BACKGROUND: Medical education can make it difficult for students to take actions to improve their health. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of the university context on self-care behaviors and quality of life. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was used, with surveys being combined to assess self-care and quality of life, with in-depth interviews to explore cultural influences and perceptions. Statistical analysis and qualitative data coding were carried out, with methods being integrated through network analysis. RESULTS: Self-care scores exceeded 50 points, and quality of life scores exceeded 60 points. Medical students' context is shaped by motivations, expectations, skills, and goals that influence identity formation and contribute to the medical profession. CONCLUSIONS: There is a positive connection between self-care practices and quality of life. However, academic stress can potentially disrupt self-care routines. Furthermore, an association between obesity and a decrease in quality of life stands out, which emphasizes the need for health promotion actions.


ANTECEDENTES: La educación médica puede dificultar que los estudiantes realicen acciones para mejorar su salud. OBJETIVO: Evaluar la influencia del contexto universitario en los comportamientos de autocuidado y la calidad de vida. ­. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se empleó un enfoque de métodos mixtos, combinando encuestas para evaluar el autocuidado y la calidad de vida, con entrevistas en profundidad para explorar influencias culturales y percepciones. Se llevaron a cabo análisis estadísticos y codificación de datos cualitativos; los métodos se integraron a través del análisis de redes. RESULTADOS: Las puntuaciones de autocuidado superaron los 50 puntos y las de calidad de vida, los 60 puntos. El contexto de los estudiantes de medicina está moldeado por motivaciones, expectativas, habilidades y metas que influyen en la formación de la identidad y contribuyen a la profesión médica. CONCLUSIONES: Existe una conexión positiva entre prácticas de autocuidado y la calidad de vida; sin embargo, el estrés académico pueden interrumpir potencialmente las rutinas de autocuidado. Además, se destaca la asociación entre la obesidad y la afectación en la calidad de vida, lo que enfatiza la necesidad de acciones de promoción de la salud.

INTRODUCTION: Medical students report higher levels of anxiety than students from other majors. Knowledge about their psychological well-being is scarce. OBJECTIVE: To identify sociodemographic and academic factors that predict the level of anxiety and psychological well-being in Mexican medical students. METHOD: Cross-sectional study of Mexican medical students of first (n = 59), third (n = 43) and fifth semester (n = 59), who answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, Beck Anxiety Inventory, the Psychological Well-being Scale for adults and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale. RESULTS: Females showed higher levels of anxiety (p < 0.01). Anxiety in males was similar in the different semesters (p > 0.05); women of third and fifth semesters were more anxious than those at first semester (p < 0.01). Anxiety and psychological well-being were negatively correlated (p < 0.001). The "Less anxiety, higher level of well-being" and "More anxiety, lower level of well-being" subgroups were characterized, and a logistic regression identified that being a woman (OR = 4.70) and not practicing any religion (OR = 2.49) are predictive factors of higher levels of anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: Female medical students constitute a population at risk for higher levels of anxiety and less psychological well-being, which compromises their learning, quality of life and future professional practice.


