RESUMEN

Measuring ligand interactions with membrane proteins in single live cells is critical for understanding many cellular processes and screening drugs. However, developing such a capability has been a difficult challenge. Here, we employ evanescent scattering microscopy (ESM) to show that ligand binding to membrane proteins can change the cell adhesion properties, which are intrinsic cell properties and independent of random cell micromotions and ligand mass, thus allowing the kinetics analyses of both proteins and small molecules binding to membrane proteins in both single fixed and live cells. In addition, utilizing the high spatiotemporal resolution of ESM, the positions of cell adhesion sites can be tracked in real-time to analyze the cell deformations and migrations, thus providing a potential approach for understanding the cell activity during the ligand binding process in detail. The presented method may pave the road for developing a versatile and easy-to-use label-free detection strategy for in situ analysis of molecular interaction dynamics in living biosystems with single-cell resolution.

Fingerprints are extremely useful in personal identification; however, they are usually based on physical rather than chemical images because it remains a challenge to reveal a clear chemical fingerprint easily and sensitively. Herein, a surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) method, combined with a chemically selective stepwise signal amplification (CS3A) strategy, is proposed to chemically image fingerprints with adjustable sensitivity and clarity. High-fidelity glucose-associated fingerprint images were obtained at five to seven cycles of CS3A based on the recognition reaction of concanavalin A (ConA) with dextran. The method is also extendable to image substances that possess and/or can be tagged with ConA- or dextran-recognizable groups. For demonstration, SPRi of carboxylic substances was conducted by amidating the carboxyl group with glucosamine to enable the ConA-based CS3A. Glucose- and carboxyl-based fingerprints were simultaneously and clearly imaged, allowing us to perform quantitative analysis of the representative of either glucose or amino acid (e.g., serine) or both. The curves measured from the standard spots were linear in the ranges of 1-4000 µM for glucose and 3.2-4000 µM for serine, with linear correlated coefficients of 0.9979 and 0.9962, respectively. It was then applied to the study of metabolic secretions in fingerprints during running exercise, yielding variation tendencies similar to those measured from sweat samples in the literature. As a noninvasive tool, the CS3A-coupled SPRi reveals both clear images of fingerprints and quantitative chemical information, and it is anticipated to become a competitive new method for chemically imaging fingerprints.

BACKGROUND: Recurrence continues to place significant burden on patients and tuberculosis programmes worldwide, and previous studies have rarely provided analysis in negative recurrence cases. We characterized the epidemiological features of recurrent pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients, estimated its probability associated with different bacteriology results and risk factors. METHODS: Using 2005-2018 provincial surveillance data from Henan, China, where the permanent population approximately were 100 million, we described the epidemiological and bacteriological features of recurrent PTB. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazard models, respectively, were used to estimate probability of recurrent PTB and risk factors. RESULTS: A total of 7143 (1.5%) PTB patients had recurrence, and of 21.1% were bacteriological positive on both laboratory tests (positive-positive), and of 34.9% were negative-negative. Compared with bacteriological negative recurrent PTB at first episodes, the bacteriological positive cases were more male (81.70% vs 72.79%; P < 0.001), higher mortality risk (1.78% vs 0.92%; P = 0.003), lower proportion of cured or completed treatment (82.81% vs 84.97%; P = 0.022), and longer time from onset to end-of-treatment. The probability of recurrence was higher in bacteriological positive cases than those in bacteriological negative cases (0.5% vs 0.4% at 20 months; P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Based on patient's epidemiological characteristics and bacteriological type, it was necessary to actively enact measures to control their recurrent.

