RESUMEN

Sevoflurane, the predominant pediatric anesthetic, has been linked to neurotoxicity in young mice, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study focuses on investigating the impact of neonatal sevoflurane exposure on cell-type-specific alterations in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of young mice. Neonatal mice were subjected to either control treatment (60% oxygen balanced with nitrogen) or sevoflurane anesthesia (3% sevoflurane in 60% oxygen balanced with nitrogen) for 2 hours on postnatal days (PNDs) 6, 8, and 10. Behavioral tests and single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) of the PFC were conducted from PNDs 31 to 37. Mechanistic exploration included clustering analysis, identification of differentially expressed genes (DEGs), enrichment analyses, single-cell trajectory analysis, and genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Sevoflurane anesthesia resulted in sociability and cognition impairments in mice. Novel specific marker genes identified 8 distinct cell types in the PFC. Most DEGs between the control and sevoflurane groups were unique to specific cell types. Re-defining 15 glutamatergic neuron subclusters based on layer identity revealed their altered expression profiles. Notably, sevoflurane disrupted the trajectory from oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) to oligodendrocytes (OLs). Validation of disease-relevant candidate genes across the main cell types demonstrated their association with social dysfunction and working memory impairment. Behavioral results and snRNA-seq collectively elucidated the cellular atlas in the PFC of young male mice, providing a foundation for further mechanistic studies on developmental neurotoxicity induced by anesthesia.

Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1), an inhibitor of ferroptosis, is implicated in intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). The current study explored the role of Fer-1 in IDD via the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/NF-κB signaling pathway. IDD-related gene expression microarray GSE124272 and high-throughput sequencing data set GSE175710 were obtained through the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Differentially expressed genes in IDD were identified, followed by implementation of protein-protein interaction network analysis and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. The main pathways in IDD were obtained through Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes functional analyses, and target genes of Fer-1 were obtained through PubChem and PharmMapper websites. Finally, GPX4, FTH, and TLR4 expression was determined in a IDD rat model. Three key co-expression modules involved in IDD were obtained through Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analysis. Thirteen differentially expressed genes were found to be associated with IDD, and eight key genes (TLR4, BCL2A1, CXCL1, IL1R1, NAMPT, SOCS3, XCL1, and IRAK3) were found to affect IDD. These eight key genes had the diagnostic potential for IDD. The NF-κB signaling pathway was shown to play a predominant role in IDD development. Network pharmacologic analysis indicated a role of Fer-1 in suppressing ferroptosis and ameliorating IDD via the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, which was verified by an in vivo animal experiment. The study showed that Fer-1 down-regulates TLR4 to inactivate NF-κB signaling pathway, suppressing ferroptosis and ultimately alleviating IDD in rats.

Hydrogen isotopic effect, as the key to revealing the origin of Earth's water, arises from the H/D mass difference and quantum dynamics at the transition state of reaction. The ion-molecule charge-exchange reaction between water (H2O/D2O) and argon ion (Ar+) proceeds spontaneously and promptly, where there is no transition-state or intermediate complex. In this energetically resonant process, we find an inverse kinetic isotope effect (KIE) leading to the higher charge transfer rate for D2O, by the velocity map imaging measurements of H2O+/D2O+ products. Using the average dipole orientation capture model, we estimate the orientation angles of C2v axis of H2O/D2O relative to the Ar+ approaching direction and attribute to the difference of stereodynamics. According to the long-distance Landau-Zener charge transfer model, this inverse KIE could be also attributed to the density-of-state difference of molecular bending motion between H2O+ and D2O+ around the resonant charge transfer.

Lightweight and robust aerogels with multifunctionality are highly desirable to meet the technological demands of current society. Herein, we designed lightweight, elastic, and superhydrophobic multifunctional organic-inorganic fibrous hybrid aerogels which were assembled with organic aramid nanofibers and inorganic hierarchical porous carbon fibers. Thanks to the organic-inorganic fiber hybridization strategy, the optimal aerogels possessed remarkable compressibility and elasticity. Benefiting from the microscopic hierarchical porous structure of carbon fibers and the macroscopic macroporous lamellar structure of aerogels, the optimal aerogels exhibited superb lightweight property, conspicuous electromagnetic microwave absorption ability, and outstanding oily wastewater purification capacity. As for electromagnetic microwave absorption, it achieved a strong reflection loss of -41.8 dB, and the effective absorption bandwidth reached 6.86 GHz. Besides, the oil adsorption capacity for trichloromethane reached as high as 93.167 g g-1 with a capacity retention of 95.6% after 5 cycles. Meanwhile, it could act as a gravity-driven separation membrane to continuously separate trichloromethane from a trichloromethane-water mixture with a high flux of 7867.37 L·m-2·h-1, even for surfactant-stabilized water-in-n-heptane emulsions of 3794.94 L·m-2·h-1. Such a strategy might shed some light on the construction of multifunctional aerogels toward broader applications.

