. Results: A total of 168 patients were included (130 men and 38 women, mean age 64.3 years). ICI use in the first- or second-line treatment was 65% and 35%, respectively. Fifteen (9%) patients showed complete response (CR), 50 (30%) showed partial response (PR), 39 (22%) had stable disease (SD), 45 (28%) had progressive disease (PD), and 19 (11%) were not evaluated (NE). Patients with good prognostic LIPI (dNLR < 3 and normal LDH levels) showed a better response. Progression-free survival (PFS) was 19 months in G, 6 months in I, and 2 months in P. Overall survival (OS) was 27 months in G, 8 months in I, and 3 months in P. One hundred fourteen patients died (56% G, 76% I, 93% P). Patients with adenocarcinoma were 116 (77 with irAEs G1-4 (13 CR, 31 PR, 21 SD, eight PD, and four NE)), and without were 39 (three PR, six SD, 21 PD, and nine NE). Fifty-two patients had squamous carcinoma (27 with irAEs G1-4 (two CR, 12 PR, nine SD, and four PD)), and 25 did not (four PR, three SD, 12 PD, and six NE)). IrAEs appearance was observed in longer PFS (19 vs. 2 months) and OS (27 vs. 4 months; P < 0.0001). Conclusions: LIPI was a positive predictor of response to ICI. The presence of irAEs is associated with a better immune response. In contrast, the absence of toxicity predicted a worse prognosis.

During the preparation of fixed prosthesis (including individual bridges and crowns) it is important to select the materials that have the best features and properties to predict a successful clinical treatment. The objective of this study was to determine if the chemical and structural characteristics could cause to increase the fracture resistance, we used four bis-acryl resins Luxatemp, Protemp, Structur and Telio. Three-points bending by Flexural test were performed in ten bars and they were carried out to compare with Anova test. In addition, the bis-acryl resins were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, to analyze microstructure and morphology and the molecular structure were performed by Infrared Spectroscopy through Attenuated Total Reflectance. A higher flexural strength was found in Luxatemp and Structur with, no significant differences between this study groups. Regarding Protemp and Telio, these study groups showed a lower flexural strength when were compared with Luxatemp and Structur. These results corroborate SEM and ATR analysis because Luxatemp sample showed a regular size particle on the surface and chemically presents a long cross-linkage polymer chain. The presence of CO3, SiO2 and N-H groups as a fillers particle interacting with OH groups cause a higher flexural strength compared with another groups.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccines have been shown to protect pregnant individuals against mild and severe COVID-19 outcomes. However, limited safety data are available for inactivated (CoronaVac) and mRNA (BNT162b2) vaccines during pregnancy regarding their effect on birth outcomes and neonatal mortality, especially in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with 17 513 singleton live births conceived between 15 May 2021 and 23 October 2021. The primary exposure was maternal vaccination with CoronaVac or mRNA BNT162b2 vaccines and sub-analyses were performed by the gestational trimester of the first dose and the number of doses given during pregnancy. The outcomes were pre-term birth (PTB), small for gestational age (SGA), low birthweight (LBW), low Apgar 5 and neonatal death. We used the Cox model to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) with a 95% CI and applied the inverse probability of treatment weights to generate adjusted HRs. RESULTS: We found no significant increase in the risk of PTB (HR: 0.98; 95% CI 0.88, 1.10), SGA (HR: 1.09; 95% CI 0.96, 1.27), LBW (HR: 1.00; 95% CI 0.88, 1.14), low Apgar 5 (HR: 0.81; 95% CI 0.55, 1.22) or neonatal death (HR: 0.88; 95% CI 0.56, 1.48) in women vaccinated with CoronaVac or BNT162b2 vaccines. These findings were consistent across sub-analyses stratified by the gestational trimester of the first dose and the number of doses given during pregnancy. We found mild yet consistent protection against PTB in women who received different vaccine platforms during the third trimester of pregnancy (any vaccines, HR: 0.78; 95% CI 0.63, 0.98; BNT162b2, HR: 0.75; 95% CI 0.59, 0.99). CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that COVID-19 vaccination in all trimesters of pregnancy, irrespective of the vaccine type, is safe and does not increase the risk of adverse birth outcomes or neonatal deaths.

COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy is safe and effective in reducing the risk of complications. However, the uptake is still below targets worldwide. This study aimed to explore the factors associated with COVID-19 vaccination uptake among pregnant women since data on this topic is scarce in low-to-middle-income countries. A retrospective cohort study included linked data on COVID-19 vaccination and pregnant women who delivered a singleton live birth from August 1, 2021, to July 31, 2022, in Rio de Janeiro City, Brazil. Multiple logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with vaccination during pregnancy, applying a hierarchical model and describing odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals. Of 65,304 pregnant women included in the study, 53.0% (95% CI, 52-53%) received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy. Higher uptake was observed among women aged older than 34 (aOR 1.21, 95%CI 1.15-1.28), black (aOR 1.10, 1.04-1.16), or parda/brown skin colour (aOR 1.05, 1.01-1.09), with less than eight years of education (aOR 1.09, 1.02-1.17), living without a partner (aOR 2.24, 2.16-2.34), more than six antenatal care appointments (aOR 1.92, 1.75-2.09), and having a previous child loss (OR 1.06, 1.02-1.11). These results highlight the need for targeted educational campaigns, trustful communication, and accessibility strategies for specific populations to improve vaccination uptake during pregnancy.

PURPOSE: The study is a prospective case-series analysis to demonstrate a new double bundle technique for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with the use of hamstring tendons through a single tibial tunnel, a double femoral socket with implant-free femoral fixation and interference screw for tibial fixation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients were treated with the same technique. Hamstring tendons were not removed from the tibial side, and using a single tibial and a double femoral tunnel of 8 and 6 mm, respectively, anatomic ACL reconstruction was performed. Graft passage was performed from the tibial side to the posterolateral femoral tunnel and was looped back to the anteromedial femoral tunnel to be fixed on the tibial tunnel with an interference screw and additional extracortical fixation. Follow-up of the study group was performed for a two-year period, documenting standard clinical and radiographic parameters. RESULTS: Post-operative follow-up (mean 24 months) revealed radiological widening of tibial tunnel (mean 133.6%) in all patients and minor femoral tunnels widening (119.4% and 117.5%). Clinical evaluation showed no signs of instability, and knee evaluation using the IKDC score was performed. CONCLUSION: The manuscript describes a novel technique in ACL reconstruction, and reports the radiographic results of tunnel widening and clinical scores. Implant-free femoral fixation led to minor tunnel widening similar to previously published data. Further studies need to be performed to compare the long-term results with different published techniques of cost-effective implant-free ACL reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: Assess the occurrence of secondary brow ptosis after upper lid blepharoplasty. METHODS: Forty-five individuals (n = 90 brows) submitted to upper lid blepharoplasty, were assessed by means of a comparative analysis using pre- and post-operatively digital photographs, in the primary position of the eye. The images were processed using ImageJ "software", transferred to a computer, to an electronic Microsoft Excel 2002(®) worksheet. Angular measurements were used, taking the lateral canthal angle of the brow, the most medial point of the brow, the medial canthal angle and the lateral canthal angle of the lid as anatomical reference points. When the outer angles were reduced or the inner angles increased after surgery this was considered a brow ptosis. Individuals who had undergone lid surgery associated with the eyebrow, previous eyebrow surgery and those with eyelid ptosis were excluded. The difference between the pre-operative and post-operative measurements were analyzed statistically using the Student's t-test for paired samples and the angular variation was compared with their corresponding contralateral sample using Wilcoxon's non-parametric test. RESULTS: The measurements obtained after the blepharoplasty show significant variations from those before the surgery, indicating that the correction of redundant tissues in the brow accentuates the tendency of the eyebrow to move down. The alterations are more important in the lateral portion of the eyebrow and they occur bilaterally. CONCLUSION: The assessment of angular measurements obtained pre- and post-operatively showed that there are secondary changes in the position of the eyebrow as a result of upper eyelid blepharoplasty.

