RESUMEN

Land surface phenology (LSP), the characterization of plant phenology with satellite data, is essential for understanding the effects of climate change on ecosystem functions. Considerable LSP variation is observed within local landscapes, and the role of biotic factors in regulating such variation remains underexplored. In this study, we selected four National Ecological Observatory Network terrestrial sites with minor topographic relief to investigate how biotic factors regulate intra-site LSP variability. We utilized plant functional type (PFT) maps, functional traits, and LSP data to assess the explanatory power of biotic factors for the start and end of season (SOS and EOS) variability. Our results indicate that PFTs alone explain only 0.8-23.4% of intra-site SOS and EOS variation, whereas including functional traits significantly improves explanatory power, with cross-validation correlations ranging from 0.50 to 0.85. While functional traits exhibited diverse effects on SOS and EOS across different sites, traits related to competitive ability and productivity were important for explaining both SOS and EOS variation at these sites. These findings reveal that plants exhibit diverse phenological responses to comparable environmental conditions, and functional traits significantly contribute to intra-site LSP variability, highlighting the importance of intrinsic biotic properties in regulating plant phenology.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanism of anlotinib resistance in thyroid carcinoma. METHODS: We constructed an anlotinib-resistant thyroid carcinoma cell line and observed the effect of drug resistance on the functional activity of these cell lines. Transcriptome sequencing and metabolomic sequencing combined with biosynthesis analysis were used to explore and screen possible drug resistance regulatory pathways. RESULTS: Through transcriptomic sequencing analysis of drug-resistant cell lines, it was found that the differentially expressed genes of drug-resistant strains were enriched mainly in the interleukin 17, transforming growth factor-ß, calcium, peroxisome proliferator activated receptor, and other key signaling pathways. A total of 354 differentially expressed metabolic ions were screened using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry to determine the number of metabolic ions in the drug-resistant strains. The results of the Venn diagram correlation analysis showed that glutamate is closely related to multiple pathways and may be an important regulatory factor of anlotinib resistance in thyroid carcinoma. In addition, eight common differentially expressed genes were screened by comparing the gene expression profiling interactive analysis database and sequencing results. Further quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction verification, combined with reports in the literature, showed that LPAR1 may be an important potential target. CONCLUSION: This is the first study in which the drug resistance of thyroid cancer to anlotinib was preliminarily discussed. We confirmed that anlotinib resistance in thyroid cancer promotes the progression of malignant biological behavior. We conclude that glutamate may be a potential factor for anlotinib resistance in thyroid cancer and that LPAR1 is also a potentially important target.

