Hepatitis D virus (HDV), which occurs as a co-infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV), is a significant public health burden. Currently, there is a scarcity of data regarding this co-infection in the developing countries. This study aims to address the clinical prevalence of HDV among HBV-infected patients in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, Iraq. This prospective cross-sectional study, conducted from May to November 2022, screened HBV DNA-positive patients visiting Sulaimani Teaching Hospital in Sulaymaniyah governorate, Iraq, for anti-HDV antibodies and HDV RNA. The study included 150 confirmed HBV DNA-positive patients. Of these, 54.7% were male. The mean age of the patients was 49.1 ± 10.1 (18-68). Serological assessment found that 23 (15.3%) of the patients had anti-HDV IgG antibodies, suggesting past or chronic HDV infection, while 16 (10.7%) tested positive for anti-HDV IgM, indicating recent/acute infection. Further molecular analysis confirmed HDV RNA in 15 (10%) of HBV patients, indicating real HDV prevalence. The prevalence of anti-HDV and HDV RNA did not significantly differ by age, gender, marital status, residency, medical, family or medical history (p > 0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrated a relatively high HDV prevalence among HBV patients in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, Iraq, at 10%, which stresses the need for better screening, health strategies and focused research to combat its impact.

The clinical spectrum of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), an intracellular parasitic pathogen, ranges from a single sore healing to chronic crusty lesions with a manifestation of treatment resistance. The complicated interaction between Leishmania bodies and the early immune response, including innate and adaptive mechanisms, determines the evolution of nodules. This study examined the levels of the chemoattractant interleukin 8 (IL-8), pro-inflammatory nitric oxide (NO), and immunoregulatory macrophage inhibitory factor (MIF) in the serum of subjects recently diagnosed with cutaneous leishmaniasis, in parallel with patients being monitored during consecutive sodium stibogluconate (Pentostam) treatment. A total of 161 serum samples of newly diagnosed individuals and patients undergoing pentostam injections were collected form an endemic area of Diyala, east central of Iraq. Sandwich ELISA was used to measure the level of IL-8, NO and MIF in the studied groups. Results of circulatory markers levels showed a considerable difference in all groups, with IL-8 being exceptionally higher in the first two groups of pretreated and dose-1 (191.5, 273.64) pg/ml respectively, while NO was found to be lower than in control subjects, particularly in the pretreated group (12.08 µmol/L) and MIF level was significantly higher in the pretreated group, which was (7.18 pg/ml). These findings can provide insights for distinction of disease phase and monitoring treatment efficacy along consecutive dosages, particularly in populations where CL is endemic.

Bovine papular stomatitis virus (BPSV) is a parapoxvirus that infects cattle, causing skin lesions on the udder and mouth. There have been few studies on the prevalence and molecular characteristics of BPSV in Iraq. Here, we describe the prevalence, phylogenetic analysis, and clinico-epidemiological features of BPSV in cattle in Al-Qadisiyah, Iraq. A total of 264 animals were examined for teat and oral lesions, and BPSV was detected by PCR in 79.9% (211/264) of cattle and calves with skin lesions. The lesions included ulcers, papules, and scabby proliferative areas. The BPSV strains from Iraq clustered phylogenetically with BPSV strains detected in the USA. Further studies are needed to explore the evolution and epidemiology of this virus in the region.

