RESUMEN

Geospatial online participatory tools, or geo-OPTs, are increasingly used worldwide for engaging the public in planning. Yet, despite growth in the adoption and use of geo-OPTs, and the growing scholarship to accompany it, our understanding of their ability to support public participation in environmental planning is still underdeveloped. In this paper, we investigate the application of a geo-OPT by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), a leading water management agency in the United States, in three contextually and geographically diverse cases. Through a combination of document analysis, interviews, and participant observation, we examine the processes and dynamics associated with the development and use of the geo-OPT Crowdsource Reporter. Our findings highlight the importance of managing geo-OPTs not in isolation or as a panacea but rather as part of a broader planning process that recognizes the complexity and significance of communication in geo-OPT processes. Although it may be tempting and seemingly simple to create and launch these online tools, our research reveals how a lack of intention early on may lead to underuse or misapplication of the tool. More significantly, real damage can be done, like increased public frustration and alienation, resulting in breakdown in communications or even worsening public relations for federal agencies.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Recto-colic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a frequent and serious complication of hematopoietic stem cell allogeneic transplantation, which is sometimes difficult to diagnose. The aim of our study was to identify histological diagnostic and prognostic criteria for recto-colic GVH. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Patients allografted at Amiens university hospital from 2012 to 2017 were retrieved. Those who had a recto-colic biopsy were included and divided into two groups (final diagnosis of GVH and non-GVH), then biopsies were reviewed by 2 pathologists. RESULTS: One hundred and nineteen patients were included. Sixty-seven were allocated to the GVH group and 52 to the non-GVH group. In the GVH group, we observed a significantly greater number of apoptotic bodies (AB) on standard HES staining and with the anti-Caspase 3 immunohistochemistry, cryptolytic AB abscesses, atrophy, regenerative glands and glands lined with eosinophilic cells (P<0.001). Anti-Caspase 3 immunohistochemistry revealed more AB than standard HES staining (P<0.005). But to differentiate GVH cases from non-GVH cases, we obtained a threshold value of 3.5 AB per 10 contiguous crypts on standard HE staining and with the anti-Caspase 3 immunohistochemistry. From 4 AB per 10 contiguous crypts, on HES staining and anti-Caspase 3 immunostaining, the diagnosis of GVH became consistent. No non-GVH case had more than 6 AB per 10 contiguous crypts. GVH patients with more than 8 AB per 10 contiguous crypts had a worse prognosis (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: We confirm the value of AB and their counting in the diagnosis of GVH, with a diagnostic threshold of 4 AB and a prognostic threshold of 8 AB. Glands lined with eosinophilic cells could be an additional diagnostic criterion in favor of GVH to be confirmed by further studies.

RESUMEN

One might think that the representation of the ageing body in film has evolved over the years, reflecting certain cultural and societal changes, as well as advances in the understanding of ageing. However, regardless of gender, older people are more likely than any other group to appear in film as comic antidotes to ageing, cultivating stereotypes of physical, cognitive and even sexual inefficiency.

RESUMEN

This article looks at the historical construction of knowledge about the elderly body from a medical perspective that is concerned with the materiality of the body and associated losses. It recalls, presents and analyses the paradigm of loss, decline and failure that dominates the way care is provided, and examines the issues associated with this domination. By presenting old age as a social construct produced by language and subject to values relating to a certain performance of the body, the author invites us to shift our perspective and take a finer, more complex and broader view of the body and the experience of being old.

RESUMEN

In psychiatry, psychomotricians can play an essential role in multidisciplinary teams. The specificity of their clinical vision and analysis, as well as their care tools, make them specialists in understanding the symptoms expressed by the body, and in body-mediated therapy. Able to propose interventions for patients in crisis, and to plan long-term care for stabilized chronic patients, they adapt to the temporality of the pathology. Committed to teamwork, they play their part in the multi-disciplinary weave of containing and structuring that the psychiatric institution confers on the most fragile patients.

RESUMEN

Despite its high prevalence among neurodegenerative diseases, Lewy body disease (LBD), or Lewy body dementia (LBD), because of its clinical proximity to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Better identification of this condition, in order to provide better care for sufferers and their carers, is a health objective on which progress is desirable.

RESUMEN

Sexuality is shaped by experience and by what has been passed down. Body image and sex influence desire and pleasure. In the case of endometriosis, suffering and pain can lead to shame and guilt. Encouraging people to talk to each other helps to create a free eroticism that resembles the couple.