The reactive collision between He+ and CO2 plays an important role in substance evolutions of the planetary CO2-rich atmosphere. Using a three-dimensional ion velocity map imaging technique, we investigate the low-energy ion-molecule reactions He+ + CO2 → He + CO2+/He + CO+ + O/He + CO + O+. The velocity images of the products CO+ and O+ of dissociative charge-exchange reactions are distinctly different from those of charge-exchange product CO2+. The remarkable features of stereodynamics are observed in the dissociative charge-exchange reaction and are attributed to the spatial alignment of the initially random target CO2 during the He+ approach. Branching ratios of different channels of dissociative charge exchange are further obtained with the Doppler kinematics model, indicating a high preference for the energy-resonant channel.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is common among older surgical patients and may be affected by dexmedetomidine and depth of anesthesia. We designed this pilot study to assess the feasibility of comparing dexmedetomidine with normal saline during light versus deep anesthesia on POD in older patients undergoing major noncardiac surgery. METHODS: In this pilot randomized factorial study, 80 patients aged 60 years or older undergoing major noncardiac surgery were randomized (1:1:1:1) to receive dexmedetomidine infusion 0.5 µg/kg/h or normal saline placebo during light (bispectral index [BIS] target 55) or deep (BIS target 40) anesthesia. Feasibility end points included consent rate and dropout rate, timely enrollment, blinded study drug administration throughout surgery, no inadvertent unmasking, achieving BIS target throughout >70% of surgery duration, and the process of twice-daily POD screening. In addition, we estimated the POD incidences in the 2 control groups (placebo and deep anesthesia) and treatment effects of dexmedetomidine and light anesthesia. RESULTS: Between November 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022, 78 patients completed the trial (mean [standard deviation, SD] age, 69.6 [4.6] years; 48 male patients [62%]; dexmedetomidine-deep, n = 19; dexmedetomidine-light, n = 20; placebo-deep, n = 19; placebo-light, n = 20). This study had a high consent rate (86%) and a low dropout rate (2.5%). Average recruitment was 5 patients at each center per month. Dexmedetomidine and normal saline were administered in a blinded fashion in all patients. Unmasking did not occur in either group. Approximately 99% of patients received the scheduled study drug infusion throughout the surgery. Approximately 81% of patients achieved the BIS targets throughout >70% of the surgery duration. The scheduled twice-daily POD screening was completed without exception. Overall, 10 of the 78 patients (13%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 7%-22%) developed POD. For the 2 reference groups, POD was observed in 7 of the 39 patients (17.9%; 95% CI, 9%-32.7%) in the placebo group and 7 of the 38 patients (18.4%; 95% CI, 9.2%-33.4%) in the deep anesthesia group. Regarding the treatment effects on POD, the estimated between-group difference was -10% (95% CI, -28% to 7%) for dexmedetomidine versus placebo, and -11% (95% CI, -28% to 6%) for light versus deep anesthesia. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this pilot study demonstrate the feasibility of assessing dexmedetomidine versus placebo during light versus deep anesthesia on POD among older patients undergoing major noncardiac surgery, and justify a multicenter randomized factorial trial.

