RESUMEN

Silicone elastomers are widely used in aviation, electronics, automotive, and medical device fields, and their overuse inevitably causes recycled problems. In addition, the elastomers are subject to attack by bacteria and fire during use in some application scenarios, which is a safety hazard. Therefore, there is a great need to prepare silicone elastomers with improved antibacterial, flame retardant, self-healing, and recyclable functions. A new strategy is proposed to prepare silicone elastomers with bio-based tannic acid as cross-linkers to solve this problem by using polydimethylsiloxane as a soft chain segment and 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid as an intermediate chain extender. Based on the phenol carbamate bonding and hydrogen bonding interactions, the elastomer has efficient self-healing ability and can achieve dynamic dissociation at 120 °C for complete recovery. In addition, due to the unique spatial structure and polyphenolic hydroxyl groups of tannic acid, the mechanical properties of the elastomer are greatly improved with an antimicrobial efficiency of over 90% and a final oxygen index of 25.5%. The multifunctional silicone elastomer has great potential applications in recyclable refractory materials and antimicrobial materials.

RESUMEN

Objective: To explore the modulations of electroacupuncture in subjective tinnitus (ST) by comparing the difference of functional connectivity (FC) in ST patients and healthy volunteers between the insular (INS) and the whole brain region. Methods: A total of 34 ST patients were selected into electroacupuncture group (EG) and 34 age- and sex-matched normal subjects were recruited into control group (CG). The EG received acupuncture at SI19 (Tinggong), GB11 (Touqiaoyin), TE17 (Yifeng), GV20 (Baihui), GV15 (Yamen), GV14 (Dazhui), SJ13 (Zhongzhu), among which the points of SI19 and GB11 were connected to the electroacupuncture instrument with the density wave of 2/50 Hz, and 3 treatments per week for 10 sessions in total. The severity of tinnitus was evaluated by Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), the hearing status was recorded using pure tone audiometry, and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was performed on the brain before and after treatment, the CG received no intervention yet only rs-fMRI data were collected. Results: With the electroacupuncture treatment, the total THI score, average air conduction threshold of patients of EG were significantly lower than before (p < 0.01), and the total effective rate was 88.24%. Compared with CG, FC of ST patients between INS and left superior temporal gyrus and right hippocampal significantly decreased before treatment, while FC of ST patients between INS and right superior frontal gyrus, left middle frontal gyrus and right anterior cuneus significantly decreased after treatment (voxel p < 0.001, cluster p < 0.05, corrected with GRF). FC of ST patients between the INS and right middle frontal gyrus, left superior frontal gyrus and right paracentral lobule showed a significant decrease after treatment (voxel p < 0.001, cluster p < 0.05, corrected with GRF). In addition, THI score in EG was negatively correlated with the reduction of FC value in INS-left superior frontal gyrus before treatment (r = -0.41, p = 0.017). Therefore, this study suggests that abnormal FC of INS may be one of the significant central mechanisms of ST patients and can be modulated by electroacupuncture. Discussion: Electroacupuncture treatment can effectively reduce or eliminate tinnitus symptoms in ST patients and improve the hearing by decreasing FC between the INS and the frontal and temporal brain regions.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To explore the effect of acupuncture for Ningshen Tongqiao (tranquilizing the spirit and unblocking the orifices) on the functional connectivity (FC) between the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the whole brain in the patients with subjective tinnitus using the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: Forty patients with subjective tinnitus and 40 healthy subjects were recruited. The patients with subjective tinnitus were treated with acupuncture for Ningshen Tongqiao at Yamen (GV 15) and Baihui (GV 20), as well as Tinggong (SI 19), Touqiaoyin (GB 11) and Shuaigu (GB 8) on the affected side; and Tinggong (SI 19) and Touqiaoyin (GB 11) were attached to the electric acupuncture apparatus and stimulated with disperse-dense wave and 2 Hz/50 Hz in frequency. Acupuncture was operated once daily, 3 times a week and 10 treatments were required. Before and after treatment, the scores of tinnitus evaluation questionnaire (TEQ), tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) and tinnitus visual analogue scale (VAS) were evaluated; and the clinical therapeutic effect was assessed. Separately, the patients with subjective tinnitus received one time of fMRI within 2 days before and after treatment, and the healthy subjects underwent one time of fMRI after enrollment. The bilateral ACC was taken as the region of interest (ROI). Using matlab R2017b software, FC between ACC and the whole brain was calculated. RESULTS: After treatment, the scores of THI, TEQ and VAS were reduced in the subjective tinnitus patients compared with those before treatment (P<0.01); and the total effective rate was 92.5% (37/40). Before treatment, compared with the healthy subjects, FC between the right ACC and the left middle temporal gyrus, the left superior temporal gyrus and the left superior frontal gyrus decreased in the subjective tinnitus patients. FC between the right ACC and the left middle frontal gyrus and the bilateral angular gyrus was dropped, while that between the left ACC and the left middle frontal gyrus, the left thalamus, the left angular gyrus and the left middle temporal gyrus was decreased in the subjective tinnitus patients when compared with the healthy subjects after treatment. Compared with those before treatment, FC between the right ACC and the left lingual gyrus and the left thalamus were declined, and that between the left ACC and the right middle frontal gyrus and the right superior frontal gyrus was decreased in the subjective tinnitus patients after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture can effectively relieve the clinical symptoms of subjective tinnitus patients, and promote the functional re-construction of the auditory regions (temporal lobe, frontal lobe and thalamus) and the emotion-related brain regions.

