RESUMEN

Puerarin (Pue) has significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This work was designed to clarify and investigate the potential mechanisms of Pue in atherosclerosis (AS) progression. In vivo, acrolein (Acr) was inhaled through drinking water to construct AS model. In vitro, CCK-8 assay and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay kit were used to detect cell viability. Apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. The content of malondialdehyde (MDA) was determined by commercial kit, the level of inflammatory factors was detected by ELISA, and proteins were determined by western blot. Pue administration could effectively reduce blood lipid level in Acr-fed mice. Pue suppressed oxidative stress, the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, and the process of aortic histological changes. Pue pretreatment decreased MDA in HUVECs and maintained the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Pue upregulated SIRT1/Nrf2 cascade in HUVECs. Pue increased MYH9 and inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome-related proteins, and the inhibition of MYH9 significantly impaired Pue-induced Nrf2 activation. Moreover, HUVEC cytotoxicity and apoptosis are alleviated by Pue, in addition to NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis in HUVECs induced by Acr. MYH9 inhibitors effectively suppressed the pyroptosis induced by Acr and prevented injury to HUVECs. In addition, Pue promoted SIRT1/Nrf2 cascade activation in HUVECs. Pue may alleviate Acr-induced AS by activating the MYH9-mediated SIRT1/Nrf2 cascade to inhibit inflammasome activation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Growth arrest-specific 6 (GAS6) is a vitamin K-dependent protein related to inflammation, fibrosis, as well as platelet function. Genetic ablation of GAS6 in mice protects against cardiac hypertrophy and dysfunction. Nonetheless, the association between plasma GAS6 levels and acute heart failure (AHF) patients is still unknown. METHODS: We measured plasma GAS6 concentrations in 1039 patients with AHF who were enrolled in the DRAGON-HF trial (NCT03727828). Mean follow-up of the study was 889 days. The primary endpoint is all-cause death. RESULTS: In total, there were 195 primary endpoints of all-cause death and 135 secondary endpoints of cardiovascular death during the mean follow-up duration of 889 days. The higher levels of GAS6 were associated with higher rates of all-cause and cardiovascular death (P < 0.05). Baseline plasma GAS6 levels were still strongly correlated with clinical outcomes in different models after adjustment for clinical factors and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP, P < 0.05). GAS6 could further distinguish the risks of clinical outcomes based on NT-proBNP measurement. CONCLUSION: Elevated plasma GAS6 levels were associated with an increased risk of all-cause and cardiovascular death in patients with AHF. RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: As a first-line therapy, sacubitril/valsartan (S/V) plays a significant role in the treatment of heart failure. However, its effect on renal function is still uncertain. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Clinical Trials for randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effect of S/V on renal function in patients. The results are reported as the mean difference, relative ratio, and 95% confidence intervals. A total of 13 randomized controlled trials were included (19,367 patients). Among them, 11 studies focused on patients with heart failure, 1 on patients with acute myocardial infarction, and 1 on patients with chronic kidney disease. We found that fewer worsening renal function events, elevated creatine level events, and severe hyperkalemia events (blood potassium >6.0 mmol/L) occurred in the S/V group than those in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitor (RASi) group. The estimated glomerular filtration rate decreased in both the S/V group and the RASi group, but the change was more obvious in the RASi group. There was no significant difference in hyperkalemia events (blood potassium >5.5 mmol/L) between the 2 groups. Subgroup analysis showed that with the extension of follow-up time (>6 months), worsening renal function events occurred less frequently in the S/V group than in the RASi group. Existing evidence has shown that S/V is superior to RASi in general renal safety. Perhaps with the prolongation of treatment time, the advantages of S/V are more obvious.

