RESUMEN

Clostridium perfringens is one of the most important zoonotic pathogens as it can cause food poisoning in humans and necrotic enteritis in both animals and humans. Meat, especially pork and chicken meat, is considered the main vehicle for the transmission of C. perfringens from animals to humans. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, toxinotype, and antimicrobial resistance profile of C. perfringens isolated from pork and chicken meat sold in Vietnam. The isolation results showed that 15/50 (30%) of pork samples and 8/50 (16%) of chicken meat samples were contaminated with C. perfringens. The isolates exhibited their highest resistance rate to tetracycline (21/23; 91.30%) and clindamycin (10/23; 43.48%). On the contrary, their lowest resistance rates were observed in response to imipenem (2/23; 8.70%) and cefoxitin (1/23; 4.35%). In particular, 34.78% (8/23) of C. perfringens isolates were identified to be multidrug-resistant strains. The results of toxin genotyping indicated that all isolates were positive for the cpa gene and belonged to type A.

RESUMEN

African swine fever (ASF) is a lethal and highly contagious transboundary animal disease with the potential for rapid international spread. Currently, there is no ASF vaccine commercially available. All infected animals must be isolated and culled immediately upon the confirmation of the presence of the virus. Studies leading to the rational development of protective ASF vaccines are urgently needed. Here, we generated a safe and efficacious live-attenuated vaccine (LAV) VNUA-ASFV-LAVL2 by serially passaging a field isolate (VNUA-ASFV-05L1, genotype II) in porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs, 65 passages) and an immortalized porcine alveolar macrophage cell line (3D4/21, 55 passages). VNUA-ASFV-LAVL2 can efficiently replicate in both PAMs and 3D4/21 cells. It provides 100% protection, even with the low dose of 102 HAD50, to the vaccinated pigs against the challenge of contemporary pandemic ASFV field isolate. Pigs vaccinated with this LAV in a dose range of 102 to 105 HAD50 remained clinically healthy during both the 28-day observation period of immunization and the 28-day observation period of challenge. VNUA-ASFV-LAVL2 was eliminated from blood by 28 days post-inoculation (DPI), and from feces or oral fluids by 17 DPI. Although the vaccine strain in serum remained a safe and attenuated phenotype after five passages in swine, a reversion-to-virulence study using blood or tissue homogenates at peak viremia will be conducted in the future. ASFV-specific IgG antibodies and significant cellular immunity were detected in vaccinated pigs before the ASFV challenge. These results indicate that the VNUA-ASFV-LAVL2 strain is a safe and efficacious LAV against the genotype II ASFV strain responsible for current ASF outbreaks in Asia.

RESUMEN

Groundwater is regularly used for many purposes, such as drinking and agricultural irrigation systems. Still, it contains high levels of radionuclides (e.g., 238U, 232Th, and 226Ra) that are potentially hazardous to humans and the environment. In this study, activity concentrations of uranium isotopes were analyzed in 15 groundwater samples taken from 15 bored wells in Thu Duc district, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Environmental effects of the irrigation system with groundwater on agricultural soil in the study area were assessed by models. It was found that the activity concentrations of 238U and 234U in groundwater samples were in the ranges of (13.5-268.7) mBq l-1 and (20.2-438.3) mBq l-1, respectively. The ratio 234U/238U values were ranged from 1.12 to 2, with an average value of 1.44. Based on the model prediction, 25 years irrigation with the groundwater can inject 94.8 Bq both uranium isotopes in 1 kg topsoil. For investigated groundwater samples, the proposed removal method using K2FeO4 removed 74.28% and 81.04% for 234U and 238U, respectively.

RESUMEN

Prostate cancer is a global fatal type of cancer. It is a type of cancer that affect men. Signs and symptoms of the disease include blood in the urine, pain when one micturates, and difficulties in penis erection. Cisplatin chemotherapy is a principal treatment normally given to the prostate cancer patients. Nonetheless, on its own, cisplatin loses efficacy once administered due to liver pass effects and other biochemical attacks. In this paper, we looked at preparation of PCL nanoparticles loaded with cisplatin and their potential for the treatment of prostate cancer. PCL nanoparticles protect cisplatin from biochemical attack, thus increasing drug efficacy. Incorporation of P-glycoprotein inhibitors in PCL nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with cisplatin could improve prostate cancer treatment even more.

