Agricultural crops are exposed to various abiotic and biotic stresses that can constrain crop productivity. Focusing on a limited subset of key groups of organisms has the potential to facilitate the monitoring of the functions of human-managed ecosystems. Endophytic bacteria can enhance plant stress resistance and can help plants to cope with the negative impacts of stress factors through the induction of different mechanisms, influencing plant biochemistry and physiology. In this study, we characterise endophytic bacteria isolated from different plants based on their metabolic activity and ability to synthesise 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase (ACCD), the activity of hydrolytic exoenzymes, the total phenolic compounds (TPC) and iron-complexing compounds (ICC). Test GEN III MicroPlate indicated that the evaluated endophytes are highly metabolically active, and the best used substrates were amino acids, which may be important in selecting potential carrier components for bacteria in biopreparations. The ACCD activity of strain ES2 (Stenotrophomonas maltophilia) was the highest, whereas that of strain ZR5 (Delftia acidovorans) was the lowest. Overall, the obtained results indicated that ∼91.3% of the isolates were capable of producing at least one of the four hydrolytic enzymes. In addition, most of the tested strains produced ICC and TPC, which play a significant role in reducing stress in plants. The results of this study suggest that the tested endophytic bacterial strains can potentially be used to mitigate climate change-associated stresses in plants and to inhibit plant pathogens.

The microbial structure and metabolic function of plant-associated endophytes play a key role in the ecology of various environments, including trees. Here, the structure and functional profiles of the endophytic bacterial community, associated with Paulownia elongata × fortunei, in correlation with seasonality, were evaluated using Biolog EcoPlates. Biolog EcoPlates was used to analyse the functional diversity of the microbiome. The total communities of leaf endophyte communities were investigated using 16S rRNA V5-V7 region amplicon deep sequencing via Illumina MiSeq. Community level physiological profiling (CLPP) analysis by the Biolog EcoPlate™ assay revealed that the carboxylic acids (19.67-36.18%) and amino acids (23.95-35.66%) were preferred by all by all communities, whereas amines and amides (0.38-9.46%) were least used. Seasonal differences in substrate use were also found. Based on the sequencing data, mainly phyla Proteobacteria (18.4-97.1%) and Actinobacteria (2.29-78.7%) were identified. A core microbiome could be found in leaf-associated endophytic communities in trees growing in different locations. This work demonstrates the application of Biolog EcoPlates in studies of the functional diversity of microbial communities in a niche other than soil and shows how it can be applied to the functional analyses of endomicrobiomes. This research can contribute to the popularisation of Biolog EcoPlates for the functional analysis of the endomicrobiome. This study confirms that the analysis of the structure and function of the plant endophytic microbiome plays a key role in the health control and the development of management strategies on bioenergy tree plantations.

OBJECTIVES: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a progressive liver disease managed with corticosteroids and immunosuppression and monitored using a combination of liver biochemistry and histology. However, liver biopsy is invasive with risk of pain and bleeding. The aim of the present study was to investigate the utility of noninvasive imaging with multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (mpMRI) to provide clinically useful information on the presence and extent of hepatic inflammation, potentially guiding immunosuppression. METHODS: Eighty-one participants (aged 6-18), 21 healthy and 60 AIH patients, underwent multiparametric MRI to measure fibro-inflammation with iron-corrected T1 (cT1) at the Children's Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw alongside other clinical blood tests and liver biopsy at recruitment and after an average of 16-month follow-up (range 9-22 months). Correlation analyses were used to investigate the associations between cT1 with blood serum markers and histological scores. RESULTS: At recruitment, patients with AIH had a higher cT1 value than healthy controls (P < 0.01). cT1 correlated significantly with key histopathological features of disease. Treatment naïve AIH patients showed evidence of inflammation and heterogeneity across the liver compared to healthy controls.At follow-up, cT1 showed utility in monitoring disease regression as most patients showed significantly reduced fibro-inflammation with treatment (P < 0.0001) over the observational period. Six patients had histological fibrosis and clear fibro-inflammation on MR despite biochemical remission (normalized aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and immunoglobulin G [IgG]). CONCLUSIONS: Multiparametric MRI can measure disease burden in pediatric AIH and can show changes over time in response to therapy. Active disease can be seen even in biochemical remission in children.

Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), colorimetry, and bioassays were employed for the evaluation of the ability of endophytic bacterial strains to synthesize indole-related compounds (IRCs) and in particular indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). A total of 54 endophytic strains belonging to seven bacterial genera isolated from tissues of common and spelt wheat cultivars were studied. The endophytic bacteria isolated from different tissues of the tested wheat types were capable of IRCs production, including IAA, which constituted from 1.75% to 52.68% of all IRCs, in in vitro conditions via the tryptophan dependent pathway. The selected post-culture medium was also examined using a plant bioassay. Substantial growth of wheat coleoptile segments treated with the bacterial post-culture medium was observed in several cases. Our data suggest that the studied endophytic bacteria produce auxin-type compounds to support plant development. Summarizing, our approach to use three complementary methods for estimation of IRCs in different endophytic strains provides a comprehensive picture of their effect on wheat growth.

Endophytes are associated with host plants throughout their life history from seed germination to fruit development. One of the most important plant organs colonized by endophytic microbiota is the seed. The aim of this study was to determine the structure of the seed core microbiome inhabiting the endosperms and embryos of eight wheat cultivars with the use of a culture-independent technique. The seeds of Triticum aestivum L. cv. Hondia, Wilejka, STH, Opcja, Tybalt, Euforia and Triticum spelta L. cv. Rokosz and Schwabencorn (producer: Plant Breeding Strzelce Sp. z o.o. Group IHAR) were studied. Rokosz and Hondia were cultured in vitro and in vivo to identify obligatory bacterial endophytes. A restrictive analysis of reads originating from the in vitro plants has demonstrated that the bacterial genera Paenibacillus and Propionibacterium inhabiting Rokosz and Hondia plants have a status of obligatory microorganisms. Greater biodiversity of seed-borne endophytes was found in the seed endosperms than in the embryos. The multiple comparison analysis of the OTU abundance indicated that the seed part significantly influenced the relative abundance. The seed-born microbiome is not statistically significantly dependent on the wheat cultivars; however, it cannot be claimed that every wheat seed is the same.

The aim was to assess plant driven changes in the activity and diversity of microorganisms in the top layer of the zinc and lead smelter waste piles. The study sites comprised two types (flotation waste-FW and slag waste-SW) of smelter waste deposits in Piekary Slaskie, Poland. Cadmium, zinc, lead, and arsenic contents in these technosols were extremely high. The root zone of 8 spontaneous plant species (FW-Thymus serpyllum, Silene vulgaris, Solidago virgaurea, Echium vulgare, and Rumex acetosa; and SW-Verbascum thapsus; Solidago gigantea, Eupatorium cannabinum) and barren areas of each waste deposit were sampled. We observed a significant difference in microbial characteristics attributed to different plant species. The enzymatic activity was mostly driven by plant-microbial interactions and it was significantly greater in soil affected by plants than in bulk soil. Furthermore, as it was revealed by BIOLOG Ecoplate analysis, microorganisms inhabiting barren areas of the waste piles rely on significantly different sources of carbon than those found in the zone affected by spontaneous plants. Among phyla, Actinobacteriota were the most abundant, contributing to at least 25% of the total abundance. Bacteria belonging to Blastococcus genera were the most abundant with the substantial contribution of Nocardioides and Pseudonocardia, especially in the root zone. The contribution of unclassified bacteria was high-up to 38% of the total abundance. This demonstrates the unique character of bacterial communities in the smelter waste.

