RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is commonly diagnosed at an advanced stage. Liquid biopsy approaches may facilitate detection of early stage PDAC when curative treatments can be employed. DESIGN: To assess circulating marker discrimination in training, testing and validation patient cohorts (total n=426 patients), plasma markers were measured among PDAC cases and patients with chronic pancreatitis, colorectal cancer (CRC), and healthy controls. Using CA19-9 as an anchor marker, measurements were made of two protein markers (TIMP1, LRG1) and cell-free DNA (cfDNA) pancreas-specific methylation at 9 loci encompassing 61 CpG sites. RESULTS: Comparative methylome analysis identified nine loci that were differentially methylated in exocrine pancreas DNA. In the training set (n=124 patients), cfDNA methylation markers distinguished PDAC from healthy and CRC controls. In the testing set of 86 early stage PDAC and 86 matched healthy controls, CA19-9 had an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.88 (95% CI 0.83 to 0.94), which was increased by adding TIMP1 (AUC 0.92; 95% CI 0.88 to 0.96; p=0.06), LRG1 (AUC 0.92; 95% CI 0.88 to 0.96; p=0.02) or exocrine pancreas-specific cfDNA methylation markers at nine loci (AUC 0.92; 95% CI 0.88 to 0.96; p=0.02). In the validation set of 40 early stage PDAC and 40 matched healthy controls, a combined panel including CA19-9, TIMP1 and a 9-loci cfDNA methylation panel had greater discrimination (AUC 0.86, 95% CI 0.77 to 0.95) than CA19-9 alone (AUC 0.82; 95% CI 0.72 to 0.92). CONCLUSION: A combined panel of circulating markers including proteins and methylated cfDNA increased discrimination compared with CA19-9 alone for early stage PDAC.

RESUMEN

Over the past three decades, considerable efforts have been expended on understanding the Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) signaling pathway in leukemia, following the identification of the JAK2V617F mutation in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). The aim of this review is to summarize the latest progress in our understanding of the involvement of the JAK/STAT signaling pathway in the development of leukemia. We also attempt to provide insights into the current use of JAK/STAT inhibitors in leukemia therapy and explore pertinent clinical trials in this field.

RESUMEN

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are of great potential for wastewater remediation and chemical energy recovery. Nevertheless, limited by inefficient electron transfer between microorganisms and electrode, the remediation capacity and output power density of MFCs are still far away from the demand of practical application. Herein, a pore-matching strategy is reported to develop uniform electroactive biofilms by inoculating microorganisms inside a pore-matched sponge, which is assembled of core-shell polyaniline@carbon nanotube (PANI@CNT). The maximum power density achieved by the PANI@CNT bioanode is 7549.4 ± 27.6 mW m-2 , which is higher than the excellent MFCs with proton exchange membrane reported to date, while the coulombic efficiency also attains a considerable 91.7 ± 1.2%. The PANI@CNT sponge enriches the exoelectrogen Geobacter significantly, and is proved to play the role of conductive pili in direct electron transfer as it down-regulates the gene encoding pilA. This work exemplifies a practicable strategy to develop excellent bioanode to boost electron extraction in MFCs and provides in-depth insights into the enhancement mechanism.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas is a precursor of pancreatic cancer. While earlier research has shown a high prevalence of synchronous/metachronous extrapancreatic tumors in IPMN patients, these studies have often been small with retrospective data collection. The aim of the study was to examine absolute and relative risks of non-pancreatic gastrointestinal (GI) cancer precursors and mortality in histologically confirmed IPMN. METHODS: Through the nationwide ESPRESSO histopathology cohort, we retrieved data on IPMN between 1965 and 2016. Each index case was matched to ≤5 general population controls. Through Cox regression, we estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for future GI cancer precursors and death. RESULTS: A total of 117 patients with IPMN and 539 age- and sex-matched controls were included. Over a median of 2.1 years of follow up, we confirmed two (1.7%) incident GI cancer precursors in IPMN vs. four (0.7%) in controls, corresponding to an HR of 1.89 (95%CI = 0.34-10.55). By contrast, IPMN patients were at increased risk of death (HR 3.61 (95%CI = 1.79-7.27)). The most common cause of death in IPMN was pancreatic cancer (n = 14; 45.2% of all deaths). CONCLUSIONS: We found no association between IPMN and other GI cancer precursors. This argues against comprehensive routine surveillance for other GI cancer precursors in IPMN patients. Mortality was increased in IPMN with pancreatic cancer being the most common cause of death, indicating the need for lifelong follow up in all resected and non-resected patients with IPMN. However, results should be confirmed in larger cohorts.