RESUMEN

With the rapid development of the textile industry, a large amount of dyeing wastewater discharge has caused great harm to the ecological environment. In this work, a dual-network, composite hydrogel adsorbent with excellent mechanical properties, good reusability, and large adsorption capacity was prepared by introducing chitosan cross-linked polyvinylamine into the N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide cross-linked polyacrylic acid network. The dual cross-linking network gave the hydrogel excellent mechanical properties with maximum tensile stress and strain up to 1.9 MPa and 920 %. The adsorption capacity of methylene blue on hydrogel was up to 596.14 mg/g. In addition, the prepared hydrogel exhibited good reusability, and their adsorption efficiency remained above 85 % in five consecutive cycles. The adsorption behavior was well fitted by Pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir equation, indicating that the hydrogel was chemisorbed to the dye as a monolayer. The adsorption mechanism analysis showed that the electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding between the functional groups of the hydrogels and methylene blue molecules contributed to the good adsorption capacity. Overall, the synthesized composite hydrogels could be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue dye, particularly from textile industry wastewater.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Subjective tinnitus is a common and intractable ear disease. The effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of subjective tinnitus has been confirmed, but its mechanism of action is not clear. The structures of the amygdala (AMYG) are mainly closely related to emotion in the human brain. This study aimed to investigate the changes in functional connectivity (FC) of AMYG in subjective tinnitus to elucidate the neural mechanism of acupuncture. Methods: Correlation scale scores of 26 patients with subjective tinnitus were collected, including Tinnitus Evaluation Questionnaire (TEQ), Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Meanwhile, rs-fMRI data were collected before and after acupuncture treatment in the patients, and in healthy controls (HC) matching the patient's gender and age. Then, AMYG was selected as region of interest to perform FC analysis. Finally, FC patterns of AMYG were first compared between patients with subjective tinnitus and HC, and then within subjects pre-acupuncture and post-acupuncture. Simple linear regression models between correlation scale scores and FC-values were established as well. Results: Acupuncture treatment relieved the severity of tinnitus. With the acupuncture treatment, the total THI score, TEQ score, and VSA score of patients were significantly lower than before (p < 0.05). Compared with HC, FC of tinnitus patients between AMYG and right inferior temporal gyrus and right precuneus significantly decreased before acupuncture (voxel p < 0.001, cluster p < 0.05, corrected with GRF), while FC of tinnitus patients between AMYG and left superior frontal gyrus and right superior temporal gyrus significantly decreased after acupuncture treatment (voxel p < 0.001, cluster p < 0.05, corrected with GRF). FC of tinnitus patients between the AMYG and right superior frontal gyrus and left paracingulate gyrus showed significant decrease after acupuncture treatment (voxel p < 0.001, cluster p < 0.05, corrected with GRF). Besides, the linear regression models of the effect of THI on FC and VAS on FC performed were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Discussion: The findings demonstrate that acupuncture can decrease FC of AMYG, which could be positively correlated with the relief of tinnitus symptoms. This result suggests that acupuncture stimulation can effectively relieve the severity of tinnitus by decreasing FC of AMYG in subjective tinnitus patients.

RESUMEN

The current method of treating arsenic-containing wastewater is mainly to use a calcium method to synthesize stable calcium arsenate. It is easy to cause reverse dissolution by rain or other erosion, releasing arsenic into the natural world and polluting soil and groundwater. So, calcium arsenate is not an ideal material for removing and immobilizing arsenic. Iron arsenate (FeAsO4) is much better than calcium arsenate because of its stability and acid resistance. In this study, calcium arsenate@iron arsenate coating materials were synthesized. From the results of the XRD and SEM analyses, it was shown that calcium arsenate was coated by an iron arsenate shell which consisted of nanoparticles. The stability of the coating materials was determined using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). The results showed that the concentrations of As for CaHAsO4 and Ca3(AsO4)2 were 744 mg L-1 and 302.2 mg L-1, respectively. Arsenic was not detected through the TCLP tests for CaHAsO4@FeAsO4 and Ca3(AsO4)2@FeAsO4 coating materials, and the best coating condition was confirmed to be an Fe/As molar ratio of 4 : 1, pH of 4, and temperature of 50 °C. The stability of the materials showed a significant improvement. The results indicated that calcium arsenate materials could be converted to coating materials by using ferric salts. The coating materials had excellent stability in an aqueous solution. Thus, the coating was suitable for the removal and immobilization of arsenic in industrial applications. This work provided a new way to treat arsenic-containing wastewater, which was simple and economical. This method has potential for use in the field of wastewater treatment containing arsenic.

