Objective: This study aims to explore the subgroups and networks of symptom clusters in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, and to provide effective interventions for the core symptoms. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted at four comprehensive hospitals in Foshan City, China, from August to November 2023. A total of 292 participants completed the social determinants of health questionnaire, the numerical rating scale (NRS), the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), the Chinese version of the cancer fatigue scale (CFS), and the hospital anxiety and depression Scale (HADS). Latent class analysis (LCA) was utilized to distinguish subgroups, and network analysis was utilized to identify core symptoms among different subgroups. Results: Breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy exhibit symptoms were divided into two subgroups: the high burden group of symptoms (72.3%, Class 1) and the low burden group of symptoms (27.7%, Class 2). Education attainment, work status, family monthly income per capita, and daily sleep duration (hours) were associated with subgroup membership. "Panic feelings" (# HADS-A11) were the core symptom in both the full sample and Class 2, while "tension or pain" (# HADS-A1) was the core symptom in Class 1. Conclusions: The core symptoms of fear, enjoyment, nervousness, and pain varied across subgroups of patients and could inform the current strategies for symptom management in breast cancer chemotherapy patients.

Echinococcus granulosus (Eg) and Echinococcus multilocularis (Em) are the two most widely prevalent types of echinococcosis. Several diagnostic methods have been developed for detecting Eg and Em. However, some limitations, such as being time-consuming, needing expensive instruments, or exhibiting low sensitivity, make these methods unsuitable for on-site detection. In this study, a dual-RPA assay was established to detect and differentiate Eg and Em. The primer concentration ratio, reaction time, and reaction temperature of the dual-RPA were optimized. The result showed that the primer concentration ratio of Eg:Em was 400 nM:400 nM, and the best amplification efficiency was obtained by reacting at 38 °C for 20 min. The sensitivity, specificity, and repeatability of the assay were also tested. The assay's detection limit for both Eg and Em was 10 copies/µL. The assay showed reasonable specificity by testing ten parasitic nucleic acids. The assay's intra- and inter-batch coefficients of variation were below 10%, which indicates robust reproducibility of the assay. Finally, to validate the performance of the dual-RPA assay, it was compared with real-time PCR by using 86 clinical nucleic acid samples. The coincidence rate of Eg between dual-RPA and TaqMan real-time PCR was 96.51%, and the coincidence rate of Em between dual-RPA and TaqMan real-time PCR was 98.84%, indicating its potential for accurate clinical diagnosis. Therefore, this study established a rapid and sensitive dual-RPA assay that can rapidly detect and differentiate Eg and Em in one reaction tube and provided a new assay for the detection of echinococcosis in the field.

Background: The Life's Simple 7 (LS7) metric is a comprehensive measure of cardiovascular health (CVH) that encompasses seven distinct risk factors and behaviors associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Some studies have shown an association between infertility and CVD. The present study aimed to explore the potential association between the LS7 factors and infertility. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 3537 women aged 18-44 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning the years 2013-2018. The LS7 metrics encompassed various factors including physical activity, smoking habits, body mass index, blood pressure levels, dietary patterns, blood glucose levels, and total cholesterol levels. We computed a 14-point LS7 score based on participants' baseline data, classifying them as "inadequate" (3-6), "average" (7-10), or "ideal" (11-14). Infertility is defined as an affirmative answer to either of two questions on the NHANES questionnaire: "Have you tried to conceive for at least one year without success?" and "Have you sought medical help for your inability to conceive?" Logistic regression was utilized to estimate odds ratios (O.R.s) and 95% confidence intervals (C.I.s). Results: In total, 17.66% of participants were classified as individuals who reported experiencing infertility. In the continuous analysis, each one-unit increase in LS7 score was associated with a significantly decreased odds of infertility (OR=0.88 [0.77-0.89]). Analyzing the categorical representation of LS7 score, compared to individuals with poor scores, those with ideal scores exhibited a substantial 58% reduction in the odds of infertility (OR=0.42 [0.26-0.69]). Additionally, the observed interaction suggested that the influence of age on the relationship between LS7 and infertility is not consistent across different age groups (P for interaction < 0.001). Among individuals aged 35 or younger, each unit increase in LS7 score was associated with a substantial 18% (OR=0.82 [0.76-0.89]) decrease in the odds of infertility. However, in the older age group (>35), the association was attenuated and non-significant. Conclusions: Our research suggests a significant inverse association between LS7 scores and infertility. Age demonstrated a varying impact on this relationship, with a more pronounced impact observed among individuals aged 35 or younger.

