RESUMEN

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The brainstem's complex anatomy and relatively small size means that structural and functional assessment of this structure is done less frequently compared to other brain areas. However, recent years have seen substantial progress in brainstem imaging, enabling more detailed investigations into its structure and function, as well as its role in neuropathology. RECENT FINDINGS: Advancements in ultrahigh field MRI technology have allowed for unprecedented spatial resolution in brainstem imaging, facilitating the new creation of detailed brainstem-specific atlases. Methodological improvements have significantly enhanced the accuracy of physiological (cardiac and respiratory) noise correction within brainstem imaging studies. These technological and methodological advancements have allowed for in-depth analyses of the brainstem's anatomy, including quantitative assessments and examinations of structural connectivity within both gray and white matter. Furthermore, functional studies, including assessments of activation patterns and functional connectivity, have revealed the brainstem's roles in both specialized functions and broader neural integration. Notably, these investigations have identified alterations in brainstem structure and function associated with various neurological disorders. SUMMARY: The aforementioned developments have allowed for a greater appreciation of the importance of the brainstem in the wider context of neuroscience and clinical neurology.

Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH) enables high-resolution 3D imaging of objects from several 2D holograms under incoherent light and has many attractive applications in motionless 3D fluorescence imaging. However, FINCH has difficulty implementing 3D imaging of dynamic scenes since multiple phase-shifting holograms need to be recorded for removing the bias term and twin image in the reconstructed scene, which requires the object to remain static during this progress. Here, we propose a dual-channel Fresnel noncoherent compressive holography method. First, a pair of holograms with π phase shifts obtained in a single shot are used for removing the bias term noise. Then, a physic-driven compressive sensing (CS) algorithm is used to achieve twin-image-free reconstruction. In addition, we analyze the reconstruction effect and suitability of the CS algorithm and two-step phase-shift filtering algorithm for objects with different complexities. The experimental results show that the proposed method can record hologram videos of 3D dynamic objects and scenes without sacrificing the imaging field of view or resolution. Moreover, the system refocuses images at arbitrary depth positions via computation, hence providing a new method for fast high-throughput incoherent 3D imaging.

Phase-shifting interferometry (PSI) requires accurate phase shifts between interferograms for realizing high-accuracy phase retrieval. This paper presents an adaptive PSI through synchronously capturing phase shifts measurement interferograms and phase measurement interferograms, in which the former is a series of spatial carrier frequency phase-shifting interferograms generated by an additional assembly and the phase shifts are calculated with the single-spectrum phase shifts measurement algorithm (SS-PSMA), the latter is employed for phase retrieval with an adaptive phase-shifting digital holography algorithm (PSDHA) based on complex amplitude recovery. In addition to exhibiting excellent reliability, high-accuracy phase retrieval (0.02 rad), and short calculation time (<25 ms), the proposed adaptive PSDHA is suitable for various interferograms with different fringe shapes and numbers. Importantly, both simulation analysis and experimental result demonstrate that this adaptive PSI based on PSDHA can effectively eliminate phase-shifting errors caused by phase shifter and external disturbance, ensuring high-accuracy phase shifts measurement and phase retrieval, meanwhile significantly reducing phase-shifting interferograms acquisition time and phase retrieval calculation time.

BACKGROUND: The association between remnant cholesterol (RC) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains unclear. Morphological changes in retinal vessels have been reported to predict vascular complications of diabetes, including DR. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 6535 individuals with T2DM. The RC value was calculated using the recognized formula. The retinal vascular parameters were measured using fundus photography. The independent relationship between RC and DR was analyzed using binary logistic regression models. Multiple linear regression and subgroup analyses were employed to investigate the link between RC and vascular parameters, including the retinal arteriolar diameter (CRAE), venular diameter (CRVE), and fractal dimension (Df). Mediation analysis was performed to assess whether the vascular morphology could explain the association between RC and DR. RESULTS: RC was independently associated with DR in patients with a longer duration of T2DM (> 7 years). Patients with the highest quartile RC levels had larger CRAE (5.559 [4.093, 7.025] µm), CRVE (7.620 [5.298, 9.941] µm) and Df (0.013 [0.009, 0.017]) compared with patients with the lowest quartile RC levels. Results were robust across different subgroups. The association between RC and DR was mediated by CRVE (0.020 ± 0.005; 95% confidence interval: 0.012-0.032). CONCLUSIONS: RC may be a risk factor for DR among those who have had T2DM for a longer period of time. Higher RC levels were correlated with wider retinal arterioles and venules as well as higher Df, and it may contribute to DR through the dilation of retinal venules.