INTRODUCCIÓN: Estudiantes de medicina reportan mayor ansiedad que estudiantes de otras carreras. El conocimiento sobre su bienestar psicológico es escaso. OBJETIVO: Identificar factores sociodemográficos y académicos predictores del nivel de ansiedad y bienestar psicológico en estudiantes mexicanos de medicina. MÉTODO: Estudio transversal de estudiantes mexicanos de medicina de primer (n = 59), tercer (n = 43) y quinto semestre (n = 59), que contestaron un cuestionario sociodemográfico, la Escala de Ansiedad de Beck, la Escala de Bienestar Psicológico para Adultos y la Escala de Evaluación de la Cohesión y la Adaptabilidad Familiar. RESULTADOS: Las mujeres presentaron mayor ansiedad (p < 0.01). La ansiedad en hombres fue similar en los distintos semestres (p > 0.05); las mujeres de tercer y quinto semestre fueron más ansiosas que las del primero (p < 0.01). Ansiedad y bienestar psicológico correlacionaron negativamente (p < 0.001). Se identificaron los subgrupos "Menor ansiedad, mayor bienestar" y "Mayor ansiedad, menor bienestar", y una regresión logística identificó que ser mujer (OR = 4.70) y no profesar alguna religión (OR = 2.49) son factores predictores de mayor ansiedad. CONCLUSIONES: Las estudiantes de medicina constituyen una población de riesgo para mayor ansiedad y menor bienestar psicológico, lo que compromete su aprendizaje, calidad de vida y futuro ejercicio profesional.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Abdominal paracentesis is an area that every general physician should know about, and the current learning model is unsafe for patients. Simulation allows students to develop their skills prior to clinical confrontation with minimal risks. The aims of this study were to design and evaluate a paracentesis simulation workshop for undergraduate students. METHODS: A workshop was implemented using a specially designed and validated simulation model for abdominal paracentesis. The simulated technique considered the recognition of materials, operator equipment, asepsis, anesthesia, puncture and obtaining liquid, collecting samples for analysis, withdrawal of the material and occlusion. A 24-point direct observation checklist was administered to assess the student. We assessed two students at the beginning of the workshop and all the students at the end. A perception survey was applied to attendees at the end of the workshop. RESULTS: 247 students were included and a workshop that involved 8 students per session was held. Students significantly improved their skills comparing pre- and post-evaluation results [13.36±4.46 (55.7%) vs. 22.3±1.83 (92.9%) respectively (n=69) p<0.001]. The students' perception questionnaire (n=38) showed that the training sessions were highly valued, averaging 4.8±0.38 on a Likert scale of 1-5. CONCLUSIONS: Simulated training in abdominal paracentesis is a very good teaching method. This teaching methodology should be highly recommended as an educational strategy in medicine because it could accelerate the acquisition of clinical skills in a safe learning environment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a training program offered by family physicians in the official medical curriculum on principles and strategies to help patients change risk behaviours (HPCRB), produces changes in perceptions, opinions, and attitudes regarding this type of intervention. DESIGN: Quasi-experimental before-after study. SETTING: A School of Medicine. PARTICIPANTS: All students in their 4th year (n=110). INTERVENTIONS: Experiential training course on communicative strategies for HPCRB. MEASUREMENTS: Opinions and perceptions were evaluated before and after the course using an ad hoc survey. RESULTS: After the course, students (n=103) changed their ideas about motivation as an 'internal' (15, 13%) to 'internal-external' factor (71, 61%) (P=.003), reinforcing their opinions about the clinician's ability for HPCRB (high: 72, 62%; low: 10, 12%; P=.008). They considered themselves more capable to respect patient autonomy when they make decisions or follow harmful behaviours (easy: 58, 50%; difficult: 28, 24%; P=.001), and increased their perception of their ability to cope with this type of interview (83, 72% vs. 1, 1%; P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: This training course seems to contribute to creating positive perceptions and attitudes in students, as regards key aspects when conducting an interview for HPCRB. This is a key preliminary aspect to implement this type of strategy.

INTRODUCTION: Most pregnancies in adolescents and young adults are unwanted and many are the consequence of inconsistent contraception use. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the risk factors that may influence on female adolescents with unwanted pregnancies. METHOD: Cross-sectional, descriptive study in Ecuadorian female medical students, where the 2013 National Sexual and Reproductive Health Survey, the family APGAR scale, and the Graffar-Méndez Castellanos socio-economic scale were used. RESULTS: There was statistically significant difference in the age of active sexual life initiation between those who became pregnant (18.11 ± 1.45) and those who did not (19.22 ± 2.28). Average age at pregnancy was 20.41 ± 2.18; 59.3 % of those who had a pregnancy and 32% of those without pregnancy did not use protection in their first intercourse. Pregnancy was more common in city residents (100%), Catholic females (85.2%), who belonged to middle-high (55.6%) and middle-high socioeconomic strata (29.6%) and to families with moderate dysfunction (40.7%). CONCLUSIONS: A significant percentage of adolescents in our study had an unwanted pregnancy at an early age despite being young undergraduate medical students, coming from moderately dysfunctional families and belonging to a middle-high socioeconomic status.