Here we report the first observation of the concurrent breakdown of the strange metal (SM) normal state and superconductivity at a pressure-induced quantum critical point in Ca10(Pt4As8)((Fe0.97Pt0.03)2As2)5 superconductor. We find that, upon suppressing the superconducting state, the power exponent (α) changes from 1 to 2, and the slope of the temperature-linear resistivity per FeAs layer (A□) gradually diminishes. At a critical pressure, A□ and superconducting transition temperature (Tc) go to zero concurrently, where a quantum phase transition from a superconducting state with a SM normal state to a non-superconducting Fermi liquid state occurs. Scaling analysis reveals that the change of A□ with Tc obeys the relation of Tc ~ (A□)0.5, similar to what is seen in other chemically doped unconventional superconductors. These results suggest that there is a simple but powerful organizational principle of connecting the SM normal state with the high-Tc superconductivity.

Background: Breast cancer patients report high levels of psychosocial maladjustment after hospital discharge. Peer support may play an important role in improving anxiety and quality of life in breast cancer patients. This study aimed to assess the effect of peer support on quality of life and anxiety in breast cancer patients. Method: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies were conducted, using data sourced from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, SinoMed, China Science and Technology Periodical Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Data for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from inception to October 15, 2021. The RCTs reporting the effect of peer support intervention on quality of life and anxiety in breast cancer patients were included. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool, that is, the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). Standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for the pooled effect size. Results: A total of 14 studies were included in the systematic review and 11 in the meta-analysis. The pooled results revealed that peer support significantly improved quality of life (SMD = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.28-1.11) and anxiety (SMD = -0.45, 95% CI = -0.88 to -0.02) in breast cancer patients. The quality of evidence was low as all studies showed the risk of bias and inconsistency. Conclusion: Peer support intervention has the potential to effectively improve psychosocial adaptations in breast cancer patients. Future studies with a robust design and larger sample size are needed to investigate the potential factors associated with the beneficial effects of peer support.

BACKGROUND: Patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), male sex, obesity, older age or hypertension are prone to hypoxemia during flexible bronchoscopy. This study investigated whether using a high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) could reduce the incidence of oxygen desaturation during bronchoscopy under deep sedation in patients at risk of hypoxemia. METHODS: A total of 176 patients at risk of hypoxemia who underwent flexible bronchoscopy under deep sedation were randomly assigned to two groups: the HFNC group (humidified oxygen was supplied via a high-flow nasal cannula at a rate of 60 L/min and a concentration of 100%, n = 87) and the facemask group (oxygen was supplied via a tight-fitting facemask at a rate of 6 L/min and a concentration of 100%, n = 89). RESULTS: Oxygen desaturation occurred in 4 (4.6%) patients in the HFNC group and 26 (29.2%) patients in the facemask group (P < 0.001). The facemask group required more jaw thrust manoeuvres than the HFNC group (43[48.3%] vs. 5[5.7%], P < 0.001). 8 patients (9.0%) in the facemask group and none in the HFNC group required bag-mask ventilation (P = 0.012). CONCLUSION: The use of an HFNC can reduce the incidence of oxygen desaturation and the requirement for airway intervention in patients at risk of hypoxemia during flexible bronchoscopy under deep sedation. OBJECTIVE: Mental distress has a high global prevalence and is associated with poor health outcomes. This study aimed to estimate the relationship between mental distress and the risk of 10 chronic diseases using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 BRFSS were analyzed. The association between mental distress based on the number of days of poor mental health and the risk of 10 chronic diseases, namely obesity, diabetes, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), arthritis, kidney disease, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, skin cancer, and other cancers, were assessed by logistic regression models to calculate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Subgroup analyses stratified by age and sex were also conducted. RESULTS: Positive associations between mental distress and chronic diseases were observed. We also found a dose-response gradient between mental distress levels and the risk of all chronic diseases except skin cancer. In respondents aged 18-44 years reporting ≥23 days/month of mental distress, there has the largest odds ratio between mental distress levels and each chronic disease. Moreover, mental distress was associated with higher risks of obesity and arthritis in women relative to men. CONCLUSIONS: Mental distress was positively associated with chronic diseases. Age and sex are crucial in this relationship. Further studies with longitudinal data are needed to clarify the direction of this association.