PURPOSE: To describe chorioretinal signs in a case series of Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA). METHODS: This is a multicenter retrospective observational case series with GCA that presented with a headache and an abrupt, unilateral loss in vision. Workup included temporal artery biopsies, intravenous fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), blood levels of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP). RESULTS: There are a total of 8 GCA instances presented. Average age was 74.5. (Range 68-83 years). The patients reported that one eye's visual loss had suddenly started, along with a fresh headache and other systemic symptoms. Eight patients exhibited choroidal ischemia, five paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM) lesions, five cotton wool spots, four anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, and one central retinal arterial occlusion at the time of presentation. The average ESR at presentation was 68 mm/hr (range 4-110), and 4/6 individuals had a significant increase. The mean CRP level was 6.2 mg/dL (range 2.0-15.4), and the level was always over the normal range. All patients' temporal artery biopsies were positive. CONCLUSION: Alongside PAMM lesions, cotton wool spots, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, and central retinal artery occlusion, choroidal ischemia is a key angiographic indicator in the diagnosis of GCA. It may be crucial to recognize these typical ischemic chorioretinal signs while diagnosing GCA.

Recently, several studies have introduced nanotechnology into the area of dental materials with the aim of improving their properties. The objective of this study is to determine the antibacterial and mechanical properties of type I glass ionomers reinforced with halloysite nanotubes modified with 2% chlorhexidine at concentrations of 5% and 10% relative to the total weight of the powder used to construct each sample. Regarding antibacterial effect, 200 samples were established and distributed into four experimental groups and six control groups (4 +ve and 2 -ve), with 20 samples each. The mechanical properties were evaluated in 270 samples, assessing microhardness (30 samples), compressive strength (120 samples), and setting time (120 samples). The groups were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the antibacterial activity of the ionomers was evaluated on Streptococcus mutans for 24 h. The control and positive control groups showed no antibacterial effect, while the experimental group with 5% concentration showed a zone of growth inhibition between 11.35 mm and 11.45 mm, and the group with 10% concentration showed a zone of growth inhibition between 12.50 mm and 13.20 mm. Statistical differences were observed between the experimental groups with 5% and 10% nanotubes. Regarding the mechanical properties, microhardness, and setting time, no statistical difference was found when compared with control groups, while compressive strength showed higher significant values, with ionomers modified with 10% concentration of nanotubes resulting in better compressive strength values. The incorporation of nanotubes at concentrations of 5% and 10% effectively inhibited the presence of S. mutans, particularly when the dose-response relationship was taken into account, with the advantage of maintaining and improving their mechanical properties.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge about the distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes in invasive cervical cancer is crucial to guide the introduction of prophylactic vaccines. We aimed to provide novel and comprehensive data about the worldwide genotype distribution in patients with invasive cervical cancer. METHODS: Paraffin-embedded samples of histologically confirmed cases of invasive cervical cancer were collected from 38 countries in Europe, North America, central South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Inclusion criteria were a pathological confirmation of a primary invasive cervical cancer of epithelial origin in the tissue sample selected for analysis of HPV DNA, and information about the year of diagnosis. HPV detection was done by use of PCR with SPF-10 broad-spectrum primers followed by DNA enzyme immunoassay and genotyping with a reverse hybridisation line probe assay. Sequence analysis was done to characterise HPV-positive samples with unknown HPV types. Data analyses included algorithms of multiple infections to estimate type-specific relative contributions. FINDINGS: 22,661 paraffin-embedded samples were obtained from 14,249 women. 10,575 cases of invasive cervical cancer were included in the study, and 8977 (85%) of these were positive for HPV DNA. The most common HPV types were 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 45, 52, and 58 with a combined worldwide relative contribution of 8196 of 8977 (91%, 95% CI 90-92). HPV types 16 and 18 were detected in 6357 of 8977 of cases (71%, 70-72) of invasive cervical cancer. HPV types 16, 18, and 45 were detected in 443 of 470 cases (94%, 92-96) of cervical adenocarcinomas. Unknown HPV types that were identified with sequence analysis were 26, 30, 61, 67, 69, 82, and 91 in 103 (1%) of 8977 cases of invasive cervical cancer. Women with invasive cervical cancers related to HPV types 16, 18, or 45 presented at a younger mean age than did those with other HPV types (50·0 years [49·6-50·4], 48·2 years [47·3-49·2], 46·8 years [46·6-48·1], and 55·5 years [54·9-56·1], respectively). INTERPRETATION: To our knowledge, this study is the largest assessment of HPV genotypes to date. HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 45, 52, and 58 should be given priority when the cross-protective effects of current vaccines are assessed, and for formulation of recommendations for the use of second-generation polyvalent HPV vaccines. Our results also suggest that type-specific high-risk HPV-DNA-based screening tests and protocols should focus on HPV types 16, 18, and 45.

