RESUMEN

In this study, scalp tissues from Korean adults between 20 and 80 without skin disease were used. Scalp tissues were processed, and hair follicles were isolated and cultured with different treatments (including Bioscalp, Ultra Exo Booster, and Ultra S Line Plus) from Ultra V company. Over 12 days, observations and measurements of hair follicle characteristics were recorded at intervals (Days 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12). The study assessed the impact of these substances on hair follicle growth and morphology. Bioscalp, combined with Ultra Exo Booster and Ultra S Line Plus, showed significant hair elongation in ex vivo. Preservation of hair bulb diameter was observed, indicating potential for sustained hair growth by exosome-based products. The hair growth cycle analysis suggested a lower transition to the catagen stage in test products from Ultra V compared to non-treated groups. The research findings indicated that the tested formulations, especially the combination of Bioscalp, Ultra Exo Booster, and Ultra S Line Plus, demonstrated significant effectiveness in promoting hair growth, maintaining the integrity of the hair bulb, and reducing the transition to the catagen stage. The study suggests promising alternative treatments for hair loss, illustrating results that were as good as those of the conventional testing product groups.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of mesotherapy in patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS: The study included 43 patients (56 knees) who were randomly assigned to either the mesotherapy group (MG, n=28) or the saline group (SG, n=28) and received a total of 4 weekly mesotherapy (MG) or saline injections (SG). Pain, functional status and quality of life were evaluated by a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Western Ontario Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and the Short Form-36 (SF-36) subscales at baseline and at 8 and 16 weeks of follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 39 patients (52 knees) completed the study. Eight weeks after treatment, a significant improvement was found in VAS pain scores, WOMAC scores and physical component scores (PCS) of the SF-36 in both groups compared to baseline (p<0.05). The VAS activity pain score, WOMAC-pain, WOMAC-physical function and WOMAC-total scores were found to have decreased significantly in the MG compared to the SG (p<0.001) at both 8 weeks and 16 weeks. The PCS scores significantly improved in the MG compared to the SG at 8- and 16-week follow-ups (p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Mesotherapy is a well-tolerated, safe and effective alternative treatment option in patients with mild and moderate KOA.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Mesotherapy, a technique of transdermal microinjections of specific preparations, is increasingly used in fields such as dermatology and specifically for alopecia treatment. Its popularity stems from its ability to deliver drugs in a targeted manner while minimizing systemic side effects. OBJECTIVE: To assess and review current knowledge regarding the use of mesotherapy to deliver alopecia medications and highlight future directions for research. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors used research databases including PubMed and Google Scholar to identify current literature on mesotherapy and alopecia. The following search terms were used among other terms: "Mesotherapy" or "Intradermal" AND "Alopecia". RESULTS: Recent studies are promising for the intradermal delivery of dutasteride and minoxidil in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. CONCLUSION: Although limitations exist with dutasteride and minoxidil therapies, further research regarding the preparation, delivery, and maintenance of these drugs is warranted as mesotherapy could establish this technique as a safe, effective, and viable treatment option for androgenetic alopecia.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Physiologic gingival hyperpigmentation is a common esthetic concern that affects individuals of various ethnicities, and can have a significant impact on individual's self-confidence and overall quality of life. Thus, this study aimed to clinically assess the effectiveness of intra-mucosal injection of vitamin C versus 980 nm diode laser for the management of physiologic gingival hyperpigmentation. METHODS: Twenty-six healthy non-smoker individuals with physiologic gingival hyperpigmentation were randomly assigned to two groups. Group I received intra-mucosal injection of vitamin C (L-Ascorbic acid 1000 mg/5 ml), and group II was managed using diode laser (980 nm, 1.5 W, continuous wave mode). Clinical evaluation of pigmentation intensity and distribution was performed preoperatively, and at 1, 2 and 3 months postoperatively using two different color assessment indices; Dummett-Gupta Oral Pigmentation Index (DOPI), and Gingival Pigmentation Index (GPI). Additionally, the study assessed pain intensity and patients' satisfaction. RESULTS: Pigmentation scores decreased significantly between pre-operative visit and different follow-up visits for both treatment modalities (p < 0.0001*). When compared to the vitamin C mesotherapy group, the laser group demonstrated significantly lower gingival pigmentation scores (p < 0.0001*). However, both treatment modalities were equally satisfying for the patients. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin C mesotherapy and diode laser are both effective in the management of physiologic gingival hyperpigmentation. While diode laser yields better and earlier results, vitamin C mesotherapy offers a cost-effective, safe and minimally invasive approach that is equally satisfying for the patients seeking esthetic enhancements. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05608057) on (01/11/2022).