RESUMEN

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum), which can be used for its root, stem, and leaf as both food and medicine (Prachayasittikul et al. 2018), is widely cultivated in China. The coriander cultivation area of Guanzhong region, including Xi' an, Xianyang, and Weinan, is 20 million m2, which accounts for 85.7% of the total cultivation area in Shaanxi. In September 2022, obvious galls were observed on the roots of coriander plants (cv. Xiaoye) growing in a field in Huyi District, Xi' an City (34°1'26.4"N, 108°31'58.8"E). The diseased plants did not show obvious above-ground symptoms. To identify the species, second-stage juveniles (J2s) and males were collected from soil in the root zone, and adult females were isolated from galls of diseased roots. The perineal patterns of adult females (n = 20) were round to oval, with high dorsal arches and no obvious lateral lines were observed. Morphological measurements of females (n = 20) included body length (L) = 682 ± 56 (554 to 780) µm, body width (BW) = 522 ± 45 (420 to 597) µm, stylet = 14.9 ± 0.9 (13.4 to 16.3) µm, dorsal pharyngeal gland orifice to stylet base (DGO) = 5.3 ± 0.5 (4.3 to 6.3) µm, vulval slit length = 26 ± 2.8 (20 to 32) µm, vulval slit to anus distance = 21 ± 1.7 (18.5 to 26) µm. Measurements of males (n = 8) were L = 1398 ± 57 (1308 to 1450) µm, BW = 28 ± 2.9 (23 to 32) µm, stylet = 16.1 ± 0.8 (15.3 to 17.3) µm, DGO = 4.5 ± 0.5 (3.5 to 4.9) µm, spicules = 27 ± 1.1 (26 to 29) µm. Measurements of J2s (n = 20) were as follows: L = 434 ± 16.8 (391 to 477) µm, BW = 15.6 ± 0.9 (13.7 to 17.3) µm, stylet = 12.6 ± 0.6 (11.3 to 13.6) µm, DGO = 3.9 ± 0.3 (3.4 to 4.5) µm, tail = 52 ± 4.0 (47 to 60) µm, hyaline tail length = 15.6 ± 1.3 (13.6 to 18.6) µm. These morphological characteristics were consistent with those described for Meloidogyne enterolobii (Yang and Eisenback 1983). Ten females were put in 10 tubes for DNA extraction following Htay et al. (2016). The ITS-rDNA sequence was amplified using the primers 18S/26S (Vrain et al. 1992). A 765 bp fragment was obtained and the sequence (GenBank OR789453) was 99.87% identical to sequences of M. enterolobii (MT406251 and MT067559). The mtDNA CoxII-16S sequence was amplified using primers C2F3/1108 (Powers and Harris, 1993). The sequence was 705 bp (OR795028) and 100% identical to sequences of M. enterolobii (MK455870 and MZ643270). A single 236 bp fragment was amplified using species-specific primers Me-F/Me-R, confirming the species as M. enterolobii (Long et al. 2006). The infection test was conducted in a greenhouse at 27 ± 2℃. Eight 2-week-old coriander plants (cv. Xiaoye) were individually grown in pots filled with sterilizer soil and inoculated with 800 J2s hatched from collected M. enterolobii egg masses. Forty-five days after nematode inoculation, the inoculated plants had galled roots like those observed in the field. The reproduction factor (final population density/initial population density) was 11.9 ± 2.0, indicating coriander was a suitable host for M. enterolobii. No symptoms were observed in controls. To our knowledge, this is the first known natural infection of coriander with M. enterolobii in China. M. enterolobii has been reported on various crops in southern provinces of China (EPPO, 2023). Considering the high level of agricultural trade between different regions, there is a high risk of M. enterolobii transmission to Guanzhong region through infested soil and susceptible plant materials. Further monitoring and research on effective control strategies are needed to prevent the spread of this nematode.