RESUMEN

Large-scale laser gyroscopes with sufficiently high sensitivity for measurement of the rotation rate of the Earth Ω E are inertial sensors with the capability to provide Earth orientation parameters, i.e., rotation rate and polar motion in near real time. Larger-scale passive resonant gyroscopes (PRGs) theoretically have a lower shot-noise limit. However, the cavity perimeter fluctuations and laser frequency noise become challenges in a passive gyro. In this paper, we introduce a three-wave differential locking scheme for large-scale PRGs, resulting in an in situ measurement of the cavity perimeter with nanometer resolution. Furthermore, the laser frequency noise is effectively suppressed with an additional gain of 30 dB by a double-stage locking system, based on the three-wave differential locking scheme. Finally, the rotation rate resolution of our 3m×3m gyroscope improves to 1.1×10-9 r a d/s over 200 s. The simplicity, robustness, and effectiveness of the locking scheme are important to the long-term operation of large-scale PRGs aiming for applications in the geosciences.

RESUMEN

Objective: To observe roproductive hormone levels in varicocele patients during a cycle (6 years) of Wu Yun Liu Qi, and explore whether the cycle had effect on the roproductive hormone levels. Methods: Data of roproductive hormone levels in varicocele patients from 2015 to 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. FSH、LH、T、PRL、E2 levels and T/E2 ratio were compared among the six years. According to Chinese sexagenary cycle heavenly stems and earthly branches of each year from 2015 to 2020 its yunqi characteristics were determined. Results: Totally data of 848 cases of varicocele patients were collected from 2015 to 2020. Among which, in 2015 (Yiwei year) there were 57 cases, in 2016 (Bingshen year) 83 cases, in 2017 (Dingyou year ) 133 cases, in 2018(Wuxu year) 156 cases, in 2019(Sihai year) 274 cases, and in 2020(Gengzi year) 145 cases. The levels of FSH、LH、PRL、T were not diferrent statistically from the six years except individual year. However, the level of E2 in 2016 when the Yunqi was Shao Yang Xiang Huo Si Tian and Jue Yin Feng Mu Zai Quan obviously higher than other years excpet 2018( All P< 0.05). And T/E2 ratio was lower in 2016 than other years except 2018 and 2020( All P< 0.05). Conclusions: Shi Xiang factors of Wu Yun Liu Qi had effect on roproductive hormone levels in varicocele patients, showing by higher E2 level in Yinshen year when the Shi Xiang factors may have bad effect on human fertility.

RESUMEN

Cryogenic ultrastable laser cavities push laser stability to new levels due to their lower thermal noise limitation. Vibrational noise is one of the major obstacles to achieve a thermal-noise-limited cryogenic ultrastable laser system. Here, we carefully analyze the vibrational noise contribution to the laser frequency. We measure the vibrational noise from the top of the pulse-tube cryocooler down to the experiment space. Major differences emerge between room and cryogenic temperature operation. We cooled a homemade 6 cm sapphire optical resonator down to 3.4 K. Locking a 1064 nm laser to the resonator, we measure a frequency stability of 1.3×10-15. The vibration sensitivities change at different excitation frequencies. The vibrational noise analysis of the laser system paves the way for in situ accurate evaluation of vibrational noise for cryogenic systems. This may help in cryostat design and cryogenic precision measurements.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND Retinal degeneration causes irreversible blindness. Human retinal progenitor cells (hRPCs) have the potential to treat retinal diseases. The vitreous cavity is a relatively immune-privileged site that is suitable for stem cell transplantation in the treatment of retinal diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of intravitreal injection of hRPCs in retinal degeneration therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS hRPCs were primary-cultured and injected into the vitreous cavity of RCS rats. To determine whether hRPCs formed teratomas in immune-deficient mice, hRPCs at different passages were transplanted into BALB/c-nu mice. The visual function was detected by electroretinography recording. Changes in the outer nuclear layer (ONL) were analyzed by histological testing and cell counting. The protective mechanism was further assessed by cytokine antibody array. RESULTS Intravitreal transplantation of hRPCs maintained retinal function and preserved retinal morphology. Importantly, grafted cells in the vitreous cavity were well tolerated, with no adverse effects. Teratoma was not formed in BALB/c-nu mice after hRPCs transplantation. The number of hRPCs-injected eyes and thickness of ONL in the hRPCs-treated group were higher than those in the untreated group and HBSS injection group. The cytokine antibody array revealed that hRPCs expressed GDF-15, PDGF-AA, EGF, and NT-4. CONCLUSIONS Our findings show that intravitreal injection of hRPCs is effective and safe in protecting photoreceptor cells in RCS rats, but were no longer effective at 12 weeks after transplantation. Moreover, hRPCs released multiple neurotrophic factors that may be involved in treating retinal disease.

