RESUMEN

The circadian system plays a pivotal role in facilitating the ability of crop plants to respond and adapt to fluctuations in their immediate environment effectively. Despite the increasing comprehension of PSEUDO-RESPONSE REGULATORs (PRRs) and their involvement in the regulation of diverse biological processes, including circadian rhythms, photoperiodic control of flowering, and responses to abiotic stress, the transcriptional networks associated with these factors in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) remain incompletely characterized. In this study, we provide empirical evidence highlighting the significance of GmPRR3b as a crucial mediator in regulating the circadian clock, drought stress response, and abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway in soybeans. A comprehensive analysis of DNA affinity purification sequencing and transcriptome data identified 795 putative target genes directly regulated by GmPRR3b. Among them, a total of 570 exhibited a significant correlation with the response to drought, and eight genes were involved in both the biosynthesis and signaling pathways of ABA. Notably, GmPRR3b played a pivotal role in the negative regulation of the drought response in soybeans by suppressing the expression of abscisic acid responsive element-binding factor 3 (GmABF3). Additionally, the overexpression of GmABF3 exhibited an increased ability to tolerate drought conditions, and it also restored the hypersensitive phenotype of the GmPRR3b overexpressor. Consistently, studies on the manipulation of GmPRR3b gene expression and genome editing in plants revealed contrasting reactions to drought stress. The findings of our study collectively provide compelling evidence that emphasizes the significant contribution of the GmPRR3b-GmABF3 module in enhancing drought tolerance in soybean plants. Moreover, the transcriptional network of GmPRR3b provides valuable insights into the intricate interactions between this gene and the fundamental biological processes associated with plant adaptation to diverse environmental conditions.

RESUMEN

MAIN CONCLUSION: Investigation the expression patterns of GmPT genes in response to various abiotic stresses and overexpression of GmPT11 in soybean hairy roots and Arabidopsis exhibited hypersensitivity to salt stress. Soybean is considered to be one of the significant oil crops globally, as it offers a diverse range of essential nutrients that contribute to human health. Salt stress seriously affects the yield of soybean through negative impacts on the growth, nodulation, reproduction, and other agronomy traits. The phosphate transporters 1(PHT1) subfamily, which is a part of the PHTs family in plants, is primarily found in the cell membrane and responsible for the uptake and transport of phosphorus. However, the role of GmPT (GmPT1-GmPT14) genes in response to salt stress has not been comprehensively studied. Here, we conducted a systematic analysis to ascertain the distribution and genomic duplications of GmPT genes, as well as their expression patterns in response to various abiotic stresses. Promoter analysis of GmPT genes revealed that six stress-related cis-elements were enriched in these genes. The overexpression of GmPT11 in soybean hairy roots and Arabidopsis exhibited hypersensitivity to salt stress, while no significant change was observed under low phosphate treatment, suggesting a crucial role in the response to salt stress. These findings provide novel insights into enhancing plant tolerance to salt stress.

RESUMEN

High emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) has caused CO2 levels to reach more than 400 ppm in air and led to a serious climate problem. In addition, in confined spaces such as submarines and aircraft, the CO2 concentration increase in the air caused by human respiration also affects human health. In order to protect the environment and human health, the search for high-performance adsorbents for carbon capture from high and low concentration gas is particularly important. Porous carbon materials, possessing the advantages of low cost and renewability, have set off a boom in the research of porous adsorbents, which have the opportunity to be utilized on a large scale for industrial carbon capture in the future. In this review, we summarize the recent research progress of porous carbons for carbon capture from flue gas and directly from air in the last five years, including activated carbon (AC), heteroatom-modified porous carbon, carbon molecular sieves (CMS), and other porous carbon materials, with a focus on the effects of temperature, water content, and gas flow rate of industrial flue gas on the performance of porous carbon adsorbents. We summarize the preparation strategies of various porous carbons and seek environmental friendly porous carbon materials preparation strategies under the premise of improving the CO2 adsorption capacity and selectivity of porous carbon adsorbents. Based on the effects of real industrial flue gas on adsorbents, we provide new ideas and evaluation methods for the development and preparation of porous carbon materials.

