BACKGROUND: Information on infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Cutibacterium spp. is limited and new Duke-ISCVID criteria have not yet been properly assessed. We examined clinical characteristics, outcomes and performance of diagnostic tests for Cutibacterium valvular and cardiac implantable electronic device-related IE (CIED-IE). METHODS: Data corresponding to all episodes of Cutibacterium IE recorded from 2008 to 2023 in a prospective national cohort including 46 Spanish hospitals were examined. Possible IE cases were reassessed using the new criteria. The sensitivity of blood cultures, valvular and CIED cultures, and PCR of the 16SrRNA gene and sequencing (16SPCR) was evaluated. RESULTS: There were 67/6,692 (1%) episodes of IE caused by Cutibacterium spp., 85% affecting men. Of these, 50 were valve-related (45 prosthetic, 5 native) and 17 CIED-related. The new criteria identified 8 additional cases and reclassified 15 as definite IE. Intracardiac complications (abscess, pseudoaneurysm, perforation or intracardiac fistula) occurred in 23/50 (46%) valvular IE episodes, leading to 18% mortality, and up to 40% mortality if surgery was indicated but could not be performed. All CIED-IE cases underwent device removal and no deaths were recorded. Positive diagnosis rates for blood cultures, valve/device cultures and 16SPCR were 52%, 70% and 82%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Cutibacterium IE is a rare yet potentially life-threatening condition that warrants a high index of suspicion in men with endovascular prosthetic material. The new Duke-ISCVID criteria and molecular techniques are useful for its diagnosis. Considering a significant complication rate, cardiac surgery and removal of CIEDs play a key role in reducing mortality.

Health surveys allow exploring health indicators that are of great value from a public health point of view and that cannot normally be studied from regular health registries. These indicators are usually coded as ordinal variables and may depend on covariates associated with individuals. In this article, we propose a Bayesian individual-level model for small-area estimation of survey-based health indicators. A categorical likelihood is used at the first level of the model hierarchy to describe the ordinal data, and spatial dependence among small areas is taken into account by using a conditional autoregressive distribution. Post-stratification of the results of the proposed individual-level model allows extrapolating the results to any administrative areal division, even for small areas. We apply this methodology to describe the geographical distribution of a self-perceived health indicator from the Health Survey of the Region of Valencia (Spain) for the year 2016.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to assess long-term outcome in patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage admitted to the intensive care unit. METHODS: Mortality and Glasgow Outcome Scale, Barthel Index, and 5-level EQ-5D version (EQ-5D-5L) scores were analyzed in a multicenter cohort study of three Spanish hospitals (336 patients). Mortality was also analyzed in the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III (MIMIC-III) database. RESULTS: The median (25th percentile-75th percentile) age was 62 (50-70) years, the median Glasgow Coma Score was 7 (4-11) points, and the median Acute Physiology and Chronic Health disease Classification System II (APACHE-II) score was 21 (15-26) points. Hospital mortality was 54.17%, mortality at 90 days was 56%, mortality at 1 year was 59.2%, and mortality at 5 years was 66.4%. In the Glasgow Outcome Scale, a normal or disabled self-sufficient situation was recorded in 21.5% of patients at 6 months, in 25.5% of patients after 1 year, and in 22.1% of patients after 5 years of follow-up (4.5% missing). The Barthel Index score of survivors improved over time: 50 (25-80) points at 6 months, 70 (35-95) points at 1 year, and 90 (40-100) points at 5 years (p < 0.001). Quality of life evaluated with the EQ-5D-5L at 1 year and 5 years indicated that greater than 50% of patients had no problems or slight problems in all items (mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression). In the MIMIC-III study (N = 1354), hospital mortality was 31.83% and was 40.5% at 90 days and 56.2% after 5 years. CONCLUSIONS: In patients admitted to the intensive care unit with a diagnosis of nontraumatic intracerebral hemorrhage, hospital mortality up to 90 days after admission is very high. Between 90 days and 5 years after admission, mortality is not high. A large percentage of survivors presented a significant deficit in quality of life and functional status, although with progressive improvement over time. Five years after the hemorrhagic stroke, a survival of 30% was observed, with a good functional status seen in 20% of patients who had been admitted to the hospital.

