OBJECTIVE: This study comprehensively analyzed the temporal and spatial dynamics of COVID-19 cases and deaths within the obstetric population in Brazil, comparing the periods before and during mass COVID-19 vaccination. We explored the trends and geographical patterns of COVID-19 cases and maternal deaths over time. We also examined their correlation with the SARS-CoV-2 variant circulating and the social determinants of health. STUDY DESIGN: This is a nationwide population-based ecological study. METHODS: We obtained data on COVID-19 cases, deaths, socioeconomic status, and vulnerability information for Brazil's 5570 municipalities for both the pre-COVID-19 vaccination and COVID-19 vaccination periods. A Bayesian model was used to mitigate indicator fluctuations. The spatial correlation of maternal cases and fatalities with socioeconomic and vulnerability indicators was assessed using bivariate Moran. RESULTS: From March 2020 to June 2023, a total of 23,823 cases and 1991 maternal fatalities were recorded among pregnant and postpartum women. The temporal trends in maternal incidence and mortality rates fluctuated over the study period, largely influenced by widespread COVID-19 vaccination and the dominant SARS-CoV-2 variant. There was a significant reduction in maternal mortality due to COVID-19 following the introduction of vaccination. The geographical distribution of COVID-19 cases and maternal deaths exhibited marked heterogeneity in both periods, with distinct spatial clusters predominantly observed in the North, Northeast, and Central West regions. Municipalities with the highest Human Development Index reported the highest incidence rates, while those with the highest levels of social vulnerability exhibited elevated mortality and fatality rates. CONCLUSION: Despite the circulation of highly transmissible variants of concern, maternal mortality due to COVID-19 was significantly reduced following the mass vaccination. There was a heterogeneous distribution of cases and fatalities in both periods (before and during mass vaccination). Smaller municipalities and those grappling with social vulnerability issues experienced the highest rates of maternal mortality and fatalities.

RESUMEN

In this work, we present a theoretical model for domain wall (DW) oscillations in a curved magnetic nanowire with a constant curvature under the action of a uniaxial magnetic field. Our results show that the DW dynamics can be described as that of the mechanical pendulum, and both the NW curvature and the external magnetic field influence its oscillatory frequency. A comparison between our theoretical approach and experimental data in the literature shows an excellent agreement. The results presented here can be used to design devices demanding the proper control of the DW oscillatory motion in NWs.