RESUMEN

Landfills are the final stage of urban wastes containing perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). PFASs in the landfill leachate may contaminate the surrounding groundwater. As major environmental pollutants, emerging PFASs have raised global concern. Besides the widely reported legacy PFASs, the distribution and potential toxic effects of numerous emerging PFASs remain unclear, and unknown PFASs still need discovery and characterization. This study proposed a comprehensive method for PFAS screening in leachate samples using suspect and nontarget analysis. A total of 48 PFASs from 10 classes were identified; nine novel PFASs including eight chloroperfluoropolyether carboxylates (Cl-PFPECAs) and bistriflimide (HNTf2) were reported for the first time in the leachate, where Cl-PFPECA-3,1 and Cl-PFPECA-2,2 were first reported in environmental media. Optimized molecular docking models were established for prioritizing the PFASs with potential activity against peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α and estrogen receptor α. Our results indicated that several emerging PFASs of N-methyl perfluoroalkyl sulfonamido acetic acids (N-MeFASAAs), n:3 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid (n:3 FTCA), and n:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (n:2 FTSA) have potential health risks that cannot be ignored.

RESUMEN

Heavy metal contamination of soil commonly accompanies problems around gold mine tailings ponds. Fully investigating the distribution characteristics of heavy metals and the survival strategies of dominant plants in contaminated soils is crucial for effective pollution management and remediation. This study aims to investigate the contamination characteristics, sources of heavy metals (As, Cd, Pb, Hg, Cu, Zn, Cr, and Ni) in soils around gold mine tailings ponds areas (JHH and WZ) and to clarify the form distribution of heavy metals (As, Cd, Pb, Hg) in contaminated plots as well as their accumulation and translocation in native dominant plants. The results of the study showed that the concentrations of As, Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn in soil exceeded the national limits at parts of the sampling sites in both study areas. The Nemerow pollution index showed that both study areas reached extreme high pollution levels. Spatial analysis showed that the main areas of contamination were concentrated around metallurgical plants and tailings ponds, with Cd exhibiting the most extensive area of contamination. In the JHH, As (74%), Cd (66%), Pb (77%), Zn (47%) were mainly from tailings releases, and Cu (52%) and Hg (51%) were mainly from gold ore smelting. In the WZ, As (42%), Cd (41%), Pb (73%), Cu (47%), and Zn (41%) were mainly from tailings releases. As, Cd, Pb, and Hg were mostly present in the residue state, and the proportion of water-soluble, ion-exchangeable, and carbonate-bound forms of Cd (19.93%) was significantly higher than that of other heavy metals. Artemisia L. and Amaranthus L. are the primary dominating plants, which exhibited superior accumulation of Cd compared to As, Pb, and Hg, and Artemisia L. demonstrated a robust translocation capacity for As, Pb, and Hg. Compared to the concentrations of other forms of soil heavy metals, the heavy metal content in Artemisia L correlates significantly better with the total soil heavy metal concentration. These results offer additional systematic data support and a deeper theoretical foundation to bolster pollution-control and ecological remediation efforts in mining areas.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Occurrence of chronic thromboembolic disease (CTED) after 3 or 6 months of standard and effective anticoagulation is not uncommon in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE). To date, there has been no scoring model for the prediction of CTED occurrence. METHODS: A Prediction Rule for CTED (PRC) was established in the establishment cohort (n=1,124) and then validated in the validation cohort (n=211). Both original and simplified versions of the PRC score were provided by using different scoring and cut-offs. RESULTS: The PRC score included 10 items: active cancer (3.641; 2.338-4.944; p<0.001), autoimmune diseases (2.218; 1.545-2.891; p=0.001), body mass index >30 kg/m2 (2.186; 1.573-2.799; p=0.001), chronic immobility (2.135; 1.741-2.529; p=0.001), D-dimer >2,000 ng/mL (1.618; 1.274-1.962; p=0.005), PE with deep vein thrombosis (3.199; 2.356-4.042; p<0.001), previous venous thromboembolism (VTE) history (5.268; 3.472-7.064; p<0.001), thromboembolism besides VTE (4.954; 3.150-6.758; p<0.001), thrombophilia (3.438; 2.573-4.303; p<0.001), and unprovoked VTE (2.227; 1.471-2.983; p=0.001). In the establishment cohort, the sensitivity, specificity, Youden index (YI), and C-index were 85.5%, 79.7%, 0.652, and 0.821 (0.732-0.909) when using the original PRC score, whereas they were 87.9%, 74.6%, 0.625, and 0.807 (0.718-0.897) when using the simplified one, respectively (Kappa coefficient 0.819, p-value of McNemar's test 0.786). In the validation cohort, the sensitivity, specificity, YI, and C-index were 86.3%, 76.3%, 0.626, and 0.815 (0.707-0.923) when using the original PRC score, whereas they were 85.0%, 78.6%, 0.636, and 0.818 (0.725-0.911) when using the simplified one, respectively (Kappa coefficient 0.912, p-value of McNemar's test 0.937); both were better than that of the DASH score (72.5%, 69.5%, 0.420, and 0.621 [0.532-0.710]). CONCLUSIONS: A prediction score for CTED occurrence, termed PRC, predicted the likelihood of CTED occurrence after 3 or 6 months of standard anticoagulation in hospitalised patients with a diagnosis of acute PE.