Phosphatase and tensin homology deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) is a tumor suppressor gene. Its encoded protein has phosphatase and lipid phosphatase activities, which regulate the growth, differentiation, migration, and apoptosis of cells. The catalytic activity of PTEN is crucial for controlling cell growth under physiological and pathological conditions. It not only affects the survival and proliferation of tumor cells, but also inhibits a variety of cell regeneration processes. The use of PTEN inhibitors is being explored as a potentially beneficial therapeutic intervention for the repair of injuries to the central nervous system. PTEN influences the proliferation and differentiation of NSCs by regulating the expression and phosphorylation of downstream molecular protein kinase B (Akt) and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). However, the role of PTEN inhibitors in the Akt/mTOR signaling pathway in NSC proliferation and differentiation is unclear. Dipotassium bisperoxo (picolinoto) oxovanadate (V) [bpv(pic)] is a biologically active vanadium compound that blocks PTEN dephosphorylation and suppresses its activity, and has been used as a PTEN lipid phosphatase inhibitor. Here, bpv(pic) intervention was found to significantly increase the number of rat NSCs, as determined by bromodeoxyuridine staining and the cell counting kit-8, and to increase the percentage of neurons undergoing differentiation, as shown by immunofluorescence staining. Bpv(pic) intervention also significantly increased PTEN and mTOR expression, as shown by real-time PCR analysis and western blotting. In conclusion, PTEN inhibitor bpv(pic) promotes the proliferation and differentiation of NSCs into neurons.

BACKGROUND: Many middle-aged and older adults have more than one chronic health condition. It is therefore important to explore the effectiveness of interventions for multiple chronic conditions. Tai Chi is widely used in China and other countries, and many studies have examined the effect of Tai Chi on anxiety and depression. However, there are no systematic reviews of the effect of Tai Chi on anxiety and depression in various chronic conditions. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of Tai Chi on anxiety and depression symptoms in four chronic conditions: cancer, stroke, heart failure (HF), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: We searched Chinese and English databases (Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), Wanfang Database, and Sinomed) from inception to October 2020. Review Manager version 5.2 and Stata version 12.0 were used to perform a systematic review. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. The study was registered with the PROSPERO database (number CRD42020209594). RESULTS: Of the 596 studies identified, we included 25 randomized controlled trials involving 1819 participants. Combined analysis of the four diseases showed statistically significant differences between the Tai Chi and control groups for anxiety symptoms (SMD -0.99, 95%CI: -1.5, -0.47; P < 0.01) and depressive symptoms (SMD 0.70, 95%CI: -1.01, -0.39; P < 0.01). Subgroup analyses showed statistically significant differences between the Tai Chi and control groups for depressive symptoms in stroke (SMD -0.43, 95%CI: -0.67, -0.18; P < 0.01) and HF (SMD -0.57, 95%CI: -0.8, -0.33; P < 0.01). However, no statistically significant differences were found for depressive symptoms in COPD or cancer. There were statistically significant differences between the Tai Chi and control groups for anxiety symptoms in stroke (SMD -0.60, 95%CI: -0.88, -0.32; P < 0.01) and cancer (SMD -0.69, 95%CI: -1.22, -0.17; P < 0.01), but not in COPD or HF. Subgroup, sensitivity, meta regression, and publication bias analyses showed high heterogeneity correlated with a single study and study quality. Sensitivity analysis showed that most meta-analysis results had good stability, but those for anxiety symptoms in COPD were unstable; therefore, careful interpretation is required. CONCLUSION: Tai Chi has a positive effect on anxiety and depression, especially for patients with cancer, stroke, and HF. However, given the weak evidence, this approach is not a substitute for psychiatric treatment.

