BACKGROUND Stainless-steel crowns (SSCs) have been the most effective and efficient methods of tooth restoration in pediatric dentistry, and they have shown consistently high success rates. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, awareness, and practice of SSCs among dental professionals in Sana'a City, Yemen. MATERIAL AND METHODS A modified questionnaire was prepared from previous similar studies and distributed to 700 participants. It consisted of 3 parts: the first was related to participant characteristics; the second consisted of questions related to knowledge and awareness of SSCs such as indications, advantages, challenges, and parent's rejection to SSCs; and the third part was correlated to questions related to the use and practice of SSCs, number of children treated, and SSCs cemented per week. Statistical significance was determined using a chi-square test, and the P value was set at <0.05 for statistical significance. RESULTS A total of 604 dental professionals answered the questionnaire, 159 (26.3%) had used SSC restoration, and 12 (80.0%) of them had a degree in pediatric dentistry, with significant differences among participants (P<0.000). Respondents with higher academic qualifications recorded higher percentages in using SSCs during their clinics, with significant differences (P<0.005). A significant difference was detected between general practitioners and pedodontists in practice questions (P=0.000). Most of the respondents (78.8%) indicated a desire for more practice and hands-on training in use of SSCs. CONCLUSIONS General dentists in Sana'a City, Yemen, do not frequently use SSCs. Most of the respondents stated that they lacked practical training and expressed a need for further knowledge and continuing education.

Smoking has emerged as a predominant risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) in India, contributing significantly to the country's rising cardiovascular morbidity and mortality rates. The adverse effects of tobacco on cardiovascular health are well-documented, exacerbating a public health challenge in a nation with a high prevalence of smoking. Therefore, it is of interest to analyse the impact of smoking on the incidence and progression of coronary artery disease among the Indian population, emphasizing the need for targeted public health interventions to mitigate this risk factor. We included 1000 adults were enrolled from January to July 2023. The group comprised 500 CAD patients (cases) and 500 individuals without CAD (controls). We gathered information on demographics, smoking habits & other CAD risk factors. To assess the relationships between smoking, CAD, and other variables, we utilized multivariate logistic regression. The analysis revealed that current smokers had a substantially increased likelihood of CAD, with an unadjusted odds ratio (OR) of 3.20 (95% CI: 2.45-4.18), compared to non-smokers. This association remained significant even after adjusting for confounders, with an adjusted OR of 2.80 (95% CI: 2.10-3.75). The study confirms smoking as a critical, Adaptable risk element for CAD, independently increasing the risk of the disease. Smoking significantly elevates the risk of developing coronary artery disease among Indians. Comprehensive anti-smoking campaigns and stringent tobacco control policies are imperative to reduce the burden of CAD. Public health strategies must focus on awareness, prevention, and cessation support to combat this major health threat effectively.

Introduction: Region-specific data on individual factors associated with uptake of breast and cervical cancer screening or early testing in diverse Indian populations are limited. Aim: To assess the prevalence and individual determinants of uptake of breast and/or cervical cancer screening or testing among women aged 30-69 years in regionally representative populations of two large Indian cities: New Delhi and Chennai. Methods: We conducted an analysis of the cross-sectional data (2016-2017) nested within the Centre for Cardiometabolic Risk Reduction in South Asia cohort, established in 2010-2011 with 12,271 participants (5365 in New Delhi; 6906 in Chennai). Among 3310 women participants, we evaluated the associations of demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle, medical, psychosocial, and reproductive factors with breast and/or cervical cancer screening or testing using multivariable logistic regression models with results expressed as adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: At any point prior to 2016-2017, 193 women self-reported having undergone evaluations for breast and/or cervical cancer. The reasons for evaluation were 'general examination' or 'physician's advice' (i.e., screening) or 'being symptomatic' (i.e., early testing). The overall prevalence was 5.8% for screening or testing and 2.5% for screening alone. Formal education (OR:1.88; 95% CI:1.12-3.15), high monthly household income (OR:2.27; 95% CI:1.59-3.25) and less 'fear-of-judgement' (OR:1.65; 95% CI:1.05-2.58) were positively associated with screening or testing uptake. When screening uptake was analysed separately, the results were generally similar. Conclusion: Our findings may have important implications for interventions at community-level (e.g., reducing 'fear-of-judgement', increasing awareness to screening programs and early symptoms) and health-system level (e.g., opportunistic screening).