BACKGROUND: Bovine besnoitiosis (elephant skin disease) caused by Besnoitia besnoiti is a costly endemic disease in the Middle East, Asia, and tropical and subtropical Africa and is also emerging as a significant problem in Europe. This study is aimed at determining the prevalence of B. besnoiti in blood and skin biopsies of cattle as well as evaluating the risk factors associated with the infection among cattle in Mosul, Iraq. METHODS AND RESULTS: To achieve this aim, four hundred and sixty apparently healthy cattle of different breeds, ages, and sexes were sampled from seven different locations in Mosul, Iraq. Blood and skin biopsies were carefully collected from each cattle, and these samples were subjected to molecular analysis. The detection of B. besnoiti was molecularly confirmed by the presence of 231 bp of ITS-1 in the rDNA gene of the protozoan. Besnoitia besnoiti DNA was present in 74 (16.09%; 95% CI = 13.01-19.72) and 49 (10.65%; 95% CI = 8.15-13.80) of the blood and skin biopsies, respectively, that were analyzed. Age, breed, and sex were significantly (p < 0.05) associated with the occurrence of B. besnoiti among cattle in the study area. CONCLUSIONS: Findings from this study will serve as baseline data in the epidemiology, prevention, and control of the protozoan among cattle in Iraq.

OBJECTIVES: Sulphur mustard (SM) is a chemical weapon agent that was extensively used by Iraqi troops during the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988), resulting in exposure among Iranian military personnel and civilians. However, there is limited and conflicting information about the long-term mortality effects of SM exposure. This study aimed to determine the standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) in individuals exposed to SM gas during the Iran-Iraq war. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective follow-up study. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Veterans and Martyr Affair Foundation of Iran (VMAF) regarding all confirmed individuals who were exposed to SM during the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) up to 30 March 2019. The mortality rate, cumulative mortality and SMR with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to assess mortality in chemical warfare survivors (CWS), and results were compared with the general Iranian population. Overall survival was analysed using the Kaplan-Meier curve, and the log-rank test was employed to compare survival probability across different categories. RESULTS: Among the 48,067 confirmed CWS, a total of 4358 (9.1 %) individuals had died by the end of the study period (30 March 2019), with a mean age of 55.5 ± 14.4 years at the time of death. Overall, at the 39-year follow-up, the mortality rate due to all causes of death for people who were exposed to SM was lower than the general Iranian population (SMR: 0.70, 95 % CI: 0.68-0.72). However, cause-specific SMR analysis showed that the mortality rate due to liver cancer (SMR: 1.98, 95 % CI: 1.59-2.45), poisonings (SMR: 1.92, 95 % CI: 1.52-2.38), respiratory disorders (SMR: 1.59, 95 % CI: 1.46-1.73) and multiple myeloma (SMR: 1.72, 95 % CI: 1.06-2.62) were approximately twofold higher in CWS than the general population. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides valuable insights into the mortality effects of SM exposure among the Iranian population affected by the Iran-Iraq war. The results emphasise the importance of continued monitoring and support for individuals exposed to SM, particularly in the context of managing and addressing the heightened risks associated with liver cancer, poisonings, respiratory disorders and multiple myeloma. Further research and interventions may be necessary to mitigate these specific health challenges in the affected population.

A survey of plant-parasitic nematode genera associated with roots of mature date palm trees was conducted in central Iraq to study the occurrence, population density and geographical distribution. This study in Baghdad, Babil, Diyala, Karbela, Najaf, and Wasit governorates was conducted from 2019 to 2023, during the months from October to April. A total of 150 soil and root samples were gathered from 46 fields, and plant parasitic nematodes were extracted and morphologically identified to genus level. Eleven genera of plant parasitic nematodes were detected in the declining order of frequency: Tylenchorhynchus spp. (20%) in Baghdad, Babil, Diyala, Karbala, and Najaf; Meloidogyne spp., (17.3%) in Baghdad, Babil, Diyala, Najaf, and Wasit; Paratylenchus spp. (16%) in Diyala and Najaf; Helicotylenchus spp. (12%) in Baghdad, Diyala, Najaf, and Wasit; Tylenchus spp. (12%) in Baghdad, Babil, Diyala, Najaf, and Wasit; Aphelenchoides spp. (6.7%) in Babil, Diyala, Karbala, and Wasit; Pratylenchus spp. (4%) in Baghdad, Diyala, Najaf, and Wasit; Ditylenchus spp. (3.3%) in Babil and Najaf; Hoplolaimus spp. (1.3%) in Diyala; and Heterodera spp. and Scutellonema spp. (0.7% each) in Diyala. Population density was low in Baghdad. High population density was recorded for Meloidogyne spp., (37625 J2 /1000 cm3 soil) and lowest population density occurred with Paratylenchus spp. (20 nematodes /1000 cm3 soil) in Diyala (Al-Jadidah). This appears to be the first report of occurrences of plant-parasitic nematodes of date palm in central Iraq.