RESUMEN

With the growing emphasis on green chemistry and the ecological environment, researchers are increasingly paying attention to greening materials through the use of carbon-based solid acids. The diverse characteristics of carbon-based solid acids can be produced through different preparation conditions and modification methods. This paper presents a comprehensive summary of the current research progress on carbon-based solid acids, encompassing common carbonization methods, such as one-step, two-step, hydrothermal, and template methods. The composition of carbon source material may be the main factor affecting its carbonization method and carbonization temperature. Additionally, acidification types including sulfonating agent, phosphoric acid, heteropoly acid, and nitric acid are explored. Furthermore, the functions of carbon-based solid acids in esterification, hydrolysis, condensation, and alkylation are thoroughly analyzed. This study concludes by addressing the existing drawbacks and outlining potential future development prospects for carbon-based solid acids in the context of their important role in sustainable chemistry and environmental preservation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a solid phase extraction-ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the determination of six bisphenols(bisphenol S, bisphenol F, bisphenol A, 2, 2'-methylenediphenol, bisphenol AF, bisphenol AP) in urine. METHODS: After enzymolysis of urine sample, the target substances were quickly purified and extracted by WAX solid phase extraction column. On ACQUITY BEH C_(18) column(2.1 mm×100 mm, 1.7 µm), the mobile phase of water and methanol was used to separate. Finally, multi-reaction detection was carried out under electrospray negative ion scanning, and quantification was carried out by internal standard method. RESULTS: The correlation coefficients(r) of the target compounds were all more than 0.998 in the range of 0.1-50.0 ng/mL, the linearity was good, and the detection limits were all lower than 0.1 ng/mL. The recoveries of the three standard concentrations(0.5, 5.0 and 50.0 ng/mL) were all between 80% and 120%, and the relative standard deviation was less than 20%(n=5). The standard reference material was detected and the concentration was within the reference range. CONCLUSION: This method can be used to detect six bisphenols in urine quickly and accurately, is suitable for the trace analysis of bisphenol compounds in human urine.

RESUMEN

The ongoing climate change is predicted to induce more weather extremes such as frequent drought and high-intensity precipitation events, causing more severe drying-rewetting cycles in soil. However, it remains largely unknown how these changes will affect soil nitrogen (N)-cycling microbes and the emissions of potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2 O). Utilizing a field precipitation manipulation in a semi-arid grassland on the Loess Plateau, we examined how precipitation reduction (ca. -30%) influenced soil N2 O and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) emissions in field, and in a complementary lab-incubation with simulated drying-rewetting cycles. Results obtained showed that precipitation reduction stimulated plant root turnover and N-cycling processes, enhancing soil N2 O and CO2 emissions in field, particularly after each rainfall event. Also, high-resolution isotopic analyses revealed that field soil N2 O emissions primarily originated from nitrification process. The incubation experiment further showed that in field soils under precipitation reduction, drying-rewetting stimulated N mineralization and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in favor of genera Nitrosospira and Nitrosovibrio, increasing nitrification and N2 O emissions. These findings suggest that moderate precipitation reduction, accompanied with changes in drying-rewetting cycles under future precipitation scenarios, may enhance N cycling processes and soil N2 O emissions in semi-arid ecosystems, feeding positively back to the ongoing climate change.

