RESUMEN

The regulation of seed development is critical for determining crop yield. Auxins are vital phytohormones that play roles in various aspects of plant growth and development. However, its role in amino acid biosynthesis and metabolism in seeds is not fully understood. In this study, we identified a mutant with small seeds through forward genetic screening in Medicago truncatula. The mutated gene encodes MtPIN4, an ortholog of PIN1. Using molecular approaches and integrative omics analyses, we discovered that auxin and amino acid content significantly decreased in mtpin4 seeds, highlighting the role of MtPIN4-mediated auxin distribution in amino acid biosynthesis and metabolism. Furthermore, genetic analysis revealed that the three orthologs of PIN1 have specific and overlapping functions in various developmental processes in M. truncatula. Our findings emphasize the significance of MtPIN4 in seed development and offer insights into the molecular mechanisms governing the regulation of seed size in crops. This knowledge could be applied to enhance crop quality by targeted manipulation of seed protein regulatory pathways.

OBJECTIVE: Using the preoperative pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) and the monocyte to high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR) to reflect inflammation, immunity, and cholesterol metabolism, we aim to develop and visualize a novel nomogram model for predicting the survival outcomes in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: A total of 172 patients with CRC who underwent radical resection were retrospectively analyzed. Survival analysis was conducted after patients were grouped according to the optimal cut-off values of PIV and MHR. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using Cox proportional hazards regression to screen the independent prognostic factors. Based on these factors, a nomogram was constructed and validated. RESULTS: The PIV was significantly associated with tumor location (P < 0.001), tumor maximum diameter (P = 0.008), and T stage (P = 0.019). The MHR was closely related to gender (P = 0.016), tumor maximum diameter (P = 0.002), and T stage (P = 0.038). Multivariate analysis results showed that PIV (Hazard Ratio (HR) = 2.476, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 1.410-4.348, P = 0.002), MHR (HR = 3.803, 95%CI = 1.609-8.989, P = 0.002), CEA (HR = 1.977, 95%CI = 1.121-3.485, P = 0.019), and TNM stage (HR = 1.759, 95%CI = 1.010-3.063, P = 0.046) were independent prognostic indicators for overall survival (OS). A nomogram incorporating these variables was developed, demonstrating robust predictive accuracy for OS. The area under the curve (AUC) values of the predictive model for 1-, 2-, and 3- year are 0.791,0.768,0.811, respectively. The calibration curves for the probability of survival at 1-, 2-, and 3- year presented a high degree of credibility. Furthermore, Decision curve analysis (DCA) for the probability of survival at 1-, 2-, and 3- year demonstrate the significant clinical utility in predicting survival outcomes. CONCLUSION: Preoperative PIV and MHR are independent risk factors for CRC prognosis. The novel developed nomogram demonstrates a robust predictive ability, offering substantial utility in facilitating the clinical decision-making process.

Two pink-pigmented bacterial strains, designated NBU2971T and NBU2972T, were isolated from the pit mud of a Chinese liquor. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences suggested that strains NBU2971T and NBU2972T formed a distinct lineage within the family Hymenobacteraceae and were closely related to members of the genus Pontibacter. 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain NBU2971T showed highest similarity of 97.9 % to Pontibacter arcticus 2b14T, and strain NBU2972T showed the highest similarity of 96.9 % to Pontibacter deserti JC215T. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between the two novel strains were 95.2, 73.8 and 19.6 %, respectively, suggesting that they represent different species. The ANI and dDDH values between two novel strains and related species of genus Pontibacter were well below the threshold limit for prokaryotic species delineation. The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains NBU2971T and NBU2972T were 51.3 and 44.5 mol%, respectively. The major cellular fatty acids of the two novel strains were iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B). The major polar lipid of both novel strains was phosphatidylethanolamine. The only respiratory quinone was MK-7. Combining results of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data, strains NBU2971T and NBU2972T are considered to be two representatives in the genus Pontibacter, which the name Pontibacter liquoris sp. nov. and Pontibacter vulgaris sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains of the new species are NBU2971T (=KCTC 82916T=MCCC 1K06395T) and NBU2972T (=KCTC 82917T=MCCC 1K06396T), respectively.