Anionic carbonate CO3- has been found in interstellar space and the Martian atmosphere, but its production mechanism is in debate so far. To mimic the irradiation-induced reactions on icy micrograins in the Martian atmosphere and the icy shell of interstellar dust, here we report a laboratory investigation on the dissociative electron attachments to the molecular clusters of CO2. We find that anionic species (CO2)n-1O- and (CO2)n- (n = 2, 3, 4) are produced in the concerted reaction and further stabilized by the evaporative cooling after the electron attachment. We further propose a dynamics model to elucidate their competitive productions: the (CO2)n- yields survive substantially in the molecular evaporative cooling at the lower electron attachment energy, while the reactions leading to (CO2)n-1O- are favored at the higher attachment energy. This work provides new insights into physicochemical processes in CO2-rich atmospheres and interstellar space.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative nausea and vomiting occur frequently following thyroid and parathyroid surgery and are associated with worse patient outcomes. We hypothesised that opioid-free propofol anaesthesia would reduce the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting compared with opioid-inclusive propofol anaesthesia in patients undergoing these procedures. METHODS: We conducted a randomised, double-blinded controlled trial in adult patients scheduled to undergo thyroid and parathyroid surgery at two medical centres in mainland China. Patients were allocated randomly (1:1, stratified by sex and trial site) to an opioid-free anaesthesia group (esketamine, lidocaine, dexmedetomidine and propofol) or an opioid-inclusive group (sufentanil and propofol). Propofol infusions were titrated to bispectral index 45-55. Patients received prophylaxis for nausea and vomiting using dexamethasone and ondansetron and multimodal analgesia with paracetamol and flurbiprofen axetil. The primary outcome was the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting in the first 48 h after surgery. RESULTS: We assessed 557 patients for eligibility and 394 completed this trial. The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting in the first postoperative 48 h was lower in the opioid-free anaesthesia group (10/197, 5%) compared with opioid-inclusive group (47/197, 24%) (OR (95%CI) 0.17 (0.08-0.35), p < 0.001), yielding a number needed to treat of 5.3. Additionally, opioid-free propofol anaesthesia was associated with a reduced need for rescue anti-emetics, lower rates of hypotension and desaturation after tracheal extubation, and higher patient satisfaction. Time to tracheal extubation was prolonged slightly in the opioid-free group. The two groups had similar postoperative pain scores and 30-day outcomes. DISCUSSION: Opioid-free propofol anaesthesia reduced postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing thyroid and parathyroid surgery. An opioid-free anaesthetic regimen can optimise anaesthetic care during thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence indicates that intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is associated with diabetes mellitus (DM), while the underlying mechanisms still remain elusive. Herein, the current study sought to explore the potential molecular mechanism of IDD in diabetic rats based on transcriptome sequencing data. METHODS: Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1DM) rats were used to obtain the nucleus pulposus tissues for transcriptome sequencing. Next, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in transcriptome sequencing data and GSE34000 microarray dataset were obtained and intersected to acquire the candidate genes. Moreover, GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were performed to analyze the cellular functions and molecular signaling pathways primarily regulated by candidate DEGs. RESULTS: A total of 35 key genes involved in IDD of T1DM rats were mainly enriched in the extracellular matrix (ECM) and cytokine adhesion binding-related pathways. NLRP3 inflammasome activation promoted the pyroptosis of nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs). Besides, BMP7 could affect the IDD of T1DM rats by regulating the inflammatory responses. Additionally, NPCs were isolated from STZ-induced T1DM rats to illustrate the effects of BMP7 on IDD of T1DM rats using the ectopic expression method. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments validated that BMP7 alleviated IDD of T1DM rats by inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation and pyroptosis of NPCs. CONCLUSION: Collectively, our findings provided novel mechanistic insights for understanding of the role of BMP7 in IDD of T1DM, and further highlighted BMP7 as a potential therapeutic target for preventing IDD in T1DM.

Reaction dynamics in the liquid-vapor interface is one of the crucial physical sciences but is still starving for in-depth exploration. It is challenging to selectively detect the interfacial species or the yields of chemical reaction therein, meanwhile shielding or reducing the interference from the vapor and liquid bulk. Mass spectrometry is a straightforward method but is also frustrated in such a selective detection. Using a liquid microjet in combination with a pulsed electron beam, a linear time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and a quadrupole mass filter, we recently innovated time-delayed mass spectrometry for investigations of the liquid-vapor interface. In this Account, we illustrate how this unique method succeeds in disentangling different sources, i.e., the vapor and liquid-vapor interface, of the ionic yields of the electron impacts with a liquid beam of alcohol in vacuum. These achievements are basically attributed to the application of an onion-peeling strategy in the ion detection. Concretely, the microsecond time scale of molecular volatilization can be resolved well by tuning the delay time between the nanosecond pulses of incident electron bunch and ion attractor. First, the specific orientation of the interfacial molecule, i.e., a well-known fact about the hydrophobic hydrocarbon groups pointing outside the liquid surface of alcohol, is validated again. More importantly, the dynamic features of time-delayed mass spectra, in particular, for the ionic yields from the liquid-vapor interface, are rationalized explicitly. Moreover, we demonstrate evidence of in situ molecular dimers in the liquid-vapor interface of 1-propanol. As the first example of electron-induced reaction in the liquid-vapor interface, dimethyl ether can be synthesized in the liquid methanol interface due to local interfacial acidification by high-energy electron impacts. On the contrary, the low energy electron can lead to local basicity through dissociative electron attachment (DEA). Besides the primary low-energy electrons, the low-energy secondary and inelastically scattered electrons in the higher-energy impacts of the primary electrons can also participate in the DEA process. In contrast to the gas- or solid-phase DEAs, that in the liquid-vapor interface shows distinct differences in both the types and efficiencies of anionic products. With these and efforts in the future, we develop a molecular-level understanding of how the chemical reactions happen in the liquid-vapor interface.

