RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Current national severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination policy covers children aged >12 years. Unvaccinated, uninfected children remain susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 and play a role in community transmission, as paediatric infection is mostly mild or asymptomatic. To estimate the proportion of susceptible children in a community for public health measures, there is a need to assess the extent of natural infection. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a cross-sectional household serosurvey of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in unvaccinated children aged between 6 and 18 years after the second COVID-19 wave. METHODS: Anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobin G (IgG) testing in serum was done using chemiluminescence immunoassay. We used a logistic regression model to investigate predicted factors of seropositivity. RESULTS: We observed a high prevalence (weighted average: 68.3%) of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG in 2700 enrolled children. Logistic regression for predictors of IgG seropositivity showed lower odds in households with completely vaccinated adults (adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 0.43, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.26-0.71, P = 0.0011) compared with households with unvaccinated adults. Other factors for low seropositivity included frontline workers as family members (adjusted OR: 0.69, 95% CI: 0.52-0.91, P = 0.0091) and non-crowded households (adjusted OR: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.61-0.89, P = 0.0019). CONCLUSION: A high SARS-CoV-2 IgG prevalence in unvaccinated children was indicative of previous exposure to potentially infected contacts. This implies in-person academic activities for children can be continued during future community transmission. Comparatively lower seropositivity in children of completely vaccinated households or frontline workers suggests decreased transmission due to vaccination-induced immunity of family members. Vaccination will still be required in these children to maintain protective IgG levels, particularly in low seroprevalence groups.

RESUMEN

In this work, we develop a photocatalyst wherein nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon quantum dots are scaffolded onto TiO2 nanoparticles (NPCQD/TiO2), denoted as NPCT hereafter. The developed NPCT photocatalyst exhibits an enhanced visible light photocatalytic hydrogen production of 533 µmol h-1 g-1 compared to nitrogen doped CQD/TiO2 (478 µmol h-1 g-1), phosphorus doped CQD/TiO2 (451 µmol h-1 g-1) and pure CQD/TiO2 (427 µmol h-1 g-1) photocatalysts. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the NPCT photocatalyst is attributed to the excellent synergy between NPCQDs and TiO2 nanoparticles, which results in the creation of virtual energy levels, a decrease in work function and suppressed recombination rates, thereby increasing the lifetime of photogenerated electrons. A detailed mechanism is proposed for the enhancement in visible light hydrogen production by the NPCT photocatalyst from the experimental results, Mott-Schottky plots and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy results. Further, first-principles density functional theory (DFT) simulations are carried out which predict the decrease in the work function and band gap, and the increase in the density of states of NPCT as the factors responsible for the observed enhancement in visible light photocatalytic hydrogen production.

OBJECTIVE: Clozapine use is associated with myocarditis. In this study, we investigated what clinical signs and symptoms, and/or laboratory test(s), alert clinicians to presumptive myocarditis (PrMy) most accurately and at the earliest time point. We also investigated the incidence of PrMy during the initial exposure to clozapine versus in patients restarted on clozapine after extended interruption of prior prolonged treatment. METHODS: 100 patients admitted to state psychiatric hospital started on clozapine were recruited into the study. 76 patients were treated with clozapine for the first time and 24 patients were restarts. Creatine kinase (CK), troponin I (TROP), eosinophil count (EOS), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were obtained at baseline and weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4. Descriptive statistics were calculated for demographic and clinical variables. Student's t test and chi-squared test were used to compare means and proportions between initial exposure and restart groups. RESULTS: Clinical features and laboratory tests suggestive of PrMy were seen in 4 patients (5.3%) in initial exposure group and none in restart group. 3.5% of TROP levels were abnormal in initial exposure group and no abnormal levels were found in the restart group. 30% and 46% of CK, 23% and 39% of CRP, and 14% and 23% of EOS were abnormal in initial exposure group and restart groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: PrMy was common (5.3%) during clozapine initiation. Prospective management through serial laboratory monitoring with weekly TROP levels was sensitive enough to allow for timely clozapine discontinuation.