STUDY QUESTION: Can human pre- and peri-pubertal testicular cells obtained from childhood cancer patients, previously treated with chemotherapy, form testicular organoids (TOs)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Organoid formation from testicular tissue collected from childhood cancer patients positively correlates with SRY-Box transcription factor 9 (SOX9) expression in Sertoli cells, which in turn negatively correlates with previous exposure to alkylating chemotherapy. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Pre- and peri-pubertal boys exposed to highly gonadotoxic therapies can only safeguard their fertility potential through testicular tissue cryopreservation. Today, there is no established clinical tool to restore fertility using these testicular samples. Organoids hold promise in providing fundamental early insights in creating such platforms. However, the generation of TOs that closely resemble the innate testis, to enable a thorough monitoring of the necessary steps for germ cell differentiation and somatic functionalities, remains a challenge. STUDY DESIGN SIZE DURATION: We used a Matrigel-based three-layer gradient culture system to generate human TOs and to reveal whether chemotherapy exposure affects TO formation capacity and the functionality of pre- and peri-pubertal testicular somatic cells. Testicular cells of 11 boys (aged 7.7 ± 4.1 (mean ± SD) years) were assessed for TO formation in relation to previous chemotherapy exposure and SOX9 expression in histological sections of paraffin-embedded testicular tissue samples collected on the day of biopsy and compared with testicular tissue samples obtained from 28 consecutive patients (aged 6.9 ± 3.8 (mean ± SD) years). All 39 patients were part of the fertility preservation project NORDFERTIL; an additional 10 samples (from boys aged 5.5 ± 3.5 (mean ± SD) years, without an underlying pathology) in an internal biobank collection were used as controls. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS SETTING METHODS: We obtained 49 testicular tissue samples from boys aged 0.8-13.4 years. Fresh samples (n = 11) were dissociated into single-cell suspensions and applied to a three-layer gradient culture system for organoid formation. Histological sections of another 28 samples obtained as part of the fertility preservation project NORDFERTIL, and 10 samples from a sample collection of a pathology biobank were used to evaluate the effects of prior exposure to alkylating agents on testicular samples. Testicular organoid formation was defined based on morphological features, such as compartmentalized structures showing cord formation, and protein expression of testicular cell-specific markers for germ and somatic cells was evaluated via immunohistochemical staining. Hormone secretion was analysed by specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for testosterone and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) production. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: Our results revealed that 4 out of 11 prepubertal testicular samples formed TOs that showed compartmentalized cord-like structures surrounded by interstitial-like areas and increasing levels of both testosterone as well as AMH over a 7-day culture period. We observed that SOX9 expression was correlated positively with TO formation. Moreover, exposure to alkylating agents before biopsy was inversely correlated with SOX9 expression (P = 0.006). LARGE SCALE DATA: N/A. LIMITATIONS REASONS FOR CAUTION: Due to the limited amount of material available, only 11 out of the 39 pre- and peri-pubertal testicular tissue samples could be used for the organoid formation experiments. The testicular tissue samples obtained from a sample collection of the internal biobank of Department of Pathology, Karolinska University Hospital were considered normal and included in the study if no testicular pathology was reported. However, detailed information regarding previous medical treatments and/or testicular volumes of the patients included in this biobank was not available. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: Our observations suggest that SOX9 expression may serve as a putative indicator of TO formation, indicating a critical role of Sertoli cells in promoting organoid formation, seminiferous tubule integrity, and testicular function in pre- and peri-pubertal testicular tissue. Air pollution in industrial environments, particularly in the chrome plating process, poses significant health risks to workers due to high concentrations of hazardous pollutants. Exposure to substances like hexavalent chromium, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and particulate matter can lead to severe health issues, including respiratory problems and lung cancer. Continuous monitoring and timely intervention are crucial to mitigate these risks. Traditional air quality monitoring methods often lack real-time data analysis and predictive capabilities, limiting their effectiveness in addressing pollution hazards proactively. This paper introduces a real-time air pollution monitoring and forecasting system specifically designed for the chrome plating industry. The system, supported by Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and AI approaches, detects a wide range of air pollutants, including NH3, CO, NO2, CH4, CO2, SO2, O3, PM2.5, and PM10, and provides real-time data on pollutant concentration levels. Data collected by the sensors are processed using LSTM, Random Forest, and Linear Regression models to predict pollution levels. The LSTM model achieved a coefficient of variation (R²) of 99 % and a mean absolute percentage error (MAE) of 0.33 for temperature and humidity forecasting. For PM2.5, the Random Forest model outperformed others, achieving an R² of 84 % and an MAE of 10.11. The system activates factory exhaust fans to circulate air when high pollution levels are predicted to occur in the next hours, allowing for proactive measures to improve air quality before issues arise. This innovative approach demonstrates significant advancements in industrial environmental monitoring, enabling dynamic responses to pollution and improving air quality in industrial settings.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) pose a significant global health challenge, constituting over 80% of mortality and morbidity. This burden is particularly pronounced in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Ethiopia. Despite this, there's limited research on this issue in Africa. This study aims to investigate the prevalence, patterns, and outcomes of NCDs in hospitalized populations across three tertiary hospitals in Ethiopia. METHODS: A hospital-based cohort study (August 2022 - January 2023) included patients aged 14 and older diagnosed with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), diabetes mellitus (DM), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or cancer at three Ethiopian hospitals. Data on demographics, socio-economic factors, clinical characteristics, and outcomes were collected through medical records and interviews. Logistic regression identified factors independently associated with in-hospital mortality, with p ≤ 0.05 considered statistically significant. RESULTS: In the study across three tertiary hospitals involving 2,237 patients, we uncovered the impact of NCDs. About 23.4% of patients struggled with NCDs, with cardiovascular diseases (53.3%), cancer (29.6%), diabetes (6.1%), and respiratory diseases (6.5%) being the most prevalent. Notably, among those affected, women comprised a slight majority (55.1%), with the average patient age being 47.2 years. Unfortunately, 15.3% of patients with NCDs faced in-hospital mortality. Our analysis revealed predictors of mortality, including cancer diagnosis (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]:1.6, 95% CI: 1.2-1.8, p = 0.01), medication adherence ( AOR: 0.36, 95% CI: 0.21-0.64, p < 0.001), concurrent infections (AOR: 0.36, 95% CI: 0.16-0.86, p < 0.001), chronic kidney diseases (CKD) (AOR: 0.35, 95% CI: 0.14-0.85, p = 0.02), and complications during hospitalization (AOR: 6.36, 95% CI: 3.45-11.71, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our study reveals a substantial prevalence of NCDs among hospitalized patients, affecting approximately one in four individuals, primarily with CVDs and cancer. Alarmingly, a significant proportion of these patients did not survive their hospitalization, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted interventions to enhance outcomes in this population.

BACKGROUND: The associations of vegetarian diets with risks for site-specific cancers have not been estimated reliably due to the low number of vegetarians in previous studies. Therefore, the Cancer Risk in Vegetarians Consortium was established. The aim is to describe and compare the baseline characteristics between non-vegetarian and vegetarian diet groups and between the collaborating studies. METHODS: We harmonised individual-level data from 11 prospective cohort studies from Western Europe, North America, South Asia and East Asia. Comparisons of food intakes, sociodemographic and lifestyle factors were made between diet groups and between cohorts using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: 2.3 million participants were included; 66% women and 34% men, with mean ages at recruitment of 57 (SD: 7.8) and 57 (8.6) years, respectively. There were 2.1 million meat eaters, 60,903 poultry eaters, 44,780 pescatarians, 81,165 vegetarians, and 14,167 vegans. Food intake differences between the diet groups varied across the cohorts; for example, fruit and vegetable intakes were generally higher in vegetarians than in meat eaters in all the cohorts except in China. BMI was generally lower in vegetarians, particularly vegans, except for the cohorts in India and China. In general, but with some exceptions, vegetarians were also more likely to be highly educated and physically active and less likely to smoke. In the available resurveys, stability of diet groups was high in all the cohorts except in China. CONCLUSIONS: Food intakes and lifestyle factors of both non-vegetarians and vegetarians varied markedly across the individual cohorts, which may be due to differences in both culture and socioeconomic status, as well as differences in questionnaire design. Therefore, care is needed in the interpretation of the impacts of vegetarian diets on cancer risk.