RESUMEN

Importance: Weight loss is common in primary care. Among individuals with recent weight loss, the rates of cancer during the subsequent 12 months are unclear compared with those without recent weight loss. Objective: To determine the rates of subsequent cancer diagnoses over 12 months among health professionals with weight loss during the prior 2 years compared with those without recent weight loss. Design, Setting, and Participants: Prospective cohort analysis of females aged 40 years or older from the Nurses' Health Study who were followed up from June 1978 until June 30, 2016, and males aged 40 years or older from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study who were followed up from January 1988 until January 31, 2016. Exposure: Recent weight change was calculated from the participant weights that were reported biennially. The intentionality of weight loss was categorized as high if both physical activity and diet quality increased, medium if only 1 increased, and low if neither increased. Main Outcome and Measures: Rates of cancer diagnosis during the 12 months after weight loss. Results: Among 157 474 participants (median age, 62 years [IQR, 54-70 years]; 111 912 were female [71.1%]; there were 2631 participants [1.7%] who self-identified as Asian, Native American, or Native Hawaiian; 2678 Black participants [1.7%]; and 149 903 White participants [95.2%]) and during 1.64 million person-years of follow-up, 15 809 incident cancer cases were identified (incident rate, 964 cases/100 000 person-years). During the 12 months after reported weight change, there were 1362 cancer cases/100 000 person-years among all participants with recent weight loss of greater than 10.0% of body weight compared with 869 cancer cases/100 000 person-years among those without recent weight loss (between-group difference, 493 cases/100 000 person-years [95% CI, 391-594 cases/100 000 person-years]; P < .001). Among participants categorized with low intentionality for weight loss, there were 2687 cancer cases/100 000 person-years for those with weight loss of greater than 10.0% of body weight compared with 1220 cancer cases/100 000 person-years for those without recent weight loss (between-group difference, 1467 cases/100 000 person-years [95% CI, 799-2135 cases/100 000 person-years]; P < .001). Cancer of the upper gastrointestinal tract (cancer of the esophagus, stomach, liver, biliary tract, or pancreas) was particularly common among participants with recent weight loss; there were 173 cancer cases/100 000 person-years for those with weight loss of greater than 10.0% of body weight compared with 36 cancer cases/100 000 person-years for those without recent weight loss (between-group difference, 137 cases/100 000 person-years [95% CI, 101-172 cases/100 000 person-years]; P < .001). Conclusions and Relevance: Health professionals with weight loss within the prior 2 years had a significantly higher risk of cancer during the subsequent 12 months compared with those without recent weight loss. Cancer of the upper gastrointestinal tract was particularly common among participants with recent weight loss compared with those without recent weight loss.