Thalassemia major is one of the health problems in Iraq, especially in Kurdistan. Pre-marriage mandatory preventive screening program was established in Kurdistan in 2008, which allowed us to study the prevalence of different hemoglobinopathies among newly married young adults in this region. A total of 1154 subjects (577 couples) attending the Koya district, premarital Health center, were screened using red cell indices. Those who had mean corpuscular volume (MCV)<80 fl and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH)<27 pg had high-performance liquid chromatography and iron studies. Out of 1154 individuals that were evaluated, 183 (11.9%) had low MCV and MCH. Of the former 183 subjects, 69 (5.97%) had ß-thalassemia trait, 10 (0.86%) had δß-thalassemia trait, and no other hemoglobinopathies were recorded in our study. There was second-degree consanguinity in 4.7% of all 577 couples. In two couples, both partners had ß-thalassemia trait and both were consanguineous. Both couples decided to separate after counseling. Based on the current study, the role of the premarital screening program in decreasing the number of new thalassemia major cases among the Kurdish population is laudable. Therefore, mandatory premarital screening is advised in all parts of Iraq.

To assess the roles of genetic modifiers in Iraqi ß-thalassemia patients, and determine whether a genotype-based scoring system could be used to predict phenotype, a total of 224 Iraqi patients with molecularly characterized homozygous or compound heterozygous ß-thalassemia were further investigated for α-thalassemia deletions as well as five polymorphisms namely: rs7482144 C > T at HBG2, rs1427407 G > T and rs10189857 A > G at BCL11A, and rs28384513 A > C and rs9399137 T > C at HMIP. The enrolled patients had a median age of 14 years, with 96 males and 128 females. They included 144 thalassemia major, and 80 thalassemia intermedia patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that a model including sex and four of these genetic modifiers, namely: ß+ alleles, HBG2 rs7482144, α-thalassemia deletions, and BCL11A rs1427407 could significantly predict phenotype (major versus intermedia) with an overall accuracy of 83.9%. Furthermore, a log odds genetic score based on these significant predictors had a highly significant area under curve of 0.917 (95% CI 0.882-0.953). This study underscores the notion that genetic scoring systems should be tailored to populations in question, since genetic modifiers (and/or their relative weight) vary between populations. The population-oriented genetic scoring system created by the current study to predict ß-thalassemia phenotype among Iraqis may pave the way to personalized medicine in this patient's group.

Heavy metals can have significant impacts on human health due to their toxicity and potential to accumulate in the body over time. Some heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic, are particularly harmful even at low concentrations. The estimation of hazards of vegetable intake to human health as well as explore the of heavy metals accumulation in different vegetables (cucumbers, tomato, eggplant, and bell peppers) collected in Erbil city from different source locally and imported from nearby country are conducted. The heavy metals concentration (cooper, zinc, lead and cadmium) was measured and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometry. The maximum concentration of Pb was 27.95 mg/kg and the minimum was 6.49 mg/kg; for Cd, the concentration was 1.43 and 0.99 mg/kg, 74.94 and 5.14 mg/kg for Zn; and for Cu, the result was 56.25 and 8.2 mg/kg for the maximum and minimum, which they are within limits described by Food Agricultural Organization, but more than health limits and health risks calculated by mean of hazard quotient (HQ) techniques for Cu and Pb which they are more than 1. The local sample that collected in Erbil city show less concentration of heavy metals and low HQ in comparison with imported samples. The carcinogenic risk study shows elevated risk of accumulative consuming of edible part of those plant which they exceed the permissible limit that is 10-6.