BACKGROUND: Health-care workers (HCWs) are an epidemiological group with increased exposure to tuberculosis (TB), especially at health-care facilities (HCFs) with poor TB infection control in high-TB-burden settings. China is a high-TB-burden country, and the comprehensive measures for stopping TB transmission at some HCFs were not implemented well owing to limited resources and other factors. The purpose of this study was to review risk of occupational exposure to TB among HCWs and its change trend, and identify epidemiological characteristics of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) among HCWs in Henan, central part of China. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted from 2010 to 2017. All HCWs and teachers in Henan were enrolled to the study as exposed group and non-exposed control group, respectively. Relative risk (RR), attributable risk (AR) and AR percent (AR%) were used to measure the association between the occupational exposure and PTB, and estimated with Poisson regression. RESULTS: The study results showed a total of 1663 cases of PTB were reported among the HCWs in Henan, accounting for 3.2‰ of all PTB cases reported in the whole population, and annual incidence rate of PTB among HCWs declined by 34% from 2010 to 2017. Over the eight years, the incidence rate of PTB among HCWs was 43.7 cases per 100,000 person-years (PYs), significantly higher than that among teachers (18.8 cases/100,000 PYs), and RR, AR and AR% were estimated to 2.3, 24.9 cases per 100,000 PYs and 57%, respectively. Among HCWs, males were more likely to suffer from PTB than females (adjusted RR: 1.3; 95%CI: 1.2-1.4), and HCWs aged under 25 years had the highest relative risk over all age groups with adjusted RR equaling to 8.3 (95%CI: 6.9-9.9) calculated with those aged 45-54 years as the reference. CONCLUSIONS: Although overall incidence rate of PTB among HCWs showed decreasing temporal trends over the period of 2010-2017, attributable risk of occupational exposure to TB among HCWs did not decrease in Henan, and TB infection at HCFs for males, young or senior HCWs, especially for young HCWs is of much concern.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of physical activity (PA) have been well documented, and the worksite is a promising setting for PA promotion. The aims of this study were as follows: 1. To evaluate the effect of a group-based worksite intervention on PA and health-related outcomes by using pedometers. 2. To examine the associations between the change in vigorous physical activity (VPA)/moderate physical activity (MPA)/walking and health related outcomes. METHODS: A total of 398 participants (221 in the intervention group (IG) and 177 in the control group (CG)) from 17 worksites were recruited for a prospective self-controlled trial of a worksite physical activity intervention program in China. In the IG, a pedometer was utilized to self-monitor the PA, together with group competition, goal setting, and other incentives. No intervention was applied to the CG. Physical activity, sedentary behavior, and health-related outcomes were measured at baseline and immediately after the 100-day period intervention. RESULTS: A total of 262 participants completed the program (68.3% adherence). Adherence in the intervention group was 67.9% (n = 150/221). Improvements between baseline and follow-up among intervention participants were observed in the following parameters: VPA (+ 109.7 METs/week; p < 0.05), walking (+ 209.2 METs/week; p < 0.01), systolic blood pressure (SBP; - 2.1 mmHg; p < 0.01), waist circumference (WC; - 2.3 cm; p < 0.01), body fat percentage (BF); - 1.0%; p < 0.01), and body mass index (BMI; - 0.5 kg/m2; p < 0.01). VPA was related to changes in body fat percentage (p < 0.05) and body mass index (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This integrated group-based intervention program contributed to comprehensive improvement in health-related outcomes. The study was useful for establishing associations between change in VPA/MPA/walking and health-related outcomes in a natural setting. Long-term evaluation is required to examine the potential of such an integrated intervention to promote PA. An ultra-sensitive sensor was fabricated to measure dopamine through quenching and restoring FITC fluorescence by the competitive binding of dopamine and N-acetylneuraminic acid with mercaptophenylboronic acid anchored on the gold nanoparticles. Assessed by quantifying dopamine in human urine samples, it reached a limit of detection of as low as 50 pM dopamine over a linear range from 10-10 M to 10-7 M. It also features low technical barriers and operation cost, and the strategy proposed could be extendable to other analytes and not restricted to the gold nanoparticles.

