Introducción. Blastocystis sp es un protozoo parásito que se encuentra en el tracto intestinal del hombre y algunos animales, se estima que infecta a más de 1.000 millones de personas en el mundo. El presente trabajo tuvo como Objetivo determinar los genotipos de Blastocystis sp asociados a diferentes fuentes de transmisión en zona rural del departamento del Quindío. Materiales y Métodos. Se obtuvieron 42 muestras coprológicas de niños entre 0 y 14 años, 17 de heces de animales, 17 de alimentos, 28 de superficies inertes ,15 de suelo, 18 de agua de red domiciliaria y 3 de fuente hídrica. Se realizó extracción de ADN y amplificación por PCR para Blastocystis sp usando como blanco el gen SSADNr. Las secuencias fueron alineadas con ClustalW y se realizaron árboles filogenéticos el programa (MEGA11). Resultados. De las 140 muestras recolectadas entre coprológicos de población infantil y matrices ambientales, se encontró una prevalencia de Blastocystis sp del 23,5 % en alimentos, 22,2% en red domiciliaria y del 4,75 % en la población infantil, no hubo evidencia estadística que implicara una asociación entre la presencia de este protozoo y las variables sociodemográficas. Se encontró el subtipo 2 asociado a población infantil y el subtipo 3 asociado a matrices ambientales (agua y alimentos) y población infantil. Conclusiones: Se reporta la presencia de Blastocystis sp en tomate y zanahoria, en la red domiciliaria y población infantil en una zona rural del departamento del Quindío donde los subtipos asociados fueron el subtipo 2 y 3.


Introduction. Blastocystis sp is a parasitic protozoan found in the intestinal tract of man and some animals, and it is estimated that it infects more than 1,000 million people in the world. In the national parasitism survey, it was reported with a prevalence of 52% in the northern Andean region. The aim of this study was to determine the genotypes of Blastocystis sp associated with different sources of transmission in rural areas of the department of Quindío. Materials and Methods. Forty-two coprological samples were obtained from children between 0 and 14 years of age, 17 from animal feces, 17 from food, 28 from inert surfaces, 15 from soil, 18 from household water and 3 from water sources. DNA extraction and PCR amplification were performed for Blastocystis sp using the SSADNr gene as target. The sequences were aligned with ClustalW and phylogenetic trees were performed with the program (MEGA11). Results. Of the 140 samples collected between coprological samples of children and environmental matrices, we found a prevalence of Blastocystis sp of 23.5% in food, 22.2% in the home network and 4.75% in the child population, there was no statistical evidence implying an association between the presence of this protozoan and sociodemographic variables. Subtype 2 was found associated with infant population and subtype 3 associated with environmental matrices (water and food) and infant population. Conclusions: We report the presence of Blastocystis sp in tomato and carrot, in the home network and infant population in a rural area of the department of Quindío where the associated subtypes were subtype 2 and 3.

Las enteroparasitosis son un problema de salud pública a nivel global con mayor impacto en los países subdesarrollados asociadas a condiciones de vida inadecuadas. La población infantil es más suceptible para desarrollar sintomatología provocando cuadros disentéricos, vomitos, síndrome de mal absorción, lo que influye en deficiencia de nutrientes y vitaminas, como consecuencia retraso en el crecimiento, malnutrición, trastornos del desarrollo físico y cognitivo. Se realizó una investigación epidemiológica, de corte transversal para estimar la prevalencia de parásitos instestinales y las diferencias en relación a las medidas antropométricas, en 283 escolares de la Capital de la provincia de Manabí. Las variables peso, talla parada, circunferencia de brazo izquierdo, pliegues de tríceps y subescapular, índice de masa corporal, área magra y área grasa fueron seleccionadas para establecer la relación. El coproparasitológico se realizó con el método directo (solución salina 0,9% y Lugol) y Kato Katz. Los resultados mostraron 62,54% de prevalencia, sin distingo de sexo, ni edad. Blastocytis spp., la especie más frecuente, confirmándose el comportamiento epidemiológico a nivel mundial a expensa de los protozoarios, con presencia de especies comensales (E. nana) relacionada con el fecalismo. A pesar de la alta prevalencia, no se observó diferencia significativa entre variables antropométricas analizadas en los escolares parasitados y no parasitados. Se infiere que es debido al tipo de especies y la intensidad de la infestación. Se recomienda realizar campañas de educación sanitaria y promover hábitos de higiene, así como dirigir investigaciones para determinar el papel epidemiológico del agua de consumo y las enteroparasitosis(AU)


Enteroparasitosis is a global public health problem with the greatest impact in underdeveloped countries associated with inadequate living conditions. The child population is more susceptible to developing symptoms causing dysentery, vomiting, malabsorption syndrome, which influences nutrient and vitamin deficiency, resulting in growth retardation, malnutrition, physical and cognitive development disorders. A cross-sectional epidemiological investigation was carried out to estimate the prevalence of intestinal parasites and the differences in relation to anthropometric measurements, in 283 schoolchildren from the capital of the province of Manabí. The variables weight, standing height, left arm circumference, triceps and subscapular folds, body mass index, lean area, and fat area were selected to establish the relationship. Coproparasitology was performed with the direct method (saline solution 0.9% and Lugol) and Kato Katz. The results showed 62.54% prevalence, regardless of sex or age. Blastocytis spp., the most frequent species, confirming the epidemiological behavior worldwide at the expense of protozoa, with the presence of commensal species (E. nana) related to fecalism. Despite the high prevalence, no significant difference was observed between the anthropometric variables analyzed in parasitized and non-parasitized schoolchildren. It is inferred that it is due to the type of species and the intensity of the infestation. It is recommended to carry out health education campaigns and promote hygiene habits, as well as to conduct research to determine the epidemiological role of drinking water and enteroparasitosis(AU)

