RESUMEN

Plant-based diets are a great source of protease inhibitors (PIs). Two of the most well-known families of PIs are Bowman-Birk inhibitors (BBI) and Kunitz-type inhibitors (KTI). The first group acts mainly on trypsin, chymotrypsin, and elastase; the second is on serine, cysteine, and aspartic proteases. PIs can retard or inhibit the catalytic action of enzymes; therefore, they are considered non-nutritional compounds; nevertheless, animal studies and cell line experiments showed promising results of PIs in treating human illnesses such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, inflammatory processes, and different types of cancer (gastric, colorectal, breast, and lung cancer). Anticarcinogenic activity's proposed mechanisms of action comprise several inhibitory effects at different molecular levels, i.e., transcription, post-transcription, translation, post-translation, and secretion of cancer cells. This work reviews the potential therapeutic applications of PIs as anticarcinogenic and anti-inflammatory agents in human diseases and the mechanisms by which they exert these effects.

RESUMEN

The loss of a child is considered one of the most tragic experiences that parents can go through. The present systematic review aims to compile the most recently published interventions in bereavement support for these parents, being particularly interested in those made from a meaning-centered approach. The search for the units of analysis was guided by the standards of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) Statement and was entered in Web of Science, Scopus and EBSCO, obtaining a total of 485 papers of which 21 have been included in this article. The results found are heterogeneous in terms of the type of intervention used and results, but they all seem to have something in common: the lack of research and reliable interventions that exist for this population. With this systematic review we intend to achieve a better understanding of these parents' needs and to highlight the enormous work that still remains ahead in order to make their bereavement experience a little less devastating.

BACKGROUND: Children's consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with obesity, diabetes, and dental decay. California's Healthy Beverages in Child Care Act (AB 2084) requires all licensed child care centers and family child care homes to comply with healthy beverages standards, however many licensed providers in California are unaware of the law and few are fully compliant with the law's requirements. The aim of the current project is to describe the development of a self-paced online training on best practices and implementation of AB 2084 in English and Spanish for family child care home and child care center providers; and to evaluate the feasibility, defined as being accessible, acceptable, and satisfactory to providers, of this new online course. METHODS: The project was broken into two main stages: (1) development of the online course; and (2) evaluation of the final online course. The first stage was completed in five phases: (1) identify relevant course content and develop narration script; (2) conduct in-person focus groups with child care providers to review and edit the content; (3) adapt course content and translate for Spanish-speaking providers; (4) build the online course and resources; and (5) pilot online course and evaluate accessibility. The second stage, evaluation of the acceptability and satisfaction of the final course was rated on a Likert scale from 1 to 4; the evaluation was completed as part of a larger randomized control trial with 43 child care providers. The course features four key requirements of AB 2084 as the main sections of the course (milk, sweetened beverages, juice, and water), plus background information about beverages and children's health, special topics including caring for children with special needs, family engagement, written policies, and child engagement. RESULTS: The child care providers who completed the evaluation found the online training was easily understandable (median(Q1,Q3,IQR) = 4 (4,4,0)), included new information (3 (1, 3, 4)), provided useful resources (4(4,4,0)), and was rated with high overall satisfaction (3 (1, 3, 4)). CONCLUSION: Online training in English and Spanish designed for child care providers is a feasible medium to deliver important health messages to child care providers in an accessible, acceptable, and satisfactory manner.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the mediating effect of direct preschool and parent nutrition education on changes in skin carotenoids scores over 2 years in children of Mexican heritage. DESIGN: In a quasi-experimental, community-based study, two school districts were randomly assigned to either a comparison group (parent workshops unrelated to nutrition) or a childhood obesity prevention intervention group which included nutrition education at family nights for parents and at school for children. Changes in skin carotenoid intensity scores (diffCAROT, year 2015 minus 2013) were measured in children as a proxy for fruit and vegetable consumption using Resonance Raman Spectroscopy. SETTING: Two rural, low-income, school districts from a county in California's Central Valley. PARTICIPANTS: 316 Mexican heritage families with children aged 3-8 years. RESULTS: Intervention group children improved over 2 years in skin carotenoid scores relative to comparison group children (diffCAROT mean +1419 (sd 9540) v. -3473 (sd 9272), P = 0·0001). Parent attendance at nutrition education classes partially mediated the intervention effect on diffCAROT (P = 0·02). Controlling for child's age and other covariates, participation in preschool during the study had a significant positive effect on diffCAROT among intervention children compared with controls (P < 0·03), whereas no significant difference by group was observed among those not enrolled in preschool or already enrolled in elementary school. CONCLUSIONS: Programmes that combine direct parent and preschool nutrition education may be effective in low-income Mexican heritage families to improve children's intake of fruit and vegetables.