MicroRNA (miRNA) is a promising new type of biomarkers but at a low fM level and hard to be analyzed. Herein proposed is an innovated surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) method merged with a novel in-plane and vertical signal amplification strategy, that is, orthogonal signal amplification to enable a direct determination of sub-fM miRNA-15a (a multiple tumor diagnostic biomarker). The core idea is to add more mass on a target sample spot first along the surficial direction, then upward from the surface. In detection of miRNA, this was realized by coupling a miRNA-initiated surficial cyclic DNA-DNA hybridization reaction with a DNA-initiated upward cyclic polymerization reaction. A perfect SPRi sensing chip with isolated gold islands bordered by hydrophobic CYTOP was fabricated and used to obtain high-quality chip with low fabrication difficulty. As a result, SPRi contrast largely increases, able to reach a limit of detection and limit of quantification down to 0.56 and 5fM for miRNA-15a, about 107-fold improvement of sensitivity compared with a common SPRi detection. The method could quantify standard miRNA-15a spiked in human serum with an ideal recovery ranging from 98.6% to 104.9% and was validated to be applicable to the direct determination of miRNA-15a in healthy and cancer human serums. The orderly and controllable in situ sensitizing strategy is powerful and readily extendable to detection of other miRNAs.

A stepwise strategy was proposed to controllably amplify surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) signals and used to establish a method for sensitive detection of small saccharides and large glycoconjugates. The key is to enlarge the target analytes step by step through a cyclic recognition reaction of concanavalin A (ConA) with dextran, which can easily be integrated into SPRi detection. The reaction is theoretically expected to proceed with infinite cycles by addition of ConA and dextran one after another, and in practice, it allows for performing signal amplification for up to 20 steps, which nearly reaches the limit of the propagation depth of surface plasmon waves. Because of the nonspecific adsorption effect, the maximum signals of small sugars were measured at steps 5-7 by the use of small molecules like ethanol amine to block the nonspecific adsorption. The real applicability of the method was validated by SPRi determination of either immobilized saccharides and glycoproteins or captured carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) from patient samples with a limit of detection down to 2.5 µM glucose or 50 pg/mL of CEA. A wide extendibility of the method was confirmed by detecting other ConA-recognizable analytes like human IgG, ovalbumin, α-fetoprotein, and analytes convertible to ConA- or dextran-recognizable forms. Notably, other cyclic reactions specific to saccharides or other analytes are in theory exploitable, which will further widen the applicability of the method and strategy.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is essential for the development of efficient tuberculosis control strategies. China has the second-largest tuberculosis burden in the world. Recent transmission and infection with M. tuberculosis, particularly drug-resistant strains, may account for many new tuberculosis cases. METHODS: We performed a population-based molecular epidemiologic study of pulmonary tuberculosis in China during 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2012. We defined clusters as cases with identical variable number tandem repeat genotype patterns and identified the risk factors associated with clustering, by logistic regression. Relative transmission rates were estimated by the sputum smear status and drug susceptibility status of tuberculosis patients. RESULTS: Among 2274 culture-positive tuberculosis patients with genotyped isolates, there were 705 (31.0%) tuberculosis patients in 287 clusters. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.86; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.25-2.63) and infection with a Beijing family strain (aOR, 1.56; 95% CI, 1.23-2.96) were associated with clustering. Eighty-four of 280 (30.0%) clusters had a putative source case that was sputum smear negative, and 30.6% of their secondary cases were attributed to transmission by sputum smear-negative patients. The relative transmission rate for sputum smear negative compared with sputum smear-positive patients was 0.89 (95% CI, .68-1.10), and was 1.51 (95% CI, 1.00-2.24) for MDR tuberculosis vs drug-susceptible tuberculosis. CONCLUSIONS: Recent transmission of M. tuberculosis, including MDR strains, contributes substantially to tuberculosis disease in China. Sputum smear-negative cases were responsible for at least 30% of the secondary cases. Interventions to reduce the transmission of M. tuberculosis should be implemented in China.