Diversos factores de riesgos pueden condicionar las prevalencias de parasitosis intestinales en niños. Como objetivo se propuso determinar los factores de riesgo y parasitosis intestinal en niños menores de 10 años de la Olla Común ubicada en Villa Mara del Triunfo-Perú durate el año 2022. La investigación fue descriptiva-experimental y correlativa con una muestra de 160 niños <10 años de ambos sexos. Como instrumento de recolección se aplicó un cuestionario con preguntas dicotómicas para conocer las prácticas de higiene de los niños y se efectuó la recolección y procesamiento de muestras con técnicas de Solución Salina S.S.F al 85%, Lugol, Método de Kato y Método de concentración-Flotación de Faust. Para analizar los datos se utilizó Microsoft Excel y el software SPSS, estadística descriptica y hallar tablas de frecuencias y porcentajes y Prueba de correlación entre los elementos de riesgo y la frecuencia de signos de los parásitos. Como resultado, el cálculo estadístico con el método de Spearman mostró una concordancia positiva con el coeficiente de correlación 0,725 y con un valor de 0,001<0,05; donde los niveles de factores de riesgo en los infantes mostraron que el 31,3% se encontraban en riesgo bajo con un nivel bajo de síntomas y sin evidencia de parásitos intestinales, el 18,8% en riesgo medio y el 12,5% en riesgo alto y un nivel alto de síntomas y parasitosis intestinal confirmado; la mayoría de los niños se encuentran en un entorno de bajo riesgo. Se hace necesario e indispensable continuar con invesigaciones en zonas adyacentes(AU)


Various risk factors can condition the prevalence of intestinal parasitosis in children. The objective was to determine the risk factors and intestinal parasitosis in children under 10 years of age from the Common Pot located in Villa Mara del Triunfo-Peru during the year 2022. The research was descriptive-experimental and correlative with a sample of 160 children <10 years of both sexes. As a collection instrument, a questionnaire with dichotomous questions was applied to know the hygiene practices of the children and the collection and processing of samples was carried out with techniques of Saline Solution S.S.F at 85%, Lugol's, Kato's Method and Concentration-Flotation Method. of Faust. To analyze the data, Microsoft Excel and the SPSS software were used, descriptive statistics and finding tables of frequencies and percentages and a correlation test between the risk elements and the frequency of signs of the parasites. As a result, the statistical calculation with the Spearman method showed a positive agreement with the correlation coefficient 0.725 and with a p value of 0.001<0.05; where the levels of risk factors in infants showed that 31.3% were at low risk with a low level of symptoms and no evidence of intestinal parasites, 18.8% at medium risk and 12.5% at high risk and a high level of symptoms and confirmed intestinal parasitism; most children are in a low-risk environment. It is necessary and essential to continue with investigations in adjacent areas(AU)

Resumen Blastocystis spp. es un parásito muy frecuente en materia fecal humana, pero la naturaleza polimórfica y el número de Blastocystis en la muestra pueden complicar su detección por microscopía. El objetivo del trabajo fue describir la dinámica de los morfotipos de Blastocystis a corto plazo en un medio de cultivo simple y determinar su aplicabilidad para utilizarlo como complemento del análisis coproparasitológico y para estudios morfológicos, bioquímicos y moleculares del parásito. Se sembraron 10 muestras de materia fecal con Blastocystis en un medio Pavlova adaptado, se examinaron diariamente por examen microscópico durante 6 días y se registraron las formas y el recuento. El desarrollo fue regular y abundante y las formas fueron de tamaños variables y claramente identificables. El cultivo ensayado puede ser útil para la detección de Blastocystis cuando existan dudas diagnósticas por microscopía, para estudios de sensibilidad y especificidad diagnóstica o cuando se requiera aumentar la carga para realizar otros estudios.


Abstract Blastocystis spp. is a very frequent parasite in human fecal matter, but the polymorphic nature and the number of Blastocystis in a sample can complicate its detection by microscopy. The objective of the present work was to describe the dynamics of Blastocystis morphotypes in the short term in a simple culture medium and to determine its applicability to use it as a complement to coproparasitological analysis and for morphological, biochemical and molecular studies of the parasite. Ten stool samples with Blastocystis were cultured in an adapted Pavlova medium and examined during 6 days by microscopy to record the forms and the count. The development was regular and abundant and the shapes were of variable sizes and clearly identifiable. The tested culture could be used for the detection of Blastocystis when microscopic diagnosis is dubious, for studies of diagnostic sensitivity and specificity or when it is necessary to increase the load to perform other studies.


Resumo Blastocystis spp. é um parasita muito frequente nas fezes humanas, mas a natureza polimórfica e o número de Blastocystis na amostra podem complicar a sua detecção através do microscópio. O objetivo do trabalho foi descrever a dinâmica dos morfotipos de Blastocystis no curto prazo em um meio de cultura simples e determinar sua aplicabilidade para ser utilizado como complemento da análise coproparasitológica e para estudos morfológicos, bioquímicos e moleculares do parasita. Foram semeadas dez amostras de fezes com Blastocystis em um meio Pavlova adaptado e examinadas diariamente através de exame microscópico durante 6 dias, registrando as formas e fazendo recontagem. O desenvolvimento foi regular e abundante e as formas foram de tamanhos variáveis e claramente identificáveis. A cultura testada pode ser útil para a detecção de Blastocystis quando houver dúvidas diagnósticas por microscopia; para estudos de sensibilidade e especificidade diagnóstica ou quando for necessário aumentar a carga para a realização de outros estudos.