Three dimensional magnetic textures are a cornerstone in magnetism research. In this work, we analyze the stabilization and dynamic response of a magnetic hopfion hosted in a toroidal nanoring with intrinsic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction simulating FeGe. Our results evidence that unlike their planar counterparts, where perpendicular magnetic anisotropies are necessary to stabilize hopfions, the shape anisotropy originated on the torus symmetry naturally yields the nucleation of these topological textures. We also analyze the magnetization dynamical response by applying a magnetic field pulse to differentiate among several magnetic patterns. Finally, to understand the nature of spin wave modes, we analyze the spatial distributions of the resonant mode amplitudes and phases and describe the differences among bulk and surface modes. Importantly, hopfions lying in toroidal nanorings present a non-circularly symmetric poloidal resonant mode, which is not observed in other systems hosting hopfions.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the spatial clusters of high and low COVID-19 vaccination rates among children and adolescents across Brazilian municipalities and their relationship to social determinants of health. STUDY DESIGN: This is a nationwide population-based ecological study. METHODS: We have obtained for each of the 5570 Brazilian municipalities data on the COVID-19 vaccination rate of children and adolescents by August 16, 2022, the Gini index, the social vulnerability index and the municipal human development index. A Bayesian empirical local model was used to identify fluctuations in the COVID-19 vaccination rates. Spatial clusters were identified using scan spatial statistic tests. The relationship among COVID-19 vaccination rates and social determinants of health was explored by using multiple linear regression models. RESULTS: Overall, 52.1% of children aged 5-11 years and 72.8% of adolescents aged 12-17 years have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in Brazil by mid-August 2022. There was spatial dependence on the smoothed rates for both children (I Moran 0.66; P < 0.001) and adolescent (I Moran 0.65; P < 0.001) groups. The lowest rates occurred in municipalities in the North and Northeast regions. Municipalities with a higher Gini Index, higher social vulnerability index and lower municipal human development index were more likely to have a lower COVID-19 vaccination rate for both children and adolescent groups. CONCLUSION: COVID-19 vaccination of children and adolescents was heterogeneously distributed, with spatial clusters of the lowest vaccination rates occurring mainly in municipalities with marked socio-economic disparities and social vulnerability, especially in the North and Northeast regions.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between vaccination coverage and booster coverage against COVID-19, socio-economic indicators, and healthcare structure in Brazil. STUDY DESIGN: This is a nationwide population-based ecological study. METHODS: We have obtained data on COVID-19 vaccination for each Brazilian state until December 22, 2022. Our outcomes of interest were primary and booster vaccination coverage. The independent variables included: human development index (HDI); Gini index; population density; unemployment rate; percentage of the population covered by primary health care (PHC); percentage of the population covered by community health workers; number of family health teams; and number of public health establishments. Statistics were performed by using a multivariable linear regression model. RESULTS: Lower rates of primary vaccination coverage were found in states with lower HDI (P = 0.048), population covered by PHC (P = 0.006), and number of public health establishments (P = 0.004). Lower rates of booster coverage were also found in states with lower population density (first booster: P = 0.004; second booster: P = 0.022), PHC (first booster: P = 0.033; second booster: P = 0.042), and public health establishments (first booster: P < 0.001; second booster: P = 0.027). CONCLUSION: Our findings showed heterogeneity in access to vaccination against COVID-19 in Brazil, with lower vaccination coverage in localities with the worst socio-economic indicators and limited healthcare resources.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relevance of tumour size in adrenal tumours in the estimation of malignancy risk and in the outcomes of adrenalectomy. METHODS: We evaluate the histological results and surgical outcomes (intraoperative and postsurgical complications) in a retrospective single-centre cohort of patients without history of active extraadrenal malignancy with adrenal tumours consecutively operated in our centre during January 2010 and December 2020. We compared these results in lesions smaller and larger than 40, 50, and 60 mm. RESULTS: Of 131 patients with adrenal tumours who underwent adrenalectomy, 76 (58.0%) had adrenal masses measuring ≥ 40 mm; 47 were > 50 mm and 28 > 60 mm. The final diagnosis was adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) in 7 patients, pheochromocytoma in 35, and benign lesions in the remaining. All patients with ACC had adrenal masses > 50 mm, with Hounsfield units > 40 and low lipidic content in the CT. The risk of ACC and pheochromocytoma increased as tumour size did. The diagnostic accuracy of tumour size was quite good for the prediction of ACC (AUC-ROC 0.883). Nevertheless, when only adrenal tumours with HU < 40 were considered, the risk of ACC was 0% independent of tumour size. For pheochromocytomas, the risk was of 8.6% independent of tumour size for lesions with < 20HU. The risk of intraoperative and postoperative complications was independent of tumour size. CONCLUSION: Risk of malignancy and of pheochromocytoma increased as tumour size increased, but, in the presurgical estimation of malignancy risk and of pheochromocytoma, not only tumour size, also lipidic content and other radiological features, should be considered. The risk of complications was independent of tumour size, but hospital stay was longer in patients with complication or open approach.

Constraint-based, genome-scale metabolic models are an essential tool to guide metabolic engineering. However, they lack the detail and time dimension that kinetic models with enzyme dynamics offer. Model reduction can be used to bridge the gap between the two methods and allow for the integration of kinetic models into the Design-Built-Test-Learn cycle. Here we show that these reduced size models can be representative of the dynamics of the original model and demonstrate the automated generation and parameterisation of such models. Using these minimal models of metabolism could allow for further exploration of dynamic responses in metabolic networks.

Magnetic skyrmions are quasiparticle-like textures that are topologically different from a single domain magnetization state. Their topological protection, combined with the low current density needed to move them, make these objects relevant to be used as information storage structures. In such a context, the analysis of the interactions between skyrmions is interesting and relevant for future applications. In this work, through micromagnetic simulations and numerical calculations, we studied the interaction between two skyrmions living on different parallel ferromagnetic racetracks connected by an exchange-like interaction. The upper and lower racetracks are separated by a height offset and the interaction between the upper and the lower skyrmion is analyzed in terms of the magnetic and geometrical parameters. Three states are predicted, as a function of these parameters: scattered or free skyrmions, bound skymions, and annihilated skyrmions. Our results, presented in a phase diagram, demonstrate that even in the case here called free skyrmions, there is a small and brief interaction when both are close enough, but the skyrmion in the top layer does not drag the skyrmion in the bottom layer. For bound skyrmions, both keep linked during larger times. In the latter case, there are strong changes in the velocity of the skyrmions induced by the effect of a higher effective mass when both are coupled.