RESUMEN

Understanding how plants adapt to spatially heterogeneous phosphorus (P) supply is important to elucidate the effect of environmental changes on ecosystem productivity. Plant P supply is concurrently controlled by plant internal conservation and external acquisition. However, it is unclear how climate, soil, and microbes influence the contributions and interactions of the internal and external pathways for plant P supply. Here, we measured P and nitrogen (N) resorption efficiency, litter and soil acid phosphatase (AP) catalytic parameters (Vmax(s) and Km ), and soil physicochemical properties at four sites spanning from cold temperate to tropical forests. We found that the relative P limitation to plants was generally higher in tropical forests than temperate forests, but varied greatly among species and within sites. In P-impoverished habitats, plants resorbed more P than N during litterfall to maintain their N : P stoichiometric balance. In addition, once ecosystems shifted from N-limited to P-limited, litter- and soil-specific AP catalytic efficiency (Vmax(s) /Km ) increased rapidly, thereby enhancing organic P mineralization. Our findings suggested that ecosystems develop a coupled aboveground-belowground strategy to maintain P supply and N : P stoichiometric balance under P-limitation. We also highlighted that N cycle moderates P cycles and together shape plant P acquisition in forest ecosystems.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Management of the inferior parathyroid gland using total thyroidectomy (TT) with central lymph node dissection (CLND) is still controversial. Therefore, we evaluated the safety and effectiveness of single inferior parathyroid autotransplantation. METHODS: The clinical data of patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) who underwent TT with bilateral CLND from January 2018 to December 2020 were collected. Quality of life (QoL) was assessed using the Chinese version of the EORTC QLQ-C30 and THYCA-QOL. The patients were divided into an autotransplantation group and a preservation group according to whether a single inferior parathyroid gland was transplanted. The incidence of permanent hypoparathyroidism, the number of resected central lymph nodes (CLNs), the rate of recurrence reoperation, the rate of radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment, and the QoL score were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: A total of 296 patients were included in the study; there were 99 patients in the autotransplantation group and 197 in the preservation group. The incidence of permanent hypoparathyroidism was 3.0% (3/99) and 4.6% (9/197) in the autotransplantation and preservation groups, respectively (P = 0.532). The median number of resected CLNs was 12 (8-17) and 10 (6-14) in the autotransplantation and preservation groups, respectively (P = 0.015). No reoperations were performed for patients with CLN recurrence, and the rates of lateral lymph node (LLN) recurrence reoperation were 2.0% (2/99) and 3.6% (7/197) in the autotransplantation and preservation groups, respectively (P = 0.473). The RAI treatment rates were 12.1% (12/99) and 22.3% (44/197) in the autotransplantation and preservation groups, respectively (P = 0.034). A total of 276 questionnaires were recovered, including 84 in the autotransplantation group and 192 in the preservation group. The QoL of the two groups of patients is similar (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Single inferior parathyroid autotransplantation during thyroidectomy can be used to prevent permanent hypoparathyroidism and can enable more extensive CLND.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin condition; however, little is known about the pathogenesis and serum biomarker of this disease. METHODS: Isobaric tagging for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) proteomic assay was adopted to identify and quantify the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in the serum of AD patients. Bioinformatic analysis, including GO, Reactome, GSEA, PPI, and ssGSEA analysis, were used to identified the enriched pathways, hub proteins and immune cells. The expression level and distribution of hub proteins were confirmed by ELISA and IHC. RESULTS: Sixty-six DEPs were identified with iTRAQ proteomic assay by analyzing serum from AD patients and normal subjects. GO and Reactome analysis shown the alternated pathway were mainly involved in immunity, oxidative stress, and actin cytoskeleton. The GSEA and PPI network analysis among the DEPs were carried out and identified Cofilin-1 and profilin-1 as the core components of this network. Additionally, the disruption of Th1/Th2/Th17 cell balance and the significantly reducing of Treg, MDSC, and γδT cells was also found in AD patients using the ssGSEA analysis. Further ELISA and IHC assay validated the significantly elevated expression of Cofilin-1 in AD patients. CONCLUSION: Our results suggested that Cofilin-1 may serve as a novel biomarker for AD diagnosis.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To summarize the treatment experience of single-center children with PTC and to explore the influence of initial surgery on the recurrence/metastasis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in children. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of PTC case data of children (≤ 18 years old) who were admitted to and received surgical treatment in the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University from January 2012 to December 2020. RESULTS: A total of 64 children with PTC were included, including 45 cases (70.31%) with a single lesion, and 19 cases (29.69%) with multiple lesions (≥ 2 lesions). Fifteen patients relapsed. Univariate analysis found that gender, thyroidectomy scope, central lymph node dissection, and lateral lymph node dissection were risk factors affecting reoperation; multi-factor analysis showed that central lymph node dissection was an independent risk factor affecting reoperation. According to Kaplan-Meier analysis, central lymph node dissection, total thyroidectomy (TT), lobectomy (LT), and disease-free survival (DFS) were statistically significant (p = 0.000, p = 0.000). CONCLUSION: At the time of diagnosis of PTC in children, the rate of lymph node metastasis in the central and lateral cervical regions is high. The vast majority of children with PTC should be treated with TT, and LT is chosen for a small number of patients. CND should be routinely lined.

