BACKGROUND: Imatinib resistance remains a major obstacle in the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Crocin (CRC) and astaxanthin (ATX) are phytochemicals with anti-cancer properties. AIMS: This study aimed to explore the effects of combination treatment of Imatinib with CRC and ATX on Imatinib-resistant K562 (IR-K562) cells. METHODS AND RESULTS: After the establishment of IR-K562 cells, growth inhibitory activity was determined by the MTT assay. To test the regeneration potential, a colony formation assay was performed. Cell cycle analyses were examined by flow cytometry. Cell injury was evaluated by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage. Real-time PCR was applied to assess the expression of IL6, TNF-α, STAT3, BAD, CASP3, TP53, and Bcl-2 genes. Caspase-3 activity was determined by a colorimetric assay. Antioxidant activity was measured using a diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. After 48 h of treatment, ATX (IC50 = 30µM) and CRC (IC50 = 190µM) significantly inhibited cell proliferation and colony formation ability, induced G1 cell cycle arrest and cell injury, upregulated the expression of apoptosis-associated genes, and downregulated the expression of anti-apoptotic and inflammatory genes. The combination of IM with ATX and/or CRC synergistically reduced cell viability (combination index [CI] < 1). CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that IM shows better therapeutic efficacy at lower doses when combined with ATX and/or CRC.

BACKGROUND: There is a strong association between hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, inflammation and the onset and progression of diabetes which causes a higher risk of cancer. This study investigated, the effect of concomitant use of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) with iron supplements in hyper-glucose conditions on the K-562 cell line. METHODS: The effects of iron, ω-3 PUFAs, and a combination of both on K-562 cells were investigated under normal and high glucose conditions. The impact of these treatments was evaluated using multiple methodologies, including the MTT assay for cell viability, quantification of oxidative stress markers [total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondialdehyde (MDA)], and analysis of the cell cycle. Furthermore, the expression levels of TNFα and p53 mRNA were measured using Real-time PCR. RESULTS: The co-treatment of ω-3 PUFAs and iron in the presence of high glucose had notable effects, as evidenced by an increase in cell survival, resistance to imatinib chemotherapy, TNFαmRNA expression levels, MDA levels, and percentage of cells in the G2/S phase. Additionally, there was a decrease in the mRNA expression of p53 and TAC levels compared to treatment in the normal-glucose condition. CONCLUSION: Hyperglycemic conditions in conjunction with the combined treatment of theω-3 PUFAs and iron, led to reduced anticancer capacity, chemosensitivity, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the K-562 cells. These effects were found to be mediated by oxidative stress.

INTRODUCTION: The association between neuropathological changes and dementia among centenarians and nonagenarians remains unclear. METHODS: We examined brain tissue from 100 centenarians and 297 nonagenarians from The 90+ Study, a community-based longitudinal study of aging. We determined the prevalence of 10 neuropathological changes and compared their associations with dementia and cognitive performance between centenarians and nonagenarians. RESULTS: A total of 59% of centenarians and 47% of nonagenarians had at least four neuropathological changes. In centenarians, neuropathological changes were associated with higher odds of dementia and, compared to nonagenarians, the odds were not attenuated. For each additional neuropathological change, the Mini-Mental State Examination score was lower by 2 points for both groups. DISCUSSION: Neuropathological changes continue to be strongly related to dementia in centenarians, highlighting the importance of slowing or preventing the development of multiple neuropathological changes in the aging brain to maintain cognitive health. HIGHLIGHTS: Individual and multiple neuropathological changes are frequent in centenarians. These neuropathological changes are strongly associated with dementia. There is no attenuation of this association with age.