Trichomes are epidermal outgrowths on plant shoots. Their roles in protecting plants against herbivores and in the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites have long been recognized. Recently, studies are increasingly showing that trichomes also play important roles in water absorption and metal detoxication, with these roles having important implications for ecology, the environment, and agriculture. However, these two functions of trichomes have been largely overlooked and much remains unknown. In this review, we show that the trichomes of 37 plant species belonging to 14 plant families are involved in water absorption, while the trichomes of 33 species from 13 families are capable of sequestering metals within their trichomes. The ability of trichomes to absorb water results from their decreased hydrophobicity compared to the remainder of the leaf surface as well as the presence of special structures for collecting and absorbing water. In contrast, the metal detoxication function of trichomes results not only from the good connection of their basal cells to the underlying vascular tissues, but also from the presence of metal-chelating ligands and transporters within the trichomes themselves. Knowledge gaps and critical future research questions regarding these two trichome functions are highlighted. This review improves our understanding on trichomes.

Learning-based phase imaging balances high fidelity and speed. However, supervised training requires unmistakable and large-scale datasets, which are often hard or impossible to obtain. Here, we propose an architecture for real-time phase imaging based on physics-enhanced network and equivariance (PEPI). The measurement consistency and equivariant consistency of physical diffraction images are used to optimize the network parameters and invert the process from a single diffraction pattern. In addition, we propose a regularization method based total variation kernel (TV-K) function constraint to output more texture details and high-frequency information. The results show that PEPI can produce the object phase quickly and accurately, and the proposed learning strategy performs closely to the fully supervised method in the evaluation function. Moreover, the PEPI solution can handle high-frequency details better than the fully supervised method. The reconstruction results validate the robustness and generalization ability of the proposed method. Specially, our results show that PEPI leads to considerable performance improvement on the imaging inverse problem, thereby paving the way for high-precision unsupervised phase imaging.

N-glycosylation, one of the main protein posttranslational modifications (PTMs), plays an important role in the pathogenic process of pathogens through binding and invasion of host cells or regulating the internal environment of host cells to benefit their survival. However, N-glycosylation has remained mostly unexplored in Spiroplasma eriocheiris, a novel type of pathogen which has serious adverse effects on aquaculture. In most cases, N-glycoproteins can be detected and analyzed by lectins dependent on sugar recognition domains. In this study, three Macrobrachium nipponense C-type lectins, namely, MnCTLDcp1, MnCTLDcp2 and MnCTLDcp3, were used to screen S. eriocheiris glycosylated proteins. First, qRT-PCR results showed that the expression levels of the three kinds of lectins were all significantly up-regulated in prawn hearts when the host was against S. eriocheiris infection. A bacterial binding assay showed that purified recombinant MnCTLDcp1, MnCTLDcp2 and MnCTLDcp3 could directly bind to S. eriocheiris in vitro. Second, three S. eriocheiris glycosylated proteins, ATP synthase subunit beta (ATP beta), molecular chaperone Dnak (Dnak) and fructose bisphosphate aldolase (FBPA), were screened and identified using the three kinds of full-length C-type lectins. Far-Western blot and coimmunoprecipitation (CO-IP) further demonstrated that there were interactions between the three lectins with ATP beta, Dnak and FBPA. Furthermore, antibody neutralization assay results showed that pretreatment of S. eriocheiris with ATP beta, Dnak and FBPA antibodies could significantly block this pathogen infection. All the above studies showed that the glycosylated protein played a vital role in the process of S. eriocheiris infection.