RESUMEN

The increase of the elderly population with a significant load of non-communicable diseases, accelerates pathological aging and increases the risk of dementia, generating a huge health, social and economic cost for any country. Dementia does not have an effective treatment yet, therefore, the focus must remain on prevention and early diagnosis. The early stages of dementia are known as mild cognitive impairment; at this stage is still possible to mitigate the progression of the disease, however, health systems worldwide face difficulties to provide universal access to health services, due to a lack of specialists and geographical distances, interfering with the access to healthcare centers. In this scenario, WHO urged countries to implement strategies to democratize and to expand the reach of health institutions. In this document, we briefly review the global and local situation of dementias and discuss some attempts to control their progression by using revolutionary digital tools. We believe the focus should be on the population that is just beginning to show cognitive impairment.

Jatropha curcas seeds are an important source of oil (5-60%), used to obtain biodiesel. The generated residual paste has a high concentration of proteins (50-55%); however, the seeds contain non-nutritional factors that limit their use. The objective of this work was to analyze the effect on the physicochemical properties of the oil obtained from J. curcas seeds subjected to different thermal treatments and to evaluate the biological quality of the proteins contained in the residual cake. The best extraction of oil (95%) was obtained after 10 h from roasted or boiled seeds. In the oil from roasted samples, the acid index increased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) with respect to the untreated sample, whereas the iodine index increased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) in the oil extracted from the boiled samples. With respect to the proximal chemical composition of the flour, roasting and boiling treatments allowed for greater oil extraction (97 and 92%), achieving, in turn, a higher content of proteins (59.56 and 58.5 g/100 g) and fiber (6.67 and 6.67 g/100 g), and lower activity of trypsin inhibitors (45 and 38%) and phytates (63 and 72%), respectively. According to the in vivo biological quality test, conducted on Wistar rats, the thermal treatments applied to the seeds improved digestibility (> 70%) and the protein efficiency index (PER). The thermal treatment allowed extracting more efficiently the oil and improved the quality of the proteins present in the residual paste.

RESUMEN

We report a device that acts as an active Q-switch and a quasi-phase-matching structure. It is a domain-structured LiNbO3 crystal, where the Q-switching is performed by electro-optic deflection and the wavelength conversion is produced by quasi-phase-matched optical parametric generation. By introducing this device into a diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser we obtained pulses at 1064 nm (~10 ns FWHM, 195 µJ) and 1617 nm (~3 ns, 15 µJ).

We present a device, similar to a Shack-Hartmann sensor, that can detect both the intensity distribution and wavefront of an incident wave. Its operation is based on the use of an array of electrically controllable Fresnel zone plates made in a ferroelectric crystal, lithium niobate. This sensor, which requires only one camera, can be quickly switched between intensity- and phase-detecting modes. Two kinds of arrays are shown: Fresnel zone plates with a few ring-shaped ferroelectric domains and plates made with nested hexagonal domains. Both arrays are suitable for use in a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. However, since in lithium niobate domains naturally tend to form hexagons, it is easier to make hexagonal, rather than ring-shaped, domains and, consequently, smaller zone plates can be produced. This allows an increase in the number of zone plates and a reduction in their focal length, which improves the fidelity of the reconstructed wavefront.

