RESUMEN

Revealing low-dimensional material growth dynamics is critical for crystal growth engineering. However, in a practical high-temperature growth system, the crystal growth process is a black box because of the lack of heat-resistant imaging tools. Here, we develop a heat-resistant optical microscope and embed it in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system to investigate two-dimensional (2D) crystal growth dynamics. This in situ optical imaging CVD system can tolerate temperatures of ≤900 °C with a spatial resolution of ∼1 µm. The growth of monolayer MoS2 crystals was studied as a model for 2D crystal growth. The nucleation and growth process have been imaged. Model analysis and simulation have revealed the growth rate, diffusion coefficient, and spatial distribution of the precursor. More importantly, a new vertex-kink-ledge model has been suggested for monolayer crystal growth. This work provides a new technique for in situ microscopic imaging at high temperatures and fundamental insight into 2D crystal growth.

RESUMEN

Recently, aqueous zinc-ion batteries with conversion mechanisms have received wide attention in energy storage systems on account of excellent specific capacity, high power density, and energy density. Unfortunately, some characteristics of cathode material, zinc anode, and electrolyte still limit the development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries possessing conversion mechanism. Consequently, this paper provides a detailed summary of the development for numerous aqueous zinc-based batteries: zinc-sulfur (Zn-S) batteries, zinc-selenium (Zn-Se) batteries, zinc-tellurium (Zn-Te) batteries, zinc-iodine (Zn-I2) batteries, and zinc-bromine (Zn-Br2) batteries. Meanwhile, the reaction conversion mechanism of zinc-based batteries with conversion mechanism and the research progress in the investigation of composite cathode, zinc anode materials, and selection of electrolytes are systematically introduced. Finally, this review comprehensively describes the prospects and outlook of aqueous zinc-ion batteries with conversion mechanism, aiming to promote the rapid development of aqueous zinc-based batteries.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered to be one of the most promising devices for large-scale energy storage systems owing to their high theoretical capacity, environmental friendliness, and safety. However, the ionic intercalation or surface redox mechanisms in conventional cathode materials generally result in unsatisfactory capacities. Conversion-type aqueous zinc-tellurium (Zn-Te) batteries have recently gained widespread attention owing to their high theoretical specific capacities. However, it remains an enormous challenge to improve the slow kinetics of the aqueous Zn-Te batteries. Here, MoO2 nanoclusters embedded in hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanoflower (MoO2 /NC) hosts are successfully synthesized and loaded with Te in aqueous Zn-Te batteries. Benefitting from the highly dispersed MoO2 nanoclusters and hierarchical nanoflower structure with a large specific surface area, the electrochemical kinetics of the Te redox reaction are significantly improved. As a result, the Te-MoO2 /NC electrode exhibits superior cycling stability and a high specific capacity of 493 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 . Meanwhile, the conversion mechanism is systematically explored using a variety of ex situ characterization methods. Therefore, this study provides a novel approach for enhancing the kinetics of the Te redox reaction in aqueous Zn-Te batteries.

Due to the fascinating features, pulsating solitons attract much attention in the field of nonlinear soliton dynamics and ultrafast lasers. So far, most of the investigations on pulsating soliton are conducted in Er-doped fiber lasers. In this work, we reported the periodic transition between two evolving pulsating soliton states in an Yb-doped fiber laser. By using the real-time measurement techniques, the spectral and temporal characteristics of this transition state were investigated. Two evolving soliton pulsation states have similar evolution process, i.e., from pulsating towards quasi-stable mode-locked states. However, the details of the two processes are different, such as the pulse energy levels, pulsating modulation depths, duration of quasi-stable mode-locked states. The transition between two evolving soliton pulsation states could be attributed to the interaction of the polarizer and the varying polarization states of the pulse inside the laser cavity. The experimental results will contribute to the further understanding of soliton pulsating dynamics in dissipative optical systems.

