RESUMEN

QS-21 is a potent vaccine adjuvant and remains the only saponin-based adjuvant that has been clinically approved for use in humans1,2. However, owing to the complex structure of QS-21, its availability is limited. Today, the supply depends on laborious extraction from the Chilean soapbark tree or on low-yielding total chemical synthesis3,4. Here we demonstrate the complete biosynthesis of QS-21 and its precursors, as well as structural derivatives, in engineered yeast strains. The successful biosynthesis in yeast requires fine-tuning of the host's native pathway fluxes, as well as the functional and balanced expression of 38 heterologous enzymes. The required biosynthetic pathway spans seven enzyme families-a terpene synthase, P450s, nucleotide sugar synthases, glycosyltransferases, a coenzyme A ligase, acyl transferases and polyketide synthases-from six organisms, and mimics in yeast the subcellular compartmentalization of plants from the endoplasmic reticulum membrane to the cytosol. Finally, by taking advantage of the promiscuity of certain pathway enzymes, we produced structural analogues of QS-21 using this biosynthetic platform. This microbial production scheme will allow for the future establishment of a structure-activity relationship, and will thus enable the rational design of potent vaccine adjuvants.

PURPOSE: To summarize and analyze the safety and efficacy of a Y-shape Sigma stent loaded with I125 in patients with inoperable malignant main airway obstruction. METHODS: This study was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee, and a written informed consent was obtained from each participant. A Y-shape Sigma stent loaded with I125 was placed under vision from rigid bronchoscopy. The primary endpoint was alleviation of symptoms and improvement of Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score, and the secondary endpoint was complications and technical success. RESULTS: From November 2018 through June 2023, total 33 patients with malignant airway obstruction were palliatively treated by installing Y-shape Sigma stents loaded with I125. The airway lumen was immediately restored and the average airway opening significantly increased to 70 ± 9.4% after the procedure from baseline 30.2 ± 10.5% (p < 0.05). Average KPS score was improved from baseline 30.0 ± 10.0 to 70.0 ± 10.0 (p < 0.05) as well as PaO2 from baseline 50.1 ± 15.4 mmHg to 89.3 ± 8.6 mmHg (p < 0.05). The technical success rate of placing the stent in this study was 73%, and adverse events or complications including bleeding, I125 loss, and airway infection occurred during or after the procedure. CONCLUSION: Placement of Y-shape Sigma stents under vision from rigid bronchoscopy in the patients with malignant airway obstruction is feasible and it immediately alleviates dyspnea and significantly improves quality of life.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between burnout and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among frontline nurses who went to assist the epidemic situation in Wuhan, China, during the outbreak in 2020. The study also explored the mediating role of depression and the moderating role of age in the main relationship. BACKGROUND: The relationship between burnout and PTSD in nurse has rarely been investigated in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Understand the relationship between these variables can provide empirical evidence for developing interventions and protocols that improve the health of nurses in future public health emergencies. DESIGN: An online cross-sectional survey of targeted local 327 nurses who went to assist the COVID-19 epidemic situation in Wuhan during the initial outbreak. METHODS: This study was conducted in August 2020, the burnout scale, the PTSD scale and the depression scale were used to survey participants. The moderated mediation model was used to test research hypotheses. RESULTS: Burnout could affect the PTSD symptoms in nursing staffs and depression could mediate this relationship. Age moderated the relationship between burnout/depression and PTSD, and the effects was strong and significant among younger participants in the relationship between burnout and PTSD. CONCLUSIONS: Burnout was identified as a core risk factor of PTSD in nurses. Depression and age played significant roles in the relationship between burnout and PTSD. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: PTSD, as a symptom that manifests after experiencing a stressful event, should be a key concern among frontline healthcare professionals. This study suggests that PTSD in nurses can be further reduced by reducing burnout. Attention should also be paid to the PTSD status of nurses of different age groups. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Patients and the public were not involved in the design and implementation of this study. Frontline nurses completed an online questionnaire for this study.