A capacitance-to-voltage converter (CVC) is proposed in this paper and applied to a readout circuit for a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) accelerometer to improve the power efficiency. In a traditional readout circuit, the front-end CVC has to operate at a high sampling frequency to resist thermal noise deterioration due to the large parasitic capacitance introduced by the mechanical sensing element. Thus, the back-end analog-to-digital converter (ADC) also has to operate at a high sampling frequency to avoid noise aliasing when sampling the output signal of the CVC, which leads to high power consumption. The average CVC technique is proposed in this paper to reduce the sampling frequency requirement of the back-end ADC and thus reduce the power consumption. Both the traditional readout circuit and the proposed readout circuit are simulated with a commercial 0.18 µm BCD process. The simulation results show that noise aliasing occurs, and the noise power spectral density (PSD) of the traditional readout circuit increases by 12 dB when the sampling frequency of back-end ADC is reduced by 24 dB. However, in the proposed readout circuit, a noise aliasing effect does not occur. Moreover, the proposed readout circuit reduces the power consumption by 53% without thermal noise deterioration. In addition, the proposed CVC circuits are fabricated in an 0.18 µm BCD process, and the test results show that the presented readout circuit based on the average CVC technique can obtain better performance than the traditional CVC-based readout circuit.

Streptomyces pactum (Act12) can both promote plant growth and strengthen heavy metal mobilization. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of how Act12 works during the phytoextraction process are still unknown. The present work investigated whether the metabolites produced by Act12 could influence the seed germination and the growth of potherb mustard and explored its mobilizing effect on soil cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn). The results showed that the germination potential and rate of potherb mustard seed treated with Act12 fermentation broth were 1.0- and 0.32-folds higher than those of control, probably due to the interruption of seed dormant stage. We also found that Act12 inoculation not only promoted the dry biomass (6.82%) of potherb mustard, but also increased the leaf chlorophyll (11.8%) and soluble protein (0.35%) production. The boosted seed germination rate under Act12 treatment (up to 63.3%) indicated that Act12 enhanced the resistance of potherb mustard seeds to Cd and Zn and alleviated their physiological toxicity. The generated metabolites during the Act12 fermentation posed positive impact on the availability of soil Cd and Zn. These findings bring new insight into the Act12-assisted phytoextraction of Cd and Zn from contaminated soils.

The ultimate purpose of phytoextraction is not only to remove heavy metals from soil but also to improve soil quality. Here, we evaluated how the joint effect of Streptomyces pactum (strain Act12) and inorganic (Hoagland's solution) and organic (humic acid and peat) nutrients affected the phytoextraction practice of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) by potherb mustard, and the microbial community composition within rhizosphere was also investigated. The results indicated that the nutrients exerted synergistically with Act12, all increasing the plant biomass and Cd/Zn uptakes. The inoculation of Act12 alone significantly increased dehydrogenase activity of rhizosphere soil (P < 0.05), while urease and alkaline phosphatase activities varied in different dosage of Act12. Combined application of microbial strain with nutrients increased enzymatic activities with the elevated dosage of Act12. 16S ribosomal RNA high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that Act12 inoculation reduced the diversity of rhizosphere bacteria. The Act12 and nutrients did not change dominant phyla i.e., Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Gemmatimonadetes, Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria, but their relative abundance differed among the treatments with: Peat > Act12 > Humic acid > Hoagland's solution. Comparatively, Sphingomonas replaced Thiobacillus as dominant genus after Act12 application. The increase in the Sphingomonas and Flavisolibacter abundances under Act12 and nutrients treatments gave rise to growth-promoting effect on plant. Our results revealed the important role for rhizosphere microbiota in mediating soil biochemical traits and plant growth, and our approach charted a path toward the development of Act12 combined with soil nutrients to enhance soil quality and phytoextraction efficiency in Cd/Zn-contaminated soils.

