RESUMEN

Reversible three-electron redox of Cr3+ /Cr6+ in layered cathode materials for rechargeable batteries is very attractive in layered cathode materials, which leads to high capacity and energy density for rechargeable batteries. However, the poor reversibility and Cr-ion migration make it very challenging. In this work, by introducing V ions into tetrahedral sites of layer-structured NaCrO2 , reversible three-electron redox of Cr3+ /Cr6+ is realized successfully in NaCr0.92 V0.05 O2 (NCV05) cathode for potassium-ion batteries with a cut-off voltage of 4.0 V. V ions can weaken the attraction of Cr to electrons, leading to enhanced valence change of Cr ions. On the other hand, V in tetrahedral sites can facilitate the reversible migration of Cr between octahedral and tetrahedral sites via coulombic repulsion to realize the reversible redox between Cr3+ and Cr6+ during charge and discharge processes. In addition, V ions can inhibit the phase transition from O3 phase to O'3 phase during the charge process by adjusting the crystal lattices. As a result, the NaCr0.92 V0.05 O2 cathode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 130 mAh g-1 with promising cycle stability and rate capability. The strategy opens new opportunity for developing high-capacity cathode materials for potassium-ion batteries.

RESUMEN

Liver fibrosis is a chronic inflammatory process characterized by the accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM), which contributes to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Increasing evidence suggests that the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) under an inflammatory state leads to the secretion of collagens, which can cause cirrhosis. In this study, we analysed data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between quiescent and fibrotic HSCs. We found that Microfibril Associated Protein 2 (MFAP2) was elevated in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis and Transforming Growth Factor-Beta 1 (TGF-ß1)-activated HSCs. Knockdown of MFAP2 inhibited HSC proliferation and partially attenuated TGF-ß-stimulated fibrogenesis markers. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that Fibrillin-1 (FBN1) was correlated with MFAP2, and the expression of FBN1 was significantly upregulated after MFAP2 overexpression. Silencing MFAP2 partially attenuated the activation of HSCs by inhibiting HSC proliferation and decreasing collagen deposits. In vitro results showed that the inhibition of MFAP2 alleviated hepatic fibrosis by inhibiting the activation and inducing the apoptosis of active HSCs in a CCl4-induced mouse model. In conclusion, our results suggest that MFAP2 is a potential target for the clinical treatment of liver fibrosis.

RESUMEN

Stacking order plays a key role in defining the electrochemical behavior and structural stability of layer-structured cathode materials. However, the detailed effects of stacking order on anionic redox in layer-structured cathode materials have not been investigated specifically and are still unrevealed. Herein, two layered cathodes with the same chemical formula but different stacking orders: P2-Na0.75 Li0.2 Mn0.7 Cu0.1 O2 (P2-LMC) and P3-Na0.75 Li0.2 Mn0.7 Cu0.1 O2 (P3-LMC) are compared. It is found that P3 stacking order is beneficial to improve the oxygen redox reversibility compared with P2 stacking order. By using synchrotron hard and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopies, three redox couples of Cu2+ /Cu3+ , Mn3.5+ /Mn4+ , and O2- /O- are revealed to contribute charge compensation in P3 structure simultaneously, and two redox couples of Cu2+ /Cu3+ and O2- /O- are more reversible than those in P2-LMC due to the higher electronic densities in Cu 3d and O 2p orbitals in P3-LMC. In situ X-ray diffraction reveals that P3-LMC exhibits higher structural reversibility during charge and discharge than P2-LMC, even at 5C rate. As a result, P3-LMC delivers a high reversible capacity of 190.3 mAh g-1 and capacity retention of 125.7 mAh g-1 over 100 cycles. These findings provide new insight into oxygen-redox-involved layered cathode materials for SIBs.

