RESUMEN

Introduction: By a series of calls within the Horizon 2020 framework programme, the EU funded projects intended to deploy Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) at a territorial level, in regional research and innovation ecosystems. This paper presents efforts to document and evaluate the achievements in TRANSFORM, one of these projects. Methods: Evaluative inquiry and theoretical reasoning. Results: Noting the need for a general principle to be interpreted, adapted and translated in order to be rendered meaningful at a local level, we studied precisely these multiple territorial translations of RRI, the organizational and institutional orderings with which they co-emerge and the challenges that come with these translations. An important shared feature is that RRI work does not start from zero, but rather builds on pre-existing relationships and repertoires of collaboration. The RRI project is hence a way to continue ongoing work and follow pre-set purposes, aims and objectives, as a form of "maintenance work". In this very human sense, RRI is deployed with a logic of care in the regional context, while the Horizon 2020 calls and proposals above all are formulated in a logic of choice, to be assessed by indicators. Discussion: We warn against undue standardization of RRI by toolification and use of quantitative indicators, and recommend that RRI performance is monitored by methods of evaluative inquiry.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The media influences public opinion. Although it can provide objective information, it can also create prejudices. For the first time German local newspapers were examined with respect to HOW and HOW OFTEN they use psychiatric terminology. METHOD: All newspapers of the East German Altmark were analyzed with respect to their usage of selected psychiatric terms for a period of one year. None of these newspapers could be described as tabloids or as predominantly sensation-seeking. For comparative purposes, our chosen methodology was similar to that of an earlier study of respected, German, internationally-read print media. RESULTS: In 14 % of the newspapers studied, at least one term of the predefined psychiatric vocabulary appeared. A negative context was common (45 %), but for the most part this was in crime-related articles supplied by press agencies. In contrast with reputable, German language newspapers with a nationwide or international audience, in purely local reports, a negative context was rare, and no alienating usage of preselected psychiatric terms was found. CONCLUSIONS: Local editorial teams seem to be closer to - and perhaps better informed about - regional psychiatric institutions. Hence, they can provide the public with more factual information. For this reason, anti-stigma mental health campaigns will likely be more effective when carried out using local media, as opposed to nationwide or even international media.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of positron emission tomography (PET) using fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) for initial staging and therapy planning in pediatric sarcoma patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this prospective multicenter study, 46 pediatric patients (females, n = 22; males, n = 24; age range, 1 to 18 years) with histologically proven sarcoma (Ewing sarcoma family tumors, n = 23; osteosarcoma, n = 11; rhabdomyosarcoma, n = 12) were examined with conventional imaging modalities (CIMs), including ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging, and bone scintigraphy according to the standardized algorithms of the international therapy optimization trials, and whole-body FDG-PET. A lesion- and patient-based analysis of PET alone and CIMs alone and a side-by-side (SBS) analysis of FDG-PET and CIMs were performed. The standard of reference consisted of all imaging material, follow-up data (mean follow-up time, 24 +/- 12 months), and histopathology and was determined by an interdisciplinary tumor board. RESULTS: FDG-PET and CIMs were equally effective in the detection of primary tumors (accuracy, 100%). PET was superior to CIMs concerning the correct detection of lymph node involvement (sensitivity, 95% v 25%, respectively) and bone manifestations (sensitivity, 90% v 57%, respectively), whereas CT was more reliable than FDG-PET in depicting lung metastases (sensitivity, 100% v 25%, respectively). The patient-based analysis revealed the best results for SBS, with 91% correct therapy decisions. This was significantly superior to CIMs (59%; P < .001). CONCLUSION: In staging pediatric sarcoma, subsidiary FDG-PET scanning depicts important additional information and has a relevant impact on therapy planning when analyzed side-by-side with CIMs.