Background: The intrinsic sensitivity limitations of basic parasitological methods, along with the particular biological characteristics of parasites, make these methods ineffective to differentiate morphologically indistinguishable species. Molecular detection and characterization techniques could be used to overcome these problems. The purpose of this work was to standardize molecular polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques, described in the literature, for the detection and molecular characterization of intestinal protozoa and other pathogens in humans. Methods: DNA was extracted from human or animal feces, previously washed or cultured in Boeck Drbohlav's Modified Medium. DNA extraction was performed with Machery-Nagel extraction kits. The standardization of the PCR, nested-PCR or RFLP techniques was carried out according to the literature. For each molecular technique performed, the sensitivity of the test was determined based on the minimun quantity required of DNA (sensitivity A) and the minimum quantity of life forms that the test detected (sensitivity B). Results: Sensitivity A was 10 fg for G. duodenalis, 12.5 pg for Entamoeba histolytica or Entamoeba dispar, 50 fg for Cryptosporidium spp., 225 pg for Cyclospora spp. and 800 fg or 8 fg for Blastocystis spp. after performing a 1780 bp PCR or 310 bp nested PCR, respectively. The sensitivity B was 100 cysts for G. duodenalis, 500 cysts for E. histolytica or E. dispar, 1000 oocysts for Cyclospora spp. and 3600 or four vegetatives forms for PCR or nested PCR of Blastocystis spp., respectively. Conclusions: The molecular detection of protozoa and chromist was achieved and the molecular characterization allowed the genotyping of some of the parasites such as Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium spp., and Blastocystis spp. This study summarizes the molecular techniques for epidemiological studies in humans and animals, and helps in the investigation of their transmission sources in countries where intestinal parasites are a public health problem.(AU)

Blastocystis es un stramenopile o cromista, pleomórfico no móvil. Se han identificado diecinue-ve subtipos de este organismo (ST1-ST19). Tiene una presencia a nivel mundial. Este microor-ganismo tiene un metabolismo intermediario anaeróbico. Un aspecto interesante de la bioquími-ca de este stramenopile está dado por la presencia de organelas similares a mitocondrias con un conjunto de rutas: cadena de fosforilación oxidativa incompleta, ciclo de Krebs parcial, metabo-lismo de ácidos grasos (anabolismo y catabolismo), metabolismo de aminoácidos y ensamblaje de proteínas con centros hierro/azufre. El tratamiento se ha basado tradicionalmente en metroni-dazol y otros imidazoles. Sin embargo, hay un número creciente de cepas resistentes a esos medicamentos. La reciente obtención del genoma nuclear y los estudios bioquímicos, proteómi-cos, metabolómicos, interactómicos permitirán el desarrollo racional de nuevos fármacos curati-vos. El objetivo de esta revisión es describir el metabolismo de Blastocystis spp


Blastocystis is a stramenopile or chromist, nonmobile pleomorphic. Nineteen subtypes of this organism (ST1-ST19) have been identified worldwide. This microorganism has an intermediate anaerobic metabolism. An interesting aspect of the biochemistry of this stramenopile is given by the presence of mitochondrial-like organelles with a set of pathways: incomplete oxidative phos-phorylation chain, partial Krebs cycle, fatty acid metabolism (anabolism and catabolism), amino acid metabolism and protein assembly with iron / sulfur centers. Treatment has traditionally been based on metronidazole and other imidazoles. However, there are a growing number of strains resistant to these drugs. The recent obtaining of the nuclear genome and the biochemical, proteomic, metabolomic and interactomic studies will allow the rational development of new curative drugs. The objective of this review is to describe the metabolism of Blastocystis spp.

Resumen Blastocystis es el parásito unicelular del intestino del hombre y de otros animales más prevalente en seres humanos. Presenta gran variedad genética con múltiples subtipos (ST). Aunque se ha asociado a desórdenes intestinales y extraintestinales, su patogenicidad es discutida. Se analizaron 461 muestras de materia fecal de pacientes sintomáticos (n=380) y asintomáticos (n=81) de hospitales de Bahía Blanca, Argentina; se solicitó consentimiento informado y se completó una ficha epidemiológica. Se realizaron análisis coproparasitológicos, morfometría, recuento y tipificación de Blastocystis ST3 por PCR. La población fue: 57,3% de sexo femenino y 42,7% masculino. La prevalencia de Blastocystis fue de 31% y de Blastocystis ST3 62%. Se hallaron formas vacuolares, granulares y quísticas; las vacuolares fueron las más frecuentes. En el 64,8% de las muestras los Blastocystis fueron pequeños y escasos. El 88,4% de los pacientes sintomáticos presentó trastornos gastrointestinales, el 4% urticaria y el 7,6% fiebre, anemia y bajo peso. El 66,7% de los pacientes con urticaria presentó Blastocystis. La presencia de síntomas se asoció significativamente con Blastocystis (p<0,002). No se hallaron asociaciones estadísticas entre Blastocystis, la edad, el sexo, la disponibilidad de agua potable, de cloacas y el contacto con animales. Dentro de los síntomas sólo se encontró asociación estadística de Blastocystis con urticaria (p<0,007). No hubo asociación entre Blastocystis ST3 y sintomatología. Los resultados destacan la alta prevalencia de Blastocystis y de Blastocystis ST3, la necesidad de hacer un coproparasitológico minucioso, su asociación estadística con urticaria y la importancia de no ignorarlo en el proceso salud-enfermedad.