BACKGROUND: In spite of the great progress in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) treatment, a large number of patients still suffer from chemotherapy drug toxicity. As a routine medication for ALL treatment, cytarabine (Ara-C) has many side effects on the patients. Astaxanthin (ASX), on the other hand, is a carotenoid with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. PURPOSE: The present study investigated the effects of ASX in combination with Ara-C on cell proliferation, apoptosis induction, and cell cycle arrest in NALM-6 cell line. METHODS: NALM6 cells were treated with different concentrations of ASX, Ara-C, and their co-treatment. Cytotoxic effects were evaluated using MTT assay. After treating the cells with the IC50 dose of ASX, Ara-C and their co-treatment, we studied apoptosis induction, cell cycle arrest, and expression of apoptotic, anti-apoptotic, and inflammatory genes. RESULT: MTT assay demonstrated that co-treatment of cytarabine and ASX had greater cytotoxicity effects compared with the IC50 dose of Ara-C alone. After 48 h of treatment of NALM-6 cells with the combination dose, expression levels of apoptotic genes (P53, caspase-8, 3), the anti-apoptotic gene (Bcl-xL) and inflammatory genes (IL-6, TNF-α) changed significantly compared to the untreated group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Co-treatment of ASX and Ara-C has synergism effects on apoptosis pathways, cell proliferation inhibition, and decreased inflammation.

Language impairments caused by stroke (post-stroke aphasia, PSA) and neurodegeneration (primary progressive aphasia, PPA) have overlapping symptomatology, nomenclature and are classically divided into categorical subtypes. Surprisingly, PPA and PSA have rarely been directly compared in detail. Rather, previous studies have compared certain subtypes (e.g. semantic variants) or have focused on a specific cognitive/linguistic task (e.g. reading). This study assessed a large range of linguistic and cognitive tasks across the full spectra of PSA and PPA. We applied varimax-rotated principal component analysis to explore the underlying structure of the variance in the assessment scores. Similar phonological, semantic and fluency-related components were found for PSA and PPA. A combined principal component analysis across the two aetiologies revealed graded intra- and intergroup variations on all four extracted components. Classification analysis was used to test, formally, whether there were any categorical boundaries for any subtypes of PPA or PSA. Semantic dementia formed a true diagnostic category (i.e. within group homogeneity and distinct between-group differences), whereas there was considerable overlap and graded variations within and between other subtypes of PPA and PSA. These results suggest that (i) a multidimensional rather than categorical classification system may be a better conceptualization of aphasia from both causes; and (ii) despite the very different types of pathology, these broad classes of aphasia have considerable features in common.

RESUMEN

From the aerial parts of Cleome khorassanica Bunge & Bien, a new 3-oxo-4-oxa-A-homo-25,26,27-trinordammarano-24,20-lactone triterpene (1), a new natural product 20,25-dihydroxy-3-oxodammarane triterpene (2), together with known 5-hydroxy-3,6,7,8,3',4',5'-heptamethoxyflavone (3), have been isolated and characterized. The chemical structure of the new compounds was determined by 1D and 2D NMR and HR tandem MS measurements. All three compounds were subjected to biological tests for evaluation of their cytotoxicity against prostate (DU-145 and LNCaP) cancer cells. Compounds 1, 2, and 3 showed cell growth inhibition in a dose dependent manner against DU-145 and LNCaP cells.

The secretory production of heterologous proteins in E. coli has revolutionized biotechnology. Efficient periplasmic production of foreign proteins in E. coli often requires a signal peptide to direct proteins to the periplasm. However, the presence of attached signal peptide does not guarantee periplasmic expression of target proteins. Overproduction of auxiliary proteins, such as chaperones can be a useful approach to enhance protein export. In the current study, three chaperone plasmid sets, including GroEL-GroES (GroELS), Dnak-Dnaj-GrpE (DnaKJE), and trigger factor (TF), were coexpressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3) in a pairwise manner with two pET22-b vectors carrying the recombinant hirudin-PA (Hir) gene and different signal sequences alkaline phosphatase (PhoA) and l-asparaginase II (l-ASP). Overexpression of cytoplasmic combinations of molecular chaperones containing GroELS and DnaKJE with PhoAHir increased the secretory production of PhoAHir by 2.6fold (p < 0.05) and 3.5fold (p < 0.01) compared with their controls, respectively. By contrast, secretory production of PhoAHir significantly reduced in the presence of overexpressed TF (p = 0.02). Further, periplasmic expression of l-ASP was significantly increased only in the presence of DnaKJE (p = 0.04). These findings suggest that using molecular chaperones can be helpful for improving periplasmic expression of Hir. However, tagged signal peptides may affect the physicochemical properties and secondary and tertiary structures of mature Hir, which may alter their interactions with chaperones. Hence, using overexpressed chaperones has various effects on secretory production of PhoAHir and l-ASPHir.

