Toxocara cati and T. canis are parasitic nematodes found in the intestines of cats and dogs respectively, with a cosmopolitan distribution, and the potential for anthropozoonotic transmission, resulting in human toxocariasis. Spread of Toxocara spp. is primarily through the ingestion of embryonated eggs contaminating surfaces or uncooked food, or through the ingestion of a paratenic host containing a third-stage larva. The Toxocara spp. eggshell is composed of a lipid layer providing a permeability barrier, a chitinous layer providing structural strength, and thin vitelline and uterine layers, which combined create a biologically resistant structure, making the Toxocara spp. egg very hardy, and capable of surviving for years in the natural environment. The use of sodium hypochlorite, household bleach, as a disinfectant for Toxocara spp. eggs has been reported, with results varying from ineffective to limited effectiveness depending on parameters including contact time, concentration, and temperature. Desiccation or humidity levels have also been reported to have an impact on larval development and/or survival of Toxocara spp. eggs. However, to date, after a thorough search of the literature, no relevant publications have been found that evaluated the use of sodium hypochlorite and desiccation in combination. These experiments aim to assess the effects of using a combination of desiccation and 10% bleach solution (0.6% sodium hypochlorite) on fertilized or embryonated eggs of T. cati, T. canis, and T. vitulorum. Results of these experiments highlight the synergistic effects of desiccation and bleach, and demonstrate a relatively simple method for surface inactivation, resulting in a decrease in viability or destruction of T. cati, T. canis and T. vitulorum eggs. Implications for these findings may apply to larger scale elimination of ascarid eggs from both research, veterinary, and farming facilities to mitigate transmission.

The pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD) is complex and multifactorial. However, recent advancements in the genetics and pathophysiology of AD suggest that epidermal barrier dysfunction is paramount in the development and progression of the condition (Boguniewicz M, Leung DYM, Immunol Rev 242(1):233-246, 2011). In addition to standard therapy for AD, there are a plethora of nonprescription treatment modalities which may be employed. Over-the-counter treatments for atopic dermatitis can come in the form of topical corticosteroids, moisturizers/emollients, and oral antihistamines. Though these treatments are beneficial, prescription treatments may be quicker acting and more efficacious in patients with moderate to severe disease or during flares. OTC agents are best used for maintenance between flares and to prevent progression of mild disease. Alternative and complementary treatments lack strong efficacy evidence. However, wet wraps, bleach baths, and other treatments appear to be promising when used in conjunction with conventional treatments. With the financial burden of atopic dermatitis ranging from 364 million to 3.8 billion dollars each year in the United States, we suspect this topic will gain further research attention.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of different polishing techniques and coffee staining on the color stability of four commercially available bleach-shade composite resins, namely microhybrid, nanohybrid, nanofilled, and injectable nanohybrids. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 224 discs (8 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness) were fabricated from four different bleach-shade composite resins, namely microhybrid (Gradia Direct Anterior), nanohybrid (Palfique LX5), nanofilled (Filtek Universal), and injectable nanohybrid (flowable G-aenial universal injectable). The composite resin groups were polished via four techniques: no polishing, 4-step polishing using aluminum oxide discs, 3-step polishing using silicon rubber diamond discs, and one-step polishing. Half of each group was immersed in water, while the other half was immersed in coffee for 12 days (n = 7). Colors were measured using a clinical spectrophotometer, and color differences were calculated (ΔE). The results were analyzed statistically. RESULTS: The alterations in color were significantly influenced by the techniques employed for finishing and polishing techniques, composite resin type, and degree of coffee staining. Regardless of the polishing technique and storage medium, different material types showed a significant color change (ΔE) at P < 0.001. Filtek exhibited the most significant color change, followed by Gradia and Palfique, with no significant differences between them. In addition, Different polishing techniques resulted in significant color changes (P < 0.001). The highest degree of color change was seen in the no-polishing group, followed by the 4-step and 1-step polishing groups, with negligible differences between each other. Also, Storage media had a significant effect on ΔE values. CONCLUSION: Appropriate finishing and polishing procedures can improve the color stability of bleach-shaded composite resins. Coffee has a deleterious effect on color; however, injectable flowable nanohybrid composites are more resistant to staining.