RESUMEN

The growing demand for pesticide manufacturing and increasing public awareness of sustainable development, have let to urgent requirements for a refined environmental management framework. It is imperative to conduct process-based life cycle assessments (LCAs) to promote clean and environment-friendly technologies. Herein, the cradle-to-gate LCA of glyphosate production was executed as an example to investigate crucial production factors (materials or energy) and multiple environmental impacts during the production processes. Results showed that methanol caused the highest environmental damage in terms of toxicity, with a normalized value of 85.7 × 10-8, followed by coal-fired electricity in 6.00 × 10-8. Furthermore, optimized schemes were proposed, including energy improvement (electricity generated by switching from coal-fired power to solar power) and wastewater targeted conversion. Regarding the normalization results before and after optimization, the latter showed more significant results with the normalized value decreasing by 21.10 × 10-8, while that of the former only decreased by 6.50 × 10-8. This study provides an integrated LCA framework for organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) from upstream control and offers an important supplement to managing the key pollution factors and control links of the OP industry. Moreover, it reveals the positive influence of optimized schemes in facilitating cleaner production technologies, thus ultimately promoting new methodologies for resource recycling.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Emerging evidence implicates the importance of perinatal and early-life exposures in colorectal cancer (CRC) development. However, it remains unclear whether being breastfed in infancy is associated with CRC risk in adult life, particularly early adulthood. METHODS: We prospectively investigated the association between history of being breastfed and risk of CRC and its precursor lesions among 66,634 women 46-93 years of age from the Nurses' Health Study and 92,062 women 27-68 years of age from the Nurses' Health Study II. Cox regression and logistic regression for clustered data were used to estimate hazard ratios for CRC and odds ratios for CRC precursors, respectively. RESULTS: During 3.5 million person-years of follow-up, we identified 1490 incident cases of CRC in 2 cohorts. Having been breastfed was associated with a 23% (95% confidence interval [CI], 10% to 38%) increased risk of CRC. The risk of CRC increased with duration of being breastfed (Ptrend < .001). These findings were validated using breastfeeding information from the mothers of a subset of participants. Among younger participants from the Nurses' Health Study II, a significant association was observed between being breastfed and increased risk of high-risk adenomas under 50 years of age (odds ratio, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.16 to 1.83). Consistently, having been breastfed was associated with increased risk of CRC among participants ≤55 years of age (hazard ratio, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.80). CONCLUSIONS: Being breastfed in infancy was associated with increased risk of CRC in adulthood, including among younger adults. However, further research is needed to understand the underlying biological mechanisms, as this association does not establish causation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Existing research has established the pepsinogen ratio (PGR) as a complex biomarker, not only as an independent predictor for various gastrointestinal diseases but also in its association with atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. However, the precise mechanism linking changes in PGR to cardiovascular pathologies remains unclear. The objective of this study is to quantitatively elucidate the association between PGR and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) as an indicator of atherosclerotic progression. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study that analyzed clinical data from 465 patients who underwent health screenings. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) identified potential risk factors affecting baPWV. Multiple logistic regression was employed to evaluate if PGR serves as an independent risk factor for elevated baPWV after accounting for these variables. Generalized additive models and smoothed curve fitting were utilized to investigate the possibility of a nonlinear association between PGR and baPWV. When such nonlinearity was found, threshold effect analysis pinpointed the inflection point in this relationship, followed by segmented correlation analyses. RESULTS: PGR negatively correlated with both right baPWV (RbaPWV) and left baPWV (LbaPWV) after adjusting for confounders. Smoothed curve analyses revealed nonlinear relationships, with inflection points at 22.5 for RbaPWV and 22.3 for LbaPWV. For PGR values below 22.5, a significant negative correlation with RbaPWV was observed (ß = - 6.3 cm/s, P < 0.001). Conversely, for PGR values above 22.5, no significant linear relationship was found (P = 0.141). Similarly, when PGR was below 22.3, a strong negative correlation with LbaPWV was detected (ß = - 7.0 cm/s, P < 0.001), but such correlation was absent for higher PGR levels (P = 0.273). CONCLUSION: The study reveals that PGR is associated with RbaPWV and LbaPWV in a nonlinear manner. Specifically, lower levels of PGR were linearly and inversely correlated with baPWV, but this relationship became nonlinear at higher PGR levels. These findings suggest that modulating PGR levels may offer a therapeutic strategy for managing atherosclerosis.

RESUMEN

There is a growing demand for the identification of alternative sources of collagen not derived from land-dwelling animals. The present study explored the use of pepsin- and acid-based extraction protocols to isolate collagen from the swim bladders of Megalonibea fusca. After extraction, these acid-soluble collagen (ASC) and pepsin-soluble collagen (PSC) samples respectively were subjected to spectral analyses and sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) characterization, revealing both to be comprised of type I collagen with a triple-helical structure. The imino acid content of these ASC and PSC samples was 195 and 199 residues per 1000 residues, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that samples of freeze-dried collagen exhibited a compact lamellar structure, while transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy confirmed the ability of these collagens to undergo self-assembly into fibers. ASC samples exhibited a larger fiber diameter than the PSC samples. The solubility of both ASC and PSC was highest under acidic pH conditions. Neither ASC nor PSC caused any cytotoxicity when tested in vitro, which met one of the requirements for the biological evaluation of medical devices. Thus, collagen isolated from the swim bladders of Megalonibea fusca holds great promise as a potential alternative to mammalian collagen.