RESUMEN

Large-scale laser gyroscopes have found important applications in Earth sciences due to their self-sufficient property of measurement of the Earth's rotation without any external references. In order to extend the relative rotation measurement accuracy to a better level so that it can be used for the determination of the Earth orientation parameters (EOP), we investigate the limitations in a passive resonant laser gyroscope (PRG) developed at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) to pave the way for future development. We identify the noise sources from the derived noise transfer function of the PRG. In the frequency range below 10-2Hz, the contribution of free-spectral-range (FSR) variation is the dominant limitation, which comes from the drift of the ring cavity length. In the 10-2 to 103Hz frequency range, the limitation is due to the noises of the frequency discrimination system, which mainly comes from the residual amplitude modulation (RAM) in the frequency range below 2 Hz. In addition, the noise contributed by the Mach-Zehnder-type beam combiner is also noticeable in the 0.01 to 2 Hz frequency range. Finally, possible schemes for future improvement are also discussed.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of bilateral microsurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy (BMSV) in patients with asthenozoospermia or oligozoospermia. METHODS: Totally 147 patients with male infertility received BMSV from January 2018 to May 2019, of whom 109 had complete data recorded. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data, including the total sperm count per ejeculate, sperm concentration and sperm motility before and after surgery, and the rate of natural conception achieved during the follow-up. RESULTS: BMSV achieved a total effectiveness rate of 79.00% in improving the percentage of progressively motile sperm (a rise of ≥20%) and a marked effectiveness rate of 70.00% (a rise of ≥50%) in the 100 cases of asthenozoospermia as compared with the baseline, with a mean recovery time of (110.13 ± 37.43) days. Besides, a total effectiveness rate of 74.29% (an increase of ≥20%) and a marked effectiveness rate of 71.43% (an increase of ≥50%) were attained in the improvement of sperm concentration in the 35 cases of oligozoospermia, with a mean recovery time of (117.00 ± 48.79 ) days. A natural conception rate of 30.30% was observed during the follow-up. No severe adverse events occurred postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: BMSV is significantly effective for the treatment of asthenozoospermia and oligozoospermia.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Human papilloma virus (HPV) is a necessary cause of cervical cancer and is also closely related to penile cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, and anal cancer in males. However, few studies are reported on male HPV. This study aimed to investigate HPV infection of the external genitalia in men whose female partners have cervical HPV infection. METHODS: We collected the relevant data on the male outpatients whose partners had cervical HPV infection in our Department of Urology and Andrology from August to December 2016. We obtained samples with nylon swabs from the glans penis, corona, inner layer of the prepuce and penile body and detected different types of HPV infection using the Hybribio HPV typing kit, PCR and membrane hybridization. RESULTS: Valid data were collected from 140 males, which showed 83.5% of HPV infection of the external genitalia, including 60 cases of HPV6 (43.2%), 27 cases of HPV16 (19.4%), 14 cases of HPV39 (10.1%), 13 cases of HPV18 (9.4%), 13 cases of HPV58 (9.4%), and 13 cases of HPV52 (9.4%). Redundant prepuce was found in 75.5% of the males, but there was no statistically significant difference in the incidence rate of HPV infection between the normal and redundant prepuce groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Men who have the female partners with positive cervical HPV are at high risk of HPV infection and therefore need to be screened and treated so as to reduce HPV infection in both sexes.