AIM: To investigate whether the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions on the incidence of diabetes was influenced by the baseline age and BMI of the Asian-Indian participants with prediabetes. METHODS: Pooled data, obtained from two of our Indian Diabetes Prevention Programmes (2006, n=236 and 2013, n=473; total N=709) which had similar baseline characteristics and intervention principles, were analysed. For the present secondary analysis we dichotomously categorized the participants' baseline age (<45 and ≥45 years) and BMI (<25.0 and ≥ 25.0 kg/m2 ). Glycaemic status was ascertained at 6-monthly intervals by oral glucose tolerance tests. The incidence rates of diabetes and relative risk reduction in both the intervention and the control group were calculated for categories of baseline age and BMI. Interactions between the intervention and baseline age and BMI on diabetes risk were also analysed. RESULTS: Incident diabetes was diagnosed in 227 of the total 709 participants (32.0%) [control group 139 participants (38.8%) vs intervention group 88 participants (24.2%)] during the median follow-up period of 2 years. The overall relative risk reduction was 35.4% (95% CI 19.3-48.3). Lifestyle intervention was equally effective in both age groups [relative risk reduction in those aged <45 years: 43.7% (95% CI 19.8-60.5) and in those aged ≥ 45 years: 28.9% (95% CI 5.3-46.6) P for interaction = 0.52] and in categories of BMI [BMI <25 kg/m2 : 36.1% (95% CI 9.5-54.9); and BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 : 34.8% (95% CI 12.9-51.2); P for interaction = 0.95]. CONCLUSIONS: In Asian-Indian individuals with prediabetes, the effectiveness of lifestyle intervention was not modified by baseline age and BMI.

Establishing reliable methods for the identification of benthic chironomid communities is important due to their significant contribution to biomass, ecology and the aquatic food web. Immature larval specimens are more difficult to identify to species level by traditional morphological methods than their fully developed adult counterparts, and few keys are available to identify the larval species. In order to develop molecular criteria to identify species of chironomid larvae, larval and adult chironomids from Western Lake Erie were subjected to both molecular and morphological taxonomic analysis. Mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) barcode sequences of 33 adults that were identified to species level by morphological methods were grouped with COI sequences of 189 larvae in a neighbor-joining taxon-ID tree. Most of these larvae could be identified only to genus level by morphological taxonomy (only 22 of the 189 sequenced larvae could be identified to species level). The taxon-ID tree of larval sequences had 45 operational taxonomic units (OTUs, defined as clusters with >97% identity or individual sequences differing from nearest neighbors by >3%; supported by analysis of all larval pairwise differences), of which seven could be identified to species or 'species group' level by larval morphology. Reference sequences from the GenBank and BOLD databases assigned six larval OTUs with presumptive species level identifications and confirmed one previously assigned species level identification. Sequences from morphologically identified adults in the present study grouped with and further classified the identity of 13 larval OTUs. The use of morphological identification and subsequent DNA barcoding of adult chironomids proved to be beneficial in revealing possible species level identifications of larval specimens. Sequence data from this study also contribute to currently inadequate public databases relevant to the Great Lakes region, while the neighbor-joining analysis reported here describes the application and confirmation of a useful tool that can accelerate identification and bioassessment of chironomid communities.

AIM: To determine prospectively the association of baseline hypertriglyceridaemic waist phenotype with incident diabetes in Asian-Indian men with impaired glucose tolerance. METHODS: In a randomized 2-year diabetes prevention trial in 517 men with impaired glucose tolerance, 123 (23.8%) developed diabetes. Baseline anthropometric, metabolic and clinical variables were estimated. Associations of hypertriglyceridaemic waist phenotype (waist circumference ≥ 90cm and a serum triglyceride level of ≥ 1.7 mmol/l) with insulin resistance and incident diabetes were assessed using multiple linear regression and Cox's proportional hazard models, respectively. RESULTS: Men with an isolated enlarged waistline and hypertriglyceridaemic waist phenotype had significantly higher BMI and percentage of total body fat compared with the group with normal waistline and triglyceride levels and the group with isolated hypertriglyceridaemia. The men with hypertriglyceridaemic waist phenotype had higher insulin resistance (mean ± sd homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance value: 3.6 ± 1.5) compared with those in the isolated enlarged waistline, the isolated hypertriglyceridaemia or the normal waistline and triglyceride level groups (3.1 ± 1.4, 2.7 ± 1.0 and 2.5 ± 1.1, respectively, all P < 0.05 compared with hypertriglyceridaemic waist phenotype). Multiple linear regression analyses showed that hypertriglyceridaemic waist phenotype was significantly associated with insulin resistance after adjusting for age, BMI, family history, percentage of total body fat, smoking, alcohol intake, 2-h plasma glucose and HDL cholesterol level. Hypertriglyceridaemic waist phenotype was independently associated with incident diabetes after adjusting for the above confounders and gamma-glutamyl transferase (hazard ratio 1.49, 95% CI 1.01-2.21; P = 0.047). The association of hypertriglyceridaemic waist phenotype with incident diabetes was abolished when insulin resistance was introduced into the model (hazard ratio 1.39, 95% CI 0.092-2.10; P=0.12). CONCLUSIONS: Hypertriglyceridaemic waist phenotype is a simple clinical proxy measurement for insulin resistance and is strongly associated with incident diabetes in Asian-Indian men with impaired glucose tolerance.