In this work, high-performance two-dimensional (2D) graphene-based single-atom electrocatalysts (ZZ/ZA-MNxCy) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were screened out using machine learning (ML). A model was built for the fast prediction of electrocatalysts and two descriptors valence electron correction (VEc) and degree of construction differences (DC) were proposed to improve the accuracy of the model prediction. Two evaluation criteria, high-performance catalyst retention rate rR and high-performance catalyst occupancy rate rO, were proposed to evaluate the accuracy of ML models in high-performance catalyst screening. The addition of VEc and DC in the model could change the mean absolute error (MAEtest) of the test set, the coefficient of determination (R2test) of the test set, rO, and rR from 0.334 V, 0.683, 0.222, and 0.360 to 0.271 V, 0.774, 0.421, and 0.671, respectively. The partially screened potential high-performance ORR electrocatalysts such as ZZ-CoN4 and ZZ-CoN3C1 were also further investigated using a Density Functional Theory (DFT) method, which confirmed the accuracy of the ML model (MAE = 0.157 V, R2 = 0.821).

Utilizing sewage sludge (SS) to calcinate sulphoaluminate cement (SAC) is a promising technology for low-carbon transition of cement industry, but the unclear effects of SS-contained heavy metals limit the application of this technology. In this study, the effects of SS addition on the calcination of SAC clinker and the transformation of heavy metals were studied from the aspects of mineral phase change, microstructure evolution and heavy metal speciation respectively, covering the mineral formation temperature 900-1250 °C. The results show that the added SS will reduce the formation temperature and change the reaction pathways of mineral phases. When the content of SS increases from 10% to 25%, the compositions of mesophases CaO·Al2O3 and 4CaO·2SiO2·CaSO4 increase by 6.33% and 9.73%, respectively. Meanwhile, the formation of minerals will solidify Zn, Ni, Mn, Cu, Cr, and convert them into a more stable fraction (residual fraction), indicating a lower probability to harm the environment. Moreover, heavy metals present different migration behaviors. After calcination, Mn migrates from SS to 4CaO·Al2O3·Fe2O3 (52.48%), while Zn prefers to enter 3CaO·3Al2O3·CaSO4 (43.74%) and 4CaO·Al2O3·Fe2O3 (38.06%). This study offers new insights into the mineral formation mechanism and heavy metal transition behaviors of sewage sludge-based SAC.