RESUMEN

Tumor necrosis factor related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a cytokine that selectively induces apoptosis in many tumor cells while leaving normal cells intact and is thus an attractive candidate for antitumor therapies. This paper reports that the combination of tunicamycin plus TRAIL produced a strong synergistic effect in TRAIL-sensitive human colon cancer HCT116 cells and TRAIL-resistant HT-29 cells. On a cellular mechanistic level, tunicamycin-enhanced TRAIL-induced apoptosis by death receptor (DR) 5 upregulation and DR4 deglycosylation. Knockdown of DR5 but not DR4 expression by specific shRNAs or siRNAs significantly increased tunicamycin-mediated and TRAIL-mediated cell viability. DR5 induction was regulated by C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) and JNK as CHOP siRNA or JNK inhibitor SP600125 considerably abolished the DR5 induction. In addition, tunicamycin inhibited epidermal growth factor receptor glycosylation and the downstream signaling pathways, Akt and extracellular signal-regulated kinases activation, which might also be required for TRAIL sensitization by tunicamycin. In summary, tunicamycin effectively enhanced TRAIL-induced apoptosis might through JNK-CHOP-mediated DR5 upregulation and the inhibition of the epidermal growth factor receptor pathway.

RESUMEN

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a potent cancer cell-specific apoptosis-inducing cytokine with little toxicity to most normal cells. Here, we report that gefitinib and TRAIL in combination produce a potent synergistic effect on TRAIL-sensitive human colon cancer HCT116 cells and an additive effect on TRAIL-resistant HT-29 cells. Interestingly, gefitinib increases the expression of cell surface receptors DR4 and DR5, possibly explaining the synergistic effect. Knockdown of DR4 and DR5 by siRNA significantly decreases gefitinib- and TRAIL-mediated cell apoptosis, supporting this idea. Because the inhibition of gefitinib-induced autophagy by 3-MA significantly decreases DR4 and DR5 upregulation, as well as reduces gefitinib- and TRAIL-induced apoptosis, we conclude that death receptor upregulation is autophagy mediated. Furthermore, our results indicate that death receptor expression may also be regulated by JNK activation, because pre-treatment of cells with JNK inhibitor SP600125 significantly decreases gefitinib-induced death receptor upregulation. Interestingly, SP600125 also inhibits the expression CHOP, yet CHOP has no impact on death receptor expressions. We also find here that phosphorylation of Akt and ERK might also be required for TRAIL sensitization. In summary, our results indicate that gefitinib effectively enhances TRAIL-induced apoptosis, likely via autophagy and JNK- mediated death receptor expression and phosphorylation of Akt and ERK.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the abnormal sperm DNA methylation level and early spontaneous abortion. METHODS: We randomly selected 98 males who met the inclusion criteria and whose wives suffered from unexplained abortion or embryo abortion, and included another 46 normal healthy men present for pre-pregnancy check-up as controls. We examined the semen quality and sperm morphology, obtained the sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) by modified sperm chromatin dispersion, and measured the sperm DNA methylation level using the methylated DNA quantification kit and the colorimetric method. RESULTS: Compared with the normal controls, the men in the unexplained abortion group showed a significantly lower rate of big-halo sperm (ï¼»45.50 ± 26.27ï¼½ vs ï¼»36.49 ± 23.06ï¼½%, P = 0.038), a higher rate of abnormal-head sperm (ï¼»77.08± 12.21ï¼½ vs ï¼»81.09± 10.89ï¼½%, P = 0.049), and a lower level of sperm DNA methylation (ï¼»0.47 ± 0.33ï¼½ vs ï¼»0.36 ± 0.26ï¼½ ng/µl, P = 0.035). The sperm DNA methylation level was positively correlated with the percentage of big-halo sperm (OR=0.546, P<0.01). Multivariate regression analysis manifested that sperm head abnormality was an independent risk factor of early spontaneous abortion or embryo abortion (OR=1.032, P = 0.049), while the high methylation level was protective factor against early spontaneous abortion or embryo abortion (OR=0.244, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: The abnormal level of sperm DNA methylation may be one of the important reasons for early spontaneous abortion or embryo abortion.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the semen quality and its influencing factors in preconception males in Nanjing area so as to provide some evidence for working out effective intervention measures. METHODS: Totally 687 men receiving preconceptional physical examination were enrolled in this study. A questionnaire survey was conducted among the subjects along with an analysis of their semen quality. RESULTS: The median of sperm concentration was 63.3 x 10(6)/ml (95% CI [19.88-119] x 10(6)/ml). The median of grade a sperm was 33.03% (95% CI [19.38-55.05]%), that of grade a + b sperm was 52.08% (95% CI [39.53-69.37]%), and that of teratosperm was 91.75% (95% CI [69-100]%). The median concentration of seminal plasma PMN-elastase was 195.55 ng/ml (95% CI [76.16-3330.38] ng/ml) and that of seminal plasma zinc was 7.62 µmol/L (95% CI [1.5-23, 45] µmol/L). The positive rates of Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), and Gardnerella vaginalis (GV) were 42.4%, 0.3%, and 2.4%, respectively. The median of sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) of those whose wives had a history of adverse pregnancy was 20.25% (95% CI [2.15-68.25]%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that mental stress (OR 1.567, 95% CI [1.081-2.27]) and sedentariness (OR 1.772, 95% CI [1.211-2.592]) were independent risk factors for asthenospermia. CONCLUSION: The sperm quality of preconception males in Nanjing area is not encouraging, and it can be improved by changing undesirable lifestyle and reducing mental stress.

