RESUMEN

Studying parasites in captive wild birds is vital for their health, well-being, biodiversity preservation, species conservation, and safeguarding of both individual birds and ecosystems. It holds significance for public health by identifying potential zoonotic risks. We aimed to describe the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites in captive wild birds from a Conservation Institute in Brazilian Cerrado biome. Fresh fecal samples were collected from 17 captive wild birds (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus, Ara ararauna, Ara chloropterus, Ara macao, Megascops choliba, Pteroglossus castanotis, Ramphastos dicolorus, Ramphastos tucanus and Strix huhula) at a Conservation Institution in Mineiros, state of Goiás. The samples were processed for Willis' simple flotation and Hoffman's spontaneous sedimentation examinations to identify parasitic forms of gastrointestinal endoparasites. Macaw aviary birds (Ar. ararauna, Ar. chloropterus and Ar. macao) showed higher positivity, with all six fecal samples positive for helminths or protozoa. In contrast, captive toucans showed only two positive results (P. castanotis and R. dicolorus). An. hyacinthinus showed Ascarididae, Capillarinae and Trematoda eggs; whereas S. huhula had Ascarididae eggs. Regular parasitological examinations are essential for the timely detection and treatment of gastrointestinal infections in captive birds, thereby enhancing overall bird management.

RESUMEN

The excited states of unstable ^{20}O were investigated via γ-ray spectroscopy following the ^{19}O(d,p)^{20}O reaction at 8 AMeV. By exploiting the Doppler shift attenuation method, the lifetimes of the 2_{2}^{+} and 3_{1}^{+} states were firmly established. From the γ-ray branching and E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the 2_{2}^{+} and 3_{1}^{+} states, the B(E2) and B(M1) were determined. Various chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians, describing the nuclear properties beyond ground states, along with a standard USDB interaction, were compared with the experimentally obtained data. Such a comparison for a large set of γ-ray transition probabilities with the valence space in medium similarity renormalization group ab initio calculations was performed for the first time in a nucleus far from stability. It was shown that the ab initio approaches using chiral effective field theory forces are challenged by detailed high-precision spectroscopic properties of nuclei. The reduced transition probabilities were found to be a very constraining test of the performance of the ab initio models.

RESUMEN

The aim of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of the use of different industrial and agricultural wastes as reactive materials in Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRB) for Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) remediation. Sugar foam (SF), paper mill sludge (PMS), drinking water sludge (DWS) and olive mill waste (OMW) were evaluated in terms of pH neutralization and metal removal from AMD. Laboratory batch tests and continuous pilot scale up-flow columns containing 82% of Volcanic Slag (VS), as porous fill material, and 18% w/w of one of the industrial and agricultural wastes previously indicated, were tested. From the batch tests it was observed that the reactive material presenting the best results were the SF and the PMS. The results obtained in all the PRB were accurately described by a pseudo-first order model, presenting coefficient of determination higher than 0.96 in all the cases. During the continuous operation of the PRB, the porosity and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of most of the up-flow columns strongly decreased due to chemical precipitation and biofilm growth. The SF presented a significant number of fine particles that were washed out by the liquid flow, generating an effluent with very high total suspended solid concentration. Despite SF was the material with the highest alkalinity potential, the reduction of the HRT limited its neutralization and metal removal capacity. PMS and DWS presented the best pollutant removal yields in the continuous operation of the PRB, ranging from 55 to 99% and 55-95% (except in the case of the Mn), respectively. These results allowed the metal removal from the AMD. Additionally, these wastes presented very good biological sulphate reduction. Based on these results, the use of PMS and DWS as reactive material in PRB would allow to simultaneously valorise the industrial waste, which is very interesting within the circular economy framework, and to remove metals from the AMD by means of a low-cost and environmentally sustainable procedure.

RESUMEN

The reduced transition probabilities for the 4_{1}^{+}→2_{1}^{+} and 2_{1}^{+}→0_{1}^{+} transitions in ^{92}Mo and ^{94}Ru and for the 4_{1}^{+}→2_{1}^{+} and 6_{1}^{+}→4_{1}^{+} transitions in ^{90}Zr have been determined in this experiment making use of a multinucleon transfer reaction. These results have been interpreted on the basis of realistic shell-model calculations in the f_{5/2}, p_{3/2}, p_{1/2}, and g_{9/2} proton valence space. Only the combination of extensive lifetime information and large scale shell-model calculations allowed the extent of the seniority conservation in the N=50 g_{9/2} orbital to be understood. The conclusion is that seniority is largely conserved in the first πg_{9/2} orbital.