INTRODUCCIÓN: La mayoría de los embarazos en adolescentes y adultos jóvenes son involuntarios y muchos son consecuencia del uso inconsistente de los métodos anticonceptivos. OBJETIVO: Analizar los factores de riesgo que pueden influir en las adolescentes que presentan embarazos no deseados. MÉTODO: Estudio descriptivo transversal en estudiantes de medicina de Ecuador, para el cual se utilizó la Encuesta Nacional de Salud Sexual y Reproductiva 2013, escala APGAR familia y escala socioeconómica de Graffar-Méndez Castellanos. RESULTADOS: Existió diferencia estadísticamente significativa en la edad de inicio de la vida sexual activa (18.11 ± 1.45) de las estudiantes que se embarazaron en comparación con las que no se embarazaron (19.22 ± 2.28). La edad promedio al embarazo fue de 20.41 ± 2.18); no usaron protección en su primera relación sexual, 59.3 % de las que tuvieron embarazo y 32 % de las que no lo tuvieron. El embarazo fue más frecuente en las residentes de ciudades (100 %), católicas (85.2 %), pertenecientes a estrato socioeconómico medio alto (55.6 %) y a familias con disfunción moderada (40.7 %). CONCLUSIONES: Un porcentaje importante de estudiantes de medicina tuvo algún embarazo no deseado a temprana edad; la mayoría procedía de familias con disfunción moderada y de un nivel socioeconómico medio alto.

Introduction: Physicians and medical students need to understand numerical and graphical health data in order to provide patients with correct information. Objective: The graphical and numerical skills of medical students and residents from a private university in Lima, Peru, were determined in this investigation. Method: Cross-sectional, descriptive study. The Objective Numeracy, Subjective Numeracy and Graph Literacy Scales were applied to medical students at their two final years of medical school and to medical residents. Results: Of 169 participants, 52.07% were sixth-year and 18.34% were seventh-year students and 29.58% were residents. Mean objective numeracy score was 7.34, mean subjective numeracy was 34.12 and mean graph literacy was 10.35. A multiple linear regression analysis showed that Subjective and Objective Numeracy Scales highest means were associated with the male gender and training on research methodology (p < 0.05). Graph Literacy Scale highest means were associated with the male gender and younger age (p-value < 0.05). Conclusion: Numeracy and Graph Literacy Scales mean scores were high in medical students.


Introducción: Los médicos y estudiantes de medicina necesitan comprender los datos numéricos y gráficos sobre salud para proveer información correcta a los pacientes. Objetivo: Determinar las habilidades gráficas y numéricas en estudiantes y residentes de medicina de una universidad privada de Lima, Perú. Método: Estudio descriptivo, transversal. Se aplicaron las escalas de Habilidad Numérica Objetiva, de Habilidad Numérica Subjetiva y de Habilidad Gráfica a estudiantes de medicina de los dos últimos años de la carrera de medicina y a residentes de medicina. Resultados: De 169 participantes, 52.07 % fueron estudiantes de sexto año, 18.34 % de séptimo y 29.58 % residentes. La media en la habilidad numérica objetiva fue de 7.34, en la subjetiva de 34.12 y en la habilidad gráfica de 10.35. De la regresión lineal múltiple se obtuvo que las medias más altas en las escalas de Habilidad Numérica Subjetiva y Objetiva estuvieron asociadas con el sexo masculino y la capacitación sobre metodología en investigación (p < 0.05). En la Escala de Habilidad Gráfica, las medias más altas estuvieron asociadas con el sexo masculino y menor edad (p < 0.05). Conclusión: Las medias de las escalas de Habilidad Gráfica y Habilidad Numérica en estudiantes de medicina fueron altas.

