RESUMEN

AIMS: The purpose was to characterize Salmonella Heidelberg (SH) and Minnesota (SM) isolates in terms of their resistance and persistence profile and to assess the antimicrobial effect of benzoic acid (BA) and polypyrrole (PPy). METHODS AND RESULTS: The 20 isolates from broiler litter drag swabs were submitted to antibiogram and efflux pump expression. The minimum inhibitory/bactericidal concentration (MIC/MBC) of the compounds, synergistic activity, time kill, biofilm production, presence of related genes, and molecular docking between compounds and bacterial target sites were evaluated. All isolates showed multidrug resistance (MDR) and BA and PPy showed mean MIC (1750 and 342 µg ml-1) and MBC (3167 and 1000 µg ml-1), respectively. None of the isolates expressed an efflux pump. The compounds showed synergism against an SH isolate and reduced the count by 3 logs in the presence of the compounds after 4 h. Most isolates (16/20) produced weak to moderate biofilm and 17 showed genes related to biofilm. The compounds interacted with two essential proteins, 3,4-dihydroxy-2-butanone 4-phosphate synthase proteins and ferritin-like domain-containing protein, in bacterial metabolism at different target sites. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that BA and PPy showed activity on SH and SM, MDR, and biofilm producers, with a potential synergistic effect.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Flaxseed oil (FO) is an alpha linolenic acid source important for growth and body development. However, there is little literature on the role of FO in critical stages of bone development and formation. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the influence of a diet containing FO on rat femurs. METHODS: After birth, mothers and pups were divided into control and flaxseed groups (n = 6 pups each) fed diets containing 7% soybean oil (C) or 7% FO. At 21 days, pups were weaned and separated from the mothers, and control or experimental diets were continued. At 67 days, the following were analyzed: osteocalcin and osteoprotegerin (OPG) levels, bone mineral density (BMD) and content, and bone area; the dimension, BMD, head radiodensity, and biomechanical proprieties of the right femur; and histomorphometric parameters of the left femur. RESULTS: Compared to the C group, the FO group presented (p < 0.05) a lower body mass (-3.7%) and medullary area (-10.1%) and higher osteocalcin (+36.7%), OPG (+52.5%), femur width (+3.8%), absolute mass (+2.3%), femur BMD (+3.6%), head radiodensity (+6.1%), maximum force (+7.4%), breaking strength (+17.3), and cortical thickness (+7.0). CONCLUSION: The FO diet contributed to femur quality in healthy male Wistar rats.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Blood collection from dogs is the most commonly performed procedure in the medical clinic. However, different factors can interfere with the quality of the material collected, potentially causing complications for patients. Simulated skill training is a teaching strategy designed to provide early training to students, develop their skills and self-confidence, and increase the procedure's success while reducing complications. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate skill training using a low-fidelity simulator in the peripheral venipuncture procedure and examine the training's influence on the in vivo procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To assess skill training, this study used a low-fidelity simulator in the peripheral venipuncture procedure and examines the training's effect on the in vivo procedure. In total, 100 dogs, 65 undergraduate students, 3 veterinarians, and 4 previously trained evaluators participated. The canine in vivo venipuncture procedure was evaluated both before and after the simulated skill training and the low-fidelity simulator training. Data were collected on participants' self-confidence levels. RESULTS: Local complications occurred during in vivo practice; however, after training, they decreased. Gloves were more frequently used during the procedure, resulting in a reduction of both harvest attempts and complications, as well as increased levels of self-confidence in post-training participants. The simulator developed had low fidelity, low cost, and was easy to create. CONCLUSION: Skill training in peripheral venipuncture using a low-fidelity simulator positively influences student learning, increases their self-confidence during in vivo harvesting, and reduces the complications of the procedure, improving patient well-being.

Objective To analyze the marketing of food products related to children. Methods The method of approach used for observation, hypothetical deductive, quantitative form, products aimed at children, marketed in hypermarkets (represented by Y and Y²), neighborhood market (represented by X and X²) and wholesalers (represented Z¹ and Z²), in the municipality of Taubaté / SP. Each product analyzed was classified into seven categories. Results An observation was made of 432 products that have on their labels characters or children's drawings, being 419 processed products and 13 natural products. We found 30.09% of fat, 27.54% of dairy products, 15.5% of stuffed crackers, 14.81% of corn chips, 9.02% of fruit juice, 1.38% of fruits and 1, 62% whole products. Conclusion When analyzing how many natural and industrialized products make use of the same character, none were found in common. At no time in the data collection was it possible to observe that products that have a more childish marketing are arranged on the lower shelves in the medium and large markets, whereas in the small markets these products are not always on the lower shelves