Significant improvements in genome sequencing and assembly technology have led to increasing numbers of high-quality genomes, revealing complex evolutionary scenarios such as multiple whole-genome duplication events, which hinders ancestral genome reconstruction via the currently available computational frameworks. Here, we present the Inferring Ancestor Genome Structure (IAGS) framework, a novel block/endpoint matching optimization strategy with single-cut-or-join distance, to allow ancestral genome reconstruction under both simple (single-copy ancestor) and complex (multicopy ancestor) scenarios. We evaluated IAGS with two simulated data sets and applied it to four different real evolutionary scenarios to demonstrate its performance and general applicability. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a special pathological type of breast cancer (BC) with poor prognosis. Obesity is shown to be involved in TNBC tumor progression. The interaction between obesity and BC has generated great attention in recent years, however, the mechanism is still unclear. Here, we showed that leptin secreted by adipocytes upregulated PD-L1 expression in TNBC through the p-STAT3 signaling pathway and that baicalein inhibited PD-L1 expression in tumor microenvironment by suppressing leptin transcription of adipocytes. Collectively, our findings suggest that leptin may be the key factor participating in obesity-related tumor progression and that baicalein can break through the dilemma to boost the anti-tumor immune response.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer brain metastases (BCBM) are the most fatal, with limited survival in all breast cancer distant metastases. These patients are deemed to be incurable. Thus, survival time is their foremost concern. However, there is a lack of accurate prediction models in the clinic. What's more, primary surgery for BCBM patients is still controversial. METHODS: The data used for analysis in this study was obtained from the SEER database (2010-2019). We made a COX regression analysis to identify prognostic factors of BCBM patients. Through cross-validation, we constructed XGBoost models to predict survival in patients with BCBM. Meanwhile, a BCBM cohort from our hospital was used to validate our models. We also investigated the prognosis of patients treated with surgery or not, using propensity score matching and K-M survival analysis. Our results were further validated by subgroup COX analysis in patients with different molecular subtypes. RESULTS: The XGBoost models we created had high precision and correctness, and they were the most accurate models to predict the survival of BCBM patients (6-month AUC = 0.824, 1-year AUC = 0.813, 2-year AUC = 0.800 and 3-year survival AUC = 0.803). Moreover, the models still exhibited good performance in an externally independent dataset (6-month: AUC = 0.820; 1-year: AUC = 0.732; 2-year: AUC = 0.795; 3-year: AUC = 0.936). Then we used Shiny-Web tool to make our models be easily used from website. Interestingly, we found that the BCBM patients with an annual income of over USD$70,000 had better BCSS (HR = 0.523, 95%CI 0.273-0.999, P < 0.05) than those with less than USD$40,000. The results showed that in all distant metastasis sites, only lung metastasis was an independent poor prognostic factor for patients with BCBM (OS: HR = 1.606, 95%CI 1.157-2.230, P < 0.01; BCSS: HR = 1.698, 95%CI 1.219-2.365, P < 0.01), while bone, liver, distant lymph nodes and other metastases were not. We also found that surgical treatment significantly improved both OS and BCSS in BCBM patients with the HER2 + molecular subtypes and was beneficial to OS of the HR-/HER2- subtype. In contrast, surgery could not help BCBM patients with HR + /HER2- subtype improve their prognosis (OS: HR = 0.887, 95%CI 0.608-1.293, P = 0.510; BCSS: HR = 0.909, 95%CI 0.604-1.368, P = 0.630). CONCLUSION: We analyzed the clinical features of BCBM patients and constructed 4 machine-learning prognostic models to predict their survival. Our validation results indicate that these models should be highly reproducible in patients with BCBM. We also identified potential prognostic factors for BCBM patients and suggested that primary surgery might improve the survival of BCBM patients with HER2 + and triple-negative subtypes.