The aim of this study was to test the reliability of a method to measure the masticatory performance of complete denture wearers employing a colour-mixing ability test and assessment by visual and electronic colourimetric analysis. A sample of 75 subjects was selected from patients who received new conventional complete dentures. Masticatory tests were performed using a two-colour chewing gum that was masticated for 5, 10, 20, 30 and 50 chewing cycles, performed in a random order. The mixing level of the two colours of the chewed gum was assessed visually by two independent raters based on a 5-point ordinal scale. The specimens were flattened into a 1-mm-width wafer, scanned and saved as a two-sided digital image. Each pair of images was submitted to an electronic colourimetric analysis to assess the level of colour mixture, measured by the circular variance of hue (VOH). Overall inter- and intra-rater agreements in visual analysis were 64% and 68%, respectively (almost 99% of scores ranged within ±1 point), whilst overall weighted kappa was >0.80. A proportional increase in the level of mixture occurred with increased number of chewing cycles (P < .001). Similarly, VOH and the visual analysis were highly correlated (r = -.89; P < .001). Bland-Altman plots revealed excellent agreement and extremely low systematic error between duplicated VOH measures. It was concluded that the two-colour chewing gum test is a reliable method to assess the masticatory performance in complete denture wearers using both visual and electronic colourimetric analyses.

Determining the factors associated with NCCLs and DH in populations could guide the implementation of specific preventive measures. This study evaluated the clinical features and factors associated with non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) and dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in a Brazilian population. The participants were 118 patients at the Dentistry Clinic of our dental school. They completed an interview to obtain personal information and determine the possible factors associated with NCCLs and DH. Clinical examination was undertaken to record the NCCLs, shape of the lesion and certain occlusal factors. DH was diagnosed by air and probe tests. Data were analysed with the multilevel Poisson regression and prevalence ratios, and the respective 95% confidence intervals were calculated. The prevalence of NCCLs and DH among patients was 67·8% and 51·7%, respectively. Of a total number of 2902 teeth examined, 9·65% had NCCLs and 5·82% were sensitive to air. The most affected teeth for both conditions were the premolars. Most of the NCCLs were wedge-shaped and located in the maxilla. The factors associated with NCCLs and DH were age and presence of premature occlusal contacts. NCCLs were also significantly associated with consumption of wine and alcoholic beverages, and DH with consumption of acidic fruits and juices. NCCLs were a common finding, with higher frequency in more advanced age groups, the maxilla and premolars. A significant association occurred between NCCLs, premature contacts and consumption of wine and alcoholic beverages. DH was associated with NCCLs, premature contacts and with the consumption of acidic fruits and juices.

AIMS: To isolate, characterize and determine the antibacterial activities of compounds produced by the endophytic fungus Diaporthe sp. F2934, cultivated on malt extract agar. METHODS AND RESULTS: The fungus was cultivated aseptically in Petri dishes containing malt extract agar at 25°C for 15 days. Crude extract was obtained from mycelium using ethyl acetate and sonication, and was fractioned using classic chromatography and HPLC. The structures of phomosines and chromanones were established by NMR experiments including HMQC, HMBC and COSY. Their molecular formulas were determined by ESI-TOFMS. We obtained six compounds: (1) 4H-1-benzopyra-4-one-2,3-dihydro-5-hydroxy-2,8-dimetyl, (2) 4H-1-benzopyran-4-one-2,3-dihydro-5-hydroxy-8-(hydroxylmethyl)-2-methyl, (3) 4H-1-benzopyra-4-one-2,3-dihydro-5-methoxyl-2,8-dimetyl, (4) phomosine A, (5) phomosine D and (6) phomosine C. Isolated compounds 1, 2 and 5 were inactive against 15 micro-organisms, but phomosines A and C were active against diverse Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. CONCLUSIONS: A group of new chromanones and known phomosines have been isolated from the genus Diaporthe (Diaporthe sp. F2934). The results obtained confirm the wide chemical diversity produced by endophytic fungi, specifically the genus Diaporthe. In addition, phomosines A and C may be considered as antimicrobial agents that can be used to guide the development of new antibiotics. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Our phylogenetic analysis places Diaporthe sp. F2934 as sister to the Diaporthe cynaroidis clade. Three chromanones were isolated and identified, for the first time, using crude extract obtained from Diaporthe F2934. From this extract phomosines A, C and D were also purified. Regarding Staphylococcus aureus, the inhibition zone diameter (IZD) for phomosine A was 20% higher than the standard drug, vancomycin. When cultivated as described here, Diaporthe sp. F2934 produced new and antimicrobial compounds.