Background and objectives: Cancer coagulopathy is thought to be partially due to the up-regulation of tissue factor (TF), thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT) and soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance of TF, TAT and sP-selectin in patients with pancreatic cancer. Materials and methods: The study included 93 subjects: 73 newly diagnosed patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (42 with stage I-III and 31 with metastatic cancer (stage IV)) and a control group of 20 healthy subjects. Analyzed patients were hospitalized in the Department of Digestive Tract Diseases, Medical University of Lodz or in the Department of Digestive Tract Surgery, Silesian University, Katowice, Poland. All laboratory parameters were measured using ELISA procedures. Results: TF plasma levels were detectable in all patients and were significantly higher in metastatic cancer compared to stage I-III patients and the control group (p < 0.05). In patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma, the median levels of TAT were also elevated compared to the control group. Moreover, patients with metastases had significantly higher TAT concentration compared to the I-III cancer group. On the other hand, only the metastatic patients group showed significantly higher plasma sP-selectin levels compared to the controls (p = 0.009), whereas there was no difference between localized and metastatic cancer patients. Conclusions: The coagulation disorders are present in the majority of patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma already at the diagnosis stage and reflect cancer progression and spread.

Endophytic bacteria, as the most promising components of effective, biofertilizers biostimulating and biocontrol preparations, should be very intensively obtained from various plants and studied in terms of the conditions determining the potential ability to promote plant growth. For this reason, endophytic bacteria have been isolated from both stems and roots of up to six systematically distant species of vascular plants: one species belonging to the seedless vascular plants (Monilophyta), and five seed plants (Spermatophyta). The 23 isolated strains represented nine genera: Delftia, Stenotrophomonas, Rhizobium, Brevundimonas, Variovorax, Achromobacter, Novosphingobium, Comamonas and Collimonas, notably which were closely related-belonging to the phylum Proteobacteria. Stenotrophomonas sp. strains showed the greatest ability to synthesize indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)-like compounds, while Achromobacter sp. strains produced the highest levels of siderophores. The presence of the nifH gene and nitrogen binding activity was demonstrated for 95% of the strains tested. Stenotrophomonas maltophila (ES2 strain) showed the highest metabolic activity based on Biolog GEN III test. The ability to solubilize phosphate was determined only for three tested strains from genus: Delftia, Rhizobium and Novosphingobium. The presented work demonstrated that the metabolic and phenotypic properties of plant growth-promoting endophytes are correlated with the genus of bacteria and are not correlated with the host plant species or part of plant (stem, root).

BACKGROUND: Anti-liver kidney microsome (anti-LKM) autoantibodies are a distinguishing feature of type II autoimmune hepatitis (AIH-2). However, the levels of anti-LKM-1 in adult AIH-2 patients and their role in liver immunopathology remain equivocal. The aim of the study was to survey the autoantibody profile and the activity of liver disease in adult patients diagnosed with AIH-2 at childhood. METHODS: The autoantibody profile of adults was compared with the autoantibodies of the pediatric period. Liver function test, Immunoglobulin G (IgG), and gamma globulins were evaluated at the AIH presentation, at the age of 18 years, and at the current adult visit. RESULTS: All ten patients tested positive for LKM-1 at least once during the pediatric period. At the adult visit, four patients lost autoantibody positivity. LKM-1 was positive in four, liver cytosol antigen 1 (LC-1) in two, soluble liver antigen in one, and antinuclear antigen in one patient. Additionally three patients with LKM-1 and one patient without LKM-1 were positive for AMA-M2 (where AMA is antimitochondrial antibodies) Immunoglobulin M (IgM). Liver function markedly improved at 18 years and adult visit compared with initial diagnosis of AIH with only a mild decrease of IgG. The six adult patients positive for at least one autoantibody had statistically lower aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGTP) than the four patients autoantibody negative (AST: 52 vs. 88 IU/l, P < 0.05; GGTP 19 vs. 163 IU/l, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: LKM-1 positivity is not a stable condition in all patients with AIH-2. Patients who remained autoantibody positive had better liver function tests than those who lost their positivity. The presence of AMA-M2 autoantibodies suggest that development of AIH/Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) overlap syndrome should be considered.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Giant cell hepatitis (GCH) with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a rare, progressive disorder in infants and young children. The disease is aggressive and may lead to liver or multiorgan failure with fatal prognosis. Therapy with anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, rituximab (Rtx), proved effective. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate therapy for severe GCH with AIHA. METHODS: We report on 5 cases of severe GCH with AIHA treated in our department between 2006 and 2011. RESULTS: The median age of the children was 7 months (2-12 months), follow-up lasted 44 months (12-78 months), median (min-max), and the main observed symptoms were jaundice and hepatosplenomegaly. All of the children had positive direct Coombs test and biopsy-proven giant cell transformation of hepatocytes. Liver failure was observed in 3 children. First-line therapy (prednisone, azathioprine) proved ineffective in all but 1 of the patients, who initially responded to the treatment but relapsed after 4 months. The child subsequently developed hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and died 2 months after hemopoietic stem cell transplantation. Four remaining patients finally achieved complete remission after 4 to 6 doses of Rtx. CONCLUSIONS: We propose Rtx as the treatment of choice for severe GCH with AIHA in the early stages of the disease, provided steroids and azathioprine are ineffective.