Introduction: Associations between markers of impaired kidney function and adverse outcomes among South Asians is understudied and could differ from existing data derived mostly from North American or European cohorts. Methods: We conducted a prospective analysis of 9797 participants from the ongoing cardiometabolic risk reduction study in South Asia, India. We examined the associations between baseline spot urine albumin-to-creatinine (UACR) ratio and creatinine-based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) estimating equations with all-cause mortality using Cox proportional hazards regression, adjusting for baseline age, sex, diabetes, systolic blood pressure, tobacco, history of cardiovascular disease, and cholesterol. Additionally, we calculated population attributable fraction (PAF) for both markers. Results: Over a median 7-year follow-up, with 66,909 person-years, 791 deaths occurred. At baseline, the weighted prevalence of UACR ≥ 30 mg/g and eGFRCKD-EPI 2009 <60 ml/min per 1.73 m2 was 6.6% and 1.6%, respectively. The risk for mortality was increased with higher UACR (10-30 hazard ratio [HR]: 1.6 [1.2-2.1]), 30-300 HR: 2.4 [1.8-3.1]), and ≥300 (HR: 6.0 [3.8-9.4] relative to UACR <10 mg/g). Risk for mortality was also higher with lower eGFRCKD-EPI 2009 (44-30; HR: 4.5 [2.5-8.3] and <30 HR: 7.0 [3.7-13.0], relative to 90-104 ml/min per 1.73 m2). PAF for mortality because of UACR ≥30 mg/g and eGFRCKD-EPI 2009 <45 ml/min per 1.73 m2 were 24.4% and 13.4%, respectively. Conclusion: Single-time point assessment of UACR ≥30 mg/g or eGFRCKD-EPI 2009 <45 ml/min per 1.73 m2 portends higher mortality risk among urban South Asians. Because albuminuria is common and associated with accelerated decline in GFR, screening and targeted efforts to reduce albuminuria are warranted.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer continues to be the most common malignancy and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Ethiopia. The poor prognosis and high mortality rate of breast cancer patients in the country are largely caused by late-stage diagnosis. Hence, understanding the epidemiology of late-stage diagnosis is essential to address this important problem. However, previous reports in Ethiopia indicated inconsistent findings. Therefore, this literature review was conducted to generate dependable evidence by summarizing the prevalence and determinants of late-stage diagnosis among breast cancer patients in Ethiopia. METHODS: Pertinent articles were retrieved by systematically searching on major electronic databases and gray literature. Data were extracted into an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using the STATA 17 statistical software. The pooled estimates were summarized using the random effect meta-analysis model. Heterogeneity and small study effect were evaluated using the I2 statistics and Egger's regression test in conjunction with the funnel plot, respectively. Meta-regression, sub-group analysis, and sensitivity analysis were also employed. Protocol registration number: CRD42024496237. RESULTS: The pooled prevalence of late-stage diagnosis after combining reports of 24 studies with 8,677 participants was 65.85 (95% CI: 58.38, 73.32). Residence (adjusted OR: 1.92; 95% CI: 1.45, 2.53), patient delay at their first presentation (adjusted OR: 2.65; 95% CI: 1.56, 4.49), traditional medicine use (adjusted OR: 2.54; 95% CI: 1.89, 3.41), and breast self-examination practice (adjusted OR: 0.28; 95% CI: 0.09, 0.88) were significant determinants of late-stage diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Two-thirds of breast cancer patients in Ethiopia were diagnosed at an advanced stage. Residence, delay in the first presentation, traditional medicine use, and breast self-examination practice were significantly associated with late-stage diagnosis. Public education about breast cancer and its early detection techniques is crucial to reduce mortality and improve the survival of patients. Besides, improving access to cancer screening services is useful to tackle the disease at its curable stages.