BACKGROUND: Scientific cooperation is one of the effective methods to access current knowledge and technologies and also to use successful experiences of researchers in developed countries by academicians living in developing countries. This study aimed to determine the level of international contribution in compilation of scientific articles in Iranian journals published in the field of environmental health engineering. METHODS: This descriptive and retrospective study was conducted within a 10-year period (2008-2017), in which all articles published in five specialized Iranian journals of environmental health engineering were reviewed using a researcher-made checklist. The information collected in the checklist included: the year of publication, number of issues and articles, information about the status of authors' participation in terms of number of authors, sex, institutional affiliation, country, continents, and research centers. Descriptive and inferential statistics such as index of dispersion, measures of central tendency, and Chi-square and t tests were used to statistically analyze the data. Besides, VOSviewer software was used to visualize the data. RESULTS: The review of 1276 articles published in 102 issues of the five journals of environmental health engineering in Iran showed that 184 articles were written with the participation of researchers from other countries. Most articles with the participation of international authors during the last decade were published in 2014. Chi-square test indicated a significant difference in the publication of these articles within 2014-2015 than other years (P = 0.001). Among the five journals, the best participation of international researchers was observed in J Environ Health Sci Engineer (168 articles, 91.3%). Considering the number of joint articles with Iran, the top continents were Asia, Europe, and Africa each with 117, 52, and 32 articles, respectively. India, Turkey, and Malaysia had the highest level of cooperation with Iranian researchers with 53, 16, and 14 articles, respectively. 637 authors contributed in 184 articles, of whom 469 (73.6%) were male and 121 (18.9%) were female. T test was used to compare the mean number of male and female authors in the articles with or without the participation of international researchers, which showed no significant difference. CONCLUSION: International contribution of researchers in compilation of specialized environmental health articles was good. Given the low level of cooperation between researchers from developed European and American countries and their Iranian counterparts, it seems necessary to adopt different methods to attract more collaboration from researchers working in developed countries considering their significant role in health-related areas.

Pistachio wood-derived activated carbon prepared by a two-stage process (PWAC-2), conducting two consecutive chemical activation processes with NH4NO3 and NaOH, respectively. The results showed that explosive characteristic of NH4NO3 can primarily be employed to produce a char, with a large surface area and a highly-ordered pore structure, which can be subjected to a second activation process with NaOH to prepare a more suitable activated carbon, with a highly porous structure and useful functional groups, for removal of lead ions from aqueous media. An L25 Taguchi experimental design was used by varying impregnation ratio, activation time and temperature in both pre- and post-activation stages, and the results showed that, in both stages, a small activating agent/precursor and a proportional low activation time suffice for preparation of an advantageous activated carbon for Pb(II) adsorption. A comprehensive study was performed on the equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of Pb(II) adsorption by the new activated carbon. The results exhibited that, having had a high lead adsorption capacity (190.2 mg g-1), a high adsorption rapidness, and thermodynamic favorability, PWAC-2 is a beneficial alternative for utilization in full-scale plants of lead removal from waters and wastewaters.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the accuracy of three-point compression ultrasonography (3PCUS) performed for the diagnosis of proximal deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) in Emergency Department (ED) compared with the results of duplex US (DUS) (whole-leg compression ultrasound). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current prospective cross-sectional study with diagnostic test assessment was conducted on adult patients who were referred to the ED of a general teaching hospital in Shiraz, southern part of Iran (September 2016-May 2017), suspected of lower-extremity DVT, using a convenience sampling. The results of 3PCUS performed by ED residents were compared with the results of DUS performed by the radiology residents, which was considered as a criterion standard. RESULTS: A total of 240 patients were enrolled, with a mean (standard deviation) age of 59.46 (16.58). 3PCUS has a sensitivity and a specificity of 100% (95% confidence interval [CI], 96.55%-100%) and 93.33% (95% CI, 87.72%-96.91%), respectively, in comparison with DUS (whole-leg compression ultrasound). Negative predictive value and positive predictive value were 100% and 92.11% (95% CI, 86.12%-95.64%), respectively, with an accuracy of 96.25% (95% CI, 93%-98.27%). CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that 3PCUS of the lower extremities with a portable US machine, performed by the ED's residents, can accurately identify the presence or absence of lower-extremity DVT.

Ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) with explosive characteristics at high temperatures was used as a novel activating reagent to prepare a surface-engineered activated carbon derived from pistachio wood wastes (PWAC). PWAC was characterized and compared with commercial activated carbon (CAC) by textural and morphological properties, surface chemistry, crystal structure, and surface elemental composition. The results indicated that the optimal conditions of PWAC preparation to obtain the highest mercury adsorption capacity were pyrolysis temperature (800 °C), pyrolysis time (2 h), and impregnation ratio (5%). PWAC was of highly regular-shaped and well-developed pores and possessed a large surface area (1448 m2/g) and high total pore volume (0.901 cm3/g). The batch experiments indicated that the adsorption process of Hg(II) was strongly dependent on the solution pH and reached fast equilibrium at approximately 30 min. PWAC (202 mg/g) exhibited a significantly higher maximum adsorption capacity than commercial activated carbon (66.5 mg/g). Adsorbent-adsorbate dispersion interaction plays a major role in the adsorption mechanism, compared to the minor role played by pore filling and reduction mechanism. Overall, ammonium nitrate can be considered a newer activating reagent to prepare promising and low-cost PWAC for effectively Hg(II) removal from water media.

Objective: to explore the relationship between risk of falling at age 90+ and prior physical activity at age 60-70s. Design: population-based cohort study (The 90+ Study). Setting: California retirement community. Participants: of 1596 cohort members, 1536 had both falls and prior activity data. Mean age = 94 years; 78% female; 99% Caucasian. Methods: time spent in active physical activity was self-reported in 1980s; medical history, medication, assistive devices, residence type, and falls (outcome) was collected in 2000s. Activity/fall relationships were assessed using logistic regression. Results: falls were reported by 52% of participants, recurrent falls by 32%, and severe injury by 21% of fallers. In univariate analyses risk of falling at age 90+ was significantly related to medical history (heart disease, TIA/stroke, arthritis, vision disease, depression, dementia), medication use (hypnotics, anti-psychotics, anti-depressants), use of assistive devices (cane, walker, wheelchair), residence type (living with relatives, sheltered living), and source of information (self-report vs informant). Risks of falling and recurrent falls at age 90+ were 35-45% lower in those reporting 30+ minutes/day of active physical activity at age 60-70s compared with no activity. The odds ratio of falling was 0.65 (95% CI = 0.44-0.97) for 30-45 minutes/day and 0.64 (0.44-0.94) for 1+ hour/day adjusting for age, sex, medical history (stroke/TIA, vision disease, depression), use of assistive devices, and source of information. Conclusions and Relevance: falls are extremely common among the oldest-old and a significant proportion lead to severe injury. This work is the first to show an association between exercise at age 60-70s and lower risk of falling at age 90+.