BACKGROUND: Differences in carcinogen exposure from different cigarette products could contribute to differences in smoking-associated cancer incidence among Chinese compared with US smokers. METHODS: Urine concentrations of metabolites of nicotine, the tobacco-specific nitrosamine (TSNA) 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites (PAHs) were compared in 238 Chinese and 203 US daily smokers. RESULTS: Comparing Chinese versus US smokers, daily nicotine intake and nicotine intake per cigarette smoked were found to be similar. When normalised for cigarettes per day, urine NNAL excretion was fourfold higher in US smokers, while the excretion of urine metabolites of the PAHs fluorene, phenanthrene and pyrene metabolites was 50% to fourfold higher in Chinese smokers (all, p<0.0001). Similar results were seen when NNAL and PAHs excretion was normalised for daily nicotine intake. CONCLUSIONS: Patterns of carcinogen exposure differ, with lower exposure to TSNA and higher exposure to PAHs in Chinese compared with US smokers. These results most likely reflect country differences in cigarette tobacco blends and manufacturing processes, as well as different environmental exposures. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT00264342.

RESUMEN

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a powerful tool for determining molecular interactions quantitatively. SPR imaging (SPRi) further improves the throughput of SPR technology and provides the spatially resolved capability for observing the molecular interaction dynamics in detail. SPRi is becoming more and more popular in biological and chemical sensing and imaging. However, SPRi suffers from low spatial resolution due to the imperfect optical components and delocalized features of propagating surface plasmonic waves along the surface. Diverse kinds of approaches have been developed to improve the spatial resolution of SPRi, which have enormously impelled the development of the methodology and further extended its possible applications. In this minireview, we introduce the mechanisms for building a high-spatial-resolution SPRi system and present its experimental schemes from prism-coupled SPRi and SPR microscopy (SPRM) to surface plasmonic scattering microscopy (SPSM); summarize its exciting applications, including molecular interaction analysis, molecular imaging and profiling, tracking of single entities, and analysis of single cells; and discuss its challenges in recent decade as well as the promising future.

The evidence remains inconsistent regarding whether vitamin D deficiency (VDD) increases the risk of prediabetes. This study aimed to examine whether there is sex-specific association between VDD and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in Henan. The data were sourced from the survey of chronic diseases and nutrition in Henan. Multinomial logistic regression models based on complex sampling design and weight were developed to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and confidence interval (95%CI) for measuring the association between VDD and IFG/IGT. The prevalence rate of IGT in men was 20.1% in the VDD group, significantly higher than that in the non-VDD group (10.5%), but no significant difference was observed in women between the VDD and non-VDD groups; there were no significant differences in IFG prevalence between the VDD and non-VDD groups in either men or women. It was found that the association between VDD and IGT was statistically significant in men. The adjusted OR (95%CI) of VDD was 1.99 (1.24-3.19) for IGT in men and 14.84 (4.14-53.20) for IGT in men having a family history of DM. Thus, men with VDD were more likely to live with IGT than those without VDD, especially for men having a family history of diabetes.