Marrubium rotundifolium Boiss. is an endemic plant distributed in Aegean Region of Türkiye. It's traditionally used in Anatolian medicine for treatment of cold and flu, dyspepsia, costiveness and intestinal spasms. However, phytochemical studies on the plant are limited. In the present study, five phenolic glycosides 4',5,6,7-tetramethoxy scutellarein (1), apigenin-7-O-(3"-O-E-p-coumaroyl)-ß-d-glucopyranoside (2), tiliroside (3), 4-(ß-d-glucopyranosyloxy) benzoic acid (4), and astragalin (5) were isolated from the aerial parts of M. rotundifolium and their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods (1D and 2D NMR, and MALDI-TOF/MS). Moreover, anti--inflammatory activities of the isolated compounds were evaluated by measurements of interleukins (IL-1ß, IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels. Tiliroside exhibited the highest potency in all pathways. At concentrations of 3 and 6 µg/mL, it significantly decreased the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1ß (192.53 and 175.54 pg/mL), IL-6 (925.52 and 946.81 pg/mL), and TNF- α (6465.86 and 6267.67 pg/mL). This is the first report on phenolic profile of endemic M. rotundifolium. The anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic activity potential of the plant should be investigated in further studies.

BACKGROUND: After decades of praziquantel mass drug administration (MDA), several countries approach schistosomiasis elimination. Continuing MDA in largely uninfected populations no longer seems justified. Alternative interventions to maintain the gains or accelerate interruption of transmission are needed. We report results, strengths, and shortcomings of novel test-treat-track-test-treat (5T) interventions in low Schistosoma haematobium prevalence areas on Pemba, Tanzania. METHODS: School- and household-based surveys were conducted in 2021 and 2022 to monitor the S. haematobium and microhematuria prevalence and assess the impact of interventions. In 2021, 5T interventions were implemented in 15 low-prevalence areas and included: (i) testing schoolchildren in primary and Islamic schools for microhematuria as a proxy for S. haematobium, (ii) treating positive children, (iii) tracking them to their households and to water bodies they frequented, (iv) testing individuals at households and water bodies, and (v) treating positive individuals. Additionally, test-and-treat interventions were implemented in the 22 health facilities of the study area. RESULTS: The S. haematobium prevalence in the school-based survey in 15 low-prevalence implementation units was 0.5% (7/1560) in 2021 and 0.4% (6/1645) in 2022. In the household-based survey, 0.5% (14/2975) and 0.7% (19/2920) of participants were infected with S. haematobium in 2021 and 2022, respectively. The microhematuria prevalence, excluding trace results, in the school-based survey was 1.4% (21/1560) in 2021 and 1.5% (24/1645) in 2022. In the household-based survey, it was 3.3% (98/2975) in 2021 and 5.4% (159/2920) in 2022. During the 5T interventions, the microhaematuria prevalence was 3.8% (140/3700) and 5.8% (34/594) in children in primary and Islamic schools, respectively, 17.1% (44/258) in household members, and 16.7% (10/60) in people at water bodies. In health facilities, 19.8% (70/354) of patients tested microhematuria-positive. CONCLUSIONS: The targeted 5T interventions maintained the very low S. haematobium prevalence and proved straightforward and feasible to identify and treat many of the few S. haematobium-infected individuals. Future research will show whether 5T interventions can maintain gains in the longer-term and expedite elimination. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ISRCTN, ISCRCTN91431493. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer, with 99% of cases linked to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. It reflects global inequity as its burden is highest in low- and middle-income countries. The aim of this study was to determine the HPV vaccination coverage and its determinant factors among young women in the three sub-Saharan African countries. Data from the Demographic and Health Surveys among three sub-Saharan African countries were used for analysis. A total of 4,952 women were included in the study. Stata 14 was used to analyze the data. The determinants of the outcome variable were identified using a multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression model. Factors with p-values < 0.05 at 95% confidence interval were declared statistically significant. About 7.5% young women were vaccinated for HPV vaccine against cervical cancer in the current study. Younger age, use of internet, rich economic class, and individual-level media exposure were found to be favorable conditions, whereas being employed was negatively associated with HPV vaccination. Only few segments of young women in these three countries got HPV vaccination. The authors recommend that increasing internet use, media exposure, and economic level of young women will increase the HPV vaccination rates. Furthermore, creating awareness among employed women will also increase the possibility of HPV vaccination.