RESUMEN

Aberrant expression of circRNAs is closely associated with the progression of gastric cancer; however, the specific mechanisms involved remain unclear. Our aim was to identify new gastric cancer biomarkers and explore the molecular mechanisms of gastric cancer progression. Therefore, we analyzed miRNA and circRNA microarrays of paired early-stage gastric cancer samples. Our study identified a new circRNA called hsa_circ_0069382, that had not been reported before and was expressed at low levels in gastric cancer tissues. Our study also included bioinformatics analyses which determined that the high expression of hsa_circ_0069382 regulated the BTG anti-proliferation factor 2 (BTG2)/ focal adhesion kinase (FAK) axis in gastric cancer lines by sponging for miR-15a-5p. Therefore, proliferation, invasion, and migration of gastric cancer is impacted. miR-15a-5p overexpression partially restored the effects of hsa_circ_0069382. This study provides potential new therapeutic options and a future direction to explore for gastric cancer treatment, and biomarkers.

RESUMEN

Anionic redox has been considered as a promising strategy to break the capacity limitation of cathode materials that solely relies on the intrinsic cationic redox in secondary batteries. Vacancy, as a kind of defect, can be introduced into transition metal layer to trigger oxygen redox, thus enhancing the energy density of layer-structured cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Herein, the formation process, recent progress in working mechanisms of triggering oxygen redox, as well as advanced characterization techniques for transition metal (TM) vacancy were overviewed and discussed. Strategies applied to stabilize the vacancy contained structures and harness the reversible oxygen redox were summarized. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects for further understanding TM vacancy were particularly emphasized.

RESUMEN

Ubiquitin binding enzyme E2S (UBE2S) is a member of ubiquitin binding enzyme family involved in a variety of biological functions, including cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, and regulation of the ubiquitination of proteins, which are closely correlated with the development of various tumors. However, its role in gastric cancer (GC) remains unknown. In this study, we found that UBE2S was upregulated in GC tissues and cells. Further, its high expression positively correlated with the tumor stage and indicated a poor prognosis. Knockout of UBE2S by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated strategy suppressed the growth of GC in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, RNA-Seq-based transcriptome analysis and tandem mass tag (TMT)-based quantitative proteomics analysis was performed for exploring the underlying mechanism. The multi-omics and verification results showed that UBE2S knockout-induced apoptosis and proliferation inhibition of GC cells was related to upregulation of FAS and the activation of the FAS-mediated apoptotic pathway. Moreover, a negative correlation between UBE2S and FAS expression was observed in GC tissue samples. Finally, the ubiquitination assay confirmed that knockout of UBE2S might activate endogenous FAS by inhibiting ubiquitination and degradation of p53 in GC cells. Collectively, UBE2S is expected to be a novel prognostic biomarker and potential therapeutic target for GC.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Dietary carotenoids have been proven to improve intestinal disorders like inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer, yet little is known about the link between dietary carotenoids and constipation. This study aims to examine the relationship between dietary carotenoids intake and constipation, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2010. METHODS: A total of 11,722 participants were enrolled. Chronic constipation was defined as type 1 (separate hard lumps, like nuts) and type 2 (sausage-like, but lumpy) in the Bristol stool form scale (BSFS). Carotenoids intake was obtained from the average of two 24-hour dietary recall questionnaires (if only one 24-hour was available, we used it) and divided into quartiles (Q). The prevalence of constipation was calculated across men and women individuals. The relationship between dietary carotenoids intake and constipation in men and women was assessed with weighted logistic regression and smoothed curve fitting after adjusting confounders, with results displayed as weighted odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). The model was further stratified by age, race, and HEI 2015 scores (with median as cutoff) among men and women. RESULTS: The total weighted prevalence of chronic constipation in this study was 8.08%, 11.11% in women and 5.18% in men. After multivariable adjustment, compared with the lowest intake, participants with the highest dietary lycopene intake (ORQ4 vs. Q1= 0.55, 95% CI: 0.36-0.84, p for trend = 0.01) and total lycopene intake (ORQ4 vs. Q1 = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.34-0.80, p for trend = 0.01) were negatively associated with the risk of chronic constipation in men, whereas increased dietary α-carotene intake reduced the risk of chronic constipation in women (ORQ4 vs. Q1 = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.48-0.98, p for trend = 0.04). Smoothing curve fitting further supported these results and provided evidence of dose-response effects. No association was found between other types of carotenoids and chronic constipation in men and women. CONCLUSIONS: Increasing lycopene intake may improve bowel function in men while increased α-carotene intake may reduce the risk of chronic constipation in women. Further studies are essential to explore the role that the intake of carotenoids plays in chronic constipation.