OBJECTIVE: To offer a practical guide for the presurgical and anesthetic management of pheochromocytomas and sympathetic paragangliomas (PGLs). METHODS: This protocol was based on a comprehensive review of the literature and on our own multidisciplinary team's experience from managing pheochromocytoma and sympathetic PGLs at a referral center. RESULTS: Patients with pheochromocytomas and sympathetic paragangliomas (PGLs) may develop potentially life-threatening complications, especially during surgical procedures. A complete biochemical, radiological, genetic, and cardiological assessment is recommended in the preoperative stage as it provides an evaluation of the risk of surgical complications and malignancy, allowing individualization of the presurgical treatment. Treatment with α-blockade and proper volume expansion in the preoperative stage significantly reduces the perioperative morbidity. During surgery, the anesthesiologist should look for a deep anesthetic level that inhibits the cardiovascular effects of catecholamines to minimize the risk of intraoperative complications. CONCLUSIONS: An optimal presurgical evaluation of pheochromocytomas/ sympathetic PGL requires a multidisciplinary approach, including a complete hormonal, radiological, cardiac, genetic, and functioning evaluation in most cases. A proper preoperative evaluation in combination with strict blood pressure and heart rate control, and blood volume status optimization, will significantly reduce the risk of intraoperative and perioperative complications. In those patients who unfortunately develop intraoperative complications, the role of the anesthesiologist is essential since the selection of the appropriate management has a direct impact on morbimortality reduction.

Our objective was to evaluate reproductive management programs for submission of Holstein heifers for first insemination with conventional or sexed semen. In experiment 1, nulliparous Holstein heifers (n = 462) were submitted to a 5-d progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID)-Synch protocol [d 0, GnRH + PRID; d 5, PGF2α - PRID; d 6, PGF2α; d 8, GnRH + TAI] and were randomly assigned for PRID removal on d 5 or 6 of the protocol followed by timed artificial insemination (TAI) with conventional semen. Delaying PRID removal decreased early expression of estrus before scheduled TAI (0.9 vs. 12.2%), and pregnancies per AI (P/AI) did not differ between treatments. In experiment 2, nulliparous Holstein heifers (n = 736) from 3 commercial farms were randomized within farm to 1 of 3 treatments for first AI with sexed semen: (1) CIDR5 [d -6, GnRH + controlled internal drug release (CIDR); d -1, PGF2α - CIDR; d 0, PGF2α; d 2, GnRH + TAI]; (2) CIDR6 (d -6, GnRH + CIDR; d -1, PGF2α; d 0, PGF2α - CIDR; d 2, GnRH + TAI); and (3) EDAI (PGF2α on d 0 followed by once-daily estrous detection and AI). Delaying CIDR removal decreased early expression of estrus before scheduled TAI (0.004 vs. 27.8%); however, CIDR5 heifers tended to have more P/AI at 35 (53 vs. 45 vs. 46%) and 64 (52 vs. 45 vs. 45%) days after AI than CIDR6 and EDAI heifers, respectively. Overall, CIDR5 and CIDR6 heifers had fewer days to first AI and pregnancy than EDAI heifers which resulted in less feed costs than EDAI heifers due to fewer days on feed until pregnancy. Despite greater hormonal treatment costs for CIDR5 heifers, costs per pregnancy were $16.66 less for CIDR5 than for EDAI heifers. In conclusion, delaying PRID removal by 24 h within a 5-d PRID-Synch protocol in experiment 1 suppressed early expression of estrus before TAI, and P/AI for heifers inseminated with conventional semen did not differ between treatments. By contrast, although delaying CIDR removal by 24 h within a 5-CIDR-Synch protocol in experiment 2 suppressed early expression of estrus before TAI, delaying CIDR removal by 24 h tended to decrease P/AI for heifers inseminated with sexed semen. Further, submission of heifers to a 5-d CIDR-Synch protocol for first AI tended to increase P/AI and decrease the cost per pregnancy compared with EDAI heifers.