RESUMEN

Shahr-e Sukhteh (meaning burnt city in Persian) in Iran is an archeological site dated back to around 3,200-1,800 BC. It is located in Sistan and Baluchistan Province of Iran and known as the junction of Bronze Age trade routes crossing the Iranian plateau. It was appointed as current study area for paleoparasitological investigations. Excavations at this site have revealed various archeological materials since 1967. In the present study, sheep and carnivore coprolites excavated from this site were analyzed by means of rehydration technique using TSP solution for finding helminth eggs. Dicrocoelium dendriticum, Capillaria sp., and Taenia sp. eggs were identified, while some other objects similar to Anoplocephalidae and Toxocara spp. eggs were also retrieved from the samples but their measured parameters did not match those of these species. The present paper illustrates the first paleoparasitological findings of Bronze Age in eastern Iran supporting the economic activities, peopling, and communication as well as the appropriate condition for zoonotic helminthiasis life cycle in Shahr-e Sukhteh archeological site.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis is a common disorder in adults and children alike and appears to be on the increase. The purpose of this study was to determine the sensitization trends in Iranian children with contact dermatitis. METHODS: The result of 109 patch tests performed using the 24 allergens of the European Standard Series in patients below 18 years old from September 2007 to March 2009 were recorded and analyzed. The tests were evaluated at 48 and 72 h after performing. RESULTS: The study population consisted of 72 (66.1 %) females and 37 (33.9 %) males. Hands were the most commonly affected anatomic site. In the final evaluation of the tests on day three, 51 (46.8 %) individuals showed a positive reaction to at least one allergen. Females were significantly more likely to show a positive response to at least one allergen (p-value = 0.031, odds ratio: 2.46). The most common allergens were nickel sulfate, cobalt, methylisothiazolinone, and colophony with 21 (19.3 %), 11 (10.1 %), 7 (6.4 %), and 6 (5.5 %) positive reactions, respectively. Contact allergy to nickel sulfate was more common in females than males (23.6 % vs. 10.8 %). There was no statistically significant relationship between personal or family history of atopy and a positive reaction to patch testing. The clinical and practical relevance were assessed for nickel and cobalt with a clinical current relevance in 11 (52.3 %) and 4 (36.4 %), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Nickel sulfate, cobalt, methylisothiazolinone, and colophony are the most common allergens responsible for induction of allergic contact dermatitis in Iranian children and adolescents. Females tended to show more positive reactions to allergens.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The effect of image quality or dental specialties on the subjective judgment of facial beauty has not been evaluated in any study. This study assessed the effect of digital sensors and specialties on the perception of smile beauty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the first phase of this double-blind clinical trial, 40 female smile photographs (taken from dental students) were evaluated by a panel of three prosthodontists, six orthodontists, and three specialists in restorative dentistry to select the most beautiful smiles. In the second phase, the 20 students having the most appealing smiles were again photographed in standard conditions, but this time with three different digital sensors: full-frame 21.1-megapixel, half-frame 18.0-megapixel, and compact 10.4-megapixel. The same panel judged smile beauty on a visual analog scale. The referees were blinded to the type of sensors, and the images were all coded. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests (α = 0.05 and 0.0167). RESULTS: The mean scores for full-frame, half-frame, and compact sensors were 6.70 ± 1.30, 4.56 ± 1.29, and 4.40 ± 1.39 [out of 10], respectively (Kruskal-Wallis p < 0.0001). The differences between the full-frame and the other sensors were statistically significant (Mann-Whitney p < 0.01); however, the difference between the half-frame and compact sensors was not statistically significant (p > 0.1). Sensors (ANOVA p < 0.00001) but not specialties (p = 0.687) affected the perception of beauty. CONCLUSIONS: According to the results of this study, image quality affected the perception of smile beauty. The full-frame sensor produced consistently better results and was recommended over half-frame and compact sensors. Dentists of different specialties might have similar standards of smile beauty, although this needs further assessment.

Although magnetic resonance imaging is a standard investigation in neurodegenerative disease, sensitive and specific markers for the underlying histopathological diagnosis are largely lacking. This report presents evidence to indicate that corticobasal degeneration and progressive supranuclear palsy, in particular, might be identifiable at a single subject level with diffusion tensor imaging. Patients with clinical diagnoses of Alzheimer's disease, semantic dementia and non-fluent primary progressive aphasia (n = 9 each) were contrasted with control subjects (n = 26) with the diffusion tensor imaging measures: fractional anisotropy, axial and radial diffusivity. At 1 year follow-up, all participants with non-fluent primary progressive aphasia had evolved either corticobasal degeneration (n = 5) or progressive supranuclear palsy (n = 4). The corticobasal degeneration/progressive supranuclear palsy set showed white matter abnormalities involving the entire cerebrum. Individual maps were similar to the group level results, even in the most minimally impaired patients. Fractional anisotropy was consistently the most sensitive metric. In Alzheimer's disease and semantic dementia, by contrast, group level and individual analyses revealed limited areas of abnormality centred on the posterior cingulate and rostral temporal lobes, respectively. In both groups radial diffusivity was the most sensitive metric. Scrutiny of the standard scores for each group's most sensitive metric revealed that, although the values for every patient with corticobasal degeneration or progressive supranuclear palsy fell outside 95% of the normal mean, none of the other two groups' members had values outside this range. Further underscoring the hypothesis that this finding relates specifically to a diffuse pathological process in the white matter of the tauopathies, and is not merely a function of disease severity, a grey matter analysis consisting of group level voxel-based morphometry revealed only focal areas of atrophy in all three groups. Consistent with past reports for the respective clinical syndromes, these were centred on the left frontal operculum and caudate nucleus in non-fluent primary progressive aphasia (the corticobasal degeneration/progressive supranuclear palsy set), anterior temporal lobes in semantic dementia, and hippocampus and posterior cingulate gyrus in Alzheimer's disease. Detection of this extensive white matter lesion in corticobasal degeneration and progressive supranuclear palsy-a pathologically proven feature of these conditions--in single subjects with diffusion tensor imaging appears to have strong diagnostic marker potential for these diseases.