RESUMEN

Titanium-based anode materials have achieved much progress with the wide studies in lithium-ion batteries. However, these known materials usually possess high discharge voltage platforms and limited energy densities. Herein, a titanium-based oxide of Na2 TiGeO5 with layered structure, two-dimensional lamellar frame and exposed highly active (001) facet, exhibiting good electrochemical performance in terms of high capacity (410 mAh g-1 with a current density of 50 mA g-1 ), excellent rate capability and cycling stability with no obvious capacity attenuation after 4000 cycles, is reported. The appropriate discharge voltage plateau at around 0.2 V endows the Na2 TiGeO5 anode material high security compared with graphite and high energy density compared with spinel Li4 Ti5 O12 . Combining the electrochemical tests and the density functional theory calculations, the Li+ storage mechanism of Na2 TiGeO5 is elucidated and the conversion reaction process is revealed. More importantly, this study provides a way to develop low-voltage and high-capacity titanium-based anode materials for efficient energy storage.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The global burden of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is increasing, negatively impacting social health and economies. The discovery of novel and valuable biomarkers for the early diagnosis and therapeutic guidance of HCC is urgently needed. METHODS: Extracellular matrix (ECM)-related gene sets, transcriptome data and mutation profiles were downloaded from the Matrisome Project and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA)-LIHC datasets. Coexpression analysis was initially performed with the aim of identifying ECM-related lncRNAs (r > 0.4, p < 0.001). The screened lncRNAs were subjected to univariate analysis to obtain a series of prognosis-related lncRNA sets, which were incorporated into least absolute selection and shrinkage operator (LASSO) regression for signature establishment. Following the grouping of LIHC samples according to risk score, the correlations between the signature and clinicopathological, tumour immune infiltration, and mutational characteristics as well as therapeutic response were also analysed. lncRNA expression levels used for modelling were finally examined at the cellular and tissue levels by real-time PCR. All analyses were based on R software. RESULTS: AL031985.3 and MKLN1-AS were ultimately identified as signature-related lncRNAs, and both were significantly upregulated in HCC tissue samples and cell lines. The prognostic value of the signature reflected by the AUC value was superior to that of age, sex, grade and stage. Correlation analysis results demonstrated that high-risk groups exhibited significant enrichment of immune cells (DCs, macrophages and Tregs) and increased expression levels of all immune checkpoint genes. Prominent differences in clinicopathological profiles, immune functions, tumour mutation burden (TMB) and drug sensitivity were noted between the two risk groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our signature represents a valuable predictive tool in the prognostic management of HCC patients. Further validation of the mechanisms involved is needed.