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is a potential phytoremediator that can reduce soil cadmium (Cd) contamination. Pot and hydroponic experiments were conducted to investigate the difference in absorption kinetics, translocation patterns, accumulation capacity, and extraction amounts between two leading tobacco cultivars in China. We studied the chemical forms and subcellular distribution of Cd in the plants to understand the diversity of the detoxification mechanism of the cultivars. The concentration-dependent kinetics of Cd accumulation in leaves, stems, roots, and xylem sap for cultivars Zhongyan 100 (ZY100) and K326, fitted well with the Michaelis-Menten equation. K326 exhibited high biomass, Cd tolerance, Cd translocation, and phytoextraction abilities. The acetic acid, sodium chloride, and water-extractable fractions accounted for > 90% of Cd in all ZY100 tissues but only in K326 roots and stems. Moreover, the acetic acid and NaCl fractions were the predominant storage forms, while the water fraction was the transport form. The ethanol fraction also contributed significantly to Cd storage in K326 leaves. As the Cd treatment increased, more NaCl and water fractions were found in K326 leaves, while only NaCl fractions increased in ZY100 leaves. For subcellular distribution, > 93% Cd proportions were primarily stored in both cultivars' soluble or cell wall fraction. The proportion of Cd in the cell wall fraction of ZY100 roots was less than that of K326, while that proportion in the soluble fraction in ZY100 leaves was higher than in K326 leaves. These findings demonstrate that Cd accumulation patterns, detoxification, and storage strategies differ between the cultivars, providing a deeper understanding of Cd tolerance and accumulation mechanism in tobacco plants. It also guides the screening of germplasm resources or gene modification to improve the Cd phytoextraction efficiency of tobacco.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed malignant tumors in the world. In recent years, more and more inhibitors against gene targets have been found to be beneficial to survival. However, the function of homo-sapiens histone H3 associated protein kinase (GSG2) in HCC has not been completely understood. METHODS: The expression of GSG2 in HCC tissues was detected by immunohistochemical staining. The lentivirus-mediated short hairpin RNA (shRNA) was used to knockdown GSG2 expression in HCC cell lines Hep3B2.1-7 and SK-HEP-1. Cell proliferation and colony formation were detected by MTT assay and colony formation assay, respectively, and flow cytometry assay was used to investigate the cell apoptosis in vitro. Mice xenograft model was constructed to detect the functions of GSG2 on tumor growth in vivo. Human Apoptosis Antibody Array was conducted to find the possible mechanism. RESULTS: GSG2 was overexpressed in HCC tissues compared with adjacent normal tissues. The knockdown of GSG2 had the functions of inhibiting the progression of HCC, including inhibiting cell proliferation and colony formation and promoting cell apoptosis. Compared with shCtrl group, the shGSG2 group expressed higher apoptotic genes such as caspase 3, caspase 8, Fas and FasL, while lower IGF1, Bcl2 and Bcl-w. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that knockdown of GSG2 suppresses the tumor growth in vitro and vivo. Therefore, GSG2 might play an oncogenic role in HCC.

BACKGROUND: Globally, gastric cancer is the third most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death. Proximal and distal gastric cancers have distinct clinical and biological behaviors. The microbial composition and metabolic differences in proximal and distal gastric cancers have not been fully studied and discussed. METHODS: In this study, the gastric microbiome of 13 proximal gastric cancer tissues, 16 distal gastric cancer tissues, and their matched non-tumor tissues were characterized using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Additionally, 10 proximal gastric cancer tissues, 11 distal gastric cancer tissues, and their matched non-tumor tissues were assessed by untargeted metabolomics. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in microbial diversity and richness between the proximal and distal gastric cancer tissues. At the genus level, the abundance of Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, Porphyromonas, Catonella, Proteus, Oribacterium, and Moraxella were significantly increased in Proximal T, whereas that of Methylobacterium_Methylorubrum was significantly increased in Distal T. The untargeted metabolomics analysis revealed 30 discriminative metabolites between Distal T and Distal N. In contrast, there were only 4 discriminative metabolites between Proximal T and Proximal N. In distal gastric cancer, different metabolites were scattered through multiple pathway, including the sphingolipid signaling pathway, arginine biosynthesis, protein digestion and absorption, alanine, aspartate and, glutamate metabolism, etc.In proximal gastric cancer, differential microbial metabolites were mainly related to hormone metabolism. CONCLUSION: Methylobacterium-Methylorubrum was significantly increased in Distal T, positively correlated with cancer-promoting metabolites, and negatively correlated with cancer-inhibiting metabolites. Rikenellaceae_RC_gut_group was significantly increased in Proximal T and positively correlated with cancer-promoting metabolites. Further studies regarding the functions of the above-mentioned microorganisms and metabolites were warranted as the results may reveal the different mechanisms underlying the occurrence and development of proximal and distal gastric cancers and provide a basis for future treatments. IMPORTANCE: First, the differences in microbial composition and metabolites between the proximal and distal gastric cancers were described; then, the correlation between microbiota and metabolites was preliminarily discussed. These microbes and metabolites deserve further investigations as they may reveal the different mechanisms involved in the occurrence and development of proximal and distal gastric cancers and provide a basis for future treatments.

