RESUMEN

Lysosomes serve dual antagonistic functions in cells by mediating anabolic growth signaling and the catabolic turnover of macromolecules. How these janus-faced activities are regulated in response to cellular nutrient status is poorly understood. We show here that lysosome morphology and function are reversibly controlled by a nutrient-regulated signaling lipid switch that triggers the conversion between peripheral motile mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling-active and static mTORC1-inactive degradative lysosomes clustered at the cell center. Starvation-triggered relocalization of phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PI(4)P)-metabolizing enzymes reshapes the lysosomal surface proteome to facilitate lysosomal proteolysis and to repress mTORC1 signaling. Concomitantly, lysosomal phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate (PI(3)P), which marks motile signaling-active lysosomes in the cell periphery, is erased. Interference with this PI(3)P/PI(4)P lipid switch module impairs the adaptive response of cells to altering nutrient supply. Our data unravel a key function for lysosomal phosphoinositide metabolism in rewiring organellar membrane dynamics in response to cellular nutrient status.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants have higher nutrition needs than term infants. The effectiveness of various feeding supplementation was assessed by the improvement of health outcomes in single specific systematic reviews (SRs). The aim of this review was to comprehensively describe the effectiveness of feeding supplementation in promoting health outcomes of preterm infants. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in the PUBMED, EMBASE, Science Direct, Cochrane library, Web of Science, and Wiley online library. SRs selection followed clear inclusion and exclusion criteria. Pairs of reviewers independently applied the criteria to both titles/abstracts and full texts. Screening and data extraction were performed by using the advanced tables. The methodological quality of SRs and the quality of the evidence were carried out according to the Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) tool and the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation guidelines (GRADE) respectively. A qualitative synthesis of evidence is presented. RESULTS: Seventeen SRs were included in the review. Fifteen kinds of feeding supplementation were reported in the SRs. In preterm infants, the effectiveness of feeding supplementation in addition to regular breast-feeding was mainly shown in six aspects: physical health, neurodevelopment, biochemical outcomes, other health outcomes, morbidity and all-cause mortality. And the effectiveness of the interventions on health outcomes in preterm infants was found by most systematic reviews. The methodological quality of all the included SRs was high, and most of the evidences was of low or very low quality. CONCLUSIONS: Our results will allow a better understanding of the feeding supplementation in preterm infants. Although the feeling supplements may improve the health outcomes of in preterm infants, the existing evidence is uncertain. Therefore, the clinical use of these supplements should be considered cautiously and more well-designed RCTs are still needed to further address the unsolved problems of the included SRs.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the distribution of biliary ductules in biliary remnants of patients with biliary atresia and to investigate the relationship between the ductules and the prognosis after Kasai portoenterostomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From October 01, 2015 to September 30, 2017, 46 patients who were diagnosed as type 3 biliary atresia were enrolled in this study. Continuous sections of biliary remnants were stained with cytokerantin 19 antibody. The number, area, and distribution of micro-biliary ductules of each section were recorded. According to the number of ductules in the most proximal section (n ≥ 20 or n < 20), patients were divided into two groups (A or B) and followed up for 1-3 y, including cholangitis, jaundice clearance, and survival with native liver. RESULTS: Four patients had no micro-biliary ductules. In 17 patients with ductules, the numbers at bilateral parts were similar (P > 0.05), while the ductules in the middle part were significantly less than bilateral parts (P < 0.05). Starting from 2 mm from the proximal end of remnants, the number of ductules significantly and gradually decreased (P < 0.05). The total area of ductules in Group A was significantly increased compared to that in Group B (P < 0.05). Patients in Group A had significantly higher jaundice clearance rate and better survival rate with native liver than patients in Group B (both, P < 0.05). Patients had significantly higher incidence of cholangitis in Group A compared to Group B (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The number/area of ductules yielded by technical precision is closely related to effective bile drainage, jaundice clearance, and first onset of cholangitis in patients after Kasai procedure.

Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a potential long-term side effect during cancer treatment. There are currently no effective treatments for CRCI. Reduction or inhibition of histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) has been considered a possible therapeutic strategy for cognitive deficits. HDAC6 inhibition recently has been shown to reverse chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy effectively. In the present study, we examined the effect of HDAC6 inhibitor ACY-1215 (Ricolinostat) on cisplatin-induced brain damage and cognitive deficits in mice. Our results showed that ACY-1215 ameliorated behavioral deficits and dendritic spine loss and increased synaptic density in cisplatin-treated mice. Mechanistically, HDAC6 inhibitor ACY-1215 enhanced α-tubulin acetylation in the hippocampus of cisplatin-treated mice. Furthermore, ACY-1215 recovered cisplatin-induced impaired mitochondrial transport and mitochondrial dysfunction in the hippocampus. Our results suggest that inhibition of HDAC6 improves established cisplatin-induced cognitive deficits by the restoration of mitochondrial and synaptic impairments. These results offer prospective approaches for CRCI, especially because ACY1215 currently serves as an add-on cancer therapy during clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Community-based blood pressure (BP) monitoring plays an important role in national hypertension management in China. However, the utilisation of this service, together with its associations on hypertension treatment and BP control has not been fully investigated. METHODS: The study population was from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2015. Cross-sectional data of 2487 hypertensive persons were included as subjects. Stratified sample households were selected from 450 villages or communities of 150 counties from 28 provinces. Finally, 21,097 individuals were interviewed successfully. The main outcome was hypertension control (having average BP under 140-90 mmHg). The main independent variable was utilisation of community-based BP monitoring service (having BP examination once a season or more). The mediators were hypertension treatment (currently taking any antihypertensive medicine) and lifestyle factors (alcohol intake, physical activity, smoke). We performed chi-square and binary logistic regression to analyse associations of BP monitoring with hypertension treatment and blood pressure control. The mediation model was examined by the Sobel test. RESULTS: Mean age of the population was 64.2 (0.24). The percentage of males was 42.8%. Prevalence of community-based BP monitoring was 32.1%. Patients who used this service had higher odds of hypertension treatment (ß = 1.259, P < 0.01, OR = 3.52, CI = 2.467-5.030), and BP control (ß = 0.220, P < 0.05, OR = 1.246, CI = 1.035-1.499). Medication treatment played a complete mediating role between monitoring and hypertension control in this study (t = 4.51, P < 0.001). Those who underwent BP monitoring tended to be those who did not finish primary school education (χ2 = 30.300, P < 0.001), had poorer household income (χ2 = 18.298, P < 0.05), and lived in rural areas rather than in urban areas (χ2 = 40.369, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Although the use of BP monitoring service had no direct effect on BP control, it had a positive effect on BP control through the full mediation effect of hypertension treatment. Termly BP monitoring by community-based health expertise among hypertensive persons, for instance, once a season, can be recommended to public health policymakers for BP control through instructions on medication treatment and health behaviours.

Pulmonary inflammation and progressive lung destruction are the major causes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), resulting in emphysema and irreversible pulmonary dysfunction. Heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF), is known to play a protective role in the process of various inflammatory diseases. However, its effect on COPD is poorly understood. This study was designed to determine the effect of HB-EGF on lung inflammation and injury in a murine model of pulmonary emphysema. HB-EGF promoted percent survival and body weight, attenuated lung injury, inflammatory cells, and cytokines infiltration, and prevented lung function decline. Additionally, treatment of rHB-EGF suppressed the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB)/p65, decreased TUNEL-positive cells and the expression of caspase 3, and increased the expression of PCNA, HB-EGF, and EGF receptor (EGFR). We conclude that HB-EGF attenuates lung inflammation and injury, probably through the activation of EGFR, followed by suppression of NF-ΚB signalling, promotion of cell proliferation, and inhibition of apoptosis.