Sound classification plays a crucial role in enhancing the interpretation, analysis, and use of acoustic data, leading to a wide range of practical applications, of which environmental sound analysis is one of the most important. In this paper, we explore the representation of audio data as graphs in the context of sound classification. We propose a methodology that leverages pre-trained audio models to extract deep features from audio files, which are then employed as node information to build graphs. Subsequently, we train various graph neural networks (GNNs), specifically graph convolutional networks (GCNs), GraphSAGE, and graph attention networks (GATs), to solve multi-class audio classification problems. Our findings underscore the effectiveness of employing graphs to represent audio data. Moreover, they highlight the competitive performance of GNNs in sound classification endeavors, with the GAT model emerging as the top performer, achieving a mean accuracy of 83% in classifying environmental sounds and 91% in identifying the land cover of a site based on its audio recording. In conclusion, this study provides novel insights into the potential of graph representation learning techniques for analyzing audio data.

The protein p32 (C1QBP) is a multifunctional and multicompartmental homotrimer that is overexpressed in many cancer types, including colon cancer. High expression levels of C1QBP are negatively correlated with the survival of patients. Previously, we demonstrated that C1QBP is an essential promoter of migration, chemoresistance, clonogenic, and tumorigenic capacity in colon cancer cells. However, the mechanisms underlying these functions and the effects of specific C1QBP protein inhibitors remain unexplored. Here, we show that the specific pharmacological inhibition of C1QBP with the small molecule M36 significantly decreased the viability rate, clonogenic capacity, and proliferation rate of different colon cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. The effects of the inhibitor of C1QBP were cytostatic and non-cytotoxic, inducing a decreased activation rate of critical pro-malignant and mitogenic cellular pathways such as Akt-mTOR and MAPK in RKO colon cancer cells. Additionally, treatment with M36 significantly affected the mitochondrial integrity and dynamics of malignant cells, indicating that p32/C1QBP plays an essential role in maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis. Altogether, our results reinforce that C1QBP is an important oncogene target and that M36 may be a promising therapeutic drug for the treatment of colon cancer.

This research describes the functionalization of polymer-matrix-trapping porphyrins, considering that the transcendental properties of meso-substituted porphyrins, such as optical and chemical stability, combined with the strength of the polymers, can produce photoactive advanced polymeric networks. Polystyrene (PS) and O,O´-bis-(2-aminopropyl)-polyethyleneglycol-300 (2NH2peg300, APEG), or their combination, were used to confine the meso-substituted porphyrin species 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4'-carboxy-1,1'-biphenyl-4-yl)porphyrin and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis((pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)porphyrin. The samples were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and fluorescence spectroscopies. The absorption and emission properties of the materials were compared to those of their respective porphyrin solutions. The fluorescence was preserved in the obtained composite through a mixture of polymers, PS, and APEG, yielding translucent polymeric networks. Moreover, analysis of individual polymeric assemblies by molecular docking was performed to support the understanding of the experimental findings. This analysis corroborates that the stronger the estimated binding energies, the stronger the interactions that occur between porphyrin and the polymer via non-polar covalent bonds.

Contact tracing is a non-pharmaceutical intervention (NPI) widely used in the control of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its effectiveness may depend on a number of factors including the proportion of contacts traced, delays in tracing, the mode of contact tracing (e.g. forward, backward or bidirectional contact training), the types of contacts who are traced (e.g. contacts of index cases or contacts of contacts of index cases), or the setting where contacts are traced (e.g. the household or the workplace). We performed a systematic review of the evidence regarding the comparative effectiveness of contact tracing interventions. 78 studies were included in the review, 12 observational (ten ecological studies, one retrospective cohort study and one pre-post study with two patient cohorts) and 66 mathematical modelling studies. Based on the results from six of the 12 observational studies, contact tracing can be effective at controlling COVID-19. Two high quality ecological studies showed the incremental effectiveness of adding digital contact tracing to manual contact tracing. One ecological study of intermediate quality showed that increases in contact tracing were associated with a drop in COVID-19 mortality, and a pre-post study of acceptable quality showed that prompt contact tracing of contacts of COVID-19 case clusters / symptomatic individuals led to a reduction in the reproduction number R. Within the seven observational studies exploring the effectiveness of contact tracing in the context of the implementation of other non-pharmaceutical interventions, contact tracing was found to have an effect on COVID-19 epidemic control in two studies and not in the remaining five studies. However, a limitation in many of these studies is the lack of description of the extent of implementation of contact tracing interventions. Based on the results from the mathematical modelling studies, we identified the following highly effective policies: (1) manual contact tracing with high tracing coverage and either medium-term immunity, highly efficacious isolation/quarantine and/ or physical distancing (2) hybrid manual and digital contact tracing with high app adoption with highly effective isolation/ quarantine and social distancing, (3) secondary contact tracing, (4) eliminating contact tracing delays, (5) bidirectional contact tracing, (6) contact tracing with high coverage in reopening educational institutions. We also highlighted the role of social distancing to enhance the effectiveness of some of these interventions in the context of 2020 lockdown reopening. While limited, the evidence from observational studies shows a role for manual and digital contact tracing in controlling the COVID-19 epidemic. More empirical studies accounting for the extent of contact tracing implementation are required.