We propose a mechanism to achieve the group velocity control of bifurcation light via an imaginary coupling effect in the non-reciprocal lattice. The physical model is composed of two-layer photonic lattices with non-reciprocal coupling in each unit cell, which can support a real energy spectrum with a pair of Dirac points due to the hermicity. Furthermore, we show that the systems experience topological phase transition at the Dirac points, allowing the existence of topological edge states on the left or right boundaries of respective lattice layers. By adjusting the imaginary coupling and the wave number, the group velocity of the light wave can be manipulated, and bifurcation light transmission can be achieved both at the Dirac points and the condition without the group velocity dispersion. Our work might guide the design of photonic directional couplers with group velocity control functions.

Persistent apical periodontitis is a critical challenge for endodontists. Developing root canal filling materials with continuous antibacterial effects and tightly sealed root canals are essential strategies to avoid the failure of root canal therapy and prevent persistent apical periodontitis. We modified the EndoREZ root canal sealer with the antibacterial material dimethylaminododecyl methacrylate (DMADDM) and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The mechanical properties of the modified root canal sealer were tested. The biocompatibility of this sealer was verified in vitro and in vivo. Multispecies biofilms were constructed to assess the antibacterial effects of the modified root canal sealer. We applied magnetic fields and examined the extent of root canal sealer penetration in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that EndoREZ sealer containing 2.5% DMADDM and 1% MNP had biological safety and apical sealing ability. In addition, the modified sealer could increase the sealer penetration range and exert significant antibacterial effects on multispecies biofilms under an external magnetic field. According to the in vivo study, the apices of the root canals with the sealer containing 2.5% DMADDM and 1% MNP showed no significant resorption and exhibited only a slight increase in the periodontal ligament space, with a good inhibitory effect on persistent apical periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to assess short-term outcomes in single compartment osteoarthritis patients associated with the coronal tibiofemoral subluxation (CTFS) of the knee joint after Oxford unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (OUKA), and to establish the potential impact of the degree of CTFS on operative outcomes. METHODS: Data pertaining to 183 patients with medial compartment osteoarthritis that underwent OUKA treatment between February 2016 and June 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. The presence and degree of severity of CTFS were assessed using preoperative weight-bearing anteroposterior X-ray images of the knee. Patients were stratified into three subgroups based upon the observed degree of subluxation: a normal group, a mild subluxation group (CTFS < 0.5 cm), and a severe subluxation group (CTFS ≥ 0.5 cm). Anterior and posterior X-ray examination of the knee was conducted at the time of most recent follow-up for each patient to assess the degree of CTFS correction following OUKA. Clinical function was assessed using Oxford knee score (OKS) and Hospital for Special Surgery score (HSS) values, while pain was rated using visual-analog scale (VAS) scores. The mechanical femoral tibial angle (mFTA), range of motion (ROM), and complication rates in these three groups were additionally compared. RESULTS: The average follow-up duration for patients in this study was 24.1 months (range: 17-32 months). There were no significant differences in patient age, sex, body mass index (BMI), follow-up duration, mFTA, ROM, OKS, HSS, or VAS scores among these three groups (P > 0.05). After surgery, OKS and HSS scores declined significantly, but no differences in these scores were observed among groups (P > 0.05). Of these patients, 135 (73.8%) were satisfied with the operation, of whom 80 (43.7%) were