The camel has played a role in human civilization since its inception and holds significant importance in the customs and agricultural practices of various nations. This study examined the prevalence of internal parasitic infestations in camels within the Al-Diwaniyah and Al-Najaf provinces of Iraq from December 2021 to September 2022. A total of 200 fecal samples were randomly collected from farm camels, revealing that these animals were affected by one or more types of intestinal parasites. Nematodes exhibited the highest prevalence at 56 %, followed by Protozoa at 28.5 %, Cestodes at 14.5 %, and Trematodes at 1 %. Among these parasites, Trichostrongylus spp. had the highest percentage at 33 %, followed by Moneizia benedeni (12.5 %), Fasciola hepatica (10.5 %), Strongyloides spp. (8 %), Giardia spp. (7 %), Nematodirus spp. (6 %), and Eimeria spp. (6 %). Furthermore, mixed-species or single-species infections in camels were observed, including Anoplcephala perfoliata (4 %), Haemonchus spp. (3.5 %), Dictyocaulus spp. (3 %), Trichuris trichura (2.5 %), Entamoeba spp. (2 %), and Balantidium coli (1 %). Additionally, nested PCR was employed to identify Trichostrongylus spp., with 45.4 % of camels testing positive for this particular parasite.

OBJECTIVE: Lipocalin-2 is an acute phase-associated adipokine that can serve as an inflammatory and biomarker indicator of cartilage deterioration in osteoarthritis. However, its role in the musculoskeletal system remains not fully understood. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate lipocalin-2 and its relationship with markers of inflammation (Interferon-gamma, ESR, and CRP), bone density (vitamin D3 and calcium), and the triglyceride-glucose index in new-onset arthritis patients in Mosul, Iraq. METHODS: This study included 125 participants aged 20 to 65, divided into two groups. The Arthritis Patient Group comprised 70 participants (37 females and 33 males) attending the Bone Diseases Consultation Unit at the Ibn Sina Teaching Hospital in Mosul, Iraq. The Control Group comprised 31 females and 24 males. Ethical approval was obtained from the Iraqi Ministry of Health - Nineveh Health (No. 2022095). Commercial ELISA kits were used to measure serum lipocalin-2, Interferon-gamma, ESR, and CRP as inflammation markers, vitamin D3, and calcium as bone density markers. Moreover, the Triglyceride Glucose (TYG) Index was evaluated. RESULTS: The findings revealed a significant increase in lipocalin-2 levels in males compared to females, with LCN-2 increasing with age. Arthritis patients showed a significant increase (72%) in lipocalin-2 levels. Inflammatory indicators (erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, interferon-gamma) displayed significant increases (46%, 1200%, and 581%, respectively). Glucose (23%), triglycerides (71%), and TYG index (21%) also exhibited significant increases. Meanwhile, bone density indicators (vitamin D3 and calcium) found a significant decrease (53% and 20%, respectively) in arthritis patients. Linear correlation coefficient (R) analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between lipocalin-2 and indicators of inflammation, glucose, TG, and TYG index. CONCLUSION: This study's findings suggest that LCN-2 serum levels were higher in patients with new-onset arthritis than in controls in Mosul, and LCN-2 serum increased in males compared with females and getting older serum LCN-2 increased for the patients and control groups. Furthermore, a significant correlation was found between the Triglyceride Glucose Index, which measures metabolic disorders, and serum LCN-2 levels and inflammatory indicators in new-onset arthritis patients in Mosul, Iraq.