RESUMEN

Leaf trait relationships are widely used to predict ecosystem function in terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs), in which leaf maximum carboxylation capacity (Vc,max ), an important trait for modelling photosynthesis, can be inferred from other easier-to-measure traits. However, whether trait-Vc,max relationships are robust across different forest types remains unclear. Here we used measurements of leaf traits, including one morphological trait (leaf mass per area), three biochemical traits (leaf water content, area-based leaf nitrogen content, and leaf chlorophyll content), one physiological trait (Vc,max ), as well as leaf reflectance spectra, and explored their relationships within and across three contrasting forest types in China. We found weak and forest type-specific relationships between Vc,max and the four morphological and biochemical traits (R2 ≤ 0.15), indicated by significantly changing slopes and intercepts across forest types. By contrast, reflectance spectroscopy effectively collapsed the differences in the trait-Vc,max relationships across three forest biomes into a single robust model for Vc,max (R2 = 0.77), and also accurately estimated the four traits (R2 = 0.75-0.94). These findings challenge the traditional use of the empirical trait-Vc,max relationships in TBMs for estimating terrestrial plant photosynthesis, but also highlight spectroscopy as an efficient alternative for characterising Vc,max and multitrait variability, with critical insights into ecosystem modelling and functional trait ecology.

RESUMEN

To establish a risk probability model for residual metastatic lymph nodes in patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) after cervical central lymph node dissection (CLND). The clinical data of patients with PTMC treated in the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University from 2007 to 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent thyroidectomy with CLND, and at least one lymph node was examined. Based on the distribution characteristics of metastatic lymph nodes from this retrospective cohort, a probabilistic model for the risk of residual metastatic lymph node was established. ß-Binomial distribution was used to estimate the probability of residual metastatic lymph node as a function of the number of lymph nodes examined. Among 5399 patients included in the probabilistic model, central lymph node metastases were observed in 1664 cases (30.8%). After model correction, the real lymph node metastasis rate increased from 30.8% to 38.9%. The probability of false negative of central lymph node was estimated to be 31.3% for patients with a single node examined, while decreased to 10.0% and 4.9% when 7 and 12 nodes were examined, respectively. In the sensitivity analysis limited to patients with or without Hashimoto thyroiditis, the performance of probability model was also satisfactory. The established risk probability model in this study quantifies the risk of residual metastatic lymph nodes after CLND in patients with PTMC, which can be used as complementary indicators for the risk of recurrence/persistence disease at postoperative evaluation. The study also provides a new method to evaluate the impact of residual metastatic lymph nodes on the prognosis of tumor patients through retrospective data.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND Hypoparathyroidism is a common complication after thyroidectomy. Calcium supplementation can relieve these symptoms, but it is not clear whether it can protect the parathyroid glands. This study aimed to verify whether Ca²âº inhibits the apoptosis of parathyroid cells following ischemic injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS A rabbit model of parathyroid gland ischemic injury was established. The blood calcium concentrations were measured by colorimetry. The parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The parathyroid tissues were observed by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and the TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Western blotting was used to quantify the levels of the following proteins: caspase-3 and p38 MAP Kinase (p38 MAPK). RESULTS This study demonstrates that apoptosis can be a part of the pathological changes associated with parathyroid ischemic injury. Calcium supplementation inhibited the apoptosis of parathyroid cells following ischemic injury. There were no significant differences among the serum calcium levels from the Sham operation (Sham), the Control group (CG), or the Calcium supplementation group (CSG) after 24 h, 72 h, and 168 h of treatment. PTH levels in the CG were significantly higher than in the CSG at 24 h and 72 h after treatments. The apoptosis rate of parathyroid cells from rabbits in the CSG was significantly lower than that of those from rabbits in the CG at 24 h and 72 h after the treatment. Calcium supplementation inhibited p38 MAPK and caspase-3 expression. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that calcium supplementation inhibited the apoptosis of parathyroid cells following ischemic injury.