Mask wearing and bleach disinfectants became commonplace during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bleach generates toxic species including hypochlorous acid (HOCl), chlorine (Cl2), and chloramines. Their reaction with organic species can generate additional toxic compounds. To understand interactions between masks and bleach disinfection, bleach was injected into a ventilated chamber containing a manikin with a breathing system and wearing a surgical or KN95 mask. Concentrations inside the chamber and behind the mask were measured by a chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS) and a Vocus proton transfer reaction mass spectrometer (Vocus PTRMS). HOCl, Cl2, and chloramines were observed during disinfection and concentrations inside the chamber are 2-20 times greater than those behind the mask, driven by losses to the mask surface. After bleach injection, many species decay more slowly behind the mask by a factor of 0.5-0.7 as they desorb or form on the mask. Mass transfer modeling confirms the transition of the mask from a sink during disinfection to a source persisting >4 h after disinfection. Humidifying the mask increases reactive formation of chloramines, likely related to uptake of ammonia and HOCl. These experiments indicate that masks are a source of chemical exposure after cleaning events occur.

High loadings of biomass burning (BB) aerosol particles from wildfire or residential heating sources can be present in both outdoor and indoor environments, where they deposit onto surfaces such as walls and furniture. These pollutants can interact with oxidants in both the aerosol and deposited forms. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl), a strong oxidant emitted during cleaning with chlorine-cleaning agents such as bleach, can attain mixing ratios of hundreds of ppbv indoors; moreover, lower mixing ratios are naturally present outdoors. Here, we report the heterogeneous reactivity of HOCl with wood smoke aerosol particles. After exposure to gas-phase HOCl, the particle chlorine content increased reaching chlorine-to-organic mass ratios of 0.07 with the chlorine covalently bound as organochlorine species, many of which are aromatic. Investigating individual potential BB components, we observed that unsaturated species such as coniferaldehyde and furfural react efficiently with HOCl. These observations indicate that organochlorine pollutants will form indoors when bleach cleaning a wildfire impacted space. The chlorine component of particles internally mixed with BB material and chloride initially increased, upon HOCl exposure, indicating that active chlorine recycling in the outdoor environment will be suppressed in the presence of BB emissions.

BACKGROUND: Various products are available for lightening hair. There are no data on which applications are actually used in hairdressing, impeding proper estimation of actual exposure and necessary preventive measures. OBJECTIVES: To assess information about availability, usage and formulation of lightening preparations in the German hairdressing trade. METHODS: A market survey was conducted and hairdressers were surveyed by online questionnaires. RESULTS: Of 783 hairdressers clicking the link, 565 hairdressers (91.2% female, mean age of 40.2 ± 11.7 years) from all German states responded (response rate: 72.2%). The questionnaire survey has shown that available hair-lightening preparations in the German hairdressing trade are (multiple selection possible): dust-free (88.5%) and non-dust-free bleaching powders (22.1%), bleaching creams (41.9%), high-lifting hair colour creams (88.8%) and normal hair colour creams (58.4%). Five hundred eighteen (91.7%) hairdressers favour lightening hair with powder. The market survey revealed that bleaching powders and creams contain potassium persulfate, ammonium persulfate and sodium persulfate or combinations of these persulfate salts. CONCLUSIONS: Hairdressers are exposed to various hair-lightening applications containing different chemicals. Preventive measures need to address adverse skin and respiratory effects. Implementation of targeted health education already in early career stages (i.e., apprenticeship) seems advisable and can be maintained by refresher trainings.