Adsorption is an effective method for the treatment of heavy metal ions in water; however, the existing adsorbents are complicated to prepare, and costly and difficult to recover. In this work, a 3D wood microfilter was prepared by modifying wood for the removal of heavy metal contaminants from water. First, a green deep eutectic solvent was used to remove lignin from beech wood. Then citric acid and l-cysteine were sequentially used to graft carboxyl and sulfhydryl groups (-SHs) on the surface of cellulose. Finally, a three-dimensional wood microfilter with an abundant porous structure and adsorption sites was formed. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms of heavy metal ions on the 3D wood microfilter were systematically investigated using Cu2+ and Cd2+ as model species. The results showed that the 3D wood microfilter had a fast adsorption rate and high saturation capacity for both Cu2+ and Cd2+. Based on the advantages of easy processing and multilayer assembly and stacking, a three-layer wood microfilter was designed to achieve high flux rate (1.53 × 103 L m-2 h-1) and high efficiency (>98%) for the removal of heavy metal ions in water. The enhancement mechanism of the adsorption process of Cu2+ and Cd2+ by the 3D wood microfilter was investigated using SEM and EDS, FTIR, and XPS characterization. The simple synthesis method and high adsorption efficiency of this wood microfilter provide a new strategy for the preparation of cheap, efficient, and recyclable adsorbents for heavy metal ions in water.

Quantum Griffiths singularity (QGS) reveals the profound influence of quenched disorder on the quantum phase transitions, characterized by the divergence of the dynamical critical exponent at the boundary of the vortex glasslike phase, named as quantum Griffiths phase. However, in the absence of vortices, whether the QGS can exist under a parallel magnetic field remains a puzzle. Here, we study the magnetic field induced superconductor-metal transition in ultrathin crystalline PdTe_{2} films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Remarkably, the QGS emerges under both perpendicular and parallel magnetic field in four-monolayer PdTe_{2} films. The direct activated scaling analysis with a new irrelevant correction has been proposed, providing important evidence of QGS. With increasing film thickness to six monolayers, the QGS disappears under perpendicular field but persists under parallel field, and this discordance may originate from the differences in microscopic processes. Our work demonstrates the universality of parallel field induced QGS and can stimulate further investigations on novel quantum phase transitions under parallel magnetic field.

Auracyanin (Ac) is a blue copper protein that mediates the electron transfer between Alternative Complex III (ACIII) and downstream electron acceptors in both fort chains of filamentous anoxygenic phototrophs. Here, we extracted and purified the air-oxidized RfxAc from the photoheterotrophically grown Roseiflexus castenholzii, and we illustrated the structural basis underlying its electron transferring features. Spectroscopic and enzymatic analyses demonstrated the reduction of air-oxidized RfxAc by the ACIII upon oxidation of menaquinol-4 and menaquinol-7. Crystal structures of the air-oxidized and Na-dithionite-reduced RfxAc at 2.2 and 2.0 Å resolutions, respectively, showed that the copper ions are coordinated by His77, His146, Cys141, and Met151 in minor different geometries. The Cu1-Sδ bond length increase of Met151, and the electron density Fourier differences at Cu1 and His77 demonstrated their essential roles in the dithionite-induced reduction. Structural comparisons further revealed that the RfxAc contains a Chloroflexus aurantiacus Ac-A-like copper binding pocket and a hydrophobic patch surrounding the exposed edge of His146 imidazole, as well as an Ac-B-like Ser- and Thr-rich polar patch located at a different site on the surface. These spectroscopic and structural features allow RfxAc to mediate electron transfers between the ACIII and redox partners different from those of Ac-A and Ac-B. These results provide a structural basis for further investigating the electron transfer and energy transformation mechanism of bacterial photosynthesis, and the diversity and evolution of electron transport chains.