Valerolactam is a monomer used to manufacture high-value nylon-5 and nylon-6,5. However, the biological production of valerolactam has been limited by the inadequate efficiency of enzymes to cyclize 5-aminovaleric acid to produce valerolactam. In this study, we engineered Corynebacterium glutamicum with a valerolactam biosynthetic pathway consisting of DavAB from Pseudomonas putida to convert L-lysine to 5-aminovaleric acid and ß-alanine CoA transferase (Act) from Clostridium propionicum to produce valerolactam from 5-aminovaleric acid. Most of the L-lysine was converted into 5-aminovaleric acid, but promoter optimization and increasing the copy number of Act were insufficient to significantly improve the titer of valerolactam. To eliminate the bottleneck at Act, we designed a dynamic upregulation system (a positive feedback loop based on the valerolactam biosensor ChnR/Pb). We used laboratory evolution to engineer ChnR/Pb to have higher sensitivity and a higher dynamic output range, and the engineered ChnR-B1/Pb-E1 system was used to overexpress the rate-limiting enzymes (Act/ORF26/CaiC) that cyclize 5-aminovaleric acid into valerolactam. In glucose fed-batch culture, we obtained 12.33 g/L valerolactam from the dynamic upregulation of Act, 11.88 g/L using ORF26, and 12.15 g/L using CaiC. Our engineered biosensor (ChnR-B1/Pb-E1 system) was also sensitive to 0.01-100 mM caprolactam, which suggests that this dynamic upregulation system can be used to enhance caprolactam biosynthesis in the future.

Fungi-mediated synthesis of Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has advantages in: high efficiency, low energy consumption, no need for extra capping and stabilizing agents, simple operation, and easy isolation and purification. Many fungi have been found to synthesize AuNPs inside cells or outside cells, providing different composition and properties of particles when different fungi species or reaction conditions are used. This is good to produce AuNPs with different properties, but may cause challenges to precisely control the particle shape, size, and activities. Besides, low concentrations of substrate and fungal biomass are needed to synthesize small-size particles, limiting the yield of AuNPs in a large scale. To find clues for the development methods to solve these challenges, the reported mechanisms of the fungi-mediated synthesis of AuNPs were summarized. The mechanisms of intracellular AuNPs synthesis are dependent on gold ions absorption by the fungal cell wall via proteins, polysaccharides, or electric absorption, and the reduction of gold ions via enzymes, proteins, and other cytoplasmic redox mediators in the cytoplasm or cell wall. The extracellular synthesis of AuNPs is mainly due to the metabolites outside fungal cells, including proteins, peptides, enzymes, and phenolic metabolites. These mechanisms cause the great diversity of the produced AuNPs in functional groups, element composition, shapes, sizes, and properties. Many methods have been developed to improve the synthesis efficiency by changing: chloroauric acid concentrations, reaction temperature, pH, fungal mass, and reaction time. However, future studies are still required to precisely control the: shape, size, composition, and properties of fungal AuNPs.

Depression is a common emotional and mental disease. At present, doctors' diagnosis mainly depends on the existing evaluation scales and their accumulated experience, lack of objective electrophysiological quantitative evaluation indicators. This study explores the difference in event-related potential (ERP) between patients with depression and healthy controls under the stimulation of multi-dimensional tasks, extracts the characteristic data, and uses a t-test for statistical analysis to provide an objective evaluation index for the clinical diagnosis of depression. Ninety-nine patients in the major depression group (MDD) and thirty patients in the healthy control group (HC) were used to compare the responses to positive, negative, and neutral stimulation, the results showed that there were significant differences between the left and right occipital lobes and one frontal lobe, and the frontal lobe showed lateralization; There were significant differences between the depression group and the healthy control group under multi-dimensional stimulation (P < 0.01), and the depression patients were significantly lower than the healthy patients. The results showed that emotional information was processed differently in patients with depression in the early stages of visual face processing. Therefore, EEG indices could be used as an objective index for the early detection of depression. Moreover, according to the instructions before the test, the subject is only asked to recognize visual pictures instead report emotional feelings. Stigma about psychiatric disorders could thus be reduced in this way. The explorations above facilitate designing more accurate and implicit active mental health techniques.

A 12-year-old female presented with weight gain, edema, and shortness of breath. Laboratory and urine studies confirmed nephrotic syndrome and presence of a mediastinal mass, identified as a mature teratoma after resection. Nephrotic syndrome persisted despite resection and renal biopsy confirmed minimal change disease, which ultimately responded to steroid treatment. She had two relapses of nephrotic syndrome after vaccination administration, both of which occurred within eight months of tumor resection and were responsive to steroids. Autoimmune and infectious workup for other causes of nephrotic syndrome was negative. This is the first reported case of nephrotic syndrome associated with mediastinal teratoma.