The aim of this study is to demonstrate the prevalence of the long-term side effects of COVID-19, namely memory impairment among recovered patients, and obtaining the associated factors that link with memory impairment. It is a cross-sectional retrospective cohort study, that has been conducted from September to November 2022 in Iraq. People who were previously infected with COVID-19 were included. The study was performed by asking people to complete a questionnaire platform by either online or face-to-face interview. The Memory Assessment Clinic-Q (MAC-Q) test was utilized, scores that are equal or higher than 25 are indicative of memory decline. Thousand two hundred and eighty-seven participated in this study. However, only 1157 were included in the final analysis. Three hundred ninety-nine (34.49%) have memory impairment after COVID-19 recovery. Female gender, older age group, repeated exposure to COVID-19 infections, severe diseases, and exposure to multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants were independent risk factors of memory deficit in post-COVID-19 survivors with a p-value of 0.0001, 0.02, 0.0001, 0.001, 0.0001 respectively. It is crucial to pay particular attention to psychosocial rehabilitation of such risky groups. COVID-19 vaccine administrations with booster shots are necessary steps to decrease the disease incidence and avoid subsequent post-COVID-19 symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Canna yellow streak virus (CaYSV, family Potyviridae) infects many canna cultivars, which have been widely cultivated in the Iraqi gardens for ornamental purposes. The genetic variability within multiple genomic regions of CaYSV population has been demonstrated in the 3' part, particularly in the coat protein (CP). This work was aimed to characterize CaYSV and investigate its variability from canna plants in Iraq. METHOD AND RESULTS: Leaves of canna plants grown in several gardens in Baghdad were tested by potyvirus group antibodies and RT-PCR. Analysis of the nucleotide (nt) sequences corresponding to the 3' part of the virus genome revealed the highest identity (81.6-90.6%) with known CaYSV isolates. Phylogenetic analysis of the coat protein (CP) gene sequence placed the Iraqi isolates in a separate clade with members of group A. This distinction was evidenced by unique amino acid changes found within the N-terminal motif of the CP. This is the first report of phylogenetically distinct CaYSV in Iraq. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of phylogenetically distinct CaYSV with divergent CP N-terminus in Iraq.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 25% of facility births take place in private health facilities. Recent national studies of maternal and newborn health (MNH) service availability and quality have focused solely on the status of public sector facilities, leaving a striking gap in information on the quality of maternal and newborn care services. METHODS: A rapid cross-sectional assessment was conducted in November 2022 to assess the quality of MNH services at private hospitals in Iraq. Multi-stage sampling was used to select 15% of the country's 164 private hospitals. Assessment tools included a facility assessment checklist, a structured health worker interview tool, and a structured client exit interview tool. Data collection was conducted using KoboToolbox software on Android tablets, and analysis conducted using SPSS v28. RESULTS: All hospitals visited provided MNH services and had skilled personnel present or on-call 24 h/day, 7 days/week. Most births (88%) documented between January and June 2022 were cesarean births. Findings indicate that nearly all hospitals have the human resources, equipment, medicines and supplies necessary for quality antenatal, intrapartum and early essential newborn care, and many are also equipped with special units and resources needed to care for small and sick babies. However, while resources are in place for basic and advanced care, there are gaps in knowledge and practice of high-impact interventions that require few or no resources to perform, including skin-to-skin thermal care and support for early initiation of breastfeeding. Person-centered maternity care scores suggest that private hospitals offer a positive experience of care for all clients, however there is room for improvement in provider-client communication. CONCLUSIONS: This assessment highlights the need for deeper dives into factors that underly decisions about how and where to give birth, and both understanding and practice of early essential newborn care and pre-discharge examinations and counseling at private healthcare facilities in Iraq. Engaging private health facility staff in efforts to monitor and improve the quality of maternal and newborn care, with a focus on early essential newborn care and provider-client communication for all clients, will ensure that women and newborns benefit from the best care possible with available resources.