BACKGROUND: Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation (OSCE) is an excellent method to evaluate student's abilities, but there are no previous reports implementing it in dermatology. OBJECTIVES: To determine the feasibility of implementation of a dermatology OSCE in the medical school. METHODS: Five stations with standardized patients and image-based assessment were designed. A specific checklist was elaborated in each station with different items which evaluated one competency and were classified into five groups (medical history, physical examination, technical skills, case management and prevention). RESULTS: A total of 28 students were tested. Twenty-five of them (83.3%) passed the exam globally. Concerning each group of items tested: medical interrogation had a mean score of 71.0; physical examination had a mean score of 63.0; management had a mean score of 58.0; and prevention had a mean score of 58.0 points. The highest results were obtained in interpersonal skills items with 91.8 points. LIMITATIONS: Testing a small sample of voluntary students may hinder generalization of our study. CONCLUSIONS: OSCE is an useful tool for assessing clinical skills in dermatology and it is possible to carry it out. Our experience enhances that medical school curriculum needs to establish OSCE as an assessment tool in dermatology.

OBJECTIVE: Empathy is one of the basic skills in medicine that promotes better doctor-patient relationship, best professional competition and less professional stress. We don't found studies in our area. This study aims to measure the degree of empathy in medical students in our area and associated factors. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. LOCATION: Faculty of Medicine, University of Lleida (Spain). PARTICIPANTS: Pass in class of 1st, 3rd and second cycle of Medicine, at 191 students. 173 students (90%) completed the questionnaire. MAIN MEASUREMENTS: TECA questionnaire to measure general empathy with 4 subscales (empathic understanding, perspective taking, empathic happiness and empathic stress), and a sociodemographic questionnaire. RESULTS: We found a progression in empathy during medical courses. Women have greater empathy but also increased empathic stress. Men have less general empathy, less progression of empathy and less emphatic stress. Students that show a preference to House TV movie have less empathy and those with family doctors. Voluntary students have greater empathy and those who have had a sick friend. We don't have found relationship between empathy and preferred specialty. CONCLUSIONS: There are several variables that are related to empathy in medical students: Women, advanced courses, experiences close to serious illnesses and those involved in voluntary activities.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the exposure of medical students to the marketing activities of the pharmaceutical industry, and identify their opinions and attitudes, and also the possible effects this exposure on their training and future professional practice. DESIGN: Descriptive cross-sectional. SETTING: University of Zaragoza Faculty of Medicine. PARTICIPANTS: Third, fourth, fifth and sixth year medical students. METHODS: The information was obtained using a previously adapted, self-report questionnaire on the exposure, attitudes and perceived suitability of drug marketing activities. Percentages were calculated for the categorical variables, applying the chi squared test for the comparison between the groups. A logistic regression was performed to determine the factors associated with their attitudes towards these activities. RESULTS: A total of 369 questionnaires were returned (93% of those attending classes). The exposure to marketing activities is high, particularly in the clinical stage (78.6% said to have received a gift non-educational gift). The students recognised the possible biases and repercussions in professional practice, although with ambiguity and contradictions. The most accepted activities are those associated with training, and the most critical attitudes appear in the clinical stage, particularly in the sixth year. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to drug marketing by medical students and its possible training and professional effects is frequent and significant. The training environment is particularly open to promotional activities. The differences observed in the later years suggest the need for a specific curriculum subject and development of reflective attitudes by the students themselves.

INTRODUCTION: Since the number of applicants to residencies in general surgery in Argentina seems to be decreasing, we designed this work with the objective of studying the factors considered undesirable by students when choosing surgery as a specialty. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between March and April 2012, one-hundred students were surveyed with a structured questionnaire with true/false binary answers in an observational case-control design. The survey contained 26 statements that made reference to characteristics of surgery as a specialty, or about the personality and lifestyle of surgeons, as they could be perceived by students. As a control group the same survey was applied to 20 surgeons who were in contact with the students and that could represent a role model for them during their rotation in surgery. RESULTS: Comparison between students and surgeons showed no difference in most answers, except in «surgery has poor reimbursement¼ (OR: 8,9; P=.0001), «there is not enough job demand¼ (OR: 8,1; P=.015), «surgery restrains intellectual development¼ (OR: 17,5; P=.014), «surgeons have too many non-scheduled activities¼ (OR: 9,36; P=.024), «they have a limited patient-physician relationship¼ (OR: 3,61; P=.009), «they have little time for family¼ (OR: 4,27; P=.036) and «they are exposed to infectious diseases¼ (OR: 5,90; P=.007). CONCLUSIONS: Women would be as interested as men in working as surgeons; a remarkable fact when considering that the surgical specialties have been predominantly filled by men. The fact that surgeons mostly coincide with the views of students means that role models should be reviewed to promote vocations.