AIMS: Copper ion is widespread in wastewater and threatens the condition and human health. Micro-organisms have unique advantages to remove heavy-metal ions from water, but are rarely reported in the removal of copper ion. This aims to develop micro-organisms that can remove copper ion in water, characterize their properties and analyse their potential application in practice. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sewage sludge was used as the source to isolate wild bacteria that can remove copper ion in water. The most efficient strain was screened out from 23 obtained isolates, identified as Bacillus pseudomycoides and coded as C6. The properties of C6 in the removal of copper ion in water were investigated in the aspects of reaction conditions, reaction groups, reaction dynamic and the application in oat planting. The reaction at pH 7 within 10 min yielded the highest removal rate of copper ion, 83%. The presence of lead ion in the reaction system could promote the removal rate of copper ion. Carboxyl groups and amidogen of C6 biomass were mainly involved in the removal of copper ion. The removal of copper ion was in accord with single-layer adsorption and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. In application, C6 biomass reduced the copper content in the oat seedlings grown in copper ion containing water by more than seven times. CONCLUSIONS: B. pseudomycoides C6 can efficiently remove copper ion in water and inhibit it from entering plants. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: This is the first time to report the capability of B. pseudomycoides to remove copper ion in water, which is also more efficient than the currently reported chemical and biological methods.

Candida albicans (C. albicans) is a fungal pathogen that is difficult to cure clinically due to lack of effective antifungal agents with low toxicity. In this study, iturin, a cyclic peptide having wide antifungal spectrum, was used to synthesize nanosilver particles (AgNPs), and a complex of iturin-AgNPs was formed. The antifungal activity of iturin-AgNPs against C. albicans and its mechanisms were tested in vitro. Iturin-AgNPs were also loaded in chitosan (CS) composite dressing and applied to skin wound healing in mice. As results, iturin-AgNPs showed excellent antifungal activity with the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 1.25, 2.5, and 5 µg/mL at C. albicans concentrations of 1×105, 1×106, and 1×107 CFU/mL, respectively. The MIC value still kept at 2.5 µg/mL against C. albicans (105 CFU/mL) after 15 regeneration, showing less induction of drug resistance to the pathogenic fungus. The antifungal mechanisms of iturin-AgNPs against C. albicans were identified as the increase of membrane permeability, damage of cell membrane integrity, and leakage of cellular protein and nucleic acids. No toxicity was found for iturin-AgNPs to HaCaT cells at concentrations of lower than 10 µg/mL. In wound healing application, iturin-AgNP CS composite dressing significantly accelerated the healing of C. albicans infected skin wounds at the early 10 days. In conclusion, iturin-AgNPs were developed as an efficient antifungal agent against C. albicans in vitro and in vivo and showed potential application in wound healing promotion.

We demonstrate the facile, rational synthesis of monodispersedly sized zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires from randomly sized seeds by hydrothermal growth. Uniformly shaped nanowire tips constructed in ammonia-dominated alkaline conditions serve as a foundation for the subsequent formation of the monodisperse nanowires. By precisely controlling the sharp tip formation and the nucleation, our method substantially narrows the distribution of ZnO nanowire diameters from σ = 13.5 nm down to σ = 1.3 nm and controls their diameter by a completely bottom-up method, even initiating from randomly sized seeds. The proposed concept of sharp tip based monodisperse nanowires growth can be applied to the growth of diverse metal oxide nanowires and thus paves the way for bottom-up grown metal oxide nanowires-integrated nanodevices with a reliable performance.

Recurrent outbreaks of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have occurred in many countries around the world. We developed a twofold framework in this study, which is composed by one novel descriptive model to depict the recurrent global outbreaks of COVID-19 and one dynamic model to understand the intrinsic mechanisms of recurrent outbreaks. We used publicly available data of cumulative infected cases from 1 January 2020 to 2 January 2021 in 30 provinces in China and 43 other countries around the world for model validation and further analyses. These time series data could be well fitted by the new descriptive model. Through this quantitative approach, we discovered two main mechanisms that strongly correlate with the extent of the recurrent outbreak: the sudden increase in cases imported from overseas and the relaxation of local government epidemic prevention policies. The compartmental dynamical model (Susceptible, Exposed, Infectious, Dead and Recovered (SEIDR) Model) could reproduce the obvious recurrent outbreak of the epidemics and showed that both imported infected cases and the relaxation of government policies have a causal effect on the emergence of a new wave of outbreak, along with variations in the temperature index. Meanwhile, recurrent outbreaks affect consumer confidence and have a significant influence on GDP. These results support the necessity of policies such as travel bans, testing of people upon entry, and consistency of government prevention and control policies in avoiding future waves of epidemics and protecting economy.