RESUMEN

Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) and asthma are fatal. The respiratory tract may be blocked, robbed of the adequate amounts of oxygen; hence, death ensues if a quick medical attention is not provided. The treatment available for the duo are inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). The ICS can work synergically with LABAS (long-acting ß 2-antagonists) and so many other medicines like bronchodilators. The drugs used for the treatment of asthma and COPD are metabolised once in the body system and at the same time exerting the therapeutic effect provided the concentration of the drug is within the therapeutic window. The CYP3A isoforms metabolise the ICS, in this case, salmeterol and fluticasone propionate (FP). Methods of administration are not limited to inhalation. Specific doses are prescribed accurately paying attention to factors like age, gender, race, and genetic makeup since these affect drug metabolisms. Generally, the ICS work by translocating glucocorticoid receptors to the nucleus from the cytosol. The mechanism is potentiated by the ß-antagonists and this brings about an anti-inflammatory effect which is greater than either of the two drugs alone. Once this happens, it is not necessary to increase ICS dose. The ICS, in addition, cause more production of ß-receptors by activating the ß-receptor genes. This mode of action begets the LABAs' bronchodilator-effects. The challenge is that ICS are not limited only to "double" therapy. Analysing such therapies is daunting since coadministration interferes with pharmacology and pharmacokinetics of drugs. This work focuses on salmeterol/fluticasone propionate combination and aspects which has to do with administration, monitoring, metabolism, toxicity, and adverse effects.

RESUMEN

One of the most burning issues in health system is the concern of handling patients that requires emergency surgery. Emergency general surgery is done on both traumatic and nontraumatic acute disorders. Severe traumatic injury and bleeding is one of the causing agents for high mortality rate globally. Another group of patients that are in need of emergency surgery are those with heart failure, and in this particular paper, we analyzed emergency medicine with advanced surgery protocols focusing on gastric cancer, cardiac surgery, and bleeding as well as coagulopathy following traumatic injury.

RESUMEN

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a severe disease caused by metabolic disorders, particularly carbohydrate metabolism disorders. The disease is a fatal global trouble characterised by high prevalence rates, causing death, blindness, kidney failure, myocardial infarction, amputation of lower limps, and stroke. Biochemical metabolic pathways like glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, glycogenesis, and glycogenolysis are critical pathways that regulate blood glucose levels with the glucokinase (GK) enzyme playing a central role in glucose homeostasis. Any factor that perturbs the aforementioned biochemical pathways is detrimental. Endocrinological, neurophysiological, and molecular biological pathways that are linked to carbohydrate metabolism should be studied, grasped, and manipulated in order to alleviate T2DM global chaos. The challenge, howbeit, is that, since the body is an integration of systems that complement one another, studying one "isolated" system is not very useful. This paper serves to discuss endocrinology, neurophysiology, and molecular biology pathways that are involved in carbohydrate metabolism in relation to T2DM.

RESUMEN

The medical field is looking for drugs and/or ways of delivering drugs without harming patients. A number of severe drug side effects are reported, such as acute kidney injury (AKI), hepatotoxicity, skin rash, and so on. Nanomedicine has come to the rescue. Liposomal nanoparticles have shown great potential in loading drugs, and delivering drugs to specific targeted sites, hence achieving a needed bioavailability and steady state concentration, which is achieved by a controlled drug release ability by the nanoparticles. The liposomal nanoparticles can be conjugated to cancer receptor tags that give the anticancer-loaded nanoparticles specificity to deliver anticancer agents only at cancerous sites, hence circumventing destruction of normal cells. Also, the particles are biocompatible. The drugs are shielded by attack from the liver and other cytochrome P450 enzymes before reaching the desired sites. The challenge, however, is that the drug release is slow by these nanoparticles on their own. Scientists then came up with several ways to enhance drug release. Magnetic fields, UV light, infrared light, and so on are amongst the enhancers used by scientists to potentiate drug release from nanoparticles. In this paper, synthesis of liposomal nanoparticle formulations (liposomal-quantum dots (L-QDs), liposomal-quantum dots loaded with topotecan (L-QD-TPT)) and their analysis (cytotoxicity, drug internalization, loading efficiency, drug release rate, and the uptake of the drug and nanoparticles by the HeLa cells) are discussed.

