RESUMEN

Agricultural soils play a dual role in regulating the Earth's climate by releasing or sequestering carbon dioxide (CO2 ) in soil organic carbon (SOC) and emitting non-CO2 greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as nitrous oxide (N2 O) and methane (CH4 ). To understand how agricultural soils can play a role in climate solutions requires a comprehensive assessment of net soil GHG balance (i.e., sum of SOC-sequestered CO2 and non-CO2 GHG emissions) and the underlying controls. Herein, we used a model-data integration approach to understand and quantify how natural and anthropogenic factors have affected the magnitude and spatiotemporal variations of the net soil GHG balance in U.S. croplands during 1960-2018. Specifically, we used the dynamic land ecosystem model for regional simulations and used field observations of SOC sequestration rates and N2 O and CH4 emissions to calibrate, validate, and corroborate model simulations. Results show that U.S. agricultural soils sequestered 13.2 ± 1.16 $$ 13.2\pm 1.16 $$ Tg CO2 -C year-1 in SOC (at a depth of 3.5 m) during 1960-2018 and emitted 0.39 ± 0.02 $$ 0.39\pm 0.02 $$ Tg N2 O-N year-1 and 0.21 ± 0.01 $$ 0.21\pm 0.01 $$ Tg CH4 -C year-1 , respectively. Based on the GWP100 metric (global warming potential on a 100-year time horizon), the estimated national net GHG emission rate from agricultural soils was 122.3 ± 11.46 $$ 122.3\pm 11.46 $$ Tg CO2 -eq year-1 , with the largest contribution from N2 O emissions. The sequestered SOC offset ~28% of the climate-warming effects resulting from non-CO2 GHG emissions, and this offsetting effect increased over time. Increased nitrogen fertilizer use was the dominant factor contributing to the increase in net GHG emissions during 1960-2018, explaining ~47% of total changes. In contrast, reduced cropland area, the adoption of agricultural conservation practices (e.g., reduced tillage), and rising atmospheric CO2 levels attenuated net GHG emissions from U.S. croplands. Improving management practices to mitigate N2 O emissions represents the biggest opportunity for achieving net-zero emissions in U.S. croplands. Our study highlights the importance of concurrently quantifying SOC-sequestered CO2 and non-CO2 GHG emissions for developing effective agricultural climate change mitigation measures.

Bats frequently inhabit caves and other subterranean habitats and play a critical role in subterranean food webs. With escalating threats to subterranean ecosystems, identifying the most effective measures to protect subterranean-roosting bats is critical. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation and management interventions for subterranean-roosting bats. We used network analyses to determine to what extent interventions for bats overlap those used for other subterranean taxa. We conducted our analyses with data extracted from 345 papers recommending a total of 910 conservation interventions. Gating of roost entrances was applied to preserve bat populations in 21 studies, but its effectiveness was unclear. Habitat restoration and disturbance reduction positively affected bat populations and bat behavior, respectively, in ≤4 studies. Decontamination was assessed in 2 studies and positively affected bat populations, particularly in studies focused on reducing fungal spores associated with white-nose syndrome in North America. Monitoring of bat populations as an effective conservation strategy was unclear and infrequently tested. Only 4% of bat studies simultaneously considered other subterranean organisms. However, effective interventions for bat conservation had similarities with all other organisms. If other subterranean organisms are considered when applying interventions to conserve bats, they might also benefit.