Abstract Blastocystis is the unicellular parasite of the intestine of man and other animals,most prevalent in humans. It has a great genetic variety with multiple subtypes (ST). Although it has been associated with intestinal and extraintestinal disorders, its pathogenicity remains unclear. Four hundred and sixty one stool samples from symptomatic (n=380) and asymptomatic(n=81) patients from hospitals in Bahía Blanca, Argentina were analysed; informed consent was requested and an epidemiological file was completed. Coproparasitological analysis, morphometry, counting and typing of Blastocystis ST3 were performed by PCR. The population was: 57.3% female and 42.7% male.The prevalence of Blastocystis was 31.0% and that of Blastocystis ST3 62%. Vacuolar, granular and cystic forms were found, with vacuolar forms being the most frequent. Blastocystis were small and scarce in 64.8% of the samples. Most of the symptomatic patients (88.4%) presented gastrointestinal disorders, urticaria 4% and fever, anemia and low weight 7.6%; 66.7% of the urticaria patients presented Blastocystis. The presence of symptoms was significantly associated with Blastocystis (p<0.002). No statistical associations were found between Blastocystis, age, sex, availability of drinking water, sewage, and contact with animals. Within the symptoms, only statistical association of Blastocystis with urticaria was found (p<0.007). There was no association between Blastocystis ST3 and symptomatology. The results highlight the high prevalenceof Blastocystis and Blastocystis ST3, the need for a thorough coproparasitology, their statistical association with urticaria and the importance of not ignoring it in the health-disease process.

Embora tenha sido associada a distúrbios intestinais e extraintestinais, sua patogenicidade é debatida. Foram analisadas 461 amostras de fezes de pacientes sintomáticos (n=380) e assintomáticos (n= 81) de hospitais de Bahía Blanca, Argentina; foi solicitado consentimento informado e preenchida uma ficha epidemiológica. Foram realizadas análises coproparasitológicas, morfometria, contagem e tipificação de Blastocystis ST3 por PCR. A população era: 57,3% sexo feminino e 42,7% masculino. A prevalência de Blastocystis foi de 31,0% e de Blastocystis ST3 62%. Foram encontradas formas vacuolares, granulares e císticas, sendo as vacuolares as mais frequentes. Em 64,8% das amostras, os Blastocystis foram pequenos e escassos; 88,4% dos pacientes sintomáticos apresentaram distúrbios gastrointestinais, 4% urticária e 7,6% febre, anemia e baixo peso; 66,7% dos pacientes com urticária apresentaram Blastocystis. A presença de sintomas foi associada significativamente com Blastocystis (p˂0,002). Não foram encontradas associações estatísticas entre Blastocystis, a idade, sexo, a disponibilidade de água potável, de esgoto e o contato com animais. Dentro dos sintomas, só foi encontrada associação estatística de Blastocystis com urticária (p˂0,007). Não houve associação entre Blastocystis ST3 e sintomatologia. Os resultados destacam a alta prevalência de Blastocystis e Blastocystis ST3, a necessidade de fazer um coproparasitologico minucioso, sua associação estatística com urticária e a importância de não ignorá-lo no processo saúde-doença.

Abstract INTRODUCTION Blastocystis is an intestinal protozoan that may play a role in the pathogenicity of humans. This study aimed to (i) genetically characterize Blastocystis isolates obtained from human fecal samples and the water supply of the city of Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and (ii) to verify the phylogenetic relationship between these isolates. METHODS Blastocystis species present in 26 fecal samples obtained from humans and animals from Uberaba were genetically characterized by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and polymerase chain reaction-sequence-tagged sites. All amplicons were partially sequenced and/or defined according to the GenBank classification. RESULTS Polymerase chain reaction amplicons were generated from 21 human isolates and 18 water samples. The subtypes defined were ST1 (53.3%), ST3 (40.0%), and ST2 (6.7%) for human isolates; ST10 (100%) for bovine isolates; and ST5 (50.0%), ST1 (25%), and ST3 (25%) for pigs. Sequencing of polymerase chain reaction products showed a 98%-99% identity for the Blastocystis sequences deposited in GenBank, except for sequences from water samples that showed the identity of algae sequences. Phylogenetic analysis of Blastocystis sequences showed two distinct groups, one of which was principally formed by ST1, ST5, and ST10, and the other by isolates characterized as ST3 and ST7. Both clades showed human and animal sequences, reinforcing the notion that Blastocystis subtypes are not host-specific. CONCLUSIONS The data showed that Blastocystis subtypes circulating in Uberaba are ST1-ST3, ST5, and ST10, present in both humans and animals, demonstrating that the Blastocystis subtypes are not host-specific; that is, zoonotic transmission is possible.

The present study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of Blastocystis sp. in Brazilian studies over a period of years (2000-2020), as well as point out relevant aspects of this enigmatic organism. We performed a literature search using six sources of international databases. The data were divided into diagnostic by parasitological and molecular techniques, and relevant aspects. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 52 studies were included in the final analysis. The occurrence of Blastocystis sp. in Brazil ranged from 0.5% to 86.6%, as determined using parasitological techniques. The highest occurrence was in the North (27.3%) and the lowest, in the Midwest region (13.4%). In Brazil, most studies have employed molecular techniques and are concentrated in the Southeast region. The Blastocystis sp. subtype ST3 had the highest average positivity, followed by ST1 and ST2. These findings represent a panorama that reflects the reality of Brazil; thus, we believe that the effectiveness of parasitological diagnosis should be considered with regard to making an appropriate choice of technique for detecting Blastocystis sp. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of further studies in the context of molecular epidemiology with regard to this genus. Blastocystis sp. is not well understood yet, and very little information regarding this genus is available; hence, further research regarding this genus is urgently needed.