RESUMEN

Hydrogen gas (H2) as a fuel has the advantages of high energy density (122 kJ g-1) and zero carbon emissions. To meet the growing demand for H2 in the future, green, efficient, and convenient production technologies must be developed. The Al-H2O reaction, which produces H2 by reacting aluminum (Al) with water (H2O), is considered a rapid method for producing H2. However, Al-H2O creates a protective oxide layer on the surface of Al, preventing the production of H2. In this study, we developed a simple method for forming Al-GaInSn alloy by brushing GaInSn-Al2O3 grease onto an Al plate to form an Al/GaInSn-Al2O3/Al sandwich structure. Al2O3 in the sample supports GaInSn, prevents the leakage of GaInSn, and promotes its penetration into the Al lattice to form Al-GaInSn alloy. By forming a liquid phase within the alloy, GaInSn increases the accessibility of Al to the reaction. As a result, the Al-GaInSn alloy can rapidly react with pure H2O to produce H2 at room temperature conditions, with yields as high as ∼93.2%. It was interesting to find that dye-polluted water (methyl orange) could be synchronically purified by the Al-H2O reaction at the same time.

RESUMEN

Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and its alternatives, including chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonates (Cl-PFESAs), are mainly detected per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in human samples such as milk. However, the mechanism of their blood to milk transfer was not well studied. Here, 145 paired maternal serum and human milk samples were analyzed for six PFOS isomers and Cl-PFESAs to evaluate the transfer efficiency from maternal serum to human milk (TEHM/MS). Besides physicochemical properties, this study for the first time evaluated the influencing effects of the primary components in human milk (carbohydrate, lipid, and protein) on TEHM/MS of PFAS. No significant association was observed between TEHM/MS and the albumin binding affinity of the compounds (p = 0.601), but TEHM/MS was significantly negatively correlated with the logarithmic octanol-water partition coefficients (r2 = 0.853, p = 0.001), the logarithmic membrane-water partition coefficients (r2 = 0.679, p = 0.012), and the carbohydrate contents in human milk. The effect of carbohydrate was further confirmed using in vitro tests. The negative associations between TEHM/MS and hydrophobicity, membrane passive permeability, and the carbohydrate content in human milk consistently indicated that passive diffusion through the paracellular route might be the main transfer pathway for PFOS and Cl-PFESAs from blood to milk in humans.