RESUMEN

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common form of non-cicatricial alopecia in both genders. Currently approved drugs for the treatment of AGA include topical minoxidil in women and topical minoxidil and oral finasteride in men. Other routes of administration of approved drugs have been proposed to enhance therapeutic results for AGA, including intradermal injections, known as mesotherapy. Mesotherapy-or intradermotherapy-is a non-surgical procedure, consisting of multiple intradermal injections of pharmacological substances diluted in small doses. Although minimally invasive, mesotherapy may be related to mild side effects like burning, erythema and headaches, as a few reports indicate. Among the most serious adverse events, subcutaneous necrosis, scalp abscesses, and angioedema have been described. This multicenter retrospective, descriptive study aims to report 14 cases of frontal edema resulting from mesotherapy for AGA treatment. In our patients, the edema mostly arose in the first two sessions and lasted between 1 and 4 days, with a favorable outcome after a local cold compress. In all our cases of edema, lidocaine was the anesthetic used. Minoxidil and dutasteride might also play a role as causative agents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest case series focused on frontal edema after mesotherapy for AGA and gives clinicians helpful information for when performing this technique. Dermatologists should already consider and be conscious of this possible mesotherapy side effect, as it can be remarkably disruptive to affected patients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Cosmetic procedures for antiaging carry inherent risks of adverse events. One that has not yet been well characterized is transitory or permanent alopecia. This is attributable to numerous mechanisms including pressure, ischemia, inflammation, and necrosis. Cases of postcosmetic procedure alopecia have been reported after mesotherapy as well as hyaluronic acid filler, deoxycholic acid, and botulinum toxin injections. OBJECTIVE: This review serves to describe the currently known causes of postcosmetic procedure alopecia and the mechanisms by which alopecia is attained. Furthermore, this review highlights the risk of unregulated mesotherapy injections for cosmetic enhancement and to bring attention to the increasing number reports of alopecia after these procedures. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature from 2000 to 2022 was conducted looking for keywords such as "alopecia," "cosmetic procedures," "mesotherapy," and "hyaluronic acid" in Google Scholar and PubMed. RESULTS: Ten articles met the criteria set forth in the authors' literature review. Many of the procedures resulted in partial or complete resolution of alopecia. CONCLUSION: Alopecia after cosmetic injection procedures is an underreported adverse effect. More research is needed to further characterize the risk of alopecia after mesotherapy and other injection procedures.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: 5-alpha inhibitors are an effective treatment for androgenetic alopecia. Mesotherapy with dutasteride has been proposed as an effective method to improve hair loss and reducing systemic absorption. OBJECTIVE: The main objective was to describe the safety profile of mesotherapy with dutasteride in real clinical practice in a large cohort of patients with androgenetic alopecia. A secondary aim was to describe the effectiveness of this treatment. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A multicentric retrospective study was designed. Patients treated with at least 6 months of follow-up were included in the study. Side effects and response to the treatment were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 541 patients were included. The commonest approach during the first year was to perform the treatment every 3 months. Response to the mesotherapy in monotherapy could be assessed in 86 patients (15.9%) after one year. Most of them presented clinical improvement, being a marked improvement in 33 patients (38.4%). Pain was the most frequent side effect of the treatment (246 patients, 45.5%). No serious or sexual adverse events were detected. CONCLUSION: Mesotherapy with dutasteride was effective in male and female hair loss in real clinical practice. Side effects related to the treatment were mild and self-limited. This therapy may be an effective option for select patients wishing to avoid oral treatment. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although energy devices and botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) can alleviate age-related laxity, ptosis, and platysmal bands, they have limited efficacy on horizontal neck lines. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy, safety, and subject satisfaction of a combined treatment of non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA) compound filling plus mesotherapy for the correction of horizontal neck lines, in comparison with BTX-A. METHODS: This multicenter, randomized, evaluator-blinded, prospective study enrolled female patients with moderate-to-severe horizontal neck lines corrected with either 2 or 3 sessions of of non-cross-linked HA compound filling plus mesotherapy or 1 session of BTX-A injection. Improvement of the neck lines grades, Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS), patient satisfaction, and adverse events (AEs) were evaluated and compared at 1, 3, 6, and 10 months after the final treatment. RESULTS: Twenty-five patients received HA filling plus mesotherapy and 23 received BTX-A injection. Compared with BTX-A, the HA compound filling plus mesotherapy significantly improved the horizontal neck lines grades on all follow-up visits (P = 0.000). Cases of different baseline grades (2, 2.5, and 3) demonstrated similar outcomes. The GAIS and patients' satisfaction ratings were significantly higher for the HA filling plus mesotherapy treatment group (P = 0.000). Significantly higher pain ratings, higher incidence, and longer recovery of AEs (erythema, edema, and ecchymosis) were noticed in the combined treatment group (P < 0.001). No serious AEs occurred. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with BTX-A, combined treatment with HA compound filling plus mesotherapy significantly improved moderate-to-severe horizontal neck lines and achieved a high level of patient satisfaction.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to document the effects of mesotherapy in working dogs diagnosed with hip osteoarthritis (OA) and related pain. Ten police working dogs with hip OA and related pain were treated with a combination of lidocaine, piroxicam, and thiocolchicoside, injected in multiple intradermal points. Seven treatment sessions were conducted. The Canine Brief Pain Inventory (CBPI) and the Hudson Visual Analogue Scale (HVAS) were used in the assessment of response to treatment compared to evaluation before treatment (T0), after 15 d, 30 d, 60 d, 90 d, 120 d, 150 d, and 180 d after initial treatment. Results were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Significant differences were experienced in CBPI scores comparing moments with T0: at 15 d (P = 0.03 for Pain Interference Score - PIS) and P = 0.02 for Pain Severity Score - PSS), 30 d (P < 0.05 for PIS and P < 0.05 for PSS), 60 d (P = 0.04 for PIS and P = 0.01 for PSS) and 180 d (P = 0.04 for PSS). Individual treatment results were considered successful in 40% of animals at 15 d and 30 d, 66.7% at 60 d, 44% at 90 d, 37.5% at 120 d, and 25% at 150 d. The HVAS scores showed no significant differences. Mesotherapy may be an option for the treatment of canine musculoskeletal-related pain. Further studies are required.

Mésothérapie en plusieurs séances pour la prise en charge de la douleur arthrosique coxofémorale chez 10 chiens de travail : une série de cas. RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Vitamin C/Ascorbic acid inhibits tyrosinase enzyme causing melanin biosynthesis suppression. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of intra-mucosal injection (mesotherapy) with topical gel as non-surgical methods for managing gingival hyperpigmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty healthy non-smokers with mild to severe hyperpigmented gingiva were randomly assigned for Mesotherapy (G1); intra-mucosal injection of ascorbic acid (1/week/3 weeks); or Gel (G2), topical ascorbic acid gel (1/day/3 months). Pigmentation index (DOPI), patient satisfaction, as well as histological analysis for Fontana-Masson-stained specimens were performed at baseline and after 6 months. Comparison between groups and changes by time were analyzed using Mann-Whitney and Friedman's tests, respectively. RESULTS: The median DOPI significantly decreased after 1 month in G1 (P value < 0.001, r = 0.9) compared with non-significant change in G2. No pain experienced during or after treatment in both groups. G1 patients showed significantly higher satisfaction with treatment than G2. Mean area fraction of melanin forming cells was significantly reduced in both groups after 6 months, but the effect size was higher in G1 (r = 0.886) than in G2 (r = 0.797). CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin C mesotherapy showed better and early effect than topical gel, and both techniques were not painful and esthetically satisfying in managing gingival hyperpigmentation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Gingival melanin pigmentation causes esthetic concerns for significant number of patients. Investigating non-surgical depigmentation techniques to decrease postoperative complications and patient discomfort, pain and long healing period associated with surgical methods would be clinically significant.