RESUMEN

Reptiles are the least studied vertebrates regarding the impact of pesticides on their health, despite being good models for ecotoxicological studies given their abundance and easy handling. Salvator merianae is widely distributed in South America and often found in agricultural cultivation areas. Here, we compared the morphological, biochemical, and physiological parameters of S. merianae from an exposed area (EA) to pesticides and a reference area (RA) or control. These parameters were measured in plasma (albumin, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, glucose, total proteins, uric acid, triglycerides, VLDL, and corticosterone) and in erythrocytes (TBARS, glutathione S-transferase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activity). Blood samples were collected from 28 lizards (EA: three juveniles, three adult females, and three adult males; RA: nine juveniles, four females, and five males) in southern Brazil during the reproductive period. We observed a decrease in body mass, the ratio between body mass and total length and snout-vent length in juvenile lizards collected at EA. The levels of TBARS, glutathione S-transferase, triglycerides, VLDL, and uric acid were altered for juveniles in EA. When comparing the two areas, females differed in superoxide dismutase activity and total proteins, while males differed in superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase activity. This set of results shows that S. merianae, especially juveniles, suffers a negative impact when inserted in an agricultural area. The analyzed biomarkers proved suitable for monitoring these lizards and the quality of this environment.

RESUMEN

Abstract Under salt stress conditions, plant growth is reduced due to osmotic, nutritional and oxidative imbalance. However, salicylic acid acts in the mitigation of this abiotic stress by promoting an increase in growth, photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, synthesis of osmoregulators and antioxidant enzymes. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the effect of salicylic acid doses on the growth and physiological changes of eggplant seedlings under salt stress. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, where the treatments were distributed in randomized blocks using a central composite matrix Box with five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (CEw) (0.50; 1.08; 2.50; 3.92 and 4.50 dS m-1), associated with five doses of salicylic acid (SA) (0.00; 0.22; 0.75; 1.28 and 1.50 mM), with four repetitions and each plot composed of three plants. At 40 days after sowing, plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, electrolyte leakage, relative water content, and total dry mass were determined. ECw and SA application influenced the growth and physiological changes of eggplant seedlings. Increasing the ECw reduced growth in the absence of SA. Membrane damage with the use of SA remained stable up to 3.9 dS m-1 of ECw. The relative water content independent of the CEw increased with 1.0 mM of SA. The use of SA at the concentration of 1.0 mM mitigated the deleterious effect of salinity on seedling growth up to 2.50 dS m-1 of ECw.

Background: In patients with established heart failure (HF) low total cholesterol levels associate with worse prognosis. Evidence concerning the impact of Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) in HF is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of LDL-c in patients with HF, both with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed outpatients with chronic HF with systolic dysfunction followed in our HF clinic from January/2012 to May/2018. LDL-c was calculated using the Friedewald's formula. Patients without a complete lipid profile were excluded. The endpoint under analysis was all-cause mortality. Patients were followed until January/2021. A Cox-regression analysis was used to study the prognostic impact of LDL-c. The LDL-c cut-off used was 100 mg/dL (mean value). Analysis was stratified according to the coexistence of DM. Multivariate models were built adjusting for age, sex, coronary artery disease, atherosclerotic non-coronary artery disease, arterial hypertension, smoking status, statin use, severity of systolic dysfunction, creatinine clearance and evidence-based therapy. Results: We studied 522 chronic HF patients, mean age was 70 years, 66.5% males. Severe systolic dysfunction was present in 42.7%, 30.5% had coronary heart disease, 60.5% had arterial hypertension, 41.6% had DM. A total of 92.0% were treated with beta blocker, 87.5% with an ACEi/ARB and 29.1% with a MRA. During a median follow-up of 53 (interquartile range 33-73) months, 235 (45%) patients died. Patients with LDL-c ≤100 mg/dL presented increased multivariate-adjusted risk of all-cause mortality: HR = 1.58 (95% CI: 1.08-2.30), p = 0.02. When patients were stratified according to DM, LDL-c ≤100 mg/dL was independently associated with increased death risk - HR = 1.55 (95% CI:1.05-2.30), p = 0.03 in patients without DM; in patients with DM no association was detected - multivariate-adjusted HR = 1.18 (95% CI: 0.77-1.80), p = 0.44. Conclusion: Non-DM HF patients with LDL-c>100 mg/dL have a 35% reduction in the mortality risk when compared with those with lower values. The "cholesterol paradox" in HF also applies to LDL-c in non-DM patients.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Facial palsy (FP) is one of the most common neuropathies. Overall, 15%-30% of patients develop chronic sequelae. Several studies support the use of botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) in the treatment of FP sequelae. No studies have analyzed the cost of treating FP with BoNT-A. METHODS: A retrospective review of data from all clinical records of consultations and procedures that took place at the FP Treatment Unit clinic throughout 2017. Type of BoNT-A used, total dose used, unilateral or bilateral injection, date of consultation, and gender were collected. The price of expendable materials, BoNT-A, and the 2017 salary scale was obtained to establish costs. RESULTS: During 2017, 605 clinical procedures were conducted in 240 patients. The mean number of procedures was 2.5 (0.80). The average time between procedures was 124(28.72) days. The total annual cost was 34.155,10€. The average annual cost of BoNT-A for each procedure was 39,93€, and the total annual cost of BoNT-A was 24.160,58€. On average, more units of IncotoxA were injected. This difference is not reflected in the final cost of each BoNT-A. For patients who achieved treatment stability, the average annual cost per patient was 106,6€ (OnatoxA) and 100,6€ (IncotoxA). CONCLUSION: In our unit, treatment with BoNT-A in FP sequelae had an average annual cost of 124,31€ per patient, requiring a visit to the hospital to receive treatment every 124 days. Given the functional and quality of life improvements, we should consider that it is a beneficial treatment at an acceptable cost.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate the anatomical structures of the skulls of peccaries to establish the basis for their clinical study and future preclinical research. Ten skulls of adult peccaries were subjected to tomographic examination. The data obtained were processed via three-dimensional image reconstruction software (3D images). The reconstructions obtained from the neurocranium of the studied specimens allowed the identification and description of the following structures: nasal bone, frontal bone, parietal bones, incisor bone, maxillary bone, zygomatic bone, temporal bone, palatal bone, occipital bone, vomer bone, pterygoid bone, sphenoid bone, paranasal sinuses and orbit. Computed tomography proved to be an important diagnostic tool in the investigation of the skull of this species, allowing the acquisition of anatomical values not yet documented for the species in the literature.(AU)

