RESUMEN

We propose a method for diagnosis of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by using a terahertz (THz) metamaterial (MM) biosensor. The biosensor has a resonance frequency at about 0.801 THz and can measure the concentration of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in serum. The sensitivity of the sensor is 124 GHz/refractive index unit (RIU), and the quality-factor (Q) is 6.913, respectively. When the surface of the biosensor is covered with healthy serum (AFP≤7ng/mL), the maximum resonance frequency shift is 50 GHz. However, when it is covered with serum from patients with cirrhosis and early HCC (AFP>7ng/mL), the resonance frequency shift is more than 59 GHz. Positive correlation exists between the frequency shift of the biosensor and serum levels of the AFP in the HCC patients. This study provides a method for quick diagnosis and prediction of cirrhosis and HCC.

RESUMEN

We propose a scheme for tunable elliptically polarized terahertz (THz) radiation by two-color linearly polarized Laguerre-Gaussian lasers irradiating gas plasmas. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that the field strength of THz radiation can achieve MV/cm-scale, and the radiation frequency is determined by the plasma frequency and the electron cyclotron frequency. The emitted THz radiation is Hermite-Gaussian (HG) with a broadband waveform which can be attributed to the axial magnetic fields induced by the twisted drive pulses. Meanwhile, the ellipticity of the emitted THz wave can be effectively tuned by changing the laser intensities and the extra relative phase of the two driving lasers. Thus our scheme provides an efficient and practical approach to acquire tunable HG THz radiation with elliptical polarization, which may own some novel and unique application prospects in various areas.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Lung cancer is continuously the leading cause of cancer related death, resulting from the lack of specific symptoms at early stage. A large-scale screening method may be the key point to find asymptomatic patients, leading to the reduction of mortality. METHODS: An alternative method combining breath test and a machine learning algorithm is proposed. 236 breath samples were analyzed by TD-GCMS. Breath profile of each sample is composed of 308 features extracted from chromatogram. Gradient boost decision trees algorithm was employed to recognize lung cancer patients. Bootstrap is performed to simulate real diagnostic practice, with which we evaluated the confidence of our methods. RESULTS: An accuracy of 85 % is shown in 6-fold cross validations. In statistical bootstrap, 72 % samples are marked as "confident", and the accuracy of confident samples is 93 % throughout the cross validations. CONCLUSION: We have proposed such a non-invasive, accurate and confident method that might contribute to large-scale screening of lung cancer. As a consequence, more asymptomatic patients with early lung cancer may be detected.

RESUMEN

The 'windows' or 'doors' on the surface of a closed hollow structure can enable the exchange of material and information between the interior and exterior of one hollow sphere or between two hollow spheres, and this information or material exchange can also be controlled through altering the window' size. Thus, it is very interesting and important to achieve the fabrication and adjustment of the 'windows' or 'doors' on the surface of a closed hollow structure. In this paper, we propose a new method based on the temple-assisted deposition method to achieve the fabrication of hollow spheres with windows of accurate size and number. Through precisely controlling of deposition parameters (i.e., deposition angle and number), hollow spheres with windows of total size from 0% to 50% and number from 1 to 6 have been successfully achieved. A geometrical model has been developed for the morphology simulation and size calculation of the windows, and the simulation results meet well with the experiment. This model will greatly improve the convenience and efficiency of this temple-assisted deposition method. In addition, these hollow spheres with desired windows also can be dispersed into liquid or arranged regularly on any desired substrate. These advantages will maximize their applications in many fields, such as drug transport and nano-research container.

RESUMEN

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are key regulatory molecules involved in a variety of biological processes and human diseases. However, the pathological effects of lncRNAs on primary varicose great saphenous veins (GSVs) remain unclear. The purpose of the present study was to identify aberrantly expressed lncRNAs involved in the prevalence of GSV varicosities and predict their potential functions. Using microarray with 33,045 lncRNA and 30,215 mRNA probes, 557 lncRNAs and 980 mRNAs that differed significantly in expression between the varicose great saphenous veins and control veins were identified in six pairs of samples. These lncRNAs were sub-grouped and mRNAs expressed at different levels were clustered into several pathways with six focused on metabolic pathways. Quantitative real-time PCR replication of nine lncRNAs was performed in 32 subjects, validating six lncRNAs (AF119885, AK021444, NR_027830, G36810, NR_027927, uc.345-). A coding-non-coding gene co-expression network revealed that four of these six lncRNAs may be correlated with 11 mRNAs and pathway analysis revealed that they may be correlated with another 8 mRNAs associated with metabolic pathways. In conclusion, aberrantly expressed lncRNAs for GSV varicosities were here systematically screened and validated and their functions were predicted. These findings provide novel insight into the physiology of lncRNAs and the pathogenesis of varicose veins for further investigation. These aberrantly expressed lncRNAs may serve as new therapeutic targets for varicose veins. The Human Ethnics Committee of Shanghai East Hospital, Tongji University School of Medicine approved the study (NO.: 2011-DF-53).