Despite the high death toll of the COVID-19 pandemic, reported rates of adherence to adaptive preventive health behaviours during the early wave of the pandemic were suboptimal for reducing the risk of disease spread. Additionally, some have adopted practices with the intention of preventing infection that have harmful consequences. Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), consisting of perceived vulnerability, severity, response efficacy, and self-efficacy, has been used to predict intentions to engage in behaviours in past pandemics, and can be extended to the COVID-19 outbreak. Three hundred and thirty-three American adults completed a survey in May 2020 through Amazon's Mechanical Turk. Ten behaviours recommended by the CDC and WHO and two 'maladaptive' behaviours presented in the media were selected for investigation. Binary logistic regressions were conducted to assess the impacts of demographic variables and PMT constructs on behaviour frequency. Perceived severity and vulnerability were not significant predictors of behaviour frequency. Behaviour specific response efficacy and self-efficacy were significant predictors of 11/12 (odds ratios: 2.70-6.22) and 10/12 (odds ratios: 2.59-4.64) behaviours, respectively. Age, gender, education, political ideology, perceived severity, and perceived vulnerability were generally unimportant predictors. Beliefs about the effectiveness of the behaviour and one's ability to carry out that behaviour consistently seem to be more important in predicting how often someone engages in that behaviour than the perceived dangerousness of COVID-19 and one's believed susceptibility to infection. These results suggest that interventions trying to modulate the likelihood of engaging in preventive behaviours should focus on the effectiveness of these behaviours in reducing risk of spread and the individual's ability to engage in these behaviours frequently rather than the dangerousness of the COVID-19 pandemic and the individual's risk of becoming infected.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the surface roughness evolution of several finished and polished composites when bleaching materials are applied. The research was conducted on four microhybrid or nanofilled composites that are used in dental restorations. Materials and Methods: For each composite type, 5 samples were selected for control, 5 samples were subjected to the bleaching protocol "office bleach" with 40% hydrogen peroxide, and 5 other samples were subjected to the "home bleach" protocol with 16% carbamide peroxide, resulting in a total number of 60 samples. The surfaces of all the samples were tested for roughness, and the values of the most relevant parameter (Ra), were collected. Comparisons between composites and samples were performed using one-way ANOVA (in Statistical Package for Social Sciences). Results: After the bleaching protocol with 40% hydrogen peroxide gel, it was found that the roughness of the group increased considerably compared to the control group, so the highest roughness was found at GC Gradia direct anterior group, and the lowest value was registered for the 3M ESPE Valux Plus group. Following the bleaching protocol with 16% carbamide peroxide (home bleach), it was noted that the sample surfaces were not as affected. In this case, the lowest roughness was found at 3M ESPE Valux Plus group, and the highest roughness was registered for the GC G-aenial anterior group. Following the interpretation of the results, all four types of dental composites tested showed significant surface roughness differences between the groups subjected to bleaching protocols and those kept as control (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The surfaces of the samples were affected by the bleaching protocols by increasing the roughness compared to the control samples.

Two-component systems (TCS) are signaling pathways that allow bacterial cells to sense, respond to, and adapt to fluctuating environments. Among the classical TCS of Escherichia coli, HprSR has recently been shown to be involved in the regulation of msrPQ, which encodes the periplasmic methionine sulfoxide reductase system. In this study, we demonstrated that hypochlorous acid (HOCl) induces the expression of msrPQ in an HprSR-dependent manner, whereas H2O2, NO, and paraquat (a superoxide generator) do not. Therefore, HprS appears to be an HOCl-sensing histidine kinase. Using a directed mutagenesis approach, we showed that Met residues located in the periplasmic loop of HprS are important for its activity: we provide evidence that as HOCl preferentially oxidizes Met residues, HprS could be activated via the reversible oxidation of its methionine residues, meaning that MsrPQ plays a role in switching HprSR off. We propose that the activation of HprS by HOCl could occur through a Met redox switch. HprSR appears to be the first characterized TCS able to detect reactive chlorine species (RCS) in E. coli. This study represents an important step toward understanding the mechanisms of RCS resistance in prokaryotes. IMPORTANCE Understanding how bacteria respond to oxidative stress at the molecular level is crucial in the fight against pathogens. HOCl is one of the most potent industrial and physiological microbicidal oxidants. Therefore, bacteria have developed counterstrategies to survive HOCl-induced stress. Over the last decade, important insights into these bacterial protection factors have been obtained. Our work establishes HprSR as a reactive chlorine species-sensing, two-component system in Escherichia coli MG1655, which regulates the expression of msrPQ, two genes encoding, a repair system for HOCl-oxidized proteins. Moreover, we provide evidence suggesting that HOCl could activate HprS through a methionine redox switch.