RESUMEN

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common cancer types and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality among all malignant tumors worldwide. Due to insidious onset and lack of reliable early diagnostic markers, most GC patients are at an advanced stage at the time of diagnosis. Annexin is an evolutionally-conserved Ca2+-dependent phospholipid-binding protein superfamily, including five members (A, B, C, D, and E). Annexins in the cells of vertebrates comprised the annexin A family, consisting of 12 members in humans. The biological functions of annexin A are Ca2+-signal transduction, vesicle transport, cell proliferation, cell division, cell apoptosis, signal transduction, anti-inflammatory, proangiogenesis, and anticoagulation, most of which overlap with the basic characteristics of tumors. Accumulating evidence indicated that members of the annexin A family are correlated with tumorigenesis and chemoresistance and can be used as potential tumor prognostic factors and targets for biological therapy. Thus, the current review focused on the role and relative mechanisms of the annexin A family in GC.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Peptic ulcer disease is a common digestive system disease. However, whether peptic ulcer disease and obesity are related is unclear. We assessed the associations of obesity and metabolic status with peptic ulcer disease. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 3561 individuals from the Wuwei cohort. We evaluated the associations of general and abdominal adiposity, as defined by different anthropometric indices, with peptic ulcer disease. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were determined through binary logistic regression. RESULTS: The odds ratio for peptic ulcer disease was 2.37 (1.46-3.84) for women with obesity, compared with the normal group. The association remained significant in Models 2 and 3, with odds ratios of 2.23 (1.35-3.69) and 2.03 (1.19-3.49), respectively. In Model 1, women with obesity had an odds ratio for duodenal ulcer of 2.76 (1.41-5.42) compared with the control group; this result remained significant in Models 2 and 3, with odds ratios of 2.52 (1.24-5.13) and 2.44 (1.13-5.28), respectively. In Model 1, women with metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity had odds ratios for peptic ulcer disease of 2.26 (1.19-4.28) and 2.15 (1.12-4.15), respectively, compared with the control group. After adjustments for major covariates and H. pylori status, these respective odds ratios became 2.27 (1.20-4.30) and 2.17 (1.12-4.20) in Model 2 and 2.2 (1.15-4.20) and 2.16 (1.11-4.19) in Model 3. CONCLUSIONS: General adiposity defined by body mass index is associated with peptic ulcer disease in women.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection and risk factors and to serotype the strains in Wuwei, located in north-western China, which has a high incidence of gastric cancer. METHODS: Helicobacter pylori infection was analysed in 21 291 adults by 14 C-urea breath test, and H. pylori antibody were detected in 9183 serum samples by latex immunoturbidimetric method. The correlation of H. pylori infection with demographic-economic, lifestyle factors and medical history among the participants was determined by questionnaire. The antibodies against H. pylori urease, VacA and CagA in serum were determined by dot immunobinding assay. RESULTS: The infection rate of H. pylori was 53.0%, and 90.1% of strains were type I strains. The H. pylori infection rate was higher among farmers (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.19-1.50) and individuals who had a junior high school or higher education level (OR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.06-1.15), and was lower in older individuals (OR = 0.86, 95% CI: 0.83-0.90), individuals with high income (OR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.90-0.95), individuals with a habit of eating quickly (OR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.87-0.99) and individuals who consumed more fruit and vegetables (OR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.85-0.95). Individuals with history of cholecystitis/cholecystolithiasis, hypertension and asthma were negatively correlated with H. pylori infection (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of H. pylori infection is high in Wuwei. The major prevalent strain is type I strain. Age, education, occupation, household income, consumption of fruit and vegetables, and habit of eating quickly are independent risk factors for H. pylori infection, which is also associated with individuals with a history of extragastric diseases.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of Helicobacter pylori infection across all age groups in Wuwei City, a high-risk area for gastric cancer in Northwest China. METHODS: We conducted this study from 2016 to 2017 in an urban and a rural community in Wuwei City. Stool antigen tests targeted individuals aged 0 to 3 years old, and 13 C-urea breath tests targeted individuals aged above 3 years. We selected participants based on hierarchical cluster sampling. We assessed the association between variables and H. pylori infection based on logistic regression models. RESULTS: Ultimately, the results of 2,163 participants (age: 0 to 77 years old) were included (1,238 minors and 925 adults) in the analysis. The overall prevalence of H. pylori infection was 35.6%. It increased with age, reaching the peak in the 30 to 39 age group, and then began to decline. In multivariate analysis, age was positively associated with prevalence of H. pylori infection, and factors negatively associated with the prevalence were drinking running water, the frequency of yoghurt consumption, and an annual household income of Renminbi (¥) 30,000-100,000 or 100,000 above. In the subgroup analyses, however, the same variables associated differently in different age groups. Additionally, we interestingly noticed that boarding, eating at school cafeterias over six times per week, and frequently drinking untreated water were independent predictors of H. pylori infection in junior and senior high school students. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of H. pylori infection is moderate and closely associated with the socioeconomic conditions of Wuwei City, as well as the sanitary situations and dietary habits of the participants in the city. Boarding, eating at school, and drinking untreated water are the main factors explaining the rising infection rate in junior-senior high school students.