BACKGROUND: Cell migration and adhesion are essential in intestinal epithelial wound healing and recovery from injury. Focal adhesion kinase (FAK) plays an important role in cell-extracellular matrix signal transduction. We have previously shown that heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) promotes intestinal epithelial cell (IEC) migration and adhesion in vitro. The present study was designed to determine whether FAK is involved in HB-EGF-induced IEC migration and adhesion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scrape wound healing model of rat IECs was used to examine the effect of HB-EGF on FAK-dependent cell migration in vitro. Immunofluorescence and Western blot analyses were performed to evaluate the effect of HB-EGF on the expression of phosphorylated FAK (p-FAK). Cell adhesion assays were performed to determine the role of FAK in HB-EGF-induced cell adhesion on fibronectin (FN). RESULTS: HB-EGF significantly increased healing after scrape wounding, an effect that was reversed in the presence of an FAK inhibitor 14 (both with P < 0.05). HB-EGF increased p-FAK expression and induced p-FAK redistribution and actin reorganization in migrating rat IECs. Cell adhesion and spreading on FN were significantly increased by HB-EGF (P < 0.05). FAK inhibitor 14 significantly inhibited both intrinsic and HB-EGF-induced cell adhesion and spreading on FN (both with P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: FAK phosphorylation and FAK-mediated signal transduction play essential roles in HB-EGF-mediated IEC migration and adhesion.

Throughout the past 20 years, we have been investigating the potential therapeutic roles of heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF), a member of the epidermal growth factor family, in various models of intestinal injury including necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, and hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation (HS/R). Our studies have demonstrated that HB-EGF acts as an effective mitogen, a restitution-inducing reagent, a cellular trophic factor, an anti-apoptotic protein and a vasodilator, via its effects on various cell types in the intestine. In the current paper, we have reviewed the application and therapeutic effects of HB-EGF in three classic animal models of intestinal injury, with particular emphasis on its protection of the intestines from NEC. Additionally, we have summarized the protective functions of HB-EGF on various target cells in the intestine. Lastly, we have provided a brief discussion focusing on the future development of HB-EGF clinical applications for the treatment of various forms of intestinal injury including NEC.

In recent years, the global prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity has surged. Bisphenol A (BPA), prevalent in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, is associated with this escalating obesity pattern. Both early life stages and pregnancy emerge as pivotal windows of vulnerability. This review systematically evaluates human studies to clarify the nexus between prenatal BPA exposure and offspring obesity. Our extensive literature search covered databases like PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Scopus, encompassing articles from their inception until July 2023. We utilized the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) to evaluate the methodological rigor of the included studies, the Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine Levels of Evidence Working Group (OCEBM) table to determine the level of the evidence, and the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) guidelines to evaluate the certainty of the evidence with statistical significance. We centered on primary studies investigating the link between urinary BPA levels during pregnancy and offspring obesity. Our analysis included thirteen studies, with participant counts ranging from 173 to 1124 mother-child dyads. Among them, eight studies conclusively linked prenatal BPA exposure to increased obesity in offspring. Evaluation metrics for the effect of prenatal BPA on offspring obesity comprised BMI z-score, waist circumference, overweight/obesity classification, aggregate skinfold thickness, body fat percentage, and more. Present findings indicate that prenatal BPA exposure amplifies offspring obesity risk, with potential effect variations by age and gender. Therefore, further research is needed to explore the causal link between prenatal BPA exposure and obesity at different developmental stages and genders, and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Objective.Assessing signal quality is crucial for biomedical signal processing, yet a precise mathematical model for defining signal quality is often lacking, posing challenges for experts in labeling signal qualities. The situation is even worse in the free living environment.Approach.We propose to model a PPG signal by the adaptive non-harmonic model (ANHM) and apply a decomposition algorithm to explore its structure, based on which we advocate a reconsideration of the concept of signal quality.Main results.We demonstrate the necessity of this reconsideration and highlight the relationship between signal quality and signal decomposition with examples recorded from the free living environment. We also demonstrate that relying on mean and instantaneous heart rates derived from PPG signals labeled as high quality by experts without proper reconsideration might be problematic.Significance.A new method, distinct from visually inspecting the raw PPG signal to assess its quality, is needed. Our proposed ANHM model, combined with advanced signal processing tools, shows potential for establishing a systematic signal decomposition based signal quality assessment model.