INTRODUCTION: The prolongation and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to an uncertain and devastating panorama in many populations, and the evidence shows a high prevalence of mental health problems in medical students. The objective was to evaluate the association between mood disorders and sleep quality (SQ) in Peruvian medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 310 medical students from a private university in Peru. The SQ was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while mood disorders were evaluated using the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). All information was collected by online surveys and then analysed in the R programming language. RESULTS: The SQ results measured by PSQI were poor in 83.9% of the medical students. In the Poison regression analysis, the results of the bivariate analysis in men show that all mood disorders found the prevalence of poor SQ. However, in the multivariate analysis only stress (PRa=1.30; 95% CI, 1.08-1.57; P<0.01) and anxiety (PRa=1.34; 95% CI, 1.09-1.56; P <0.01) increased the prevalence of poor SQ. Women had a similar pattern in bivariate analysis, whereas in multivariate analysis, only severe stress (PRa=1.15; 95% CI, 1.01-1.29; P <0.05) increased the prevalence of poor SQ. CONCLUSIONS: This study allows us to observe the consequences that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on medical students in Peru. It also revealed a population group vulnerable to poor quality of sleep and bad mood, which in the future will impact on health. It is suggested to educate medical students about the importance of proper sleep hygiene and the consequences of poor sleep hygiene practices.

RESUMEN

University Radiology training has been carried out for years out of the Radiology Departments, where radiologists play their professional role. However, the educational needs and the leadership of the Scientific Societies make the Radiology Departments to be involved more and more in that training, though it has to be done in overloaded professional environments where medical students can be seen as a drawback. Nevertheless, radiologists must play an important role in the Radiology training of the future doctors for optimising the use of diagnostic imaging techniques and enhance the future of the specialty by bringing to our Departments those medical students who had demonstrated the most adequate personal profiles. The Radiology Department is that place to succeed by increasing the healthcare outcomes, the research results and the visibility of Radiology through a fruitful interaction between radiologists and medical students.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse a problem-based learning experience (PBL) in the sixth year of medicine, within a course organised in successive rotations of 12 school days for 7 annual groups. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Each group was divided into subgroups of 6-8 students. Each subgroup was assigned two cases with radiographic images that they had to prepare and present in a joint session in which the students discussed each case and the teacher acted as moderator, without providing solutions. Finally, they had 15 days to complete the debate in an online forum and prepare a written report on each case. RESULTS: During 6 consecutive years, 1001 students participated, whose annual grades ranged between 7.7 ±â€¯1.6 and 9.0 ±â€¯0.7 (mean ±â€¯standard deviation). No correlation was found between the degree of difficulty assigned to the cases and the mean score obtained by each group (R2 = 0.0115). Sixty-six point two percent completed a questionnaire rating various aspects of this experience above 4 out of 5 points and providing overall scores above 8.3 out of 10 points in the different years. The students found this experience appropriate to the objectives of the subject and useful for their educational needs. CONCLUSIONS: PBL allows students to acquire skills of understanding, reasoning and deepening in radiological diagnosis. This study demonstrates that an experience based on PBL can be included in a radiology course organised in a traditional way, allowing students to be graded regardless of the difficulty of the cases.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus is the main pathogen causing nosocomial infections. Health professionals, including medical students, could be a source of transmission. The aims of the study were to determine the rate of nasal carriage of S.aureus susceptible and resistant to methicillin (MRSA) and evaluate the knowledge and adherence that students had about hand hygiene. METHODS: The study included medical students attached to the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre (Madrid, Spain). We collected samples from both nasal vestibules, and the antimicrobial susceptibility was determined on all isolates. Data collection was performed using a self-administered questionnaire that included risk factors for colonization, hygiene habits and knowledge of hand hygiene protocols. RESULTS: Of the 140 students included, 55 (39.3%) were colonized by S.aureus, and 3 (2,1%) by MRSA. The exposure to antibiotics in the last 3 months was lower in colonized students (12.3% vs. 25.9%, P=.03). Self-assessment showed that 56.4% of students almost never washed their hands before to attending to the first patient, and only 38.6% always washed after examining patients. More than a third (35.7%) ignored the hand hygiene protocol, and 38.6% had not received specific formation. CONCLUSIONS: Medical students should be included in hospital infection control programs. Hand hygiene training should be given to students before they begin their practices in the hospital.