RESUMEN

Crown base height (CBH) is an essential tree biophysical parameter for many applications in forest management, forest fuel treatment, wildfire modeling, ecosystem modeling and global climate change studies. Accurate and automatic estimation of CBH for individual trees is still a challenging task. Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) provides reliable and promising data for estimating CBH. Various methods have been developed to calculate CBH indirectly using regression-based means from airborne LiDAR data and field measurements. However, little attention has been paid to directly calculate CBH at the individual tree scale in mixed-species forests without field measurements. In this study, we propose a new method for directly estimating individual-tree CBH from airborne LiDAR data. Our method involves two main strategies: 1) removing noise and understory vegetation for each tree; and 2) estimating CBH by generating percentile ranking profile for each tree and using a spline curve to identify its inflection points. These two strategies lend our method the advantages of no requirement of field measurements and being efficient and effective in mixed-species forests. The proposed method was applied to a mixed conifer forest in the Sierra Nevada, California and was validated by field measurements. The results showed that our method can directly estimate CBH at individual tree level with a root-mean-squared error of 1.62 m, a coefficient of determination of 0.88 and a relative bias of 3.36%. Furthermore, we systematically analyzed the accuracies among different height groups and tree species by comparing with field measurements. Our results implied that taller trees had relatively higher uncertainties than shorter trees. Our findings also show that the accuracy for CBH estimation was the highest for black oak trees, with an RMSE of 0.52 m. The conifer species results were also good with uniformly high R2 ranging from 0.82 to 0.93. In general, our method has demonstrated high accuracy for individual tree CBH estimation and strong potential for applications in mixed species over large areas.

RESUMEN

More and more studies indicate the relevance of miRNAs in inducing certain drug resistance. Our study aimed to investigate whether microRNA-130b-3p (miR-130b) mediates the chemoresistance as well as proliferation of lung cancer (LC) cells. MTS assay and apoptosis analysis were conducted to determine cell proliferation and apoptosis, respectively. Binding sites were identified using a luciferase reporter system, whereas mRNA and protein expression of target genes was determined by RT-PCR and immunoblot, respectively. Mouse xenograft model was used to evaluate the role of miR-130b in cisplatin resistance in vivo. The rising level of miR-130b in cisplatin resistance LC cell lines (A549/CR and H446/CR) versus its parental cell lines, indicated its crucial relevance for LC biology. We identified PTEN as miR-130b's major target and inversely correlated with miR-130b expression in LC. Moreover, excessive miR-130b expression promoted drug resistance and proliferation, decreased apoptosis of A549 cells. Suppression of miR-130b enhanced drug cytotoxicity and reduced proliferation of A549/CR cells both internally and externally. Particularly, miR-130b mediated Wnt/ß-catenin signalling pathway activities, chemoresistance and proliferation in LC cell, which was partially blocked following knockdown of PTEN. These findings suggest that miR-130b targets PTEN to mediate chemoresistance, proliferation, and apoptosis via Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. RESUMEN