PURPOSE: Surgical stress promotes tumor metastasis. Interleukin (IL)-17 plays a pivotal role in cancer progression, and high IL-17 expression predicts poor prognosis of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Lidocaine may exert tumor-inhibiting effects. We hypothesize that intravenous lidocaine attenuates surgical stress and reduces serum IL-17 levels during video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for NSCLC. METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included 60 early-stage NSCLC patients undergoing VATS, into a lidocaine group (n = 30; intravenous lidocaine bolus 1.0 mg/kg, and 1.0 mg/kg/h until the end of surgery) or a normal saline control group (n = 30). The primary outcome was serum IL-17 level at 24 hours postoperatively. The secondary outcomes included serum IL-17 level at the time of post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) discharge, serum cortisol level at PACU discharge and postoperative 24 hours, pain scores (0-10) from PACU discharge to 48 hours postoperatively, incidences of postoperative nausea and vomiting, dizziness, and arrhythmia during 0-48 hours postoperatively, and 30-day mortality. Long-term outcomes included chemotherapy, cancer recurrence, and mortality. RESULTS: The lidocaine group had lower serum IL-17 at 24 hours postoperatively compared with the control group (23.0 ± 5.8 pg/mL vs 27.3 ± 8.2 pg/mL, difference [95% CI] = -4.3 [-8.4 to -0.2] pg/mL; P = 0.038). The lidocaine group also had reduced serum IL-17 (difference [95% CI] = -4.6 [-8.7 to -0.5] pg/mL), serum cortisol (difference [95% CI] = -37 [-73 to -2] ng/mL), and pain scores (difference [95% CI] = -0.7 [-1.3 to -0.1] points) at PACU discharge. During a median follow-up of 10 (IQR, 9-13) months, 2 patients in the lidocaine group and 6 patients in the control group received chemotherapy, one patient in the control group had cancer recurrence, and no death event occurred. CONCLUSION: Intravenous lidocaine was associated with reduced serum IL-17 and cortisol following VATS procedures in early-stage NSCLC patients. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ChiCTR2000030629.

Numerous experiments have proved that microRNAs (miRNAs) could be used as diagnostic biomarkers for many complex diseases. Thus, it is conceivable that predicting the unobserved associations between miRNAs and diseases is extremely significant for the medical field. Here, based on heterogeneous networks built on the information of known miRNA-disease associations, miRNA function similarity, disease semantic similarity, and Gaussian interaction profile kernel similarity for miRNAs and diseases, we developed a computing model of biased random walk with restart on multilayer heterogeneous networks for miRNA-disease association prediction (BRWRMHMDA) through enforcing degree-based biased random walk with restart (BRWR). Assessment results reflected that an AUC of 0.8310 was gained in local leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV), which proved the calculation algorithm's good performance. Besides, we carried out BRWRMHMDA to prioritize candidate miRNAs for esophageal neoplasms based on HMDD v2.0. We further prioritize candidate miRNAs for breast neoplasms based on HMDD v1.0. The local LOOCV results and performance analysis of the case study all showed that the proposed model has good and stable performance.

Metabolites are versatile bioactive molecules. They are not only the substrates and/or the products of enzymatic reactions but also act as the regulators in the systemic metabolism. Metabolomics is a high-throughput analytical strategy to qualify or quantify as many metabolites as possible in the metabolomes. It is an indispensable part of systems biology. The leading techniques in this field are mainly based on mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The metabolomic analysis has gained wide use in bioscience fields. In the tumor research arena, metabolomics can be employed to identify biomarkers for prediction, diagnosis, and prognosis. Chemotherapeutic effect evaluation and personalized medicine decision-making can also benefit from metabolomic analysis of patient biofluid or biopsy samples. Many cell-level studies can help in disease exploration. In this review, the basic features and principles of varied metabolomic analysis are introduced. The value of metabolomics in clinical and laboratory gastrointestinal cancer studies is discussed, especially for mass spectrometry applications. Besides, combined use of metabolomics and other tools to solve problems in cancer practice is briefly illustrated. In summary, metabolomics paves a new way to explore cancerous diseases in the light of small molecules.

Processing of dark tea varieties, such as Fu brick tea, Liupao tea, Qianliang tea, and Qing brick tea, includes solid-state fermentation involving microorganisms. In this study, we analyzed the major chemical constituents of dark tea extracts and evaluated their modulatory effect on the gastrointestinal function in normal mice, including the improvement of gastrointestinal transit and intestinal microbial, as well as the attenuation of intestinal microbial dysbiosis and intestinal pathological damage, and the adjustment of immune function in antibiotic-treated mice. Substantial differences in major chemical constituents, including total polyphenols, total organic acids, water extract content, 18 free amino acids, gallic acid, and six tea catechins, were observed among Fu brick tea, Qianliang tea, Qing brick tea, and Liupao tea extracts. Extracts from the four dark tea varieties significantly promoted gastrointestinal transit and colonization of beneficial Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, and inhibited the growth of harmful Escherichia coli and Enterococcus in normal mice. In addition, Qianliang tea, Qing brick tea, and Liupao tea extracts significantly accelerated the reversal of the ampicillin sodium-induced pathological damage in the ileum, intestinal bacterial dysbiosis (Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, E. coli, and Enterococcus), and low immunity.