Introduction: The decreasing prevalence of parasitosis from north to south in Argentina has led the scientific community to focus the epidemiological studies on the most vulnerable areas and, consequently, neglect the populations of Patagonia (South Argentina). The objectives of the present study were (i) to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in children and youth of Puerto Madryn (Chubut province, Patagonia), and (ii) to evaluate the parasitic infections found concerning socio-environmental factors and hygiene practices of the population. Materials and methods: Serial stool samples were processed using modified Ritchie and FLOTAC dual pellet techniques, and samples of anal swabs were examined by sedimentation. Socio-environmental variables and hygiene practices of the participants were surveyed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Results: Of all examined participants, 39.1% (68/174) were parasitized. A total of 6 parasite species were found and the most prevalent were Blastocystis sp (19.0%), Enterobius vermicularis (17.8%), and Giardia lamblia (6.3%). The risk of parasitosis and infection for Blastocystis sp was greater in participants who lived in houses without piped water (OR = 2.9 and OR = 3.2, respectively). The risk of infection for G. lamblia was positively associated with the lack of public waste collection service (OR = 5.6). Infection for E. vermicularis was higher in participants whose parents had a basic level of education (OR = 5.0). Conclusion: The parasitic infections observed reflect the environmental conditions of Patagonia and the need to focus studies on populations from peripheral areas to urban centers that are exposed to greater socio-economic vulnerability.


Introducción: La prevalencia de parasitosis decreciente de norte a sur en la Argentina, ha llevado a la comunidad científica a enfocar sus estudios epidemiológicos hacia las zonas más vulnerables y desatender a las poblaciones de la Patagonia (sur de Argentina). Los objetivos del presente estudio fueron: determinar la prevalencia de parásitos intestinales en niños y jóvenes de Puerto Madryn (Chubut, Patagonia), y evaluar las infecciones parasitarias en relación con los factores socioambientales y las prácticas de higiene de la población. Materiales y métodos: Se procesaron muestras seriadas de materia fecal mediante las técnicas Ritchie modificada y FLOTAC dual pellet, y muestras de escobillado anal por sedimentación. Se relevaron las variables socioambientales y las prácticas de higiene de los participantes mediante cuestionarios semiestructurados. Resultados: El 39.1% (68/174) de la población analizada estuvo parasitado. Se halló un total de 6 especies parásitas, las más prevalentes de las cuales fueron Blastocystis sp (19.0%), Enterobius vermicularis (17.8%) y Giardia lamblia (6.3%). El riesgo de parasitosis y de infección por Blastocystis sp fue mayor en los participantes que no poseían agua de red (odds ratio [OR] = 2.9 y OR = 3.2, respectivamente). La infección por G. lamblia se asoció de manera positiva con la falta de recolección pública de residuos (OR = 5.6). La infección por E. vermicularis fue superior en los participantes con padres que tenían un nivel de estudios primario (OR = 5.0). Conclusión: Las infecciones parasitarias observadas reflejan las condiciones ambientales de la Patagonia y la necesidad de orientar los estudios a poblaciones periféricas de los centros urbanos, las cuales están expuestas a mayor vulnerabilidad socioeconómica

