RESUMEN

Glioblastoma (GB) is the most common and most aggressive primary brain tumor in adults, with an overall survival almost 14.6 months. Optimal resection followed by combined temozolomide chemotherapy and radiotherapy, also known as Stupp protocol, remains the standard of treatment; nevertheless, resistance to temozolomide, which can be obtained throughout many molecular pathways, is still an unsurpassed obstacle. Several factors influence the efficacy of temozolomide, including the involvement of other DNA repair systems, aberrant signaling pathways, autophagy, epigenetic modifications, microRNAs, and extracellular vesicle production. The blood-brain barrier, which serves as both a physical and biochemical obstacle, the tumor microenvironment's pro-cancerogenic and immunosuppressive nature, and tumor-specific characteristics such as volume and antigen expression, are the subject of ongoing investigation. In this review, preclinical and clinical data about temozolomide resistance acquisition and possible ways to overcome chemoresistance, or to treat gliomas without restoration of chemosensitinity, are evaluated and presented. The objective is to offer a thorough examination of the clinically significant molecular mechanisms and their intricate interrelationships, with the aim of enhancing understanding to combat resistance to TMZ more effectively.

INTRODUCTION: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a type of non-traumatic SAH that can have detrimental effects on the central nervous system, resulting in severe disability or death. METHODS: Early nimodipine is currently the only strongly recommended pharmacological treatment that has shown efficacy in improving neurological/functional outcomes in aSAH patients. Whether statin treatment is of benefit to aSAH patients is an issue that has generated considerable interest and debate. In the present scoping review, we mapped and analyzed the available literature on metaanalyses of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) examining the effect of statins on aSAH. Seventeen meta-analyses of RCTs, published between 2008 and 2023, were identified. RESULTS: Treatments in included meta-analyses were based on various regimens of simvastatin, pravastatin, pitavastatin or atorvastatin for up to 21 days. Eleven of the included reports indicated some beneficial effect of statin treatment, reducing rates of at least one of the following: cerebral vasospasm, delayed cerebral ischemia/delayed ischemic neurologic deficit, mortality or functional/ neurological outcome. In contrast, six meta-analyses, showed no such effects. CONCLUSION: The limitations reported by several meta-analyses, included low patient numbers or disproportionate representation of patients from certain RCTs, differences in drug treatment, patient diagnostic criteria and outcome evaluation between RCTs, as well as poor data quality or lack of RCTs data. Knowledge of the reported limitations may aid the design of future clinical trials and/or their meta-analyses.

Introduction: Radiotherapy of central nervous system (CNS) is treatment against many paediatric cancers, even if it is a well-recognized risk factor for meningioma formation. An increased risk of developing secondary brain tumors like radiation-induced meningiomas (RIM) is related to irradiated patients. Research question: This retrospective study aims to present RIM cases treated in a single tertiary-hospital in Greece and compare the results with international literature and cases of sporadic meningiomas. Materials and methods: A single-centre retrospective study of all patients diagnosed between January 2012 and September 2022 with RIM after having been irradiated in CNS for paediatric cancer was undertaken through hospital's electronic record and clinical notes, identifying baseline demographics and latency period. Results: Thirteen patients were identified with RIM diagnosis after receiving irradiation for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (69.2%), Premature Neuro-Ectodermal Tumour (23.1%), and Astrocytoma (7.7%). Median age at irradiation was 5 years old and 32 years old at RIM's presentation. The latent period from irradiation to meningioma diagnosis was 26.23 â€‹± â€‹5.96 years. After surgical excision, histopathologic results showed grade I meningiomas in 12 out of thirteen cases, while only one atypical meningioma was diagnosed. Conclusion: Patients who underwent CNS-radiotherapy in childhood for any condition have an increased risk of developing secondary brain tumors such as radiation-induced meningiomas. RIMs resemble sporadic meningiomas in symptomatology, location, treatment, and histologic grade. However, long-term follow-up and regular check-ups are recommended in irradiated patients due to short latency period from irradiation to RIM development, which means younger age patients than those with sporadic meningiomas cases.