Isocyanic acid (HNCO) and other nitrogen-containing volatile chemicals (organic isocyanates, hydrogen cyanide, nitriles, amines, amides) were measured during the House Observation of Microbial and Environmental Chemistry (HOMEChem) campaign. The indoor HNCO mean mixing ratio was 0.14 ± 0.30 ppb (range 0.012-6.1 ppb), higher than outdoor levels (mean 0.026 ± 0.15 ppb). From the month-long study, cooking and chlorine bleach cleaning are identified as the most important human-related sources of these nitrogen-containing gases. Gas oven cooking emits more isocyanates than stovetop cooking. The emission ratios HNCO/CO (ppb/ppm) during stovetop and oven cooking (mean 0.090 and 0.30) are lower than previously reported values during biomass burning (between 0.76 and 4.6) and cigarette smoking (mean 2.7). Bleach cleaning led to an increase of the HNCO mixing ratio of a factor of 3.5 per liter of cleaning solution used; laboratory studies indicate that isocyanates arise via reaction of nitrogen-containing precursors, such as indoor dust. Partitioned in a temperature-dependent manner to indoor surface reservoirs, HNCO was present at the beginning of HOMEChem, arising from an unidentified source. HNCO levels are higher at the end of the campaign than the beginning, indicative of occupant activities such as cleaning and cooking; however the direct emissions of humans are relatively minor.

RESUMEN

Dilute sodium hypochlorite (bleach) baths have been used in routine care for many dermatologic conditions, namely atopic dermatitis. The benefits of bleach baths in reducing bacterial carriage have been well documented; however, the instructions often require subjective interpretation of bathtub size and may result in varying concentrations of bleach. Herein, we review the evidence for use of bleach baths and provide a method for ensuring that proper bleach concentrations are achieved.

INTRODUCTION: The spread of contradictory health information was a hallmark of the early COVID-19 pandemic. Because of a limited understanding of the disease, its mode of transmission, and its pathogenicity, the public turned to easily accessible and familiar sources of information. Some of these sources included wrong or incomplete information that could increase health risks and incidents of toxicity due to improper information about the usage of disinfectants. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between sources of information about the COVID-19 pandemic, the related household cleaning and disinfection practices among adult women living in Egypt, and the associated adverse effects of bleach toxicity during a national lockdown. METHODS: Through a self-administered online survey, 452 adult women (18 years and older) living in Egypt were recruited from 13 cities between 4 June 2022 and 4 July 2022 to answer the questionnaire. The questionnaire included (41) questions in Arabic and collected data about respondents' household cleaning and disinfection practices to prevent the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and protect their families during the lockdown that started in Egypt in March 2020. RESULTS: The study found that 88.1% (n = 398) of participants reported increased use of disinfectants during the lockdown. Women who chose social media as their primary source of information to learn about disinfection practices reported an increased frequency of respiratory symptoms associated with bleach toxicity (correlation coefficient = 0.10, p-value = 0.03), followed by women who depended on relatives and friends as the primary source of information (correlation coefficient = 0.10, p-value = 0.02). CONCLUSION: This study showed that social media is an easily accessible, efficient and fast communication tool that can act as a primary source for individuals seeking medical information compared to other media platforms (e.g., websites, T.V., satellite channels). However, better regulations and monitoring of its content may help limit the harms caused by the misinformation and disinformation spread by these popular platforms, particularly in times of uncertainty and upheaval.