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have shown great potential as hole injection materials for perovskite light-emitting diodes due to their low parasitic absorption and ability to adjust energy level alignment. However, the head and anchoring groups on SAM molecules with significant differences in polarity can lead to the formation of micelles in the commonly used alcoholic processing solvent, inhibiting the formation of an intact SAM. In this work, the introduction of methyl groups on carbazole in the phosphonic-acid-based SAM materials is found to facilitate energy level alignment and promote the formation of compact SAMs. The alternative molecular structure also enhances the solvent resistance of poly(9-vinylcarbazole), suppressing interfacial defect densities and nonradiative recombination processes in the emissive perovskites. PeLEDs based on the methyl-containing SAMs exhibit ∼30% enhancement in efficiency. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the design of SAM materials for PeLED applications.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) infection prevention and control (IPC) in healthcare facilities is key to reducing transmission risk. A framework for systematically improving TB IPC through training and mentorship was implemented in 9 healthcare facilities in China from 2017 to 2019. METHODS: Facilities conducted standardized TB IPC assessments at baseline and quarterly thereafter for 18 months. Facility-based performance was assessed using quantifiable indicators for IPC core components and administrative, environmental, and respiratory protection controls, and as a composite of all control types We calculated the percentage changes in scores over time and differences by IPC control type and facility characteristics. RESULTS: Scores for IPC core components increased by 72% during follow-up when averaged across facilities. The percentage changes for administrative, environmental, and respiratory protection controls were 39%, 46%, and 30%, respectively. Composite scores were 45% higher after the intervention. Overall, scores increased most during the first 6 months. There was no association between IPC implementation and provincial economic development or volume of TB services. CONCLUSIONS: TB IPC policies and practices showed most improvement early during implementation and did not differ consistently by facility characteristics. The training component of the project helped increase the capacity of healthcare professionals to manage TB transmission risks. Lessons learned here will inform national TB IPC guidance.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors and behavior features related to chronic diseases among adults in Shanghai. METHODS: A total of 15 516 subjects aged over 18 years old were selected from the investigation project on chronic diseases and relevant risk factors in Shanghai in 2010. Questionnaire were used to investigate the general information of the subjects, such as behavior features as smoking, drinking, diet, physical activity as well as the prevalence and control of chronic diseases as hypertension and diabetes. The physical examination included height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, blood glucose and blood lipids. RESULTS: Being preprocessed by complex weighting method, the data showed that the overweight rate of Shanghai adults aged above 18 was 32.4% (5288), separately 32.2% (2506) and 32.5% (2782) (χ(2) = 0.10, P = 0.844) in urban and rural areas; the obesity rate was 8.8% (1538), separately 8.7% (738) and 8.8% (800) (χ(2) = 0.06, P = 0.901) in urban and rural areas. The overweight rate was separately 36.0% (2888) in males and 28.6% (2400) in females (χ(2) = 96.61, P < 0.01); while the obesity rate was separately 8.7% (745) in males and 8.9% (793) in females (χ(2) = 0.06, P = 0.851). Abdominal obesity rate was 44.3% (7419), separately 47.8% (3892) in males and 40.6% (3527) in females (χ(2) = 81.23, P < 0.01), 46.5% (3703) in urban areas and 42.6% (3716) in rural areas (χ(2) = 24.37, P = 0.069). Current smoking rate was 25.0% (3813), separately 48.4% (3722) and 1.2% (91) in males and females (χ(2) = 4572.06, P < 0.01); 23.6% (1609) and 26.0% (2204) in urban and rural areas (χ(2) = 11.92, P = 0.018). The regular smoking rate was 22.1% (3402). The rate of having the habit of drinking at least once a month in males was 39.5% (3102), separately 35.1% (1262) and 42.7% (1840) in urban and rural areas (χ(2) = 45.98, P = 0.012). The rate of drinking almost every day was 16.3% (1380), and the percentage of excessive alcohol consumption was 28.9% (2483). The percentage in group of subjects aging between 45-59 years old was 38.5% (1191), which was higher than that in any other groups (22.8% (641) in group aging 18-44 years old and 22.9% (651) in group aging ≥ 60 years old) (χ(2) = 241.38, P < 0.01). The percentage of over-drinking in rural area was higher than that in urban area, which was 33.5% (1578) and 22.8% (905) respectively (χ(2) = 117.12, P < 0.01). The percentage of once over-drinking was 11.3% (903). It was higher in group aging between 45-49 years old (15.3% (461)) than in other groups (9.0% (222) in group aging 18-44 years old and 8.2% (220) in group aging ≥ 60 years old) (χ(2) = 78.21, P < 0.01). It was also higher in rural area (13.5% (605)) than in urban area (8.3% (298)) (χ(2) = 51.74, P < 0.01). There were 75.0% (11 993) of the Shanghai adults never took physical activity. And the most important problems in dietary habit were insufficient intake of dairy products (98.0%, 15 218), vegetables (53.0%, 7864) and fruits (84.6%, 13 372), excess consumption of sodium (52.0%, 8257) and oil (51.7%, 7884). CONCLUSION: The risk factors of chronic diseases were highly prevalent in Shanghai. The prevalence of risk factors as overweight or obesity, lack of physical activity, smoking, over-drinking and unhealthy dietary habits were higher among adults living in suburban areas than those living in urban areas; the prevalence was also higher among the young adults than that among the elderly people, higher among males than that among females.