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) can be caused by a variety of factors and its severity can range from a mild concussion to a complete severing of the spinal cord. Τreatment depends on the type and severity of injury, the patient's age and overall health. Reduction of dislocated or fractured vertebrae via closed manipulation or surgical procedures, fixation and removal of bony fragments and debris that compromise the spinal canal are indicated for decompression of the spinal cord and stabilization of the spine. However, when there is no obvious traumatic obstruction of spinal canal, the question arises as to whether laminectomy is needed to be performed to improve neurological outcome. Methods: A literature review covering all indexed studies published between 2013 and 2023 was performed using keywords to identify the patient group of interest (spinal cord injury, SCI, spinal cord trauma, cervical, thoracic, lumbar, thoracolumbar),central cord syndrome (CCS) and the interventions (laminectomy, laminoplasty, decompression, duroplasty). Results: This review includes6 observational studies investigating the outcome of posterior spinal decompression in patients suffering from spinal cord injury without traumatic spinal cord stenosis. Most patients already had degenerative stenosis. From a total of 202, 151 patients (74.7%) improved neurologically by at least one grade at ASIA scale, after being treated with either laminectomy, laminoplasty, duroplasty or a combination of these techniques. Conclusion: Early decompression in SCI patients remains a reasonable practice option and can be performed safely, but no specific evidence supports the use of laminectomy alone. There is emerging evidence that intended durotomy followed by extended meningoplasty may improve the neurological outcome in patients suffering from SCI when meta-traumatic edema is apparent. However, the lack of high-quality evidence and results support the need for further research.

Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is one of the most common neurosurgical entities, especially in the elderly population. Diagnosis is usually established via a head computed tomography, while an increasing number of studies are investigating biomarkers to predict the natural history of cSDH, including progression and recurrence. Surgical evacuation remains the mainstay of treatment in the overwhelming majority of cases. Nevertheless, many controversies are associated with the nuances of surgical treatment. We performed a systematic review of the literature between 2010 and 2022, aiming to identify and address the issues in cSDH surgical management where consensus is lacking. The results show ambiguous data in regard to indication, the timing and type of surgery, the duration of drainage, concomitant membranectomy and the need for embolization of the middle meningeal artery. Other aspects of surgical treatment-such as the use of drainage and its location and number of burr holes-seem to have been adequately clarified: the drainage of hematoma is strongly recommended and the outcome is considered as independent of drainage location or the number of burr holes.

PURPOSE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been established as a safe and efficient method for the treatment of various movement disorders. As the emerging applications continue to expand and more centers become eligible for the procedure, complication rates and complication avoidance become increasingly important. Our aim was to report the DBS-related complication in our department over the last 7 years, compare our rates with those reported in the literature, and highlight those practices that will aid complications avoidance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Since 2003, 106 patients underwent DBS for various pathologies in our department. There were 38 (36%) females and 68 (64%) males with a mean age of 57 years. Preoperative diagnoses included Parkinson's disease (n = 88), dystonia (n = 12), tremor (n = 3), epilepsy (n = 1), obsessive-compulsive disorder (n = 1), and central pain syndrome (n = 1). Surgical and hardware-related complications, their treatment, and outcome were recorded and compared with those reported in the literature. RESULTS: There were 12 procedure-related complications (11.3% of patients, 5.7% of the procedures). These included death (n = 1), aborted procedure (n = 1), postoperative respiratory distress (n = 3), intracranial hemorrhage (n = 2), epilepsy (n = 1), postoperative confusion or agitation (n = 3), and malignant neuroleptic syndrome (n = 1). Hardware-related complications presented in 4.3% of the procedures and included infection (five patients, 4.7%), electrode breakage (0.94%), lead migration or misplacement (0.94%), and stricture formation (two patients, 1.9%). CONCLUSIONS: Complication rates after DBS surgery remain low, proving that DBS is not only effective but also safe. Certain strategies do exist in order to minimize complications.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative intracranial haemorrhage can be a dramatic event, carrying significant morbidity and mortality. Bleeding at sites remote from the operation area represents a small percentage of haemorrhages whose aetiology remains unclear (Harders et al. Acta Neurochir (Wien) 74(1-2):57-60, 1985). AIM: We present the case of a 60-year-old patient who underwent posterior fossa craniotomy for the removal of a space-occupying lesion and suffered supratentorial haemorrhage soon after the operation. RESULTS: A thorough postoperative investigation revealed low levels of factor XIII (FXIII), the factor mainly responsible for fibrin clot stabilisation. CONCLUSION: We suggest that reduced FXIII activity may be an important but preventable predisposing factor to remote postoperative haemorrhage in neurosurgical patients.