RESUMEN

Fluorinated liquid-crystal monomers (FLCMs) widely used in liquid crystal displays are considered to be a new generation of persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic contaminants. They have been widely detected in the environment. However, little is known about their occurrence in food and human dietary exposure until now. Herein, we provided an evaluation of dietary exposure and health risks of FLCMs in the Chinese adult population based on the fifth and sixth total diet studies (TDSs). The detection frequencies of FLCMs in the two surveys were 90.5 and 99.5%, with concentrations ranging from not detected ∼72.6 µg/kg wet weight (ww) and ND ∼74.7 µg/kg ww, respectively. All TDS samples contained the multiresidue of FLCMs. The mean estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of FLCMs were 172.86 and 163.10 ng/kg bw/day in the fifth and sixth TDS, respectively. Meats, vegetables, and cereals contributed the most to the EDI of FLCMs. According to the threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) method, the EDIs of 1-fluoro-4-[2-(4-propylphenyl)ethynyl]benzene (4.56 and 3.26 ng/kg bw/day) and 2-fluoro-4-[4'-propyl-1,1'-bi(cyclohexyl)-4-yl]phenyl trifluoromethyl ether (3.12 and 3.28 ng/kg bw/day) were above their TTC value (2.5 ng/kg bw/day), suggesting their potential health risk. This is the first comprehensive national dietary exposure assessment of FLCMs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The assessment of VTE likelihood with VTE risk scores is essential prior to imaging examinations during VTE diagnostic procedure. Little is known with respect to the disparity of predictive power for VTE diagnosis among VTE risk scores in guidelines for nonsurgical hospitalized patients with clinically suspected VTE. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed to compare the predictive power for VTE diagnosis among the Wells, Geneva, YEARS, PERC, Padua, and IMPROVE scores in the leading authoritative guidelines in nonsurgical hospitalized patients with suspected VTE. RESULTS: Among 3168 nonsurgical hospitalized patients with suspected VTE, VTE was finally excluded in 2733(86.3%) ones, whereas confirmed in 435(13.7%) ones. The sensitivity and specificity resulted from the Wells, Geneva, YEARS, PERC, Padua, and IMPROVE scores were (90.3%, 49.8%), (88.7%, 53.6%), (73.8%, 50.2%), (97.7%,16.9%), (80.9%, 44.0%), and (78.2%, 47.0%), respectively. The YI were 0.401, 0.423, 0.240, 0.146, 0.249, and 0.252 for the Wells, Geneva, YEARS, PERC, Padua, and IMPROVE scores, respectively. The C-index were 0.694(0.626-0.762), 0.697(0.623-0.772), 0.602(0.535-0.669), 0.569(0.486-0.652), 0.607(0.533-0.681), and 0.609(0.538-0.680) for the Wells, Geneva, YEARS, PERC, Padua, and IMPROVE scores, respectively. Consistency was significant in the pairwise comparison of Wells vs Geneva(Kappa 0.753, P = 0.565), YEARS vs Padua(Kappa 0.816, P = 0.565), YEARS vs IMPROVE(Kappa 0.771, P = 0.645), and Padua vs IMPROVE(Kappa 0.789, P = 0.812), whereas it did not present in the other pairs. The YI was improved to 0.304, 0.272, and 0.264 for the PERC(AUC 0.631[0.547-0.714], P = 0.006), Padua(AUC 0.613[0.527-0.700], P = 0.017), and IMPROVE(AUC 0.614[0.530-0.698], P = 0.016), with a revised cutoff of 5 or less, 6 or more, and 4 or more denoting the VTE-likely, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: For nonsurgical hospitalized patients with suspected VTE, the Geneva and Wells scores perform best, the PERC scores performs worst despite its significantly high sensitivity, whereas the others perform intermediately, albeit the absolute predictive power of all isolated scores are mediocre. The predictive power of the PERC, Padua, and IMPROVE scores are improved with revised cutoffs.

