RESUMEN

Indirect interactions via shared memory deposited on the field ("field memory") play an essential role in collective motions. Some motile species, such as ants and bacteria, use attractive pheromones to complete many tasks. Mimicking these kinds of collective behavior at the laboratory scale, we present a pheromone-based autonomous agent system with tunable interactions. In this system, colloidal particles leave phase-change trails reminiscent of the process of pheromone deposition by individual ants, and the trails attract other particles and themselves. To implement this, we combine two physical phenomena: the phase change of a Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) substrate by self-propelled Janus particles (pheromone deposition) and the AC (alternating current) electroosmotic (ACEO) flow generated by this phase change (pheromone attraction). Laser irradiation causes the GST layer to crystalize locally beneath the Janus particles, owing to the lens heating effect. Under AC field application, the high conductivity of the crystalline trail causes a field concentration and generates ACEO flow, and we introduce this flow as an attractive interaction between the Janus particles and the crystalline trail. By changing the AC frequency and voltage, we can tune the attractive flow, i.e., the sensitivity of the Janus particles to the trail, and the isolated particles undergo diverse states of motion, from self-caging to directional motion. A swarm of Janus particles also shows different states of collective motion, including colony formation and line formation. This tunability enables a reconfigurable system driven by a pheromone-like memory field.

α,α-trehalose is a well-known sugar that plays a key role in establishing tolerance to environmental stresses in many organisms, except unicellular eukaryotes. However, almost nothing is known about α,ß-trehalose, including their synthesis, function, and even presence in living organisms. In this study, we identified α,ß-trehalose in the resting cyst, a dormancy cell form characterized by extreme tolerance to environmental stresses, of the ciliated protist Colpoda cucullus, using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and a proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). Gene expression analysis revealed that the expression of trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (TPS), glycosyltransferase (GT), alpha-amylase (AMY), and trehalose transporter 1 (TRET1), were up-regulated in encystment, while the expression of α-glucosidase 2 (AG2) and trehalase (TREH) was up-regulated in excystment. These results suggest that α,ß-trehalose is synthesized during encystment process, while and contributes to extreme tolerances to environmental stressors, stored carbohydrates, and energy reserve during resting cyst and/or during excystment.

Multilayered structures of GeTe and Sb2Te3 phase change material, also referred to as interfacial phase change memory (iPCM), provide superior performance for nonvolatile electrical memory technology in which the atomically controlled structure plays an important role in memory operation. Here, we report on terahertz (THz) wave generation measurements. Three- and 20-layer iPCM samples were irradiated with a femtosecond laser, and the generated THz radiation was observed. The emitted THz pulse was found to be always p polarized independent of the polarization of the excitation pulse. Based on the polarization dependence as well as the flip of the THz field from photoexcited Sb2Te3 and Bi2Te3, the THz emission process can be attributed to the surge current flow due to the built-in surface depletion layer formed in p-type semiconducting iPCM materials.

We have systematically investigated the spatial and temporal dynamics of crystallization that occur in the phase-change material Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5} upon irradiation with an intense terahertz (THz) pulse. THz-pump-optical-probe spectroscopy revealed that Zener tunneling induces a nonlinear increase in the conductivity of the crystalline phase. This fact causes the large enhancement of electric field associated with the THz pulses only at the edge of the crystallized area. The electric field concentrating in this area causes a temperature increase via Joule heating, which in turn leads to nanometer-scale crystal growth parallel to the field and the formation of filamentary conductive domains across the sample.