BACKGROUND: Recent analysis on the epidemiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI) within Europe indicates an increase in fall-related injuries and in the incidence of hospitalization among older adults as well as a decrease in contribution of road traffic accidents (RTA). Given the paucity of recent national data, we analyzed TBI-related admissions from the Athens Head Trauma Registry during the largest part of the past decade (2010-2018), a period marked by a profound national socioeconomic crisis. METHODS: Demographic and clinical data of admitted TBI patients were collected and analyzed statistically. RESULTS: The mean age of patients (N=2042, 68% men) was 59 years (median 64 years). Patient age showed an upward trend across the study period. Most cases were mild, while moderate and severe injuries were indicated in, 11% and 20%, respectively. Falls were the predominant cause of injury (46% of cases), followed by RTA (38%). An upward trend in the frequency of fall-related injury was apparent across the study period; RTA-related injury frequency displayed a downward trend during the second part of the study period. Assault-related injury accounted for 6%. Surgery took place in 11% of cases. In-hospital mortality (IHM) was 21%. Fall-related mortality contributed to 56% of total IHM; RTA-related mortality contributed to 30%. The mean length of hospital stay was 13 days (median: 5 days). CONCLUSIONS: The present findings suggest a shift in the epidemiologic profile of TBI patients in Greece with a rise in the proportion of elderly patients, a concomitant increase in fall-related injuries and a reduction in RTA-related injury. They also highlight fall-related injury as the predominant cause of IHM. Our results point towards the urgent need for the intensification of fall prevention strategies, continuing medical education as well as public information campaigns on the risks of geriatric fall-related injury.

This technical note presents the advantages of a modified nasal speculum for the translabial-endonasal transsphenoidal approach to the sphenoid sinus and sella for surgery on lesions of the pituitary. The width of the upper lateral wings of the speculum was reduced by half over approximately three fourths of their length. This increases interior clearance and makes it easier to introduce the instruments used during transsphenoidal operations. We performed 50 transsphenoidal procedures for pituitary adenomas using the remodeled speculum. Three experienced surgeons evaluated the visual field and instrument passage through it, and they found it superior to the conventional design. The modification resulted in marked reduction of the overall operation duration. In conclusion, the more open translabial-transnasal speculum described here definitely facilitates the transsphenoidal approach to the pituitary.

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge on the effects of DBS on cognitive functions is limited and no data exists on the effects of constant-current DBS (CC-GPi-DBS), which appears to prevail over constant-voltage stimulation. Our aim was to prospectively assess the effect of Constant-Current-GPi-DBS, using an 8-contact lead, on cognition, mood and quality of life. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten patients aged 27-49 underwent prospective neuropsychological assessment using dedicated tests. Various cognitive domains (intelligence, executive functions, memory, attention, visuo-spatial perception, verbal intelligence) as well as emotional state and quality of life were examined preoperatively and 1, 6 and 12 months after continuous constant-current DBS. RESULTS: Patients performed preoperatively below average on information processing speed, phonemic verbal fluency and working memory. At 6-months there was an improvement in phonemic verbal fluency (p < .05), which was retained at 12-months postoperatively (p = .05). Results also showed marginal improvement in the Trail Making-A test (p = .051) and the Stroop colour-word test (p < .05). Despite improvement in Quality of Life (Physical and Mental Component improved by 32.42% and 29.46% respectively), patients showed no discernible change in anxiety and depression status. CONCLUSIONS: CC-GPi-DBS for primary dystonia has no discernible negative impact on cognition and mood. If anything, we noted an improvement of certain cognitive functions.