Eight wild soybean accessions with different saponin phenotypes were used to examine saponin composition and relative saponin quantity in various tissues of mature seeds and two-week-old seedlings by LC-PDA/MS/MS. Saponin composition and content were varied according to tissues and accessions. The average total saponin concentration in 1 g mature dry seeds of wild soybean was 16.08 ± 3.13 µmol. In two-week-old seedlings, produced from 1 g mature seeds, it was 27.94 ± 6.52 µmol. Group A saponins were highly concentrated in seed hypocotyl (4.04 ± 0.71 µmol). High concentration of DDMP saponins (7.37 ± 5.22 µmol) and Sg-6 saponins (2.19 ± 0.59 µmol) was found in cotyledonary leaf. In seedlings, the amounts of group A and Sg-6 saponins reduced 2.3- and 1.3-folds, respectively, while DDMP + B + E saponins increased 2.5-fold than those of mature seeds. Our findings show that the group A and Sg-6 saponins in mature seeds were degraded and/or translocated by germination whereas DDMP saponins were newly synthesized.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review examines the effectiveness of Lactobacillus reuteri as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases were searched according to specific inclusion and exclusion criteria in October 2022. Randomized control trials that evaluated the effects of Lactobacillus reuteri in patients with periodontitis were included. The primary outcome was pocket depth and clinical attachment levels, while the secondary outcome considered was bleeding on probing, microbial levels, and gingival index score. Study quality was assessed based on the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and the ROB2 tool. RESULTS: A total of eleven studies that examined 369 subjects were included in the review. Adults in the age group of 18-70 years of age suffering from chronic periodontitis were evaluated. Eight out of the eleven studies reported statistically significant improvement in the intergroup pocket depths, whereas seven studies showed a statistically significant reduction in the clinical attachment levels in the probiotic group. Three studies showed no significant improvement in the pocket depth levels in the probiotic group as compared to the controls. Four studies showed no significant reduction in clinical attachment levels between the two groups. The overall risk of bias was high in four studies, while seven studies reported some concerns about the risk of bias. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the limited evidence available, the adjunctive use of Lactobacillus reuteri to scaling and root planing may provide some additional benefit in improving periodontal parameters.

Like many widely cultivated crops, soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] has a relatively narrow genetic base, while its perennial distant relatives in the subgenus Glycine Willd. are more genetically diverse and display desirable traits not present in cultivated soybean. To identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between a pair of G. latifolia accessions that were resistant or susceptible to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary, reduced-representations of DNAs from each accession were sequenced. Approximately 30 % of the 36 million 100-nt reads produced from each of the two G. latifolia accessions aligned primarily to gene-rich euchromatic regions on the distal arms of G. max chromosomes. Because a genome sequence was not available for G. latifolia, the G. max genome sequence was used as a reference to identify 9,303 G. latifolia SNPs that aligned to unique positions in the G. max genome with at least 98 % identity and no insertions and deletions. To validate a subset of the SNPs, nine TaqMan and 384 GoldenGate allele-specific G. latifolia SNP assays were designed and analyzed in F2 G. latifolia populations derived from G. latifolia plant introductions (PI) 559298 and 559300. All nine TaqMan markers and 91 % of the 291 polymorphic GoldenGate markers segregated in a 1:2:1 ratio. Genetic linkage maps were assembled for G. latifolia, nine of which were uninterrupted and nearly collinear with the homoeologous G. max chromosomes. These results made use of a heterologous reference genome sequence to identify more than 9,000 informative high-quality SNPs for G. latifolia, a subset of which was used to generate the first genetic maps for any perennial Glycine species.

The recently introduced molecular descriptor (Single Exponential Decay Detector - SEDD) [P. de Silva, J. Korchowiec, T. A. Wesolowski, ChemPhysChem 2012, 13, 3462] is used to visualize bonding patterns in molecules. In each point of space SEDD is simply related to the electron density: SEDD(r) = In[1/rho2(del(del rho/rho)2)2]. Either experimental or computed densities rho(r) can be used to evaluate SEDD. Here, maps of SEDD are obtained from theoretical densities and reveal such features as core electrons, chemical bonds, lone pairs and delocalization in aromatic systems. It is shown that SEDD provides fingerprints of aromaticity, which can be separated into geometric and electronic effects.