BACKGROUND: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) prompts antiatherogenic adaptations in vascular function and structure. However, there is an extraordinary interindividual variability in response to a standard dose of exercise, wherein a substantial number of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) do not improve CRF. We (1) evaluated the effects of 12-month of moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on CRF and arterial stiffness and (2) tested whether an additional 3-month of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) would add to improvements in CRF responsiveness and arterial stiffness. METHODS: Fifteen adults with mild-to-moderate IDD (male adults = 9, 30.1 ± 7.5 years old) met 3 days per week for 30 min MICT for 12 months, after which the incidence of CRF responsiveness was calculated (≥5.0% change in absolute peak VO2 ). Thereafter, responders and non-responders started HIIT for 3 months with identical daily training load/frequency. Peak VO2 , local and regional indices of arterial stiffness were assessed prior to and after each period. RESULTS: Sixty per cent of the participants were non-responders following MICT, but the incidence dropped to 20% following HIIT (P = 0.03). Absolute peak VO2 values reached significant difference from pre-intervention (+0.38 ± 0.08 L min-1 , P = 0.001) only when HIIT was added. Lower limb pulse wave velocity (PWV) decreased following MICT (-0.8 ± 1.1 m s-1 , P = 0.049), whereas central PWV only decreased following HIIT (-0.8 ± 0.9 m s-1 , P = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS: Cardiorespiratory fitness responsiveness and reductions in PWV to a 12-month MICT period in adults with IDD improved following a period of HIIT programme inducing higher metabolic stress.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to estimate the incidence and mortality rates of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Brazilian children and to analyze its relationship with socio-economic inequalities in a state-level analysis. STUDY DESIGN: This is a nationwide register-based study. METHODS: To estimate the incidence and mortality rates of COVID-19 in Brazilian children aged 0-19 years, we extracted data of confirmed cases and deaths from the de-identified microdata catalog and official bulletins of the 27 Brazilian states' health department websites until September 3, 2020. Social and economic inequalities were evaluated using the Social Vulnerability Index and Gini coefficient, respectively. The relationship between COVID-19 rates in Brazilian children and socio-economic vulnerability at the state level was analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation. RESULTS: Of the 3,998,055 individuals with COVID-19 included in our database, 335,279 (8.4%) were children aged 0-19 years. Eight hundred deaths in children were registered, which accounts for about 0.7% of the deaths related to COVID-19 in the country. There were important differences in the incidence and mortality rates among Brazilian regions, and a correlation between mortality rates and social (ρ = 0.519; P-value = 0.007; effect magnitude: moderate) and economic (ρ = 0.615; P-value < 0.001; effect magnitude: strong) inequalities was found in a state-level analysis. CONCLUSIONS: This population-based study showed important regional differences in COVID-19 estimates for children in Brazil and a relationship between mortality rates and socio-economic inequalities. The knowledge of sociogeographic differences in the estimates of COVID-19 is crucial to planning societal strategies and local decision-making to mitigate the effects of disease in the pediatric population.