RESUMEN

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Especially, aromatic VOCs including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) are important indoor air pollutants. Developing highly efficient porous adsorbents with broad applicability remains a major challenge. In this study, a perchlorinated covalent-triazine framework (ClCTF-1-400) is prepared for adsorbing BTEX. ClCTF-1-400 is confirmed as a partially oxidized/chlorinated microporous covalent triazine framework through a variety of characterization. It is found that ClCTF-1-400 is reversible VOCs absorbent with very high absorption capacities, which can adsorb benzene (693 mg g-1 ), toluene (621 mg g-1 ), ethylbenzene (603 mg g-1 ), o-xylene (500 mg g-1 ), m-xylene (538 mg g-1 ), and p-xylene (592 mg g-1 ) at 25 °C and their saturated vapor pressure (≈ 1 kPa). ClCTF-1-400 is of higher adsorption capacities for all selected VOCs than activated carbon and other reported adsorbents. The adsorption mechanism is also inferred through theoretical calculation and in-site Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The observed excellent BTEX adsorption performance is attributed to the multiple weak interactions between the ClCTF-1-400 frameworks and aromatic molecules through multiple weak interactions (CH… π and CCl… π). The breakthrough experiment demonstrates ClCTF-1-400 has the potential for real VOCs pollutant removal in air.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Compared with a lower neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio(NLR), a higher one denotes severe asthma exacerbation in hospitalized asthmatic children. In addition, NLR is significantly higher in pediatric patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) than those without. Nevertheless, its role in pediatric patients with concomitant asthmatic exacerbation and CAP remains unknown. METHODS: In this retrospective study including 1032 pediatric patients aged 5 to 14 years old, the diagnostic and prognostic value of NLR in children with concomitant asthmatic exacerbation and non-severe CAP were investigated. RESULTS: The sensitivity and specificity of NLR for a diagnosis of CAP in patients with asthmatic exacerbation were 56.9% and 90.1%, respectively. The cutoff value of NLR for a diagnosis of CAP in patients with asthmatic exacerbation was 4.15 (P < 0.001). The cumulative asthmatic exacerbation during 3-month followup of patients with high NLR were 23 (21.3%) and 58 (42.0%) in the asthma and asthmatic CAP groups, respectively (P < 0.001). The patients with high NLR who had unimproved CAP were 15 (8.3%) and 23 (12.2%) in the CAP and asthmatic CAP groups, respectively (P = 0.006). Multivariate analyses showed that along with the increase of NLR by 1.0 point, the HR for the occurrence of asthmatic exacerbation and unimproved CAP were 2.91 [1.83-3.96] (P = 0.001) and 3.38 [1.66-5.10] (P < 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: NLR had high and moderate diagnostic value for the exclusion and indication of CAP, respectively, in pediatric patients with asthmatic exacerbation. It also had prognostic value for the outcomes of pediatric patients with concomitant asthmatic exacerbation and CAP.

RESUMEN

Lithium-air batteries (LABs) have attracted extensive attention due to their ultra-high energy density. At present, most LABs are operated in pure oxygen (O2) since carbon dioxide (CO2) under ambient air will participate in the battery reaction and generate an irreversible by-product of lithium carbonate (Li2CO3), which will seriously affect the performance of the battery. Here, to solve this problem, we propose to prepare a CO2 capture membrane (CCM) by loading activated carbon encapsulated with lithium hydroxide (LiOH@AC) onto activated carbon fiber felt (ACFF). The effect of the LiOH@AC loading amount on ACFF has been carefully investigated, and CCM has an ultra-high CO2 adsorption performance (137 cm3 g-1) and excellent O2 transmission performance by loading 80 wt% LiOH@AC onto ACFF. The optimized CCM is further applied as a paster on the outside of the LAB. As a result, the specific capacity performance of LAB displays a sharp increase from 27,948 to 36,252 mAh g-1, and the cycle time is extended from 220 h to 310 h operating in a 4% CO2 concentration environment. The concept of carbon capture paster opens a simple and direct way for LABs operating in the atmosphere.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of human exposure to a mixture of 11 endocrine disruptors(EDCs) with the risk of papillary thyroid cancer(PTC), and to identify the priority of these EDCs. METHODS: EDCs were determined in fasting urine specimens to represent human exposure. Logistics regressions were performed to examine the associations between individual EDC and PTC risk. Bayes kernel machine regression was applied to examine the associations between the mixture of EDCs and PTC risk. Weighted quantile sum(WQS) regression and LASSO regression were performed to identify the main contributor. RESULTS: In the multivariate logistic regression model, after adjusting for a series of variables, 11 endocrine disruptors were statistically significantly correlated with the risk of PTC(P<0.05). In BKMR models, the mixture of EDCs was positively correlated with the risk of PTC(P<0.05). The weight and coefficient of mono(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate(MEHHP) was 0.62 and 1.58 in WQS and LASSO models, respectively, which were much higher than those of the other EDCs. CONCLUSION: Combined exposure to o a variety of EDCs might promote the risk of PTC, and MEHHP was identified as the main contributor.