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: Although it appears to be a simple, easy, and financially attractive therapeutic modality, skin rejuvenation mesotherapy is a controversial cosmetic procedure and proof of its efficacy is still lacking. The authors have published a review about this therapeutic modality more than a decade ago. Few clinical studies evaluating its efficacy and safety were available then without any conclusive scientific evidence about its efficacy; nevertheless, mesotherapy has continued to be performed at a relatively high financial cost to patients by many nonmedical and medical professionals for antiaging purposes. The authors have published a review about this therapeutic modality more than a decade ago. The current review is an update aimed at identifying any evidence about the scientific validity and efficacy of this approach that has emerged since then. No clinical valuable new data and new information has been identified. As by American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) policy statement updated and approved in 2019, mesotherapy for skin rejuvenation is currently not Food and Drug Administration approved. Until more conclusive data is available, skin rejuvenation mesotherapy cannot be recommended for routine skin rejuvenation clinical application.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal pain such as low back pain (LBP) are routinely encountered in the ED and contribute to ED overcrowding. The aim of our study was to compare the efficiency of mesotherapy with systemic therapy in pain control in patients with lumbar disk herniation. METHODS: We conducted this prospective parallel randomized controlled trial with the patients admitted to the emergency department with low back pain related to herniated lumbar disk. Mesotherapy was performed to one group, while intravenous dexketoprofen was administered to the control group. Changes in pain intensity at 15th minute, 30th minute, 60th minute and 24th hours after treatment using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), need to use analgesic drug within 24 h after treatment, and adverse effect of the treatment methods were compared between groups. RESULTS: The decreases in pain intensity were statistically significantly higher in mesotherapy group for all time intervals. The need to use analgesics was statistically significantly three fold higher in the systemic therapy group. There was no statistically significant difference in having any adverse effect between study groups during one-week follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: Changes in medical practices, from the systemic administration of NSAIDs to the minimally invasive techniques such as mesotherapy with potent efficacy and minimal side effects, may enhance the ability of EDs to meet the waiting time targets and improve patient's satisfaction.

RESUMEN

Objective: To observe the clinical effect of mesotherapy with nanochip for facial rejuvenation. Methods: 24 volunteers with aging skin were treated with a polycomponent formulation - NCTF® BOOST 135 HA for 5 times (once weekly for 3 times and successively biweekly for 2 times). Photographs were taken by VISIA at baseline, and after 1, 4, 10 weeks, while global scores for photoaging (GSP), improvement scores, volunteers' satisfaction, parameters describing the properties of the skin, and adverse effects were assessed during each follow-up period. Results: Total 20 volunteers completed the treatment. Evaluation of the whole face showed that GSP, skin texture (ophthalmic wrinkles, dermal thickness, and intensity of collagen fibers of skin), and skin brightness (Lab value) significantly improved at 4 weeks compared to baseline, while the difference between 4 and 10 weeks was not statistically significant. No evident improvement was observed in pigmented spots, telangiectasia, skin tightening, trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), and skin hydration. Slight erythema, pain was the most common side effect. Conclusion: Mesotherapy with nanochip can improve skin texture and brightness, but the effect is not permanent. It is recommended that the treatment be used as a complementary method for patients with facial rejuvenation needs.