UNLABELLED: In screening for natural products with antiparasitic activity, an endophytic fungus, strain F2611, isolated from above-ground tissue of the tropical grass Paspalum conjugatum (Poaceae) in Panama, was chosen for bioactive principle elucidation. Cultivation on malt extract agar (MEA) followed by bioassay-guided chromatographic fractionation of the extract led to the isolation of the new polyketide integrasone B (1) and two known mycotoxins, sterigmatocystin (2) and secosterigmatocystin (3). Sterigmatocystin (2) was found to be the main antiparasitic compound in the fermentation extract of this fungus, possessing potent and selective antiparasitic activity against Trypanosoma cruzi, the cause of Chagas disease, with an IC50 value of 0.13 µmol l(-1) . Compounds 2 and 3 showed high cytotoxicity against Vero cells (IC50 of 0.06 and 0.97 µmol l(-1) , respectively). The new natural product integrasone B (1), which was co-purified from the active fractions, constitutes the second report of a natural product possessing an epoxyquinone with a lactone ring and exhibited no significant biological activity. Strain F2611 represents a previously undescribed taxon within the Microthyriaceae (Dothideomycetes, Ascomycota). SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The present study attributes new antiparasitic and psychoactive biological activities to sterigmatocystin (2), and describes the structure elucidation of the new natural product integrasone B (1), which possesses a rare epoxyquinone with a lactone ring moiety. This is also the first report of sterigmatocystin (2) isolation in a fungal strain from this family, broadening the taxonomic range of sterigmatocystin-producing fungi. The study also presents taxonomic analyses indicating that strain F2611 is strongly supported as a member of the Microthyriaceae (Ascomycota), but is not a member of any previously known or sequenced genus.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity disproportionately affects low-income, racially marginalized, and rural communities. The COVID-19 pandemic led to higher demand for emergency food distribution, potentially impacting food pantry operations and services. Limited research exists assessing consumer nutrition environments of pantries in rural regions. OBJECTIVES: To assess the consumer nutrition environment of rural food pantries and report challenges and adaptations encountered during the pandemic. DESIGN: A mixed-methods, cross-sectional survey. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Nineteen food pantry representatives from California's San Joaquin Valley were surveyed between August 2020 and June 2021. Representatives were eligible if their pantry served the general population and was open at least once a week. Nine were church-based pantries, and 10 were from other settings. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The Nutrition Environment Food Pantry Assessment Tool (NEFPAT) measured the nutrition food environment and scored pantries as bronze (0-15), silver (16-31), or gold (32-47) categories. Eleven items were developed to explore pandemic-related challenges. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Independent χ2 tests assessed the relationship between the organization type and NEFPAT scores and food supply sources. Fisher's exact test explored associations between food pantry type, NEFPAT category, and challenges. Nonparametric tests were run on non-normally distributed data. Inductive content analysis was used to examine open-ended pandemic-related questions. RESULTS: The nutrition environment of most pantries was suboptimal, because no pantry scored in the "gold" category based on total NEFPAT scores (median, 18 of 47). No statistically significant differences were found in the NEFPAT scores by organization type. Most pantries did not provide healthy food nudges or culturally diverse foods. Key COVID-19 challenges encountered consisted of supply- and demand-side issues, including reduced personnel, capacity, and resources, and increased client quantity and demand for food. CONCLUSIONS: Assessing the nutrition environment of rural food pantries revealed gaps and strategies for improvement, including the use of healthy nudges and increasing the availability of culturally diverse foods.