RESUMEN

Exposure to endocrine disruptors (EDCs) could disrupt thyroid hormone homeostasis. However, human epidemiological studies reported inconsistent observations, and scarce information on the effect of a mixture of chemicals. The aim of the present study was to examine the associations of multiple chemicals with thyroid hormones among adults from China. We measured serum levels of thyroid hormones and urinary levels of 11 EDCs, including six phthalate metabolites, bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol S (BPS), perchlorate, and thiocyanate among 177 healthy adults without occupational exposure. Associations of multiple urinary analytes with serum thyroid hormones were examined by performing general linear regression analysis and bayesian kernal machine regression analysis. These EDCs were detected in almost all samples. After adjusting for various covariates, we observed only BPF significantly associated with total thyroxin (TT4) (ß=-0.27, 95% confidence interval (CI) [-0.41, -0.14]), total triiodothyronine (TT3) (ß=-0.02 95% CI [-0.03, -0.01]), free T4 (fT4) (ß=-0.02, 95% CI [-0.03, -0.01]), and free T3 (fT3) (ß=-0.04, 95% CI [-0.07, -0.01]), and mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEOHP) and monoethyl phthalate (MEP) positively associated with TT4 (ß=0.24, 95% CI [0.01, 0.48]) and fT4 (ß=0.02, 95% CI [0.01, 0.04]), respectively. Moreover, we observed significant dose-response relationships between TT4 and the mixture of 11 EDCs, and BPF was the main contributor to the mixture effect, suggesting the priority of potential effect of BPF on disrupting thyroid function under a real scenario of human exposure to multiple EDCs. Our findings supported the hypothesis that human exposure to low levels of EDCs could alter thyroid hormones homeostasis among non-occupational healthy adults.

RESUMEN

In human biomonitoring, a high-throughput extraction and enrichment method for multiple types of organic contaminants at the part-per-trillion level is critical yet challenging, especially in the limited sample volume. When large-scale sample analysis is involved, low cost is often what we should consider. We describe a generic and straightforward cold-induced liquid-liquid extraction (CI-LLE) strategy to meet this need. Current methods for extracting and enriching organic contaminants from biological samples often require multistep sample processing, including specially tailoring the extraction solvent or adsorbents. This method uses cold-induced phase separation to achieve the extraction and enrichment of studied organic contaminants by adjusting the proportion of acetonitrile/water mixture, so as to integrate the extraction and enrichment in one step without additional reagents and adsorbents. In this study, fipronil insecticide was used as a representative compound to determine the key parameters of CI-LLE. The optimized CI-LLE procedure allowed simultaneous extraction and enrichment of studied organic contaminants, providing excellent enrichment factors (especially for lipophilic organic contaminants). CI-LLE was further applied in monitoring early life exposures of fipronil in 109 breast milk samples. This study provided baseline data on fipronil levels in breast milk samples from China. For infants, exposure to fipronil is of concern. In summary, CI-LLE provides a feasible solution for a generic, efficient, and low-cost preparation of biological samples and promotes high-throughput batch analysis of organic contaminants for large-scale human biomonitoring.

RESUMEN

Oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion is one type of oily wastewater produced by many industries. The treatment of and resource recovery from O/W emulsions are very challenging. Unlike bulk or floating oil, which can be successfully abstracted from wastewater by hydrophobic/oleophilic materials, the abstraction of emulsified oil is not easy because of its highly hydrophilic surface composed of dense surfactants. Separate reclamation of miscible oil and surfactant through a green approach is even more difficult. Here, we report that a CO2-responsive material can abstract emulsified oil and demulsify the oil droplets. Moreover, it can release the abstracted oil and surfactant separately. This material exhibited a very high adsorption capacity for emulsified oil (14 g g-1). Upon switching the surface wettability of the material under CO2 or synthetic flue gas sparging, coalesced oil was reclaimed while the surfactant was retained inside the pores. The hydrophobic character of the material was retrieved when CO2 was purged with nitrogen sparging or air heating. Then, the surfactant was reclaimed by elution with diluted alkali/ethanol. Oil and surfactant were thus separately reclaimed from the O/W emulsion. High rates of oil removal, oil recovery, and surfactant recovery were maintained during repeated adsorption/desorption operations. This work provides a potentially sustainable and green way for O/W emulsion treatment and resource recovery.