RESUMEN

Intradermal therapy, known as mesotherapy, is a technique used to inject a drug into the surface layer of the skin. In particular, it involves the use of a short needle to deposit the drug in the dermis. The intradermal microdeposit modulates the drug's kinetics, slowing absorption and prolonging the local mechanism of action. It is successfully applied in the treatment of some forms of localized pain syndromes and other local clinical conditions. It could be suggested when a systemic drug-sparing effect is useful, when other therapies have failed (or cannot be used), and when it can synergize with other pharmacological or nonpharmacological therapies. Despite the lack of randomized clinical trials in some fields of application, a general consensus is also reached in nonpharmacological mechanism of action, the technique execution modalities, the scientific rationale to apply it in some indications, and the usefulness of the informed consent. The Italian Mesotherapy Society proposes this position paper to apply intradermal therapy based on scientific evidence and no longer on personal bias.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Acute musculoskeletal injuries are one of the most common painful presentation when admission to the emergency department. The aim of the study is to compare the tenoxicam mesotherapy with intravenous dexketoprofen in pain control in patients with acute musculoskeletal injury. METHODS: This parallel randomized controlled trial was conducted with the patients admitted to the emergency department with musculoskeletal injury. Intravenous dexketoprofen was administered to the control group, and mesotherapy treatment was performed to the other group. Differences between 10th, 30th, 60th and 120th minutes VAS scores and on the admission VAS score, clinically meaningful change in pain intensity, and adverse effect of the procedures were compared among groups. THE RESULTS: The differences in VAS scores and the presence of clinically meaningful change in pain intensity were statistically significantly higher in mesotherapy group than the systemic therapy group in all time periods. During one-week follow-up period, there was no reported adverse effect neither in mesotherapy group nor in the systemic therapy group. CONCLUSIONS: The mesotherapy treatment may be superior than the systemic therapy for pain relief in musculoskeletal injury in short term follow-up in emergency department settings.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Cryolipolysis is a fairly popular procedure performed in North America, Europe, and many other countries. Although it is considered a rather safe procedure, there are underreported side effects such as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH), contour irregularities, skin and soft tissue atrophy, and asymmetries. Our knowledge regarding the prevalence and treatment of such complications is limited. OBJECTIVES: We hereby report a case series of 5 patients treated for various complications of cryolipolysis, including PAH, that persisted for more than 12 months after their last treatment. METHODS: Five patients with various complications of cryolipolysis (4 patients with PAH and 1 with atrophy and indentations) presented in our private office between 2015 and 2018. Three of the 4 patients with PAH were treated at other facilities with ultrasonic liposuction, laser lipolysis, and radiofrequency skin tightening devices respectively. The fourth patient developed PAH after liposuction at another facility. The fifth patient developed several areas of indentations and atrophy and received mesotherapy and lymphatic massages at another facility. All 5 patients were subsequently treated in our office by means of a customized approach specific to their underlying complications. RESULTS: Near-normal results were achieved in all 5 patients. None of our patients showed any recurrences of their initial complication for which they were treated. All 5 patients were extremely satisfied with their results. CONCLUSIONS: Cryolipolysis, just like any other form of lipolysis, has certain specific adverse effects associated with it, including but not limited to PAH. Complications of cryolipolysis must be individually recognized and treated accordingly.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Noninvasive fat reduction appears effective, but there are various methods for quantifying changes. The objective of this review is to assess comparative utility measures of subcutaneous fat. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Articles describing noninvasive fat reduction were searched using MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and Scopus electronic databases on two dates (January 28, 2014 and February 16, 2016). Titles of studies and abstracts were screened for eligibility. Manual review was performed by two investigators to detect those that: (1) included original data; (2) were randomized controlled trials, or prospective or retrospective cohort studies; (3) quantified fat outcomes; and (4) enrolled at least 10 subjects. RESULTS: Of 1,057 retrieved articles, 36 met criteria. Most reported four or more measurement techniques. Circumference measurements were most commonly cited. Other objective techniques, like caliper thickness, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and three-dimensional (3D) photography, were also used. Common subjective methods were evaluation of standardized photographs by blinded raters and patient satisfaction surveys. CONCLUSIONS: For quantifying noninvasive fat reduction, all available methods had significant limitations: photographic comparisons were subjective; circumference or caliper measurements were confounded; ultrasound was operator dependent; MRI was expensive; computed models and simulations were in early development. As new technologies are developed, the need for reliable, accurate and practical measures of subcutaneous fat will increase. Lasers Surg. Med. 50:96-110, 2018. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