RESUMEN

Anionic redox is an effective way to boost the energy density of layer-structured metal-oxide cathodes for rechargeable batteries. However, inherent rigid nature of the TMO6 (TM: transition metals) subunits in the layered materials makes it hardly tolerate the inner strains induced by lattice glide, especially at high voltage. Herein, P2-Na0.8 Mg0.13 [Mn0.6 Co0.2 Mg0.07 □0.13 ]O2 (□: TM vacancy) is designed that contains vacancies in TM sites, and Mg ions in both TM and sodium sites. Vacancies make the rigid TMO6 octahedron become more asymmetric and flexible. Low valence Co2+ /Co3+ redox couple stabilizes the electronic structure, especially at the charged state. Mg2+ in sodium sites can tune the interlayer spacing against O-O electrostatic repulsion. Time-resolved in situ X-ray diffraction confirms that irreversible structure evolution is effectively suppressed during deep desodiation benefiting from the specific configuration. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that, deriving from the intrinsic vacancies, multiple local configurations of "□-O-□", "Na-O-□", "Mg-O-□" are superior in facilitating the oxygen redox for charge compensation than previously reported "Na-O-Mg". The resulted material delivers promising cycle stability and rate capability, with a long voltage plateau at 4.2 V contributed by oxygen, and can be well maintained even at high rates. The strategy will inspire new ideas in designing highly stable cathode materials with reversible anionic redox for sodium-ion batteries.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence implicates circular RNAs (circRNAs) in various biological processes during cancer progression. Gastric cancer is a main cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Herein, we aimed at investigating whether circ_002117 mediates gastric cancer progression through endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. METHODS: Bioinformatics analysis detected differentially expressed circRNAs and their target miRNA candidates, and RT-qPCR was performed to detect expression of circ_002117, microRNA (miRNA)-370 and HERPUD1 in gastric cancer tissues and cells. Gastric cancer cells were transfected with plasmids and their proliferative ability and apoptosis were detected with gain- and loss-of-function assay. The ER of treated cells was observed under a transmission electron microscope. Dual-luciferase reporter gene assay and RIP were performed to detect the interaction between HEPRUD1, miR-370 and circ_002117-treated cells were injected into mice to establish xenograft tumor model. RESULTS: Circ_002117 and HEPRUD1 were poorly expressed whereas miR-370 was highly expressed in clinical cancer tissues and cells. Circ_002117 was indicated to target and suppress miR-370 expression, while HERPUD1 was directly targeted by miR-370. Circ_002117 overexpression or miR-370 deficiency promoted ER stress-induced apoptosis and decreased proliferation of gastric cancer cells, which was reversed by silencing of HEPRUD1. Circ_002117 overexpression or miR-370 depletion significantly suppressed gastric cancer tumorigenesis in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Taken altogether, circ_002117 facilitated ER stress-induced apoptosis in gastric cancer by upregulating HERPUD1 through miR-370 inhibition.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most frequently diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Lack of prognostic indicators for patient survival hinders GC treatment and survival. METHODS AND RESULTS: Methylation profile data of patients with GC obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database were analyzed to identify methylation sites as biomarkers for GC prognosis. The cohort was divided into training and validation sets. Univariate Cox, LASSO regression, and multivariate Cox analyses revealed a close correlation of a four-DNA methylation signature as a risk score model with the overall survival of patients with GC. The survival between high-risk and low-risk score patients with GC was significantly different. Analyses of receiver operating characteristics revealed a high prognostic accuracy of the four-DNA methylation signature in patients with GC. The subgroup analysis indicated that the accuracy included that for anatomical region, histologic grade, TNM stage, pathological stage, and sex. The GC prognosis based on the four-DNA methylation signature was more precise than that based on known biomarkers. CONCLUSIONS: The four-DNA methylation signature could serve as a novel independent prognostic factor that could be an important tool to predict the prognostic outcome of GC patients. This potential must be verified in a large-scale population cohort study and through basic research studies.

RESUMEN

Amorphous iron phosphate (FePO4 ) has attracted enormous attention as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of its high theoretical specific capacity and superior electrochemical reversibility. Nevertheless, the low rate performance and rapid capacity decline seriously hamper its implementation in SIBs. Herein, we demonstrate a sagacious multi-step templating approach to skillfully craft amorphous FePO4 yolk-shell nanospheres with mesoporous nanoyolks supported inside the robust porous outer nanoshells. Their unique architecture and large surface area enable these amorphous FePO4 yolk-shell nanospheres to manifest remarkable sodium storage properties with high reversible capacity, outstanding rate performance, and ultralong cycle life.