INTRODUCTION: The evidence regarding the effects of the Inverted Classroom on students' metacognitive skills is limited. This study evaluates these effects on student perceptions about knowledge and cognitive regulation during a surgical course. METHODS: We measured student perceptions before and after a conventional Inverted Classroom in surgery using the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory. We evaluated the mean differences between the scores of the two measurements using Student's t-test (p < 0.05), and the size of the effect on knowledge and cognitive regulation using Cohen's d test (95%CI). RESULTS: A total of 158 students (pre-intervention) and 155 students (post-intervention) were included in the analysis. Significant differences were found (p < 0.05) in, as well as positive effects on, the students' abilities to know their own learning (declarative knowledge) (d = 0.24; 95%CI, 0.02-0.47), to use learning strategies (procedural knowledge) (d = 0.19; 95%CI, -0.02 to 0.41) and to understand when and why to use these strategies (conditional knowledge) (d = 0.20; 95%CI, -0.01 to 0.42), in addition to the abilities to plan (d = 0.31; 95%CI, 0.09-0.53) and to evaluate their learning (d = 0.31; 95%CI, 0.08-0.53). CONCLUSIONS: The Inverted Classroom has positive effects on metacognitive skills according to students' perceptions. Further studies are required that compare these effects with other methodologies for teaching in the classroom and the workplace.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the factors associated with impostor syndrome in medical students from six regions of Peru. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A multicentre, cross-sectional study was conduced on students from first to the sixth year in six Peruvian regions. Sociodemographic, academic, and psychological characteristics were included through the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Clance Imposter Phenomenon Scale. Generalised linear models were performed using crude and adjusted estimated prevalence ratios. RESULTS: Of 2,231 medical students, 54.3% were female and 30.6% had the impostor phenomenon. An association was found between the PI and those who suffered from depression (aPR=1.51; 95%CI, 1.27-1.79), anxiety (aPR=2.25; 95%CI, 1.75-2.90), stress (aPR=1.37; 95%CI, 1.19-1.57), and being female (aPR=1.12; 95%CI, 1.01-1.26). CONCLUSIONS: Three out of 10 medical students suffer from PI; having some level of depression, anxiety, stress, being a woman, and/or attending the fourth academic year were predisposing factors for their development.

RESUMEN

Radiology is now an essential part of Clinical Medicine, but undergraduate training does not reflect its importance in medical practice. In the current course, there are 46 medical schools in our country. According to the information published on the institutional websites, the study plans are very different in terms of the presence of Diagnostic Radiology and the organization of teaching. The estimated number of teaching hours in diagnostic radiology (mean ±â€¯standard deviation) is 61.3 ±â€¯22.2 h (range from 26 h to 137 h). There is a great shortage of clinical university professors, and a generational change is essential. The current situation poses various challenges, including adapting to new teaching methods and technologies and promoting the presence of radiology in medical study plans, paying special attention to hospital practices, the Final Degree Project (FDP) and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

OBJECTIVE: To assess the mental health status and associated factors of Peruvian medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Descriptive, multicentre, correlational study that used the "Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9)", the "Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7)" and the "Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R)" questionnaires to evaluate mental health problems. RESULTS: A total of 1,238 students from 8 Peruvian medical schools participated in the study. Of these, 68.5% were women, and the mean age was 21.4 years. Depressive symptoms were found in 74% of the participants, anxiety symptoms in 57% and distress symptoms in 65%. The variables associated with the development of symptoms of moderate-severe depression, anxiety and distress were: not having family economic stability, being in the first years of medical training, being female, and fearing that their medical training would be delayed and impaired. CONCLUSIONS: In a sample of medical students surveyed during the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health problems were common. The factors associated with mental health reported in this study could be useful in identifying vulnerable medical students who require timely psychosocial support and/or psychiatric care.