RESUMEN

Military personnel experience elevated bone injury incidence, partly due to arduous and repetitive training. Non-traditional High-Intensity Interval Training-style (HIIT) may benefit pre-enlisted Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadet's musculoskeletal health and performance prior to military service. This study investigated 16 ROTC (n = 12 males; n = 4 females) and 15 physically active sex-, age-, and body mass-matched Controls' musculoskeletal health and performance from November to April. Total body, lumbar spine, and dual- hip dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans and 4%, 38%, 66% tibial peripheral quantitative computed tomography scans, blood draws (serum sclerostin and parathyroid hormone), and maximal muscle strength and aerobic capacity testing were completed. From November to April, ROTC improved bone density (DXA) of the dominant total hip and greater trochanter and non-dominant greater trochanter and 38% and 66% tibial total volumetric and cortical bone density (pQCT) similarly or more than Controls (all p ≤ 0.049). From November to April, ROTC also improved bench and leg press, and peak aerobic capacity (all p ≤ 0.013). From November to January, serum sclerostin increased (p ≤ 0.007) and remained elevated through April, while parathyroid hormone was unchanged. HIIT-style training induced positive musculoskeletal adaptations, suggesting it may be an excellent pre-service training modality for this injury prone group.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a compulsory one-year programme for graduates of tertiary schools including doctors. This study was conducted to find out the benefits and challenges of the programme among corps medical doctors as well as their treatment in their places of primary assignment (PPAs). The study would influence policymaking so as to improve the experiences of corps medical doctors and help NYSC to achieve its objectives. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 399 medical doctors doing their compulsory national youth service in Nigeria. The research instrument was developed by the researchers and pretested before use. The outcome variables were: overall benefit, overall challenge and overall PPA treatment. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square test using p < 0.05. RESULTS: Majority of respondents (83.5%) believed that the scheme offered one or more benefits to corps medical doctors (overall benefit). These benefits include exposure to new culture (47.6%), gaining medical/surgical skills (36.3%) and finding a lover/spouse (4.5%). Similarly, most of respondents (89.2%) reported one or more challenges (overall challenge). Some of the challenges reported include; no provision of accommodation (51.6%), poor remuneration (44.7%) and exploitation of corps doctors by their employers (41.4%). There was a statistically significant association between overall benefit and region of deployment (p value: 0.013). Region of deployment and marital status were found to have a statistically significant association with the overall challenge with p-values of 0.031 and < 0.001 respectively. Overall treatment at PPAs was mostly reported to be bad (77.2%) and it had a statistically significant association with marital status (p-value: 0.002) and religion (p-value: 0.024). CONCLUSION: Most respondents reported poor PPA treatment and this calls on the government and other stakeholders to take drastic measures to improve the welfare of corps medical doctors in order to positively influence their perception of the scheme and encourage their continued participation.

RESUMEN

Would-be adopters of ecosystem service analysis frameworks might ask, 'Do such frameworks improve ecosystem service provision or social benefits sufficiently to compensate for any extra effort?' Here we explore that question by retrospectively applying an ecosystem goods and services (EGS) analysis framework to a large river restoration case study conducted by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and comparing potential time costs and outcomes of traditional versus EGS-informed planning. USACE analytic methods can have a large influence on which river and wetland restoration projects are implemented in the United States because they affect which projects or project elements are eligible for federal cost-share funding. A new framework is designed for the USACE and is primarily distinguished from current procedures by adding explicit steps to document and compare tradeoffs and complementarity among all affected EGS, rather than the subset that falls within project purposes. Further, it applies economic concepts to transform ecological performance indicators into social benefit indicators, even if changes cannot be valued. We conclude that, for large multi-partner restoration projects like our case study, using the framework provides novel information on social outcomes that could be used to enhance project design, without substantially increasing scoping costs. The primary benefits of using the framework in the case study appeared to stem from early comprehensive identification of stakeholder interests that might have prevented project delays late in the process, and improving the communication of social benefits and how tradeoffs among EGS benefits were weighed during planning.