BACKGROUND: There is emerging evidence that frail individuals present a decreased physiological reserve, decreased ability to maintain homeostasis, and increased vulnerability to stressors. The concept of frailty has become increasingly recognized as a valuable measure in oncological surgical patients, including those with head and neck cancer. Preoperative screening for frailty may provide an individualized risk assessment that can be used by an interdisciplinary team for preoperative counseling and to improve outcomes. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the relationship between frailty and the risk of major postoperative complications in frail individuals submitted to head and neck oncologic surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Google Scholar and OpenThesis were systematically searched to identify studies that evaluated the risk of major postoperative complications in frail individuals undergoing head and neck oncologic surgery. The search was performed on August 31, 2020, without language or date restrictions. Two independent investigators screened the searched studies based on each paper's title and abstract. Relevant studies were read in full and selected according to the eligibility criteria. Frailty was assessed by modified Frailty Index (mFI-11) and major postoperative complications were measured by the Clavien-Dindo classification. We performed a categorical and dose-response meta-analysis using a random-effects model to evaluate the association between frailty and the risk of major postoperative complications in patients submitted to head and neck oncologic surgery. The results of the meta-analysis were expressed as relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). RESULTS: Four studies (9,947 patients) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Frail patients presented an increased risk of life-threatening complications requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission (RR = 4.67; 95% CI 1.54-14.10) and 30-day mortality (RR = 8.10; 95% CI 2.30-28.57) compared to non-frail patients. We found evidence of dose-response trend between mFI-11 and major postoperative complications. CONCLUSIONS: Higher frailty scores are associated with a significant increase in ICU-level complications and 30-day mortality after head and neck oncologic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Skin tears are acute wounds that are frequently misdiagnosed and under-reported. A standardized and globally adopted skin tear classification system with supporting evidence for diagnostic validity and reliability is required to allow assessment and reporting in a consistent way. OBJECTIVES: To measure the validity and reliability of the International Skin Tear Advisory Panel (ISTAP) Classification System internationally. METHODS: A multicountry study was set up to validate the content of the ISTAP Classification System through expert consultation in a two-round Delphi procedure involving 17 experts from 11 countries. An online survey including 24 skin tear photographs was conducted in a convenience sample of 1601 healthcare professionals from 44 countries to measure diagnostic accuracy, agreement, inter-rater reliability and intrarater reliability of the instrument. RESULTS: A definition for the concept of a 'skin flap' in the area of skin tears was developed and added to the initial ISTAP Classification System consisting of three skin tear types. The overall agreement with the reference standard was 0·79 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0·79-0·80] and sensitivity ranged from 0·74 (95% CI 0·73-0·75) to 0·88 (95% CI 0·87-0·88). The inter-rater reliability was 0·57 (95% CI 0·57-0·57). The Cohen's Kappa measuring intrarater reliability was 0·74 (95% CI 0·73-0·75). CONCLUSIONS: The ISTAP Classification System is supported by evidence for validity and reliability. The ISTAP Classification System should be used for systematic assessment and reporting of skin tears in clinical practice and research globally. What's already known about this topic? Skin tears are common acute wounds that are misdiagnosed and under-reported too often. A skin tear classification system is needed to standardize documentation and description for clinical practice, audit and research. What does this study add? The International Skin Tear Advisory Panel Classification System was psychometrically tested in 1601 healthcare professionals from 44 countries. Diagnostic accuracy was high when differentiating between type 1, 2 and 3 skin tears using a set of validated photographs.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is prepared using purified human plasma. IVIG therapy has immunomodulatory effects on autoimmune diseases, including severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, reports of its effects on large cohorts are scarce. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included SLE patients treated with at least one IVIG cycle for SLE complications. Demographic data, indications, cycle numbers, and clinical improvement with IVIG were evaluated. SLE Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) scores were calculated at admission and after IVIG treatment in order to measure clinical improvement. RESULTS: Sixty-three SLE patients treated with IVIG (median age: 29 years; interquartile range 21-36 years; 84.13% female) were included, who received 2 g/kg IVIG for two to five days. Main indications were immune thrombocytopenia, hypogammaglobulinemia, infection during a SLE flare, bicytopenia, and immune hemolytic anemia. Seven patients received more than one IVIG cycle without severe adverse effects. Significant differences were found in SLEDAI-2K scores when the indications were immune thrombocytopenia and hypogammaglobulinemia, with a trend for hemolytic anemia. Patients with concomitant infection, myopathy, and gastrointestinal involvement showed a considerable reduction in their last SLEDAI-2K scores. Fourteen patients died during hospitalization, mainly due to septic shock and active SLE. CONCLUSIONS: IVIG showed adequate tolerance and effectiveness in selected severe SLE manifestations, mainly hematological involvement. It was useful for concomitant infection.

RESUMEN

Orange peel waste (OPW) (peels, pulp and seeds) is an underutilised residue coming from the orange juice industry. Its classical applications are cattle feeding and composting, while they cannot ensure a total use of OPW, so landfilling is also common practice. On the other side, OPW is very rich in sugars, polysaccharides, essential oils and polyphenols, so there is a vast literature focused on the development and optimization of technologies and processes to several products from OPW. In this review, papers on OPW-based bioprocesses are visited, discovering a wide landscape that goes from the composting and biogas processes on detoxified OPW (deoiled) to bioprocesses to bioethanol, chemicals, flavours and polymers. All these processes are prone to integration within the 2nd-generation biorefinery framework.

BACKGROUND: Despite the global decline in the detection of leprosy cases, its incidence has remained unchanged in certain settings and requires the determination of the factors linked to its persistence. We examined the spatial and space-time distribution of leprosy and the influence of social vulnerability on the occurrence of the disease in an endemic area of Northeast Brazil. METHODS: We performed an ecological study of all leprosy cases reported by Sergipe state, Northeast Brazil from 2001 to 2015, to examine the association of the Social Vulnerability Index and the prevalence and persistence of leprosy among the State's municipalities. Socio-economic and leprosy surveillance information was collected from the Brazilian information systems, and a Bayesian empirical local model was used to identify fluctuations of the indicators. Spatial and space-time clusters were identified using scan spatial statistic tests and to measure the municipalities' relative risk of leprosy. RESULTS: Leprosy clusters and burden of disease had a strong statistical association with the municipalities' Social Vulnerability Index. Municipalities with a high social vulnerability had higher leprosy incidence, multibacillary leprosy and newly diagnosed cases with grade 2 disability than areas with low social vulnerability. CONCLUSION: Social vulnerability is strongly associated with leprosy transmission and maintenance of disease incidence. Leprosy control programmes should be targeted to the populations with high social vulnerability.