Introducción. La contaminación enteroparasitaria en autobuses por parte de usuarios infectados con malas conductas sanitarias potencia el riesgo de infección del resto de los pasajeros con el subsecuente peligro del desarrollo de patologías gastrointestinales. Por esto se evaluó la frecuencia de contaminación de autobuses con el fin de aportar datos que son desconocidos en Venezuela e inexistentes en Latinoamérica. Metodología. El trabajo fue descriptivo, transversal, con muestra no probabilística y accidental, donde la obtención de la muestra consistió en frotar el pasamanos de cada autobús (100 vehículos examinados) tres veces con un hisopo impregnado en solución salina isotónica 0.85%, resuspendiendolo en un tubo de ensayo con 10 ml de solución salina. La muestra se centrifugó a 3000 rpm por diez minutos para luego observar el sedimento al microscopio. Resultados. El 16% de las muestras presentaron contaminación, encontrándose solo dos especies de enteroparásitos, Blastocystis spp. (14% del total de muestras examinadas) y Endolimax nana (5%). Discusión. La abundancia del potencial patógeno Blastocystis sp., se relaciona con lo descrito en exámenes de heces de habitantes de Barquisimeto y del estado Lara, demostrando que los usuarios enfermos con malas conductas higiénicas convierten a los autobuses en un foco de infección que debe ser controlado. Conclusión. La falta de aseo constante en unidades de transporte público y la ausencia de conciencia sanitaria de algunos pasajeros infectados facilitan la transmisión de enteroparásitos endémicos potencialmente productores de enfermedades gastrointestinales. Introduction. Enteroparasite contamination by infected users with poor sanitary habits in buses increases other passengers' risk of infection, with the subsequent danger of developing gastrointestinal pathologies. For this reason, bus contamination frequency was evaluated in order to provide data that is unknown in Venezuela and non-existent in Latin America. Methodology. The work was descriptive and cross-sectional, with non-probability and accidental sampling. The sample was obtained by rubbing each bus' handrail (100 examined vehicles) three times with a swab permeated with a 0.85% isotonic saline solution, resuspending it in a test tube with 10 ml of saline solution. The sample was centrifuged at 3,000 rpm for ten minutes to then observe the sediment under a microscope. Results. Sixteen percent of samples were contaminated, observing only two species of enteroparasites, Blastocystis sp. (14% of total examined samples) and Endolimax nana (5%). Discussion. The abundance of the potential pathogen, Blastocystis sp. is related to what has been described in feces exams on the inhabitants of Barquisimeto and the state of Lara, demonstrating that sick users with poor hygiene habits make buses a point of infection that must be controlled. Conclusion. The lack of constant cleaning in public transportation units and the absence of some infected passengers' sanitary awareness facilitates transmitting endemic enteroparasites that could potentially produce gastrointestinal diseases. A contaminação enteroparasitária em ônibus por usuários infectados com comportamentos sanitários inadequados aumenta o risco de infecção do resto dos passageiros com o consequente perigo de desenvolvimento de patologias gastrointestinais. Por isso, avaliou-se a frequência de contaminação de ônibus, a fim de fornecer dados até agora desconhecidos na Venezuela e inexistentes na América Latina. Metodologia. O trabalho foi descritivo, transversal, com amostra não-probabilística e acidental, em que a obtenção da amostra consistiu em esfregar o corrimão de cada ônibus (100 veículos examinados) três vezes com um cotonete impregnado em solução salina isotônica 0.85%, ressuspendendo-o em um tubo de ensaio com 10 ml de solução salina. A amostra foi centrifugada a 3,000 rpm por dez minutos para posteriormente observar o sedimento ao microscópio. Resultados. 16% das amostras apresentaram contaminação, sendo encontradas apenas duas espécies de enteroparasitas, Blastocystis sp. (14% do total das amostras examinadas) e Endolimax nana (5%). Discussão. A abundância do potencial patógeno Blastocystis sp., está relacionada ao que foi descrito em exames de fezes de moradores dos estados de Barquisimeto e Lara, mostrando que usuários doentes e com comportamentos sanitários inadequados fazem do ônibus um foco de infecção que deve ser controlado. Conclusão. A falta de limpeza constante nas unidades de transporte público e a falta de conscientização sobre a saúde de alguns passageiros infectados facilitam a transmissão de enteroparasitos endêmicos potencialmente produtoras de doenças gastrointestinais. Resumen Introducción. La falta de estudios en intercomunicadores como medios de propagación de enteroparásitos en Venezuela, motivó el presente estudio. Metodología. Se frotó el intercomunicador tres veces con un hisopo impregnado con solución salina 0,85% (SSI), resuspendiéndolo en un tubo con 10 ml de SSI, el cual se centrifugó a 3000 rpm por 10 minutos para luego observar el sedimente al microscopio. Resultados. El 65% de las muestras estuvieron contaminadas, encontrando 10 taxones de enteroparásitos, a saber: Blastocystis sp (49% del total de muestras examinadas), Endolimax nana (36%), lodamoeba butschlii (8%), Giardia lamblia (7%), Entamoeba coli (4%), Chilomastix mesnili (2%), Entamoeba hartmanni (2%), Trichuris trichiura (2%), Hymenolepis nana (2%) y Taenia sp (1%). Discusión. La diversidad de parásitos encontrados y su abundancia, se corresponden con lo reportado en poblaciones de la misma zona. Conclusión. La falta de higiene en la mayoría de los intercomunicadores facilitan el potencial de estos para transmitir los parásitos endémicos del estado Lara.


Abstract Introduction. The lack of studies in intercoms as means of propagation of enteroparasites in Venezuela, motivated the present study. Methodology. Discussion. The diversity of parasites found and their abundance correspond to that reported in populations of the same area. Conclusion. The lack of hygiene of most of the intercoms facilitates the potential of these to transmit the endemic parasites of the Lara State.

RESUMEN Las enteroparasitosis constituyen un importante problema de salud pública a nivel global, afectando principalmente a la población infantil de los países tropicales. Nuestro objetivo fue determinar la prevalencia de parásitos intestinales en niños de 2 a 5 años en 17 hogares comunitarios del Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar (ICBF) en la Zona Industrial y Bahía de Cartagena de Indias. Para ello, se realizó un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal; se analizaron muestras mediante coprología de 207 niños de ambos sexos. No hubo diferencias significativas asociadas al sexo y edad (p>0,05). La frecuencia de enteroparasitos en la población infantil de 2 a 5 años fue de un 70,5%, donde el 59,5%, presentó una sola especie de parásito, el 34,2% dos y 6,1% tres y cuatro especies. Los principales protistas (86,3%) encontrados fueron Blastocystis hominis (60,2%) y Giardia lamblia (24,6%). En el grupo de Helmintos (13,7%) se destacaron Ascaris lumbricoides (9,6%) e Hymenolepis nana (6,2%). Las enteroparasitosis continúan como un importante problema de salud pública en condiciones del trópico Colombiano, especialmente en población infantil de zonas vulnerables de Cartagena - Colombia. Evidenciando la necesidad de revisar las políticas dirigidas a reducir la frecuencia del parasitismo intestinal.