The endoscopic transventricular transchoroidal approach facilitates entry into the posterior part of the third ventricle, allowing a visualization field from the foramen of Monro to the pineal region through this anatomical corridor. Combined surgery to treat the target lesion and possible endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) can be performed through a single burr hole. A detailed description of this surgical technique is given, and a series of cases from our center is presented. This retrospective study included patients with lesions in the pineal region or posterior zone of the third ventricle who underwent surgery between 2004 and 2022 in our center for tumor biopsy or endoscopic cyst fenestration. In nine cases, the transchoroidal approach was performed. Demographic and clinical variables were collected: sex, age at diagnosis, clinical presentation, characteristics of the lesion, pathological diagnosis, characteristics of the procedure, complications, subsequent treatments, evolution, follow-up time, and degree of success of the endoscopic procedure. The mean and range of the quantitative variables and frequency of the qualitative variables were analyzed, together with the statistical significance (p < 0.05). Surgical planning was carried out by performing a preoperative MRI, calculating the ideal entry point and trajectory for each case. The preoperative planning of the surgical technique is described in detail. Of our sample, 55.6% were women, with a mean age of 35 years (7-78). The most common clinical presentation was intracranial hypertension (55.6%), with or without a focus. Eight patients presented hydrocephalus at diagnosis. The most frequent procedure was endoscopic biopsy with ETV (66.7%). The pathological diagnosis varied widely. Procedure-related complications included one case of self-limited bleeding of the choroidal fissure at its opening and one intraventricular hemorrhage due to tumor bleeding in the postoperative period. Non-procedure-related complications comprised two ETV failures and one case of systemic infection, while late complications included one case of disease progression and one case of radionecrosis. Four patients died, one due to poor neurological evolution after post-surgical tumor bleeding and three due to causes unrelated to the procedure. The rest of the patients had a favorable evolution and were asymptomatic or stable. The transchoroidal approach through a single burr hole is a feasible and safe option for access to the posterior part of the third ventricle. Proper planning of each case is necessary to avoid complications.

The presence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) has been associated with the induction of drug resistance and disease recurrence after therapy. 5-Fluorouracil (5FU) is widely used as the first-line treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, its effectiveness may be limited by the induction of drug resistance in tumor cells. The Wnt pathway plays a key role in the development and CRC progression, but it is not clearly established how it is involved in CSCs resistance to treatment. This work aimed to investigate the role played by the canonical Wnt/ß-catenin pathway in CSCs resistance to 5FU treatment. Using tumor spheroids as a model of CSCs enrichment of CRC cell lines with different Wnt/ß-catenin contexts, we found that 5FU induces in all CRC spheroids tested cell death, DNA damage, and quiescence, but in different proportions for each one: RKO spheroids were very sensitive to 5FU, while SW480 were less susceptible, and the SW620 spheroids, the metastatic derivative of SW480 cells, displayed the highest resistance to death, high clonogenic capacity, and the highest ability for regrowth after 5FU treatment. Activating the canonical Wnt pathway with Wnt3a in RKO spheroids decreased the 5FU-induced cell death. But the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway inhibition with Adavivint alone or in combination with 5FU in spheroids with aberrant activation of this pathway produced a severe cytostatic effect compromising their clonogenic capacity and diminishing the stem cell markers expression. Remarkably, this combined treatment also induced the survival of a small cell subpopulation that could exit the arrest, recover SOX2 levels, and re-grow after treatment.

