RESUMEN

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project collection is a group of approximately 120 DNP projects archived between 2017 and 2022 in Health Sciences Research Commons (HSRC), the health sciences institutional repository (IR) for the George Washington University. Our project focused on expanding avenues for the dissemination of DNP projects beyond our Digital Commons IR by integrating this content into the library's instances of Ex Libris Alma and Primo VE. By utilizing the Ex Libris Repository type import profile rather than the OAI-PMH feed, we identified enhanced opportunities for content discovery while likewise retaining better control over individual item records.

RESUMEN

Background: Health sciences libraries in medical schools, academic health centers, health care networks, and hospitals have established institutional repositories (IRs) to showcase their research achievements, increase visibility, expand the reach of institutional scholarship, and disseminate unique content. Newer roles for IRs include publishing open access journals, tracking researcher productivity, and serving as repositories for data sharing. Many repository managers oversee their IR with limited assistance from others at their institution. Therefore, IR practitioners find it valuable to network and learn from colleagues at other institutions. Case Presentation: This case report describes the genesis and implementation of a new initiative specifically designed for a health sciences audience: the Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL) Symposium. Six medical librarians from hospitals and academic institutions in the U.S. organized the inaugural symposium held virtually in November 2021. The goal was to fill a perceived gap in conference programming for IR practitioners in health settings. Themes of the 2021 and subsequent 2022 symposium included IR management, increasing readership and engagement, and platform migration. Post-symposium surveys were completed by 73/238 attendees (31%) in 2021 and by 62/180 (34%) in 2022. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Discussion: Participant responses in post-symposium surveys rated MIRL highly. The MIRL planning group intends to continue the symposium and hopes MIRL will steadily evolve, build community among IR practitioners in the health sciences, and expand the conversation around best practices for digital archiving of institutional content. The implementation design of MIRL serves as a blueprint for collaboratively bringing together a professional community of practice.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The European Parliament's directive on open data indicates the direction to follow for all public institutions in Europe. The portal Polish Platform of Medical Research (PPM) required more information about researcher attitudes and training requirements for strategic planning. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to assess (1) the status of knowledge about research data management among medical researchers in Poland, and (2) their attitudes towards data sharing. This knowledge may help to inform a training program and adapt PPM to the requirements of researchers. METHODS: The authors circulated an online survey and received responses from 603 researchers representing medical sciences and related disciplines. The survey was conducted in 2019 at seven Polish medical universities and at the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine. Analysis used descriptive statistics. RESULTS: Data sharing was not widespread (55.7% only shared with their research team, 9.8% had shared data on an open access basis). Many cited possible benefits of research data sharing but were concerned about drawbacks (e.g. fraud, plagiarism). DISCUSSION: Polish medical scientists, like many researchers, are not aware of the processes required for safe data preparation for sharing. Academic libraries should develop roles for data librarians to help train researchers. CONCLUSION: Fears about the dangers of data sharing need to be overcome before researchers are willing to share their own research data.

RESUMEN

Library staff at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell implemented a digital repository to collect and showcase the scholarly output of the medical school and the Northwell Health system. This repository, entitled Zucker School of Medicine Academic Works, promotes scholarship by faculty, trainees, and staff via a centralized public website. With links to the full text and faculty profiles, the repository facilitates access and discoverability in alignment with the value of scholarship at the institution. Subsequent implementation of a research information management system to harvest publications further enhances the goals of tracking, promoting, and reporting impact of the scholarly activities. This article reviews successes and challenges, and collaboration with other stakeholder departments.

RESUMEN

Institutional repositories (IRs) collect, preserve, and disseminate the scholarly output of an organization. Though common in academic settings, they are less so in hospitals or health care systems. The librarians for Aurora Health Care decided to create a primarily citation-level IR to organize and promote the scholarly output of Aurora faculty, residents, and fellows using the proprietary software Digital Commons, a product of the company bepress. The repository also hosts a newly published peer-reviewed journal and includes digitized historical images and institutional memorabilia. Suggested alternatives are given for hospitals or health care systems that may not currently be able to pursue a full-fledged IR.

RESUMEN

Open access repositories have become more widely used for the dissemination of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) scholarly projects nationally and internationally. This article shares lessons learned from five years of experience with using an institutional repository, archiving and showcasing over 100 full-text DNP projects in the collection. The aims of this article are to examine the advantages of disseminating DNP scholarly projects through an Open Access (OA) repository and to explore how items archived in OA repositories complement traditional publishing models as supplementary parts of the research ecosystem. Items from the collection have been downloaded over 72,000 times at over 3700 institutions in 182 countries around the globe. Archiving DNP projects in an OA collection can improve health care practices by augmenting the dissemination of practice outcomes in traditional peer-reviewed literature. This article provides guidance for those looking to establish and evaluate similar collections, highlighting lessons learned.

RESUMEN

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) faculty at the George Washington University (GW) decided to create a digital DNP Project Repository for our students in 2016 based on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) 2015 recommendations to do so. We describe the two-year process during which the DNP faculty and the GW librarians at our Health Sciences Library collaborated to create the DNP project repository. This article contains important information that was learned about digital institutional repositories, the criteria used in deciding to make the GW library's Health Sciences Research Commons the home for the repository, along with questions and concerns that arose during the process. Our library internally collaborated to customize the digital collection to meet the needs of DNP students and their project teams. Development included creating the URL for the collection, customizing digital metadata fields, developing submission forms and guidelines, and adding embargo options for projects. A pilot collection of six DNP projects was completed in 2017; and in 2018, the first cohort of 34 students submitted their projects to our repository. Outcomes are reported of the repository launch, lessons learned, and repository submission experiences of two DNP students. We believe our journey may guide others.