ABSTRACT Intestinal parasites constitute an important public health problem at a global level, mainly affecting the pediatric population of tropical countries. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in children 2 to 5 years of age in 17 community homes of the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF) in the Industrial Zone and Cartagena de Indias Bay, Colombia. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among 207 children of both sexes. Samples were analyzed by coprology. There were no significant differences associated with sex and age (p>0.05). The frequency of enteroparasites in children aged 2 to 5 was 70.5 %, where 59.5% presented a single species of parasite, 34.2% two and 6.1% three and four species. The main protists (86.3%) found were Blastocystis hominis (60.2%) and Giardia lamblia (24.6%). In the group of Helminths (13.7%), Ascaris lumbricoides (9.6%) and Hymenolepis nana (6.2%) were observed. Intestinal parasites continue to be an important public health problem in the Colombian tropics, especially among children in vulnerable areas of Cartagena, Colombia. There is a need to review policies aimed at reducing the frequency of intestinal parasitism.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Currently, there are few studies regarding Blastocystis epidemiology. This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of Blastocystis in animals in Uberaba, Brazil. METHODS: Fecal samples were examined by parasitological methods and screened for Blastocystis by polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Blastocystis spp. were observed in pigs, sheep, cattle, and dogs. Blastocystis polymerase chain reaction was positive in 14/22 samples positive by parasitological methods. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of Blastocystis in animals is high, with a predominance of subtype 1 in the region. This is the first study conducted in Brazil showing the genetic profile of Blastocystis isolated from animals.

Enteroparasitosis presents high prevalence in developing countries, and is frequent among children, and those with disabilities present even higher susceptibility. The present study evaluated 156 children with neurological disorders to whose parents or guardians an epidemiological questionnaire was applied with a view to identifying risk factors. Stool samples were processed using Ritchie modified by Young, Faust et al., Lutz and Baermann-Moraes techniques. Thirteen samples (8.3%) were positive, being Blastocystis sp. the most frequent parasite (46.2%). Higher positivity was observed for protozoa, especially non-pathogenic. A statistically significant association was only found between the educational level of the mother and positivity for enteroparasites. Among positive children, the habit of placing their hands and objects in their mouths and the consumption of raw vegetables was more frequent. The results show the existence of care and sanitation minimizing the acquisition of intestinal parasite diseases. It is important to alert parents and caregivers about personal hygiene, water and food quality, as well as the environment, considering that transmission of these parasites occurs via the fecal-oral route, in association with multiple factors.

Blastocystis spp. es el protista intracelular que se detecta con mayor frecuencia en muestras de materia fecal humana; las tasas de infección pueden superar el 20% en países en vías de desarrollo. El hallazgo de este parásito en heces de diversas especies animales sugiere su potencial zoonótico. La relevancia clínica y el papel patógeno de Blastocystis spp. en el tracto intestinal son inciertos. Varias son las publicaciones que lo reconocen como agente etiológico de desórdenes intestinales como diarrea, enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal y colitis ulcerosa, aunque la patogenicidad de este parásito no ha sido probada. Este amplio rango de respuestas a la infección podría estar relacionado con la diversidad genética de los aislamientos provenientes de hospedadores infectados.


Blastocystis spp. is the most common protozoan detected in human stool samples. In developing countries, infection rates are higher than 20%. The presence of this parasite in the feces of several host species suggests its zoonotic potential. The clinical relevance and the pathogenic role of Blastocystis spp. in the intestinal tract remain unclear. There are several clinical reports that recognize it as the etiologic agent of several intestinal disorders such as diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease and ulcerative colitis, although the pathogenicity of this parasite has not been proved yet. This wide range of clinical manifestations could be related to the genetic diversity exhibited by this parasite.

Introduction: Various families of small horticultural producers who supply the regional market live in Pereyra Iraola Park. This paper addresses an integral parasitological study designed to assess the sanitary conditions in the place and their impact on human health. Material and methods: Serial human stool and anal swabs (n = 80), canine faeces (n = 8), farm animals (n = 12), and vegetables samples (n = 21) were analyzed. Concentration techniques by flotation and sedimentation were applied. Through semi-structured surveys socio-environmental variables were studied. Results: The study showed that 84% of the human population was parasitized. The highest prevalence corresponded to Blastocystis sp. (41.2%), Enterobius vermicularis (37.5%) and Entamoeba coli (33.7%). Significant associations between parasitic species were found. Trichuris vulpis (37.5%) was the most prevalent species in canines followed by Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala and Toxocara canis (25%). Farm animals showed Balantidium coli, Trichuris suis, Capillaria sp., Heterakis sp., Trichostrongylus sp., among others. In vegetables, amoeba cysts, coccidia oocysts, strongylid eggs and larvae of free-living nematodes were found. The presence of G. lamblia in the human population was significantly associated with irregular work of the mother, the lack of parental education and the possession of a vegetable garden. Conclusions: The results observed in the population, and species of zoonotic importance in animals and vegetables suggest that these studies should be furthered and control and environmental sanitation measures implemented in order to improve the quality of life of horticulturists and their productive activity


Introducción: En el parque Pereyra Iraola viven familias de pequeños productores hortícolas que abastecen al mercado regional. El presente trabajo aborda un estudio parasitológico integral, con el fin de evaluar las condiciones sanitarias y su impacto en la salud humana. Materiales y métodos: Se analizaron muestras seriadas de heces humanas y escobillado anal (n = 80), heces caninas (n = 8), de animales de cría (n = 12), y muestras de hortalizas (n = 21). Se aplicaron técnicas de concentración por flotación y sedimentación. Mediante encuestas semiestructuradas se relevaron variables socioambientales. Resultados: El 84% de la población humana resultó parasitada. Las mayores prevalencias correspondieron a Blastocystis sp. (41.2%), Enterobius vermicularis (37.5%) y Entamoeba coli (33.7%). Se hallaron asociaciones significativas entre especies parásitas. En perros, la especie más prevalente fue Trichuris vulpis (37.5%), seguida de Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala y Toxocara canis (25%). En animales de cría se halló Balantidium coli, Trichuris suis, Capillaria sp., Heterakis sp., Trichostrongylus sp., entre otros. En las hortalizas se encontraron quistes de amebas, ooquistes de coccidios, huevos de estrongilídeos y larvas de nematodes de vida libre. La presencia de G. lamblia en la población humana se asoció significativamente con trabajo inestable de la madre, falta de educación paterna y tenencia de huerta. Conclusiones: Los resultados observados en la población y las especies de importancia zoonótica en animales y hortalizas sugieren profundizar estos estudios y llevar adelante medidas de control y saneamiento ambiental, que mejoren la calidad de vida de los horticultores y su actividad productiva