very satisfied. There were no significant differences in ROM or VAS scores among groups (P > 0.05). The degree of CTFS for patients in the mild and severe subluxation groups was significantly improved following OUKA relative to preoperative values such that the degree of postoperative CTFS did not differ significantly among these groups (P > 0.05). Postoperative mFTA was also significantly improved in these three patient subgroups (P < 0.05). No patients experienced operative complications over the follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: OUKA can successfully improve clinical symptoms in patients with single compartmental osteoarthritis. Moreover, OUKA can effectively correct CTFS of the knee in these patients, and the degree of preoperative CTFS has no impact on surgical efficacy. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to investigate the effects of protopanaxadiol and protopanaxatriol ginsenosides on aconitine-induced cardiomyocyte injury and their regulatory mechanisms. The effects of ginsenosides on aconitine-induced cardiomyocyte damage were initially evaluated using H9c2 cells, and the molecular mechanisms were elucidated using molecular docking and western blotting. The changes in enzyme content, reactive oxygen species (ROS), calcium (Ca2+) concentration, and apoptosis were determined. Furthermore, an aconitine-induced cardiac injury rat model was established, the cardiac injury and serum physiological and biochemical indexes were measured, and the effects of ginsenoside were observed. The results showed that ginsenoside Rb1 significantly increased aconitine-induced cell viability, and its binding conformation with protein kinase B (AKT) protein was the most significant. In vitro and in vivo, Rb1 protects cardiomyocytes from aconitine-induced injury by regulating oxidative stress levels and maintaining Ca2+ concentration homeostasis. Moreover, Rb1 activated the PI3K/AKT pathway, downregulated Cleaved caspase-3 and Bax, and upregulated Bcl-2 expression. In conclusion, Rb1 protected H9c2 cells from aconitine-induced injury by maintaining Ca2+ homeostasis and activating the PI3K/AKT pathway to induce a cascade response of downstream proteins, thereby protecting cardiomyocytes from damage. These results suggested that ginsenoside Rb1 may be a potential cardiac protective drug.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths with high heterogeneity. There is currently a paucity of clinically applicable molecular classification system to guide precise medicine. METHODS: A total of 70 Chinese patients with GC were included in this study and whole-exome sequencing was performed. Unsupervised clustering was undertaken to identify genomic subgroups, based on mutational signature, copy number variation, neoantigen, clonality, and essential genomic alterations. Subgroups were characterized by clinicopathological factors, molecular features, and prognosis. RESULTS: We identified 32 significantly mutated genes (SMGs), including TP53, ARID1A, PIK3CA, CDH1, and RHOA. Of these, PREX2, PIEZO1, and FSIP2 have not been previously reported in GC. Using a novel genome-based classification method that integrated multidimensional genomic features, we categorized GC into four subtypes with distinct clinical phenotypes and prognosis. Subtype 1, which was predominantly Lauren intestinal type, harbored recurrent TP53 mutation and ERBB2 amplification, high tumor mutation burden (TMB)/tumor neoantigen burden (TNB), and intratumoral heterogeneity, with a liver metastasis tendency. Subtype 2 tended to occur at an elder age, accompanying with frequent TP53 and SYNE1 mutations, high TMB/TNB, and was associated with poor prognosis. Subtype 3 and subtype 4 included patients with mainly diffuse/mixed type tumors, high frequency of peritoneal metastasis, and genomical stability, whereas subtype 4 was associated with a favorable prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: By integrating multidimensional genomic characteristics, we proposed a novel genomic classification system of GC associated with clinical phenotypes and provided a new insight to facilitate genome-guided risk stratification and disease management.