This paper employs a systematic review to examine the correlation between anhedonia and marijuana use, exploring whether individuals with anhedonia use marijuana as a coping mechanism or if marijuana use plays a role in the onset of anhedonia. The search utilised PubMed and Web of Science databases, following PRISMA guidelines for paper selection. A total of 21 papers were selected to address this inquiry, and assessments were carried out using the Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies of Exposures (ROBINS-E) tool. The results revealed that 17 studies exhibited moderate and low risk of bias. The evaluation encompassed a total of 12,427 participants, including both animals and humans. Experimental animal studies focused on exploring the association between cannabidiol (CBD) and anhedonia, while human studies primarily employed observational research, examining various forms of anhedonia in individuals with or without mental disorders such as depression or psychosis. These studies also delved into understanding the effects of anhedonia during adolescence and explored the causal relationship between these concepts. The findings indicate a reciprocal rather than unidirectional relationship, establishing that initial anhedonia predisposes individuals to cannabis use, and subsequent consumption significantly intensifies the anhedonia experienced. Particularly, the studies placed special emphasis on adolescents and individuals with mental disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Spanish National Cutaneous Melanoma Registry (Registro Nacional de Melanoma Cutáneo [RNMC]) was created in 1997 to record the characteristics of melanoma at diagnosis. In this article, we describe the characteristics of these tumors at diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional observational study of prevalent and incident cases of melanoma for which initial biopsy results were available in the population-based RNMC. RESULTS: The RNMC contains information on 14,039 patients. We analyzed the characteristics of 13,628 melanomas diagnosed between 1997 and 2011. In total, 56.5% of the patients studied were women and 43.5% were men. The mean age of the group was 57 years (95% CI, 56.4-57 years) while median age was 58 years. The most common tumor site was the trunk (37.1%), followed by the lower limbs (27.3%). The most frequent clinical-pathologic subtype was superficial spreading melanoma (n=7481, 62.6%), followed by nodular melanoma (n=2014, 16.8%). Localized disease was observed in 86.2% of cases (n=10,382), regional metastasis in 9.9% (n=1188), and distant metastasis in 3.9% (n=479). Independently of age at diagnosis, men had thicker tumors, more ulceration, higher lactate dehydrogenase levels, and a higher rate of metastasis than women (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: Based on our findings, melanoma prevention campaigns should primarily target men over 50 years old because they tend to develop thicker tumors and therefore have a worse prognosis.

Background: Accurate measurement of food-related parenting practices is necessary to inform related interventions and program evaluation. Valid tools reflect cultural attributes that affect household food environments and feeding practices. Simple, unidirectional language adaptation approaches are insufficient to capture these attributes in assessment tools. My Child at Mealtime (MCMT) is a 27-item, validated, visually enhanced self-assessment tool to measure food-related parenting practices of low-income English-speaking parents of preschoolers. Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the cross-cultural adaptation of MCMT into its Spanish version Mi Niño a la Hora the Comer (Mi Niño) and to establish its face validity, factor structure, and internal consistency. Methods: MCMT was adapted into its Spanish version after an iterative process that triangulated cognitive interviews with verification of conceptual equivalence by content experts to establish face validity and semantic equivalence. The resulting tool underwent confirmatory factor analysis to determine whether internal consistency was equivalent across the 2 versions. Results: Four rounds of cognitive interviews (n = 5, n = 6, n = 2, and n = 4, respectively) with Spanish-speaking women caregivers of children aged 3-5 y recruited from Head Start were conducted. Ten items were modified throughout the adaptation process. Modifications included improved clarity (6 items), comprehension (7 items), appropriateness (4 items), suitability (4 items), and usefulness (2 items) of text and/or accompanying visuals. Confirmatory factor analysis with a sample of Spanish-speaking caregivers (n = 243) resulted in 2 reliable factors representing "child-centered" (α = 0.82) and "parent-centered" (α = 0.87) food-related parenting practices. Conclusions: Face validity, semantic equivalence, and internal consistency of Mi Niño were established. This tool can be used in community settings to inform program content and measure changes in food-related parenting practices of Spanish-speaking parents and assist in setting food-related parenting goals. The next steps include exploring the correspondence of Mi Nino with mealtime behaviors observed through video recording.

The aim of this systematic review was to determine the most prevalent complications resulting from total temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacement. An electronic search was performed using the Embase, LILACS, MEDLINE (via PubMed), SciELO, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to June 2022. Prospective and retrospective clinical studies on patients who underwent TMJ replacement were included. Two reviewers performed the study selection, data extraction, and individual risk of bias assessment using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tools. The pooled prevalence of each complication was calculated through a proportion meta-analysis using the random-effects model. Twenty-eight studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. All of the eligible studies had a low risk of bias. The results of the meta-analysis revealed that the most prevalent complication was paresis or paralysis of the facial nerve branches (7.8%; 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.6-15.1%, I2 = 94.5%), followed by sensory alterations (1.8%; 95% CI 0.6-4.9%, I2 = 88.8%), heterotopic bone formation (1.0%; 95% CI 0.1-2.5%, I2 = 75.8%), and infection (0.7%; 95% CI 0.1-1.6%, I2 = 22.7%). In conclusion, TMJ replacement has a low prevalence of complications, and most of them can be managed successfully.