OBJECTIVE: To review the literature on respiratory effects of persulfate salts (PS) or hair bleaches in hairdressers and animal models exploring mechanisms behind PS-induced asthma. METHODS: A systematic review according to the PRISMA guidelines was performed. Studies published from 2000 to July 2021 that fulfilled predefined eligibility criteria were retrieved. Data were not quantitatively synthesized due to the heterogeneity of study designs, outcomes and methods. RESULTS: Forty-two articles were included. PS are indicated as the main cause of occupational rhinitis and asthma in hairdressers, and one of the leading causes of occupational asthma in some European countries. Bleaching products are indicated as the most important factor for development of respiratory symptoms, lung function decline, and leaving the hairdressing profession. Risk estimates from a good quality prospective study showed up to 3.9 times higher risk for wheezing and breathlessness in hairdressers aged ≥ 40 years than in matched controls, and 20 times higher risk in hairdressers to develop respiratory symptoms from exposure to bleaching powder than controls. Pathophysiological mechanisms of the respiratory response to PS are not yet fully elucidated, but may include non-specific and specific immune responses. CONCLUSIONS: Hairdressing is associated with a wide spectrum of respiratory adverse effects, of which bleaching products were indicated as the most hazardous. Preventive measures for reducing inhalatory exposure to PS in hair salons should be re-evaluated, including adopting occupational exposure limits at EU level, and encouraging use of safer bleach formulations. Managing tooth discolouration involves a range of different protocols for clinicians and patients in order to achieve an aesthetic result. There is an increasing public awareness in the appearance of their teeth and management of tooth discolouration may be inter-disciplinary and involve both vital and nonvital teeth. Vital teeth can be easily treated with low concentration hydrogen peroxide products safely and effectively using an external approach and trays. For endodontically treated teeth, the walking bleach technique with hydrogen releasing peroxide products is popular. However, there is an association with external cervical root resorption with higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide of 30%-35%. There are also regulatory considerations for the use of hydrogen peroxide in certain jurisdictions internationally. Prosthodontic treatments are more invasive and involve loss of tooth structure as well as a life cycle of further treatment in the future. This narrative review is based on searches on PubMed and the Cochrane library. Bleaching endodontically treated teeth can be considered a safe and effective protocol in the management of discoloured teeth. However, the association between bleaching and resorption remains unclear although there is likely to be a relation to prior trauma. It is prudent to avoid thermocatalytic approaches and to use a base/sealer to cover the root filling. An awareness expectations of patients and multidisciplinary treatment considerations is important in achieving the aesthetic result for the patient. It is likely that there will be an increasing demand for aesthetic whitening treatments. Bleaching of teeth has also become increasingly regulated although there are international differences in the use and concentration of bleaching agents.

Objective. The causes of internal posteruptive discoloration of teeth are bleeding, necroses, infections, and endodontic filling materials. The aim of this study was to establish the results of bleaching endodontically treated teeth using walking bleach, in-office, and combined techniques, using 30% carbamide peroxide and 35% hydrogen peroxide, as well as the effect of etiological factors, and the time elapsed after endodontic treatment on the success of bleaching. Materials and Methods. The research involved 30 endodontically treated teeth in healthy patients. Retroalveolar X-rays were taken to check the quality of root canal obturation. Endodontic treatment and obturation were carried out on the discolored non-vital teeth without any previous endodontic treatment. Before bleaching, two millimeters of the filling were removed from the root canal and the very entry into the canal was protected with glass ionomer cement. The teeth were divided into three groups, depending on the bleaching technique: walking bleach technique (10 patients), in-office technique (10 patients), and combined technique (10 patients). The teeth were bleached with 30% carbamide peroxide and 35% hydrogen peroxide. The bleaching procedure was repeated in all the patients three times. The color of all teeth was determined based on the Vita Classic guide before and after bleaching. The Χ2 square and Kruskal−Wallis tests were used to identify differences in teeth bleaching results. Results. A statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) was established between bleaching success and the time elapsed after endodontic treatment. There were no statistically significant differences observed between the bleaching success and etiological factors, bleaching techniques, or bleaching agents. Conclusions. The effectiveness of non-vital tooth bleaching is affected by the time elapsed after endodontic treatment.