BACKGROUND: Multiple neonatal exposures to sevoflurane induce neurocognitive dysfunctions in rodents. The lack of cell type-specific information after sevoflurane exposure limits the mechanistic understanding of these effects. In this study, the authors tested the hypothesis that sevoflurane exposures alter the atlas of hippocampal cell clusters and have neuronal and nonneuronal cell type-specific effects in mice of both sexes. METHODS: Neonatal mice were exposed to 3% sevoflurane for 2 h at postnatal days 6, 8, and 10 and analyzed for the exposure effects at postnatal day 37. Single-nucleus RNA sequencing was performed in the hippocampus followed by in situ hybridization to validate the results of RNA sequencing. The Morris Water Maze test was performed to test neurocognitive function. RESULTS: The authors found sex-specific distribution of hippocampal cell types in control mice alongside cell type- and sex-specific effects of sevoflurane exposure on distinct hippocampal cell populations. There were important changes in male but not in female mice after sevoflurane exposure regarding the proportions of cornu ammonis 1 neurons (control vs. sevoflurane, males: 79.9% vs. 32.3%; females: 27.3% vs. 24.3%), dentate gyrus (males: 4.2% vs. 23.4%; females: 36.2% vs. 35.8%), and oligodendrocytes (males: 0.6% vs. 6.9%; females: 5.9% vs. 7.8%). In male but not in female mice, sevoflurane altered the number of significantly enriched ligand-receptor pairs in the cornu ammonis 1, cornu ammonis 3, and dente gyrus trisynaptic circuit (control vs. sevoflurane, cornu ammonis 1-cornu ammonis 3: 18 vs. 42 in males and 15 vs. 21 in females; cornu ammonis 1-dentate gyrus: 21 vs. 35 in males and 12 vs. 20 in females; cornu ammonis 3-dentate gyrus: 25 vs. 45 in males and 17 vs. 20 in females), interfered with dentate gyrus granule cell neurogenesis, hampered microglia differentiation, and decreased cornu ammonis 1 pyramidal cell diversity. Oligodendrocyte differentiation was specifically altered in females with increased expressions of Mbp and Mag. In situ hybridization validated the increased expression of common differentially expressed genes. CONCLUSIONS: This single-nucleus RNA sequencing study reveals the hippocampal atlas of mice, providing a comprehensive resource for the neuronal and nonneuronal cell type- and sex-specific effects of sevoflurane during development.

A resonant system consisting of an excess electron and a closed-shell atom or molecule, as a temporary negative ion, is usually in doublet-spin states that are analogous to bright states of photoexcitation of the neutral. However, anionic higher-spin states, noted as dark states, are scarcely accessed. Here, we report the dissociation dynamics of CO- in dark quartet resonant states that are formed by electron attachments to electronically excited CO (a3Π). Among the dissociations to O-(2P) + C(3P), O-(2P) + C(1D), and O-(2P) + C(1S), the latter two are spin-forbidden in the quartet-spin resonant states of CO-, while the first process is preferred in 4Σ- and 4Π states. The present finding sheds new light on anionic dark states.

AGPAT6 plays a crucial role in the triglyceride (TG) synthesis pathway in mammals. However, its roles in buffalo lactation remain unknown. Therefore, we investigated the functional roles of AGPAT6 in milk fat synthesis by transfecting overexpression and lentivirus interference vectors in buffalo mammary epithelial cells (BuMECs) in vitro. AGPAT6 overexpression in BuMECs significantly enhanced the mRNA expression of FABP4, SLC27A6, ACSL1, DGAT1, DGAT2, LPIN1, INSIG1, CEBPA and SREBF1 genes, and significantly reduced that of XDH, CPT1A, LIPE, INSIG2 and PPARGC1A, but has no significant influence to the mRNA abundance of FABP3, GPAM, PPARG and SREBF2. However, the interference with AGPAT6, the mRNA expression of FABP4, SLC27A6, ACSL1, DGAT1, DGAT2, INSIG1, CEBPA, SREBF1, XDH, CPT1A, LIPE, INSIG2 and PPARGC1A genes in BuMECs changed contrary to the overexpression experiment, and that of GPAM, PPARG and SREBF2 also did not change significantly, but the expression of FABP3 was significantly decreased. In addition, the overexpression/interference of AGPAT6 gene significantly increased/decreased TG content in BuMECs. The results here indicate that AGPAT6 gene is involved in TG synthesis in BuMECs, and affects the expression of major genes associated with FA transport and activation, TG synthesis and transcription regulation, FA oxidation and TG degradation during the lipogenesis of milk.