This study is designed based on the retrospective analysis of patients treated in the Neurosurgical Department of two major hospitals and review of the literature. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of surgery and address controversial issues in the treatment of symptomatic lumbar intraspinal synovial cysts. Spinal juxtafacet cysts (synovial and ganglion cysts) are a rare cause of low back and radicular leg pain. Although the relevant reports in the international literature are increasing, the controversy about conservative versus surgical treatment and the need for concomitant fusion still exists. Data from seven patients (age range 58-69 years, mean age 61 years) with low back and radicular leg pain due to a lumbar facet joint cyst were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic data, cyst level, presence of concomitant local pathology, treatment and results of treatment were recorded. A follow-up of at least 6 months (range 6-48 months) was conducted and results were noted. All patients had back pain, while five also experienced unilateral radicular leg pain and one had bilateral leg pain. One patient had neurogenic claudication. MRI identified the cyst and highlighted underlying pathology in all cases. All patients underwent surgical cyst excision. No fusion was performed. Post-operatively, all patients showed a total resolution of symptoms with sustained benefit at final evaluation. Review of the literature revealed a trend towards surgery, as this is correlated to a more favorable outcome compared with conservative treatment. Fusion should be performed on a case-by-case basis only. Surgery is a safe and effective treatment choice in this increasingly appearing ailment. A prospective, randomized trial should clarify issues under debate.

OBJECTIVE: Although the parietal lobe is a common site for glioma formation, current literature is scarce, consists of retrospective studies, and lacks consistency with regard to the incidence, nature, and severity of parietal association deficits (PADs). The aim of this study was to assess the characteristics and incidence of PADs in patients suffering from parietal lobe gliomas through a prospective study and a battery of comprehensive neuropsychological tests. METHODS: Between 2012 and 2016 the authors recruited 38 patients with glioma confined in the parietal lobe. Patients were examined for primary and secondary association deficits with a dedicated battery of neuropsychological tests. The PADs were grouped into 5 categories: visuospatial attention, gnosis, praxis, upper-limb coordination, and language. For descriptive analysis tumors were divided into high- and low-grade gliomas and also according to patient age and tumor size. RESULTS: Parietal association deficits were elicited in 80% of patients, thus being more common than primary deficits (50%). Apraxia was the most common PAD (47.4%), followed by anomic aphasia and subcomponents of Gerstmann's syndrome (34.2% each). Other deficits such as hemineglect, stereoagnosia, extinction, and visuomotor ataxia were also detected, albeit at lower rates. There was a statistically nonsignificant difference between PADs and sex (72.2% males, 85% females) and age (77.8% at ≤ 60 years, 80% at age > 60 years), but a statistically significant difference between the > 4 cm and the ≤ 4 cm diameter group (p = 0.02, 94.7% vs 63.2%, respectively). There was a tendency (p = 0.094) for low-grade gliomas to present with fewer PADs (50%) than high-grade gliomas (85.7%). Tumor laterality showed a strong correlation with hemineglect (p = 0.004, predilection for right hemisphere), anomia (p = 0.001), and Gerstmann's symptoms (p = 0.01); the last 2 deficits showed a left (dominant) hemispheric preponderance. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to prospectively evaluate the incidence and nature of PADs in patients with parietal gliomas. It could be that the current literature may have underestimated the true incidence of deficits. Dedicated neuropsychological examination detects a high frequency of PADs, the most common being apraxia, followed by anomia and subcomponents of Gerstmann's syndrome. Nevertheless, a direct correlation between the clinical deficit and its anatomical substrate is only possible to a limited extent, highlighting the need for intraoperative cortical and subcortical functional mapping.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate bilateral constant-current globus pallidus internus (GPi) deep brain stimulation using an 8-contact lead. METHODS: This prospective, open-label, single-center pilot study of 10 patients assessed the feasibility of delivering bilaterally constant-current GPi deep brain stimulation with a novel 8-channel lead to treat primary dystonia using standard scales as outcome measures. RESULTS: Patients included 4 men and 6 women with a mean age of 35.8 years ± 9.2 (range, 27-49 years). Mean age of onset was 18.5 years ± 9.1 (range, 8-35 years), and mean disease duration was 17.3 years (range, 7-27 years). All had primary dystonia (8 generalized dystonia, 1 segmental dystonia, 1 focal dystonia). The primary variable was determined as 50% reduction in dystonia symptoms from baseline to the 6-month follow-up, as defined by the Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale. Six patients (60.0%) achieved >50% reduction in Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale score and were classified as responders at the 6-month follow-up. Five of these 6 responders (83.3%) sustained that response through the assessment at the end of the first year. Constant-current stimulation was associated with significant improvement in pain and quality of life in all patients. Nearly 84% of the overall improvement occurred by the end of first month after stimulation onset, documenting an early response to treatment. Axial symptoms responded the best. CONCLUSIONS: Constant-current GPi deep brain stimulation proved safe and efficacious for treatment of primary dystonia. Motor scores improved by 54%, mostly within the first month. No phenotype-specific stimulation could be achieved, despite the capability of the new lead to stimulate specific loci within the GPi.