Dysphagia lusoria occurs due to compression of the esophagus as an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) crosses the mediastinum. Surgical management includes open, hybrid, and endovascular techniques, with no consensus gold standard. There are few reports of robotic-assisted ARSA resection. We describe the innovative technique and outcomes for two patients who successfully underwent robotic-assisted transthoracic resection of an ARSA after right carotid-subclavian bypass for dysphagia lusoria. Both patients experienced improvement or resolution of their dysphagia and no major complications. In select patients with a noncalcified origin of the ARSA without aneurysmal degeneration, the robotic-assisted approach represents a viable option.

Pancreatic cancer remains a significant health issue with limited treatment options. The tumor stroma, a complex environment made up of different cells and proteins, plays a crucial role in tumor growth and chemoresistance. Targeting tumor stroma, consisting of diverse non-tumor cells such as fibroblasts, extracellular matrix (ECM), immune cells, and also pre-vascular cells is encouraging for remodeling solid cancers, such as pancreatic cancer. Remodeling the stroma of pancreas tumors can be suggested as a strategy for reducing resistance to chemo/immunotherapy. Several studies have shown that phytochemicals from plants can affect the tumor environment and have anti-cancer properties. By targeting key pathways involved in stromal activation, phytochemicals may disrupt communication between the tumor and stroma and make tumor cells more sensitive to different treatments. Additionally, phytochemicals have immunomodulatory and anti-angiogenic properties, all of which contribute to their potential in treating pancreatic cancer. This review will provide a detailed look at how phytochemicals impact the tumor stroma and their effects on pancreatic tumor growth, spread, and response to treatment. It will also explore the potential of combining phytochemicals with other treatment options like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiation.

Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), a well-known regulator of cholesterol metabolism and cardiovascular diseases, has recently garnered attention for its emerging involvement in cancer biology. The multifunctional nature of PCSK9 extends beyond lipid regulation and encompasses a wide range of cellular processes that can influence cancer progression. Studies have revealed that PCSK9 can modulate signaling pathways, such as PI3K/Akt, MAPK, and Wnt/ß-catenin, thereby influencing cellular proliferation, survival, and angiogenesis. Additionally, the interplay between PCSK9 and cholesterol homeostasis may impact membrane dynamics and cellular migration, further influencing tumor aggressiveness. The central role of the immune system in monitoring and controlling cancer is increasingly recognized. Recent research has demonstrated the ability of PCSK9 to modulate immune responses through interactions with immune cells and components of the tumor microenvironment. This includes effects on dendritic cell maturation, T cell activation, and cytokine production, suggesting a role in shaping antitumor immune responses. Moreover, the potential influence of PCSK9 on immune checkpoints such as PD1/PD-L1 lends an additional layer of complexity to its immunomodulatory functions. The growing interest in cancer immunotherapy has prompted exploration into the potential of targeting PCSK9 for therapeutic benefits. Preclinical studies have demonstrated synergistic effects between PCSK9 inhibitors and established immunotherapies, offering a novel avenue for combination treatments. The strategic manipulation of PCSK9 to enhance tumor immunity and improve therapeutic outcomes presents an exciting area for further investigations. Understanding the mechanisms by which PCSK9 influences cancer biology and immunity holds promise for the development of novel immunotherapeutic approaches. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the intricate connections between PCSK9, cancer pathogenesis, tumor immunity, and the potential implications for immunotherapeutic interventions.

Introduction: In this cross-sectional study, the authors explored the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to artificial intelligence (AI) among medical students in Sudan. With AI increasingly impacting healthcare, understanding its integration into medical education is crucial. This study aimed to assess the current state of AI awareness, perceptions, and practical experiences among medical students in Sudan. The authors aimed to evaluate the extent of AI familiarity among Sudanese medical students by examining their attitudes toward its application in medicine. Additionally, this study seeks to identify the factors influencing knowledge levels and explore the practical implementation of AI in the medical field. Method: A web-based survey was distributed to medical students in Sudan via social media platforms and e-mail during October 2023. The survey included questions on demographic information, knowledge of AI, attitudes toward its applications, and practical experiences. The descriptive statistics, χ2 tests, logistic regression, and correlations were analyzed using SPSS version 26.0. Results: Out of the 762 participants, the majority exhibited a basic understanding of AI, but detailed knowledge of its applications was limited. Positive attitudes toward the importance of AI in diagnosis, radiology, and pathology were prevalent. However, practical application of these methods was infrequent, with only a minority of the participants having hands-on experience. Factors influencing knowledge included the lack of a formal curriculum and gender disparities. Conclusion: This study highlights the need for comprehensive AI education in medical training programs in Sudan. While participants displayed positive attitudes, there was a notable gap in practical experience. Addressing these gaps through targeted educational interventions is crucial for preparing future healthcare professionals to navigate the evolving landscape of AI in medicine. Recommendations: Policy efforts should focus on integrating AI education into the medical curriculum to ensure readiness for the technological advancements shaping the future of healthcare.