RATIONALE: Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) signals and their endogenous inhibitor, suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3), in vascular endothelial cells (ECs) reportedly dominate the pathological angiogenesis. However, how these inflammatory signals are potentiated during pathological angiogenesis has not been fully elucidated. We suspected that an intracellular protease calpain, which composes the multifunctional proteolytic systems together with its endogenous inhibitor calpastatin (CAST), contributes to the JAK/STAT regulations. OBJECTIVE: To specify the effect of EC calpain/CAST systems on JAK/STAT signals and their relationship with pathological angiogenesis. METHODS AND RESULTS: The loss of CAST, which is ensured by several growth factor classes, was detectable in neovessels in murine allograft tumors, some human malignant tissues, and oxygen-induced retinopathy lesions in mice. EC-specific transgenic introduction of CAST caused downregulation of JAK/STAT signals, upregulation of SOCS3 expression, and depletion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-C, thereby counteracting unstable pathological neovessels and disease progression in tumors and oxygen-induced retinopathy lesions in mice. Neutralizing antibody against VEGF-C ameliorated pathological angiogenesis in oxygen-induced retinopathy lesions. Small interfering RNA-based silencing of endogenous CAST in cultured ECs facilitated µ-calpain-induced proteolytic degradation of SOCS3, leading to VEGF-C production through amplified interleukin-6-driven STAT3 signals. Interleukin-6-induced angiogenic tube formation in cultured ECs was accelerated by CAST silencing, which is suppressible by pharmacological inhibition of JAK/STAT signals, antibody-based blockage of VEGF-C, and transfection of calpain-resistant SOCS3, whereas transfection of wild-type SOCS3 exhibited modest angiostatic effects. CONCLUSIONS: Loss of CAST in angiogenic ECs facilitates µ-calpain-induced SOCS3 degradation, which amplifies pathological angiogenesis through interleukin-6/STAT3/VEGF-C axis.

PURPOSE: We used a Laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG)-micro system to examine the relationship between ocular blood flow and retinal vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) at retinopathy onset in oxygen-induced ischemic retinopathy (OIR) model rats. METHODS: Sixteen 50/10 OIR rats were compared with 17 control rats reared in room air. In postnatal day 14 (P14) and P18 rats, we measured and analyzed the left eye's mean blur rate (MBR) by setting a rubber band on the optic nerve head center, using the LSFG-Micro. At P18, the rats were sacrificed and their left-eye retinas were fixed, flat-mounted and stained with adenosine diphosphatase (ADPase). The right-eye retinas were homogenized; the lysate was centrifuged for an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The avascular area was measured as the percentage (%AVA) of the total retinal area. Retinal VEGF was measured by an ELISA. RESULTS: The examination's reproducibility was good. Our multivariate linear mixed model analysis revealed significantly high MBRs in the OIR rats (p = 0.0017). In the P18 OIR rats, significant correlations were seen between the MBR and %AVA (r = 0.80, p = 0.0002) and between the MBR and VEGF (r = 0.76, p = 0.0006). CONCLUSIONS: The LSFG-Micro provided reproducible blood flow measurements in neonatal rats. Because of the vitreous blood vessels, measurement of only the retinal vessels was not possible. However, the MBR was higher in the OIR rats than in the control rats, and the MBR and %AVA were correlated, as were the MBR and retinal VEGF. The MBR may thus serve as an indicator of OIR severity.

BACKGROUND: Preterm neonates are born while nephrogenesis is ongoing, and are commonly exposed to factors in a hyperoxic environment that can impair renal development. Oxidative stress has also been implicated in the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). The rat model of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) is the most clinically relevant model of ROP because its biologic features closely resemble those of ROP in preterm infants. We investigated impaired renal development in a rat model of OIR. METHODS: Newborn Sprague-Dawley rats were maintained in either a normoxic (room air, 21% O2 ; control group) or a controlled hyperoxic (80% O2 ; OIR group) environment from birth to postnatal day (P) 12. All pups were then raised in room air from P12 to P19. RESULTS: The hyperoxic environment led to significantly higher urinary excretion of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, a marker of oxidative DNA damage, and a reduction in nephrogenic zone width at P5 in OIR pups. Additionally, glomerular count was significantly reduced by 20% in the OIR group, and avascular and neovascular changes in the retina were observed only in the OIR group at P19. Messenger RNA levels of vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) and platelet-derived growth factor-ß, essential angiogenic cytokines for glomerulogenesis, in the renal cortex were significantly lower at P5 and significantly higher at P19 in the OIR group compared with controls. CONCLUSION: Renal impairment was caused by exposure to a hyperoxic environment during nephrogenesis, and the pathology of the impaired nephrogenesis in this OIR model reflects the characteristics of ROP observed in preterm infants.