Dissociative electron attachments via the lowest shape resonant state 2Πu of CO2-, e- + CO2 → O- + CO, are investigated with our high-resolution anion velocity map imaging apparatus. The production efficiency curve of O- obtained in this work is consistent with those reported previously. The forward-backward asymmetric distribution superimposed on the isotopic background is observed in the time-sliced velocity image of O- yield, implying that the dissociation of CO2-(2Πu) proceeds through a combinational motion of bond stretching and bending. Thereby, the coproduct CO is proposed to be in the rovibrational states. The long-standing arguments about the dissociation dynamics of CO2-(2Πu) are settled.

BACKGROUND: Results from previous studies evaluating the effects of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) on morbidity and mortality after cardiac surgery are inconsistent. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aims to determine whether RIPC improves cardiac and renal outcomes in adults undergoing cardiac surgery. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were comprehensively searched to identify RCTs comparing RIPC with control in cardiac surgery. The coprimary outcomes were the incidence of postoperative myocardial infarction (MI) and the incidence of postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI). Meta-analyses were performed using a random-effect model. Subgroup analyses were conducted according to volatile only anesthesia versus propofol anesthesia with or without volatiles, high-risk patients versus non-high-risk patients, and Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN) or Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria versus other criteria for AKI diagnosis. RESULTS: A total of 79 RCTs with 10,814 patients were included. While the incidence of postoperative MI did not differ between the RIPC and control groups (8.2% vs 9.7%; risk ratio [RR] = 0.87, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.76-1.01, P = .07, I2 = 0%), RIPC significantly reduced the incidence of postoperative AKI (22% vs 24.4%; RR = 0.86, 95% CI, 0.77-0.97, P = .01, I2 = 34%). The subgroup analyses showed that RIPC was associated with a reduced incidence of MI in non-high-risk patients, and that RIPC was associated with a reduced incidence of AKI in volatile only anesthesia, in non-high-risk patients, and in the studies using AKIN or KDIGO criteria for AKI diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis demonstrates that RIPC reduces the incidence of AKI after cardiac surgery. This renoprotective effect of RIPC is mainly evident during volatile only anesthesia, in non-high-risk patients, and when AKIN or KDIGO criteria used for AKI diagnosis.