PURPOSE: Anxiety disorder is one of the psychiatric disorders that involves extreme fear or worry, which can change the balance of chemicals in the brain. To the best of our knowledge, the evaluation of anxiety state is still based on some subjective questionnaires and there is no objective standard assessment yet. Unlike other methods, our approach focuses on study the neural changes to identify and classify the anxiety state using electroencephalography (EEG) signals. METHODS: We designed a closed neurofeedback experiment that contains three experimental stages to adjust subjects' mental state. The EEG resting state signal was recorded from thirty-four subjects in the first and third stages while EEG-based mindfulness recording was recorded in the second stage. At the end of each stage, the subjects were asked to fill a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). According to their VAS score, the subjects were classified into three groups: non-anxiety, moderate or severe anxiety groups. RESULTS: After processing the EEG data of each group, support vector machine (SVM) classifiers were able to classify and identify two mental states (non-anxiety and anxiety) using the Power Spectral Density (PSD) as patterns. The highest classification accuracies using Gaussian kernel function and polynomial kernel function are 92.48 ±  1.20% and 88.60  ±  1.32%, respectively. The highest average of the classification accuracies for healthy subjects is 95.31 ±  1.97% and for anxiety subjects is 87.18 ±  3.51%. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that our proposed EEG neurofeedback-based classification approach is efficient for developing affective BCI system for detection and evaluation of anxiety disorder states.

Lipopeptides are a group of second metabolites of Bacillus and have multiple activities such as inhibiting fungi, bacteria, viruses, and tumors, showing a great potential application in agricultural and biomedical fields. However, low production severely restrained their application in practice. Deeply understanding the key elements of lipopeptide synthesis and the regulatory strategies is essential to target the improvement of lipopeptide production. The synthetic pathways of different lipopeptides are different, but closely and mutually interfered. The loading of fatty acid chains and the extension of peptide chains are two key steps for the synthesis of different lipopeptides by Bacillus. The selection of fatty acid chains, the loading order of amino acids, and the recognition of the final cyclization site are the critical steps to determine the end products of different lipopeptides. In order to find the key elements for precisely directing the formation of different lipopeptides by Bacillus, the key structural elements and possible regulatory strategies that have been reported in the production of different lipopeptides, mainly surfactin, iturin, and fengycin by Bacillus, were summarized and compared. The possible ways to improve the production of different targeted lipopeptides were proposed. KEY POINTS: • The selectivity of fatty acids is determined by specific domains. • The COM domain and the PKS docking domain determine the order of amino acids. • The regulation patterns of different domains for lipopeptide synthesis are different. • The regulation of different lipopeptide products overlaps each other.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), known as a common endocrine disorder among females, plagues many PCOS patients. The current study aimed to explore the correlations of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) polymorphisms with the outcome of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) in PCOS patients. PCOS patients who underwent IVF-ET and patients with non-PCOS-related infertility were selected in the study. Correlations of SHBG rs6259 and rs727428 with the risk factors in PCOS were analyzed, followed by the evaluation of the effect of SHBG polymorphisms on the outcome of IVF-ET in PCOS patients. At last, unconditional logistic regression analysis was performed to study the risk factors for IVF-ET treatment outcome. Compared with SHBG rs6259 GG carriers, the incidence of PCOS was found to be elevated in SHBG rs6259 GA+AA carriers which indicated that the A allele was a risk factor for PCOS. Compared with SHBG rs6259 TT carriers, the number of retrieved oocytes and embryo as well as the fertility rate in SHBG rs6259 GA+AA carriers was found to be decreased, while the abortion rate, incidence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, transplant rejection rate, estradiol, and testosterone in serum, as well as testosterone in follicular fluid were elevated. The luteal hormone, serum testosterone, and progesterone and GA+AA genotype of rs6259 were the risk factors for IVF-ET treatment outcome. Taken together, the study showed that SHBG rs6259 polymorphisms might be correlated with the risk of PCOS and the outcome of IVF-ET treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate a radiomics nomogram for differentiating the malignant risk of gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs). METHODS: A total of 222 patients (primary cohort: n = 130, our centre; external validation cohort: n = 92, two other centres) with pathologically diagnosed GISTs were enrolled. A Relief algorithm was used to select the feature subset with the best distinguishing characteristics and to establish a radiomics model with a support vector machine (SVM) classifier for malignant risk differentiation. Determinant clinical characteristics and subjective CT features were assessed to separately construct a corresponding model. The models showing statistical significance in a multivariable logistic regression analysis were used to develop a nomogram. The diagnostic performance of these models was evaluated using ROC curves. Further calibration of the nomogram was evaluated by calibration curves. RESULTS: The generated radiomics model had an AUC value of 0.867 (95% CI 0.803-0.932) in the primary cohort and 0.847 (95% CI 0.765-0.930) in the external cohort. In the entire cohort, the AUCs for the radiomics model, subjective CT findings model, clinical index model and radiomics nomogram were 0.858 (95% CI 0.807-0.908), 0.774 (95% CI 0.713-0.835), 0.759 (95% CI 0.697-0.821) and 0.867 (95% CI 0.818-0.915), respectively. The nomogram showed good calibration. CONCLUSIONS: This radiomics nomogram predicted the malignant potential of GISTs with excellent accuracy and may be used as an effective tool to guide preoperative clinical decision-making. KEY POINTS: • CT-based radiomics model can differentiate low- and high-malignant-potential GISTs with satisfactory accuracy compared with subjective CT findings and clinical indexes. • Radiomics nomogram integrated with the radiomics signature, subjective CT findings and clinical indexes can achieve individualised risk prediction with improved diagnostic performance. • This study might provide significant and valuable background information for further studies such as response evaluation of neoadjuvant imatinib and recurrence risk prediction.