Low-temperature events are one of the leading environmental cues that considerably reduce plant growth and shift species biodiversity. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a signaling molecule that has a distinguished role during unfavorable conditions and shows outstanding perspectives in low-temperature stress. Herein, we elucidated the protective role and regulatory mechanism of H2O2 in alleviating the deleterious effects of low-temperature stress in pitaya plants. Micropropagated pitaya plants were cultured in Murashige and Skoog media supplemented with different levels of H2O2 (0, 5, 10, and 20 mM) and then exposed to low-temperature stress (5 °C for 24 h). H2O2 at 10 mM, improved low-temperature stress tolerance by relieving oxidative injuries and ameliorating growth parameters in terms of fresh weight (66.7%), plant length (16.7%), and pigments content viz., chlorophyll a (157.4%), chlorophyll b (209.1%), and carotenoids (225.9%). H2O2 counteracted the low-temperature stress by increasing amino acids (224.7%), soluble proteins (190.5%), and sugars (126.6%). Simultaneously, secondary metabolites like ascorbic acid (ASA), anthocyanins, phenolics, flavonoids, total antioxidant (TOA), and proline were also up-regulated by H2O2 (104.9%, 128.8%, 166.3%, 141.4%, and 436.4%, respectively). These results corresponded to the stimulative role triggered by H2O2 in boosting the activities of catalase (22.4%), ascorbate peroxidase (20.7%), superoxide dismutase (88.4%), polyphenol oxidase (60.7%), soluble peroxidase (23.8%), and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (57.1%) as well as the expression level of HpCAT, HpAPX, HpSOD, HpPPO, and HpPAL genes, which may help to moderate low-temperature stress. In conclusion, our findings stipulate new insights into the mechanisms by which H2O2 regulates low-temperature stress tolerance in pitaya plants.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is the second most common malignancy in Ethiopia and first in some African countries. It is six times more likely to occur in positive cases of the human immunodeficiency virus than in the general population. If diagnosed and treated early enough, cervical cancer is both treatable and preventable. However, among Ethiopian women who test positive for HIV, the uptake of cervical cancer screening is low. Its determinant factors were not well studied in the study area. Hence, this study was aimed at filling this information gap. OBJECTIVE: To assess uptake of cervical cancer screening services and associated factors among HIV-positive women attending an adult antiretroviral treatment clinic at public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, June 1-30, 2022. METHODS: A cross-sectional investigation was carried out in a hospital. 407 participants in all were chosen using the systematic sampling technique. A pretested interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data from respondents. The data were entered into Epi data version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis was employed. Adjusted odds ratio with its 95% confidence interval and p value < 0.05 were used to estimate the strength and significance of the association. RESULT: Among a total of 407 respondents, 238 (58.5%), 95% CI (53.5-63.3), HIV-positive women were screened at least once in the last five years. In multivariable analysis, age > 45 years old (AOR = 0.18, 95% CI: 0.053-0.644), number of children (3 children) (AOR = 0.19, 95% CI:0.036-0.979), perception of being susceptible to cervical cancer (AOR = 6.39, 95% CI: 1.79-22.74), knowledge of cervical cancer and its screening (AOR = 19.34, 95% CI: 7.87-47.75), and positive attitude towards cervical cancer screening (AOR = 8.06, 95% CI:3.62-17.91) were significantly associated factors with the uptake of cervical cancer screening. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION: in this study, Age > 45 years, having less than three children, feeling susceptible, knowing about cervical cancer and screening, and having a positive attitude toward cervical cancer screening were significant factor of uptake of cervical cancer screening service. There is a need to strengthen the policy and health education on safe sexual practices and healthy lifestyles through information dissemination and communication to scale up screening service utilization.