Background: The incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) in elderly patients is constantly increasing. It results from the combination of an aging population with compounding prevalence of IBD, as well as the growing burden of elderly-onset IBD. The clinical characteristics of elderly patients differ from young subjects with IBD due to the multimorbidity or polypharmacy, affecting the choice of adequate therapeutic options. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical aspects and biological therapy safety in elderly Polish IBD patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study aimed at describing the demographic, clinical, and management characteristics of IBD patients treated with a biological therapy in two referral centers within the National Drug Program in Poland. Results: Out of the entire group of 366 studied patients, 51 (13.9%) were aged over 60-32 with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 19 with Crohn's disease (CD). The disease location was predominantly ileocolonic (57.89%) in patients with CD and pancolitis for patients with UC (56.25%). Most of the elderly IBD subjects were characterized by significant comorbidities, with Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) ≥ 1 in 66.67% patients. The probability of stopping biological therapy due to adverse events had the tendency to be higher in the CCI ≥ 1 group (20.58% vs. 5.88% in CCI = 0; p = 0.087). The main reasons for the therapy discontinuation included hypersensitivity reactions and liver enzyme abnormalities. Conclusions: In conclusion, our results underline the importance of assessing the comorbidity status instead of the age prior to initiating biological therapy, analyzing additional safety risks, and close monitoring in IBD patients with multiple comorbidities.

Background: Chronic liver disease diagnoses depend on liver biopsy histopathological assessment. However, due to the limitations associated with biopsy, there is growing interest in the use of quantitative digital pathology to support pathologists. We evaluated the performance of computational algorithms in the assessment of hepatic inflammation in an autoimmune hepatitis in which inflammation is a major component. Methods: Whole-slide digital image analysis was used to quantitatively characterize the area of tissue covered by inflammation [Inflammation Density (ID)] and number of inflammatory foci per unit area [Focal Density (FD)] on tissue obtained from 50 patients with autoimmune hepatitis undergoing routine liver biopsy. Correlations between digital pathology outputs and traditional categorical histology scores, biochemical, and imaging markers were assessed. The ability of ID and FD to stratify between low-moderate (both portal and lobular inflammation ≤1) and moderate-severe disease activity was estimated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: ID and FD scores increased significantly and linearly with both portal and lobular inflammation grading. Both ID and FD correlated moderately-to-strongly and significantly with histology (portal and lobular inflammation; 0.36≤R≤0.69) and biochemical markers (ALT, AST, GGT, IgG, and gamma globulins; 0.43≤R≤0.57). ID (AUC: 0.85) and FD (AUC: 0.79) had good performance for stratifying between low-moderate and moderate-severe inflammation. Conclusion: Quantitative assessment of liver biopsy using quantitative digital pathology metrics correlates well with traditional pathology scores and key biochemical markers. Whole-slide quantification of disease can support stratification and identification of patients with more advanced inflammatory disease activity.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of budesonide vs prednisone therapy both in combination with azathioprine in pediatric patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). STUDY DESIGN: Forty-six patients with AIH (11 males and 35 females) aged 9-17 years were enrolled in a 6-month, prospective, double-blind, randomized, active-controlled, multicenter phase IIb study evaluating budesonide (n = 19; 3 mg twice or 3 times daily) vs prednisone (n = 27; 40 mg/day tapered to 10 mg/day), both with azathioprine (1-2 mg/kg/day), followed by a further 6 months of open-label budesonide therapy. The primary efficacy endpoint was complete biochemical remission (normal serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels) without predefined steroid-specific side effects. RESULTS: We observed no statistically significant difference in the percentage of patients who met the primary endpoint between the budesonide (3 of 19; 16%) and prednisone groups (4 of 27; 15%) after 6 months, nor in the percentage of patients who experienced biochemical remission (budesonide, 6 of 19 [32%]; prednisone, 9 of 27 [33%]), lack of steroid-specific side effects (budesonide, 10 of 19 [53%]; prednisone, 10 of 27 [37%]). The mean weight gain was 1.2 ± 3.5 kg in the budesonide group and 5.1 ± 4.9 kg in the prednisone group (P = .006). A total of 42 patients received open-label budesonide treatment for another 6 months. After 12 months, 46% of these patients achieved complete remission. CONCLUSION: Oral budesonide with azathioprine can induce and maintain remission in pediatric patients with AIH and may be considered an alternative therapy to prednisone. The treatment causes fewer side effects and does not lead to weight gain; however, it may be less effective than prednisone in inducing remission.