A rich of 3,4-seco-lupane triterpenoids including chiisanoside (CSS), divaroside (DVS), sessiloside-A1 (SSA) and chiisanogenin (CSG) were isolated from the ethanol extract of the leaves of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus. On the basis of previous studies, this article focused on four important components of 3,4-seco-lupane triterpenoids in Acanthopanax sessiliflorus leaves and explored their protective effects against aconitine-induced cardiomyocyte injury and their molecular mechanisms. The results showed that pretreatment with 3,4-seco-lupane triterpenoids could effectively increase cell viability, reduce CK-MB and LDH activities, reduce ROS production, maintain calcium concentration balance, and inhibit apoptosis, with divaroside having the best effect. In addition, Western blot results showed that divaroside down-regulated Cleaved caspase-3 and Bax and up-regulated Bcl-2 expression through activating the PI3 K/AKT pathway. However, the LY294002 inhibitor reversed this situation. This suggests that 3,4-seco-lupane triterpenoids may be a new hotspot for potential myocardial protective drugs research.

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of primary hyperparathyroidism and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is common and may be associative with more aggressive PTC, with higher rates of extrathyroidal extension and multicentricity. However, it is unclear whether secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is associated with more invasive PTC in terms of morbidity, tumor pathological characteristics, and prognosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the rate and tumor characteristics of PTC in patients with SHPT. METHODS: A total of 531 patients diagnosed with SHPT who underwent surgery from August 2013 to December 2018 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University were evaluated retrospectively. Patient demographics, surgical records, and follow-up information were recorded and analyzed. Control subjects were matched to the enrolled patients in a 1:4 ratio in terms of age, sex and pathological subtype. RESULTS: Among the 531 patients with SHPT who underwent surgery, 34 had coexisting PTC and PTC + SHPT (6.4%). The mean tumor diameter in the PTC + SHPT group was smaller than that in the PTC group (5.57 mm vs 9.00 mm, p < 0.001). The proportion of papillary thyroid micro-carcinoma in the PTC + SHPT group was significantly higher than that in the PTC group (29 [85.29%] vs. 86[63.24%], p = 0.014). There were no statistically significant differences between groups in terms of tumor multicentricity (15 [44.12%] vs 39 [28.68%], p = 0.066), tumor bilaterality (9 [26.47%] vs. 29 [21.32%], p = 0.499), tumor extrathyroidal extension (2 [5.88%] vs. 19 [13.97%], p = 0.255), or lymph node (LN) metastasis rate (12 [35.29%] vs. 49 [36.03%], p = 1.000). However, the PTC + SHPT and PTC groups were significantly different in terms of contralateral thyroidectomy (10 [29.41%] vs. 70 [51.47%], p = 0.023) and lymph node dissection (22 [64.71%] vs. 125 [91.91%], p < 0.001).There was no significant difference between the PTC + SHPT and PTC groups in terms of prognostic staging (33 [97.06%] vs. 122 [89.71%], p = 0.309) or recurrence (mean follow-up time: 36 months vs. 39 months, p = 0.33). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of PTC is high in patients with SHPT; compared with PTC in the general population, most papillary thyroid carcinomas with SHPT are occult thyroid carcinomas and present no significant difference in terms of tumor pathological features and prognostic staging. It is necessary for surgeons to perform more adequate preoperative examination and be more careful during surgery to avoid missing the coexistence of PTC in patients with SHPT.

OBJECTIVE: Arthroscopy is commonly used to treat popliteal cysts, but the influence of the cyst wall on treatment outcomes remains controversial. The goal of this study was to compare clinical outcomes associated with arthroscopic cyst wall resection versus preservation in patients undergoing treatment for popliteal cysts. METHODS: We searched the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases to identify all relevant articles published as of April 2020. STATA v15.1 was used for all statistical analyses. Relative risk (RR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) pertaining to study outcomes were calculated. Study heterogeneity was evaluated using the I2 statistic and the χ2 test, with I2 > 50% and P < 0.10 as respective significance threshold values. The risk of bias was gauged with the Cochrane Collaboration's risk of bias tool and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). RESULTS: In total, 18 relevant studies were included in this meta-analysis, of which 16 were observational studies and 2 were randomized controlled trials (RCTs). These studies included 573 total patients, of whom 346 underwent arthroscopic cyst resection and 227 underwent arthroscopic cyst preservation. Pooled analyses revealed that clinical outcomes (RR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.94-1.00) and postoperative recurrence rates (RR = 0.90, 95% CI 0.85-0.95) were significantly better among patients that underwent cyst wall resection relative to those that underwent cyst wall preservation (RR = 0, 95% CI 0-0.02 and RR = 0.05, 95% CI 0.02-0.10, respectively). However, complications occurred more often in the cyst wall resection group relative to the cyst wall preservation group (RR = 0.05, 95% CI 0.01-0.12 vs. RR = 0.01, 95% CI 0-0.03). Sensitivity analyses confirmed the stability of these pooled results, and we detected no significant risk of publication bias. CONCLUSIONS: Relative to cyst wall preservation, popliteal cyst wall arthroscopic resection can yield more satisfactory clinical results and decrease rates of recurrence, but can also increase the incidence of complications. Future prospective studies comparing the outcomes associated with cyst wall resection and preservation will be required to validate our results.