Here, a self-powered photodetector based on the monolayer MoS2/P-Si heterojunction with asymmetric electrodes was fabricated. The MoS2/p-Si heterojunction photodetector with asymmetric electrodes offers the advantages over the conventional heterojunction photodetector on optoelectronic applications in terms of strong built-in electric field and fast photogenerated carrier separation and transport. Significantly, the MoS2/P-Si heterojunction exhibited an obvious photovoltaic effect, which can be used as the self-powered photodetector operating without any bias voltage. At a voltage bias of 0 V, the photocurrent of the detector is 23 nA, and its photoresponse/recovery time is 84 ms/136 ms. When at bias, the detector shows a ratio of photocurrent to dark current up to 3120, high responsivity of 117 A W-1, and fast photoresponse/recovery time of 74 ms/115 ms. Our work illustrates the great potential of the MoS2/P-Si heterojunction device with asymmetric electrodes on photovoltaic applications.

In this work, the vertical electrical transport behavior of bilayer MoS2 under the coupling of force and light was explored by the use of conductive atomic force microscopy. We found that the current-voltage behavior across the tip-MoS2-Pt junction is a tunneling current that can be well fitted by a Simmons approximation. The transport behavior is direct tunneling at low bias and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling at high bias, and the transition voltage and tunnel barrier height are extracted. The effect of force and light on the effective band gap of the junction is investigated. Furthermore, the source-drain current drops surprisingly when we continually increase the force, and the dropping point is altered by the provided light. This mechanism is responsible for the tuning of tunneling barrier height and width by force and light. These results provide a new way to design devices that take advantage of ultrathin two-dimensional materials. Ultrashort channel length electronic components that possess tunneling current are important for establishing high-efficiency electronic and optoelectronic systems.

Tetrathiafulvalenes (TTFs) are a class of important functional materials whose intermolecular interaction, which will contribute to constructing a supramolecular structure, still needs further understanding. In this study, the self-assembly behavior and structure of a series of TTFs bearing different alkyl chains and substituents were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Contrary to previous reports, herein, a series of benzoic acid-functionalized TTFs (CnTTFCOOH) and pyridine-functionalized TTFs (CnTTFN) with different lengths of alkyl chains have been substituted on the sulfur atom, where n is equal to 8, 10, 14, or 16. Due to the weak intra- and intermolecular interactions, CnTTFN (n = 8 and 10) molecules cannot be observed during STM scanning. For other cases, various self-assembled monolayers with different nanostructures were observed depending on different substituents. The results reveal that the alkyl chains and functional groups on the TTF skeleton synergistically affect the molecular self-assembly process, which results from the synergism of van der Waals, hydrogen bonding, and SS interactions. These results not only help to explain the relationship between structures and properties, but also help to design better molecular structures for various fields.

Here surface potential of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown 2D MoS2 with various layers is reported, and the effect of adherent substrate and light illumination on surface potential of monolayer MoS2 are investigated. The surface potential of MoS2 on Si/SiO2 substrate decreases from 4.93 to 4.84 eV with the increase in the number of layer from 1 to 4 or more. Especially, the surface potentials of monolayer MoS2 are strongly dependent on its adherent substrate, which are determined to be 4.55, 4.88, 4.93, 5.10, and 5.50 eV on Ag, graphene, Si/SiO2 , Au, and Pt substrates, respectively. Light irradiation is introduced to tuning the surface potential of monolayer MoS2 , with the increase in light intensity, the surface potential of MoS2 on Si/SiO2 substrate decreases from 4.93 to 4.74 eV, while increases from 5.50 to 5.56 eV on Pt substrate. The I-V curves on vertical of monolayer MoS2 /Pt heterojunction show the decrease in current with the increase of light intensity, and Schottky barrier height at MoS2 /Pt junctions increases from 0.302 to 0.342 eV. The changed surface potential can be explained by trapped charges on surface, photoinduced carriers, charge transfer, and local electric field.

The CO2 -responsive and biocatalytic assembly based on conjugated polymers has been demonstrated by combining the signal amplification property of the polythiophene derivative (PTP) and the catalytic actions of carbonic anhydrase (CA). CO2 is applied as a new trigger mode to construct the smart assembly by controlling the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between the PTP molecules in aqueous solution, leading to the visible fluorescence changes. Importantly, the assembly transformation of PTP can be specifically and highly accelerated by CA based on the efficient catalytic activity of CA for the inter-conversion between CO2 and HCO3- , mimicking the CO2 -associated biological processes that occurred naturally in living organisms. Moreover, the PTP-based assembly can be applied for biomimetic CO2 sequestration with fluorescence monitoring in the presence of CA and calcium.