RESUMEN

Chains of coupled oscillators exhibit energy propagation by means of waves, pulses, and fronts. Nonreciprocal coupling radically modifies the wave dynamics of chains. Based on a prototype model of nonlinear chains with nonreciprocal coupling to nearest neighbors, we study nonlinear wave dynamics. Nonreciprocal coupling induces a convective instability between unstable and stable equilibrium. Increasing the coupling level, the chain presents a propagative pattern, a traveling wave. This emergent phenomenon corresponds to the self-assembly of localized structures. The pattern wavelength is characterized as a function of the coupling. Analytically, the phase diagram is determined and agrees with numerical simulations.

RESUMEN

Isotopic distributions of fragments from fission of the neutron-deficient ^{178}Hg nuclide are reported. This experimental observable is obtained for the first time in the region around lead using an innovative approach based on inverse kinematics and the coincidence between the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer VAMOS++ and a new detection arm close to the target. The average fragment N/Z ratio and prompt neutron M_{n} multiplicity are derived and compared with current knowledge from actinide fission. A striking consistency emerges, revealing the unexpected dominant role of the proton subsystem with atomic number between the Z=28 and 50 magic numbers. The origin of nuclear charge polarization in fission and fragment deformation at scission are discussed.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Sexually transgressive behaviour by adolescents is a serious societal issue. Unfortunately, as this is a difficult group to research, the scientific evidence on which mental health workers can base their treatment is rather limited. AIM: Mapping treatment interventions and their impact based on practical experience. METHOD: Qualitative research, through in-depth interviews with Flemish mental health workers (n = 10), presented as a narrative thematic analysis. RESULTS: Adolescents who showed sexually transgressive behaviour were often scarred by developmental and psychological trauma. They should not necessarily be regarded as a separate category. Five main themes surfaced as focal points for treatment: aligning with the profile of the adolescent, resistance and motivation, therapeutical relationship, need for a positive story, and the context. In addition, some common practical obstacles for succesful treatment were also identified. CONCLUSION: Common factors of psychotherapy are key elements for their treatment as well. Treatment would also benefit from additional efforts, including investments into the continuity of care.

RESUMEN

Reliable neutron-induced-reaction cross sections of unstable nuclei are essential for nuclear astrophysics and applications but their direct measurement is often impossible. The surrogate-reaction method is one of the most promising alternatives to access these cross sections. In this work, we successfully applied the surrogate-reaction method to infer for the first time both the neutron-induced fission and radiative capture cross sections of ^{239}Pu in a consistent manner from a single measurement. This was achieved by combining simultaneously measured fission and γ-emission probabilities for the ^{240}Pu(^{4}He,^{4}He^{'}) surrogate reaction with a calculation of the angular-momentum and parity distributions populated in this reaction. While other experiments measure the probabilities for some selected γ-ray transitions, we measure the γ-emission probability. This enlarges the applicability of the surrogate-reaction method.

RESUMEN

The combinatorial chemistry has been an important tool for the development of new strategies against the Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Therefore, we evaluated the antimycobacterial activity of two coordinated metal complexes (Cu(II) and Co(II)) and a free ligand, including in the intramacrophage environment. The complexes were more active than the free ligand, indicating that the complexation favoured the antimicrobial activity. None of the compounds showed cytotoxic effect at the concentration of 200 µg ml-1 and both complexes showed intracellular antimicrobial activity, with results as effective as rifampicin. In this study, it was possible to identify complexes containing benzohydroxamate associated with transition metal ions (Cu2+ and Co2+ ), which were able to inhibit the growth of M. tuberculosis, including in persistence stage. In addition, the docking analysis allows inferring a possible interaction of the metal complexes with the enzyme urease, which has been reported as crucial for the bacillus survival in the intraphagosomal environment. Thus, these set of results demonstrate the potential of these metals in the development of new drugs against M. tuberculosis. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: In this study, it was possible to identify complexes containing benzohydroxamate associated with transition metals (Cu2+ and Co2+ ), which were able to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, including in the persistence stage. In this context, cobalt and copper can be scaffolds for new drugs against M. tuberculosis.