A high-salt diet (HSD) is a major cause of many chronic and age-related defects such as myocardial hypertrophy, locomotor impairment and mortality. Exercise training can efficiently prevent and treat many chronic and age-related diseases. However, it remains unclear whether endurance exercise can resist HSD-induced impairment of climbing capacity and longevity in aging individuals. In our study, flies were given exercise training and fed a HSD from 1-week old to 5-weeks old. Overexpression or knockdown of salt and dFOXO were built by UAS/Gal4 system. The results showed that a HSD, salt gene overexpression and dFOXO knockdown significantly reduced climbing endurance, climbing index, survival, dFOXO expression and SOD activity level, and increased malondialdehyde level in aging flies. Inversely, in a HSD aging flies, endurance exercise and dFOXO overexpression significantly increased their climbing ability, lifespan and antioxidant capacity, but they did not significantly change the salt gene expression. Overall, current results indicated that a HSD accelerated the age-related decline of climbing capacity and mortality via upregulating salt expression and inhibiting the dFOXO/SOD pathway. BACKGROUND: Postoperative lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (post-LMR) change (LMRc) reflects the dynamic change of balance between inflammatory reaction and immune reaction after curative operation. An elevated preoperative LMR (pre-LMR) has been shown to be a prognostic factor in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), but the clinical value of the LMRc remains unknown. METHODS: 674 patients in ESCC undergoing curative operation were enrolled in this study. LMRc (LMRc = pre-LMR-post-LMR) was counted on the basis of data within one week before and after operation. The median of LMRc was chosen to be the optimal cut-off value to evaluate the prognostic value of LMRc. RESULTS: Kaplan-Meier curves revealed that LMRc ≤ 1.59 was significantly associated with worse overall survival (OS) (P = 0.003) and disease-free survival (DFS) (P = 0.008). Multivariate analysis suggested that LMRc could serve as an independent prognostic predictor for both OS (P = 0.006, HR = 0.687, 95% CI 0.526-0.898) and DFS (P = 0.003, HR = 0.640, 95% CI 0.476-0.859). CONCLUSIONS: LMRc is a promising prognostic predictor for predicting the worse clinical outcome in patients with ESCC undergoing curative operation.

PURPOSE: Data from in vitro and animal studies support the preventive effect of tea (Camellia sinensis) against colorectal cancer. Further, many epidemiologic studies evaluated the association between tea consumption and colorectal cancer risk, but the results were inconsistent. We conducted a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies to systematically assess the association between tea consumption and colorectal cancer risk. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify the related articles by searching PubMed and Embase up to June, 2019. Summary relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a fixed effect model. RESULTS: Twenty cohort articles were included in the present meta-analysis involving 2,068,137 participants and 21,437 cases. The combined RR of colorectal cancer for the highest vs. lowest tea consumption was determined to 0.97 (95% CI 0.94-1.01) with marginal heterogeneity (I2 = 24.0%, P = 0.093) among all studies. This indicated that tea consumption had no significant association with colorectal cancer risk. Stratified analysis showed that no significant differences were found in all subgroups. We further conducted the gender-specific meta-analysis for deriving a more precise estimation. No significant association was observed between tea consumption and colorectal cancer risk in male (combined RR = 0.97; 95% CI 0.90-1.04). However, tea consumption had a marginal significant inverse impact on colorectal cancer risk in female (combined RR = 0.93; 95% CI 0.86-1.00). Further, we found a stronger inverse association between tea consumption and risk of colorectal cancer among the female studies with no adjustment of coffee intake (RR: 0.90; 95% CI 0.82-1.00, P < 0.05) compared to the female studies that adjusted for coffee intake (RR = 0.97; 95% CI 0.87-1.09, P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our finding indicates that tea consumption has no significant impact on the colorectal cancer risk in both genders combined, but gender-specific meta-analysis shows that tea consumption has a marginal significant inverse impact on colorectal cancer risk in female.