The gender-biased thymus involution and the importance of microRNAs (miRNAs, miRs) expression in modulating the thymus development have been reported in many studies. However, how males and females differ in so many ways in thymus involution remains unclear. To address this question, we investigated the miRNA expression profiles in both untreated 3- and 12-month-old female and male mice thymuses. The results showed that 7 and 18 miRNAs were defined as the sex- and age-specific miRNAs, respectively. The expression of miR-181c-5p, miR-20b-5p, miR-98b-5p, miR-329-3p, miR-341-5p, and miR-2137 showed significant age-difference in mice thymus by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. High expression levels of miR-2137 were detected in mice thymic epithelial cells and gradually increased during the process of thymus aging. MiR-27b-3p and miR-378a-3p of the female-biased miRNAs were confirmed as the sex- and estrogen-responsive miRNAs in mice thymus in vivo. Their potential target genes and the pathway were identified by the online software. Possible regulation roles of sex- and age-specific miRNA expression during the process of thymus aging were discussed. Our results suggested that these miRNAs may be potential biomarkers for the study of sex- and age-specific thymus aging and involution.

Detection of carbon dioxide (CO2) is of fundamental importance in diverse applications ranging from environmental analysis to agricultural production. In this work, a hybrid probe based on guanidinium-pendent oligofluorene (G-OF) and water-soluble conjugated polythiophene (PTP) has been developed for the turn on detection of CO2 with low background signal, taking advantage of the efficient fluorescence quenching of the tight aggregate of G-OF/PTP. In the presence of CO2, the electrostatic repulsion between G-OF and PTP can be effectively enhanced through protonation of the side chains, leading to the disaggregation and thus the "turn-on" fluorescence. The strategy allows for the light-up visible detection of CO2 with high sensitivity. Importantly, this system is capable of sensitively monitoring the concentration changes of CO2 in the process of the photosynthesis, which represents a concept to monitor the photosynthesis based on water-soluble conjugated polymers.

The expression profiles of miRNAs in thymus tissues from mice of different age have been demonstrated in our previous study. After an integrated analysis of the miRNA expression profiles, we demonstrated that the expression of miR-181a-5p was significantly decreased in thymic epithelial cells (TECs) from 10- to 19-month-old mice when compared with that in TECs from 1-month-old mice by quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. We hypothesized that miR-181a-5p in TECs might be associated with the age-related thymus involution through regulating some genes or signaling pathway. To test this hypothesis, the mouse medullary thymic epithelial cells (MTEC1) were used. Transfection with miR-181a-5p mimic promoted the proliferation of MTEC1 cells, but did not affect apoptosis. The effect was reversed when the expression of miR-181a-5p was suppressed in MTEC1 cells. Furthermore, the transforming growth factor beta receptor I (Tgfbr1) was confirmed as a direct target of miR-181a-5p by luciferase assay. Moreover, it was found that overexpression of miR-181a-5p down-regulated the phosphorylation of Smad3 and blocked the activation of the transforming growth factor beta signaling. Nevertheless, an inversely correlation was observed between the expression of Tgfbr1 and miR-181a-5p in TECs derived from mice of different age. Collectively, we provide evidence that miR-181a-5p may be an important endogenous regulator in the proliferation of TECs, and the expression levels of miR-181a-5p in TECs may be associated with the age-related thymus involution.