Variety of treatment approaches have been proposed for esthetic management of dental fluorosis. Microabrasion, bleaching using hydrogen peroxide, and etch bleach seal are commonly used methods. Bleaching using sodium perborate has been used for intracoronal bleaching. Till now, no study has used sodium perborate for extracoronal bleaching of discolored stained teeth. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the esthetic improvement of non-pitted fluorosis stains using sodium perborate and compare with etch bleach seal, microabrasion and in-office bleaching with 30% H2O2 on visual assessment scale VAS (primary objective) and to assess any untoward effects including staining, sensitivity, gingival problems within the course of study (secondary objectives). STUDY DESIGN: A randomized control trial with 6 months follow up. Methodology- Twenty children aged 8 to 12 years with non-pitted fluorosis in upper anterior teeth were divided into 4 groups with 5 patients in each group. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: All of the techniques showed improvement in esthetics with VAS. However, microabrasion and bleaching using sodium perborate had significantly better results than other 2 techniques. CONCLUSION: Sodium perborate showed excellent results in extracoronal bleaching of fluorosed teeth. However a randomized study with large sample size is required to draw a definitive conclusion regarding superiority of one technique over others.

BACKGROUND: A household approach to decolonization decreases skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) incidence, though this is burdensome and costly. As prior SSTI increases risk for SSTI, we hypothesized that the effectiveness of decolonization measures to prevent SSTI when targeted to household members with prior year SSTI would be noninferior to decolonizing all household members. METHODS: Upon completion of our 12-month observational Household Observation of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the Environment (HOME) study, 102 households were enrolled in HOME2, a 12-month, randomized noninferiority trial. Pediatric index patients with community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) SSTI, their household contacts, and pets were enrolled. Households were randomized 1:1 to the personalized (decolonization performed only by household members who experienced SSTI during the HOME study) or household (decolonization performed by all household members) approaches. The 5-day regimen included hygiene education, twice-daily intranasal mupirocin, and daily bleach-water baths. At 5 follow-up visits in participants' homes, swabs to detect S. aureus were collected from participants, environmental surfaces, and pets; incident SSTIs were ascertained. RESULTS: Noninferiority of the personalized approach was established for the primary outcome 3-month cumulative SSTI: 23 of 212 (10.8%) participants reported SSTI in household approach households, while 23 of 236 (9.7%) participants reported SSTI in personalized approach households (difference in proportions, -1.1% [95% confidence interval, -6.7% to 4.5%]). In multivariable analyses, prior year SSTI and baseline MRSA colonization were associated with cumulative SSTI. CONCLUSIONS: The personalized approach was noninferior to the household approach in preventing SSTI. Future studies should interrogate longer durations of decolonization and/or decontamination of the household environment to reduce household MRSA burden. CLINICAL TRIALS REGISTRATION: NCT01814371.

Hypochlorite is often used as a disinfestant of fungal pathogens in a range of agricultural and horticultural settings. However, reports of its effectiveness are variable across studies and it is unclear what factors could potentially influence the reported estimates of its efficacy. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess the efficacy of hypochlorite against fungal pathogens and explore factors that may explain the observed heterogeneity in estimates of efficacy. Standardized mean effect size, Hedges' g, was calculated for each of the 109 selected studies, published from 1972 to 2019, that met the criteria defined for the systematic review. A random-effects model was used to estimate the overall mean effect size ([Formula: see text]) and determine the heterogeneity in g among studies. Hypochlorite resulted in a significant (P < 0.001) reduction in either disease intensity or propagule viability with [Formula: see text]= 2.25, suggesting a large overall effect. However, 95% prediction intervals ranged from -0.18 to 4.68, indicating that hypochlorite could be ineffective against some fungi or when targeting some substrate materials. An estimate of the within-study variability, τ2, was 1.48 and the proportion of heterogeneity in g among studies due to true effects was 71.5%. Inclusion of categorical moderator variables in the random effects model showed that hypochlorite treatments were significantly (P < 0.0062) more effective when used to disinfest spores in an aqueous solution ([Formula: see text]= 4.58) than when used on plastic ([Formula: see text]= 2.13), plant ([Formula: see text]= 2.13), and wood ([Formula: see text]= 0.79). Similarly, hypochlorite treatments were significantly (P < 0.0083) more effective in disinfesting fungal propagules of Thielaviopsis spp. ([Formula: see text]= 2.51) than those of Verticillium spp. ([Formula: see text]= 1.21). A meta-regression indicated that the effect of dose (ß = -3.54; P = 0.0398) and contact time (ß = -0.05; P = 0.0001) on [Formula: see text] were highly significant. Further, [Formula: see text]was significantly affected by the dose × time interaction (ß = -0.017; P = 0.0269). In the meta-regression models, dose and time explained 0 and 16% of the variance in true effects, respectively. In meta-regression models with a continuous variable of dose or time, a categorical variable of target or genus and their interaction term, genus and target explained an additional 7 to 19% of the variance in true effects. These results show that although the current recommended dose and contact time for commercial bleach products are expected to result in effective disinfestation, the target material and genera of the fungal pathogen of interest will likely influence their efficacy.