BACKGROUND: The expression of empathy improves the quality of health care, which is why its instruction is suggested during the years of academic training of medical students. However, expressing empathy can also cause anxiety and impair psychological well-being. OBJECTIVE: To identify profiles that describe the relationship between empathy, anxiety and psychological well-being in Mexican medical students. METHOD: Cross-sectional study in Mexican medical students completed the Multidimensional Empathy Scale, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Psychological Well-Being Scale for Adults. RESULTS: Women presented greater empathy and anxiety and lower psychological well-being (p < 0.01). Anxiety in students of the last year of training was lower compared to students of the first and second year (p < 0.01). Four profiles were detected: 1) men, minimal anxiety, low empathy; 2) first-year students, moderate to severe anxiety, low psychological well-being, high empathy; 3) last year of training, mild anxiety, adequate psychological well-being, medium empathy; 4) women, second and third year of training, very high empathy. CONCLUSIONS: Medical students in their first year of training constitute a population at risk. Attention strategies are necessary for this student group.


ANTECEDENTES: La expresión de empatía mejora la calidad de la atención a la salud, y por ello se sugiere su instrucción durante los años de formación académica de estudiantes de medicina. No obstante, la expresión de empatía también puede ocasionar ansiedad y perjudicar el bienestar psicológico. OBJETIVO: Identificar perfiles que describan la relación entre empatía, ansiedad y bienestar psicológico en estudiantes mexicanos de medicina. MÉTODO: Estudio transversal en estudiantes mexicanos de medicina que completaron la Escala Multidimensional de Empatía, el Inventario de Ansiedad de Beck y la Escala de Bienestar Psicológico para Adultos. RESULTADOS: Las mujeres presentaron mayor empatía y ansiedad, y menor bienestar psicológico (p < 0.01). La ansiedad en estudiantes del último año de formación fue menor que en los estudiantes de primer y segundo año (p < 0.01). Se detectaron cuatro perfiles: 1) hombres, ansiedad mínima, empatía baja; 2) estudiantes de primer año de formación, ansiedad moderada a grave, bienestar psicológico bajo, empatía alta; 3) último año de formación, ansiedad leve, bienestar psicológico adecuado, empatía media; 4) mujeres, segundo y tercer años de formación, muy alta empatía. CONCLUSIONES: Los estudiantes de medicina del primer año de formación constituyen una población de riesgo. Son necesarias estrategias de atención para este grupo estudiantil.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Burnout syndrome (BS) has been evaluated in few populations of medical students, and its relationship with depression is even less studied. The objective was to determine the frequency of BS in medical students of the Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia (UPTC), in Tunja, Colombia, as well as its association with depression and other social, economic, demographic, and academic factors. METHODS: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was carried out on 182 UPTC medical students during 2018. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS) was applied, with which 3 components were obtained to determine positive SB. This was crossed in the Stata 15 program for depression and other social, economic, demographic, and academic covariates with the Generalised Linear Model (GLM). RESULTS: Of 182 respondents, 51.4% were women. The median age was 21 years (20-23 years). 14% had BS, of which 48% had depression. In the multiple regression, BS was significantly associated with a higher frequency of depression (RPa = 5.54; IC95%, 2.36-13.02; P < 0.001) and the feeling of insufficient money (RPa = 4.37; IC95%, 1.95-9.83; P < 0.001), in contrast to a negative association with smoking (RPa = 0.13; IC95%, 0.06-0.30; P < 0.001) and being a woman (RPa = 0.32; IC95%, 0.12-0.82; P = 0.018). The age of onset of marijuana use was not significant. CONCLUSIONS: BS shows a high association with increased depression and a feeling that the money is not enough at the end of the month, but it showed a negative association with tobacco consumption and being a woman. Such students should be detected to provide them with adequate academic support.