Conservación eficiente de murciélagos subterráneos Resumen Es común que los murciélagos habiten en cuevas y otros hábitats subterráneos y contribuyan a las redes alimenticias bajo tierra. Ya que estos ecosistemas cada vez se enfrentan a más amenazas, es importante identificar las medidas más efectivas para proteger a los murciélagos subterráneos. Realizamos un metaanálisis para evaluar la eficiencia de la conservación y las intervenciones de manejo para estos mamíferos. Usamos un análisis de redes para determinar el grado al que las intervenciones en pro de los murciélagos se traslapan con aquellas usadas para otros taxones subterráneos. Realizamos nuestros análisis con datos extraídos de 345 artículos que recomendaban 910 intervenciones de conservación. Se aplicó la colocación de compuertas en la entrada de los dormideros para conservar la población de murciélagos en 21 estudios, pero no quedó clara su efectividad. La restauración del hábitat y la reducción de las perturbaciones afectaron, respectivamente, a las poblaciones y al comportamiento de los murciélagos en ≤ 4 cuatro estudios. Se evaluó a la desinfección en dos estudios y ésta tuvo un efecto positivo sobre las poblaciones, particularmente en los estudios enfocados en la reducción de esporas micóticas asociadas con el síndrome de nariz blanca en América del Norte. La eficiencia del monitoreo de las poblaciones de murciélagos como una estrategia de conservación no fue clara y casi nunca se evaluó. Sólo el 4% de los estudios sobre murciélagos consideró simultáneamente a otros organismos subterráneos. Sin embargo, las intervenciones eficientes para la conservación de murciélagos tuvieron similitudes con las de todos los demás organismos. Otros organismos pueden beneficiarse si se les considera cuando se aplican las intervenciones para conservar a los murciélagos.

Almost 60% of all ammonia (NH3) emissions are from livestock manure. Understanding the sources and magnitude of NH3 emissions from manure systems is critical to implement mitigation strategies. This study models 13 archetypical conventional (5 farms), organic (5 farms), and grazing (3 farms) dairy farms to estimate NH3 emissions from manure at the barn, storage, and after land application. Mitigation practices related to management of the herd, crop production, and manure are subsequently modeled to quantify the change in NH3 emissions from manure by comparing archetypical practices with these alternative practices. A mass balance of nutrients is also conducted. Emissions per tonne of excreted manure for the manure system (barn, storage, and land application) range from 3.0 to 4.4 g of NH3 for conventional farms, 3.5 to 4.4 g of NH3 for organic farms, and 3.4 to 3.9 g of NH3 for grazing farms. For all farm types, storage and land application are the main sources of NH3 emissions from manure. In general, solid manures have higher emission intensities due to higher pH during storage (pH = 7.4 for liquid, 7.8 for slurry, and 8.5 for solid manure) and lower infiltration rates after land application when compared with slurry and liquid manures. The most effective management practices to reduce NH3 emissions from manure systems are combining solid-liquid separation with manure injection (up to 49% reduction in NH3 emissions), followed by injection alone, and reducing crude protein in the dairy ration, especially in organic and grazing farms that have grazing and forages as the main component of the dairy ration. This study also shows that the intensity of NH3 emissions from manure depends significantly on the functional unit and presents results per manure excreted, total solids in excreted manure, animal units, and fat- and protein-corrected milk.

Implementing biosecurity protocols is necessary to reduce the spread of disease on dairy farms. In Ontario biosecurity implementation is variable among farms, and the barriers to implementing biosecurity are unknown. Thirty-five semistructured interviews were conducted between July 2022 and January 2023 with dairy producers (n = 17) and veterinarians (n = 18). Participants also completed a demographic survey. Thematic analysis was performed with constructivist and grounded theory paradigms. Thematic coding was done inductively using NVivo software. Dairy producers' understanding of the definition of biosecurity varied, with all understanding that it was to prevent the spread of disease. Furthermore, the most common perception was that biosecurity prevented the spread of disease onto the farm. Both veterinarians and producers stated that closed herds were one of the most important biosecurity protocols. Barriers to biosecurity implementation included a lack of resources, internal and external business influencers, individual perceptions of biosecurity, and a lack of industry initiative. Understanding the barriers producers face provides veterinarians with the chance to tailor their communication to ensure barriers are reduced or for other industry members to reduce the barriers.