With an increasing use of indoor disinfectants such as chlorine (Cl2 ) and hypochlorous acid, a convenient sampler for estimating exposure to oxidants, such as effective chlorine, is necessary. Here, we developed a personal passive air sampler (PPAS) composed of a redox dye, o-dianisidine, in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sheet. o-Dianisidine readily reacts with gaseous oxidants generated by bleach usage, and its color changes as the reaction progresses; hence, personal exposure to effective chlorine could be easily detected by the naked eye, while cumulative exposure could be determined by measuring concentrations of o-dianisidine reacting with it. The PPAS was calibrated, and a sampling rate of 0.00253 m3 /h was obtained using a small test chamber. The PPAS was tested with the help of ten volunteers whose personal exposure to Cl2 -equivalent gas was estimated after bathrooms were cleaned using spray and liquid-type household disinfection products, and the accumulated exposure-gas concentrations ranged from 69 to 408 ppbv and 148 to 435 ppbv, respectively. These PPAS-derived exposure concentrations were approximately two orders lower than those estimated using ConsExpo, suggesting a significant overestimation by prevailing screening models, possibly due to the ignorance of transformation reactions.

Bleach products containing hypochlorite are commonly used as disinfectants to eliminate nonfungal plant pathogens from production surfaces, tools, plant surfaces, irrigation water, and produce dump tanks. Although bleach products are useful, their effectiveness has been reported to vary under specific settings. A meta-analysis was conducted of 86 studies to assess the overall efficacy of hypochlorite against plant pathogenic bacteria, oomycetes, and viruses and to identify factors that explain differences in product efficacy. Hypochlorite resulted in a significant (P < 0.0001) reduction in disease intensity or propagule viability, with a mean Hedges' g standardized difference ([Formula: see text]) of 3.01, indicating that overall, hypochlorite treatments are highly effective. However, heterogeneity in g was significant (P < 0.0001) between studies, wherein 69.8% of the variance observed in g was attributed to true effects. Furthermore, an estimate of between-study variability was moderate (τ2 = 1.46). Random effects (REs) metaregression showed limited effects of moderator variables dosage, contact time, targeted material of treatment, and organism type on product efficacy when all organism types were considered together. Because subgroup [Formula: see text] was significantly higher (P = 0.0070) for oomycetes ([Formula: see text] = 3.30) than for bacteria ([Formula: see text] = 2.19), subsequent metaregressions were performed by organism type. For oomycetes, five RE metaregression models, each containing two moderators and their interaction, resulted in significant (P = 0.05) effects, where models with dosage and time, dosage and genus, time and genus, dosage and target, and time and target accounted for ≤50, 71, 57, 48, and 47%, respectively, of the variance in true effect sizes (R2) associated with [Formula: see text]. For viruses, only the RE metaregression model containing time and target and their interaction resulted in significant (P = 0.0435) effects accounting for 38% of the variance in true effect sizes associated with [Formula: see text]. None of the RE metaregression models for bacteria were significant, although they still accounted for ≤28% of the variance in true effect sizes associated with [Formula: see text]. These results show that although the current recommended rates for dosage and contact time for commercial bleach products are generally expected to result in effective disinfestation, the efficacy against nonfungal plant pathogens is expected to be influenced by the organism type and target being treated with hypochlorite.