OBJECT: A considerable body of evidence indicates that inflammation and angiogenesis play a significant role in the development and progression of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). While various experimental and clinical studies have implicated placental growth factor (PlGF) in the processes that underpin pathological angiogenesis, no study has thus far investigated its expression in CSDH. The actions of PlGF and its related proangiogenic vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are antagonized by a high-affinity soluble receptor, namely soluble VEGF receptor-1 (sVEGFR-1), and thus the ratio between sVEGFR-1 and angiogenic factors provides an index of angiogenic capacity. METHODS: In the present study, using an automated electrochemiluminescence assay, levels of PlGF and sVEGFR-1 were quantified in serum and hematoma fluid obtained in 16 patients with CSDH. RESULTS: Levels of PlGF and sVEGFR-1 were significantly higher in hematoma fluid than in serum (p < 0.0001). In serum, levels of sVEGFR-1 were higher than those of PlGF (p < 0.0001), whereas in hematoma fluid this difference was not apparent. Furthermore, the ratio of sVEGFR-1 to PlGF was significantly lower in hematoma fluid than in serum (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Given previous evidence indicating a role for PlGF in promoting angiogenesis, inflammatory cell chemotaxis, and stimulation, as well as its ability to amplify VEGF-driven signaling under conditions favoring pathological angiogenesis, enhanced expression of PlGF in hematoma fluid suggests the involvement of this factor in the mechanisms of inflammation and angiogenesis in CSDH. Furthermore, a reduced ratio of sVEGFR-1 to PlGF in hematoma fluid is consistent with the proangiogenic capacity of CSDH. Future studies are warranted to clarify the precise role of PlGF and sVEGFR-1 in CSDH.

Background Olfactory groove meningiomas remain surgically challenging. The common microsurgical approaches suffer from late exposure of the neurovascular structures. Conversely, the pterional approach has the advantage of early dissection of the posterior neurovascular complex. Methods We reviewed the records of patients treated for olfactory groove meningioma in our department between 1991 and 2010. A total of 61 patients underwent removal of olfactory groove meningiomas via the pterional approach. These included 58 primary and 3 recurrent tumors. Mean overall follow-up time was 122 months. Results Early exposure and dissection of the internal carotid artery, middle cerebral artery, anterior cerebral artery, and optic nerve was feasible in all cases. Complete tumor removal was achieved in 60 patients. Morbidity and mortality rates were 26% and 1.6% respectively. Postoperative complications included epileptic seizures (five patients) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak (two patients). During follow-up, we recorded three tumor recurrences. Conclusions The pterional approach appears to be an excellent solution for the treatment of olfactory groove meningiomas. Its foremost advantage is early visualization of the posterior neurovascular complex. Moreover, it allows frontal sinus preservation and timely tumor devascularization and avoids excessive brain retraction. The pterional view is familiar to most neurosurgeons and therefore the transition to this technique is fairly straightforward.

BACKGROUND: The Evangelismos Hospital central nervous system (CNS) Tumor Registry represents the current effort of the Departments of Neurosurgery and Pathology to collect data for primary and metastatic CNS tumor patients. In the present study, 12-year hospital data (1998-2009) were reviewed and analyzed. METHODS: Patients that underwent surgery for CNS tumors for the first time were identified. Histologically confirmed tumor rates by age and gender were compared. Time trends in annual rates for specific tumor types were investigated. In-hospital mortality rates and length of hospital stay were analyzed by age and gender and their putative variations across the study period investigated. RESULTS: A total of 1414 patients (age 15-89 years) were identified. The most frequently encountered histologies were gliomas and meningiomas, accounting for, respectively, 32.8% and 29.1% of the total sample. A greater proportion of meningiomas was found in women; the proportion of glioblastomas and metastatic tumors, as well as of mixed gliomas, were greater in men. Increased rates of glioblastoma and meningioma with advancing age at diagnosis were also apparent. There were no significant variations in time trends for specific tumor types. In-hospital mortality was significantly higher for older patients (≥70 years). An increase in the length of hospital stay was apparent between the first and middle third of the study period. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of tumor rates in relation to age at diagnosis and gender showed significant bias in accordance with salient literature. Available data indicated no significant variations in time trends for specific tumor types across the study period, while an adverse effect of advanced age on in-hospital mortality was shown. The present findings can guide the formulation of future treatment programs and preventive strategies and provide the basis for further intra- and/or interdepartmental research.