RESUMEN

Purpose: Barriers in research for women and dietitians have been documented. We sought to describe tri-council funding awarded within the nutrition discipline according to institution type, academic rank, gender, dietitian status, and primary research methods used. Methods: Using an online search methodology, faculty members with research appointments were identified from nutrition departments offering accredited dietetic programs and/or at Canada's collective of research-intensive universities known as U15. All data regarding faculty members, their institutions, and funding were collected through publicly available websites and Scopus. Tri-council funding associated with the nominated principal investigator, from a 5-year period, 2013-2014 to 2017-2018, was extracted. Binary logistic regression was used to test for predictors of receiving any tri-council operating funds within the 5-year period. Results: Faculty members (n = 237) from 21 institutions were identified for inclusion. Those from U15 institutions, at the full professor rank, nondietitians, men, and those who engaged in primarily quantitative research methods (vs. qualitative or mixed-methods) were significantly more likely to hold any tri-council funding during the eligible period. Dietitians (n = 76) were significantly less likely to hold tri-council funding, independent of institution, rank, gender, and primary research methods utilized. Conclusions: The apparent under-funding of academic dietitians from federal tri-council sources requires exploration.

RESUMEN

The body takes care of us in the sense that it ensures our biological existence while incorporating the information necessary for motor activity and emotional life. Through contact with the world and others, it awakens our self-awareness. These interactions produce an incorporation of information that enables us to adapt our bodies to our environment, and our attitudes to interactions with others. This incorporation enriches the plasticity of our abilities and body awareness.

RESUMEN

The body approach is a real challenge in nursing training. It is part of the relationship between the caregiver and the cared-for. Through their bodies, students experience all their sensations and perceptions. Questioning nursing students through the phenomenological approach of sophrology means enabling them to achieve body-mind harmonization, a fundamental pillar of this mind-body technique. The regular practice of sophrology teaches them to act autonomously on themselves, developing their personal resources for a better body-mind and/or mind-body well-being.

RESUMEN

The theme of touch is present in many contemporary issues. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the introduction of barrier gestures had an impact on touch, to the point of prohibiting it. Touch is essential to health care, and retains a fundamental place in the healing professions, particularly osteopathy.

RESUMEN

Conversion disorder is a psychiatric disorder whose clinic and management lie at the crossroads between body and mind. It challenges healthcare professionals in terms of diagnosis, further investigation, referral and care. A number of questions arise, such as how caregivers perceive the relationship between body and mind, the place of the psychiatric hypothesis among the initial diagnostic hypotheses, and the temporality of care.

RESUMEN

This paper presents a new scheme of applying CORPS (coherently radiating periodic structures) for reducing the number of phase shifters in linear antenna arrays. This scheme can be seen as a combination of the properties of two techniques: CORPS and butler. The proposed system applies an interleaving of several blocks of 2 × 3 CORPS networks. This interleaving of two stages of 2 × 3 CORPS networks is made in a convenient way to provide the required progressive phase for beam-scanning and the level of amplitude excitations necessary for achieving the radiation characteristics of low SLL. Interesting results are provided based on experimental measurements and full-wave simulations to analyze and evaluate the performance of the feeding network based on CORPS and the reduction capability of the number of phase shifters in the antenna system. The proposed design methodology achieves a reduction capability of 66% in the number of phase shifters used in linear antenna arrays. This reduction in the complexity of the antenna system is reached maintaining a peak SLL of -22 dB with scanning ranges of until ±25°. A good design option is provided to simplify the complexity of the feeding network in antenna array applications.

RESUMEN

This paper presents the application of CORPS (coherently radiating periodic structures) for feeding CRA (concentric rings array) with a reduced number of phase shifters. The proposed design technique for the structure of concentric rings provides a better scanning capability with respect to other existing configurations. This design technique utilizes 2 × 3 or 4 × 7 CORPS networks depending on the configuration or the number of antenna elements in the phased array system. These CORPS networks are set strategically in the feeding network to provide several advantages with respect to others in the scanning capability and the reduction of the number of phase shifters of the array system. The contribution of this paper is the full antenna system design of phased CRA for analyzing scanning and the reduction of phase shifters. The proposed phased array reduces the number of phase shifter devices in CRA for a scanning range of ±25° in the elevation plane. Differential evolution (DE) was applied to optimize the amplitudes of the proposed system. Several design cases were analyzed using full-wave simulation results to verify the phased array model and to take mutual coupling into account. Full-wave simulation results provide radiation patterns with low SLL in all scanning directions. The proposed phased array was validated by experimental measurements of the full antenna system prototype.

RESUMEN

The life of young girls and boys with congenital breast and thoracic malformations is more a matter of survival than of living, burdened by severe body image damage. Positively changing their lives is what these girls or young men are calling us to do. Our duty is certainly to understand their malformation, but also to understand its repercussions and thus to draw the most appropriate treatment. It is in this perspective that this report should be read.