The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) is a highly promising alternative to the Haber-Bosch (H-B) process, but its commercial development is limited by the high bond energy of N2 molecules and the presence of the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, a metal-free composite electrocatalyst of boron nitride (h-BNNs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was explored through the interfacial hybridization of h-BNNs and CNTs, which showed a highly improved eNRR Faraday efficiency (FE) of 63.9% and an NH3 yield rate of 36.5 µg h-1 mgcat.-1 at -0.691 V (vs RHE). New chemical bonds of C-B and C-N were observed, indicating a strong interaction between CNTs and h-BNNs. According to the Raman spectra and the optimized model of h-BNNs/CNTs, an obvious strain effect between h-BNNs and CNTs was supposed to play a significant role in the highly improved FE, compared with the FE of h-BNNs alone (4.7%). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further showed that h-BNNs/CNTs had lower energy barriers in eNRR, giving them higher N2 to NH3 selectivity, while h-BNNs have lower energy barriers in the HER. This work shows the important role of the strain effect in boosting the selectivity in the eNRR process.

Restitution is a critical form of intestinal epithelial cell (IEC) healing. We have previously shown that heparin-binding epidermal-like growth factor (HB-EGF) is necessary for IEC restitution; however, the mechanisms by which HB-EGF promotes restitution remain poorly understood. This study was designed to investigate whether HB-EGF promotes intestinal restitution by affecting integrin-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions and intercellular adhesions. The effect of HB-EGF administration was examined in a murine necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) model in vivo and an IEC line scrape-wound healing model in vitro. We evaluated the effect of HB-EGF on the expression of integrins, E-cadherin/ß-catenin, and integrin α5ß1-dependent cell-ECM interactions. We found that HB-EGF promoted intestinal restitution and the expression of integrin α5ß1. HB-EGF promoted integrin α5ß1-dependent cell adhesion and spreading. In addition, HB-EGF decreased the expression E-cadherin/ß-catenin, via the activation of v-erb-b2 erythroblastic leukemia viral oncogene homolog (ErbB-1). We conclude that HB-EGF promotes intestinal restitution by affecting integrin-ECM interactions and intercellular adhesions.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical substance responsible for the composition of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Early life and pregnancy are important windows of susceptibility. This review aimed to conduct a systematic assessment of human studies to comprehensively describe the association between prenatal BPA exposure and neonatal health outcomes. Literature was searched in Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science published before November 2022, and were selected according to clear inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS) and Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation guidelines (GRADE) were followed to grade the methodological quality of studies and the certainty of the evidence respectively. As a result, a total of 22259 participants from 45 trials were included. And the potential associations of prenatal exposure to BPA and neonatal health outcomes were mainly shown in four aspects: gestational age/preterm birth, physical health at birth, the incidence of systemic abnormalities or diseases, and other health outcomes. Although the certainty of the evidence was low to very low, the methodological quality of the included studies was high. Prenatal BPA exposure tended to have negative effects on most of the health outcomes in neonates but showed inconsistent results on physical health at birth. This systematic review is the first to comprehensively synthesize the existing evidence on the association between prenatal BPA exposure and neonatal health outcomes. In the future, further studies are still needed to verify these effects and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Early enteral feeding is vital for the physical health of preterm infants. However, there is uncertainty regarding the effects of early enteral feeding on health outcomes in preterm infants. Hence, we aimed to synthesise evidence from systematic reviews (SRs) to evaluate the effects of early enteral feeding on health outcomes in preterm infants. We conducted a literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. SRs selection followed clear inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two reviewers reached a consensus for the inclusion of SRs. The certainty of evidence and the quality of reviews using the GRADE and AMSTAR tools, respectively. We included nine SRs in this review. The effectiveness of early enteral feeding on health outcomes in preterm infants is mainly divided into six primary outcomes: increase the weight gain, reduce the incidence of feed intolerance, shorten the duration of full enteral feeding, reduce the length of hospital stay, reduce the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis, and decrease the mortality risk. The overall quality of the included SRs was high, whereas most of the evidence was of low or very low certainty. Our results show the impact of early enteral feeding on health outcomes in preterm infants. Although the currently available data indicate that early enteral feeding may improve the health outcomes of preterm infants, additional clinical observation and investigation are required to evaluate the long-term health outcomes of preterm infants who receive early enteral feeding.