AIMS: The importance of ethanol oxidation by intestinal aerobes and facultative anaerobes under aerobic conditions in the pathogenesis of ethanol-related colorectal cancer has been proposed. However, the role of obligate anaerobes therein remains to be established, and it is still unclear which bacterial species, if any, are most important in the production and/or elimination of carcinogenic acetaldehyde under such conditions. This study was undertaken to address these issues. METHODS: More than 500 bacterial strains were isolated from the faeces of Japanese alcoholics and phylogenetically characterized, and their aerobic ethanol metabolism was studied in vitro to examine their ability to accumulate acetaldehyde beyond the minimum mutagenic concentration (MMC, 50 µM). RESULTS: Bacterial strains that were considered to potentially accumulate acetaldehyde beyond the MMC under aerobic conditions in the colon and rectum were identified and referred to as 'potential acetaldehyde accumulators' (PAAs). Ruminococcus, an obligate anaerobe, was identified as a genus that includes a large number of PAAs. Other obligate anaerobes were also found to include PAAs. The accumulation of acetaldehyde by PAAs colonizing the colorectal mucosal surface could be described, at least in part, as the response of PAAs to oxidative stress. CONCLUSION: Ethanol oxidation by intestinal obligate anaerobes under aerobic conditions in the colon and rectum could also play an important role in the pathogenesis of ethanol-related colorectal cancer.

Multiferroics, materials in which both magnetic and electric fields can induce each other, resulting in a magnetoelectric response, have been attracting increasing attention, although the induced magnetic susceptibility and dielectric constant are usually small and have typically been reported for low temperatures. The magnetoelectric response usually depends on d-electrons of transition metals. Here we report that in [(GeTe)2(Sb2Te3) l ] m superlattice films (where l and m are integers) with topological phase transition, strong magnetoelectric response may be induced at temperatures above room temperature when the external fields are applied normal to the film surface. By ab initio computer simulations, it is revealed that the multiferroic properties are induced due to the breaking of spatial inversion symmetry when the p-electrons of Ge atoms change their bonding geometry from octahedral to tetrahedral. Finally, we demonstrate the existence in such structures of spin memory, which paves the way for a future hybrid device combining nonvolatile phase-change memory and magnetic spin memory.

The adhesion of bubbles underwater remains the greatest cause of malfunctions in applications such as microfluidics, medical devices and heat exchangers. There is therefore an emerging need for ultra-bubble-repellent surfaces. Inspired by fish scales, which show high bubble repellency due to their hydrophilic nature and surface microstructures, we propose a novel method for preparing ultra-bubble-repellent surfaces by the hydrophilic treatment of self-organized microstructures. When in contact with air bubbles underwater, the artificial hydrophilic microstructured surfaces had a higher contact angle and a lower adhesion force than a flat surface. The mechanism leading to these properties is also investigated. Our method for the fabrication of ultra-bubble-repellent, hydrophilic, microstructured surfaces is simple and cost-effective, opening the way for its application in artificial devices, such as the inner surfaces of tubes, medical devices, and heat exchangers.

High-performance catalysts and photovoltaics are required for building an environmentally sustainable society. Because catalytic and photovoltaic reactions occur at the interfaces between reactants and surfaces, the chemical, physical, and structural properties of interfaces have been the focus of much research. To improve the performance of these materials further, inorganic porous materials with hierarchic porous architectures have been fabricated. The breath figure technique allows preparing porous films by using water droplets as templates. In this study, a valuable preparation method for hierarchic porous inorganic materials is shown. Hierarchic porous materials are prepared from surface-coated inorganic nanoparticles with amphiphilic copolymers having catechol moieties followed by sintering. Micron-scale pores are prepared by using water droplets as templates, and nanoscale pores are formed between the nanoparticles. The fabrication method allows the preparation of hierarchic porous films from inorganic nanoparticles of various shapes and materials.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of abundant breast milk intake on rats model of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR). Neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to expand litters of 7 pups/litter (7-rats group) and 14 pups/litter (14-rats group). They were exposed to 80% oxygen from postnatal day (P) 0 to P12. Body weights were measured daily. At P13 and 18, rats were sacrificed, and the blood and eyes were collected. Retinal neovascularization (NV) score, total retinal area (TRA), avascular area (AVA), and vascularized area (VA) were measured in ADPase stained retinas. Retinal vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and serum insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) were measured using ELISA. Body weight gain was significantly greater in 7-rats group from P2. Serum IGF-1 levels at P13 and 18 were significantly higher in 7-rats group. Retinal VEGF and TRA at P18 were significantly larger in 7-rats group. NV score at P18 tended to be higher in 7-rats group. There was no significant difference in VA between the 2 groups at P13 and 18. Excess breast milk intake in OIR rat pups caused body weight gain and retinal development, whereas there was less effect on retinal vascularization in our study.

Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST), the most mature phase-change materials (PCM), functions as a recoding layer in nonvolatile memory and optical discs by contrasting the physical properties upon phase transition between amorphous and crystalline phases. However, GST faces challenges such as a large extinction coefficient (k) and low thermal stability of the amorphous phase. In this study, we introduce RuSbTe as a new PCM to address the GST concerns. Notably, the crystallization temperature of the amorphous RuSbTe is approximately 350 °C, significantly higher than GST. A one-order-of-magnitude increase in the resistivity contrast was observed upon phase transition. The crystalline (0.35-0.50 eV) and amorphous (0.26-0.37 eV) phases exhibit relatively small band gap values, resulting in substantial k. Although RuSbTe demonstrates a k difference of approximately 1 upon crystallization at the telecommunications C-band, the refractive index (n) difference is negligible. Unlike GST, which induces both phase retardation and amplitude modulation in its optical switch device, RuSbTe exhibits amplitude-only modulation. This study suggests that RuSbTe has the potential to enable new photonic computing devices that can independently control the phase and amplitude. Combining RuSbTe with phase-only modulators could open avenues for advanced applications.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Vildagliptin is one of the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors that have been shown to improve hyperglycemia in clinical trials among patients with type 2 diabetes. However, few studies have examined the efficacy of vildagliptin in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight patients with DKD received oral vildagliptin 50-100 mg/day. The duration of diabetes was 6.7±5.9 years and observation period was 23.6±9.8 months. Changes in fasting blood glucose, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and urine protein-to-creatinine ratio (UPCR) were studied before and after the administration of vildagliptin. RESULTS: Vildagliptin treatment significantly decreased fasting blood glucose and HbA1c, compared to baseline (132±56 mg/dl, p=0.036, 6.0±0.3, p=0.041, respectively). UPCR tended to be decreased, albeit without statistical significance. However, eGFR was decreased after the administration of vildagliptin. No significant adverse effects were observed in all patients during the study. CONCLUSION: Although the sample size was limited and the observation period was brief, vildagliptin was found to be an effective and reasonably well-tolerated treatment for patients with DKD.

Introduction: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is an important complication of diabetes as it results in end-stage renal disease; hence, several drugs have been developed for its treatment. However, even with treatment with renin-angiotensin system inhibitors and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors, the residual risk of DKD remains. While this risk is an issue, the renoprotective effects of finerenone, a novel non-steroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, are becoming evident. High proteinuria increases the risk of cardiovascular death as well as renal failure. Hence, it is especially important to address cases of urine protein to nephrotic levels in DKD, however, no previous studies have assessed the safety and efficacy of finerenone in patients with DKD and nephrotic syndrome. Therefore, this study aimed to assess whether finerenone has a renoprotective effect in advanced DKD complicated by nephrotic syndrome. Methods: Nine patients with DKD and nephrotic syndrome who received 10-20 mg/day of finerenone were retrospectively analyzed. The average observation period was 9.7 ± 3.4 months. Patients with serum potassium levels greater than 5.0 mEq/L at the start of finelenone were excluded. Changes in urinary protein levels, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and serum potassium levels were studied before and after finerenone administration. Results: The mean changes in the urinary protein creatinine ratio (UPCR) at baseline were 6.6 ± 2.0. After finerenone treatment, the mean UPCR decreased to -0.6 ± 3.9; however, this change was not statistically significant.The eGFR decline slope also tended to decrease with finerenone treatment (before vs. after: 3.1 ± 4.9 vs. -1.7 ± 3.2 mL/min/1.73 m2. Furthermore, finerenone did not increase serum potassium levels. Conclusions: Patients treated with finerenone showed decreased UPCR; hence, it is suggested that finerenone may be effective in treating nephrotic syndrome in patients with DKD. These findings may be applicable to real-world clinical settings. Nonetheless, it is important to note that this study was a retrospective analysis of a single-center cohort and had a limited sample size, highlighting the need for additional large-scale investigations.