PURPOSE: The paper holds the research purpose of confirming the long-term results of trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture dislocations (TSPFD) under the treatment of open reduction and internal fixation. METHODS: Anteroposterial-lateral radiographs of the patient's wrist were taken before and after surgery. We use a dorsal approach for all cases. Postoperative clinical and radiographic assessments were performed routinely. The scapholunate angle (SLA), estradiol angle (RLA), as well as lunotriquetral distance (LTD) assisted in the radiographic assessment. Clinical assessment was performed using the Krimmer score, modified Mayo wrist score (MWS), active flexion extension arc (FEA), radial deviation and ulnar deviation arc (RUDA) and grip strength. A visual analog scale (VAS) assisted in the pain evaluation, the VAS score ranges from 0 to 10. RESULTS: Twenty-two TSPFD patients due to the wrist trauma received operative treatment and we retrospectively analyzed the surgical results, together with evaluating their clinical and radiological follow-up. These patients held a mean age of 30 years old. Herzberg's perilunate fracture-dislocation classification was taken into account to find that 19 males and 3 females suffered dorsal dislocation. The fellow-up time lasted 98.3 months on average. All cases obtained sufficient union after open reduction and internal fixation. The last follow-up found the median of grip strength was 20.00 (interquartile range, 20.00-21.25), which was 84.5% of the normal side. The modified Mayo wrist score evaluation scale considered 12 cases as excellent, and 10 good. The median of VAS and Krimmer scores at the final follow-up were 1.50 (interquartile range, 0.75-2.00) and 100.00 (interquartile range, 100.00-100.00), respectively, higher relative to the pre-operation (P < 0.001). No patients showed nerve damage preoperatively or postoperatively, or pin tract infection in any of the patient. CONCLUSIONS: It is necessary to diagnose such complicated biomechanical damage in early stage and adopt the open reduction and stable fixation for treatment; appropriate treatment can contribute to a functionally adequate and anatomically integrated wrist.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the oncologic and functional results of scapular reconstruction after partial or total scapulectomy for chondrosarcoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients with chondrosarcoma who underwent partial or total scapulectomy between January 2005 and July 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: At a mean follow-up of 62.6 months (range, 13-123 months), four patients developed local recurrence, and three developed distant metastases, one of which developed both recurrence and metastasis. The overall survival rate of patients at 5 years was 84.6%, the disease-free survival rate was 69.3%, and the complication rate was 19% (4/21). The 1993 American Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS93) scores of patients in the partial scapulectomy group, total scapulectomy + humeral suspension group and prosthetic reconstruction group were 26.50 ± 1.38, 19.00 ± 2.58, and 21.38 ± 2.62, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the partial scapulectomy group and the total scapulectomy + humeral suspension or prosthetic reconstruction group ( P = 0.006 and 0.0336, respectively). The range of motion of the shoulder joint for forward flexion was 80.83° ± 11.14°, 51.25° ± 21.36°, and 52.50° ± 11.02°, respectively. The p-values for the comparison between the partial scapulectomy group and the total scapulectomy + humeral suspension or prosthetic reconstruction group were 0.0493 and 0.0174, respectively. And the range of motion of abduction was 75.00° ± 10.49°, 32.50° ± 11.90°, 41.88° ± 11.63°, respectively. Patients in the partial scapulectomy group had significantly better postoperative shoulder abduction function than the total scapulectomy + humeral suspension or prosthetic reconstruction group (P = 0.0035 and 0.0304, respectively). There was no significant difference in MSTS93 scores and flexion and abduction function of the shoulder joint in the upper extremity after total scapulectomy with humeral suspension or prosthetic reconstruction (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Surgical treatment of chondrosarcoma of the scapula can achieve a satisfactory prognosis and shoulder function. Total scapulectomy followed by prosthetic reconstruction or humeral suspension are both feasible treatments.

We report an ion velocity imaging study of the charge exchange reactions between Ar+ ion and trans-/cis-dichloroethylene in the collision energy range of 2.1-9.5 eV, and we find that the energy-resonant charge transfer plays a dominant role in the large impact-parameter reaction. The parent yields C2H2Cl2+ in the high-lying excited states are directly produced in the charge exchange reactions, while they prefer spontaneous fragmentations in photoionization. This significant difference indicates that the present charge exchange reactions are much slower than the photoelectron detachment. The structural relaxations of the target molecule are allowed in multiple dimensions of freedom during the charge transfer, which should be frequently observed for the charge exchange reactions with large molecules.

Molecular electronic or vibrational states can be superimposed temporarily in an extremely short laser pulse, and the superposition-state transients formed therein receive much attention, owing to the extensive interest in molecular fundamentals and the potential applications in quantum information processing. Using the crossed-beam ion velocity map imaging technique, we disentangle two distinctly different pathways leading to the forward-scattered N2 + yields in the large impact-parameter charge transfer from low-energy Ar+ to N2. Besides the ground-state (X2Σg +) N2 + produced in the energy-resonant charge transfer, a few slower N2 + ions are proposed to be in the superpositions of the X2Σg +-A2Πu and A2Πu-B2Σu + states on the basis of the accidental degeneracy or energetic closeness of the vibrational states around the X2Σg +-A2Πu and A2Πu-B2Σu + crossings in the non-Franck-Condon region. This finding potentially shows a brand-new way to prepare the superposition-state molecular ion.

Charge exchange reactions between Ar+(2P) and O2 (X3Σ) are investigated in the collision energy range of 3.40-9.24 eV within the center-of-mass coordinate, by using the ion momentum imaging technique. The internal energy of the product O2+ is enhanced gradually with the increase of collision energy, and the forward-scattered O2+ ions are distributed in the broader range of scattering angle at higher collision energies. At the low collision energy of 3.40 eV, the resonant charge transfer, similar to a photon ionization process, leads to the Franck-Condon-like vibrational state population of O2+ at the a4Πu state. At the higher collision energies, besides a4Πu and the high-lying states that are visible in the photoionization process, the O2+ products could be populated at some electronically bound states in the non-Franck-Condon region. The present observations indicate again the strong collision-energy dependences of the charge exchange reactions, but distinctly different from our previous findings for Ar+ + NO → Ar + NO+.