This article presents subjective norms for 1031 emojis in six dimensions: visual complexity, familiarity, frequency of use, clarity, emotional valence, and emotional arousal. This is the largest normative study conducted so far that relies on subjective ratings. Unlike the few existing normative studies, which mainly comprise face emojis, here we present a wide range of emoji categories. We also examine the correlations between the dimensions assessed. Our results show that, in terms of their affective properties, emojis are analogous to other stimuli, such as words, showing the expected U-shaped relationship between valence and arousal. The relationship between affective properties and other dimensions (e.g., between valence and familiarity) is also similar to the relationship observed in words, in the sense that positively valenced emojis are more familiar than negative ones. These findings suggest that emojis are suitable stimuli for studying affective processing. Emoji-SP will be highly valuable for researchers of various fields interested in emojis, including computer science, communication, linguistics, and psychology. In recent years, technological advances have revealed a large potential number of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs). Findings recognize lncRNAs as orchestrating molecules in a wide range of processes, at the transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels, although fewer studies address function. For differentiation, which consists of rearrangements in the gene expression profile and activation of stage- and cell type-dependent signaling mechanisms, the relevance of lncRNAs becomes crucial. The relationship between lncRNAs and key molecular factors in differentiation is strengthening; therefore the present review aims to comprehensively explain the role of lncRNAs in the signaling network involved in the main types of mesenchymal differentiation: adipogenesis, chondrogenesis, myogenesis, and osteogenesis. Notably, a step toward the integration of lncRNAs in the field of cell differentiation promises an exceptional impact.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a clinical syndrome characterised by raised intracranial pressure with no discernible aetiology. It is relatively rare in children and its demographic features may differ from those of adults. The relationship between IIH and venous sinus stenosis (VSS) is well known. As VSS plays an important role in the pathophysiology, treatments have been developed aimed at improving venous blood outflow in refractory IIH. In the last two decades, venous sinus stenting has emerged as a treatment option in cases where stenosis is documented. METHODS AND RESULTS: The scientific literature on paediatric cases of IIH and its treatment with venous sinus stenting was analysed. We present the case of a 6-year-old girl with a life-threatening presentation of IIH, who was treated with transverse sinus stenting and a lumboperitoneal shunt. We summarise the characteristic of paediatric stenting cases reported and review the literature focusing on the main aspects of venous sinus stenting. CONCLUSION: VSS stenting could be a treatment tool for the acute presentation of IIH with severe symptoms and VSS plus an elevated trans-stenotic pressure gradient. However, in some cases, additional surgical treatment may be necessary.