RESUMEN

Artemisia argyi essence liquid (AL) is an aqueous solution extracted from A. argyi using CO2 supercritical fluid extraction. There have been few investigations on the aqueous solution of A. argyi extracted via CO2 supercritical fluid extraction. This study aimed to explore the moisturizing and antioxidant effects of AL and to clarify the potential mechanism underlying those effects. Expression levels of skin moisture-related components and the H2O2-induced oxidative stress responses in human keratinocyte cells were measured via quantitative RT-qPCR, Western blot, and immunofluorescence. Our results showed that AL enhanced the expression of AQP3 and HAS2 by activating the EGFR-mediated STAT3 and MAPK signaling pathways. In addition, AL can play an antioxidant role by inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway and activating the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway, consequently increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes (GPX1, SOD2) and decreasing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study revealed that AL could be used as a potential moisturizing and antioxidant cosmetic ingredient.

RESUMEN

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the dominant pollutants in industrial parks. However, they are not generally considered as part of the air quality index (AQI) system, which leads to a biased assessment of pollution in industrial parks. In this study, a supplementary assessment system of AQI-V was established by analyzing VOCs characteristics with vehicle-mounted PTR-TOFMS instrument, correlation analysis and the standards analysis. Three hourly and daily scenarios were considered, and the hierarchical parameter setting was further optimized by field application. The hourly and daily assessments revealed the evaluation factors for the discriminability of different air quality levels, practiced value for regional air quality improvement, and the reservation of general dominant pollutants. Finally, the universality testing in ZPIP successfully recognized most of the peaks, with 54.76%, 38.39% and 6.85% for O3, VOCs and NO2 as the dominant pollutant, and reflected the daily ambient air quality condition, together with the dominant pollutant. The AQI-V system with VOCs sub-index is essential for air quality evaluation in industrial parks, which can further provide scientific support to control the pollution of VOCs and the secondary pollutant, therefore significantly improve the air quality in local industrial parks.

RESUMEN

Angiogenesis potentially underlies the pathway between excess adiposity and prostate carcinogenesis. This study examined the association between lifetime body shape trajectories and prostate cancer angiogenesis. 521 prostate cancer patients who underwent prostatectomy or transurethral resection between 1986 and 2000 were enrolled from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Cancers were immunostained and quantitated for cancer vessel regularity, diameter, area, and density, and composite angiogenesis (factor analysis). To identify distinct groups of body shape change, we conducted group-based trajectory modeling. We used multivariable linear regression to estimate the percentage difference in angiogenesis score and 95% confidence interval (CI) between body shape change trajectories during lifetime (age 5-60 years), early life (age 5-30 years), or later life (age 30-60 years). Compared to men with lifetime lean or medium body shape, higher angiogenesis scores were observed in men with moderate increase [percentage difference of 35% (95% CI 5-64)], marked increase [24% (95% CI - 2 to 51)], and constantly heavy with mild increase body shape [38% (95% CI 8-69)]. However, a lower angiogenesis score was noted in men with early-life marked increase (- 22%, 95% CI - 44 to 0) and stable medium body shape (- 14%, 95% CI - 40 to 12), compared to moderate increase body shape. Increased angiogenesis was also found for absolute weight gain from age 21-60 years. Lifetime body fatness accumulation, especially after age 21, was associated with increased prostate cancer angiogenesis, while weight gain in early-life adulthood was associated with lower cancer angiogenesis.