Automated cellular instance segmentation is a process utilized for accelerating biological research for the past two decades, and recent advancements have produced higher quality results with less effort from the biologist. Most current endeavors focus on completely cutting the researcher out of the picture by generating highly generalized models. However, these models invariably fail when faced with novel data, distributed differently than the ones used for training. Rather than approaching the problem with methods that presume the availability of large amounts of target data and computing power for retraining, in this work we address the even greater challenge of designing an approach that requires minimal amounts of new annotated data as well as training time. We do so by designing specialized contrastive losses that leverage the few annotated samples very efficiently. A large set of results show that 3 to 5 annotations lead to models with accuracy that: 1) significantly mitigate the covariate shift effects; 2) matches or surpasses other adaptation methods; 3) even approaches methods that have been fully retrained on the target distribution. The adaptation training is only a few minutes, paving a path towards a balance between model performance, computing requirements and expert-level annotation needs.

Magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric coupling in the artificial multiferroic heterostructures facilitate valuable features for device applications such as magnetic field sensors and electric-write magnetic-read memory devices. In ferromagnetic/ferroelectric heterostructures, the intertwined physical properties can be manipulated by an external perturbation, such as an electric field, temperature, or a magnetic field. Here, we demonstrate the remote-controlled tunability of these effects under visible, coherent, and polarized light. The combined surface and bulk magnetic study of domain-correlated Ni/BaTiO3 heterostructures reveals that the system shows strong sensitivity to the light illumination via the combined effect of piezoelectricity, ferroelectric polarization, spin imbalance, magnetostriction, and magnetoelectric coupling. A well-defined ferroelastic domain structure is fully transferred from a ferroelectric substrate to the magnetostrictive layer via interface strain transfer. The visible light illumination is used to manipulate the original ferromagnetic microstructure by the light-induced domain wall motion in ferroelectric substrates and consequently the domain wall motion in the ferromagnetic layer. Our findings mimic the attractive remote-controlled ferroelectric random-access memory write and magnetic random-access memory read application scenarios, hence facilitating a perspective for room temperature spintronic device applications.

Social media allows for easy access and sharing of information in real-time. Since the beginning of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, social media has been used as a tool for public health officials to spread valuable information. However, many Internet users have also used it to spread misinformation, commonly referred to as "fake news." The spread of misinformation can lead to detrimental effects on the infrastructure of healthcare and society. The purpose of this scoping review was to identify the sources and impact of COVID-19 misinformation on social media and examine potential strategies for limiting the spread of misinformation. A systemized search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science electronic databases using search terms relevant to the COVID-19 pandemic, social media, misinformation, or disinformation was conducted. Identified titles and abstracts were screened to select original reports and cross-checked for duplications. Using both inclusion and exclusion criteria, results from the initial literature search were screened by independent reviewers. After quality assessment and screening for relevance, 20 articles were included in the final review. The following three themes emerged: (1) sources of misinformation, (2) impact of misinformation, and (3) strategies to limit misinformation about COVID-19 on social media. Misinformation was commonly shared on social media platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, messaging applications, and personal websites. The utilization of social media for the dissemination of evidence-based information was shown to be beneficial in combating misinformation. The evidence suggests that both individual websites and social media networks play a role in the spread of COVID-19 misinformation. This practice may potentially exacerbate the severity of the pandemic, create mistrust in public health experts, and impact physical and mental health. Efforts to limit and prevent misinformation require interdisciplinary, multilevel approaches involving government and public health agencies, social media corporations, and social influencers.