Although intraventricular neuroendoscopy is considered a minimally invasive technique with good results, there is nevertheless a risk of developing certain complications. As no agreement apparently exists concerning the classification of these complications, we aim to propose a form of classification based on the results of our series, comparing them with recent publications. We undertook a retrospective study of 170 children who underwent intraventricular neuroendoscopy between 2003 and September 2020 at our center. Data were recorded on demographic and clinical variables: age, gender, presenting symptoms, etiology, number of procedures, type of procedure, and complications. Complications were divided into two main groups, intraoperative and postoperative, and in subgroups. The intraoperative complications included one group of systemic alterations and another group of surgical problems. The postoperative complications were divided into six groups: systemic, neurologic, hormone, fluid, hemorrhagic and death. A total of 202 neuroendoscopic procedures were performed in 170 children. The mean age at first surgery was 71 months (22-122). The most common etiology of the hydrocephalus was intraventricular tumors (32.9%), followed by aqueductal stenosis (13.5%). The most usual presenting sign was intracranial hypertension. The procedure most used was third ventriculostomy (62.9%). During the procedures, we experienced 5 surgical intraoperative complications (2.47% per procedure). In the postoperative period, there were 23.7% systemic complications per procedure, 12.87% neurologic, 8.41% hormone, 10.9% fluid, 0.5% hemorrhagic, and 0.99% for postoperative death. The rate of complications associated with intraventricular neuroendoscopy was similar in our series to those already published. Comparative studies require standardization for the analysis of neuroendoscopic complications.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the role of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) in the treatment of pediatric chronic communicating congenital hydrocephalus (CCCH). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study comprised a series of 11 children with CCCH treated with ETV. Data were recorded on gender, history, presenting symptoms, age at surgery, complications during surgery, clinical evolution, ETV survival, and follow-up period. Radiological variables including ventricular and cephalic diameters were also recorded to determine a series of ventricular indexes in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after the ETV procedure. The procedure was considered to be successful when there was clinical stability or improvement accompanied by a reduction in the radiological indexes in the postoperative control images, such that there was no need to place an extrathecal cerebrospinal fluid shunt. RESULTS: Over a mean follow-up period of 35.8 months (range: 6-108 months) from the ETV procedure, three patients required shunt placement; one of these was due to early failure in an 8-month old girl, the only patient younger than 12 months in our series. The radiological indexes were reduced in all patients except for one of the cases of ETV failure. The mean ETV survival among the successful cases was 32.1 months (range: 6-108 months), whilst that of the failed cases was 16 months (range: 6-108 months). CONCLUSION: Although studies with larger sample sizes are needed, ETV appears to be a promising option for the treatment of this type of patient with CCCH.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Erenumab is a monoclonal antibody for the prophylactic treatment of migraine. We describe the first cases of xerostomia probably induced by this drug. CASE SUMMARY: We present two patients diagnosed with chronic migraine who started treatment with erenumab and presented with dry mouth after the first and second dose. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: Xerostomia is not described as an adverse reaction in the drug's technical datasheet. A search was made in PubMed including 'erenumab', 'fremanezumab', 'galcanezumab', 'xerostomia', and no results were found. It is necessary to identify this potential adverse reaction in order to estimate its prevalence and possible impact on patients' quality of life.

Several studies have been carried out in various languages to explore the role of the main psycholinguistic variables in word naming, mainly in nouns. However, reading of verbs has not been explored to the same extent, despite the differences that have been found between the processing of nouns and verbs. To reduce this research gap, we present here SpaVerb-WN, a megastudy of word naming in Spanish, with response times (RT) for 4562 verbs. RT were obtained from at least 20 healthy adult participants in a reading-aloud task. Several research questions on the role of syllable frequency, word length, neighbourhood, frequency, age of acquisition (AoA), and the novel variable 'motor content' in verb naming were also examined. Linear mixed-effects model analyses indicated that (1) RT increase in with increasing word length and with decreasing neighbourhood size, (2) syllable frequency does not show a significant effect on RT, (3) AoA mediates the effect of motor content, with a positive slope of motor content at low AoA scores and a negative slope at high AoA scores, and (4) there is an interaction between word frequency and AoA, in which the AoA effect for low-frequency verbs gradually decreases as frequency increases. The results are discussed in relation to existing evidence and in the context of the consistency of the spelling-sound mappings in Spanish.

The interactions between tetrasulfophthalocyanines and lysozyme were studied using fluorescence spectroscopic and computational analyses. Lysozyme has been found to be widely studied as an anticancer agent, however, there are few reports of its interaction with phthalocyanines. Fe(III) tetrasulfophthalocyanine (FeTSPc) and free base tetrasulfophthalocyanine (TSPc) used in this study, were synthesized by our research group. Experimental results suggested that the metalled complex FeTSPc has a much higher affinity than TSPc. The binding stoichiometry between each tetrasulfophthalocyanine and lysozyme was 1:1. Stern-Volmer analysis suggested that the fluorescence quenching proceedes through a static process. Binding thermodynamics (ΔG, ΔH and ΔS) confirmed that mainly hydrogen bonds, van der Waals, and electrostatic forces are responsible for the binding process. We carried out molecular dynamics simulations, molecular docking, and binding energy calculations. Molecular dynamics simulations yielded the most populated cluster of lysozyme structures, and a representative structure from this cluster was used for the docking studies with these phthalocyanines. 1000 poses were generated for each ligand. The strudtures of the resulting complexes revealed that Arg 73 and Arg 112 are important for the binding affinity of the tetrasulfophthalocyanines, generating mainly an electrostatic favorable environment for the SO3- groups. In addition, hydrophobic contacts were involved with Trp 62, Trp 63 and Trp 108, explaining the fluorescence quenching observed experimentally. Binding energies were determined for these models, confirming that the interactions with lysozyme were more favorable for FeTSPc compared to TSPc. The understanding of the molecular mechanisms is relevant to characterize the nature of tetrasulfophthalocyanines in photodynamic therapy.