RESUMEN

Gastric cancer has become the third most common cancer around the world. In patients with gastric cancer, the 5-year survival rate is still low. However, the mechanism underlying gastric cancer remains largely unknown. As a glycolytic enzyme, enolase 1 (ENO1) is widely expressed in most tissues. The functions of ENO1 have been reported in various types of cancer. Here in this study, we identified that ENO1 promoted the growth of gastric cancer cells through diverse mechanisms. Our immunohistochemical, bioinformatic and Western blot data showed that ENO1 was significantly overexpressed in human gastric cancer cell lines and tissues. The survival analysis revealed that ENO1 overexpression predicted poor survival in the patients suffering gastric cancer. Knockdown of ENO1 expression repressed the rate of proliferation and capacity of colony formation in two human gastric cancer cell lines (MGC-803 and MKN-45). In addition, knockdown of the expression of ENO1 led to the arrest of the cell cycle at the G1 phase and promoted the apoptosis of MKN-45 and MGC-803 cells. The further microarray and bioinformatic analysis revealed that ENO1 regulated the expression of diverse genes, many of which are involved in the progress of cancer. Taken together, our data demonstrated that ENO1 was an oncogene-like factor and might serve as a promising target for the treatment of human gastric cancer.

RESUMEN

Most P2-type layered oxides suffer from multiple voltage plateaus, due to Na+/vacancy-order superstructures caused by strong interplay between Na-Na electrostatic interactions and charge ordering in the transition metal layers. Here, Mg ions are successfully introduced into Na sites in addition to the conventional transition metal sites in P2-type Na0.7[Mn0.6Ni0.4]O2 as new cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Mg ions in the Na layer serve as "pillars" to stabilize the layered structure, especially for high-voltage charging, meanwhile Mg ions in the transition metal layer can destroy charge ordering. More importantly, Mg ion occupation in both sodium and transition metal layers will be able to create "Na-O-Mg" and "Mg-O-Mg" configurations in layered structures, resulting in ionic O 2p character, which allocates these O 2p states on top of those interacting with transition metals in the O-valence band, thus promoting reversible oxygen redox. This innovative design contributes smooth voltage profiles and high structural stability. Na0.7Mg0.05[Mn0.6Ni0.2Mg0.15]O2 exhibits superior electrochemical performance, especially good capacity retention at high current rate under a high cutoff voltage (4.2 V). A new P2 phase is formed after charge, rather than an O2 phase for the unsubstituted material. Besides, multiple intermediate phases are observed during high-rate charging. Na-ion transport kinetics are mainly affected by elemental-related redox couples and structural reorganization. These findings will open new opportunities for designing and optimizing layer-structured cathodes for sodium-ion batteries.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) is a non-invasive method for diagnosing hepatic steatosis. Despite good diagnostic performance, clinical application of CAP is limited due to the influences of covariates. Here, a systematic review on the performance of CAP in the diagnosis and staging of hepatic steatosis in NAFLD patients was performed. METHODS: The sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) and area under receiver operating characteristics (AUROC) curves of the pooled data for CAP in diagnosing and staging the mild (Stage 1), moderate (Stage 2) and severe (Stage 3) steatosis in NAFLD patients were assessed. The clinical utility of CAP was evaluated by Fagan plot. Heterogeneity was explored using subgroup analysis. RESULTS: Nine studies involving 1297 patients with liver biopsy-proven NAFLD were analyzed. The pooled sensitivity of CAP in detecting mild hepatic steatosis was 87% with a specificity of 91% and a DOR of 84.35. The pooled sensitivity of CAP in detecting moderate hepatic steatosis was 85% with a specificity of 74% and a DOR of 21.28. For severe steatosis, the pooled sensitivity was 76% with a specificity of 58% and a DOR of 4.70. The mean AUROC value for CAP in the diagnosis of mild, moderate, and severe steatosis was 0.96, 0.82 and 0.70, respectively. A subgroup analysis indicated that variation in the geographic regions, cutoffs, age and body mass index (BMI) could be the potential sources of heterogeneity in the diagnosis of moderate to severe steatosis. CONCLUSIONS: CAP should be cautiously considered as a non-invasive substitute for liver biopsy in clinical practice.