OBJECTIVE: Dental caries is the most prevalent disease globally, and Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is a common associated oral bacteria. Additionally, S. mutans possess esterase activity capable of degrading resin composites (RC). However, the effect of degradation on the physical-mechanical properties of the RC has not been extensively studied. We evaluated the flexure strength (FS), the diametral tensile strength (DTS), the modulus of elasticity (ME), and the microhardness of three contemporary RC to establish if S. mutans could affect them. METHODS: One hundred thirty-eight bar-shaped and 276 disc-shaped specimens were fabricated with Enamel Plus HRi, IPS Empress Direct, and Clearfil AP-X, and physical-mechanical testing was done after been incubated during 30 and 60 days in culture media with or without S. mutans. Also, a scanning electron microscope was used to identify surface changes. RESULTS: None of the tested RC were affected in their mechanical properties (FS, ME, and DTS). However, Clearfil AP-X and Enamel Plus HRI showed eroded surfaces and a decreased microhardness after 30 and 60 days S. mutans incubation. IPS Empress Direct presented the lowest values in all the tests, but its physical-mechanical features and surface were not affected by bacteria's exposure. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to S. mutans could affect some contemporary RC; however, the effect seems superficial since its mechanical features were not affected.

Dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya arboviruses are endemic in tropical countries and are transmitted by Aedes aegypti. Resistant populations of this mosquito against chemical insecticides are spreading worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate the biological effects of exposure of pesticide-sensitive Ae. aegypti larvae (Rockefeller) to conidia of the entomopathogen, Metarhizium brunneum, laboratory strains ARSEF 4556 and V275, and any synergistic activity of phenylthiourea (PTU). In addition, to investigate the nature of any cross-resistance mechanisms, these M. brunneum strains were tested against the Rockefeller larvae and two temephos- and deltamethrin-resistant wild mosquito populations from Rio de Janeiro. Treatment of Rockefeller larvae with 106 conidia/ml of ARSEF 4556 and V275 fungal strains resulted in significant decreased survival rates to 40 and 53.33%, respectively (P < 0.0001), compared with untreated controls. In contrast, exposure to 104 or 105 conidia/ml showed no such significant survival differences. However, the addition of PTU to the conidia in the bioassays significantly increased mortalities in all groups and induced a molt block. Experiments also showed no differences in Ae. aegypti mortalities between the fungal treated, wild pesticide-resistant populations and the Rockefeller sensitive strain. The results show the efficacy of M. brunneum in controlling Ae. aegypti larvae and the synergistic role of PTU in this process. Importantly, there was no indication of any cross-resistance mechanisms between Ae. aegypti sensitive or resistant to pesticides following treatment with the fungi. These results further support using M. brunneum as an alternative biological control agent against mosquito populations resistant to chemical insecticides.