RESUMEN

Anaemia is the most common extraintestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Due to its multifactorial etiopathogenesis, the differential diagnosis and treatment of anaemia in IBD is a significant clinical problem. The main aim of our study was to assess the usefulness of laboratory parameters, including hepcidin, in differential diagnoses of anaemia in hospitalized IBD patients. This study also estimated the impact of anaemia on the length of hospitalization and its relationship with clinical data of analyzed patients. The study included 118 adult patients diagnosed with IBD-55 with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 63 with Crohn's disease (CD). Anaemia was significantly more frequent in patients with CD-42 (66.7%)-compared to 31 (56.4%) patients with UC (p = 0.033). The prevalence of anaemia increased significantly with the severity of IBD and the extent of inflammatory changes in the endoscopic examination. Hospitalization time was significantly longer in patients with anaemia, especially in the group with UC. Ferritin concentrations < 30 ng/mL were found only in 15 (20.55%) IBD patients (9 with UC and 6 with CD), and ferritin < 100 ng/mL was observed in 22 (30.14%) patients, equally frequent with UC and CD (p > 0.05). Significantly higher concentrations of transferrin were observed in patients with anaemia in the course of UC compared to CD (2.58 ± 0.90 g/L vs. 2.15 ± 0.82 g/L; p = 0.037). On the other hand, saturation of transferrin < 16% was equally common in UC and CD patients. In our study, hepcidin levels in anaemic UC patients were significantly lower compared to UC without anaemia (p = 0.042), with no similar differences in CD independently of anaemia presence (p = 0.565). To conclude, we observed a high incidence of anaemia in patients with IBD and its significant impact on the length of hospitalization in UC. Routinely determined single laboratory parameters are not sufficient for the differential diagnosis of anaemia, and a complex laboratory assessment, including of hepcidin levels, is necessary for the full picture of anaemia in the course of IBD.

In recent years, a steady increase in the incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) has been observed with anemia as their most common extraintestinal symptom. Erythroferrone and Bone Morphogenetic Protein 6 (BMP-6) are recently identified cytokines involved in the process of increased erythropoiesis in anemia of various pathomechanisms. The aim of this study was to analyze the concentration of erythroferrone and BMP-6 in IBD patients in relation to clinical and laboratory data. The study comprised 148 patients: 118 with IBD, including 73 (61.85%) diagnosed with anemia (42 with Crohn's disease (CD) (66.7%) and 31 (56.4%) with ulcerative colitis (UC)) and 30 as a control group. The erythroferrone concentration was significantly higher in IBD patients with anemia (p = 0.009) and higher in UC patients both with and without anemia (p = 0.018), compared to the control group. In CD, no similar difference was observed between patients with and without anemia. Regarding BMP-6, higher levels were found in CD patients with anemia compared to the control group (p = 0.021). The positive correlation between BMP-6 and iron concentration in UC was also noticed. In conclusion, we confirm an increase in erythroferrone concentration in the entire group of IBD patients with anemia, while BMP-6 levels were higher only in anemic CD patients. Due to the clinical importance of anemia in IBD, this problem is worth further analysis and research projects.