The purpose is to examine validity and reliability for an obesity risk assessment tool developed in Spanish for immigrant families with children, 3-5 years old using an 8-week cross-sectional design with data collected over 1 year at Head Start and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children [WIC]. Parent/child dyads (206) provided a child obesity risk assessment, three child modified 24 h dietary recalls, three child 36+ h activity logs and one parent food behavior checklist. Main outcome measures were convergent validity with nutrients, cup equivalents, and diet quality and three assessments of reliability that included item difficulty index, item discrimination index, and coefficient of variation. Validity was demonstrated for assessment tool, named Niños Sanos. Scales were significantly related to variables in direction hypothesized [p ≤ 0.05]: Healthy Eating Index, fruit/vegetable cup equivalents, folate, dairy cup equivalents, vitamins D, ß-carotene, fiber, saturated fat, sugar, time at screen/ sleep/physical activity and parent behaviors. Three measures of reliability were acceptable. The addition of nutrient values as an analytical validation approach adds strength and consistency to previously reported Niños Sanos validation results using children's blood biomarkers and body mass index. This tool can be used by health professionals as an assessment of obesity risk in several capacities: (1) screener for counseling in a clinic, (2) large survey, (3) guide for participant goal setting and tailoring interventions, and (4) evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain is one of the leading causes of disability globally, with a high economic and social burden. A decrease or imbalance in trunk strength has been associated with the occurrence of low back pain and its severity. Trunk strength training is helpful in the treatment of Non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) patients. However, we do not know the effects of trunk isokinetic training (IKT) on pain intensity, disability, and trunk strength. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to determine the effects of trunk IKT in NSLBP patients on pain intensity, disability, and trunk flexor and extensor isokinetic strength. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, CENTRAL, and PEDro, from January 2001 until March 2021 and updated to November 2022. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the effect of IKT in adult participants with NSLBP on pain intensity, disability, or isokinetic trunk strength were included. Mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated for pain. Bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias (RoB) tool and evidence certainty via Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). RESULTS: Among 1750 retrieved articles, eight were included in this review. Meta-analysis comparing IKT (trunk isokinetic training, n= 134) with control groups (conventional exercises, n= 133) revealed that IKT decreases pain intensity (MD -1.50 (95% CI: -2.60; -0.39)) immediately post-intervention, and one month (MD -1.97 (95% CI: -2.92; -1.03)) and at six months follow-up (MD -2.48 (95% CI: -2.77; -2.19)), although with a very low to low quality according to the GRADE rating. Besides, IKT decreases disability and increases isokinetic trunk strength, but with scant evidence. CONCLUSIONS: Trunk IKT could be a novel clinical tool for pain management in patients with NSLBP, although evidence is scarce. In addition, few RCTs exist for IKT on disability or trunk isokinetic strength in patients with NSLBP. Therefore, further research on this topic is needed.

Among thirty four endophytic fungal strains screened for in vitro antagonism, the endophytic fungus Cordyceps dipterigena was found to strongly inhibit mycelial growth of the plant pathogenic fungus Gibberella fujikuroi. Two new depsidone metabolites, cordycepsidone A (1) and cordycepsidone B (2), were isolated from the PDA culture extract of C. dipterigena and identified as being responsible for the antifungal activity. Elucidation of their chemical structures was carried out using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy in combination with IR and MS spectroscopic data. Cordycepsidone A displayed strong and dose-dependent antifungal activity against the plant pathogenic fungus Gibberella fujikuroi. The isolates were inactive in bioassays for malaria (Plasmodium falciparum), leishmaniasis (Leishmania donovani), Chagas's disease (Trypanosoma cruzi), and cytotoxicity at 10 µg/mL. The compounds were also found to be inactive against several bacterial strains at 50 µg/mL.