Hansen's disease (HD) belongs to the group of neglected diseases and can cause physical deformities and disabilities, in addition to leading to social discrimination. Ocular involvement in HD is estimated at 70-75% worldwide. About 10-50% suffer from severe ocular symptoms and loss of vision occurs in approximately 5% of cases. Ocular changes may persist or worsen even after patients are considered cured and it is necessary to better understand these conditions in order to determine the need for additional public policies. The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence of ocular involvement in patients with HD at two specialist referral centers for treatment of the disease. A cross-sectional study was conducted with ophthalmological evaluations of patients with HD from June 2017 to June 2018. Diagnostic ocular findings, corrected visual acuity, and refractive error were described. Findings were correlated with patients' clinical and epidemiological variables. A total of 86 patients were evaluated, with a mean age of 50.1 years, predominantly males (59.3%), and with multibacillary HD (92%). The prevalence of ophthalmologic changes was 100% and the most common were dysfunction of the Meibomian glands (89.5%) and dry eye syndrome (81.4%). Cataracts were observed in 22 patients (25.6%), but best corrected visual acuity was normal or near normal in 84 patients (97.7%) and there were no cases of bilateral blindness. Patients with some degree of physical disability had more ophthalmological alterations, involving both the ocular adnexa (p = 0.03) and the ocular globe (p = 0.04). Ocular involvement is common in patients with Hansen's disease, reinforcing the importance of ophthalmologic examination in the evaluation and follow-up of these patients.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in different frequencies on the quadriceps femoris. A randomized, controlled, blind cross-sectional study. METHODS: Thirty subjects (12 men and 18 women), with an average age of 24.67 years, weight of 65.62 kg and height of 1.69 m were evaluated. Three random test conditions were applied: maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), maximum voluntary isometric contraction with medium frequency current (MVIC-MF) and maximum voluntary isometric contraction with low frequency current (MVIC-LF). Four MVICs were applied in each situation. The time between different isometric contraction types was 90 seconds while the time between the same conditions of contraction was 10 seconds. RESULTS: Two-way ANOVA test showed that MVIC-MF had higher values for peak torque than MVIC-LF (p=0.02). Significant statistical results were found when comparing MVIC-MF and MVIC (p=0.03), but not for MVIC and MVIC-LF (p=0.52). CONCLUSION: Maximum voluntary isometric contraction associated with medium-frequency electrical stimulation was more effective than other NMES conditions. OBJETIVO: A finalidade deste estudo foi investigar os efeitos da estimulação elétrica neuromuscular (EENM) em diferentes frequências sobre o músculo quadríceps femoral. Estudo randomizado, transversal, controlado e cego. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados trinta indivíduos de ambos os sexos (12 homens e 18 mulheres) com média de idade de 24,67 anos, peso 65,62 kg e altura 1,69 m. Os indivíduos foram submetidos a três condições de testes randomizados: contração voluntária isométrica máxima (CVIM), contração voluntária isométrica máxima associada à corrente de média frequência (CVIMMF) e contração voluntária isométrica máxima associada à baixa frequência (CVIMBF), sendo realizadas quatro repetições de CVIM em cada situação. O tempo entre as diferentes condições de contrações isométricas foi de 90 segundos e o tempo entre as contrações isométricas das mesmas condições foi de 10 segundos. RESULTADOS: O teste ANOVA mostrou que a CVIMMF obteve valores de pico de torque maiores do que a CVIMBF (p = 0,02), com diferença significativa. Foram encontrados resultados com significância estatística ao comparar CVIMMF e CVIM (p = 0,03), mas não entre CVIM e CVIMBF (p = 0,52). CONCLUSÕES: A contração voluntária isométrica máxima associada a EENM de média frequência foi mais efetiva do que as outras situações de EENM. Gallbladder dysplasia can progress to cancer and may be associated with increased cancer risk at other biliary tract sites. Thus, its accurate identification is relevant both for etiologic understanding and for clinical purposes. Data on the frequency and distribution of gallbladder dysplasia are lacking owing to limited gallbladder sampling and inability to visualize dysplasia grossly. An expert pathology group used consensus criteria to review 140 totally sampled consecutive cholecystectomy specimens from Chilean women. Three cases (2%) revealed incidental invasive carcinoma, all T2, along with high-grade dysplasia (HGD). The surface areas covered by dysplasia or cancer in these cases were 9%, 37%, and 87%. Although the first longitudinal ("diagnostic") section of the whole gallbladder captured HGD or cancer in all 3 cases, the deepest focus of invasive carcinoma was not present in this section. Fourteen additional cases (10%) had low-grade dysplasia (LGD), which was typically very focal (covering <5% of the surface) and most often occurred in the fundus. LGD was not present in the diagnostic section of 5 cases (38%) and would have been missed without additional sampling. None of the cancers or dysplasias were grossly visible. Although HGD and carcinoma are likely to be identified in "diagnostic" sections, accurate staging requires total sampling. LGD is typically very focal and would often be missed in routine practice. To identify cancer precursors, additional sampling, particularly of the fundus, may be warranted. The predominance of LGD in the fundus also provides etiologic insight, supporting the contribution of gallstones and chronic inflammation.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The medicinal plant Sedum oxypetalum Kunth (Crassulaceae), locally known as Jiote or in general Siempreviva (always alive) has been traditionally used by people of the Mexican community of Tenango del Valle as a home remedy to treat periodontal diseases, inducing teeth strengthening. Consequently, the aim of this work was to investigate its capacity directed to mineralized tissues regeneration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aerial parts of the plant were processed and its aqueous extract (AE) was chemically characterized. The AE and its components sedoheptulose and syngenite were tested for either osteogenic differentiation or mineral-nucleation induction respectively. RESULTS: The AE and one of its components (sedoheptulose) were shown to promote the proliferation and/or osteogenic differentiation by Human Periodontal Ligament-Derived Cells (hPDLs), while inducing the mineralization process. The AE also promoted the nucleation of octacalcium phosphate and its component syngenite, the hydroxyapatite crystals formation in vitro. CONCLUSION: The findings reported herein support the traditional use of S. oxypetalum due to its potential capacity to promote the regeneration of mineralized tissues.

