RESUMEN

This research was conducted to determine the impact of voting for clean indoor air ordinance on a local-level policy maker's re-election status. Secondary data were used to identify local tobacco ordinances in Arizona proposed between 2001 and 2005, score ordinance content for comprehensiveness, identify policy makers who voted and how they voted, and determine if the measure passed or failed. Participation in and outcomes of subsequent elections were documented from public records. Ninety-two local-level policy makers in 15 local jurisdictions considered clean indoor air laws between 2001 and 2005. Policy makers who voted for these ordinances were more likely to be re-elected than those who voted against them. Structured interviews revealed that policy makers did not believe the issue had an impact on re-election results and believed that although the issue may have been contentious, it was no longer salient in the community.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To establish and disseminate the position of the American Academy of Health Behavior (The Academy) on doctoral research training. METHODS: A collaborative process involving the Work Group on Doctoral Research Training with input from The Academy membership led to the development of the guidelines described herein. RESULTS: A set of guidelines is provided that describe the process of learning to be a scholar/researcher and the outcomes of learning the practice of health behavior research. CONCLUSIONS: The doctoral students who are to become the stewards of our field should be prepared to engage in scholarship that creates new knowledge, uses research to transform practice, and effectively communicates research findings.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent of coverage of tobacco topics, as compared to coverage of health and nonhealth topics, in "general interest" and "health" magazines. METHODS: Lead articles and fillers published from 1996 through 1999 in 9 widely circulated magazines were studied. RESULTS: Less than 1% of all articles and fillers on health topics focused on tobacco topics. A smaller proportion of tobacco articles and fillers, as compared to other health topics, was published in health magazines than in general interest magazines. CONCLUSION: Tobacco is covered less, compared to other health topics, especially in health magazines, than its importance warrants as a threat to health.

RESUMEN

Northern Arizona University (NAU), College of Health and Human Services model Minority Faculty Fellowship Program (MFFP) supports a minority faculty member and strengthens the College without adding to the workload or placing additional strain on an already limited budget. In 2003, the College was awarded a MFFP through the U.S. Department of Health, Health Resources and Services Administration. The College received a second Fellowship in 2008, the only one funded in the country. This three-year Fellowship is aimed at providing minority individuals with the training and skills necessary to flourish in a tenure-track position. There is a shortage of minority faculty in the health professions. Northern Arizona University and the surrounding communities have diverse populations nonetheless, only a very small percentage of faculty at the University are from diverse backgrounds. Success of the NAU, MFFP is largely due to our ability to draw upon existing structures including the University mission and institutional commitment to serving Native Americans, as well as the promotion and tenure process, faculty support programs, and a long-term relationship with the John and Sophie Ottens Foundation. The progress of the current NAU fellowship can also be attributed to the first Fellow's engagement with her contemporary.