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the impact of completion intraoperative venography on clinical outcomes for axillosubclavian vein (AxSCV) thrombosis owing to venous thoracic outlet syndrome (vTOS). METHODS: We performed a retrospective, single-center review of all patients with vTOS treated with first rib resection (FRR) and intraoperative venography from 2011 to 2023. We reviewed intraoperative venographic films to classify findings and collected demographics, clinical and perioperative variables, and clinical outcomes. Primary end points were symptomatic relief and primary patency at 3 months and 1 year. Secondary end points were time free from symptoms, reintervention rate, perioperative complications, and mortality. RESULTS: Fifty-one AxSCVs (49 patients; mean age, 31.3 ± 12.6 years; 52.9% female) were treated for vTOS with FRR and external venolysis followed by completion intraoperative venography with a mean follow up of 15.5 ± 13.5 months. Before FRR, 32 underwent catheter-directed thrombolysis (62.7%). Completion intraoperative venography identified 16 patients with no stenosis (group 1, 31.3%), 17 with no stenosis after angioplasty (group 2, 33.3%), 10 with residual stenosis after angioplasty (group 3, 19.7%), and 8 with complete occlusion (group 4, 15.7%). The overall symptomatic relief was 44 of 51 (86.3%) and did not differ between venographic classifications (group 1, 14 of 16; group 2, 13 of 17; group 3, 10 of 10; and group 4, 7 of 8; log-rank test, P = .5). The overall 3-month and 1-year primary patency was 42 of 43 (97.7%) and 32 of 33 (97.0%), respectively (group 1, 16 of 16 and 9 of 9; group 2, 16 of 17 and 12 of 13; group 3, 10 of 10, 5 of 5; group 4, primary patency not obtained). There was one asymptomatic rethrombosis that resolved with anticoagulation, and three patients underwent reintervention with venous angioplasty for significant symptom recurrence an average 2.89 ± 1.7 months after FRR. CONCLUSIONS: Our single-center retrospective study demonstrates that FRR with completion intraoperative venography has excellent symptomatic relief and short- and mid-term patency despite residual venous stenosis and complete occlusion. Although completion intraoperative venographic classification did not correlate with adverse outcomes, this protocol yielded excellent results and provides important clinical data for postoperative management. Our results also support a conservative approach to AxSCV occlusion identified after FRR.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is crucial for maintaining concrete infrastructure. The data collected by these sensors are processed and analyzed using various analysis tools under different loadings and exposure to external conditions. Sensor-based investigation on concrete has been carried out for technologies used for designing structural health monitoring sensors. A Sensor-Infused Structural Analysis such as interfacial bond-slip model, corroded steel bar, fiber-optic sensors, carbon black and polypropylene fiber, concrete cracks, concrete carbonation, strain transfer model, and vibrational-based monitor. The compressive strength (CS) and split tensile strength (STS) values of the analyzed material fall within a range from 26 to 36 MPa and from 2 to 3 MPa, respectively. The material being studied has a range of flexural strength (FS) and density values that fall between 4.5 and 7 MPa and between 2250 and 2550 kg/m3. The average squared difference between the predicted and actual compressive strength values was found to be 4.405. With cement ratios of 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5, the shear strength value ranged from 4.4 to 5.6 MPa. The maximum shear strength was observed for a water-cement ratio of 0.4, with 5.5 MPa, followed by a water-cement ratio of 0.3, with 5 MPa. Optimizing the water-cement ratio achieves robust concrete (at 0.50), while a lower ratio may hinder strength (at 0.30). PZT sensors and stress-wave measurements aid in the precise structural monitoring, enhanced by steel fibers and carbon black, for improved sensitivity and mechanical properties. These findings incorporate a wide range of applications, including crack detection; strain and deformation analysis; and monitoring of temperature, moisture, and corrosion. This review pioneers sensor technology for concrete monitoring (Goal 9), urban safety (Goal 11), climate resilience (Goal 13), coastal preservation (Goal 14), and habitat protection (Goal 15) of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