Level of contraceptive use is one of the primary proximate determinants of fertility level. Among Arab countries, Iraq experiences high fertility rates, especially among adolescents. According to the 2018 Iraq Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (IMICS 2018), 52.8% of currently married Iraqi women used a contraceptive method (36.1% used modern methods, and 16.7% used traditional methods). A multiple multinomial logistic regression model was adopted to investigate the demographic, socioeconomic, fertility, and cultural determinants of contraceptive use among currently married, nonpregnant Iraqi women based on the 2018 Iraq Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey data. The main findings indicated that women using modern contraceptive methods had more children, did not experience the death of a child, and had no desire for more children. Moreover, they were married before age 21, had at least an upper secondary education, had access to mass media, used the internet, belonged to a low or middle wealth category, and lived in urban Kurdistan. Kurdish women prefer to use traditional methods. The results suggest that family planning programmes should target women who live in southern/central areas of Iraq, as they were the least likely to use contraceptives, and motivate Kurdish women to use modern contraceptives rather than traditional contraceptives.

Silent ischemic infarcts have been reported to be the most frequent neurological abnormalities in sickle cell disease (SCD) in several studies worldwide. However, no previous studies investigated this neurological disorder in Iraqi SCD patients. To address this issue, a total of 52 patients with a median age of 20 years (range 10-46) and including 46.2% males were enrolled. Patients were clinically evaluated and their records were reviewed. They had full blood and reticulocyte counts, hemoglobin F estimation, serum lactic dehydrogenase and bilirubin assayed, as well as brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to screen for silent cerebral infarcts. Six out of the 52 patients (11.5%) had silent cerebral infarcts, all of which were in the deep white matter, ranging from 6 to 10 mm in their largest diameters. There were no significant differences in age, sex, or sickle cell genotype between those with silent cerebral infarcts and those without it. Those with silent cerebral infarcts had lower median hemoglobin, higher reticulocytes and lower pain frequencies than those without it, yet again this was not significant. Follow up MRI in four out of the six silent infarct patients showed no additional lesions and no increase in size of the original ones after six to eight months. In conclusion, it appears that the frequency of silent cerebral infarcts in Iraqi SCD patients is lower than the bulk of the literature from other populations. Further studies to screen for genetic polymorphisms that may explain this lower rate may be informative.

ß-thalassemia is a prevalent inherited red cell disorder in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. To determine the chromosomal background of the frequent ß-thalassemia mutations in the latter region, we investigated the ß-globin gene cluster haplotypes in 202 ß-thalassemia chromosomes. Haplotypes analysis utilized restriction fragment length polymorphism-PCR of seven restriction sites through the ß-globin gene cluster. It was observed that IVS-II-1 (G > A) was mainly associated with haplotype III (68.8%), IVS-1-110 (G > A), codon 8/9 (+G) and codon 44 (-C) with haplotype I (in 90.0%, 100%, and 62.5% respectively), IVS-1-6 (T > C) with haplotype VI (97.4%), codon 8 (-AA) with haplotype IV (75%), codon 5(-CT) and IVS1.1 (G > A) with haplotype V (55.6% and 58.3% respectively), while codon 39 (C > T) and IVS1.5 (G > C) were mainly associated with haplotype VII (85.7% and 75% respectively). These observations support the notion that while some mutations may have originated in the Kurdistan region, others were more likely brought in by gene flow from neighboring countries or the Indian subcontinent. The association of some ß-thalassemia defects with more than one haplotype may be due to mutations or recombination events.