Long-term mining activities have changed the hydrogeochemical evolution process of groundwater and threatened the safe use of groundwater. By using the methods of hydrochemistry and multivariate statistical analysis, this study determined the hydrogeochemical evolution mechanism affecting the quality of karst groundwater by analyzing the conventional hydrochemistry data of the karst groundwater of the Carboniferous Taiyuan Formation in Hengyuan Coal Mine in the recent 12 years. The results show that, under the disturbance of mining, the quality of karst groundwater in Taiyuan Formation is poor, mainly because the contents of Na++K+ and SO42- are too high to allow usage as drinking water. The reason for the high content of SO42- in karst groundwater lies in the dissolution of gypsum and the oxidation of pyrite, and the high content of Na++K+ lies in the cation exchange. Influenced by the stratum grouting, the circulation of karst groundwater is improved, the cation exchange is weakened, and the desulfurization is enhanced. In the future, it is predicted that the hydrochemical type of karst groundwater in Taiyuan Formation in the study area will evolve from SO4-Ca·Mg type to HCO3-Ca Mg type.

BACKGROUND: In 2005, China established an internet-based Tuberculosis Information Management System (TBIMS) to monitor changes in tuberculosis (TB). Many scholars have conducted epidemiological research using TBIMS; however, few studies assessing control strategies have been performed based on this platform data. Henan province is a high TB incidence area in China where, in addition to following the nationwide TB strategies, a series of local intervention combinations have been implemented. OBJECTIVE: Our study aims to evaluate the impact of nationwide TB intervention combinations on epidemiological changes and determine whether Henan province can achieve the World Health Organization's (WHO) goal of reducing TB incidence by 50% and TB mortality by 75% by the year 2025. METHODS: We used descriptive statistical methods to show the spatial and temporal distribution of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) reported to the TBIMS database from 2005 to 2018, and logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the risk factors of bacteriological-positive TB. The dynamic compartmental model and Bayesian melding approach was adopted to estimate the burden of TB under the impact of different TB control policies. RESULTS: In total, 976,526 PTB cases were notified to the TBIMS in Henan in a period of 14 years. Although the overall incidence of PTB declined from 91.4/105 to 58.5/105, and the overall incidence of bacteriological-positive PTB declined from 44.5/105 to 14.7/105, the WHO's 2025 goal could not be met. The distribution of high incidence and poverty-stricken counties were basically overlapped. Men, farmers and herdsmen (in rural areas), and subjects aged ≥60 years were more likely to develop bacteriological-positive PTB. The increasing treatment success for drug-susceptible tuberculosis and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis has not provided the desired reduction in incidence and mortality. CONCLUSIONS: To achieve the targeted goal, while improving the cure rate of TB, new active (rather than passive) detection and intervention strategies should be formulated based on epidemiological characteristics in Henan province.