Straw return is an effective measure to promote sustainable agriculture by significantly improving soil fertility. At present, few studies have been conducted on the most effective carbon enhancing management measures for various crops. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis using data collected from 184 literature sources, comprising 3297 data sets to analyze the carbon increase effects of straw returning in three main crops (rice, maize, and wheat) in China and to explore the influence mechanism of natural factors, soil properties, straw return measures, and cropping systems on the carbon enhancement effect. The study showed that straw return significantly increased soil organic carbon and the rate of increase was higher for wheat at 15.88% (14.74%-17.03%) than for rice at 12.7% (11.5%-13.91%) and maize at 12.42% (11.42%-13.42%), with varying degrees of improvement in other soil physicochemical properties. Natural factors have the greatest impact on the carbon increasing effect of rice fields, reaching 28.8%, especially at temperature between 10 °C and 15 °C, less than 800 mm precipitation, low latitude, and short frost-free period. Maize and wheat are most affected by soil properties, reaching 41% and 34.5% respectively. Furthermore, field management practices also play a pivotal role, organic carbon increasing obviously was observed when the C/N ratio of exogenous nutrients is bigger than 20 with the low initial organic matter. Shallow tillage and less than 7.5 t hm-2 straw returning with 3-10 years to the field are ideal for rice and maize. Crop rotation, especially in drylands, increased soil organic carbon more significantly than continuous. The results of our analysis can provide valuable insights into the effect of straw return on carbon increase. In the future, the soil carbon can be improved by adopting rational cropping patterns and straw return measures with taking into account climate and soil characteristics for different crops.

Agricultural and urban management practices (MPs) are primarily designed and implemented to reduce nutrient and sediment concentrations in streams. However, there is growing interest in determining if MPs produce any unintended positive effects, or co-benefits, to instream biological and habitat conditions. Identifying co-benefits is challenging though because of confounding variables (i.e., those that affect both where MPs are applied and stream biota), which can be accounted for in novel causal inference approaches. Here, we used two causal inference approaches, propensity score matching (PSM) and Bayesian network learning (BNL), to identify potential MP co-benefits in the Chesapeake Bay watershed portion of Maryland, USA. Specifically, we examined how MPs may modify instream conditions that impact fish and macroinvertebrate indices of biotic integrity (IBI) and functional and taxonomic endpoints. We found evidence of positive unintended effects of MPs for both benthic macroinvertebrates and fish indicated by higher IBI scores and specific endpoints like the number of scraper macroinvertebrate taxa and lithophilic spawning fish taxa in a subset of regions. However, our results also suggest MPs have negative unintended effects, especially on sensitive benthic macroinvertebrate taxa and key instream habitat and water quality metrics like specific conductivity. Overall, our results suggest MPs offer co-benefits in some regions and catchments with largely degraded conditions but can have negative unintended effects in some regions, especially in catchments with good biological conditions. We suggest the number and types of MPs drove these mixed results and highlight carefully designed MP implementation that incorporates instream biological data at the catchment scale could facilitate co-benefits to instream biological conditions. Our study underscores the need for more research on identifying effects of individual MP types on instream biological and habitat conditions.

Best management practices (BMPs) have been extensively employed in effective watershed management for non-point source pollution. The weights of objective functions and the restrictive conditions of combined BMPs are the vital requirements for BMPs allocation. Therefore, it is more beneficial to explore that a spatial optimal allocation method considering multi-attribute decision making and multiple BMPs random combination. Here is the novel framework based on Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-Ⅱ), which considers multiple objectives in deriving watershed-scale pollution control practices by considering BMPs cost and combined reduction rates of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). The framework also integrates combined Entropy Weight method (EWM) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) to solve the weights of TN and TP, and considers the attributes of the sub-basin itself, which is more local suitability. Four categories of BMPs, tillage management, nutrient management, vegetative filter strips, and landscape management, were evaluated in the Jing River Basin (JRB) and resulted in reduction rates of 9.77%, 10.53%, 16.40%, and 14.27% averagely, respectively. BMP allocation schemes, derived from multi-objective optimization, are stratified into three financial scenarios. Low-cost scenario, costing up to 2 billion RMB, primarily targets the grain for green program in 28.81% of sub-basins. Medium-cost scenario, between 2 and 6 billion RMB, predominantly utilizes the grain for green in areas with a slope greater than 15°, accounting for 20.00% of sub-basins. High-cost scenario exceeds 6 billion RMB, mainly due to the implementation of multiple combination measures. The three configuration scenarios can provide decision-makers with a trade-off between measure costs and reduction efficiency. Overall, the innovative framework not only facilitates cost-effective implementation but provides a beneficial methodology for selecting cost-effective conservation practices in other regions.