MicroRNAs are highly conserved non-coding small RNAs participating in almost all kinds of biological activities. MiR-181a has been reported to be involved in the differentiation of porcine primary preadipocytes, but the profound effect of miR-181a-5p on 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation and proliferation is still unclear. In this study, we found that supplementation of miR-181a-5p in 3T3-L1 cells significantly promoted the adipogenesis and inhibited cell proliferation with increased expression of adipogenic marker genes including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (Pparγ), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha (C/ebpα), fatty acid-binding protein 4 (Fabp4), and Adiponectin, accompanied by an accumulation of lipid droplet, an increase of triglyceride content, and a decrease of cell proliferation. Furthermore, by using the luciferase assay, Smad7 and Tcf7l2, two important members of transforming growth factor-ß (TGFß) and Wnt signaling pathway, were proven to be the direct target genes of miR-181a-5p. Moreover, supplementation of miR-181a-5p in 3T3-L1 cells altered the expressions of proteins involved in the TGFß signaling pathway, such as TGFBR1, p-SMAD3, SMAD4, c-MYC, and p15. Taken together, these results indicate that miR-181a-5p promotes 3T3-L1 preadipocyte differentiation and adipogenesis through regulating TGFß/Smad and Wnt signaling pathway by directly targeting Smad7 and Tcf7l2.

MiR-195 has been implicated in inhibiting cell proliferation in different types of tumors. Whether it contributes to the process of thymic epithelial cells (TECs) proliferation remains unclear. In this study, we found that miR-195a-5p was highly up-regulated in the TECs isolated from the aging mice. Further experiments showed that miR-195a-5p mimic transfection inhibited the proliferation of mouse medullary thymic epithelial cell line 1 (MTEC1), whereas the transfection of miR-195a-5p inhibitor in MTEC1 had the opposite effect. In addition, miR-195a-5p had no obvious effect on MTEC1 apoptosis. Furthermore, Smad7, a negative regulator of transforming growth factor ß pathway, was confirmed as a direct target of miR-195a-5p by luciferase assays. Taken together, our results indicate that miR-195a-5p inhibits MTEC1 proliferation, at least in part, via down-regulation of Smad7.

Previous evidence has indicated that the microRNA-125b (miR-125b) family plays important roles in the regulation of cancer cell growth, development, differentiation, and apoptosis. However, whether they contribute to the process of adipocyte differentiation remains unclear. In the present study, we revealed that the expression level of miR-125b-5p, a member of miR-125b family, was dramatically up-regulated during differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocyte into mature adipocyte. Supplement of miR-125b-5p into 3T3-L1 cells promoted adipogenic differentiation as evidenced by increased lipid droplets and mRNA levels of adipocyte-specific molecular markers, including peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor γ, CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α, fatty acid-binding protein 4, and lipoprotein lipase, and by triglyceride accumulation. CCK-8 assay showed that miR-125b-5p supplementation significantly inhibited cell proliferation. Flow cytometry analysis showed that miR-125b-5p impaired G1/S phase transition as well as the mRNA and protein expression of G1/S-related genes, such as Cyclin D2, Cyclin D3, and CDK4. Nevertheless, it had no effect on apoptosis. Additionally, by target gene prediction, we demonstrated that smad4 may be a potential target of miR-125b-5p in mouse 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, accounting for some of miR-125b-5p's functions. Taken together, these data indicated that miR-125b-5p may serve as an important positive regulator in adipocyte differentiation, at least partially through down-regulating smad4.

Arginine has been widely applied in the food industry as coloring agents, flavoring agents, and nutritional fortifiers. It is also one of the major components of feed additives. Currently, methods for the highly selective detection of arginine remain absent. For accurate and sensitive detection of L-arginine, a novel ratiometric fluorescence assay based on Ru@UiO-66-NH2 was developed and demonstrated in this study. Under optimized detection conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) of this assay for L-arginine was 2.32 µM, which is superior to most assays reported to date. Meanwhile, Ru@UiO-66-NH2 showed good stability within 30 days, demonstrating the wide applicability of the proposed assay. The spike-and-recovery rates of the proposed assay for L-arginine in real samples (e.g., tea, grape juice, and serum) were 84.27-113.09%. Overall, the proposed assay showed high sensitivity, good reproducibility, and excellent stability in the detection of L-arginine in both buffer and real samples.