The pathogenic potential of Blastocystis sp. in experimental models requires further investigation. In this work, the pathogenicity of this parasite in the gastrointestinal tract of male Swiss mice was evaluated according to the inoculum size and period of infection. Animals were infected intragastrically, with 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 Blastocystis sp. vacuolar forms obtained from a mixture of eight human isolates cultured axenically in Jones' medium. After seven, 14, 21, 28 and 60 days of infection, the animals were sacrificed and fragments of the small intestine (duodenum), large intestine, and cecum were subjected to histopathological analysis. Blastocystis sp. triggered an inflammatory response in the different tissues analyzed, with a predominance of mononuclear cells. The parasite was found in the muscular layer of the cecum, showing its invasive character. Larger inocula triggered inflammatory processes earlier (seven days) than smaller ones (from 21 days). We conclude that, in the proposed model, the pathogenicity of Blastocystis sp. isolates that were studied is related to inoculum size and period of infection.


Pouco é sabido sobre o potencial patogênico de Blastocystis sp. em modelos experimentais. Neste trabalho a patogenicidade desse parasito para o trato gastrointestinal de camundongos Swiss machos foi avaliada de acordo com o inóculo e tempo de infecção. Os animais foram infectados, via intragástrica, com 100, 500, 1.000, 5.000 e 10.000 formas vacuolares de Blastocystis sp. obtidos a partir de uma mistura de oito isolados humanos cultivados axenicamente em meio Jones. Após 7, 14, 21, 28 e 60 dias de infecção os animais foram sacrificados e fragmentos do intestino delgado (duodeno), grosso e ceco foram retirados para análise histopatológica. Blastocystis sp. desencadeou resposta inflamatória nos diferentes tecidos analisados, com predominância de infiltrado mononuclear. No ceco o parasito foi encontrado na túnica muscular mostrando seu caráter invasivo. Inóculos maiores desencadearam processos inflamatórios mais precocemente (7 dias) e inóculos menores mais tardiamente (a partir de 21 dias). Conclui-se que no modelo proposto a patogenicidade dos isolados de Blastocystis sp. estudados tem relação com o inóculo e tempo de infecção.

RESUMO

Introducción: Las parasitosis intestinales a nivel mundial son un problema de salud pública que afecta a los países en las zonas tropicales. Un grupo muy vulnerable a padecer este tipo de infección son los niños. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue determinar la prevalencia general de parásitos intestinales en las Unidades Educativas de Ciudad Bolívar, entre los años 2009 - 2013. Materiales y Métodos: Fueron obtenidos los trabajos de grado sobre el tema del Departamento de Parasitología y Microbiología y así se recolectaron datos sobre edad, sexo, tipo de parasito, especies y asociaciones parasitarias y poder calcular así dicha prevalencia general. Resultados: Se encontró una prevalencia general de 63,1% sin predilección por la edad o sexo. Los tipos de parásitos más prevalentes fueron los protozoarios con 83,5%. Las especies más prevalentes fueron Blastocystis spp con 39,7%, Entamoeba coli con 15,3%, y Giardia intestinalis con 13,4%. Las asociaciones parasitarias más frecuentes Blastocystis sppconEndolimax nana (21,1%) yBlastocystis sppcon Entamoeba coli. (7,4%). Discusión: Los resultados de este estudio guardan relación con estudios realizados a nivel nacional como internacional, con respecto a las prevalencias de parasitosis, el predominio de protozoarios sobre helmintos en los últimos años, y la indistinción de la infección parasitaria con respecto al género. Conclusiones: La prevalencia aquí estudiada a manera general es alta, se recomienda seguir haciendo este tipo de estudios en escuelas para denotar el impacto de estas infecciones en niños y la consecuencia que esto conlleva.


Introduction: The intestinal parasites are a worldwide public health problem that affects countries in tropical and subtropical areas, a very vulnerable group to suffer this kind of infection are children .The objective of this investigation was determine the general prevalence of parasitism intestinal in the Educational Units from Ciudad Bolívar, between the years 2009 - 2013. Materials and Methods: For this were reviewed the degree work’s about intestinal parasitism’s in the Department of Parasitology and Microbiology , ando so data was collected about, age, sex, parasite type, species and parasitic association, and so calculate the general prevalence Results: It was found a general prevalence of 63,1% no predilection for the age or sex. The parasite types more prevalent have be the protozoan with 83, 5%. The species more prevalente heve be Blastocystis spp with 39, 7% Entamoeba coli with 15, 3%, and Giardia intestinalis 13, 4%. The parasitic association most frequent Blastocystis spp / Endolimax nana (21,1%) and Blastocystis spp / Entamoeba coli (7,4%). Discussion: The results of this study relate to the work done at national and international level regarding the prevalence of parasitosis, the predominance of protozoa with respect to helminths, and indistinction of parasitic infection with regard to gender. Conclusions: The prevalence in all years studied here assessed globally is high, it is recommended to keep doing this type of study in schools to denote the impact of these infections in children and the consequences that this entails.