AIM: We aimed to investigate risk factors and current treatment effects in male breast cancer patients. METHODS: Kaplan-Meier plot, log-rank test, COX model, nomograms and propensity score matching were used. RESULTS: Among stage I-III patients, surgery was associated with better prognosis. In subgroup analysis, performing surgery and no radiation or chemotherapy led to worse prognosis in research group. Among stage IV patients, chemotherapy correlated with better prognosis and radiation led to better breast cancer-specific survival. In addition, brain and liver metastasis correlated with worse prognosis; and lung correlated with worse breast cancer-specific survival. CONCLUSION: For stage I-III patients, surgery and chemotherapy were recommended. And not applying radiation or chemotherapy could be carefully considered for ER(+) HER-2(-) patients. For stage IV patients, chemotherapy and radiation were commended.

Due to increasingly limited water resources, diminishing farmland acreage, and potentially negative effects of climate change, an urgent need exists to improve agricultural productivity to feed the ever-growing population. Plants interact with microorganisms at all trophic levels, adapting growth, developmental, and defense responses within a complicated network of community members. Endophytic fungi have been widely reported for their ability to aid in the defense of their host plants. Currently, many reports focus on the application of endophytic fungi with the capability to produce valuable bioactive molecules, while others focus on endophytic fungi as biocontrol agents. Plant responses upon endophytic fungi colonization are also good for the immune system of the plant. In this paper, the possible mechanisms between endophytic fungi and their hosts were reviewed. During long-term evolution, plants have acquired numerous beneficial strategies in response to endophytic fungi colonization. The interaction of endophytic fungi with plants modulates the relationship between plants and both biotic and abiotic stresses. It has previously been reported that this endophytic relationship confers additional defensive mechanisms on the modulation of the plant immune system, as the result of the manipulation of direct antimicrobial metabolites such as alkaloids to indirect phytohormones, jasmonic acid, or salicylic acid. Furthermore, plants have evolved to cope with combinations of stresses and experiments are required to address specific questions related to these multiple stresses. This review summarizes our current understanding of the intrinsic mechanism to better utilize these benefits for plant growth and disease resistance. It contributes new ideas to increase plant fitness and crop productivity.