This study used B-mode and Doppler ultrasonography to characterize the abdominal structures of healthy peccaries raised in captivity. Fifteen peccaries were used for this study. The urinary vesicle appeared as an ovoid structure, located in the abdominal and pelvic transition, with a hyperechogenic, thin, smooth, and regular wall. The kidneys presented retroperitoneal topography and had similar sizes. The kidney/aorta ratio had an average value of 10.53±15cm (right) and 10.23±0.12 (left). The right adrenal gland had a length of 1.93±0.34cm and diameter of 0.56±0.16cm. The left adrenal gland had a length of 1.85±0.42cm and diameter of 0.52±0.11cm. The spleen had a diameter of 1.13±0.18cm. The hepatic vein demonstrated polyphasic flow in pulsed Doppler, with two retrograde peaks and an anterograde peak with a flow velocity of 25.7±0.83cm/s. The abdominal aorta had a diameter of 0.58±0.05cm and a flow velocity of 115.17±5.32cm/s. The morphological and hemodynamic study of the abdominal structures of the peccary, observed through B-mode and Doppler ultrasonography, aided in identifying the size, shape, position, echogenicity, and echotexture of the abdominal organs and in making inferences about the normal parameters for these structures in this species.(AU)

The treatment with anticancer drugs remains a challenge, as available drugs still entail the risk of deleterious off-target effects. The present study describes folic acid conjugated nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) as an effective doxorubicin delivery approach targeted to breast cancer cells. Two distinct NLCs formulations were designed and optimized leading to an encapsulation efficiency over than 65%. Cytotoxic and targeting potential of NLCs were studied in vitro, using MDA-MB-231 cell line. Results showed an enhanced cellular uptake of conjugated NLCs. In vitro release studies, mimicking the path in the body after oral administration, show that all formulations would reach the tumor microenvironment bearing 50% of the encapsulated doxorubicin. Moreover, NLCs demonstrated storage stability at 25 °C for at least 42 days. Overall, results revealed that the developed NLCs enable the possibility of oral administration and are a promising approach for the targeted delivery of doxorubicin to breast cancer cells.

RESUMEN

In order to understand the potential impacts of nickel nanowires (Ni NWs) after reaching the aquatic environment, this research evaluated the toxicity of Ni NWs with different lengths (≤ 1.1, ≤11 and ≤ 80 µm) for several floating, planktonic and nektonic freshwater organisms. In this work, Ni NWs were synthesized by electrodeposition using anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes. The toxicity of the NWs was assessed using a battery of aquatic species representative of key functions at the ecosystem level: the bacterium Aliivibrio fischeri, the algae Raphidocelis subcapitata, the macrophyte Lemna minor, the crustacean Daphnia magna and the zebrafish Danio rerio. Results indicated that for the concentrations tested (up to 2.5 mg L-1) the synthesized Ni NWs showed low toxicity. And although no lethal toxicity was observed for D. magna, at a sublethal level the feeding activity of the freshwater cladoceran was severely affected after exposure to Ni NWs. These findings showed that NWs can be accumulated in the gut of D. magna, even during a short exposure (24 h) directly impairing Daphnia nutrition and eventually populations growth. Consequently, this can also contribute to trophic transfer of NWs along the food chain. According to our results the toxicity of Ni NW may be mainly attributed to physical effects rather than chemical effects of Ni ions, considering that the concentrations of Ni NWs tested in this study were well below the toxicity thresholds reported in the literature for Ni ions and for Ni NMs.