RESUMEN

Volatile organic compound (VOC) emission control and source apportionment in small-scale industrial areas have become key topics of air pollution control in China. This study proposed a novel characteristic factor and pattern recognition (CF-PR) model for VOC source apportionment based on the similarity of characteristic factors between sources and receptors. A simulation was carried out in a typical industrial area with the CF-PR model involving simulated receptor samples. Refined and accurate source profiles were constructed through in situ sampling and analysis, covering rubber, chemicals, coating, electronics, plastics, printing, incubation and medical treatment industries. Characteristic factors of n-undecane, styrene, o-xylene and propane were identified. The source apportionment simulation results indicated that the predicted contribution rate was basically consistent with the real contribution rate. Compared to traditional receptor models, this method achieves notable advantages in terms of refinement and timeliness at similar accuracy, which is more suitable for VOC source identification and apportionment in small-scale industrial areas.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) carries a poor prognosis, but earlier tumor detection would improve survival. We aimed to develop and externally validate a risk prediction model based on exposure to readily available risk factors to identify high-risk individuals of ESCC. METHODS: Competing risk regression modeling was used to develop a risk prediction model. Individuals' absolute risk of ESCC during follow-up was computed with the cumulative incidence function. We used prospectively collected data from the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) for model derivation and the UK Biobank cohort for validation. Candidate predictors were age, sex, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index (BMI), education, cohabitation, physical exercise, and employment. Model performance was validated internally and externally by evaluating model discrimination using the area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) and model calibration. RESULTS: The developed risk prediction model included age, sex, smoking, alcohol, and BMI. The AUC for 5-year risk of ESCC was 0.76 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.58-0.93) in the derivation cohort and 0.70 (95% CI, 0.64-0.75) in the validation cohort. The calibration showed close agreement between the predicted cumulative risk and observed probabilities of developing ESCC. Higher net benefit was observed when applying the risk prediction model than considering all participants as being at high risk, indicating good clinical usefulness. A web tool for risk calculation was developed: https://sites.google.com/view/escc-ugis-ki. DISCUSSION: This ESCC risk prediction model showed good discrimination and calibration and validated well in an independent cohort. This readily available model can help select high-risk individuals for preventive interventions.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Esophageal cancer is a highly fatal malignant neoplasm, with 2 etiologically different histological types. A large prospective study is expected to elucidate the specific risk of the 90% subtype of esophageal cancer, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), with metformin therapy. This study aims to determine the association between metformin use and incident ESCC risk. METHODS: This was a nationwide population-based prospective cohort study conducted in Sweden in 2005-2015. Among 8.4 million participants identified in the cohort, 411,603 (5%) were metformin users. The users were compared with 10 times as many frequency-matched nonusers of metformin (n = 4,116,030) by age and sex. Metformin use was treated as a time-varying variate, and multivariable cause-specific proportional hazards model was used to calculate hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for ESCC, adjusted for age, sex, calendar year, residence area, tobacco smoking, alcohol overconsumption, and use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or statins. RESULTS: The incidence rates of ESCC were 3.5 per 100,000 person-years among the metformin users and 5.3 per 100,000 person-years in the nonusers. Metformin users overall were at a decreased risk of ESCC compared with nonusers (HR 0.68, 95% CI 0.54-0.85). The decrease in risk was more pronounced in new metformin users (HR 0.44, 95% CI 0.28-0.64) and participants aged 60-69 years (HR 0.45, 95% CI 0.31-0.66). DISCUSSION: Metformin use decreases the risk of developing ESCC.

RESUMEN

To achieve low regeneration energy consumption and viscosity, a novel amino-functionalized ionic liquid [TEPAH][2-MI] combined with organic solvents has been proposed for CO2 capture in this work. The results demonstrated that the absorption loading of [TEPAH][2-MI]/N-propanol (NPA)/ethylene glycol (EG) was 1.72 mol·mol-1 (28 wt %, 257 g·L-1), which was much higher than that of monoethanolamine/water, and the regeneration efficiency was maintained at 90.7% after the fifth regeneration cycle. The viscosities of the solution were only 3.66 and 7.65 mPa·s before and after absorption, respectively, which were significantly lower than those of traditional nonaqueous absorbents. The reaction mechanism investigated via 13C NMR and quantum calculations summarized that CO2 first reacted with the amino group of [TEPAH]+ to form the carbamates through the zwitterion formation and protonation process, while CO2 reacted with the N atom of [2-MI]- to directly form the carbamate. Then, some of them further reacted with NPA and EG to form the carbonates. Moreover, Nπ and Nτ tautomers of [TEPAH][2-MI] could convert into each other continuously when CO2 was absorbed. During CO2 desorption, the carbamates and carbonates reacted with AFILH+ to decompose and released CO2 directly.