RESUMEN

In medicinal chemistry there is a growing interest in using small molecules, including plant stress hormones. Jasmonic acid (JA) and its volatile methyl ester (MJ), collectively termed jasmonates, are lipid-derived cyclopentanone compounds that occur ubiquitously and exclusively in the plant kingdom. This review covers the synthesis, usage, and biological activities of JA and its derivatives. A brief overview of the available information on JA and its features is given, followed by a detailed review of JA and its derivatives as drugs and prodrugs; the properties in plants and the synthesis in recent patents are described. This review shows the direction of long-term drug/nutraceutical safety trials and provides insights for future research in this area. Research on JA continues to be of major interest. Recent innovations offer hope for the development of new therapeutics in related fields. It is anticipated that several analogs can be advanced to preclinical and clinical studies.

The binary effect of pulverized fuel ash (PFA) and palm oil fuel ash (POFA) on heat of hydration of aerated concrete was studied. Three aerated concrete mixes were prepared, namely, concrete containing 100% ordinary Portland cement (control sample or Type I), binary concrete made from 50% POFA (Type II), and ternary concrete containing 30% POFA and 20% PFA (Type III). It is found that the temperature increases due to heat of hydration through all the concrete specimens especially in the control sample. However, the total temperature rises caused by the heat of hydration through both of the new binary and ternary concrete were significantly lower than the control sample. The obtained results reveal that the replacement of Portland cement with binary and ternary materials is beneficial, particularly for mass concrete where thermal cracking due to extreme heat rise is of great concern.

CONTEXT: Prangos ferulacea (L.) Lindl. (Apiaceae) is a perennial plant found in the Middle-East, where it is commonly used as an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory agent. It is a rich source of coumarins. OBJECTIVE: To purify several coumarins from P. ferulacea and to screen their cytotoxicity and anti-herpes activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Acetone extract of roots of P. ferulacea was subjected to several chromatographic separations to render pure coumarins (1-8). Anti-herpes virus effects of 1-7 were evaluated at concentration 2.5, 5, and 10 µgmL(-1), on a confluent monolayer of Vero cells infected with 25 PFU of HSV1. Cytotoxic effects of 1 and 2 were evaluated on an A2780S cell line using the MTT assay. The cells were exposed to a series of concentrations of coumarins (0.01-2.5 mM, 37°C, 72 h). RESULTS: Compounds 1-8 were identified as osthole, isoimperatorin, oxypeucedanin, psoralen, oxypeucedanin hydrate, gosferol, oxypeucedanin methnolate, and pranferol. This is the first report of occurrence of 4 and 7 in this plant. Compound 1 showed a viability of 9.41% ± 2.4 at 2.5 mM on A2780S cells (IC50 = 0.38 mM). The cell survival of 2 at 2.5 mM was 46.86% ± 5.5 with IC50 equal to 1.1 mM. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Compound 1 shows cytotoxic effects on the A2780S cell line. Compound 2 is a cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor and the A2780S cell line does not express COX-2 which may interpret the non-toxic effect of the compound on this cell line. None of the tested compounds showed an anti-HSV effect at non-toxic concentrations.

Backgrounds: Seaweeds are an important source of marine organisms that produce a lot of bioactive compounds. Materials and Methods: In this research, the seaweed Sargassum angustifolium was collected from Bushehr province of Persian Gulf of Iran. The seaweed was extracted by methanol:ethyl acetate (1:1) using maceration method. The compounds were isolated with different column chromatography and HPLC(High Performance Liquid Chromatography) by silica gel and hexane:ethyl acetate as mobile phase. Results: The isolated compounds were elucidated structurally by various 1 and 2 D-NMR and MS spectra. Besides the cytotoxicity test was done against HeLa using standard MTT assay and normal cells. Conclusion: It afforded four known sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerides and fucosterol. Compounds 1-5 showed cytotoxic effects against HeLa and HUVEC cell lines, with IC50 values of 12.2 ± 2.3, 25.8 ± 3.7, 14.9 ± 2.6, 9.8 ± 1.2 µM, and 5.6 ± 1.2, respectively.