Monolithic restorations of Y-TZP have been recommended as a restorative alternative on prosthetic dentistry as it allows a substantial reduction of ceramic thickness, which means a greater preservation of tooth structure. However, the influence of grinding and aging when using a thinner layer of the material is unclear. This investigation aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of ceramic thickness (0.5 mm and 1.0 mm), grinding and aging (low-temperature degradation) on the mechanical behavior and surface characteristics of a full-contour Y-TZP ceramic. Y-TZP disc-shaped specimens (15 mm diameter) were manufactured with both thicknesses and randomly assigned into 4 groups considering the factors 'grinding with diamond bur' and 'aging in autoclave'. Surface topography (roughness, 3D profilometry and SEM), phase transformation, flexural strength and structural reliability (Weibull) analyses were executed. Grinding affected the surface topography, while aging did not promote any effect. An increase in m-phase content was observed after grinding and aging, although different susceptibilities were observed. Regardless of zirconia's thickness, no deleterious effect of grinding or aging on the mechanical properties was observed. Thus, in our testing assembly, reducing the thickness of the Y-TZP ceramic did not alter its response to grinding and low temperature degradation and did not impair its mechanical performance.

PURPOSE: To develop an experimental model to be used in the study of low level Laser therapy on viability of random skin flap in rats. METHODS: The sample was 24 Wistar-EPM rats. The random skin flap measured 10 x 4 cm and a plastic sheet was interposed between the flap and donor site. Group 1 (control) underwent sham irradiation with diode laser (830 nm). Group 2 was submitted to laser irradiation with diode laser (830 nm). The animals were submitted to Laser therapy with 36 J/cm(2) energy density (72 seconds) immediately after the surgery and on the four subsequent days. The probe was usually held in contact with the skin flap surface on a point at 2.5 cm cranial from the flap base. On the seventh postoperative day, the percentage of necrotic area was measured and calculated. RESULTS: Group 1 reached an average necrotic area of 48.86%, Group 2 - 23.14%. After the statistic analysis, compared with the control group, Group 2 showed a statistically significant increase in survival area (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The experimental model proved to be reliable to be used in the study of effects of low level laser therapy in random skin flap in rats.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the ocular axial length (AL) and keratometry (K) in Brazilian children with congenital/developmental cataract, assess the differences and evolution of AL and K according to age, and establish functional models of AL and K as function of age. METHODS: Children with congenital/developmental cataract aged 1.5 months old to 8 years old and no other ocular diseases were included. All eyes with unilateral cataract, the left eyes from children with bilateral cataracts, and healthy eyes from children with unilateral cataract were analyzed. After the administration of anesthesia, K was measured with a portable automatic keratometer, and AL was measured with a contact biometer. Cataract surgery was performed immediately after the measurements were taken. The data were statistically analyzed, and a linear regression with an age logarithm was used to model the relationship. RESULTS: Forty-four eyes with cataract were included in this analysis, comprising 15 eyes with unilateral cataract and 29 left eyes from children with bilateral cataracts. The mean age was 27.3 months with a mean AL of 20.63 ± 2.11 mm and a mean K of 44.94 ± 2.44 D. The K value was significantly steeper and the AL value was significantly shorter in younger children (P< 0.001). No significant differences were found neither between eyes with unilateral and bilateral cataracts nor between eyes with unilateral cataract and their corresponding healthy eyes (P >0.05). CONCLUSION: The values of K and AL significantly change with age, especially during the first 6 months of life. A linear functional relationship between K and AL with the logarithm of age and between K and AL was established.