Human milk (HM) has been associated with a lower risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). However, the association of precise HM proportion with the outcome of NEC remains unclear. A total of 77 cases and 154 matched controls were included in this study. The samples were divided into three groups based on the HM proportion of the total enteral intake before NEC onset: ≥70% (HHM), <70% (LHM), and 0% (NHM). The study cohort did not show a significant association between different HM proportions and NEC risk. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for the highest versus the lowest intake was 0.599. In the prognosis of NEC, different HM proportions significantly affected weight gain, the timing of NEC onset, diagnosis time, hospitalization cost, and the severity of NEC (p < 0.05). Our findings support the beneficial effects of HM on reducing NEC in preterm infants, particularly when a greater proportion of HM of the total enteral intake is included in their feeding. Additionally, the study indicates that preterm infants fed with lower proportions of HM of the total enteral feeding are more prone to experiencing severe cases of NEC.

Background: Human milk (HM) is a proven optimal food for preterm infants. However, there is uncertainty regarding the effects of different proportions of HM of the total enteral intake on health outcomes in preterm infants. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review of studies examining the effects of different proportions of HM of the total enteral intake on health outcomes in preterm infants. Methods: We conducted a literature search in the Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases. The methodological quality of the included articles and the certainty of evidence were assessed according to the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) tool, respectively. Results: Twelve studies were included in the review. Among the clinical findings, the effect of different proportions of HM of the total enteral feeding on health outcomes in preterm infants was divided into six primary outcomes: physical growth, length of stay, morbidity of any disease, all-cause mortality, feeding-related outcomes, and other health outcomes. The studies presented a high risk of bias for most of the domains. The certainty of the evidence was considered low or very low. Conclusions: The findings reiterated that greater proportions of HM positively affect the health outcomes of preterm infants. Overall, when the HM accounts for at least 20% of the total enteral intake, it has an effect on health outcomes in preterm infants. If the proportion of HM reaches 50%, the incidence and severity of necrotizing enterocolitis, as well as the time to reach enteral feeds, will be reduced. Increasing the proportion of HM in enteral feeding should be considered a priority in the feeding strategy for preterm infants in clinical practice.

Objective: Biliary innervation is considered important in regulating the function of bile ducts, whereas the role of innervation in the hepatobiliary system of patients with biliary atresia (BA) remains unknown. This current study aims to investigate the role of innervation in biliary remnants and analyze the relationship between the innervation and prognosis of BA after surgery. Methods: Eighty-seven patients with type III BA who underwent the Kasai procedure were consecutively enrolled from January 2017 to September 2020. Innervation and ductules in remnants were examined by pathologists. Liver function, onset of cholangitis, jaundice clearance, and survival with the native liver were recorded. Patients were followed up for 24 months. The relationship between innervation and prognosis was analyzed. Results: In total, 67 patients had bile drainage postoperatively, and 21 biliary remnants contained neuronal plexuses where there was no neuron but nerve fiber bundles. Acetylcholinesterase staining was positive in all plexuses. In patients with bile drainage, those with plexuses had improved postoperative liver function, significantly better jaundice clearance 3 or 6 months postoperatively (50.0% vs. 19.1%, or 90.0% vs. 63.8%, respectively), fewer episodes of early cholangitis (10.0% vs. 34.0%), and better survival (80.0% vs. 61.7%) compared to those without. In addition, a larger area of plexuses was associated with a larger area of ductules (R2 = 0.786, p = 0.000), less frequent (p = 0.000) and later cholangitis onset (p = 0.012), and better jaundice clearance (p = 0.063). Conclusions: Increased cholinergic innervation in biliary remnants may help reduce the onset of cholangitis and lead to better and earlier jaundice clearance. Thus, it improves the postoperative prognosis of patients with BA.