One of the major obstacles hindering the treatment of lung cancer (LC) is chemoresistance; however, its mechanism remains unclear. The overexpression of the metastasis-associated in colon cancer 1 (MACC1) gene has been demonstrated to reverse chemoresistance. In the current study, the expression of MACC1 in LC cells with cisplatin resistance (Cis-Re) was investigated. Cisplatin-resistant cell sublines (A549/CR and H446/CR) were induced by stepwise escalation of cisplatin exposure. MTS and flow cytometry assays were performed to measure cell proliferation and apoptosis, respectively. Western blot analysis and qRT-PCR assays were performed to determine the changes in signaling pathway-related protein and mRNA levels, respectively. A nude mouse xenograft model was used for in vivo experiments. Our results showed that MACC1 expression was increased in the cisplatin-resistant A549/CR and H446/CR cell lines, and the resistance was reversed with a decrease of MACC1 expression. MACC1 overexpression triggered an increase of Cis-Re, which was contrary to the effect of MACC1 down-regulation. In addition, the effect of MACC1 on Cis-Re was blocked by the inhibition of the PI3K/AKT pathway, and treatment with both cisplatin and a PI3K/AKT inhibitor effectively inhibited tumor growth in xenografts with MACC1 overexpression. In conclusion, our results revealed that MACC1 increased Cis-Re partially via the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, suggesting that MACC1 could serve as a potential target to overcome Cis-Re. Furthermore, combination therapy could alleviate Cis-Re resulted from MACC1 overexpression in patients with LC.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Our aim is to test the validity, reliability, and acceptability of the Chinese version of European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Bone Metastases 22 (EORTC QLQ-BM22) module to assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with bone metastases in China. METHODS: Patients with histological confirmation of malignancy and bone metastases from Tianjin Cancer Institution and Hospital from June 2013 to April 2014 were enrolled in this study. All patients self-administered the EORTC QLQ-BM22 and the EORTC QLQ-C30. The Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) was performed to evaluate scores. The reliability and validity tests of the questionnaires were based on Cronbach's α coefficients, Pearson correlation test, and Wilcoxon rank sum nonparametric test. RESULTS: Internal consistency reliabilities of all the four scales were acceptable. Scales measuring similar HRQOL aspects were found to correlate with one another between EORTC QLQ-BM22 and EORTC QLQ-C30, but differences still existed. Significant differences were demonstrated in the scores of all four subscales of the QLQ-BM22 between the two KPS subgroups (KPS ≤ 80; KPS > 80). Meanwhile, the compliance for item completion of the QLQ-BM22 was satisfactory. CONCLUSIONS: The Chinese version of EORTC QLQ-BM22 is a reliable and valid instrument, which is appropriate for measuring the HRQOL of patients with bone metastases in China.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To compare survival of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who underwent surgical resection and lymph node sampling based on guidelines proposed by the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG), National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), the OSI Pharmaceutical RADIANT trial, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). METHODS: Medical records of patients with NSCLC who underwent surgical resection from 2001 to 2008 at our hospital were reviewed. Staging was according to the 7th edition of the AJCC TNM classification of lung cancer. Patients who received surgical resection following the IASLC, ACOSOG, RADIANT or NCCN resection criteria were identified. RESULTS: A total of 2,711 patients (1803 males, 908 females; mean age, 59.6 ± 9.6 years) were included. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis indicated that increasing age, adenosquamous histology, and TNM stage II or III were associated with decreased overall survival (OS). Univariate analysis and log-rank test showed that surgical resection following the guidelines proposed by the IASLC, NCCN, ACOSOG, or RADIANT trial was associated with higher cumulative OS rates (relative to resection not following the guidelines). Multivariate analysis revealed that there was a significant improvement in OS only when IASLC resection guidelines (complete resection) were followed (hazard ratio=0.84, 95% confidence interval 0.716 to 0.985, P=0.032). CONCLUSIONS: Surgical resection following the criteria proposed by IASLC, NCCN, ACOSOG, or the RADIANT trial was associated with a higher cumulative OS rate. However, significant improvement in OS only occurred when IASLC resection guidelines were followed.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore individualized treatment and management methods for medullary thyroid microcarcinoma (MTMC). METHODS: Clinical data of patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma with a diameter ≤1 cm admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University from June 2013 to June 20× were collected. Combined with different treatment guidelines for medullary thyroid carcinoma, factors affecting lymph node metastasis and postoperative disease status were analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty-nine patients with MTMC were included in the analysis, including 24 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy, 5 who underwent thyroid gland lobectomy, and 13 who experienced postoperative lymph node metastasis. Multifocal tumor and calcitonin (Ctn) were the influencing factors, while multifocal tumor, Ctn, lymph node metastasis, and AJCC stage affected the dynamic risk stratification of postoperative disease. CONCLUSION: Calcitonin detection is an important method for detecting MTMC. A tumor diameter ≤1 cm does not indicate that the tumor is in the early stage. The presence of multifocal tumors and Ctn should be used as important indicators for preoperative evaluation. Dynamic stratified risk assessment is critical in postoperative follow-up.