Aim of the study: The treatment of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is based on steroids and azathioprine (AZA). AZA is a pro-drug which is converted among others into 6-thioguanine (6-TG) and 6-methylmercaptopurine (6-MMP). The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the AZA active metabolite 6-TG and both the biochemical and histological remission outcomes. Material and methods: The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of a single chart review. The sample size consisted of 44 pediatric patients with AIH. Biochemical remission was defined as an alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level below 40 U/l and histological remission was defined as a situation when the control biopsy revealed inflammation grade G1 (or lower) in the Batts-Ludwig score. Statistical analysis was applied to assess the difference in remission outcomes in patients with different levels of 6-TG. Results: In the benchmark variant of our statistical analysis, we found that the correlation between 6-TG and ALT in the sample was not statistically significant. Moreover, the difference between the mean levels of ALT in the populations in and without remission was not statistically significant (the p-value of the t-test was 0.16). Conclusions: Our results tend to support the claim that there is no statistically significant relationship between 6-TG concentration and remission (both biochemical and histological) in pediatric patients with AIH.

Squalene is an antioxidant that plays an essential role in fat metabolism. The study aimed to assess the effect of squalene supplied in feed on the growth performance, health status, and fatty acid profiles of muscle and liver of Siberian sturgeon, rainbow trout, and Eurasian perch. The experimental feeds containing 0%, 0.5%, and 1.0% squalene were prepared for each fish species. Hematological and biochemical indices, liver histology, and fatty acid profiling of muscle and liver were analyzed. Squalene supplementation was safe for fish, and no negative influence on growth status was observed. However, changes in the values of hematological and biochemical indicators were found, including the level of triglycerides in the blood of rainbow trout, and cholesterol in the blood of Eurasian perch. The addition of squalene influences the nucleocytoplasmic index values in all fish offered feed containing 1% squalene. The retention of squalene in the liver and muscle of experimental Siberian sturgeon was observed in both 0.5% and 1.0% squalene levels of feed. The PUFA and docosahexaenoic acid increase was observed in all fish in groups with squalene addition. Dietary squalene increases the content of PUFAs in tissues of the examined species.

Leukocytapheresis, a blood purification therapy, exerts anti-inflammatory effects by removing activated leukocytes from the peripheral blood through extracorporeal circulation. It is a potential option of treatment for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), especially those with ulcerative colitis (UC), who do not respond to conventional therapy. Given that it has a favourable safety profile and seems to have steroid sparing effects, its position in the treatment of UC is likely to expand. However, there is inadequate evidence to draw any conclusions about the efficacy of leukocytapheresis in patients with Crohn's disease, and it should only be used in accordance with special arrangements for consent. Considering the current level of knowledge, it is essential to conduct large, well-designed, randomized clinical trials to evaluate the effects of leukocytapheresis in the management of IBD patients.

It is known that organic nitrogen may modify uptake and toxicity of metals but direct metabolic and microbial comparison of various organic N sources is not available. We therefore studied comparative impact of additional N sources (nitrate, urea or allantoin as 1 mM of N for each compound in addition to 15 mM of inorganic N in the Hoagland solution) on Cd toxicity and microbial activity in common crop cucumber. Organic N significantly elevated the growth, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic activity under Cd excess in comparison with inorganic N though the impact on Cd uptake was negligible. Both organic N compounds also affected accumulation of mineral nutrients, total N, amino acids, and protein content in Cd-stressed plants. Among organic acids, mainly allantoin and partially urea affected accumulation of citrate and tartrate. The most notably, we detected that allantoin was decomposed even within 24 h by microbes into the urea, but it significantly elevated rhizosphere microbial activity. All these data indicate that allantoin is metabolized by plants/microbes into the urea and that it affects microbes mainly in the rhizosphere, which could contribute to amelioration of Cd toxicity.