RESUMEN

In this study, we propose a growth pathway of scorodite in an atmospheric scorodite synthesis. Scorodite is a non-direct product, which is derived from the transformation of its precursor. Different precursor speciation leads to different crystallinity and morphology of synthesized scorodite. At 10 and 20 g l-1 initial arsenic concentration, the precursor of scorodite is identified as ferrihydrite. At 10 g l-1 initial arsenic concentration, low arsenic concentration is unfavourable to the complex between arsenate and ferrihydrite, inhibiting the transformation of ferrihydrite into scorodite. The synthesized scorodite is 1-3 µm in size. At 20 g l-1 initial arsenic concentration, higher arsenic concentration favours the complex between arsenate and ferrihydrite. The transformation process is accessible. Large scorodite in the particle size of 5-20 µm with excellent crystallinity is obtained. However, the increasing initial arsenic concentration is not always a positive force for the growth of scorodite. When initial arsenic concentration increases to 30 g l-1, Fe(O,OH)6 octahedron preferentially connects to As(O,OH)4 tetrahedron to form Fe H 2 As O 4 2 + or FeHAs O 4 + ion. Fe-As complex ions accumulate in solution. Once the supersaturation exceeds the critical value, the Fe-As complex ions deprotonate and form poorly crystalline ferric arsenate. Even poorly crystalline ferric arsenate can also transform to crystalline scorodite, its transformation process is much slower than ferrihydrite. Therefore, incomplete developed scorodite with poor crystallinity is obtained.

RESUMEN

The release of hazardous gas increases with the development of industry. The research of gas-sensitive materials has attracted attention. Nanoscale iron oxide (α-Fe2O3) is one of the research hotspots of gas-sensitive materials because it is a cheap, non-toxic semiconductor material. In this study, pomegranate-shaped α-Fe2O3 was synthesized using an in situ corrosion method of scorodite. Spherical-shaped α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were included in the octahedral shells. The forming process of the structure was analyzed by a variety of measurements. The shell was formed first through the deposition of Fe(OH)3, which was produced by hydrolyzing scorodite. Then, the corrosion was continued and Fe(OH)3 precipitation was produced below the shell. The particles aggregated and formed spheres. The pomegranate-shaped α-Fe2O3 was formed when the scorodite was hydrolyzed completely. The gas-sensing properties of α-Fe2O3 were investigated. The results showed that pomegranate-shaped α-Fe2O3 was responsive to a variety of gases, especially xylene. The value of Ra/Rg was 67.29 at 340 °C when the concentration of xylene was 1000 ppm. This indicated the pomegranate-shaped α-Fe2O3 has potential application as a xylene gas sensor.

RESUMEN

Nowadays, researchers have realized that microRNAs (miRNAs) are playing a significant role in many important biological processes and they are closely connected with various complex human diseases. However, since there are too many possible miRNA-disease associations to analyze, it remains difficult to predict the potential miRNAs related to human diseases without a systematic and effective method. In this study, we developed a Matrix Completion for MiRNA-Disease Association prediction model (MCMDA) based on the known miRNA-disease associations in HMDD database. MCMDA model utilized the matrix completion algorithm to update the adjacency matrix of known miRNA-disease associations and furthermore predict the potential associations. To evaluate the performance of MCMDA, we performed leave-one-out cross validation (LOOCV) and 5-fold cross validation to compare MCMDA with three previous classical computational models (RLSMDA, HDMP, and WBSMDA). As a result, MCMDA achieved AUCs of 0.8749 in global LOOCV, 0.7718 in local LOOCV and average AUC of 0.8767+/-0.0011 in 5-fold cross validation. Moreover, the prediction results associated with colon neoplasms, kidney neoplasms, lymphoma and prostate neoplasms were verified. As a consequence, 84%, 86%, 78% and 90% of the top 50 potential miRNAs for these four diseases were respectively confirmed by recent experimental discoveries. Therefore, MCMDA model is superior to the previous models in that it improves the prediction performance although it only depends on the known miRNA-disease associations.