Different artisanal cheeses are produced, commercialized and consumed in Brazil, leading to a constant development of related rules by the MAPA and other official agencies. The establishment of two national programs (SUASA and SISBI-POA) allowed an equivalence in inspection system and an expanded distribution. Also, MAPA allowed ripening time lower than 60 days for artisanal raw milk cheeses, based on scientific studies that assure their safety. However, lowering the ripening period is still controversial, once there are no proper established criteria for such scientific studies, leading to potential multiple interpretation of data. The newly established ARTE certification transferred the inspection responsibilities of artisanal products to secretaries of agriculture, livestock and health, in support of what was already predicated by MAPA and SISBI-POA. Based on ARTE certification, the inspection service must also provide orientation guidance to producers, which should be done specifically by extension organs and associations. The norms that guide the production and commercialization of these artisanal products often need to be updated, but based on well-established methodologies and procedures, to ensure the distribution of suitable products to consumers.(AU)

RESUMEN

Abstract The production of litterfall is essential for nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. From November 2009 to October 2011, analyzed the monthly litterfall production in two areas of Caatinga, a type of Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest located in the Cariri Paraibano, in the semiarid region of the Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil. One of the areas, Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) Fazenda Almas, is legally protected, and the other, Fazenda Moreiras, does not. The aims were to evaluate the effects of precipitation, evapotranspiration and vegetation structure on the temporal and spatial dynamics of litterfall production. Eight sampling points were randomly chosen at each site, and two 1 m2 collectors were installed 50 m apart from each other. The collected material was sorted, dried and weighed. Additionally, the characteristics (density, species richness, height and mean basal area) of the tree-shrub stratum in plots with a 10 m radius surrounding each collector. Total litterfall production was 4,500 kg ha-1 yr-1 for Fazenda Almas and 3,300 kg ha-1 yr-1 for Fazenda Moreiras; these values were within the expected range for Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests. The inter- and intra-annual variation in litterfall production was positively correlated with precipitation and evapotranspiration rates, and four months after the highest precipitation rates, there was a marked decrease in litterfall occurred during the dry season. Furthermore, the contributions of the material fractions were distinct with the leaf fraction representing for more than 60% of the litterfall, and the vegetation structure explained 75% of the variation in litterfall production. Therefore, climatic factors and vegetation structure affect the temporal and spatial dynamics of litterfall production and consequently influence nutrient dynamics in the semiarid region of Brazil.

BACKGROUND: We have shown previously in multivariable analysis that black men had 19% lower risk of death than white men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) treated with a docetaxel and prednisone (DP)-based regimen. The primary goal of this analysis was to compare progression-free survival (PFS), biochemical PFS, ≥50% decline in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) from baseline and objective response rate (ORR) in white, black and Asian men with mCRPC treated with a DP-based regimen. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Individual patient data from 8820 mCRPC men randomized on nine phase III trials to a DP-containing regimen were combined. Race used in the analysis was based on self-report. End points were PFS, biochemical PSA, ≥50% decline in PSA from baseline and ORR. The proportional hazards and the logistic regression models were employed to assess the prognostic importance of race in predicting outcomes adjusting for established prognostic factors. RESULTS: Of 8820 patients, 7528 (85%) were white, 500 (6%) were black, 424 were Asian (5%) and 368 (4%) had race unspecified. Median PFS were 8.3 [95% confidence interval (CI) 8.2-8.5], 8.2 (95% CI 7.4-8.8) and 8.3 (95% CI 7.6-8.8) months in white, black and Asian men, respectively. RESUMEN

Multifunctional nanosystems combining magnetic and plasmonic properties are a promising approach for cancer therapy, allowing magnetic guidance and a local temperature increase. This capability can provide a triggered drug release and synergistic cytotoxic effect in cancer cells. In this work, nickel ferrite/gold nanoparticles were developed, including nickel ferrite magnetic nanoparticles decorated with plasmonic gold nanoparticles and core/shell nanostructures (with a nickel ferrite core and a gold shell). These nanoparticles were covered with a surfactant/lipid bilayer, originating liposome-like structures with diameters below 160 nm. The heating capacity of these systems, upon excitation with light above 600 nm wavelength, was assessed through the emission quenching of rhodamine B located in the lipid layer. The developed nanosystems show promising results for future applications in thermotherapy.