RESUMO O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o efeito da fotobiomodulação associada a exercícios na dor e na funcionalidade de pacientes com osteoartrite de joelho. Para isso foram recrutados 20 pacientes com osteoartrite do joelho uni ou bilateral, que foram distribuídos em dois grupos: grupo-controle (GC), que realizou aplicação de fotobiomodulação (FBM) placebo e um protocolo de exercício; e grupo fotobiomodulação (GF), que realizou aplicação ativa da FBM e o protocolo de exercício, sendo esse realizado duas vezes por semana durante oito semanas e consistindo de alongamentos passivos dos músculos de membros inferiores, straight leg raise, treinamento proprioceptivo e exercícios para o controle da marcha. A FBM foi aplicada com o aparelho cluster contendo quatro diodos de 670 nm e cinco diodos de 850 nm, com uma potência de saída de 540 mW, sendo a dose utilizada de 4 J/cm2. Os grupos foram avaliados pré e pós-tratamento com os questionários SF-36, Lequesne, Tinetti, e por meio da Escala Visual Analógica de dor (EVA). Os dados foram analisados com o método Anova, seguido do Bonferroni. Os dados indicaram melhoras significativas para o GF ao fim do tratamento para as avaliações da EVA (2±1,25 vs. 0,7±0,82; p=0,009). Embora ambos os grupos tenham obtido melhoras significativas ao longo do tratamento, não foi possível observar diferenças significativas entre eles para o restante das avaliações ao final do tratamento. Portanto, conclui-se que o uso da FBM associada a exercícios apresentou melhora da dor nos pacientes com osteoartrite de joelho, embora não tenha sido possível observar diferenças significativas no que diz respeito à funcionalidade.


RESUMEN El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar el efecto de la fotobiomodulación asociada a ejercicios sobre el dolor y la funcionalidad de pacientes con osteoartritis de rodilla. Para ello, se reclutaron a 20 pacientes con osteoartritis de rodilla unilateral o bilateral, que se dividieron en dos grupos: el grupo control (GC), que recibió placebo de fotobiomodulación (FBM) y un protocolo de ejercicio; y el grupo de fotobiomodulación (GF), que recibió la aplicación activa de FBM y el protocolo de ejercicio, el cual se realizó dos veces por semana, durante ocho semanas, y consistió en estiramientos pasivos de los músculos de las extremidades inferiores, straight leg raise, entrenamiento propioceptivo y ejercicios para el control de la marcha. La FBM se aplicó con el dispositivo cluster que contenía cuatro diodos de 670 nm y cinco diodos de 850 nm, con una potencia de salida de 540 mW, y la dosis utilizada fue de 4 J/cm2. Los grupos se evaluaron antes y después del tratamiento por medio de los cuestionarios SF-36, Lequesne, Tinetti y de la Escala Visual Analógica de Dolor (EVA). Los datos se analizaron utilizando el método Anova, seguido del Bonferroni. Los datos apuntaron una mejora significativa en el GF al final del tratamiento mediante las evaluaciones de la EVA (2±1,25 vs. 0,7±0,82; p=0,009). A pesar de que ambos grupos lograron obtener mejoras significativas durante el curso del tratamiento, no fue posible observar diferencias significativas entre ellos en las evaluaciones al final del tratamiento. Por lo tanto, se concluye que el uso de la FBM asociada a ejercicios ocasionó una mejora del dolor en pacientes con osteoartritis de rodilla, aunque no fue posible observar diferencias significativas con respecto a la funcionalidad.


ABSTRACT Our study evaluated the effect of photobiomodulation associated with exercise on pain and functionality of patients with knee osteoarthritis. Twenty patients with unilateral or bilateral knee osteoarthritis were selected and divided into two groups: Control group (CG), which underwent photobiomodulation (PBM) placebo and exercise protocol; and the photobiomodulation group (PG), which performed an active application of the PBM and the exercise protocol - performed twice a week for eight weeks and consisting of passive stretching of the lower extremity muscles, straight leg raise, proprioceptive training and exercises for gait control. PBM was applied through a cluster apparatus containing four diodes of 670 nm and five diodes of 850 nm, with an output power of 540 mW and with a dose of 4J / cm2. The groups were evaluated before and after treatment with the SF-36, Lequesne and Tinetti questionnaires as well as the Visual Analog Pain Scale. Data were analyzed using the Anova method, followed by the post-hoc Bonferroni test. The data indicated significant improvements in the PG at the end of treatment for Visual Analog Pain Scale (2±1.25 vs. 0.7±0.82, p=0.009). Although both groups achieved significant improvements throughout the treatment, we could not observe significant differences between them for the rest of the evaluations at the end of the treatment. Therefore, the use of PBM associated with exercises showed pain improvement in patients with knee osteoarthritis, although it was not possible to observe significant differences in patients' functionality.