Magneto-acoustic-electric tomography (MAET) boasts high resolution in ultrasound imaging and high contrast in electrical impedance imaging, making it of significant research value in the fields of early tumor diagnosis and bioelectrical monitoring. In this study, a method was proposed that combined high conductivity liquid metal and maximum length sequence (M sequence) coded excitation to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. It was shown that, under rotational scanning, the liquid metal significantly improved the signal-to-noise ratio of the inter-tissue magneto-acoustic-electric signal and enhanced the quality of the reconstructed image. The signal-to-noise ratio of the signal was increased by 5.6, 11.1, 21.7, and 45.7 times under the excitation of 7-, 15-, 31-, and 63-bit M sequence code, respectively. The total usage time of 31-bit M sequence coded excitation imaging was shortened by 75.6% compared with single-pulse excitation when the same signal-to-noise ratio was improved. In conclusion, the imaging method combining liquid metal and M-sequence coding excitation has positive significance for improving MAET image quality.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of rigidity in Parkinson's disease (PD) is poorly understood. Multi-sequence functional and structural brain MRI may further clarify the origin of this clinical characteristic. PURPOSE: To examine both joint and unique relationships of MRI-based functional and structural imaging modalities to rigidity and other clinical features of PD. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective cross-sectional study. POPULATION: 31 PD subjects (aged 68.0 ± 5.9 years, 21 males) with average disease duration 9.3 ± 5.4 years. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: Multi-echo GRASE, diffusion-weighted echo planar imaging (EPI), and blood oxygen level dependent contrast EPI T2*-weighted sequences on a 3T scanner. ASSESSMENT: Myelin water fraction (MWF) and fractional anisotropy (FA) of 20 white-matter regions of interest (ROIs), and functional connectivity derived from resting-state fMRI among 56 ROIs were assessed. The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale-Part III, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Beck Depression Index, and Apathy Rating Scales were used to assess motor and non-motor symptoms. STATISTICAL TESTS: Multiset canonical correlation analysis (MCCA) and canonical correlation analysis (CCA) were utilized to examine the joint and unique relationships of multiple imaging measures with clinical symptoms of PD. A permutation test was used to determine statistical significance (P < 0.05). RESULTS: MCCA revealed a single significant component jointly linking MWF, FA, and functional connectivity to age, bradykinesia, and leg agility, non-motor symptoms of cognition, depression, and apathy, but not rigidity (P = 0.77), tremor (P = 0.50 and 0.67 on the left and right side), or sex (P = 0.54). After controlling for this joint component, CCA found a unique significant association between MWF and rigidity, but no other associations were detected, including with FA (P = 0.87). DATA CONCLUSION: MWF, FA, and functional connectivity can serve as multi-sequence imaging markers to characterize many PD symptoms. However, rigidity in PD is additionally associated with widespread myelin changes. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 4 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 3.

High-performance organic semiconductor materials as the electroactive components of optoelectronic devices have attracted much attention and made them ideal candidates for solution-processable, large-area, and low-cost flexible electronics. Especially, organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on conjugated semiconductor materials have experienced stunning progress in device performance. To make these materials economically viable, comprehensive knowledge of charge transport mechanisms is required. The alignment of organic conjugated molecules in the active layer is vital to charge transport properties of devices. The present review highlights the recent progress of processing-structure-transport correlations that allow the precise and uniform alignment of organic conjugated molecules over large areas for multiple electronic applications, including OFETs, organic thermoelectric devices (OTEs), and organic phototransistors (OPTs). Different strategies for regulating crystallinity and macroscopic orientation of conjugated molecules are introduced to correlate the molecular packing, the device performance, and charge transport anisotropy in multiple organic electronic devices.

The existence of antibiotics in the environment can trigger a number of issues by fostering the widespread development of antimicrobial resistance. Currently, the most popular techniques for removing antibiotic pollutants from water include physical adsorption, flocculation, and chemical oxidation, however, these processes usually leave a significant quantity of chemical reagents and polymer electrolytes in the water, which can lead to difficulty post-treating unmanageable deposits. Furthermore, though cost-effectiveness, efficiency, reaction conditions, and nontoxicity during the degradation of antibiotics are hurdles to overcome, a variety of photocatalysts can be used to degrade pollutant residuals, allowing for a number of potential solutions to these issues. Thus, the urgent need for effective and rapid processes for photocatalytic degradation leads to an increased interest in finding more sustainable catalysts for antibiotic degradation. In this review, we provide an overview of the removal of pharmaceutical antibiotics through photocatalysis, and detail recent progress using different nanostructure-based photocatalysts. We also review the possible sources of antibiotic pollutants released through the ecological chain and the consequences and damages caused by antibiotics in wastewater on the environment and human health. The fundamental dynamic processes of nanomaterials and the degradation mechanisms of antibiotics are then discussed, and recent studies regarding different photocatalytic materials for the degradation of some typical and commonly used antibiotics are comprehensively summarized. Finally, major challenges and future opportunities for the photocatalytic degradation of commonly used antibiotics are highlighted.

