RESUMEN

Studies based on drug-DNA interactions, especially anticancer drug-DNA interactions, are of great importance for the method development. It is thought that single-use electrodes, which give fast, cheap and reproducible results, will make a great contribution to the chip technology for the development of individual patient analysis in the future. It is known that antioxidants reduce carcinogenesis caused by oxidative stress with their radical scavenging effects. Literature shows that quercetin (QRCT) exhibits anticancer activity by preventing oxidative cell damage as an effective radical scavenger. In this study, Bendamustine (BND), an anticancer drug, which is used in different blood cancer types, was electrochemically determined and the toxicity degree was calculated by examining the interaction of the drug with DNA in the absence and presence of QRCT, which is the first examination in the literature. Limit of detection and quantification for BND was calculated as 6.0 and 20.0 µg/mL respectively by using the equation I = 0.029 × CBND+ 1.197, (R2 = 0.997). We found that QRCT prevents the interaction between BND and DNA because of its strong interaction with DNA.

RESUMEN

Membranous lipodystrophy is a distinct type of membranocystic fat necrosis. It is associated with many local and systemic diseases, including vascular disorders. The histopathological changes which characterize this phenomenon are variably sized cysts in the fat lobules of the subcutaneous tissue, which are surrounded by eosinophilic membranes projecting into the cystic space. We report a case of secondary membranous lipodystrophy associated with both hypertension and venous insufficiency.

RESUMEN

Linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" is characterized by atrophy and furrowing of the skin of the front parietal region above the level of the eyebrow. In most cases, it occurs as a single paramedian line that may be associated with hypoplasia of underlying structures and hemiatrophy of the face. The affected region is a depression that may be associated with hypoplasia of the underlying soft tissues and bone that results in facial hemiatrophy. If the lesion is narrow, it can be resected and directly sutured; in the case of a wide lesion, many different reconstructive techniques, directed at augmentation of deficient soft tissue volume, have been proposed such as autologous tissue grafts, biomaterials, pedicled flaps, and free flaps. Adipose-derived regenerative cells (ADRCs) can be easily processed from lipoaspirated fat and can provide a significant quantity of multipotent cells for a variety of therapeutic regenerative medicine therapies. There is an increasing interest in a possible therapeutic role of ADRCs from processed lipoaspirate for many applications, including their use as soft-tissue fillers. We introduce the application of a successful ADRC therapy for a linear scleroderma en coup de sabre deformity.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between acrochordons and the components of metabolic syndrome (MS). A total of 192 patients with at least one skin tag and 104 controls having no skin tag seen at an academic outpatient dermatology clinic were involved. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, blood pressure, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) values were measured. Oral glucose tolerance testing was performed. Patients with acrochordons were 64.6/35.4% female/male. The number of acrochordons was below 10 in 77.1% cases. The most frequent localization was the neck (72.4%). Acrochordons were smaller than 3 mm in 64.1% of the cases. Hypertension, diabetes and MS were significantly more frequent in patients with acrochordons than the control group. The acrochordon group showed significantly higher values of BMI, higher levels of TC, TG and LDL-C and significantly lower levels of HDL-C when compared with the control group. According to regression analysis, the number of acrochordons increased in patients with higher BMI values, 2-h plasma glucose, TC and LDL-C levels and lower HDL-C levels. These results support the suggestion that acrochordons are associated with the components of MS.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is a severe form of physical child abuse, and can even cause death. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether or not the primary healthcare workers had received any education regarding child abuse and neglect, whether they could diagnose the cases, whether they had sufficient knowledge about SBS as a part of child abuse, and whether they were in need of education on the topic. METHODS: Health workers in the primary healthcare centers in the province of Kayseri were enrolled. A questionnaire was applied. RESULTS: In this study, 35.0% of the study group were physicians. 43.7% of the study group stated that they had not recieved any education regarding child abuse and neglect, and 52.1% stated that they believed that physical abuse was the most prominent form of abuse in society. While 64.1% of the participants stated that they had heard about SBS, 10.4% of these stated that they had heard about it, but did not have adequate knowledge on the topic. CONCLUSION: There is a lack of knowledge and a need for education regarding child abuse and neglect among the personnel working in primary healthcare, especially on the subject of SBS. Undergraduate and postgraduate education regarding child abuse and SBS will help to increase the number of people well-informed and sensitive to this important issue.
