RESUMEN

Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), a natural compound, is a promising food additive and preservative because of its safety and effectiveness. In order to determine optimal AITC concentrations for disinfection of food pathogen on lettuce without compromising postharvest quality, various concentrations of AITC (0, 1, 2.5, 5 and 7.5 µL L-1) were applied to Salmonella Typhimurium inoculated lettuce in air-tight box at 7 °C. As a result, the decline in visual quality, weight loss via cell membrane damage, and significantly reduced antioxidant activity were observed in lettuce treated with an AITC concentration of 2.5 µL L-1, 5 µL L-1 or higher. Moreover, metabolome analysis showed pattern of increased respiratory and cell damage, such as lipid peroxidation. Based on physiological changes, 1 µL L-1 was determined as the optimal AITC concentration that significantly reduced S. Typhimurium population (4.01 log CFU g-1) on lettuce.

RESUMEN

Integrative medicine has become a vital component of patient care. It provides patient-centered care that is focused on prevention and overall well-being. As there has been a growing number of patients favoring a blend of conventional, complementary and alternative approaches, integrative medicine has exceeded beyond the evaluation of complementary therapies. However, it is noteworthy that there has been a dilemma of providing substantial evidence supporting the efficacy of some complementary and alternative therapies. This study's goals were to analyze publication trends, most productive journals, most productive funding agencies, most productive authors, most relevant keywords, and countries in the field of integrative medicine research. Additionally, science mapping included country collaboration analysis and thematic evolution analysis. The findings from this study showed a constant rise in annual growth of publications from 2000 to 2019; the United States was dominant in various analysis categories. In conclusion, a comprehensive review of the evolution of research of integrative medicine will help healthcare providers understand an overview of the present status while encouraging more evidence-based research for the betterment of integrative patient care.

Oriental melons have a relatively short shelf life as they are harvested during the summer season and susceptible to cold-induced injuries. Typical chilling injury when stored at 4 °C is expressed as browning of the fruit suture. To prolong the shelf life and reduce browning of the fruit, the effects of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), X-tend modified atmosphere (MA)/modified humidity (MH) bulk packaging (XF), and polyethylene (PE) packaging, on oriental melons were investigated during storage at 4 °C and 10 °C for 14 days and under retail display conditions at 20 °C. The O2 concentrations in PE packages stored at 4 °C and 10 °C ranged from 17.4 to 18.5%, whereas those in XF packages were reduced to 16.3-16.6%. The CO2 content of XF package (4.2-4.6%) was higher than that of PE package (1.4-1.9%) stored at 4 °C or 10 °C. Relative humidity (RH) saturated in the PE packages but not in the XF packages after seven days of storage. Furthermore, PE packages performed better at maintaining melon weight and firmness than XF packages during storage at 10 °C for 14 days and under retail display conditions at 20 °C. PE and XF packages effectively reduced the browning index of the peel and white linear sutures of oriental melons compared with the unpackaged control during cold storage at 4 °C, and this observation was maintained at the retail display condition at 20 °C. The enhanced CO2 levels, reduced O2 levels, and optimal RH values that were provided by the MAP, prevented the browning symptoms, and improved the marketability and shelf life of oriental melons.

BACKGROUND: While endoscopic skull base surgery (ESBS) has emerged as an alternative surgical option, the limited field of view of the endoscope may lead to the surgeon's fatigue and discomfort. METHODS: The developed navigation system includes extended augmented reality (AR), which can provide an extended viewport to a conventional endoscopic view by overlaying 3D anatomical models generated from preoperative medical images onto endoscope images. To enhance the accuracy of the developed system, we adopted state-of-the-art endoscopic calibration and tracking techniques based on an optical tracking system. RESULTS: The mean spatial errors of AR was ~1 mm, which falls in the acceptable range of accuracy for ESBS. For the simulated surgical tasks with the developed system, the number and duration of error events were decreased. CONCLUSIONS: The results show that the human subject can perform the task more precisely and safely with the developed AR-based navigation system than with the conventional endoscopic system.

Drug resistance in chemotherapy is a serious obstacle for the successful treatment of cancer. Drug resistance is caused by various factors, including the overexpression of P­glycoprotein (P­gp, MDR1). The development of new, useful compounds that overcome drug resistance is urgent. Apigenin, a dietary flavonoid, has been reported as an anticancer drug in vivo and in vitro. In the present study, we investigated whether apigenin is able to reverse drug resistance using adriamycin­resistant breast cancer cells (MCF­7/ADR). In our experiments, apigenin significantly decreased cell growth and colony formation in MCF­7/ADR cells and parental MCF­7 cells. This growth inhibition was related to the accumulation of cells in the sub­G0/G1 apoptotic population and an increase in the number of apoptotic cells. Apigenin reduced the mRNA expression of multidrug resistance 1 (MDR1) and multidrug resistance­associated proteins (MRPs) in MCF­7/ADR cells. Apigenin also downregulated the expression of P­gp. Apigenin reversed drug efflux from MCF­7/ADR cells, resulting in rhodamine 123 (Rho123) accumulation. Inhibition of drug resistance by apigenin is related to the suppression of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling pathway. Apigenin decreased STAT3 activation (p­STAT3) and its nuclear translocation and inhibited the secretion of VEGF and MMP­9, which are STAT3 target genes. A STAT3 inhibitor, JAK inhibitor I and an HIF­1α inhibitor decreased cell growth in MCF­7 and MCF­7/ADR cells. Taken together, these results demonstrate that apigenin can overcome drug resistance.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a public health concern in many countries due to its increasing prevalence. Euiiyin-tang is an herbal medicine formula often used as a clinical treatment for obesity. It acts to eliminate humidity and purify the blood, the causes of obesity identified by the theoretical framework of Korean medicine. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Euiiyin-tang in treating obesity. METHODS/DESIGN: This study is a randomised, double-blinded and placebo-controlled, multicentre trial. It has two parallel arms: the Euiiyin-tang group and the placebo group. A total of 160 obese adult women will be enrolled in the trial. The participants will be randomly divided at a 1:1 ratio at visit 2 (baseline). The participants will be administered Euiiyin-tang or placebo for 12 weeks. The primary endpoint is the change in weight occurring between baseline and post-treatment. The secondary outcomes include average weight reduction, changes in body fat, waist and hip circumferences, body mass index, and lipid profile, and the results of questionnaires such as the Korean version of Obesity-related Quality of Life, the Korean version of Eating Attitudes Test, the Social Readjustment Rating Scale, and the Stress Reaction Inventory. DISCUSSION: The present study will provide research methodologies for evaluating the efficacy and safety of Euiiyin-tang in patients with obesity. In addition, it will provide evidence of correlation between obesity and Sasang constitutional medicine. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01724099 . Registered on 2 November 2012.