RESUMEN

Cellular microbiology, which is the interaction between harmful microbes and infected cells, is important in the determination of the bacterial infection processes and in the progression of data of different cellular mechanisms. The therapeutic role of bacteria has gained attention since the known methods such as radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy have got drawbacks. Bacteria have demonstrated a favorable impact in treating cancer through eradication of tumors. Bacteria, in cancer treatment, have proven to be promising and have been shown in some of the previous work that it can successfully suppress the growth of tumors. In this paper, we analyzed the difficulties and settlement for using bacteria in cancer therapy as well the mechanisms in which bacteria works in order to achieve tumor eradication. Future works may focus on the use of bacteria along with other treatments in order to achieve effective tumor therapy.

RESUMEN

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a pathogen causing fatal disease in a wide range of carnivores. Sequence analysis of CDV strains has been classified into several geographically-related lineages, and the evolution and emergence of these strains are not fully yet investigated. In this study, the complete H gene sequences of 15 CDV strains isolated on Vero DST cell culture from clinical samples of vaccinated domestic dogs in Vietnam were investigated. Fifteen CDV isolates belonging to Asia-1 CDV variants were predominant antigenic type circulated in Central and Northern Vietnam with notable differences regarding the region and some genetic variation, and the most closely related Asia-1 variants lineage reported in Vietnam, China, Taiwan, and Japan. All identified CDV isolates clustered into 2 novel clades Asia-1-C1 and Asia-1-C2. The major amino acid mutation variants of Vietnamese Asia-1 CDV strains were found at sites 51, 157, 159, 160, 171, 178, 186, 235, 245, 277, 288, 313, 324, 330, 337, 345, 358, 359, 365, 383, 446, 475, 517, 530, 584, 598 which include N-glycosylation sites and neutralizing epitope regions in H gene. The results of the virus neutralization titer (VNT) assay showed that the dogs vaccinated with commercial vaccines had significantly low VNT (4.89 and 12.8) against field CDV isolate strains (VNUA NA04, HN18, and NB05) isolated in northern and central Vietnam, respectively. These data may suggest the need for further research in CDV monitoring and development of preventative measures against CDV in Vietnam.

RESUMEN

African swine fever (ASF) has been considered as one of the most important and devastating swine diseases with high mortality rates. Since effective vaccines and treatment are not available, mass euthanasia of infected and exposed pigs has been known to be the best measure to control ASF. Although composting has been proved to be a safe method for the rapid disposal of animal carcasses during outbreaks, there is no information about the effect of composting on the viability of ASF virus in swine carcasses. This study investigates the survival of the ASF virus in swine carcasses during composting. The findings suggested that the DNA of the ASF virus was detected in all samples tested. On the contrary, infectious ASF virus particles were rapidly destroyed at day 3.

RESUMEN

The effects of moisture content, grain size, temperature, major elemental composition, and the pH of soils on the radon emanation and diffusion coefficients were evaluated in this study. The emanation and diffusion coefficients are strongly influenced by moisture content and grain size. The radon emanation coefficient increased and the diffusion coefficient decreased with decreasing particle size. However, for soils with large particle sizes, the radon emanation and diffusion coefficient remain almost unchanged with variation in grain size. Comparing five different sized soil particles, the emanation coefficient increased and the diffusion coefficient decreased with moisture content. The radon emanation coefficient reached a constant value with different moisture contents depending on the range of grain sizes. The saturation emanation coefficient for less than 0.1, 0.1-0.2, 0.2-0.3, 0.3-0.5, and more than 0.5 mm sized soil grain ranges are 0.47, 0.42, 0.35, 0.26 and 0.23, respectively, with saturation moisture contents of 16%, 14%, 10%, 6% and 4%, respectively. A drastic increase in radon emanation is found at smaller grain sizes with increasing moisture content. Based on the content of major elements and pH of the soils, the multiple regression indicates that the radon emanation coefficient appears to be significantly dependent on iron content and pH. Effective diffusion coefficient values calculated in our study agree with the results calculated by a previous model. Experimental values show that the temperature dependence of the radon diffusion coefficient follows Arrhenius behavior.