RESUMEN

In recent times, however, due to the emergence of bacterial strains with resistance to conventional antibiotics, silver has again gained attention as an alternative for developing new efficient bactericides, including the use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). However, the improper disposal of these items after use may cause toxicological effects on organisms in the environment. To evaluate the potential environmental hazard of nanosilver-coated dressings, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans was chosen as a test organism. The assays were conducted in 24-well plates that contain four different sizes of coated dressing to obtain different concentrations. L1 and L4 C. elegans larval stages were exposed to these nanosilver concentrations. Dressing cutouts were arranged between two layers of agar for 3 days and Escherichia coli (OP 50 strain) was added as food source for the worms. After the exposure period, growth, reproduction, fertility, silver concentration in the medium and the concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the worms were evaluated. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy analyses were performed on the coated dressings, as well as analyses of zeta potential, ionic release and antibacterial power in two bacterial strains (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus). It was verified the antibacterial power of the coated dressing, in both bacteria strains tested. Characterization of the coated dressing indicated heterogeneous nanoparticles, as well as distinct zeta potentials for the medium in water and saline medium (0.9% NaCl). L1 larval worms exposed to nanosilver-coated dressing showed a high ROS concentration and reductions in growth, fertility and reproduction. Worms exposed to the coated dressing during the L4 stage showed almost no response. Overall, the obtained results indicate the potential environmental hazard of nanosilver-coated dressings.

RESUMEN

We consider a generic interaction-redistribution model of vegetation dynamics to investigate the formation of patchy vegetation in semi-arid and arid landscapes. First, we perform a weakly nonlinear analysis in the neighborhood of the symmetry-breaking instability. Following this analysis, we construct the bifurcation diagram of the biomass density. The weakly nonlinear analysis allows us to establish the condition under which the transition from super- to subcritical symmetry-breaking instability takes place. Second, we generate a random distribution of localized patches of vegetation numerically. This behavior occurs in regimes where a bare state coexists with a uniform biomass density. Field observations allow to estimate the total biomass density and the range of facilitative and competitive interactions.

RESUMEN

A direct and complete measurement of isotopic fission-fragment yields of ^{239}U has been performed for the first time. The ^{239}U fissioning system was produced with an average excitation energy of 8.3 MeV in one-neutron transfer reactions between a ^{238}U beam and a ^{9}Be target at Coulomb barrier energies. The fission fragments were detected and isotopically identified using the VAMOS++ spectrometer at the GANIL facility. The measurement allows us to directly evaluate the fission models at excitation energies of fast neutrons, which are relevant for next-generation nuclear reactors. The present data, in agreement with model calculations, do not support the recently reported anomaly in the fission-fragment yields of ^{239}U, and they confirm the persistence of spherical shell effects in the Sn region at excitation energies exceeding the fission barrier by a few mega-electron volts.

RESUMEN

An impaired expression of α-defensins (α-Defs) in the ileal mucosa and, conversely, increased levels in plasma, have been reported in Crohn's disease (CD). However, the specificity and correlation of these findings with the degree of inflammation are unclear. We aimed to characterize the concentration and utility of ileal and plasma α-Defs in CD and to analyse a potential epigenetic mechanism of α-Def expression. Peripheral blood samples and ileal biopsies were obtained from patients at disease onset (aCD), from those who achieved remission (iCD) and from two control groups (healthy controls and non-CD-aetiology ileitis patients). Plasma α-Defs 1-3 and 4 were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); α-Def 5 by immunolocalization. Methylation analysis of the α-Def 5 gene was performed using the MassARRAY EpiTYPER system. Plasma α-Defs 1-3 concentrations were significantly higher in aCD with ileal involvement (L1, L3) versus iCD or the control groups. The α-Defs 1-3 concentrations were also similar to healthy controls in patients with non-CD ileitis. There was a significant positive correlation between plasma α-Defs 1-3 levels in aCD and the endoscopic index, as well as with C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. The immunopositivity scoring showed significantly reduced α-Def 5 expression in ileal inflamed (aCD) versus non-inflamed mucosa (iCD and healthy controls). The α-Def 5 gene showed a higher methylation status in CD patients than controls, regardless of the inflammation. Plasma α-Defs 1-3 concentrations correlate with the degree of inflammation and appear to be specific biomarkers of ileal-CD at diagnosis. Ileal α-Def 5 expression is down-regulated permanently by methylation.