RESUMEN

In this study, a self-healing epoxy asphalt material was developed by incorporating coumarin groups. This material achieved microcrack self-repair under UV irradiation at 50 °C. Fluorescence microscopy observations and mechanical performance tests demonstrated significant advantages in crack filling and mechanical property recovery after repair, with the fracture toughness of the repaired epoxy asphalt reaching 69% of that in its original state. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of temperature and UV irradiation in the self-healing process enhanced the material's durability and service life. This research offers new insights and methods for developing more durable and long-lasting self-healing asphalt materials, showcasing the great potential of smart materials in infrastructure applications.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study is to examine the effect of empagliflozin on cardiac function in rats with chronic heart failure and the possible mechanism. Forty 6-week-old male SD rats were randomly divided into the control group, empagliflozin treatment group, and sham-operated group. SD rats in the control group and empagliflozin treatment group were subjected to ligation of the anterior descending coronary artery to induce an acute myocardial infarction model. SD rats in the sham-operated group were only subjected to threading of the anterior descending branch of the coronary artery without ligation. On the second day after surgery, the control group and sham operation group were given physiological saline by gavage, while the empagliflozin treatment group was given empagliflozin (30 mg/kg/day) by gavage. Sixteen weeks later, cardiac function, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), serum brain natriuretic peptide, hypersensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), iNOS expression levels, and myocardial morphological changes were observed. Compared with that in the control group, heart function in the empagliflozin-treated group was significantly improved, MMP was increased, intracellular ROS levels were decreased, and NT-proBNP and hs-CRP were significantly reduced, and HE staining showed that the cell oedema was less than that in the control group, tissue arrangement was more orderly, and iNOS expression was inhibited. Empagliflozin can improve cardiac function in rats with chronic heart failure, and the mechanism may involve inhibiting inflammation, reducing myocardial oxidative stress, and improving myocardial fibrosis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Atherosclerosis (AS) is a common pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. Puerarin (Pue) is a Chinese herbal remedy used to prevent and treat AS. Here, this research investigated the effect of Pue on AS progression. METHODS: ApoE-/- mice were induced with acrolein. Body weight, blood lipid index, inflammatory factors, mitochondrial oxidative stress, and lipid deposition were detected. IL-6 and TNF-α were detected by ELISA. Oil red staining and H&E staining were used to observe the aortic sinus plaque lesions. Serum expressions of inflammatory factors IL-6, TNF-a, SOD, GSH and MDA were detected by ELISA, the mRNA expression levels of HDAC1 in the aorta were detected by RT-qPCR, and IL-6 and TNF-α in the aorta were detected by immunohistochemistry. JNK, p-JNK, OPA-1, and HDAC1 were detected by Western blotting. RESULTS: Pue administration can effectively reduce lipid accumulation in AS mice induced by acrolein. Pue promoted the activity of SOD, GSH and MDA, and inhibited the formation of atherosclerotic plaques and the process of aortic histological changes. Pue reduced IL-6 and TNF-α. HDAC1 expression was down-regulated and p-JNK-1 and JNK protein expression was up-regulated. CONCLUSION: Pue reduces inflammation and alleviates AS induced by acrolein by mediating the JNK pathway to inhibit HDAC1-mediated oxidative stress disorder.