BACKGROUND: The Battle of Mosul (2016-2017) was an urban conflict resulting in over 9000 civilian deaths. Emergency Management Centre (EMC), located 90 km from Mosul, was designated as a civilian-run trauma centre as part of the novel Mosul Trauma Pathway. Patients necessitating exploratory laparotomy (ex-lap) provide a unique window into the system of care delivery in conflicts, given the importance of timely, resource-intensive care. However, there is insufficient knowledge regarding the presentation and outcomes for conflict-related ex-lap in civilian institutions. METHODS: This is a descriptive study retrospectively analyzing routinely collected data for all patients who underwent ex-lap at EMC for injuries sustained during the battle of Mosul. Differences in demographics, pre-hospital/hospital course, and New Injury Severity Scores (NISS) were analysed using student t-test, Hotelling T-squared, and linear regression. RESULTS: During the battle, 1832 patients with conflict-related injuries were admitted to EMC. Some 73/1832 (4.0%) underwent ex-lap, of whom 22/73 (30.1%) were children and 40/73 (54.8%) were non-combatant adults. Men constituted 51/73 (69%) patients. Gunshot wounds caused 19/73 (26.0%) injuries, while ordnances caused 52/73 (71.2%). Information regarding hospital course was available for 47/73 (64.4%) patients. Children had prolonged time from injury to first laparotomy compared to adults (600 vs 208 min, p < 0.05). Median LOS was 6 days (IQR 4-9.5); however, 11/47 (23%) patients left against medical advice. Post-operative complications occurred in 11/47 (23.4%) patients; 6/11 (54.5%) were surgical site infections. There were 12 (25.5%) patients who underwent relaparotomies after index surgery elsewhere; 10/12 (83.3%) were for failed repairs or missed injuries. Median NISS was 18 (IQR 12-27). NISS were significantly higher for women (vs men; 28.5 vs 19.8), children (vs adults; 28.8 vs 20), and relaparotomy patients (vs primary laparotomy patients; 32.0 vs 19.0). Some 3 patients died, 2 of whom were relaparotomies. CONCLUSION: At this civilian tertiary trauma centre, conflict-related exploratory laparotomies were associated with low morbidity and mortality. Long transport times, high rates of repeat laparotomies, and high numbers of patients leaving against medical advice raise questions regarding continuity of care along the Mosul Trauma Pathway. War as an unpleasant and stressful phenomenon could be the cause of psychiatric disorders. This study aims to collect and compare conducted research to estimate the prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in combatants, veterans, and freed soldiers of the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war. This study is a case review study in which articles were found using keywords, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), veterans, combatants, captive, soldiers and war in domestic and foreign databases, personal archives, libraries of Iran and Tehran Universities of Medical Sciences and the National Library. The cumulative incidence of PTSD was determined to be 27.8% in veterans, combatants, and freed soldiers. The prevalence of PTSD as seen in civilian and some military studies is less than the values determined in this study. Reasons for this discrepancy may be due to longer durations of exposure and greater numbers of in-the-field missions, multiple traumas, and higher rates of combat exposure, as well as differences in sampling and measurement strategies (e.g. the use of questionnaires instead of clinical interviews).

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries is a significant oral health issue in socially deprived communities, including refugees, where prevention plays a crucial role in minimizing the challenges and costs associated with treating early childhood caries. To improve oral health outcomes, it is important to understand parents' knowledge, attitudes, and practices. This study aims to assess the oral health knowledge, practices, and attitudes of refugee parents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 503 parents/caregivers residing in Erbil's refugee camps in Iraq, with healthy preschool children aged one to six years. Structured questionnaire was utilized in conducting individual interviews with parents to evaluate their knowledge, attitudes, and practices. The questionnaire collected demographic information and data on access to oral health services. RESULTS: A total of 503 out of 505 households actively participated in the study, resulting in a high response rate of 99.6%. Demographic analysis revealed that the majority of respondents were female parents, constituting 92.05% of the sample. Within the participant pool, the primary age groups were 26-35 years (55.3%) and 18-25 years (26.2%). Educational background analysis revealed that a significant proportion of parents had attained a secondary school education (29.6%) or primary school education (27.4%). Statistical analysis further established a noteworthy association between educational background and knowledge level. The investigation of participants' knowledge uncovered notable gaps and misconceptions pertaining to early childhood caries, with an overall mean score of 5.1. Assessing the overall attitude of parents, a mean score of 3.87 (SD = 1.29) suggested a generally unfavorable attitude towards oral hygiene practices and prevention of early childhood caries. In terms of actual practices, parents demonstrated a mean practice score of 5.7. CONCLUSIONS: This study emphasizes knowledge gaps and misconceptions among parents in refugee camps regarding early childhood caries in preschool children. Findings revealed low knowledge scores, limited understanding of hidden sugars, delayed oral hygiene practices, and limited knowledge about fluoride.