RESUMEN

To date two main aging vascular lesions have been reported in elderly human retinas: acellular capillaries and microaneurysms. However, their exact mechanism of formation remains unclear. Using high resolution microscopy techniques we revise cellular alterations observed in aged human retinal vessels, such as lipofuscin accumulation, caveolae malfunction, blood basement membrane disruption and enhanced apoptosis that could trigger the development of these aging vascular lesions. Moreover, we have generated a set of original images comparing retinal vasculature between middle and old aged healthy humans to show in a comprehensive manner the main structural and ultrastructural alterations occurred during age in retinal blood vessels.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy (CT), widely used as adjuvant therapy for stage III and selected high-risk stage II colon cancer (CC) patients, is often associated with cumulative peripheral neuropathy. Our aim is to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes involved in oxaliplatin metabolism, DNA repair mechanisms, cell cycle control, detoxification or excretion pathways to predict severe (grade 2-3) oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy (OXPN) among CC patients treated with oxaliplatin and fluoropyrimidine-based adjuvant CT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Genomic DNA was extracted from formalin-fixed-paraffin-embedded peritumoral samples from 206 high-risk stage II and stage III CC patients receiving oxaliplatin-based adjuvant CT from January 2004 to December 2009. Genotyping was carried out for 34 SNPs in 15 genes using MassARRAY (SEQUENOM) technology. A total of 181 stage II-III CC patients treated with the same CT regimens were enrolled as a validation set. RESULTS: The rs2230641 cyclin H (CCNH) rs2230641 C/C [odd ratio (OR)=5.03, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.061-2.41, P=0.042] and the ATP-binding cassette subfamily G, member 2 (ABCG2) rs3114018 A/A genotypes (OR=2.67; 95% CI 0.95-4.41; P=0.059) were associated with a higher risk of severe OXPN. In addition, patients harboring the combination of CCNH C/C and/or the ABCG2 rs3114018 A/A genotypes had a higher risk of grade 2-3 OXPN than those with the CCNH any T and ABCG2 any C genotypes (37.73% versus 19.42%; OR=2.46; 95% CI 1.19-5.07; P=0.014) in the logistic regression analysis using age, gender, adjuvant CT regimen and cumulative dose of oxaliplatin as covariates. The ability to predict severe OXPN of this combined analysis was independently validated in the second cohort (58% versus 33.33%; OR=2.99; 95% CI 1.45-6.13; P=0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that SNPs in CCNH and ABCG2 can modulate the development of severe OXPN among stage II-III CC patients who received oxaliplatin-based CT, thus enabling the individualization of adjuvant treatment.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Report our experience in the diagnosis and treatment of Boerhaave syndrome by retrospective study from 1997 to 2013. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted covering the time frame of 1997 to 2013. RESULTS: There were a total of 5 men (71%) and 2 women (29%) and the mean age was 54 years (range: 33-80 years). Diagnosis was made through computed tomography scan in 5 cases (71%) and esophagogram in 2 cases (19%). Six patients (86%) had emergency surgery, whereas one case (14%) was managed conservatively. The surgical technique employed was primary suture and repair in 4 patients (67%) and esophageal resection and subsequent cervical esophagostomy in 2 patients (33%). CONCLUSIONS: Boerhaave's syndrome is a clinically rare entity with an elevated mortality rate. Therefore, a high degree of suspicion is necessary for making the diagnosis and providing early treatment that can result in improved outcome.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To describe the results of the application of a Machine Learning (ML) model to predict in-hospital cardiac arrests (ICA) 24 hours in advance in the hospital wards. DESIGN: Retrospective observational cohort study. SETTING: Hospital Wards. PATIENTS: Data were extracted from the hospital's Electronic Health Record (EHR). The resulting database contained a total of 750 records corresponding to 620 different patients (370 patients with ICA and 250 control), between may 2009 and december 2021. INTERVENTIONS: No. MAIN VARIABLES OF INTEREST: As predictors of ICA, a set of 28 variables including personal history, vital signs and laboratory data was employed. MODELS: For the early prediction of ICA, predictive models based on the following ML algorithms and using the mentioned variables, were developed and compared: K Nearest Neighbours, Support Vector Machine, Multilayer Perceptron, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting and Custom Ensemble of Gradient Boosting estimators (CEGB). EXPERIMENTS: Model training and evaluation was carried out using cross validation. Among metrics of performance, accuracy, specificity, sensitivity and AUC were estimated. RESULTS: The best performance was provided by the CEGB model, which obtained an AUC = 0.90, a specificity = 0.84 and a sensitivity = 0.81. The main variables with influence to predict ICA were level of consciousness, haemoglobin, glucose, urea, blood pressure, heart rate, creatinine, age and hypertension, among others. CONCLUSIONS: The use of ML models could be of great support in the early detection of ICA, as the case of the CEGB model endorsed, which enabled good predictions of ICA.