RESUMEN

Forest canopy structural complexity (CSC) plays a crucial role in shaping forest ecosystem productivity and stability, but the precise nature of their relationships remains controversial. Here, we mapped the global distribution of forest CSC and revealed the factors influencing its distribution using worldwide light detection and ranging data. We find that forest CSC predominantly demonstrates significant positive relationships with forest ecosystem productivity and stability globally, although substantial variations exist among forest ecoregions. The effects of forest CSC on productivity and stability are the balanced results of biodiversity and resource availability, providing valuable insights for comprehending forest ecosystem functions. Managed forests are found to have lower CSC but more potent enhancing effects of forest CSC on ecosystem productivity and stability than intact forests, highlighting the urgent need to integrate forest CSC into the development of forest management plans for effective climate change mitigation.

RESUMEN

Background: Active surveillance has been an option for patients with low-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, whether delayed surgery leads to an increased risk of local tumor metastasis remain unclear. We sought to investigate the impact of observation time on central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) and multifocal disease in patients with low-risk PTC. Methods: Patients who were diagnosed with asymptomatic low-risk PTC, and with a pathological maximum tumor size ≤1.5 cm by were included. The patients were classified into observation group and immediate surgery group, and subgroup analyses were conducted by observation time period. The prevalence of CLNM, lymph node (LN) involved >5, multifocal PTC and bilateral multifocal PTC were considered as outcome variables. The changing trend and risk ratio of prevalence over observation time were evaluated by Mann-Kendall trend test and Logistics regression. Results: Overall, 3,427 and 1,860 patients were classified to the observation group and immediate surgery group, respectively. Trend tests showed that decreasing trends both on the prevalence of CLNM and LN involved >5 over the observation time, but the difference was not statistically significant, and the prevalence of multifocal PTC and bilateral multifocal PTC showed the significant decreasing trends. After adjustment, multivariate analysis showed no statistically significant difference between observed and immediate surgery groups in the four outcome variables. Conclusion: In patients with subclinical asymptomatic low-risk PTC, observation did not result in an increased incidence of local metastatic disease, nor did the increased surgery extent in patients with delayed surgery compared to immediate surgery. These findings can strengthen the confidence in the active surveillance management for both doctors and patients.

RESUMEN

China's extensive planted forests play a crucial role in carbon storage, vital for climate change mitigation. However, the complex spatiotemporal dynamics of China's planted forest area and its carbon storage remain uncaptured. Here we reveal such changes in China's planted forests from 1990 to 2020 using satellite and field data. Results show a doubling of planted forest area, a trend that intensified post-2000. These changes lead to China's planted forest carbon storage increasing from 675.6 ± 12.5 Tg C in 1990 to 1,873.1 ± 16.2 Tg C in 2020, with an average rate of ~ 40 Tg C yr-1. The area expansion of planted forests contributed ~ 53% (637.2 ± 5.4 Tg C) of the total above increased carbon storage in planted forests compared with planted forest growth. This proactive policy-driven expansion of planted forests has catalyzed a swift increase in carbon storage, aligning with China's Carbon Neutrality Target for 2060.

RESUMEN

China's massive wave of urbanization may be threatened by land subsidence. Using a spaceborne synthetic aperture radar interferometry technique, we provided a systematic assessment of land subsidence in all of China's major cities from 2015 to 2022. Of the examined urban lands, 45% are subsiding faster than 3 millimeters per year, and 16% are subsiding faster than 10 millimeters per year, affecting 29 and 7% of the urban population, respectively. The subsidence appears to be associated with a range of factors such as groundwater withdrawal and the weight of buildings. By 2120, 22 to 26% of China's coastal lands will have a relative elevation lower than sea level, hosting 9 to 11% of the coastal population, because of the combined effect of city subsidence and sea-level rise. Our results underscore the necessity of enhancing protective measures to mitigate potential damages from subsidence.