INTRODUCTION: In rare instances, demyelinating disorders manifest as tumefactive lesions that simulate brain tumors. We report a patient with a space-occupying lesion in the parietal lobe, which presented a serious diagnostic dilemma, between a rare tumefactive demyelinating disease, such as Balo concentric sclerosis and a glioma. This case report highlights important diagnostic clues in the differential diagnosis of Balo concentric sclerosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old Caucasian woman with acute onset of left-sided weakness and numbness was admitted to hospital with neurologic signs of left-sided hemiparesis and hypoesthesia. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass lesion of abnormal signal intensity with concentric enhancing rings in the right parietal lobe, without perifocal edema. The characteristic concentric pattern detected on the magnetic resonance images was highly suggestive of Balo disease, and corticosteroids were administered. Evoked potentials, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, and magnetic spectroscopy findings were not specific, and glioma was also included in the differential diagnosis. A stereotactic biopsy was not diagnostic.After one month the patient showed moderate clinical improvement, and during 12 months follow-up, no further relapses occurred. In the follow-up magnetic resonance imaging, the concentric pattern had completely disappeared, and only a low-signal, gliotic lesion remained. CONCLUSION: We hope this case presentation will advance our understanding of clinical and radiologic appearance of Balo concentric sclerosis, which is a rare demyelinating disease. Although this is a specific entity, it has a broader clinical impact across medicine, because it must be differentiated from other space-occupying lesions in the central nervous system.

Numerous Hellenic terms have been gradually adopted during the development of modern medical science. Moreover, there are a significant number of words that derive directly from the Hippocratic texts. Hippocrates (ca. 460-ca. 377 BC), revered as the father of medicine, and his followers left behind a valuable heritage of medical knowledge that, practically, laid the foundations of Western medicine. Their theories, collected in Corpus Hippocraticum, transformed medicine by adding, mainly, clinical observation and inductive reasoning as significant parts of medical diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, Hippocratic writings have provided an invaluable heritage of medical terms for all medical fields. The present article examines the Hellenic and Hippocratic terminology referring to the spine and how this vocabulary has influenced and dominated upon modern spinal onomatology.

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study of neck pain and its related aspects in a sample of Greek urban population (15-65 years). OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of neck pain in a Greek urban population (15-65 years) and to study the association of neck pain with several socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The results of several prevalence studies carried out in different populations indicate a high frequency of neck pain in the general population. Socioeconomic and demographic factors are likely to influence neck pain frequency and neck pain-associated burden. METHODS: A 1000-person sample of the general Greek population (15-65 years) living in the Greek capital and other urban centers of the country was selected by multiple-stage sampling, with definition of sample quotas based on demographic characteristics. Data on neck pain and its related aspects, including healthcare utilization, as well as demographic, socioeconomic, and employment data, were collected through personal interviews. RESULTS: Of the 204 individuals who reported neck pain during the last month, 35 (17.2%) consulted a physician, 72 (35.3%) received medication, and 15 (7.4%) stayed in bed for some time, during this period and because of neck pain. The mean duration of pain for individuals who reported neck pain during the last month was 12 days. A total of 8.6% of working individuals who experienced neck pain during the last month reported work absenteeism due to this pain, during this period; the mean duration of absence was 4.6 days. Neck pain frequency was related to several sociodemographic factors. Female sex, increased age, and being married showed a statistically significant association with the presence of neck pain. CONCLUSION: The present results indicate that neck pain is a common symptom in the studied Greek urban population. Nevertheless, relatively few individuals seek medical advice for this symptom. Neck pain frequency is associated with age, sex, and marital status.