A nutrient retention study and a growth study were conducted with broiler chickens to evaluate the nutritive value and potential toxicity of 2 hairless canary seed products-hulled seed and groats (cultivar CDC Maria), and one hairy hulled canary seed (cultivar Keet). Each treatment was replicated 6 times (6 groups of 4 birds each). The hairless canary seed groat, hairless hulled canary seed, and the hairy hulled canary seed contained 24.5, 21.8, and 16.3% CP; 7.1, 5.8, and 6.6% ether extract; 1.5, 14.2, and 12.3% acid detergent fiber, and 3,867, 3,205 and 3,292 kcal/kg of AME(n), on a DM basis, respectively. The hairless canary seed groat, hairless hulled canary seed, and the hairy hulled canary seed protein comprised, respectively, 0.49, 0.33, and 0.33% lysine (DM basis), which was 79, 78, and 67% digestible (apparent ileal); 0.65, 0.53, and 0.60% cysteine (DM basis), which was 86, 87, and 85% apparent ileal digestible; and 0.40, 0.30, and 0.25% methionine (DM basis), which was 89, 90, and 86% apparent ileal digestible. In the second study, a 35-d feeding study with male broiler chickens was conducted. The canary seed products were compared with a Canadian Western Red Spring wheat control. Each treatment was replicated 6 times (6 groups of 4 birds each). The test ingredients comprised 50% of the corn/soybean diets. The birds fed the hulled canary seed (hairy or hairless) had similar weight gain, feed intake, and G:F to those fed wheat. There were no statistically significant (P = 0.05) differences in the weights of the bursa, heart, kidneys, liver, spleen, or the pancreas, nor was there any effect on serum lactate dehydrogenase or creatine kinase. The data indicated that feeding hulled canary seed increased the number of gizzard ulcers (P < 0.01). It was concluded that canary seed does not contain anti-nutritional components that negatively affect broiler performance or bird health. However, the canary seed hulls may damage the gizzard lining.

RESUMEN

We synthesized mesoporous cobalt titanate (CTO) microrods via the sol-gel method as an outstanding working electrode for the supercapacitor. The mesoporous CTO microrods were amassed in hexagonal shapes of an average width of ∼670 nm, and were composed of nanoparticles of average diameter ∼41 nm. The well crystalline CTO microrods of the hexagonal phase to the R3̄ space group possessed an average pore size distribution of 3.92 nm throughout the microrod. The mesoporous CTO microrods with increased textural boundaries played a vital role in the diffusion of ions, and they provided a specific capacitance of 608.4 F g-1 and a specific power of 4835.7 W kg-1 and a specific energy of 9.77 W h kg-1 in an aqueous 2 M KOH electrolyte, which was remarkably better than those of Ti, La, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Sr-based perovskites or their mixed heterostructures supplemented by metal oxides as an impurity. Furthermore, the diffusion-controlled access to the OH- ions (0.27 µs) deep inside the microrod conveyed high stability, a long life cycle for up to 1950 continuous charging-discharging cycles, and excellent capacitance retention of 82.3%. Overall, the mesoporous CTO shows its potential as an electrode for a long-cycle supercapacitor, and provides opportunities for additional enhancement after developing the core-shell hetero-architecture with other metal oxide materials such as MnO2, and TiO2.

RESUMEN

Hormographiella aspergillata, a basidiomycete is a rare cause of human infection. We report a case of 70-year-old female with corneal ulcer and endophthalmitis caused by this agent. The patient had an intraocular implantation of lens following a cataract surgery. Corneal tissue obtained during therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty showed presence of septate hyphae on microscopy and culture grew H. aspergillata which was confirmed by sequencing of ITS region. Patient was started on systemic voriconazole and topical natamycin, however the eye could not be salvaged. To our knowledge, this is the first report of ocular infection caused Hormographiella aspergillata in an immunocompetent patient.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia severity can be empirically described by the latent dementia phenotype "δ" and its various composite "homologs". We have explored δ's blood-based protein biomarkers in the Texas Alzheimer's Research and Care Consortium (TARCC) study. However, it would be convenient to replicate those associations in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). To this end, we recently engineered a δ homolog from observed cognitive performance measures common to both projects (i.e., "dT2A"). METHODS: We used nine rationally chosen peripheral blood-based protein biomarkers as indicators of a latent variable "INFLAMMATION". We then associated that construct with dT2A in structural equation models adjusted for age, gender, depressive symptoms, and apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allelic burden. Significant factor loadings and INFLAMMATION's association with dT2A were confirmed in random splits of TARCC's relatively large sample, and across biofluids in the ADNI. RESULTS: Nine proteins measured in serum (TARCC) or plasma (ADNI) explained ≅10% of dT2A's variance in both samples, independently of age, APOE, education, and gender. All loaded significantly on INFLAMMATION, and positively or negatively, depending on their known roles are PRO- or ANTI-inflammatory proteins, respectively. The parameters of interest were confirmed across random 50% splits of the TARCC's sample, and replicated across biofluids in the ADNI. DISCUSSION: These results suggest that SEM can be used to replicate biomarker findings across samples and biofluids, and that a substantial fraction of dementia's variance is attributable to peripheral blood-based protein levels.