Sustainable development goals and rising sustainability concerns push stakeholders and society to demand organizations adopt innovative practices that can contribute to business sustainability. This study aims to provide a systematic review through comprehensive bibliometric analysis of almost 1st quarter of the 21st century. The main focus is on how green human resource management practices promote and have a relationship with environmental performance, which is a significant part of sustainability. The authors systematically reviewed 242 top-tier articles from Scopus and Web of Science databases by following the "preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses" methodology. A significant relationship began in 2015 and gained popularity after COVID-19. The studies suggest that management should embrace the most demanding green human resource management practices, such as green competence building, motivation enhancement, and employee involvement, for better environmental performance. So, organizations can help acquire and retain committed and eco-friendly employees whose ecological values and objectives are compatible with the organization. The study also provides insight into the role of green human resource management practices in fostering eco-friendly behaviour of employees that, in turn, influence environmental performance. Most authors used the theory of ability-motivation-opportunity, a supporting mechanism for how organizations protect the environment through adopting green human resource management practices. In the future, corporate environmental responsibility, environmental regulations intensity, pro-environmental behaviour, and green work-life balance are suggested mechanisms to enhance environmental performance through green human resource management practices.

Field drainage causes habitat loss, alters natural flow regimes, and impairs water quality. Still, drainage ditches often are last remnants of aquatic and wetland habitats in agricultural landscapes and as such, can be important for local biodiversity. Two-stage channels are considered as a greener choice for conventional ditches, as they are constructed to mimic the structure of natural lowland streams providing a channel for drainage water and mechanisms to decrease diffuse loading. Two-stage channels could also benefit local biodiversity and ecosystem functions, but existing information on their ecological benefits is scarce and incomplete. We collected environmental and biological data from six agricultural stream systems in Finland each with consequent sections of a conventional ditch and a two-stage channel to study the potential of two-stage channels to enhance aquatic and riparian biodiversity and ecological functions. Biological data included samples of stream invertebrates, diatoms and plants and riparian beetles and plants. Overall, both section types were highly dominated by few core taxa for most of the studied organism groups. Riparian plant and invertebrate communities seemed to benefit from the two-stage channel structure with adjacent floodplains and drier ditch banks. In addition, two-stage channel sections had higher aquatic plant diversity, algal productivity, and decomposition rate, but lower stream invertebrate and diatom diversity. Two-stage channel construction did not diversify the structure of stream channels which is likely one explanation for the lack of positive effects on benthic diversity. However, both section types harbored unique taxa found only in one of the two types in all studied organism groups resulting in higher local gamma diversity. Thus, two-stage channels enhanced local biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. Improvements especially in aquatic biodiversity might be achieved by increasing the heterogeneity of in-stream habitat structure and with further efforts to decrease nutrient and sediment loads.

Promoting conservation on rented farmland is a challenge for stakeholders working with non-operating landowners (NOLs) and tenant farmers (operators). We conducted an online survey to identify stakeholders who engage with NOLs, and understand how their positioning as 'intermediaries' could be leveraged to help bridge the NOL-operator communication gap. A majority of identified stakeholders/intermediaries worked in government agencies, university extension, law firms, or farm management companies. Intermediaries believed that NOLs trusted them for several conservation activities, however, they believed that NOLs were more influenced by operators than by intermediaries. The message that engaging in conservation can help preserve the farm for future generation was perceived to be influential in motivating NOLs. Our findings suggest the need for a holistic approach to engage NOLs by accounting for trust in and influence of intermediaries and operators, and the salience of conservation messages and messaging when promoting conservation behaviors on rented farmlands.