The aim of this study was to explore the breastfeeding knowledge of nursing undergraduates and the influencing factors. Human milk (HM) is one of the most effective nutritional supplies to improve early development and physical health, but the current status of breastfeeding in China is still not optimal. The breastfeeding knowledge of perinatal women influences their feeding beliefs and behavior. Nursing undergraduates, as core professionals who will care for perinatal women and provide feeding guidance in the future, can significantly affect feeding behavior of mothers and their babies, so their knowledge of breastfeeding may have a potential impact on breastfeeding in China. However, studies on breastfeeding knowledge among nursing undergraduates in China are limited. A convenience sampling method was conducted in four medical universities in China, and eligible nursing undergraduates were selected. An online survey was collected from 5 July 2022 to 5 August 2022. Categorical data were reported as number and percentage, while continuous data were reported as mean ± SD. Multivariate linear regression was used to evaluate the association between influencing factors and breastfeeding knowledge. The overall mean score of the 460 returned questionnaires was 43.991 out of 100. The pass rate of the questionnaire was only 23.04%. Nursing undergraduates had a relatively better grasp of the benefits of breastfeeding and related advice (correct rates: 67.83%). Birthplace, only child or not, the course in obstetrics and gynecological nursing, the course in pediatrics nursing, and placements in maternity or neonatology units were relevant factors for breastfeeding knowledge (p < 0.05). Nursing undergraduates showed unsatisfactory breastfeeding knowledge. It is urgent to raise the knowledge level of breastfeeding among nursing undergraduates. Medical colleges should optimally structure a curriculum of breastfeeding knowledge. Furthermore, it is also necessary to improve the public's understanding of breastfeeding and the whole society's attention to breastfeeding in China.

There are vast reserves of foliage in nature, which is an inexhaustible precious resource. In this study, the chemical components of five foliage types (pine needles, black locust tree leaves, bamboo leaves, elm leaves and poplar leaves) were analyzed, including cellulose content, hemicellulose content, and lignin content. The bio-enzymatic method was then used to prepare cellulose nanoparticles (CNPs) from these five kinds of leaves, and the prepared CNPs were analyzed using TEM, FTIR, FESEM, and XRD. The results showed that the content of hemicellulose in bamboo leaves was the highest, and the lignin content in the other four leaves was the highest. The cellulose content in the five kinds of foliage was arranged from large to small as pine needles (20.5%), bamboo leaves (19.5%), black locust leaves (18.0%), elm leaves (17.6%), and poplar leaves (15.5%). TEM images showed that the CNPs prepared by the five kinds of foliage reached the nanometer level in width and the micrometer level in length; therefore, the CNPs prepared in this study belonged to cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The results of FTIR and XRD showed that CNFs prepared by the enzyme treatment exhibited a typical crystalline structure of cellulose II. The degree of crystallinity (DOC) of CNFs prepared from pine needle, poplar leaves, and bamboo leaves are 78.46%, 77.39%, and 81.51%, respectively. FESEM results showed that the CNFs prepared from pine needles, poplar leaves and bamboo leaves by enzymatic method presents a three-dimensional (3D) network structure, and their widths are 31 nm, 36 nm, and 37 nm, respectively. This study provides a meaningful reference for broadening the use of foliage types and improving their added value.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and late-onset sepsis (LOS) are two major contributors to death among preterm infants. Oropharyngeal administration of colostrum (OAC) has been proved as an easy, safe, and economically viable technique to help preterm neonates to build up their immunity. In this review, we assessed the effects of OAC on preterm infants. Several mainstream databases were searched including PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and a website of clinical trials. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing OAC vs. placebo or no intervention in preterm infants (gestation age <34 weeks or birth weight <1500 g) were eligible. Overall, nine RCTs (n = 689) were included in the review. Meta-analysis showed no statistical significance in terms of the incidence of NEC (RR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.33-1.06, p = 0.08), LOS (RR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.60-1.03, p = 0.08) and mortality rate (RR = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.38-1.05, p = 0.07). No significant difference was found in the subgroup analysis, apart from the group of the undeveloped region in NEC and mortality. In addition, time was significantly reduced in terms of achieving full enteral feeding (MD = -3.60, 95% CI = -6.55-0.64, p = 0.02) and hospital stay (MD = -10.38, 95% CI = -18.47-2.29, p = 0.01). The results show that OAC does not reduce the incidences of NEC, LOS, and death in preterm infants, but there is a trend toward a positive effect. It is therefore recommended as routine care for preterm infants in the NICU.