Our objective was to evaluate the effect of manipulating progesterone (P4) concentrations before timed artificial insemination (TAI) on reproductive and endocrine outcomes in high-producing Holstein cows. Multiparous lactating Holstein cows (n = 80) were synchronized for first TAI using a Double-Ovsynch protocol and were randomly assigned to receive 25 mg of PGF2α 1 d after the first GnRH treatment of the Breeding-Ovsynch protocol that included a once-used P4 insert (low-P4 group) or to receive 2 new P4 inserts during the Breeding-Ovsynch protocol (high-P4 group). Blood samples were collected thrice weekly from -10 to 32 d relative to TAI for all cows and from 32 to 67 d after TAI for pregnant cows and were analyzed for P4 and pregnancy-specific protein B (PSPB) concentrations. Expression of IFNτ-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15) was assessed in blood leukocytes 18 and 20 d after TAI. As expected, P4 concentrations were greater for high-P4 cows than for low-P4 cows from 3 to 8 d before TAI. Incidence of double ovulation was 3-fold greater for low-P4 cows than for high-P4 cows (33 vs. 10%), which resulted in more twin pregnancies 32 d after TAI for low-P4 cows than for high-P4 cows (29 vs. 0%). Low-P4 cows had larger preovulatory follicles at the last GnRH treatment of the Double-Ovsynch protocol and greater P4 concentrations than high-P4 cows after TAI. Relative expression of ISG15 mRNA 18 and 20 d after TAI was greater for low-P4 cows than for high-P4 cows and for pregnant cows than for nonpregnant cows. Overall, PSPB concentrations tended to be greater for low-P4 cows than for high-P4 cows, and pregnant cows had greater P4 concentrations than nonpregnant cows. In summary, cows with low P4 before TAI had increased preovulatory follicle diameter, PSPB concentrations, relative expression of ISG15 mRNA 18 and 20 d after TAI, double ovulations, and twinning compared with cows with high P4 before TAI. Increasing P4 before TAI may effectively decrease double ovulation and twinning in high-producing multiparous Holstein cows.

AIM: To evaluate the effect of systemic administration of probiotics on the severity of apical periodontitis (AP). METHODOLOGY: Twenty-four male Wistar rats were used. AP was induced in the maxillary left/right first molars. The animals were arranged into groups: Control, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Probiotics were administered orally for gavage (109 colony-forming units diluted in 5 mL of water for 30 days) during the development of AP. After 30 days, cardiac puncture was performed to analyse the complete blood count. Moreover, microbiological analysis of the root canal contents and saliva was performed. Then, the animals were euthanized and the jaw removed for histopathological and IL-10, IL-1ß and IL-6 immunolabeling analyses. After the Shapiro-Wilk test of normality, the Kruskal-Wallis followed by Dunn's test was performed for nonparametric data, and analysis of variance followed by the Tukey test was performed for parametric data (P < 0.05). RESULTS: No significance difference was observed in the blood profiles and in the counts of microorganisms from the saliva samples among the groups (P > 0.05). Total microorganism counts in the root canal, the inflammatory infiltrate and the immunostaining for IL-1ß and IL-6 in AP were significantly lower in the probiotic groups when compared with the control group (P < 0.05). IL-10 was significantly more immunolabled in the probiotic groups than in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Supplementation with probiotics (Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus acidophilus) had a significant effect on the severity of apical periodontitis in rats, demonstrating the anti-inflammatory effect of probiotics on the development of apical periodontitis.

In this study, the effect of several organic nitrogen sources (namely peptone, meat extract-ME, yeast extract-YE, and corn steep liquor-CSL) on D-lactic acid production by Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. delbrueckii has been studied. While lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are well-known for their complex nutritional requirements, organic nitrogen source-related cost can be as high as 38% of total operational costs (OPEX), being its nature and concentration critical factors in the growth and productivity of the selected strain. Corn steep liquor (CSL) has been chosen for its adequacy, on the grounds of the D-lactic acid yield, productivity, and its cost per kilogram of product. Finally, orange peel waste hydrolysate supplemented with 37 g/l CSL has been employed for D-lactic acid production, reaching a final yield of 88% and a productivity of 2.35 g/l h. CSL cost has been estimated at 90.78$/ton of D-lactate.