RESUMEN

The source apportionment of PM2.5 is essential for pollution prevention. In view of the weaknesses of individual models, we proposed an integrated chemical mass balance-source emission inventory (CMB-SEI) model to acquire more accurate results. First, the SEI of secondary component precursors (SO2, NOx, NH3, and VOCs) was compiled to acquire the emission ratios of these sources for the precursors. Then, a regular CMB simulation was executed to obtain the contributions of primary particle sources and secondary components (SO42-, NO3-, NH4+, and SOC). Afterwards, the contributions of secondary components were apportioned into primary sources according to the source emission ratios. The final source apportionment results combined the contributions of primary sources by CMB and SEI. This integrated approach was carried out via a case study of three coastal cities (Zhoushan, Taizhou, and Wenzhou; abbreviated WZ, TZ, and ZS) in Zhejiang Province, China. The regular CMB simulation results showed that PM2.5 pollution was mainly affected by secondary components and mobile sources. The SEI results indicated that electricity, industrial production and mobile sources were the largest contributors to the emission of PM2.5 gaseous precursors. The simulation results of the CMB-SEI model showed that PM2.5 pollution in the coastal areas of Zhejiang Province presented complex pollution characteristics dominated by mobile sources, electricity production sources and industrial production sources. Compared to the results of the CMB and SEI models alone, the CMB-SEI model completely apportioned PM2.5 to primary sources and simultaneously made the results more accurate and reliable in accordance with local industrial characteristics.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aimed to develop a prediction model for identifying individuals at high absolute risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) for endoscopic screening at a curable stage based on readily identifiable risk factors. METHODS: This was a nationwide Swedish population-based, case-control study, including 167 new cases of ESCC and 820 randomly selected control participants. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were assessed by using multivariable unconditional logistic regression. The discriminative accuracy of the model was assessed by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) with leave-1-out cross validation. Models for projecting individuals' absolute 5-year risk of ESCC were developed by incorporating the age-specific and sex-specific incidence rates and competing risk of death from other causes. RESULTS: A model including the risk factors age, sex, tobacco smoking, alcohol overconsumption, education, duration of living with a partner, and place of residence during childhood generated an AUC of 0.81 (95% CI, 0.77-0.84). A model based only on age, sex, tobacco smoking, and alcohol overconsumption obtained a similar AUC (0.79; 95% CI, 0.75-0.82). A 5-year follow-up of 355 men aged 70 to 74 years with over 35 years' smoking and alcohol overconsumption history is needed to detect 1 ESCC case. The estimated individuals' absolute 5-year risk of ESCC varied according to the combinations of risk factors. CONCLUSION: This easy-to-use risk prediction model showed a good discriminative accuracy and had the potential to identify individuals at high absolute risk of ESCC who might benefit from tailored endoscopic screening and surveillance.

RESUMEN

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as pivotal regulators in human cancer. LINC01082 was expressed as decreased in colon cancer by previous lncRNA-seq result and TCGA database, however, the role and function of LINC0182 is not clear in colon cancer. Here, we aimed to explore the role of LINC01082 in colon cancer for exploring the etiopathogenesis of colon cancer. RT-qPCR for LINC01082 expression in tissues (colon cancer vs. their matched adjacent non-cancerous tissues, ANT, n = 39) and cells (colon cancer cells vs. normal colon cells, n = 4) were performed. CCK-8 assay for proliferation of colon cancer, Transwell assay for migration and invasion were carried out in sw480 and sw620 cells. The results revealed that LINC01082 was significantly decreased in tissues and cell lines of colon cancer. Overexpressed LINC01082 significantly suppressed the proliferation ability of colon cancer cells. The migration and invasion of colon cancer cells were also suppressed after LINC01082 overexpression. These findings demonstrated that LINC01082 may act in suppressing the incidence and development of colon cancer via suppressing cell proliferation, migration and invasion, indicating that LINC01082 may act as a new tumor suppressor and may be a promising therapy target for colon cancer.