Crude oil contamination severely deteriorates soils quality. Bioremediation utilizing soil indigenous organisms could be employed to decompose petroleum hydrocarbons thanks to its low cost and minor environmental disturbance. However, slow kinetics limit the successful application of this biotechnique. Pretreating oil-contaminated soils with Fenton pre-oxidation could accelerate the subsequent bioremediation process. This study was to explore the mechanisms behind the rapid propagation of indigenous petroleum-degrading bacteria (IPDB) and the efficient degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in soil after Fenton pre-oxidation with biostimulated iron. Biostimulated iron and non-biostimulated iron were used in the experiments, where Fenton pre-oxidation was combined with the bioremediation of oil-contaminated soil (TPH = 13221 mg/kg). Although the amount of Fenton pre-oxidized TPH (3331-3775 mg/kg) was similar with biostimulated and non-biostimulated irons, the biodegradation of TPH after Fenton pre-oxidation with biostimulated iron (5840 mg/kg) was much higher than that with non-biostimulated iron (3034-4034 mg/kg). Moreover, abundant nutrients and a high population of residual IPDB were found after Fenton pre-oxidation with biostimulated iron, which benefited stable consumption of NH3-N and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by IPDB during the subsequent bioremediation. However, Fenton pre-oxidation with non-biostimulated iron either resulted in greater damage to IPDB or produced fewer nutrients, thereby failing to ensure the continuous propagation of IPDB during the subsequent bioremediation. Therefore, we propose that Fenton pre-oxidation with biostimulated iron should be applied to heavily oil-contaminated soils prior to bioremediation.

This study investigated the effects of dietary Flos populi extract (FPE) on the growth, antioxidation capability, innate immune response, and disease resistance in gibel carp. A total of 480 fish were fed with five different diets containing 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 g kg-1 FPE (designated as control, D0.5, D1.0, D1.5, or D2.0 groups) for 45 days. The fish were challenged with A. hydrophila after the feeding trial. Compared with the control, the feed efficiency (FE), weight gain (WG), final body weight (FBW), and specific growth rate (SGR) were significantly improved in groups D1.0 and D1.5. Dietary FPE significantly increased serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) activities, as well as glutathione (GSH) content. The contents of protein carbonyl (PCC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum decreased significantly. Additionally, FPE supplementation in diets resulted in significant improvement in serum lysozyme (LZM) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities, as well as immunoglobulin M (IgM) and complement 3 (C3) concentrations. The hepatic antioxidant enzymes (CAT and SOD) activities increased, whereas content of MDA decreased in fish treated with dietary FPE than those of control both pre- and post-challenged. After 12 h-challenge, an obvious downregulation of hepatic Kelch-like-ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1), splenic tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-8, IL-1ß, and toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) mRNA levels was observed in fish treated with dietary FPE, whereas hepatic Nrf2 transcription level was upregulated compared to the control. Furthermore, compared to group D0.5, higher relative percent survival (RPS) was observed in gibel carp fed dietary 1.0-2.0 g/kg FPE. Our results reveal that FPE supplemented diet has a stimulatory effect on antioxidant capacity and nonspecific immune response, along with improved growth performance and enhanced resistance against A. hydrophila infection in juvenile gibel carp.

Trichomes are potentially important for absorption of foliar fertilizers. A study has shown that the non-glandular trichromes (NGTs) of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) accumulated high concentrations of foliar-applied zinc (Zn); however, the mechanisms of Zn accumulation in the NGTs and the fate of this Zn are unclear. Here we investigated how foliar-applied Zn accumulates in the NGTs and the subsequent translocation of this Zn. Time-resolved synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence microscopy and transcriptional analyses were used to probe the movement of Zn in the NGTs, with the cuticle composition of the NGTs examined using confocal Raman microscopy. The accumulation of Zn in the NGTs is both an initial preferential absorption process and a subsequent translocation process. This preferred absorption is likely because the NGT base has a higher hydrophilicity, whilst the subsequent translocation is due to the presence of plasmodesmata, Zn-chelating ligands, and Zn transporters in the NGTs. Furthermore, the Zn sequestered in the NGTs was eventually translocated out of the trichome once the leaf Zn concentration had decreased, suggesting that the NGTs are also important in maintaining leaf Zn homeostasis. This study demonstrates for the first time that trichomes have a key structural and functional role in the absorption and translocation of foliar-applied Zn.