RESUMEN

The clinical efficacy of the monotherapy involving the administration of a high dose of dihydroartemisinin (DHA 900 mg) for 5 days was compared with that of the combination regimen (DHA 600 mg + mefloquine [MQ] 750 mg) in an open randomized study in 90 patients with uncomplicated falciparum malaria in the southern part of Viet Nam. Patients were randomly treated with the DHA-5 day monotherapy regimen (300, 300, 100, 100, and 100 mg given at 0, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h) or the DHA-MQ combination regimen (300 mg DHA at 0 h, then 300 mg DHA plus 750 mg MQ at 24 h). The end points for comparison were the parasite and fever clearance times (PCT and FCT) and recrudescence rates (by day 28 for DHA-5 days and day 42 for DHA-MQ). Eighty-nine patients completed the trial per protocol, including 45 cases receiving DHA-5 day and 44 receiving DHA-MQ. There was no difference in clinical manifestations, parasitemia density or other laboratory tests between the two patient groups. The PCTs were 35.3 +/- 17.4 h (mean +/- SD; range, 12-96) and 37.8 +/- 19.2 h (range, 12-96), respectively for the DHA-5 day and DHA-MQ regimens (P > 0.05). Twelve patients receiving the DHA-5 day regimen relapsed with falciparum malaria by day 28 (26.7%) and 5 patients receiving the DHA-MQ regimen relapsed by day 42 (11.4%) (P=0.07). Survival analysis showed that the DHA-5 day regimen had a radical cure rate significantly lower than that of the DHA-MQ regimen (P=0.003). The high dose of DHA in the monotherapy regimen did not increase the efficacy of the treatment of patients with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria. The DHA combination regimens are suggested to be the better regimens for DHA.

RESUMEN

We tailored the size distribution of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) on graphene nanoplatelets at a given metal loading by using low-temperature atomic layer deposition carried out in a fluidized bed reactor operated at atmospheric pressure. The Pt NPs deposited at low temperature (100 °C) after 10 cycles were more active and stable towards the propene oxidation reaction than their high-temperature counterparts. Crucially, the gap in the catalytic performance was retained even after prolonged periods of time (>24 hours) at reaction temperatures as high as 450 °C. After exposure to such harsh conditions the Pt NPs deposited at 100 °C still retained a size distribution that is narrower than the one of the as-synthesized NPs obtained at 250 °C. The difference in performance correlated with the difference in the number of facet sites as estimated after the catalytic test. Our approach provides not only a viable route for the scalable synthesis of stable supported Pt NPs with tailored size distributions but also a tool for studying the structure-function relationship.

RESUMEN

Eight oleanane-type saponins, glomerulosides A-H, were isolated from leaves of Glochidion glomerulatum. All isolated compounds were evaluated for cytotoxic activity on four human cancer cell lines, A-549, HT-29, OVCAR, and MCF-7. Glomerulosides C and E, which contain a benzoyloxy group at C-22, showed significant cytotoxic activities against the A-549, HT-29, and OVCAR cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 5.9 to 9.8µM. Glomeruloside A showed cytotoxicity on HT-29 and OVCAR cell lines with IC50 values of 7.3 and 6.6µM, respectively. Moreover, glomeruloside B exhibited significant activity on A-549 and HT-29 cancer cell lines with IC50 values of 9.7 and 7.5µM. In contrast, glomerulosides F-H, lacking a benzoyloxy group, showed only moderate cytotoxic activity.