BACKGROUND: Low-tar cigarette smoking is gaining popularity in China. The China National Tobacco Corporation (CNTC) promotes low-tar cigarettes as safer than regular cigarettes. METHODS: A total of 543 male smokers smoking cigarettes with different tar yields (15 mg, regular cigarettes, 10-13 mg low-tar cigarettes and < 10 mg low-tar cigarettes) were recruited in Shanghai, China, who then completed a questionnaire on smoking behaviour and provided a urine sample for analysis of the nicotine metabolites cotinine and trans-3'-hydroxycotinine. A total of 177 urine samples were selected at random for the analysis of the carcinogens polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites (PAHs) (1-hydroxypyrene, naphthols, hydroxyfluorenes and hydroxyphenanthrenes) and the tobacco specific nitrosamine 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-butanone (NNK) metabolites, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-butanol (NNAL) and NNAL-glucuronide. Values were normalised by creatinine to correct for possible distortions introduced by dilution or concentration of the urine. RESULTS: Smokers of low-tar cigarettes smoked fewer cigarettes per day (p=0.001) compared to smokers of regular cigarettes. Despite this lower reported consumption, levels of cotinine, trans-3'-hydroxycotinine and PAHs in urine of people smoking low-tar cigarettes were not correlated with nominal tar delivery of the cigarettes they smoked. Urine concentrations of NNAL were higher in smokers of lower tar than higher tar cigarettes. CONCLUSIONS: Chinese low-tar cigarettes do not deliver lower doses of nicotine and carcinogens than regular cigarettes, therefore it is unlikely that there would be any reduction in harm. CNTC's promotion of low-tar cigarettes as 'less harmful' is a violation of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which China ratified in 2005.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) greatly increases the detection sensitivity of Raman scattering. However, its real applications are often degraded due to the unrepeatable preparation of SERS substrates. Herein presented is a very facile and cost-effective method to reproducibly produce a novel type of SERS substrate, a monolayer photonic crystal (PC). With a building block of laboratory-prepared monodisperse SiO2 particles deposited with space-tunable silver nanobulges (SiO2@nAg), a PC substrate was first assembled at the air-water interface through needle tip flowing, then transferred onto a silicon slide by a pulling technique. The transferred monolayer PCs were characterized by SEM and AFM to have a hexagonal close-packed lattice. They could increase Raman scattering intensity by up to 2.2 × 107-fold, as tested with p-aminothiophenol. The relative standard deviations were all below 5% among different substrates or among different locations on the same substrate. The excellent reproducibility was ascribed to the highly ordered structure of PCs, while the very high sensitivity was attributed to the strong hotspot effect caused by the appropriately high density of nanobulges deposited on SiO2 particles and by a closed lattice. The PC substrates were validated to be applicable to the SERS assay of trace thiol pesticides. Thiram pesticide is an example determined in apple juice samples at a concentration 102-fold lower than the food safety standard of China. This method is extendable to the analysis of other Raman-active thiol chemicals in different samples, and the substrate preparation approach can be modified for the fabrication of more PC substrates from other metallic nanobulge-deposited particles rather than silica only.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization End TB Strategy meant that compared with 2015 baseline, the reduction in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) incidence should be 20 and 50% in 2020 and 2025, respectively. The case number of PTB in China accounted for 9% of the global total in 2018, which ranked the second high in the world. From 2007 to 2019, 854 672 active PTB cases were registered and treated in Henan Province, China. This study was to assess whether the WHO milestones could be achieved in Henan Province. METHODS: The active PTB numbers in Henan Province from 2007 to 2019, registered in Chinese Tuberculosis Information Management System were analyzed to predict the active PTB registration rates in 2020 and 2025, which is conductive to early response measures to ensure the achievement of the WHO milestones. The time series model was created by monthly active PTB registration rates from 2007 to 2016, and the optimal model was verified by data from 2017 to 2019. The Ljung-Box Q statistic was used to evaluate the model. The statistically significant level is α = 0.05. Monthly active PTB registration rates and 95% confidence interval (CI) from 2020 to 2025 were predicted. RESULTS: High active PTB registration rates in March, April, May and June showed the seasonal variations. The exponential smoothing winter's multiplication model was selected as the best-fitting model. The predicted values were approximately consistent with the observed ones from 2017 to 2019. The annual active PTB registration rates were predicted as 49.1 (95% CI: 36.2-62.0) per 100 000 population and 34.4 (95% CI: 18.6-50.2) per 100 000 population in 2020 and 2025, respectively. Compared with the active PTB registration rate in 2015, the reduction will reach 23.7% (95% CI, 3.2-44.1%) and 46.8% (95% CI, 21.4-72.1%) in 2020 and 2025, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The high active PTB registration rates in spring and early summer indicate that high risk of tuberculosis infection in late autumn and winter in Henan Province. Without regard to the CI, the first milestone of WHO End TB Strategy in 2020 will be achieved. However, the second milestone in 2025 will not be easily achieved unless there are early response measures in Henan Province, China.