BACKGROUND: The gender pay gap in the United States (US) has narrowed over the last several decades, with the female/male earnings ratio in the US increased from about 60% before the 1980s to about 79% by 2014. However, the gender pay gap among the healthcare workforce persists. The objective of this study is to estimate the gender pay gap in the US federal governmental public health workforce during 2010-2018. METHODS: We used an administrative dataset including annual pay rates and job characteristics of employees of the US Department of Health and Human Services. Employees' gender was classified based on first names. Regression analyses were used to estimate the gender pay gap using the predicted gender. RESULTS: Female employees of the DHHS earned about 13% less than men in 2010, and 9.2% less in 2018. Occupation, pay plan, and location explained more than half of the gender pay gap. Controlling for job grade further reduces the gap. The unexplained portion of the gender pay gap in 2018 was between 1.0 and 3.5%. Female employees had a slight advantage in terms of pay increase over the study period. CONCLUSIONS: While the gender pay gap has narrowed within the last two decades, the pay gap between female and male employees in the federal governmental public health workforce persists and warrants continuing attention and research. Continued efforts should be implemented to reduce the gender pay gap among the health workforce.

In this paper, a blind back-propagation (BP) method for fiber nonlinearity compensation with low computational complexity and high performance is proposed. The BP method compensates the fiber chromatic dispersion step by step. Between two linear steps, the proposed method compensates the fiber nonlinearity with the nonlinear tap coefficients optimized by the nonlinear least square method (NLSM). Unlike the traditional BP method, the proposed method takes into account the SPM, the intra-channel XPM and the intra-channel FWM effects while it is purely blind and requires no prior information of the transmission link except the total accumulated chromatic dispersion, e.g., the BP step in the proposed algorithm can be set as an arbitrary value which has no connection to the physical span length. The computational complexity of the proposed method is much lower (less than 50%) than the conventional BP method with one step per span, because of the reduction of the total number of steps. Meanwhile, the method improves the nonlinearity compensation performance in comparison to the standard BP method with one step per span at the optimal input power while maintaining the same computational complexity.

A remarkable hallmark of cancer cells is the heterogeneous coexistence of overproduced intracellular glutathione (GSH) and a high level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) compared with those in normal cells, which have been frequently used as the stimuli to trigger drug release from the nanocarriers. Most of the stimuli-responsive delivery vehicles have been designed to respond to only one redox stimulus (e.g., GSH or ROS). Herein, we develop a GSH and ROS dual-responsive amphiphilic diblock copolymer prodrug (BCP) (GR-BCP) consisting of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)- and camptothecin (CPT)-conjugated poly(methacrylate) in the side chains via thioether bonds. In comparison, GSH or ROS single-responsive BCPs (G-BCPs or R-BCPs) were prepared, where CPT drugs were linked by disulfide or thioketal bonds, respectively. The three BCPs can form well-defined spherical micellar nanoparticles in an aqueous solution with a diameter of ∼50 nm. Compared with G-BCP and R-BCP, GR-BCP realized the highest cytotoxicity against HeLa cells with the half-inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 6.3 µM, which is much lower than 17.8 µM for G-BCP and 28.9 µM for R-BCP. Moreover, for in vivo antitumor performance, G-BCP, R-BCP, and GR-BCP showed similar efficiencies in blood circulation and tumor accumulation after intravenous injection. However, GR-BCP realized the most efficient tumor suppression with few side effects. Our findings demonstrate that intracellular GSH and ROS dual-responsive BCPs show a more efficient responsive drug release inside tumor cells for boosting the antitumor efficacy as compared with GSH or ROS single-responsive BCPs, which provides novel strategies for designing redox-responsive BCPs.