RESUMEN

The burgeoning field of optoelectronic devices necessitates a mechanism that gives rise to a large contrast in the electrical and optical properties. A SmTe film with a NaCl-type structure demonstrates significant differences in resistivity (over 105) and band gap (approximately 1.45 eV) between as-deposited and annealed films, even in the absence of a structural transition. The change in the electronic structure and accompanying physical properties is attributed to a rigid-band shift triggered by a valence transition (VT) between Sm2+ and Sm3+. The stress field within the SmTe film appears closely tied to the mixed valence state of Sm, suggesting that stress is a driving force in this VT. By mixing the valence states, the formation energy of the low-resistive state decreases, providing nonvolatility. Moreover, the valence state of Sm can be regulated through annealing and device-operation processes, such as applying voltage and current pulses. This investigation introduces an approach to developing semiconductor materials for optoelectrical applications.

Phase-change materials such as Ge-Sb-Te (GST) exhibiting amorphous and crystalline phases can be used for phase-change random-access memory (PCRAM). GST-based PCRAM has been applied as a storage-class memory; however, its relatively low ON/OFF ratio and the large Joule heating energy required for the RESET process (amorphization) significantly limit the storage density. This study proposes a phase-change nitride, CrN, with a much wider programming window (ON/OFF ratio more than 105) and lower RESET energy (one order of magnitude reduction from GST). High-resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed a phase-change from the low-resistance cubic CrN phase into the highly resistive hexagonal CrN2 phase induced by the Soret-effect. The proposed phase-change nitride could greatly expand the scope of conventional phase-change chalcogenides and offer a strategy for the next-generation of PCRAM, enabling a large ON/OFF ratio (∼105), low switching energy (∼100 pJ), and fast operation (∼30 ns).

BackgroundLittle information is available on the role of community-based rehabilitation after a nuclear disaster. Here, we report the case of an older couple living in an area repopulated after the Fukushima nuclear disaster of 2011 who received outpatient rehabilitation.Case presentationAn 84-year-old woman underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) after she fell and sustained a trochanteric fracture while caring for her husband with Alzheimer's disease. The 85-year-old husband experienced worsening behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) following his wife's hospitalization. The couple received rehabilitation at an outpatient facility in a nearby village using a shuttle service. The woman's postoperative anxiety was relieved and her physical function improved. Moreover, the husband's BPSD symptoms decreased.ConclusionA wife and husband showed improvement in physical function after THA and alleviation of BPSD, respectively, following rehabilitation. In post-disaster, resource-scarce areas, older adults may benefit from utilizing the outpatient rehabilitation services available in the surrounding area.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Sacubitril/valsartan (SV), a novel pharmacological class of angiotensin receptor neprilysin inhibitors, is effective in treating heart failure (HF) by inhibiting the degradation of natriuretic peptides and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. However, no studies have observed the long-term effects of SV on patients with HF and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) undergoing hemodialysis (HD) over a long period. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This single-center retrospective study of 21 months duration involved consecutive patients with HF and preserved LVEF undergoing HD, who received 50-200 mg/day. All patients were followed up regularly, and clinical, biochemical, and echocardiographic parameters were recorded at baseline and during follow-up. The efficacy and safety of SV were also analyzed. RESULTS: This longitudinal study included nine patients, with a median age of 76 years. The median HD duration was 7 years. At baseline, the mean brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) was 133±73.6 pg/ml and that of LVEF was 66%±9%. After SV therapy, the systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate decreased, albeit without statistical significance. BNP levels, LVEF, left atrial anteroposterior dimension, and left ventricular mass index did not change, compared to baseline values. No adverse effects were observed in any of the patients. CONCLUSION: SV tended to decrease blood pressure and heart rate in patients with HF and preserved LVEF undergoing HD but did not alter cardiac function assessments, such as BNP or echocardiography.

Porous surface patterns are used in a wide variety of practical applications. Honeycomb-patterned porous polymer films are good templates for preparing porous surfaces due to their simple fabrication and the arrangement of pores on the surface. Catechol groups include in adhesive protein of mussels have attracted much attention due to their highly and substrate-independent adhesive properties. In this paper, highly and substrate-independent adhesive honeycomb-patterned porous polymer films are prepared by using amphiphilic copolymer having catechol moieties. Furthermore, porous surface patterns are transferred on various organic or inorganic substrates by wet etching with using adhesive honeycomb films as templates.