We study, to the best of our knowledge, the first observations of light propagation in synthetic photonic lattice with anti-parity-time symmetry by tuning the gain or loss of two coupled fiber rings alternatively and corresponding phase distribution periodically. By tuning the phase φ and the wave number Q in the lattice, asymmetric transmission of the light field can be achieved for both long and short loops when φ≠nπ/2 (n is an integer). Further investigations demonstrate that asymmetric localization of the light field in the long loop and symmetric diffraction-free transmission in two loops can both be realized by changing these two parameters. Our work provides a new method to obtain anti-parity-time symmetry in synthetic photonic lattice and paves a broad way to achieve novel optical manipulation in photonic devices.

The resistivity to oxidation of small copper clusters, Cun+ (n ≤ 5), in the gas phase with a precise atomicity at the molecular level was investigated using a combination of thermal desorption spectrometry and mass spectrometry. Oxide clusters, CunOm+, with more O atoms than those present with a stoichiometry of n : m = 1 : 1 were produced at room temperature in the presence of O2, and the weakly bound excess oxygen atoms involved in the clusters were removed by post heating. Non-oxidized Cu2+ and Cu3+ clusters were formed in the range of 323-923 K, whereas partially oxidized clusters, Cu4O2+ and Cu5O2+, were generated for n = 4 and 5. Considering the fact that CunOm+ (m = n/2 + 1) tends to be generated for n ≥ 6, the small copper clusters were concluded to be resistive to oxidation. The possible reaction paths for the oxidation of Cu2+ and Cu4+ clusters were obtained by density functional calculations, which were consistent with the experimental findings. The oxidation states of the Cu atoms in the clusters were discussed based on the natural charges of the atoms.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Terlipressin has been shown to be effective in controlling variceal bleeding and decreasing associated mortality. Terlipressin is a synthetic analogue of vasopressin and is safer than arginine vasopressin; it induces selective vasoconstriction by stimulating the vasopressin V1 receptors that are predominantly located in the splanchnic tissues. However, severe hyponatraemia may occur during terlipressin treatment, resulting in neurological manifestations. CASE SUMMARY: We describe two patients who presented a marked decrease in serum sodium levels and developed obvious neurological manifestations after receiving terlipressin therapy. Although the two patients were given sodium supplementation, their serum sodium levels continually declined. After the discontinuation of terlipressin, their serum sodium levels rapidly recovered to normal limits, and the neurological manifestations subsequently disappeared in both patients. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: Some studies have reported hyponatraemia as a side effect of terlipressin; however, severe hyponatraemia with neurological manifestations has rarely been reported. We presented the cases of 2 patients with obvious neurological manifestations after receiving terlipressin therapy. Severe hyponatraemia may develop in patients treated with terlipressin, resulting in associated neurological symptoms. Therefore, the close monitoring of serum sodium is necessary.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination is one of the most serious global environmental problems, and phytoremediation, which uses Cd-accumulator plants, is potentially one of the sustainable solutions. Pot experiments with natural and Cd-amended soils were conducted to investigate the accumulation of heavy metals in 10 leading cultivars of tobacco in China. The extraction ability and profiles of Cd accumulation among plant organs were also analyzed. The tobacco roots accumulated cobalt, nickel, and Cd, while the leaf highly bioaccumulated Cd and lowly accumulated zinc, selenium and mercury. The transport from the tobacco stem to the leaf plays a critical role in the accumulation of these elements. The ratios of Cd concentration in the leaves at lower, middle and upper positions were comparatively stable. The high Cd-extracting cultivars were "Hongda", "NC89" and "Zhongyan 100" when grown in normal soils, "CuiBi 1" and "Hongda" in moderately contaminated soils, and "YuYan 87", "LongJiang 851" and "K326" in severely contaminated soils. Tobacco leaves could accumulate about 80% of the total Cd extracted from the soil by the plant. Considering the Cd-extraction limitations exhibited by leading tobacco cultivars, screening of germplasm resources for high or low levels of Cd-accumulation is still an important target for the future.