RESUMEN

Abstract Introduction Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent disease affecting women more than men worldwide. Various factors are involved in the genesis of depression, including hormones such as testosterone and certain metabolic factors Objective To evaluate hormone levels and metabolic variables in women with major depression and healthy controls. Method A cross-sectional, comparative analytical study was conducted in 40 participants, 23 patients with an MDD diagnosis and 17 controls, all of women in reproductive age between the ages of 18 and 45. Sociodemographic variables, hormonal profile, and metabolic variables were assessed and the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale was used to evaluate depressive symptoms. Results No statistically significant differences were observed between the groups in the hormonal and metabolic variables explored. Nevertheless, it was observed that the lower the testosterone levels and the higher the serum glucose levels, the more intense depressive symptoms were. Discussion and conclusion Testosterone is associated with a lower depressive symptoms score on the Hamilton Depression scale, suggesting a potential antidepressant effect, whereas high glucose levels are associated with a higher score on this scale. We believe that the measurement of hormonal and metabolic variables in women can contribute to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of depression.

Eosinophils are abundant in the reproductive tract, contributing to the remodeling and successful implantation of the embryo. However, the mechanisms by which eosinophils migrate into the uterus and their relationship to edema are still not entirely clear, since there are a variety of chemotactic factors that can cause migration of these cells. Therefore, to evaluate the role of CCR3 in eosinophil migration, ovariectomized C57BL/6 mice were treated with CCR3 antagonist SB 328437 and 17β-estradiol. The hypothesis that the CCR3 receptor plays an important role in eosinophil migration to the mouse uterus was confirmed, because we observed reduction in eosinophil peroxidase activity in these antagonist-treated uteruses. The antagonist also influenced uterine hypertrophy, inhibiting edema formation. Finally, histological analysis of the orcein-stained uteruses showed that the antagonist reduced eosinophil migration together with edema. These data showed that the CCR3 receptor is an important target for studies that seek to clarify the functions of these cells in uterine physiology.

Introduction: Reducing poverty and achieving universal health coverage for people of all ages are part of the Sustainable Development Goal. Objective: determine the Out-of-pocket Health Expenditure (GBS) for people 60 and older (≥ 60 years) who are sick and its economic impact on households according to their poverty status in Paraguay. Material and Method: the 2014 Permanent Household Survey was analyzed, considering the official definition of poverty and the reference of illness or accident in a quarter. The average of GBS per household, the impact on quarterly monetary risk (IM) and on state subsidies for food pensions for the elderly (IPa). Results: Of 1,621,525 homes in the country 435,448 had at least 1 person 60 years, of which 188,715 had at least 1 of them ill or injured and 144,554 reported GBS. Among the non-poor households: 11.6% (IC 10.5 to 12.9) had at least 1 ill person ≥ 60 years, of which 75.8% (IC 71.2 to 79.8) had GBS, being on average 547,931 Gs. (DE 58,251). The medications were 53.3% (IC 45.2 to 61.5) from total. There was an IM of 5,7% (IC 4.6 to 6.9). Among the poor households: 11.6% (IC 9.6 to 14.0) had at least 1 ill person ≥ 60 years, of which 79.5% (IC 70.7 to 86,2) had GBS, being on average 341,542 Gs. (DE 40,101). The medications were 71.3 % (IC 61.9 to 80.7) from total. There was an IM of 11.5% (IC 7.0 to 16.0). There was an IPa of 16.9% (IC 4.4 to 29.4). The GBS was the equivalent to 19 days of feeding on average (DE 3.71). Conclusion: Paraguay requires more financial protection for older adults through synergies of poverty reduction and health policies.

RESUMEN

The adverse effects of air pollution have been long studied in the lung and respiratory systems, but the molecular changes that this causes at the central nervous system level have yet to be fully investigated and understood. To explore the evolution with time of protein expression levels in the brain of rats exposed to particulate matter of different sizes, we carried out two-dimensional gel electrophoresis followed by determination of dysregulated proteins through Coomassie blue staining-based densities (SameSpots software) and subsequent protein identification using MALDI-based mass spectrometry. Expression differences in dysregulated proteins were found to be statistically significant with p-value <0.05. A systems biology-based approach was utilized to determine critical biochemical pathways involved in the rats' brain response. Our results suggest that rats' brains have a particulate matter size dependent-response, being the mitochondrial activity and the astrocyte function severely affected. Our proteomic study confirms the dysregulation of different biochemical pathways involving energy metabolism, mitochondrial activity, and oxidative pathways as some of the main effects of PM exposure on the rat brain. SIGNIFICANCE: Rat brains exposed to particulate matter with origin in car engines are affected in two main areas: mitochondrial activity, by the dysregulation of many pathways linked to the respiratory chain, and neuronal and astrocytic function, which stimulates brain changes triggering tumorigenesis and neurodegeneration.