PURPOSE: To compare the diagnostic performance of normalized apparent diffusion coefficients (nADCs) of different references with that of ADCs at differentb factors in differentiating borderline epithelial ovarian tumors (BEOTs) from malignant epithelial ovarian tumors (MEOTs). METHOD: This retrospective study included 53 BEOTs and 148 MEOTs. Conventional magnetic resonance and diffusion-weighted imaging withb factors of 800 and 1000s/mm2 were performed. ADC was measured three times at solid components of tumors, gluteus maximus muscle (GMM), iliopsoas muscle (IM) and urine and then averaged. ADCtumor, nADCs were then obtained. Differences and the diagnostic performance of ADCtumor and nADCs between BEOTs and MEOTs with different b factors were compared. RESULTS: ADCtumor, nADCs regardless of b factors were significantly higher in BEOTs than MEOTs. The diagnostic performance of nADCurine regardless of b factors was significantly larger than that of nADCGMM and nADCIM. There was no significant difference in the diagnostic performance between ADCtumor and nADCurine regardless of b factors. A significantly lower ADCtumor and a larger diagnostic performance for ADCtumor was found with a b factor of 1000s/mm2 than 800 s/mm2. There were no significant differences in nADCurine of BEOTs or MEOTs or in the diagnostic performance of nADCurine with b factors between 800 and 1000s/mm2. CONCLUSIONS: ADCtumor and nADCs were both capable of differentiating BEOTs from MEOTs. nADCurine was the best of all nADCs and was superior to ADCtumor because of its stable performance in differentiating BEOTs from MEOTs, regardless of b factors.

Diabetes mellitus has become a serious and growing public health concern. It has high morbidity and mortality because of its complications, such as diabetic nephropathy, diabetic cardiovascular complication, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic hepatopathy. Epidemiological studies revealed that the consumption of tea was inversely associated with the risk of diabetes mellitus and its complications. Experimental studies demonstrated that tea had protective effects against diabetes mellitus and its complications via several possible mechanisms, including enhancing insulin action, ameliorating insulin resistance, activating insulin signaling pathway, protecting islet ß-cells, scavenging free radicals, and decreasing inflammation. Moreover, clinical trials also confirmed that tea intervention is effective in patients with diabetes mellitus and its complications. Therefore, in order to highlight the importance of tea in the prevention and management of diabetes mellitus and its complications, this article summarizes and discusses the effects of tea against diabetes mellitus and its complications based on the findings from epidemiological, experimental, and clinical studies, with the special attention paid to the mechanisms of action.

Effects of anesthesia methods on immune function in patients with lung cancer undergoing radical operation were investigated. A total of 122 patients undergoing radical resection of lung cancer who were treated in Zhejiang Cancer Hospital from September 2013 to April 2016 were randomly divided into the combined anesthesia group and the intravenous anesthesia group, with 61 cases in each group. The patients in the combined anesthesia group were given intravenous combined epidural anesthesia. Patients in the intravenous anesthesia group were given intravenous anesthesia. The change of CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+CD25+ at time-point T0 (before anesthesia), T1 (the time of anesthesia), T2 (after operation), T3 (24 h after operation), T4 (72 h after operation) were compared between the two groups. The levels of CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+CD25+ at T1, T2, T3 and T4 in the combined anesthesia group were higher than that in the intravenous anesthesia group (P<0.05). Αfter starting anesthesia, the levels of CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+CD25+ began to decrease in both groups. The levels of CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+CD25+ at T2 and T1 were lower than those at T0 (P<0.05). The levels of CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+CD25+ at T2 were lower than T1 (P<0.05). After T3, the levels of CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+CD25+ began to increase in both groups. Τhe levels of CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+CD25+ at T3 and T4 were higher in both groups than those at T2 and T1 (P<0.05), and the levels of CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+CD25+ at T4 were higher in both groups than those at T3, but the levels of CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+CD25+ at T3 and T4 were lower than those at T0 (P<0.05). Intravenous combined epidural anesthesia can maintain a relatively stable immune function compared with simple intravenous anesthesia patients.

Although the infectious diseases tuberculosis (TB) and cryptococcosis both cause formation of single or multiple nodules in immunodeficient hosts, cases of co-infection of these diseases are rarely seen. We report a patient who was co-infected with TB and cryptococcosis. A male patient with no clinical evidence of immunodeficiency presented with a 3-week history of abdominal distension accompanied by oedema of recurring lower extremities. The patient was diagnosed with tuberculous peritonitis and tuberculous pleurisy by an abdominal puncture biopsy. Several months after being treated for TB, the patient was diagnosed with Cryptococcus infection and received antifungal treatment. Computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging findings suggested that treatment was effective. This case illustrates the challenges encountered during assessment of neoplasms associated with TB and cryptococcosis. Differential diagnosis requires an abdominal puncture biopsy. Diagnosis of Cryptococcus infection also requires a positive cryptococcal culture and positive India ink staining analysis. Notably, our patient also showed no obvious symptoms of cryptococcosis after receiving anti-TB treatment. Accordingly, in this report, we discuss the possible pathogenic mechanisms that underlie the coincidence of both types of inflammatory lesions. We emphasize the need for a greater awareness of atypical presentations of TB accompanied by Cryptococcus infection.