RESUMEN

Twelve polyphenol derivatives were obtained in a protective activity-guided isolation from the Portulaca oleracea L. extract on a cell model of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) under diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) exposure. Among them, methyl (3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoyl) valylprolinate (PP-10) performed the most protective activity and inhibited DEHP exposure-induced HUVECs' apoptosis. PP-10 also inhibited the DEHP-induced inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ß, and IL-8) and adhesion molecule (ICAM-1 andVCAM-1) overexpression. Furthermore, DEHP-induced NLRP3 inflammasomes' and NF-κB signaling pathway activation was significantly inhibited after the PP-10 treatments. Of note, the current results suggest the potential application of Portulaca oleracea L. and PP-10 in the prevention of DEHP-induced inflammatory damages in HUVECs.

RESUMEN

AIMS: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is frequently detected via echocardiography in individuals with Fabry disease (FD), sometimes leading to confusion with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) of other aetiologies. Considering this diagnosis challenge, FD should be included in the list of differential diagnosis for patients presenting with LVH. To address this concern, we conducted a prospective screening study in China, using dried blood spot (DBS) testing, to evaluate patients with unexplained LVH. METHODS: Our study was designed as a nationwide, multicentre prospective investigation. A total of 1015 patients from 55 different centres who were diagnosed with LVH by echocardiography were screened in the study from September 2022 to December 2023. Demographic information, biochemistry data, echocardiography parameters and clinical observations were meticulously collected from all participants. The DBS method was used to assess α-galactosidase A (α-Gal A) activity in males and both α-Gal A and globotriaosylsphingosine (lyso-Gb3) levels in females. RESULTS: The final screening population included 906 patients (589 males, 65%) with LVH, characterized by a mean maximal myocardial thickness of 14.8 ± 4.6 mm and an average age of 56.9 ± 17.2 years. In total, 43 patients (38 males, 5 females) exhibited low α-Gal A activity measurement (<2.2 µmol/L), while 21 patients (10 males, 11 females) presented low α-Gal A activity or elevated lyso-Gb3 levels (>1.1 ng/mL). Among these patients, eight individuals (7 males and 1 female) were genetically confirmed to harbour pathogenic GLA mutations, resulting in a total prevalence of 0.88%. Compared with patients without FD, patients with FD tended to have proteinuria (75% vs. 21.2%, P = 0.001), family history of HCM (37.5% vs. 2.3%, P < 0.01) and neuropathic pain (37.5% vs. 4.4%, P < 0.01) but lower systolic blood pressure (118.5 ± 12.5 vs. 143.3 ± 29.3 mmHg, P = 0.017). Five mutations were previously recognized as associated with FD while the remaining two, p.Asp313Val (c.938A>T) and c.547+3A>G, were deemed potentially pathogenic. Subsequent familial validation post-diagnosis identified an additional 14 confirmed cases. CONCLUSIONS: This pioneering screening study for FD among Chinese patients with unexplained LVH using DBS measurement, revealed an FD detection rate of 0.88%. Our findings confirmed that the combined measurement of lyso-Gb3 and α-Gal A activity is beneficial for primary screening of FD in patients with LVH. Given the availability of efficacious therapies and the value of cascade screening in extended families, early detection of FD in LVH patients is clinically important.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To compare the outcomes of two approaches (inguinal and subinguinal) of microsurgical varicocelectomy (MV) in Chinese infertile men. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 120 infertile men who met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to two groups and operated with MV using different approaches. The outcomes and complications were then compared. RESULTS: The two groups were similar in all aspects except the percentage of patients using analgesic at 27 h postoperatively (57.6% in the inguinal group, 37.5% in the subinguinal group; p < 0.05). Spontaneous pregnancy was achieved at a ratio of 33.9% in the inguinal group and 30.4% in subinguinal group. The median values of semen parameters were significantly improved postoperatively in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Both approaches are effective methods in the repair of varicocele in infertile men, but more analgesic medication at the first day after operation may be required in inguinal group.