We present EmoPro, a normative study of the emotion lexicon of the Spanish language. We provide emotional prototypicality ratings for 1286 emotion words (i.e., those that refer to human emotions such as "fear" or "happy"), belonging to different grammatical categories. This is the largest data set for this variable so far. Each word was rated by at least 20 participants, and adequate reliability and validity rates for prototypicality scores were found. We also provide new affective (valence, arousal, emotionality, happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, and anger) and psycholinguistic (Age-of-Acquisition, frequency and concreteness) ratings for those words without prior data in the extant literature, and analyze which of the given variables contribute the most to prototypicality. A factor analysis on the affective and psycholinguistic variables has shown that prototypicality loads in a factor associated to the emotional salience of words. Furthermore, a regression analysis reveals a significant role of both dimensional and discrete- emotion-related variables, as well as a modest effect of AoA and frequency on the prediction of prototypicality. Cross-linguistic comparisons show that the pattern obtained here is similar to that observed in other languages. EmoPro norms will be highly valuable for researchers in the field, providing them with a tool to select the most representative emotion words in Spanish for their experimental (e.g., for a comparison with emotion-laden words, such as "murder" or "party") or applied studies (e.g., to examine the acquisition of emotion words/concepts in children). Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is characterized by its variety of neurological manifestations and difficulty in diagnosis. In subacute cases, the main symptoms are secondary to increased intracranial pressure. This condition is associated with an extensive range of medical disorders, but only 2% are caused by a CNS infection in recent series. We report a 45-year-old patient, with no previous medical history, who developed a syndrome of increased intracranial pressure as the presentation of a cryptococcal meningoencephalitis (CM) complicated with a CVT. The patient was first diagnosed of a CVT, and later on, the VIH infection and the CM diagnosis were made. Despite being treated with anticoagulation, liposomal amphotericin B, and a therapeutic lumbar puncture, the patient continued to deteriorate and suffered a respiratory arrest secondary to the increased intracranial pressure, with subsequent brain death. Cryptococcus is an infrequent cause of CNS infection in developed countries, despite being the most frequent cause of meningits in adults in several countries with high rates of HIV infection. CVT is a very rare complication of CM which can contribute to worsen the increased intracranial pressure and in consequence, its prognosis and outcome. A high level of suspicion is needed for diagnosing CM as the underlying cause of CVT and the subsequent increased intracranial pressure should be managed exhaustively.

BACKGROUND: The most important predictor of unsuccessful bowel preparation is previous failure. For those patients with previous failure, we hypothesized that a nurse-led educational intervention by telephone shortly before the colonoscopy appointment could improve cleansing efficacy. METHODS: We performed a multicenter, endoscopist-blinded, randomized controlled trial. Consecutive outpatients with previous inadequate bowel preparation were enrolled. Both groups received the same standard bowel preparation protocol. The intervention group also received reinforced education by telephone within 48 hours before the colonoscopy. The primary outcome was effective bowel preparation according to the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale. Intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis included all randomized patients. Per-protocol analysis included patients who could be contacted by telephone and the control cases. RESULTS: 657 participants were recruited by 11 Spanish hospitals. In the ITT analysis, there was no significant difference between the intervention and control groups in the rate of successful bowel preparation (77.3 % vs. 72 %; P = 0.12). In the intervention group, 267 patients (82.9 %) were contacted by telephone. Per-protocol analysis revealed significantly improved bowel preparation in the intervention group (83.5 % vs. 72.0 %; P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Among all patients with previous inadequate bowel preparation, nurse-led telephone education did not result in a significant improvement in bowel cleansing. However, in the 83 % of patients who could be contacted, bowel preparation was substantially improved. Phone education may therefore be a useful tool for improving the quality of bowel preparation in those cases.
